Reflecting on the LP during an interview with NME last year , Pritchard explained: “‘Inside In/Inside Out’ has got a lot of energy. It’s a coming-of-age album with a lot of angst, which is probably why teenagers still discover it.

“Really, though, I don’t know. Maybe it’s an algorithmic thing. The world is mad like that, but it’s exciting for us.”

The Kooks’ sixth and most recent studio effort, ’10 Tracks To Echo In The Dark’, came out in July 2022.

Meanwhile, The Vaccines are gearing up to release their sixth album ‘Pick-Up Full Of Pink Carnations’ early next year. They’ve already previewed the project with the singles ‘Heartbreak Kid’ and ‘Sometimes, I Swear’ .

The Kooks (established in 2004) are a British pop-rock foursome from Brighton, UK who boast a very distinct alternative, indie-rock sound.

Arriving on the British indie rock scene in 2006 were vocalist and guitarist Luke Pritchard, lead guitarist and synth player Hugh Harris, drummer Alexis Nunez and bassist Peter Denton (the original bassist was Max Rafferty, who left in 2008 and original drummer Paul Garred was eventually replaced due to a nerve problem in his arm, making him unable to play live).

The four Brighton boys that make up The Kooks joined the likes of the fresh-faced Arctic Monkeys in releasing their debut album in the mid naughties; theirs recorded in Konk studios, London in 2005 and entitled “Inside In/Inside Out.” Although they were a little overshadowed by Arctic Monkey’s simultaneous release and instant success, the album received great critical acclaim and massive chart success in their UK home, eventually securing the number two position in the Albums Chart for two consecutive weeks. The album was also certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry and launched their mainstream success, winning them the Best UK and Ireland Act at the 2006 MTV Awards.

Singles from their debut album such as “She Moves in Her Own Way” and “Naïve” broke the top ten in the UK singles chart and achieved success in charts in Europe too. The latter single being covered in Radio One’s Live Lounge sessions by British songstress Lily Allen cemented the band’s wide reaching appeal and demonstrated their strength in song writing skills. With influences like The Rolling Stones, The Strokes and Bob Dylan, this particular skill certainly didn't happen by mistake.

Their second album, “Konk” (named after the studio in which the first and second album were recorded) was released in 2008 and went straight to number one in the UK Albums Chart and was certified gold in the UK and Ireland. Single “Always Where I Need to Be” even achieved chart success in the US, reaching number 22 in the Alternative Songs Billboard chart.

In 2009 The Kooks began working on their third studio album (also recorded on label Virgin Records, as with their preceding albums). However, work was slow and after moving between new producers and writing methods to finally work with producer Tony Hoffer again, front man Pritchard announced in January 2011 that they had finally recorded fourteen tracks. Two months later the release date of 12th September 2011 for “Junk of the Heart” was announced and the album released with a more modern sound than before.

The Kooks then released a new single in April 2014 from their album, “Listen” released the following September. With surprise slots at festivals like Glastonbury, this particular year felt a little like a come back for The Kooks with Pritchard stating himself “that kind of fearlessness when you make the first album kind of crept back in.”

Live reviews

The Kooks are fronted by Luke Pritchard and hail from East Sussex. I found it very surprising they were playing a venue as small as Toads Place. This is a group that's headlined festivals in Europe. For some reason, their sound hasn't translated to similar popularity in the US. Never the less though, they still know how to out on a great show.

The Kooks are on a summer tour in support of their 4th album, entitled Listen. I was late to discovering this album, but it is excellent. The group performed 9 tunes from Listen on the evening, which I was very pleased about. This included opener 'Around Town' to start the show. This got the crowd going from the beginning.

Pritchard really got the crowd into it by playing three of their biggest hits consecutively in the middle of the set. 'Always Where I Need to Be,' 'She Moves in Her Own Way,' and 'Junk of the Heart' all seemed to rattle the old building with some great audience participation.

I believe the best song in the Kooks catalogue is the lead single of Listen - 'Bad Habit.' The audience and backing band members belted out the driving background rhythm, while Pritchard danced and smoothly sang the verses. This is just one example of how dance friendly the album is. No one in the crowd could seem to stand still.

The final song of the night was 'Naive,' giving way to a long ovation for an encore, which I believe turned out to be the best part of the night. Luke first sat at the piano to play of slower tune in 'See Me Now.' This is a very raw number, written and sung by Pritchard to his father. After this emotional ballad, the Kooks turned it up one more time for 'Forgive and Forget' to finish. It was an appropriate closer to a great show!

One of the most surprising and probably best shows of the summer here. Just add the Kooks to the already lengthy list of great bands coming over from England. I'll definitely be on the lookout for them again.

The Kooks. Despite the name, they are anything but kooky. A tried and true band, the Kooks don't need me to tell you they are a good band, but screw that I'll tell you anyway. The Kooks are an awesome-to-the-max band. And with their new upcoming album "Listen", things looks surely to continue at a rampant and amazing pace. With magnificently entertaining songs like "See the World", "Shine On", "Rosie", and "Always Where I Need To Be", the Kooks are an ultimate delight to see live. Deeply satisfying each time a chord is played, and always intriguing when switching from electric to acoustic during songs, you can always feel the 'live' part of the live concert. So yeah, you should really think about seeing them live. Seriously, you should.

But of course, the best selling point of the band is it's frontman and lead singer, Luke Pritchard. A real entertaining character, Pritchard is a natural performer, knowing exactly how to please and sell a crowd. With spectacular dance moves and an intriguing stage persona, Pritchard alone was a delight to watch. And this in a way definitely made everything more awesome. These guys are really a band you will want to rock to, even if you listen to them or not. They have that classic rock feel and vibe, with a modern rock sound. Which turns out to be a stellar combination. The Kooks can be described in many ways, but that will never change the fact their music is among the best. Rock on, Kooks, you deserve it.

Alternating between high energy songs with catchy beats to acoustic sing-alongs is the combination that makes The Kooks so enjoyable no matter if it's a small venue or a huge festival. The Kooks will keep you hooping and swaying with every song change. You'll get excited when Luke grabs his acoustic guitar or when he ditches it all for the mic. No matter what, every time you hear his voice screech you'll want to jump up and touch him. Lead singer Luke Pritchard's voice is what ties all three albums together as The Kooks search for the right mixture of soul, hip-hop and rock. And with new singes like "Down", "Around Town" and "Bad Habit". You can hear the evolution from their first album, raw and Acousticy, to the more Beat and soul driven songs of the new upcoming album. These changes are why fans are excited about their upcoming album. I found The Kooks not from their hit song "Naive" like most people did in 2006 but from there great covers of "Gnarls Barkley - Crazy" and even through all the different changes the band has made throughout the years I think that Luke creative ability has made leaps and bounds since the first album and that is why I keep coming back for more.

I had never even heard of The Kooks before I saw them. I saw them sort of by accident. I was at Glastonbury 2007.

The only band I was excited about when the lineup was released was Arctic Monkeys. I did see them, they were great. But this band, the Kooks, they were something else. I was just walking near the Pyramid Stage and the sound of their set drew me in. It was both exuberant and laid back, which is exactly what I was looking for. I danced around and jammed out to all of their tunes and they were so adorable.

There is just something so sweet about a guy singing his heart out with a cardigan and an acoustic guitar. I didn't know any of their songs, so I didn't know which were the hits but my favorite bit was just as the sun was starting to set. They played this song called Oil. The people around me were big fans and were happy to tell me the name of the song after it was over. By the end of the set, they were my new festival friends. We linked arms and swayed along and they told me everything about the Kooks.

I have seen them 4 times since then and every time has been great but nothing has beaten the first time.

There was a great build up and opening for this gig as a huge curtain covered the stage and ‎the band appeared behind it, their silhouettes playing their instruments before the curtain ‎dropped and they opened up Eddie’s Gun. ‎

The Kooks didn’t let their following down and played all their old hits and the atmosphere ‎was electric all night, I felt they really grew into the show and got better as it went on.‎

The encore of “Around Town”, “Shine On” and of course “Naïve” was sensational as the ‎crowd’s anticipation was met. I sometimes think some of the bands such as The Kooks from ‎that era become victims of the success of their debut albums and their new music doesn’t get ‎the credit it deserves especially given the talent and exposure of new music and new bands ‎around.‎

Take a listen to new songs “Be Who You Are” and the brilliant “Broken Vow” (my personal ‎highlight of the gig) and with new tunes and live performances like this they could get back ‎into the indie elite. ‎

The Kooks concert was AMAZING! I've been a fan of them for about 4 years, but it was the first time I've seen them play live. The concert was a perfect mix of their old and new songs and the crowd was insane. Everybody was dancing and screaming the lyrics. It was great to be surrounded by such hardcore, enthusiastic fans, it really made the night rememberable. Their live performance was awesome. No massive fireworks or anything, just an excellent example of their amazing musical talent. Their music is best described as indie rock, and similarities have been made to Arctic Monkeys and The Killers. If interested, I would recommend their songs; Seaside, Taking Pictures Of You, She Moves In Her Own Way or Eskimo Kiss. The Kooks concert was an amazing night, probably the best concert I've ever been to, and I definatly recommend it to everyone and anyone!! The music is awesome, even better live, insane fans, and it doesn't hurt that the lead singer, Luke Pritchard, is pretty hot.

I'm a fan of The Kooks since 2008~2009, when I first heard them I felt so good, and it has been like this since then. I'm from Brazil and they have played there twice, but I it was not possible for me to go to either of the concerts.

Now I'm currently living in Norway and when Songkick notified me about the concert I felt so so happy, for the first time I would be able to see one of my favourite bands (if not THE favourite one)!

And they didn't let me down, it was amazing, it was wonder! Seeing them so close, singing all the songs that have been making part of my life for around 6 years! It couldn't be better! Awesome concert, from an awesome band and amazing guys! I'm proud being your fan ;)

It was way better than I expected!

I was a big fan of The Kooks for their first three albums. To be honest I do not enjoy their latest album so much. So I went there without a big expectation. Turns out they were incredible.

They are such a great performance everybody was having a really great time. The old songs really bring back memories of me playing their songs with my guitar in my room, brought me goosebumps!

I'm sure someday I'll look back to the day I watched The Kooks and smile.

PS. If you're wondering to watch their show or not, just watch it! Well worth it.

I've been wanting to see The Kooks live since 2008. So, I did not even think it was possible for the show to be as amazing as I had built it up in my mind to be. But,it was. It was easily one of the best concerts I've ever been to and I have been to a lot of concerts.

Go see the Kooks play live! if possible try to see them at a smaller venue. They play their new songs and they play songs from all of their old CDs. They ask for a requests and then they play whatever the crowd is wanting them to play. It was an incredible concert.

The Kooks absolutely blew me away last night. They have been my favorite band for years now and seeing them in person was a very moving and memorable experience for me.

With an excellent set list, The Kooks had the audience all mesmerized by their performance and singing along to every beautiful lyric. The songs chosen for the encore were perfectly selected, drawing the crowd into the performance even more before leaving. Overall, the show was 100% mindblowing and thoroughly enjoyed. Easily one of the happiest nights I can recall.

The Kooks Announce US Tour with The Vaccines

Celebrating 15 years of The Kooks' Inside In / Inside Out as well as The Vaccines' new album

The Kooks Announce US Tour with The Vaccines

The Kooks have announced that they’ll be coming to the United States for “the first time in a long time” for a 16-stop 2024 tour with The Vaccines .

Kicking off on February 29th with a performance in Atlanta, the tour will will take the two beloved British alt bands to cities like Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and more, with The Kooks indicating that they’ll play their seminal debut album, Inside In / Inside Out , in its entirety at each stop in celebration of its 15th anniversary. Watch a video of the band’s Luke Pritchard announcing the tour below.

Tickets for the shows go on sale to the general public via Ticketmaster on Friday, October 13th, at 10:00 a.m. local time, following a Live Nation pre-sale which opens on Thursday, October 12th, at 10:00 a.m. local time (use access code VOCALS ). Once tickets are on sale, you can also find them at StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program.

Joining The Kooks for the duration of the tour will be The Vaccines, who are currently gearing up to release their sixth studio album, Pick-Up Full of Pink Carnations on January 12th via Thirty Tigers. On Wednesday, October 11th, they shared the album’s latest single, “Sometimes, I Swear,” a cathartic tune that grapples with the deep questions of life, over a soundscape of guitars, of course.

Speaking about the new single, The Vaccines’ lead singer Justin Young said: “Like many songs before it, ‘Sometimes, I Swear’ began life as Tim [Lanham, keyboardist] and I sat on my sofa in London. I don’t think there are many places on the planet where I feel so at peace as sitting in my own home, but even there I constantly question my place in the world. I think the innate human need to be part of something — to connect with each other in a community or a congregation — is what keeps driving us forward and searching for meaning. It’s something many of us struggle with on a daily basis, but I hope when people hear this song they’ll feel less alone in that struggle.” Pre-orders for Pick-Up Full of Pink Carnations are ongoing.

When you look back at the sea of mid-noughties indie bands, there are few still standing and even fewer, some fifteen years later, who are still experiencing career highs. But this was the precise spot The Kooks found themselves in, four years ago.

After a worldwide arena tour, the release of their 2018 UK Top Ten album ‘Let’s Go Sunshine’ saw the Brighton band topping the bill at festivals across Europe and at home. The streaming boom had opened up The Kooks up to a new audience of young fans who loved their distinctive brand of indie rock and were itching to see them play live.

Coming off the back of a punishing tour schedule, frontman, Luke Pritchard — vowed to take a bit of a breather. But instead, found himself right back in the studio.

“I started going to Berlin for three or four days at a time. I was really affected by Brexit and I wanted to make a bit of a statement by creating a European record,” he explains. “We’re a European band, we practically lived out there and have so much love for Europe, so we wanted to keep that connection.”

Berlin has long been something of a creative Mecca for artists from all over the world and Pritchard found himself moving in those circles, meeting the collaborators he would work with on their behemoth of a sixth album, ’10 Tracks To Echo In The Dark.’ The period was one of work, inspiration and creativity as opposed to partying. “I wasn’t doing any drugs,” Pritchard attests. “It was more dive bars and a bottle of whiskey than Berghain.”

The environment quickly started to work its magic. “A lot of songwriters have found refuge in Berlin,” he says. “It’s a free place, it’s not so consumed by commerciality. I was looking for something a bit rawer, a little bit more minimal. Sometimes you just pick up these nuances somewhere. It’s not necessarily the people, it’s the place.”

Armed with a new mantra — to not overthink things and just make a record that he’d want to listen to at home, the ideas came freely and easily. Pairing up with Tobias Kuhn to co-write and produce the bulk of the record, their first writing session saw them pen intention-setting lead single, ‘Connection,’ in just a few hours. Things were moving well with the pair laying down five tracks, but in March 2020, COVID put a stop to Pritchard’s European dream, forcing him to return home to the UK to finish the writing sessions over Zoom until Tobias was able to fly out to London and record with him and the rest of the band, Hugh Harris (lead guitar/synthesiser/bass) and Alexis Nunez (drums).

Despite the dual locations, there’s a distinct Berlin sensibility to ’10 Tracks To Echo In The Dark.’ Flirting with genres from 80s synth-pop to funk to prog rock, the album is still, at its core, an indie record and a Kooks one, at that.

It’s a record that doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel but takes that classic Kooks sound and adds something of a retro-futurist slant — both sonically and in mindset. It’s an album about being hopeful and seeing the great in the world, despite the darkness. There are unapologetic love songs (‘Without A Doubt,’ ‘Oasis’), tracks about partying through pain (‘Connection’), terrible exes (‘Cold Heart’) and even a song for Pritchard’s newborn son, Julian. (‘Beautiful World’), born prematurely while the band were on tour in Mexico.

Getting married and becoming a father you get a sense that we’re hearing from a new Pritchard — one whose demons are behind him and is optimistic about the future.

“I really hope that sense of inner peace comes across,” says Pritchard of the album’s resoundingly optimistic outlook. “I really want to have fun with my life at this point. But also — it’s kinda a reflection of what I was feeling in real-time in a pre-and-post COVID world. I was reading a lot of sci-fi — like Philip K. Dick, Azimov and surreal stuff like Boris Vian — which is obviously really distracting from what’s going on in the world, but helped me be imaginative with the songs.”

It’s a relief to hear a healthier perspective from a band who have had their struggles played out in the press for fifteen years. Bagging a slew of top 20 hits in their teens (‘Naive,’ ‘She Moves In Her Own Way’) with 2006 quadruple-platinum debut album ‘Inside In/Inside Out,’ the young band didn’t always know how to handle everything that came along with superstardom.

“Mental health has been a big focus of our band for quite a while now. Because we’ve all struggled in our own ways. That’s not to say we haven’t had amazing lives, but just we struggled with fame big time, like really struggled. And we got it wrong a lot of the time.

“We did get famous quite quickly and we didn’t have a lot of the stability required to not let that seriously affect you. All of us, in our own ways, have made some very poor judgements and some really good judgements. And we’re here, so it means we’ve done very well to keep it going and to keep ourselves sane. But I have ultimate compassion for anyone who gets famous anywhere.”

But as with everyone, there comes a point in life where you reach a sense of stillness, you become more comfortable in your own skin and the right path becomes clear to you. The band have been experimental over the years — most notably on 2014’s Inflo-produced jazz-funk album ‘Listen’ — something that has been key to their longevity, but getting back to what people love about The Kooks was front of Pritchard’s mind: whether that person was “a fifteen-year-old kid in South Africa or someone who was at our first concert.”

The result isn’t a rinse and repeat of their earlier sound, though. Instead, we get those infectious Kooks melodies and riffs, but over synths and electronic beats. There’s even some saxophone in there, moving their trademark sound well into 2022.

“Indie is a word we were running from for quite a long time,” he admits. “The band’s done a lot of different records, but we do have quite a style. A big part of it was not running from anything. We’re gonna just do what we do, but better and with a few more fresh ideas.”

In the studio, he made some rules: not to overcomplicate things, throw in some old-school Kooks riffs, “the very classic, Naive-y kinda stuff, but with more minimalism” and to get back to that noughties thing of treated vocals. “It’s not that I hate my voice — I just mainly dislike it. So the more you can disguise it, the better!”

Having that focus helped make a cohesive record that leans on the band’s legacy while still sounding fresh. “On certain albums you make decisions based on other things and you start trying to chase your own tail. This record isn’t about trying to smash everything up and reinvent. COVID hitting in the middle of recording was a good time to kind of really reflect on all our albums and be really happy with our journey.”

As The Kooks, continue to reach an ever-growing audience of young fans, ’10 Tracks To Echo In The Dark’ feels like a mission statement. It’s a celebration of getting through troubled times and a rallying cry for our future.

This is a band whose career highs are still to come. They’re right to feel optimistic about what’s next and that the future might be a little bit brighter.

And the key to seeing fifteen years of success as a band?

“Hard work,” says Pritchard. “And a lot of luck.”

The Vaccines

Combat Sports is the sound of The Vaccines being The Vaccines. Their fourth album is the sound of one of the defining British rock and roll bands of their generation at full throttle, setting aside pop experiments and concentrating on what caused the rabid excitement at their arrival in 2010. Combat Sports is a record of guitars, of brevity, of speed, of breathless excitement.

“We rediscovered who we were and what kind of band we wanted to be,” says singer, songwriter and rhythm guitarist Justin Young. “We wanted to make a record to solidify that in our minds, and the minds of other people. We wanted to make the best record we’ve ever made.”

Combat Sports was born of troubled times. The band ended the campaign for their third album, English Graffiti, in a mess. Members of the band had lifestyle issues and health issues – being in the band wasn’t the fun it had once been. They were also questioning themselves and their music: although it had been a No 2 hit in the UK and won some of the best reviews of their career, The Vaccines knew what the audience wanted – and what they loved playing – was rock and roll.

“We lost sight of who we were and why we were there,” Young says. “When you’re as insecure and self-aware as me, there’s a constant process of second-guessing everything you do. I’ve brought The Vaccines into my heart again now. Being in a band is about compromise and collaboration and I think it’s coming to terms with what we are as a collective and falling back in love with that and making the best record we can for us as a band, rather than as individuals.”

Then came the departure of drummer Pete Robertson, causing the remaining trio to realise something about the group: “We decided we needed to make it fun again.” Lead guitarist Freddie Cowan and bassist Árni Árnason provided the manifesto: “The band were saying: ‘We love it when you bring in rock’n’roll songs – they’re so much more fun to play.’”

That was crucial for Young, because he realised the Vaccines needed to be a guitar band again. Specifically, they needed to be a band where lead and rhythm guitar worked together, as on their debut, What Did You Expect From The Vaccines? “With great bands, you need to be able to hear the guitar and recognise them,” he says. “Lots of people would have been learning Freddie’s licks from the first two albums – there are 11 guitar solos on the new album – we were encouraging him to play again.”

A key moment in Young realising the power of rock and roll came on a night out in a Los Angeles bar. It’s something he remembers vividly, seeing how a great guitar band could set a room alight. “The DJ played Everybody’s Happy Nowadays, and all the girls in there were dancing so intensely to it. I thought: ‘Fuck! I remember why I love the Buzzcocks – for these really sad, forlorn, dumb, catchy songs.’ And I realised rock and roll was sexy again. I’d forgotten it could be sexy.”

The group, aided by keyboard player Tim Lanham and drummer Yoann Intonti, initially as session players, set about hammering the new songs into shape through late 2016, rehearsing in south London, during which time they realised they didn’t want to be a three-piece. So Lanham and Intonti were made full members of the band, which reinvigorated the group. “You remember how lucky you’ve been – you start getting excited for the new guys experiencing things for the first time, and it breathes new life into the group. The shows in summer 2016 [at the Reading and Leeds festivals] were fucking amazing, and we bottled that feeling.” By May 2017 a total of around 80 songs had been whittled down to 11 and recorded in Sheffield with producer Ross Orton to become Combat Sports.

Orton’s work with bands such as Arctic Monkeys, M.I.A and the Fall made him the ideal candidate for what The Vaccines wanted to deliver. “When I spoke to him: he said, ‘Why don’t you just come up to Sheffield, plug your guitars in, and I promise you I’ll make a good fucking record,’” Young says. “That was in January, and I was still thinking I wanted to work with a harem of pop producers. But I realised Ross Orton would make a great modern record and the right record.

The location, too – away from home, but not somewhere where they might be distracted by turning into tourists – helped The Vaccines, allowing them to focus on making a record to define their career. “There were no friends’ birthdays we had to leave early for, or weekends away. It became all consuming.”

The result is 11 songs that go back to what the Vaccines were all about in the first place: brash, bold, rock and roll songs that mix melancholy and euphoria. “I wanted the songs to be really honest,” Young says. “I wanted Freddie and my energy to be at the forefront of all them, and I wanted that visceral urgency that got attributed to us in the early days to be present in all of them. Without being regressive I wanted to build on the musicality of English Graffiti but for the songs to be fun, upbeat, exciting and loud.” From pure Vaccines rock and roll (Put It on a T-Shirt, I Can’t Quit, Surfing In The Sky) through to powerpop (Out in the Street, which was inspired by Big Star, and Take It Easy, which came from listening to Dwight Tilley and Tom Petty) Combat Sports a record that defiantly reasserts the Vaccines’ case to be one of the great English rock bands of their time.

That defiance is reflected in the album’s title, which was thought of after Young and Cowan came to blows on the last day of recording (“We’ve never been shy of telling home truths to each other,” he says. “We’re like brothers. And brothers fight.”), but wasn’t referring directly to that. “I don’t see the title as a negative,” Young says. “On the contrary, to me it embodies survival, strength, commitment, glory, winning. We’re not just saying being in a band and making a record feels like a combat sport – we know how lucky we are. If you listen to the lyrics, we’re saying life is a combat sport. Love is a combat sport. Friendship is a combat sport. Mental health is a combat sport. But there is so much hope and positivity in the melody, and in our love affair with music, too.”

Daisy the Great

As Daisy the Great, Kelley Nicole Dugan and Mina Walker make folk-inflected indie rock that spans a multitude of moods, capable of being clever, devastating, or both simultaneously, spanning harmony-laden pop to powerhouse balladry. The pair first met as acting majors at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts where they began co-writing a musical about a fictional band before realizing they could make it happen in real life and set out as Daisy the Great.

2017 saw Daisy the Great make an auspicious debut with “The Record Player Song,” which quickly proved an immediate smash now boasting over 250M worldwide streams and multiple viral moments on TikTok. A full-length debut LP,  I’m Not Getting Any Taller , arrived in 2019, followed in 2020 by the quarantine-born  Soft Songs  EP. In 2021, Daisy the Great teamed with acclaimed indie-pop trio AJR for “Record Player,” a brand new song inspired by their original 2017 hit.

Having now grown into a full six-piece band currently featuring Matt Lau on guitar, Bernardo Ochoa on bass, Matti Dunietz on drums, and Brie Archer on additional vocals, Daisy the Great first heralded  ALL YOU NEED IS TIME  with the dazzling “Glitter. Hailed by  Atwood Magazine  as “ a dreamy, inspiring alternative anthem to let our light shine, ” the track is joined by an official music video – directed and edited by Dugan and Walker. The band also visited  90.9 The Bridge in KC   for a session that NPR included in their 2022 “Sessions of The Year” list and appeared on  The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’s  “Late Show Me Music” series, available on the show’s  Instagram , YouTube, and Facebook channels. 2023 saw the band releasing a  new version  of “Tell Me Have You Been Dancing” featuring vocals from indie pop artist Claud and a reimagined emo lo-fi version of their song “Glitter” titled “Glitter 2”. The band released two new songs “Looking U Up” and “Tough Kid” just ahead of their European headline tour, with more music to follow.

“ Our music is generally pretty introspective, and we are often interested in the complexities or ironies we see within ourselves ,” Dugan says. “ That’s something we love about writing—you can say something small and delicate and true that maybe feels scary to say, but once you put it out there, it can turn into a comfort for anyone that might also be feeling that way. ”

The Kooks - 'Inside In / Inside Out' 15th Anniversary Tour

Released in 2006, Inside In/Inside Out was the first full-length introduction to The Kooks, who had emerged only a year prior. The album, which has sold more than 2 million copies in the UK where it is certified 5x platinum, featured the band’s biggest hit “ Naïve .”

  • Taylor Swift's new album, " The Tortured Poets Department ," is almost guaranteed to be a bestseller.
  • But no matter how well it does, it won't be the way Swift earns most of her money this year.
  • The remaining leg of her Eras Tour is expected to add much more to Swift's billion-dollar fortune.

Insider Today

Taylor Swift released her new album, " The Tortured Poets Department ," at midnight, and, in what should be no surprise to anyone on this planet in the year 2024, it caused a scene.

Her album garnered millions of streams within hours. There's almost no doubt it'll top the Billboard chart like the 13 Swift albums before it.

But no matter how many platinum certifications it collects or streams it racks up on Spotify, "The Tortured Poets Department" won't be Swift's biggest money-maker this year.

The remaining leg of her Eras Tour — kicking off in Paris next month and running through December — is instead expected to be what contributes most to her fortune, which Bloomberg estimated to be $1.1 billion last year.

"Live music is the engine of the global music business," Clayton Durant, an adjunct professor at NYU Steinhardt's Music Business Program who's the founder of CAD Management, told Business Insider. "Her tour is probably going to earn 10 to 15 times more than her streaming."

Swift's Eras Tour brought in more than $1 billion in ticket sales last year over its 66 dates. By the end of this year, she's set to have played another 86. Swift's cut is unknown, but based on industry standards, she'll surely earn nine figures in 2024 from ticket sales.

Concerts don't only bring in money from ticket sales.

Pollstar estimates that Swifties spend an average of $40 a head on merch at her concerts — that adds up to about $175 million in gross merch sales last year. Swift's camp keeps the majority of that.

Bloomberg estimated that between box office and merchandise, Swift pocketed $225 million, pre-tax, from her first 57 Eras Tour dates. Career earnings from ticket sales and merchandise account for 34% of her total net worth, while earnings from music streaming and sales account for 18%, Bloomberg estimates.

Swift isn't alone in making money on the road.

In 2021, the last year Billboard made a list of music's top earners, seven out of the 10 top money makers earned more than half of their income from touring.

But the music industry didn't always function this way. Before the advent of streaming, musicians made most of their fortune selling CDs, cassette tapes, and vinyl records .

"Physical music sales made up the bulk of artists' revenue pre-streaming, and that revenue was what enabled artists to tour. These days, the equation has flipped," Tatiana Cirisano, a senior music-industry analyst at MIDiA, told BI over email.

Streaming made listening to recorded music much cheaper. For less than the price of one CD — or for free, illegally or with ads — people could get all the songs they wanted.

"The moment Napster hit, it changed the paradigm, and it really honestly diluted the value of music," Durant said.

To be sure, Swift is still making tens of millions, if not more, on streaming and record sales each year — more than almost any other artist on the planet.

Streaming services such as Spotify pay out artists on a pro-rata model: There's a pot, made up of subscription and ad revenue, paid out to artists each year. Those with the biggest share of the platform's total streams get the biggest piece of it.

But "if you're an individual artist, you have to have a pretty massive audience to be able to earn a meaningful share of that revenue — which is paid out to you after your label gets its cut," Cirisano said.

Last year, Swift was the most streamed artist on both Apple and Spotify. One of every 78 songs streamed in the US last year was a Swift song, according to the music-data firm Luminate. She'll probably rank at or near the top again, between " The Tortured Poets Department " and a streaming lift from the second leg of her Eras Tour.

Swift is also set to earn more than most artists from physical music sales. Last year, she was responsible for one out of every 15 vinyl records sold, according to Luminate. Cirisano said Swift's rabid followers saw physical records as "a symbol of fandom" and a way to support Swift.

That said, without Eras, Swift would just be a poor centimillionaire.

Taylor Swift reveals double album in '2 a.m. surprise'. Here are the best fan reactions

The day all Swifties have been waiting for has finally arrived. Taylor Swift's 15th album, " The Tortured Poets Department ," dropped at 11 p.m. CST Thursday night.

Swift, chairman of the "Tortured Poets Department," did not disappoint.

'It's a 2 a.m. surprise'

The Eras Tour singer barely gave fans time to process TTPD before releasing an additional 15 songs under "TTPD: The Anthology."

"It's a 2 a.m. surprise," Swift wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. The double album's new tracks went live at 1 a.m. CST early Friday morning.

The secret double album's new tracks include:

  • "The Black Dog"
  • "imgonnagetyouback"
  • "The Albatross"
  • "Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus"
  • "How Did It End?"
  • "So High School"
  • "I Hate It Here"
  • "thanK you aiMee"
  • "I Look in People's Windows"
  • "The Prophecy"
  • "Cassandra"
  • "The Bolter"
  • "The Manuscript"

The Eras Tour singer joined Threads at midnight, which shares parent company Meta with Facebook and Instagram.

As part of the week leading up to the announcement, Swift worked behind the scenes with Threads to create a countdown when users pulled down on her Instagram page. The interface connected them to pre-follow the singer. At the stroke of 12 a.m., a new pull-down countdown revealed two hours.

TTPD's track titles are brutal. Fans speculated the album was about Swift’s six-year relationship with English actor Joe Alwyn and their breakup. Both stars kept the relationship out of the public eye. The back of the first version of the album reads, “I love you, it’s ruining me,” serving as a dagger-to-the-chest harbinger.

Swifties react to 'Tortured Poets Department'

Swift's double album reveal had fans reacting in all caps − the social media version of screaming.

"YOU ARE LITERALLY A GENIUS AND MY WORST NIGHTMARE AT THE SAME TIME I LOVE YOU," one user wrote on X .

"TAYLOR WE STILL HAVEN’T RECOVERED FROM THE FIRST ONE," another said .

Swifties are already busy making connections between some "TTPD" lyrics and lyrics in previous albums.
