Boston is a city rich in culture and history. Dating back to 1630, the capital of Massachusetts has played a crucial roll in American history.

Furthermore, Boston is where Benjamin Franklin attended school, where the Boston Tea Party protest occurred, where the Boston Massacre took place, and much more.

Without the city of Boston, the US wouldn’t be what it is today.

Currently, Boston is a coastal city brimming with character and charm. The city boasts world-class restaurants and has opulent buildings adorning its cobbled streets. It’s a place where old history meets new modern times

Ultimately, Boston is an overall fun and energetic city fit for a solo traveler.

Solo Travel Boston: Great for Any Time of Year!

Boston experiences all four seasons throughout the year, with a particularly long winter. With each season offering something special there is truly no bad time to visit Massachusetts.  

In the winter expect freezing cold weather with white snow covered streets. Spring brings cherry blossoms galore, framing iconic brick houses in historic neighborhoods. Summertime you can find yourself cruising by kayak along the Charles River, basking in the heat of the summer sun. And in fall find yourself surrounded by the wildly popular New England fall foliage.

With each season offering something different there are plenty of reasons to want to visit Boston year round. And in a walking city, there’s truly no better place to be as a solo traveler.

Solo Travel Boston: Planning Before You Go

1. train transportation.

Boston is a completely walkable city, but when needed there is a cheap and expansive train system that weaves throughout the city referred to as the “T”.  

To ride the T you must purchase a CharlieTicket, which you can find at every train station.  The ride will cost $2.75/way or if you plan on taking the T multiple times in one day you can buy a day pass for $12.  

However, if you plan on staying for longer than a weekend a one week Charlie pass will set you back a mere $21.25.

When it comes to navigating the T, you may be overwhelmed at first.  With five different “lines” to figure out, there are maps in each train station showing you the way.  Or even easier, download the free “Transit” app for directions.  Simply put in where you’re leaving from, where you’re going to, and the app will tell you how to get to your destination the quickest and which lines to get on and off of. 

 The train also services the Boston Logan International Airport, so if you’re arriving by air you can easily take a free bus that will but you to the red line or the blue line to get into town.

2. Where to Stay Traveling to Boston Alone

Boston covers approximately 90 square miles and claims at least 22 different neighborhoods. 

With each neighborhood offering something different there are plenty of places to choose from when planning your travels.  From historic neighborhoods to newer neighborhoods, and everything in between, there’s something that will suite everyone’s needs.

If you’re coming to Boston to learn about the historic side of the city, Beacon Hill or the North End may be for you.  Beacon Hill is where you’ll find the iconic Federal and Victorian brick row houses and the picturesque Acorn Street.  

In the North End you’ll get a taste if Italy plus find yourself surrounded by some of Boston’s oldest buildings.  

If you’re looking for a more energetic part of the city, downtown Boston or the Fenway neighborhood is where you’ll want to be.  Downtown you’ll be surrounded by skyscrapers, bars, and restaurants; finding yourself near many historic sites while in the middle of the Financial Center.  And if sports are your thing, Fenway is home to Red Sox baseball and also a neighborhood brimming with bars.  

For a “fancy” taste of Boston, opt for the iconic Back Bay.  Here is where you’ll find Boston’s “Rodeo Drive” – Newbury Street – plus high-end restaurants and cocktail lounges.  

And lastly, if you want to get a feel for the “newer” side of the city, a stay in Seaport District is where you’ll want to be.  

But no matter which neighborhood you choose, walking or taking the train between each is easy and seamless, allowing you to explore the many different facets of Boston.

Best Things to Do in Boston Alone

Day 1: learning boston’s history.

During day one in Boston, you will start your day by getting a feel for American history by walking the Freedom Trail.  The Freedom Trail is 2.5 miles long, running from Beacon Hill to Charlestown.  

While free tours are offered through Free Tours by Foot , if you prefer to go at it alone, The Freedom Trail is a great resource.   Make sure to come hungry.  Halfway through the Freedom Trail you’ll come to Faneuil Hall Marketplace, which used to be an open forum-meeting hall.  Now you can find the Quincy Market here full of shops, bakeries, and restaurants.  Depending on the weather you can choose to dine either inside or outside, get takeaway or sit and enjoy your meal.  

(Please note that you can only stop to enjoy food at Quincy Market if you’re choosing to go at the Freedom Trail alone.  If you’ve chosen to take a tour you won’t have time to stop and eat).

Once you’ve seen the 16 sites on the Freedom Trail, head back to Beacon Hill, where you began, to enjoy one of the most picturesque neighborhoods in all of Boston. Visit Acorn Street, one of the most photographed streets in America (and for good reason) or boutique shop along Charles Street.  If the weather permits walk along the Charles River Esplanade or relax in the oldest park in America – Boston Common, dating back to 1634.

Once nighttime rolls around make your way to Boston’s “Little Italy” – the North End.  Inhabited since 1630, the North End is Boston’s oldest residential community.  Here you’ll find Italian restaurants lining the narrow streets, usually with long lines of customers hoping to get in.  

If you’re in the mood for Italian, head to Pomodoro or if you’re in the market for seafood, particularly a famed lobster roll, head to Neptune Oyster.  Both restaurants don’t take reservations and usually have a line, but both restaurants are worth waiting in line for.

Day 2: Exploring the In’s and Out’s of Boston

On your second day in Boston start your day early with brunch at The Friendly Toast in Back Bay. Enjoy Bloody Mary flights, mimosa flights, and items ranging from benedicts and omelets all the way to French toast and pancakes served in a hip, diner-like setting.

In the afternoon set out to see even more that Boston has to offer.  

If you like shopping head to Back Bay to shop along the expensive Newbury Street.  If you like beer perhaps head to Samuel Adams Brewery to take a tour.  If you like sports and you’re in town for a Red Sox game, I’d highly recommend heading to Fenway Park to see the game!  Or if you’d like to see a newer side of Boston, head to Seaport.  Here hang out on the rooftop of the Envoy Hotel (closed certain times of the year, make sure to call ahead); or grab a cocktail at the menu-less cocktail lounge – Drink.

If you’ve seen enough of Boston, take a quick and easy day trip up to Cambridge to tour Harvard University.  Taking the red line from Boston will drop you off smack in the middle of Harvard.  Go on a historic, student-led, tour of the University or explore alone.  Either way there are tons of bars and restaurants around the University and in Cambridge once you’re done exploring Harvard.

End your last night in Boston in the South End neighborhood at Beehive.  A top-notch restaurant with a lively atmosphere and bohemian vibes; plus live music each and every night.  Immersing yourself in the great atmosphere and live music, you’ll forget that you’re solo!

With that, a weekend solo in Boston comes to an end.  If you’re lucky enough to stay longer, there are still tons of neighborhood gems left to explore.  Or get out of town entirely!  Head to Spooky Salem and learn all about the witch trials. Rent a car and head south to the Cape for a stay in Provincetown.  Or head to Newport in Rhode Island to visit the sprawling Glided Age mansions!

No matter what the weekend brings, there’s so much to learn, experience, and enjoy in Boston.

Things To Do Solo in Boston in the Morning

Okay, so whilst it is a bit cliché for America on your Boston solo trip, you have to try the bagels served at the South End Buttery. They have so many different breakfast choices and amazing coffee, the perfect way to fuel yourself for a day of exploring.

You can follow Tremont Street from the South End, which will lead you directly to Boston Common – the first public park in the USA. If you walk around the park, you will get a great view of the city’s financial district and Massachusetts State House.

Boston Walking Tour

Parallel to Boston Common is Washington Street, which is the best place for some retail therapy, especially at the giant Macy’s, and is the ideal location to grab a mid-morning coffee. Or take a short walking tour along Movie Mile to see this area with others.

Mid-Morning to Lunchtime

To continue your solo travel to Boston, from Washington Street, you can walk towards the Government Center, which is home to the Faneuil Hall Marketplace, the best place to buy your Boston jumpers and t-shirts!

Boston Public Market is about a five-minute walk away from Faneuil Hall and has all kinds of options for lunch, from falafels to pizza to bagels (again!).

It is also a great place to sample some local beers and ales and immerse yourself in the culture, but make sure you have your ID handy!

You can explore historical Boston on a walking tour whilst seeing the Public Market and the Old North Church and enjoying donuts whilst discovering local history.

In The Afternoon

One of the free things to do in Boston alone is to wander around the harbour. It is breathtaking – literally if it’s as windy as it was when I visited. From the Wharf, head towards Back Bay and aim for the Prudential Building; it’s the second tallest building in Boston, so it is pretty hard to miss.

If you prefer to learn about the USA's revolutionary history on a guided tour, you can combine Back Bay with the Freedom Trail on a walking tour. * Check rates & availability: 2 Hour Back Bay Tour

If you decide to include the tower, you could spend a day in the Prudential Tower itself, as there are many shops (including a massive Sephora!), restaurants, and bars. But the real gem is on the 50th floor of the Pru: the Skywalk Observatory.

This is the highest observation deck in New England and gives you a panoramic view of Boston and surrounding areas. It really is the best way to experience the city and one of the best things to do in Boston by yourself, as you can see Fenway Park and even Harvard University, which you otherwise might not be able to see in just one day.

Fenway Park

Fenway Park in Boston, the iconic home of the Red Sox, is a must-visit spot for sports fans. It's not just about baseball; it's about soaking up the history and vibes. You can't miss the famous Green Monster!

Take a tour and dive into the stories of legendary players, feel the excitement of game days, and bask in the park's timeless charm. Whether you're a hardcore fan or just curious, Fenway Park is a place where sports magic happens.

Where To Dine

If you are feeling peckish, check out EATALY, located in the Prudential Center. As you may have guessed, it specialises in all things Italian, including absolutely amazing freshly-made pizza – totally worth it!

It also has four restaurants to choose from, so it will suit any budget, and has loads of cool things to buy as souvenirs or presents.

In The Evening

Choosing a place for dinner is going to be difficult, as wherever you are in Boston, there are great options for food. I would recommend heading back towards the North End, which you can do via cab or subway. The North End is known for its Italian-American population, so if a big bowl of pasta is what you fancy after a long day of exploring, this is the place to be.

Another fantastic thing to do alone in Boston at night is to take a sunset cruise along Boston Harbour to see the city come to life when the sun sets. From Rowes Wharf, you'll get to see the city's famous landmarks as well as the historic USS Constitution. * Check rates and availability: Harbour cruise  

From The North End, you are about a mile away from South Station, which is Boston’s busiest transport hub and will get you to the airport or help you on your way to your next destination.

If you do have longer in the USA, you can catch a coach to so many other places from South Station for a very reasonable price, so just check out the other states you plan to visit before you go! It can be overwhelming to plan a Boston solo trip, especially in one massive and iconic city.

Day 1 (Fort Point & Seaport) 

1. Go to Fan Pier Park for Sunrise or Sunset 

Begin your Boston trip at a place with an iconic city view. Fan Pier is at the heart of the harbor and overlooks Boston’s main city center. 

Noah’s Take: I arrived in Boston on an Amtrak train and got off at Boston’s South Station. It was a short walk across the Summer Street Bridge to the park. 

The Porter Square Bookstore is a cute, independent bookstore close to Fan Pier Park. 

Noah’s Take: It might be the perfect place to warm yourself up if you visit Boston during the winter months, as I did. 

I conveniently found a Trader Joe’s in Seaport as I walked back towards the city center. I know this is a controversial opinion, but you can save a lot of money. 

Noah’s Take: Buy a few sandwiches and protein bars, then skip a few meals. Your wallet will thank you, and Trader Joe’s has a good selection of ready-to-eat foods that are exciting enough to make you feel like you are on vacation. 

If you want to save money, stay at a hostel. It is simple.

Noah’s Take: I stayed at HI Boston during my Boston trip. I was very impressed with this hostel. They have a great, modern kitchen. They have plenty of tables and couches for chilling and getting work done. 

• Each room has a large locker, but make sure to bring your own lock
• The hostel is also in a convenient location, where you are close to most of the city’s main attractions. 

Day 2 (Beacon Hill, Havard, & Back Bay) 

Acorn Street is the most “instagrammable” place in Boston, arguably. 

Step back in time and visit Beacon Hill’s iconic cobblestone streets and row houses. There is a reason why this neighborhood is one of the most expensive areas to live in in Boston.

6. Walk down Charles Street and take the train to Harvard 

After a visit to Acorn Street, you can easily access Charles Street, lined with cafes and boutiques. In 7 minutes, you can find the Charles/MGH Subway Station. 

Take the Red Line. It will cost about $2, and you will reach Harvard. 

Noah’s Take: I easily got a round-trip ticket to Harvard at the station using the ticket machine, so there is no need to worry about this process, but if you want to be extra prepared, read this beginner’s guide to the subway from the MBTA.

Just explore at your own pace and live your Harvard fantasy, but remember, this is a college, not a tourist attraction. There are students here trying to learn. 

Noah’s Take: Tourists alike flock to the Johnston Gate and Sever Hall , but there is no need to plan out the exact spots you need to visit on campus.

• However, I do recommend visiting The Harvard Museum of Natural History . I did not make it on my trip, but it gets rave reviews. 

I took the subway back to my hostel to eat a quick lunch and then headed out again, walking towards Back Bay. The first stop on my walk was Trinity Church. 

Trinity Church is considered one of the country’s top 10 buildings by the American Association of Architects. 

Right across from Trinity Church is Copley Square, where you can find sculptures and skateboarders. This neighborhood is famous for historical structures like Trinity Church, the Boston Public Library, Old South Church and the Hancock Tower . 

Dubbed one of the most gorgeous libraries in the country, if you are in the Copley Square area, a great solo trip activity is to visit this public library. 

This is a library, not a museum, but you will find murals, vaulted ceilings, and the most-see Bates Reading Room. 

Noah’s Take: Pay extra attention to the library’s hours. I visited Copley Square on a Sunday in February, and sadly, it was closed. As of January 2023, here are the library hours:

• Monday through Thursday: 9am–9pm
• Friday and Saturday: 9am–5pm
• Sunday: 1pm–5pm (Oct. through mid-May)

Back Bay is known for being fashionable and full of specialty shops. It is even known for being one of the most expensive streets in the world. 

Noah’s Take: Since this is a low-budget, solo trip, I only spent a little bit of time shopping here. It was more interesting to walk the street and watch pedestrians fill row houses that were converted into luxury shopping storefronts. This is not your average shopping street . 

I stumbled upon Summer Shack after exploring Back Bay. It is an excellent place to eat staple Boston seafood without breaking the bank.

Noah’s Take: The Baked Oyster Rockefeller I bought for $16 was amazing. However, the Griddled Cornbread wasn’t my favorite. 

12. Picnic at Golden Hour at the Charles River Esplanade for a Great Solo Experience

Picnics are a perfect solo travel activity, and this park is a great place to walk and people-watch. 

Noah’s Take: Sometimes, eating alone at a restaurant can be intimidating. So, I took my Summer Shack order and walked 20 minutes to the Charles River Esplanade.

I completely loved the scenery and watching the sunset on the Charles River. Let me clarify; there is nothing wrong with eating at a restaurant alone! However, it can be more enjoyable to eat outside under golden light.

As you head back to Back Bay, you can easily walk to the Commonwealth Avenue Mall, 32 acres of green space .

From December 1st to April 1st , the mall is illuminated at night with lights, making it an enjoyable night walk. 

To finish your day in Back Bay, you can treat yourself to dessert. Believe me. You will deserve it after a full day of walking.

Levain Bakery is known for selling New York’s Most Famous Cookie, but I found myself craving the “crispy-on-the-outside, gooey-on-the-inside” cookies in Boston. 

Back Bay has plenty of dessert options. It is your solo trip, so please do what your heart desires!

Day 3 (Black Heritage and Freedom Trail, Quincy Market, & Charlestown) 

HI Boston is only a 5-minute walk from the Boston Common

Boston Common is considered the oldest public park in the United States. It has been the epicenter of American history. 

It is also the start of my favorite attraction in Boston: the Freedom Trail. 

Before you walk the Freedom Trail, I recommend you walk the 1.6-mile self-guided Black Heritage Trail. Download the National Park Service App , put in headphones, and learn more about the thriving Black community that lived in Beacon Hill. 

The App provides audio tracks for each site and a map indicating the historic buildings along the trail, just like it does for the Freedom Trail. 

You can start the trail at the Robert Gould Shaw and Massachusetts 54th Regiment Memorial, across from the Massachusetts State House. 

Noah’s Take: It was highly insightful to tour over a dozen historical sites that told the often-overlooked stories of Black Americans. Most sites are private residences , but you can go inside the Abiel Smith School and the African Meeting House. 

In the middle of walking the Black Heritage Trail, I was starving. Conveniently, there is a Whole Foods Market just steps off the trail.

Your dining options are limited in North Beacon, especially budget eats, so a quick stop at Whole Foods was perfect as I continued my walking tour of Boston. 

After finishing the Black Heritage Trail, I retraced my steps to the State House to begin the Freedom Trail. 

Perhaps the most famous attraction in Boston, the Freedom Trail, is a 2.5-mile, red-brick trail through Boston’s historic neighborhoods that tells the story of the American Revolution. 

Noah’s Take: The Freedom Trail is the perfect activity for an enlightening solo trip. Download the NPS App and access audio tracks for 22 historic sites. I loved learning the history at my own pace and the ease of simply following red bricks on the sidewalk as I explored the Downtown, North End, and Charlestown neighborhoods of Boston.  The NPS says you can spend an entire weekend along the Freedom Trail; they are right. The beauty of the Freedom Trail is it can be extended or shortened. It took me about six hours to walk the entire trail, with stops along most sites. 

Sites to not miss: Granary Burying Ground, Old South Meeting House, Boston Massacre Site, Faneuil Hall, Paul Revere House, Old North Church, Copp’s Hill Burying Ground, USS Constitution, and the Bunker Hill Monument.

One feature of the Freedom Trail that you must take advantage of is Faneuil Hall. It was the home of America’s first Town Meeting . 

Faneuil Hall also sits as the epicenter of the Freedom Trail, surrounded by Quincy Market and all its fanfare. 

Noah’s Take: If you do not have time to do the entire Freedom Trail, stop by Faneuil Hall. You will find plenty of activities and see a lively part of Boston. 

Quincy Market is a bustling shopping area in the Historic Downtown. From brand shopping to street performers , there is something for everyone here.

It is the perfect place to grab a lobster roll as you take a break from walking the Freedom Trail. 

I went inside the Old North Church for $5. According to oldnorth.com , the church welcomes over 500,000 visitors a year, and I was glad I was one of them.

Old North Church is famous for signaling to Paul Revere that the British were coming. Three Boston Patriots hung two lanterns in the church’s steeple as the British marched to Lexington and Concord. 

As you walk the Freedom Trail towards Charlestown, you can visit the Paul Revere Park . It was a picturesque place to eat a snack and rest my feet.

I also saw plenty of dogs, and I very much enjoyed their company. Solo trips are only complete with a nice relaxing trip to a park. 

23. No Boston Solo Trip is complete without a Visit Charleston and the Bunker Hill Monument 

At the end of the Freedom Trail is the Bunker Hill Monument. I recommend you visit Bunker Hill before the Navy Yard. Keep reading to see why.

The Bunker Hill Monument is grand and honors the Battle of Bunker Hill , where Colonial forces showed they could fight effectively against the British. This battle is considered a turning point in the war.

Next, you should retrace your steps to visit the Navy Yard Visitors Center. It makes this list because it is free!

Noah’s Take: The Visitors Center has a few interesting exhibits and artifacts, but the Navy Yard’s highlight is visiting the two ships that sit past the Visitors Center.

25. Visit the Below Deck of an Active Navy Ship: The USS Constitution 

One of the final stops on the Freedom Trail is The USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship afloat . 

After a security check (make sure to have a form of identity ready to be checked), you can go aboard the ship for free. YES, for free. 

There is also a USS Constitution Museum. However, it is not free. 

Noah’s Take: I enjoyed going below deck and seeing the ship’s inner workings. It was a bit cramped, and you had to climb a few ladders. But it was totally worth it. 

Alongside the USS Constitution is the WWII Cassin Young. This ship was involved in seven Pacific battles in World War II. 

You can take a self-guided tour and walk along the ship deck… for FREE. I thoroughly enjoyed this tour as well.  

After touring the Cassin Young, walk 10 minutes to the Charlestown Navy Yard Ferry Terminal. Take the Charlestown Ferry to Long Wharf. The trip will cost about $5, and it is worth every penny. 

Noah’s Take: Taking the Charlestown Ferry is the perfect, most picturesque way to travel back after finishing the trail. No need to walk two more miles or take the subway and miss out on epic views. 

Once you complete the Freedom Trail, reward yourself with a beautiful cruise across the bay. 

The ferry will drop you off right in front of Christopher Columbus Park. It is a nice park to people-watch, and if you plan it properly, it can be a calming place to enjoy the sunset. 

There are plenty of cute picture opportunities in this area as well. 

One of my final stops in Boston was at Boston’s Public Market. This is no ordinary market. It is a non-profit organization that tries to support local entrepreneurs. 

There is something for every appetite here. You can find locally sourced New England Food, from fresh foods to prepared meals.  

To end your enlightening and exhausting solo trip in Boston, take some selfies in the street to document the experience.

As I walked back to Boston South Station to take an Amtrak train home, I found a few posts along the street where I could prop my camera up and snag a shot.

It was the perfect way to close out an excellent solo trip. Of course, no trip will or can be perfect, but Boston is a fantastic city for rewarding solo travel. 

I spent about $170 on my solo trip. I saved considerably by opting for supermarket food over dining out each meal. Essentially all the activities I did in the city were free, besides going inside the Old North Church.

In addition to the delectable cuisine, Pier 6 also offers an impressive selection of signature cocktails and craft beers that perfectly complement the menu. What more could you ask for?

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

The Barking Crab

Politics | Tim Walz will take the Harris show on a solo tour with scheduled stop in Boston

Vp contender will hit california, colorado, massachusetts, rhode island, new york over a three-day sprint.

Walz, who is running for the vice presidency alongside current-VP Kamala Harris, will arrive in the midst of a “national travel and fundraising blitz” that includes stops in California, Colorado, New York, Rhode Island, and the Bay State.

“On Tuesday, August 13, in his first solo Harris-Walz campaign event as Vice President Harris’ running mate, Governor Tim Walz will travel to Los Angeles, California, where he will deliver remarks at the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) 2024 convention,” the campaign wrote.

Walz will deliver remarks in Boston on Wednesday after a morning stop in Denver, Colorado, and ahead of events scheduled for Thursday in Newport, Rhode Island, and South Hampton, New York. Excepting the first event in California on Tuesday, each stop is billed as a “Harris-Walz campaign reception” with no precise start time or location provided.

According to the State House News Service, the Boston event will be hosted by Former U.S. Ambassador Alan Solomont and his wife, philanthropist Susan Solomont, at an unnamed Back Bay hotel. Attendees will need to cough up $25,000 to get in the door, with a suggest donation of $100,000.

The tour, according to the campaign, will allow the former high school teacher to connect with fellow union members and speak about his pro-worker record.

“Governor Walz, a former union member himself, has a strong record of standing up for unions and delivering for workers — from joining the picket line and passing the most pro-worker package of laws in Minnesota history, to guaranteeing Minnesota workers paid sick, medical, and family leave,” the campaign said.

Wednesday’s fundraiser in Boston, the campaign said, will not be open to the press or public but will be covered by “an editorial print pooler.”

But at this year’s summer games, there was one Olympian whose shocking loss inarguably had nothing to do with his mental fitness—and who still walked away as a legend. The 21-year-old French pole-vaulter Anthony Ammirati’s dreams were foiled on Saturday when the bulge of his crotch clipped the 5.70-meter crossbar, knocking him back to 12th place in the qualifying track-and-field heat. “It’s a big disappointment,” Ammirati told the French Athletics Federation . “I was 100 percent physically”—I’ll say— “but I was missing a bit of pole vault.” A bit? We’ve seen the videos . Don’t sell yourself short, man!

Every four years, when athletes emerge wearing the ludicrously skintight uniforms designated for their teams, we all do the polite thing and pretend we don’t notice the ways they grip, tug, or otherwise draw focus to the body parts underneath. In Paris, however, the noticing was unavoidable, because for all the skill of this year’s athletes, their penises kept getting in the way.

Take this year’s swimming teams, who all sported uniforms seemingly masterminded by Bob’s Burgers ’ Tina Belcher. If they weren’t flesh-colored, like Dutch swimmer Arno Kamminga’s , they were practically nonexistent. Or at least, not size-inclusive of the exceptional schlongs sported by athletes like Jules Bouyer. While the 22-year-old French diver’s package didn’t prevent him from coming fifth in the men's synchronized 3-meter springboard event, it certainly pulled focus when he attempted to adjust himself beforehand. He quickly went viral for wearing the Speedo equivalent of Simon Cowell’s shirts, and not, as he probably would have preferred, his talent in the pool.

"If some people find it amusing to look at my pants, that's their problem,” he told Reuters . “It amused me. That said, we mustn't forget that it can take the athlete out of his bubble and that it can hurt.”

This, ultimately, is the crux of the matter. While viral moments are all well and good, these penises have been actively sabotaging their owners. Instead of casting blame on people who have eyes, perhaps we should cast it upon limitations of our men’s athletic apparel. Why don’t men have sports bras for their junk?

As a cis woman, I can’t claim to know what it’s like to live with a penis, but the word that comes to mind is cumbersome. I can barely walk down a set of stairs without an athletic bra, let alone compete in any kind of sport unaided. But while women were quick to engineer a form of support for their protuberances, men are rawdogging their physical activity—and sometimes, having their dreams (and even testicles) crushed in the process.

“When your sport is all about getting your body over a bar and it’s a matter of millimeters!” tweeted Rennae Stubbs, ESPN commentator and Serena Williams’s former tennis coach. “My man! Call a drag queen! She’ll teach u how to tuck it!”

One such drag queen, the former Ru Paul’s Drag Race contestant Trinity the Tuck, actually offers an official tucking tutorial . When reached over email, she offers to assist Ammirati. “As someone with the same parts that hinder my job as well I can definitely give him a lesson or two,” she writes. “Anthony, feel free to DM me for a one-on-one class! I can help you make sure your pole is prepared for your vaulting!”

Robyn Withawhy, a London-based drag queen, has a simple five-step process that she describes as, “Balls up, sausage roll, wrap the burrito, X marks the spot and down under.” But when it comes to Ammirati, she says, “We've all seen the video, and I'm not sure any amount of tucking tape could have tamed that, ahem … pole.”

While athletic cups, commonly used in contact sports like football and hockey, protect a penis from contact with other people, there’s no mainstream male garment that protects one’s manhood from itself . Had Ammirati been better prepared, his legacy may have been shielded too.

Debby Is Expected to Bring Historic Rain to the Southeast. Here’s How Much.

The National Weather Service has issued strong warnings for Georgia and South Carolina.

Tropical Storm Debby, which came ashore as a Category 1 hurricane along the Florida coast early Monday, will move across the Southeast on Tuesday at roughly the speed of a human walking. That slow pace will allow it to deliver historic amounts of rainfall — most likely measured in feet instead of inches — that could lead to catastrophic flooding over the next several days.

Forecast risk of excessive rain for Tuesday

Alex Lamers, a meteorologist with the Weather Prediction Center, said this slow pace is a hallmark of the most significant and damaging tropical cyclone rainmakers.

Debby’s meandering forecast path across the Southeast for the next several days is likely to be eerily similar to that of Hurricane Harvey, which flooded the Houston Metro area in August 2017, and Hurricane Florence, which drenched North Carolina for days in 2018. Like Debby, both storms stalled over the region and became reminders that a hurricane’s hazards can persist and intensify for days after it makes landfall.

The old cities of Savannah, Ga., and Charleston, S.C. — which have both seen their fair share of tropical storms and where flooding has become more frequent recently — will likely see the brunt of this storm. “Charleston is particularly vulnerable to flooding because it’s shaped sort of like a bowl with very poor drainage,” said Erica Grow Cei, a meteorologist with the Weather Prediction Center.

Precipitation intensity

Forecasters believe Debby will rival or break rainfall records in Georgia (set by Alberto in 1994 with 27.85 inches) and South Carolina (set by Florence in 2018 with 23.63 inches) for the most rain that has ever fallen in each state. The forecast calls for widespread rainfall of 10 to 20 inches and, in some areas, upward of 25 inches.

The areas most likely to be hit hardest by the rain will be determined by the precise track of the storm’s center, which was still uncertain early Tuesday. Even small changes in the steering currents could result in Debby shifting and changing where the rain falls.

Because of this, an expansive and rare warning of a high risk for excessive rain has been issued in the region for today and tomorrow by the Weather Prediction Center forecasters who specialize in heavy rainfall events. Over the years, when this group has issued this type of high-risk forecast, the storms within the area the forecasters outlined have typically created damaging and often deadly flooding, said Zack Taylor, a meteorologist with the prediction center.

Debby is expected to move gingerly near the South Carolina coast on Tuesday and Wednesday. The storm will most likely move slightly offshore, allowing some restrengthening before the storm turns north and moves back inland.

Debby’s effects will also be felt in the North.

While the worst of the rainfall will be in the South over the next couple of days, hundreds of miles north, flash flooding will also be possible because of the storm’s circulation, from Baltimore northeast up the I-95 corridor to the Boston metro area, in what is called a predecessor rainfall event. These typically occur north of the central circulation and are separate from the main area of precipitation.

Debby will funnel huge amounts of moisture northward and collide with cooler air moving into the region, allowing storms to form. Storms will likely repeat over the same area, like train cars on a track, bringing at least two to four inches of rain in an urbanized area, likely leading to some cases of flash flooding.
