13 of the Best Small Travel Trailers on the Market

Published on November 23rd, 2019 by Brian Newman

Life is full of limits, which is why the RV lifestyle is so appealing. It allows people from all walks of life to travel and explore. Just take a look at the parking lot of the Grand Canyon. You’ll see RVs of every type, length, weight, and manufacturer from every corner of the country. Many RV consumers have a desire to keep their more fuel-efficient vehicles, yet they still want a travel trailer that has all the amenities needed to take week-long trips. New construction materials are making RVs lighter, stronger, and more versatile. Features that exist in 30 plus foot coaches are now seen in trailers as small as 15 feet or less – small travel trailers.

The small RV category is unique unto itself. Big-name manufacturers compete with independent small companies. Many of the small companies create new technologies the big names haven’t even thought of yet. For our discussion, we will define small travel trailers by the following criteria:

  • They are self-contained- this means that all features are within the coach itself. Trailers that only have outdoor kitchens fall within another category.
  • The coach does not have an interior length of more than 23 feet in length. They may be a part of a series that have floorplans that exceed this length, but we will define this.
  • Dry weights will not exceed 3,500 pounds. We will focus our attention on those that are the lightest in weight. Some do go as high as 4,000, but this is an effect of materials used. Some of the trailers are a part of a series that extend out of the small travel trailer parameters. We will feature those models that fall within our small trailer limits.

Here are the 13 Best Small Travel Trailers on the Market

1. jayco hummingbird.

  • 12.11- 19.8 feet in length
  • 1,570- 3,095 pounds dry weight
  • 5 different floorplans
  • Sleep up to 4 people
  • $13,496- $27,290 MSRP

Jayco’s quality manufacturing is a benchmark in the industry. The Hummingbird line is a great introduction to the small and compact category. Each floorplan gives great examples of small trailer features. Yet their self-contained models also have full feature amenities as well.

The 17MBS is 19.9 feet in length and has a 3,095-pound dry weight. The front has a murphy bed that shares space with a sofa. This is a feature that many manufacturers use as a space saver. As a trade-off, Jayco gives you a separate toilet and shower instead of a combined wet bath for an amenity balance.

This particular coach is an off-road model with 15 inch Goodyear mud tires and a raised chassis. They seal the underbelly with a layer of Astro-Foil to protect it and as an insulator. Despite its size, there is still plenty of space for linens, wardrobe, and pantry items within.

The 17RK is the exact length and dry weight of the 17MBS but is very different. The front of the coach has a permanent queen-size bed. It has a driver-side slide out that with a U-shaped dinette and refrigerator/microwave. The kitchen counter takes up the entire width of the rear. The tradeoff is a combination wet bath.

As you can see, Jayco does a lot with the space. Even their compact trailer has its advantages. If you are looking to get into the small travel trailer RV lifestyle, Jayco is a great place to start.

2. Casita Travel Trailers

  • 16-17 feet in length
  • 1,970- 2,480 pounds dry weight
  • 5 different floorplans/models
  • Sleep up to 6 people
  • $17,225- $20,289

Casita is a family-owned business that started in 1983. Their coaches have many configurations you can choose from. Their products can travel off-road and off-season with enough room to fit everyone.

Casita designs their trailers based on two sizes. Their two-piece fiberglass shells come in either 16 feet or 17 feet. Each size then has a standard or deluxe package. The deluxe models offer an all-in-one toilet/shower wet bath and black water holding tank.

Standard packages use the wet bath area for added storage or sitting/sleeping space. This allows for more people to be comfortable. It also means you would have to rely on campground facilities for restrooms and showers. If your camping style is more off-grid, the deluxe package may fit your needs better.

Casita matches a floorplan with a model. This means that if you want the two- twin bed floorplan, you would choose the Independence model. Whichever model you choose, weight and pricing are the same. The manufacturer sets the price of their products.

  • The 16-foot standard dry weight is 1,970 pounds and is $17,225.
  • The 16-foot deluxe dry weight is 2,185 pounds and is $19,279.
  • The 17-foot standard dry weight is 2,210 pounds and is $18,320.
  • The 17-foot deluxe dry weight is 2,480 pounds and is $20,289.

3. Scamp Trailers

  • 13 to 16 feet in length
  • 1,200- 2,000 pounds dry weight
  • 7 different floorplans
  • Between $15,000- $20,000

The Scamp Travel Trailer – the iconic small travel trailers – has been a Minnesota manufacturer since 1972. Instead of mass production, each coach is built to the customer’s specifications. They can choose the size, layout, and interior features they want.

According to some owners, the building time took a matter of a few weeks. What they enjoyed the most out of the experience was the interactive experience. The manufacturer sent pictures and answered questions during the whole process.

Once completed, customers pick up their unit at Scamp’s headquarters in Backus, Minnesota. If the customer can’t get there, Scamp will go the extra mile to help their customers out. The company can deliver the RV to the customer anywhere in the continental United States.

Scamp has three sizes. The 13 and 16-foot models are small travel trailers, and the 19 is a fifth wheel . Each size has a standard and deluxe version. The 13 foot has two layouts, while the 16 foot has five. Some models have a combination toilet/shower wet baths, others do not.

Costs are unique to each trailer. Scamp does not publish their starting prices. Some owners have discussed their pricing on forums across the internet. Generally, these price points have come in between $15,000 to $20,000 depending on the model, package, and additional features they have chosen.

The 13-foot standard layouts give you either a sofa or a dinette upfront. The first layout gives you a sofa that can convert into a bunk bed. The second layout replaces the sofa for a wet bath and a second closet. In the deluxe version, the choice is between a dinette or a wet bath.

The features that stay constant are the rear dinettes that fold out to make the master bedroom. They also come with full kitchens that include sinks and small refrigerators.

Standard models offer a more basic approach to camping. Kitchens have a 1.9 cubic foot refrigerator as a part of additional packages. Many electronic features like TV hookups are optional. Customers that want to choose individual amenities may decide on these models.

Deluxe models have more of a complete package offering than the standard models. Bigger features and amenities are available. Many electronics like TV hookups, air conditioners, vinyl flooring, and other high-end features can be added.

4. Airstream Bambi

  • 16 to 22 feet in length
  • 3,000- 4,000 pounds dry weight
  • 4 different floorplans
  • Sleeps up to 4 people
  • $49,000 to $58,000

With the retirement of the Sport, Airstream further developed their Bambi series. This small coach gave the company the ability to join in on the small travel trailers market. It also stays within the weight capacities small coach campers are looking for.

It comes in a 16, 19, 20, and 22-foot floor plan. Each one has a fixed double bed, dinette, full kitchen, and bathroom. The 16-foot model has a combined wet bath, but the others have full bathrooms. Each dinette folds down to allow an additional two sleepers.

The Bambi is spacious for its size. Airstream uses light colors in the coach to keep the interior bright and enhance the open feel. They also keep to their European styling to give the unit a sophisticated look.

As expected, Airstream uses only the best when it comes to its amenities. The bed has a memory foam mattress. The entertainment system uses JBL sound equipment and an LED TV. There are also USB ports and LED lights throughout the RV itself.

Each coach has an optional solar panel system that can be factory installed. Otherwise, each one comes prewired for external solar panel setups.

5. KZ RV Escape

  • 18.10- 27.3 feet in length
  • 2,690- 3,820 pounds dry weight
  • 11 different floorplans
  • Sleep up to 10 people
  • $11,995- $29,300

The KZ Escape series is the most versatile series on our list. Within the 11 floorplans, seven of them fit into our definition of small travel trailers. Among them, there are hybrids, slideouts, and even a toy hauler that measure within 22 feet or less.

KZ designs this series with everybody in mind. Their one of the models caters to the off-road enthusiast. The E191BH sits higher and comes with 15-inch mud tires. It also has electronic-controlled heated holding tanks that help with off-season camping.

The E171MB has a unique storage feature. On the slide-out that holds the refrigerator is a storage space that has both an inside and outside access. It also has a queen-size murphy bed that shares its space with a sofa. The coach has a full bathroom and kitchen that completes the interior space.

The E171 MB is 19.8 feet in length and has a dry weight of 3,170 pounds. Your midsize-SUV won’t have any problems towing this coach.

6. Little Guy Travel Trailers

  • 17.2- 21.0 feet in length
  • 1,993- 3,140 pounds dry weight
  • 17 different floorplans
  • Sleep up to 3 people
  • $20,000- $30,000

Little Guy Trailer Company has reinvigorated the teardrop trailer for the 21st century. This RV maker has created a self-contained teardrop with modern conveniences. They keep with the tradition of the teardrop by keeping tow weights at car towing capacities.

Little Guy Mini Max is light enough to use your car/SUV crossover, yet gives you features of a full-size RV. The bright maple hardwood cabinetry contains a full kitchen. This also includes a category-leading four cubic foot fridge. Many RVs of this size don’t have refrigerators this large.

The Little Guy Max is four feet long and weighs in a little under 2,000 pounds. Many 21-foot trailers weigh more than this. One of the great features of this coach is the ability to hook up your small SUV as your tow vehicle.

The versatility of the dinette is quite special. Most fold down to a double bed. This one gives you the option of either two twin beds or a queen-size configuration. This works by having the dinette on a hydraulic and sliding bed slats that support the middle of the bed.

A lot of thought went into the wet bath of these coaches. Toilet paper covers are waterproof. The shower uses 2.2 gallons a minute to conserve water. The space allows a person to move around without knocking into the toilet while cleaning off.

RV Pro Magazine rated the Little Guy Max Best in Show for 2018 at the RVIA National RV Trade Show. The RV maker won for its nostalgic styling, modern features, and amount of storage for its size.

7. Forest River R-Pod

  • 18.4- 22.2 feet in length
  • 2,497- 3,600 pounds dry weight
  • 15 different floorplans
  • $14,500- $30,000

The Forest River R-Pod is celebrating its 10th year in production. Many of the features and amenities on this RV borrow from its big brothers and sisters. With 15 different floorplans to choose from, there is an R-Pod for everyone in this small category.

The 10th-anniversary package comes with many upgraded standard features. Furrion sound systems, solar charging ports, and seamless kitchen countertops are some. Other popular features include a pet-friendly frame-mounted utility hook for your dog.

Most of the floorplans have permanent queen-size beds. Other sleeping spaces include fold-down dinettes, bunk beds, and murphy beds. The R-Pod is a master of the ability to make the most of the space in its coach. This is why it has been so popular for so long.

Popular add-ons include a solar panel system with a 110-watt panel and a 1,000-watt inverter. Some models can have a factory built-in outdoor kitchen added as well. The R-Pod has a screen room that attaches to your awning to complete your outdoor space.

8. Homegrown Trailers- Timberline

  • 18.10 feet in length
  • 4,150- 4,350 pounds dry weight
  • Sleep up to 5 people
  • $50,000- $57,500

When tent camping does not work out for the whole family, most get into the RV lifestyle. The founder of Homegrown Trailers took that a step further. He and his team built a trailer out of sustainable materials in Kirkland, Washington.

The Timberline is an 18.10-foot travel trailer that uses green materials in its construction. Both the interior and exterior are made from wood paneling. Wool insulation creates a strong barrier against the outdoor temperatures.

The off-grid package has a 600-800 solar panel wattage to power all the electronic needs of the coach. The wet bath area gives you the option of a clean or composting toilet. For easy access, the grey water tank is external and simple to drain.

Everything about this coach is green and sustainable. They did not forget about styling and comfort. The aerodynamic shape is teardrop inspired to cut down on wind resistance. There is plenty of headroom and floorspace to allow up to five people to move around.

The coach has plenty of modern conveniences too. A full kitchen with a refrigerator allows meal preparation. Heat and air conditioning units are optional add-ons as well.

9. Oliver Travel Trailers

  • 18.5- 23.6 feet in length
  • 3,400- 4,600 pounds dry weight
  • 6 different floorplans
  • $48,900- $55,900

When you buy an Oliver Travel Trailer (a.k.a. “Ollie”), you become a member of the club. Oliver sells its trailers factory direct. They only build them per customer order. Once built, buyers pick up their trailers at the factory in Hohenwald, Tennessee.

Currently, Ollie makes the Elite I and II. The Elite I has two floorplans, and Elite II has four. The main bed is either permanent or a fold-down dinette. The third sleeping space is either a twin bed or two-seater dinette that folds down.

Ollies come with many standard features that compete with many big names in the RV world. What makes Ollie so unique are the many add-ons that others don’t offer. One surprising option is dual awnings. One for the door side, and another for the opposite side of the coach.

They also offer thought-provoking ideas. Specialized materials that clear away moisture from condensation areas. External storage baskets and receivers for bike racks. Propane water heaters and various electronic signal boosters. There are many other optional add-ons worth exploring.

Once a customer has worked with their sales representative, the order goes to the factory. Production time can take 8 to 10 weeks to build your RV. Once it’s ready, the customer comes to the factory and spends their first night in their new coach.

The buying process is as unique as the trailer itself.

10. Lance Trailer

  • 14- 25 feet in length
  • 2,600-5,875 pounds dry weight
  • 12 different floorplans
  • Sleep up to 7 people
  • $27,500- $66,400

Of the many big names that need mention, Lance is the unexpected winner. Their lineup offers nine models that are 22 feet or less in length. Only three of them have a dry weight under 4,000 pounds. They may be heavy, but their design is extraordinary.

In fact, one of their models, the Lance 2075 is the Best in Show award winner with RV Pro Magazine for 2020 . This model won due to its best technique of separating the bedroom area from the living room space. It has a queen-size bed in front and a U-shaped dinette in the rear that is on a slide-out.

The lightest model makes the best use of its 14 feet of interior space. It has a front sofa that folds out to a double bed. The rear has a full bathroom instead of a wet bath. It also includes a full kitchen.

Instead of trying to squeeze in a dinette, the designers placed two padded chairs with a small table. This allows the RVers to sit and relax in front of a big picture window. No matter how it’s used, there is still a feeling of spaciousness and relaxation.

If you look at Lance’s line up, all the models they have a focus on one point. Their small travel trailers give their users the most use of open space. The company wants its customers to have a relaxing experience, no matter the length of the RV.

11. Happier Camper

  • 10 feet in length
  • 1,100 pounds dry weight
  • Numerous different floorplans
  • $24,950 starting price

Have you ever looked around your RV and said to yourself, “I wish I had…?” If you owned an HC1 from Happier Camper, your response might be, “I have a box for that.”

This Los Angeles, California company has taken modular camping to the next level. The basis of the coach’s interior starts with 20-inch x 20-inch plastic boxes. Some are for storage. Others are more complicated. One can be the deluxe kitchen with pull out fridge, stove, and sink. Another could hold the wooden countertops for tables.

To configure the things you need, you place and stack the boxes according to what you need at the time. If you need to use the kitchen and dinette, you place the kitchen setup on top of storage boxes. The tabletop fits into the position between the seating.

At night, you place all the boxes on the same level and the sleeping pad over them. This gives you enough sleeping space for up to five people at night. With the large windows on three of the walls, there is plenty of cross breeze at night to keep things cool.

To add to the appeal, the designers gave their trailer a classic 1950’s nostalgic appeal. It comes in seven different colors you can choose from.

Additional options include a loading ramp to help you load your dirt bikes and other toys. A 100-watt solar panel and inverter. An elevated frame with off-road tires. To add space, they have a screen room that connects to the tailgate. You can also get a dry flush toilet.

With this weight and design, almost any vehicle can tow it. The honeycomb base and dual fiberglass shell are strong enough to hold anything. The Adaptiv components come in packages that add weight. With the components, you should assume around 2,000 pounds fully loaded.

12. inTech RV Sol

  • 16- 19 feet in length
  • 2,590- 3,375 pounds dry weight
  • 3 different floorplans
  • $24,890- $35,000

When most people think of small travel trailers, luxury isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. The designers at inTech have changed that type of thinking. Their line of Sol trailers has combined luxury, unique style, and small size in new ways.

The first thing you notice is the shape of their trailers. The tilt-front shape adds space without sacrificing aerodynamics. In the Dawn model, the front panoramic windshield allows those at the dinette to enjoy the view. The Eclipse places the kitchen upfront. This gives plenty of natural light while preparing meals.

The luxury-style amenities, regardless of model, give a high-class feel to the RV. The kitchen area has stainless steel amenities that include a 3.7 cubic foot refrigerator. The flooring is a woven vinyl that is a perfect combination of style and resilience to dirt and stains.

The dinettes in both models fold out into the bed in these coaches. In the Dawn, the measurements are 48 x 80. The Eclipse is 55 x 80. When you compare these to residential beds, you get the length of a queen.

The wet baths are very large in both models. Whichever model you choose, you will receive a real porcelain toilet. inTech made sure to give you plenty of room to take a standing shower and not feel claustrophobic. Their wet baths are the largest in their class.

13. Hymer Touring GT

  • 18.11 feet in length
  • 2,500 pounds dry weight
  • 1 American floorplan, 11 German floorplans
  • Sleeps up to 3 people
  • $18,995- $20,995

The appeal of European design has become a new trend in the United State in recent years. This has given consumers new form and function options. In the Class B motorhome category, European-based chassis have benefits never seen before.

Eriba RV decided to take this a step further. This past year, they decided to open a North American Division here in the United States. This German company introduced its Hymer Touring GT to America. While it may be new to the U.S., this coach dates back to the late 1950s.

The first unique feature of this coach is its expandable roof. Once opened, it gives almost a 6.4 feet height within the coach.

The current layout available in the United States has a king-size bed in the rear of the coach. This is unique since it’s truly rare for small travel trailers to have a permanent bed of this size. The front of the coach has a fold-down dinette that can accommodate an additional sleeper.

The cabinetry follows European style with its rounded fronts. This gives additional inches to each storage space. The faucet folds down into the sink and has a cover that folds on top of it. The two-burner gas stove also has a cover. This allows the added counter space for meal prep.

The bathroom is full-featured. It comes with a cassette toilet that has it’s own external bay for easy draining. The shower is big enough to clean up without banging your arms against the walls.

Another unique feature is their window and door screens. For the door, there is a hidden screen that pulls out from the side. Pull-down sunscreens and privacy shades act as screens as well. When you open the windows, the hatches act as hard-shell awnings to prevent rain and other weather from coming into the coach.

The 14 Best Small Travel Trailers

smallest travel rv

Even though more people than ever before are hitting the open road and experiencing the exhilaration of overlanding, not everyone has the financial means to purchase a recreational vehicle, an Airstream Classic, or a rig that was built specifically for them. A solo weekend excursion may be enough to satiate the need for adventure in some people (even if it results in new levels of wanderlust).

Small travel trailers are an excellent choice for individuals who yearn for the thrill of exploration but do not have the resources or the space necessary to maintain the typical large vehicle associated with a bigger travel trailer.

If you’ve always had the urge to hit the open road and see the world, purchasing a small travel trailer might be the best option for you. You can attach one of these compact trailers to the back of your car and travel with all of the comforts of home.

But how do you determine which of the numerous available choices is most suitable for you? This article will examine the best compact travel trailers that are currently available on the market and provide helpful guidance for selecting the travel trailer that is best suited to meet your requirements. When you look at these mobile homes, you won’t be able to help but daydream about hitting the open road for a cross-country adventure or a quick weekend getaway.

The class of vehicles known as small travel trailers has its own distinct personality. Large corporations compete alongside newer, more nimble businesses. We will use the following definition of compact travel trailers for the purposes of this discussion:

Mini-campers are available at a reasonable price, with many models retailing for less than $10,000. On the other hand, the price will be significantly higher if there are any conveniences (like a bathroom) present. On the other hand, given their diminutive size and low weight, they are remarkably simple to manipulate. In addition, the overwhelming majority can be transported using a standard automobile.

In this article, we will be focusing on lightweight camping trailers that have a GVWR of less than 3,550 pounds and a length of less than 23 feet. These are the types of trailers that can be easily towed by a midsize truck or SUV (and in some cases, even a regular sedan) to fit in an average-sized garage.

  • weighing 1,200 to 2,000 pounds dry
  • 7 distinct floor plans
  • Up to four people can be accommodated
  • $15,000 to $20,000

Since 1972, Minnesota has produced the iconic Scamp Travel Trailer. Instead of mass production, each coach is built to the customer’s specifications. They can select the size, layout, and interior features that they want.

According to some owners, the construction took only a few weeks. The interactive aspect of the experience was what they enjoyed the most. Throughout the process, the manufacturer sent pictures and responded to questions.

Customers can pick up their finished unit at Scamp’s headquarters in Backus, Minnesota. If a customer is unable to arrive, Scamp will go above and beyond to assist them. The RV can be delivered to the customer anywhere in the continental United States.

Scamp comes in three different sizes. The 13- and 16-foot models are small travel trailers, while the 19 is a fifth wheel. Each size has a standard version and a deluxe version. The 13-footer has two layouts, while the 16-footer has five. Some models have combined toilet and shower wet baths, while others do not.

Each trailer has its own set of costs. Scamp does not publish its starting prices. Some owners have discussed their pricing on internet forums. These prices have generally ranged from $15,000 to $20,000, depending on the model, package, and additional features selected.

The 13-foot standard layouts include either a sofa or a dinette up front. The first layout includes a sofa that can be converted into a bunk bed. The second layout swaps out the sofa for a wet bath and a second closet. In the deluxe version, you can choose between a dinette and a wet bath.

The rear dinettes that fold out to form the master bedroom remain constant. They also have full kitchens with sinks and small refrigerators.

Standard models provide a more basic approach to camping. Additional packages include a 1.9 cubic foot refrigerator in kitchens. Many electronic features, such as TV hookups, are optional. Customers who want to customize their amenities can choose from these models.

Deluxe models have a more comprehensive package offering than standard models. Larger features and amenities are available. Many electronics, such as TV hookups, air conditioners, vinyl flooring, and other high-end features, can be added.

KZ created this series with everyone in mind. One of their models is aimed at off-road enthusiasts. The E191BH is taller and has 15-inch mud tires. It also has heated holding tanks that are electronically controlled, which is useful for off-season camping.

The E171MB has a one-of-a-kind storage feature. A storage space with both inside and outside access is located on the slide-out that houses the refrigerator. There is also a queen-size Murphy bed that shares space with a sofa. A full kitchen and bathroom complete the interior of the coach.

Little Guy Travel Trailers

  • 1,993 to 3,140 pounds dry weight
  • There are 17 different floor plans to choose from
  • Sleeps up to three people
  • $20,000- $30,000

The teardrop trailer was given new life by Little Guy Trailer Company, which brought it into the modern era. This RV manufacturer has introduced a fully functional teardrop with all the latest amenities. They honor the teardrop’s heritage by adhering to the maximum weight that a car can tow.

The Little Guy Mini Max is a lightweight RV that still has all the amenities of a larger model. A complete kitchen is hidden within the light maple hardwood cabinetry. A top-of-the-line four-cubic-foot refrigerator is included. A refrigerator of this size is unusual in RVs of this size.

Max the Small Guy is only four feet in length and weighs around 1,900 kilograms. Many 21-foot trailers exceed this weight. The ability to use a compact SUV as a tow vehicle is a great feature of this coach.

The dinette’s adaptability is one of its best features. Usually, they can be transformed into a double bed. This one can be set up with either two twin beds or one queen bed, depending on your preference. Hydraulics support the dinette as it slides along the bed’s slats to create a flat surface in the middle.

These coaches’ soaking showers were designed with care. Toilet paper wrappers are impervious to water. The water-saving shower uses only 2.20 gallons per minute. This roomy bathroom ensures that no one will accidentally brush up against the toilet while getting cleaned up.

The Little Guy Max was named Best in Show at the RVIA National RV Trade Show by RV Pro Magazine in 2018. The winning RV manufacturer had a throwback look but also included cutting-edge amenities and plenty of space.

Permanent queen-size beds are standard in most room layouts. Dinettes that fold out into beds, bunk beds, and murphy beds are some of the additional sleeping options. The R-coach Pod’s is renowned for its innovative use of space. That’s why it’s lasted so long at the top of the charts.

A solar panel system consisting of a 110-watt panel and a 1,000-watt inverter is a popular upgrade. A fully functional outdoor kitchen can be added to some models right from the factory. If you want to make the most of your outdoor space, the R-Pod comes with a screen room that can be attached to your awning.

Only upon specific request do they create them. Trailers are manufactured in Hohenwald, Tennessee, and customers can pick them up there once they are finished.

Ollie currently produces Elite I and II. The Elite I has two layout options, while the Elite II offers four. There is either a fixed main bed or a dinette that converts into a bed. The third sleeping area can be a twin bed or a fold-down dinette for two.

Many of the amenities found in other popular RV brands are included in the price of an Ollie. Ollie stands out from the competition thanks to its many extra features. In addition, they provide food for thought. Condensation-fighting materials are made of specialized materials. Bicycle rack attachment points and outside storage baskets. Heating systems that use propane and electronic amplifiers for weak signals. There are a plethora of extras that can be purchased if desired.

Why Choose a Small Travel Trailer?

When it comes to travel trailers, there are endless sizes and models available on the market. However, small travel trailers have become increasingly popular in recent years for a variety of reasons.

Small travel trailers offer flexibility and freedom while traveling. Most vehicles can tow them without the need for a large truck or SUV. This means you can explore more remote areas that may not be accessible with larger RVs.

Small travel trailers tend to be more affordable than their larger counterparts. Not only is the initial purchase price lower but so are the ongoing costs, such as maintenance and fuel expenses.

Another advantage of choosing a small travel trailer is its compact size, which makes storage much easier when not in use. You won’t need an extra-large garage or storage unit to keep your trailer safe from damage during off-season months.

These smaller units often come with creative floor plans that maximize space efficiency, making them perfect for couples or families with one child seeking adventure on the road without sacrificing comfort and convenience.

There are many advantages to owning a small travel trailer for those who value flexibility, affordability, and unique design features while exploring different destinations across North America!

What to Look for When Buying a Small Travel Trailer

  • They are considered “self-contained” because everything you need is present in the trailer itself. There’s also a subset of trailers that are equipped only with outdoor kitchens.
  • There’s a cap of 23 feet on the enclosed trailer’s length. Even if it’s part of a line that also includes larger trailers, a travel trailer is still considered “small” if it’s shorter than 23 feet in length.
  • The maximum allowable dry weight is 3,500 pounds. The lightest trailers will be given priority. Due to their construction, some small campers can reach altitudes of 4,000 meters. Some of the trailers are too large or cumbersome to be considered “small travel trailers,” so keep that in mind. Below, we’ve highlighted the models that are too big to fit in our trailer.

How to Choose the Right Small Travel Trailer for You

When it comes to choosing the right small travel trailer, there are a few key factors to consider. First and foremost, think about your specific needs and preferences. Are you a solo traveler or do you have a family? How much storage space do you require? Do you prefer a compact design or something more spacious?

Next, consider the towing capacity of your vehicle. You’ll want to make sure that the small travel trailer you choose is compatible with your car or truck. Check the weight limits and ensure that your vehicle can handle it safely.

Another important aspect to think about is the layout and features of the trailer. Consider how many sleeping areas you need, as well as amenities such as kitchen facilities, bathroom options, and entertainment systems.

In addition to functionality, aesthetics also play a role in choosing the right small travel trailer for you. Look for designs and color schemes that resonate with your personal style and taste.

Don’t forget about budget considerations. Small travel trailers come in various price ranges, so determine how much you’re willing to invest in this adventure on wheels.

By taking all of these factors into account – your needs, towing capacity, layout preferences, aesthetics, and budget – you’ll be able to narrow down your options and find the perfect small travel trailer for an unforgettable journey ahead!

The Benefits of Small Camping Trailers

Small camping trailers offer a multitude of benefits that make them an attractive option for travelers. One of their main advantages is their compact size, which allows for easy maneuverability and flexibility on the road. With a small travel trailer, you can navigate narrow roads, fit into tight campsites, and even park in residential areas without much hassle. Another benefit of these trailers is their affordability. Small travel trailers are generally more budget-friendly compared to larger RVs or motorhomes. They require less fuel to tow and have lower maintenance costs. This makes them an ideal choice for those who want to explore the world on a limited budget. Additionally, small camping trailers offer convenience and comfort. Despite their size, they are equipped with essential amenities such as sleeping quarters, a kitchenette, storage space, and bathroom facilities (in some cases). These features ensure that you have everything you need while traveling without sacrificing comfort. Furthermore, small travel trailers encourage a minimalist lifestyle. Their limited space forces travelers to prioritize what they truly need for their journey and eliminate unnecessary clutter from their lives. This can lead to a more simplified way of living and promote mindfulness about consumption habits. Lastly but importantly, small camping trailers allow travelers to immerse themselves in nature. They provide opportunities for off-the-grid adventures where breathtaking landscapes become your backyard every day. Whether it’s exploring national parks or campgrounds off the beaten path, these compact trailers allow you to get closer to nature and experience its wonders firsthand. In conclusion: Small camping trailers offer numerous benefits, including maneuverability on the road; affordability; convenience; encouraging minimalism; and immersing travelers in nature’s beauty

The Drawbacks of Small Travel Trailers

When it comes to small travel trailers, there are certainly many advantages. However, it’s important to consider the drawbacks as well before making a decision. One of the main drawbacks of small travel trailers is their limited space. While they are perfect for solo travelers or couples, families may find them too cramped. This means less storage space for belongings and limited living space inside the trailer. Another drawback is that smaller trailers often have fewer amenities compared to larger ones. This could mean sacrificing certain luxuries, such as a full-size kitchen or bathroom facilities. It’s important to prioritize what features are essential for your travel experience. Small travel trailers also tend to have less stability on the road compared to larger ones. They can be more prone to swaying in windy conditions or when passing large vehicles. This may require careful driving and adjustments while on the road. Additionally, if you enjoy entertaining guests or having extra sleeping accommodations, a small trailer may not be suitable. These trailers typically have limited seating areas and only enough sleeping space for a couple or small family. Resale value can be another drawback of small travel trailers. As they are initially more affordable than larger models, their value tends to depreciate faster over time.

While these drawbacks should be considered when choosing a small travel trailer, they may not outweigh the benefits depending on your specific needs and preferences.

Small travel trailers offer numerous benefits for travelers who prefer a compact and efficient camping experience. They are easy to tow and maneuver, making them ideal for both novice and experienced campers. These trailers also provide a cozy and comfortable living space while allowing you to connect with nature.

In this article, we have explored the world of small travel trailers and highlighted some of the best options available. When it comes to choosing the right small travel trailer for your adventures, it’s important to consider factors such as size, amenities, weight capacity, and budget.

However, it’s essential to acknowledge that there are also drawbacks associated with small travel trailers. Limited space can be challenging if you’re traveling with a large group or carrying bulky equipment. Additionally, some smaller models may lack certain amenities or features found in larger RVs.

The decision on whether to choose a small travel trailer depends on your personal preferences and needs. Consider how much space you require, what amenities are essential for your travels, and what type of towing vehicle you have at your disposal.

To make an informed choice about which small travel trailer is best suited for you, take the time to research different brands and models. Read reviews from fellow travelers who have firsthand experience with these trailers.

Remember that finding the perfect small travel trailer is all about striking a balance between comfort and functionality during your outdoor excursions without compromising or breaking the bank.

Table of Contents

But the good news is that there are smaller RVs that are not just more affordable, but you might be able to use a normal parking space for storage . Small RVs offer a lot of similar conveniences offered by a big ones but in more compact packaging. Need more convincing? Here’s what you need to know about small RVs and what models you should consider.

What Is a Small RV?

As mentioned, regular medium-sized RVs are typically about 25 feet long. If you are looking for a smaller one, a van-sized RV may be what you need as its lengths are usually less than 25 feet. You can get motorhomes that you can drive or you can choose smaller trailers that are just the right size.

These options are easier to manage on and off the road. They weigh less than regular RVs, so they are more driveable. They also take up less space, so you can keep them in your garage or fit them in a moderate parking spot.

Small RVs have become a more preferred option today. In fact, more and more drivers are picking small motorhomes over the past years. There is an increase in sales for Class B and Class C RVs, showing how people are taking a friendlier stance on tiny mobile living.

Now, if you are hesitant about getting a small RV because you are worried about limitations, then you will be pleased to know that these options have amenities similar to any regular RV.

In fact, many small motorhomes have every essential facility needed to help you survive the drive. With the right small RV, you will have sleeping quarters, a kitchen, a dining area, and in many cases a shower and toilet.

What’s the Smallest RV You Can Buy?

The thing about buying small RVs is that you can shop around for the best options. There are lots of tiny motorhomes and trailers out there and the key is finding the right one.

If you are looking for the smallest option, I would mention the teardrop campers which are your best bet if you are looking for shorter RVs.

The best part is that some of these tiny RVs have all the basic necessities and more to make your camping trip a wonderful experience.

What you need to remember is that just because you are choosing a small RV does not mean that you will be paying a small price. In fact, some options out there are priced more than regular houses. Why? Because they give you everything you need to be comfortable during your adventure in a compact and portable, yet functional package!

What Is the Smallest RV That Has a Bathroom?

Now, when people look for small RVs, what some neglect to remember is that not all of their options would have a bathroom complete with a shower. Here is my article about the smallest Class B RVs with shower and toilet.

This can be pretty annoying and unsatisfying because most people like to have the convenience of their own toilet and shower even if that is a wet bath. Of course, you can improvise by using a portable shower system, and a shower tent.

shower

If you want to avoid this, you will be glad to know that many campgrounds have facilities that campers can use. While this is a good thing for the unprepared, it can be a bit disappointed as they are bound to be substandard. Many campgrounds use quarters per minute of shower time.

Your best bet is to get an RV that caters to every single one of your needs. On the lookout for the tiniest options with a built-in restroom, shower, and heater?

Is a Small RV Worth It?

Given your options, you might be wondering if purchasing a small RV is worth your time and money. The short answer is yes, but only if you choose one that truly fits your needs.

Keep in mind that only you can make sure that your new tiny mobile home will be worth every penny. Remember, these vehicles or trailers can be quite pricey and you want to make sure that you get the best value for your money not only by choosing the best RV for you, but also by maximizing its usage.

If are still hesitating about this decision, you might want to see a list of advantages and disadvantages of getting a smaller RV. Check it out below.

smallest travel rv

Small camper RVs include motorhomes and travel trailers that are typically 30 feet or less in length and are towed behind a vehicle. They can include anything from ultra-lite teardrop options and pop-up campers to those that are larger.

A mid-size SUV or crossover can easily pull most small campers, although you should always use our RV tow guide to look up the towing capacity of your vehicle before you buy any travel trailer.

15 Best Small Campers for Sale

So, what is the best small camper? There is no single answer. The best small camper for you will depend on what specs and amenities you need.

Your ideal small camping trailer may not be the lightest or shortest one because you need specific features, such as a bathroom or kitchenette. In other cases, you may want something like a pop up camper for easy towing.

That said, here are our picks for the best small campers available at RV dealerships nationwide.

2023 Coleman Lantern LT 17R

The Coleman Lantern LT 17R is one of Coleman’s newest small campers for couples or small families. They replaced the bunkhouse design that was popular in the Lantern LT 17B with a small rear bathroom with a wardrobe closet for extra storage.

The convertible dinette provides sleeping space for small kids or a comfortable dining space during mealtime. Additionally, this simple-to-use camping trailer is a great option for new RVers, as it’s not overly complex to learn and use.

Coleman’s Rubicon 1200RK is one of the most compact camping trailers you’ll find. It’s just big enough to sleep two comfortably, but the electric fireplace keeps the interior surprisingly cozy on cooler nights.

The best feature of this small camper might just be its size. It’s one of the rare trailers that can fit inside most residential garages – with a height of 7 feet. That makes storing your RV and maintaining it in the offseason much easier.

Learn more about the 1200RK.

Learn about these brothers and their epic Pacific Northwest adventure in the 1200RK.

2023 Keystone Passport 221BH

Keystone’s Passport 221BH is on the larger end for a small camper, making it great for families with teens. The double-over-double bunks in the rear provide much more comfortable sleeping than standard twin bunks.

The main sleeping area features a queen-sized Murphy bed that converts to a 60” sofa during the day. And if you don’t bring the kids along, one of the bunks flips up to provide more storage space, which is conveniently accessible via the rear cargo door.

Popular Types of Small Campers

Below are popular types of small campers. The compact best small camper for you will depend on your budget, needs, and desired amenities.

Pop-Up Campers

Hard side pop up camper in Camping World dealership lot

Sometimes called “tent trailers” or “folding campers,” a pop-up camper is a compact trailer that’s easy to tow. Pop-up campers are an excellent fit for small families or couples who want to camp but aren’t interested in a tent. Most pop-up campers have a box-like structure, collapsible walls, and roofs that raise or lower with support poles.

Pop-up campers come in different sizes and amenities. They are typically equipped with a bathroom and kitchenette. Larger models may also have a dining area that can be converted into an extra sleeping space. Some will even have air conditioning and heating. What’s best for you will depend on your budget and how comfy you want to be while camping.

  • Easy to tow
  • Simple to set up
  • Limited space
  • Weather-dependent
  • Poor noise insulation

Teardrop Campers

NuCamp trailer in Camping World dealership lot

Teardrop campers have grown in popularity over the years because of their compact size and unique design. They’re an excellent option for people prioritizing mobility and cost-effectiveness over luxuries and spaciousness.

They’re a great fit for solo travelers on a budget or those with smaller vehicles. But for those who plan on extended trips, a larger option might make more sense.

Like any type of small camper, they have their own pros and cons:

  • Small and lightweight
  • Easy to tow and maneuver
  • Versatility for camping, tailgating, and more
  • Can comfortably fit two people
  • No bathroom or kitchen
  • Lack of storage
  • Not ideal for extreme temperatures

Lightweight Trailers

Lightweight camping trailer towed by SUV

Lightweight trailers straddle the middle ground between a teardrop camper and a full-sized travel trailer or RV. They’re often built with hard walls made of materials like fiberglass or aluminum. Set-up time is usually minimal: it typically requires unhitching the trailer from the towing vehicle and leveling before you open any doors or windows .

  • Sturdy camping option towable with most vehicles
  • Often offer basic amenities like beds, storage, and a kitchenette
  • Less expensive than traditional RVs
  • Limited space due to small size
  • Lack of insulation
  • Often lack bathrooms

Small Camper Bathrooms

If you’re in the market for a camper or camper trailer, you’ll need to decide if a bathroom is an absolute necessity. For those who plan on strictly visiting campgrounds with dedicated shower houses and bathrooms, it can be less of a requirement. But if your travel plans include truly “roughing it,” you may want to consider investing in a camper with a dedicated bathroom.

Wet Bath versus Dry Bath

RVs with wet baths have bathrooms that combine the sink, toilet, and shower in one space. Dry baths offer different areas for the sink, toilet, and shower. A wet bath is an all-in-one space where the entire room can get wet. A dry bath is like what you’d find at home.

Who Are Small Campers Best For?

Couple playing cards inside one of the best small campers

One of the best things about small campers is that they can be a great fit for several different types of people. They offer flexibility and convenience without sacrificing some of the most essential comforts, like cozy beds.

Buying a small camper or trailer might make sense if you’re one of the following types of people:

  • Solo travelers who want a cozy and comfortable living space
  • Couples who want basic amenities and a cozy space
  • Budget-conscious campers who don’t want or need the expense of a full-sized trailer or RV
  • Minimalists who want to travel light and keep things simple
  • Weekend warriors who take short camping trips over weekends
  • Outdoor adventurers who want to explore more remote areas but still have access to basic amenities

Not sure if a small camper makes more sense for your needs than something bigger? Research plenty of RV types with our comparison tools.

Pros and Cons of Small Campers

Need a quick recap of the pros and cons of small campers? Check out this list:

  • Easy towing and maneuverability: Small campers are typically easier to tow and maneuver than larger RVs or trailers, making them a good choice for those who are new to towing.
  • Affordability: Small campers are generally more affordable than larger vehicles, which can make them an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers. This is especially true with competitive RV financing .
  • Fuel efficiency: Because of their smaller size and weight, small campers often require less towing power and thus get better gas mileage than larger vehicles.
  • Convenience: Small campers offer a convenient way to travel and explore the outdoors without having to worry about setting up tents or finding accommodations .
  • Limited living space: One of the biggest downsides of small campers is that they offer limited living space, which may not be sufficient for some travelers.
  • Fewer amenities: Small campers typically have fewer features and amenities than larger RVs or trailers, which may make them less appealing to those who prefer more luxurious camping experiences .
  • Less storage space: Because of their smaller size, small campers often have less storage space than larger vehicles, which can make it challenging to bring along all the gear you need.

Finding The Best Small Camper Trailers: What You Need To Know

Benefits of small campers.

When it comes to RV living, bigger isn’t always better . Here are a few reasons why you might want to think small:

  • Weight —A smaller unit will be lighter and easier to tow
  • Maneuverability —You’ll have an easier time driving and parking than you would with an oversized rig
  • Flexibility—A small travel trailer will give you more freedom, in terms of both parking and sheer exploration
  • Cost —You’ll spend much less than you would on a larger model

A Word About The Features

Bear in mind that a smaller unit will probably be equipped with fewer standard features than a large-scale model. That doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice basic comfort, but you might be faced with some difficult choices.

Before you buy, think about which aspects of camper life are most important to you. If you do most of your cooking outside anyway, consider a unit with limited or nonexistent kitchen facilities.

Similarly, if you usually camp in RV parks that have well-maintained comfort stations, you might be willing to forgo the built-in bathroom. Solo travelers or couples can opt for units with close-knit sleeping quarters, especially if they’re of average height. You can use these criteria to narrow down your list, making your choice that much easier.

Scamp’s recognizable capsule-shaped trailer is available in three different sizes, 12, 16, or 19 feet. We’ve gone with the 16-footer for this review because it offers a decent amount of storage and living space while still falling into the “compact” category.

This unit is small enough to be towed by a mid-sized car and large enough to accommodate built-in bathroom facilities. Both the dinette and the couch can be converted into sleeping space, making it a decent option for families . If you prefer to buy American, Scamp prides itself on using only products that were made in the USA.

Airstream RV Sport 16 “Bambi”

This is another distinctive 16-foot model, distinguished by its sleek silver exterior. The construction is durable inside and out, and the layout is cozy and convenient, with both kitchen and wet bath included.

This is one of the pricier units listed here, but the quality goes a long way toward offsetting the sticker shock. Note that there are no separate tanks for gray water and wastewater, so the combination tank has a relatively high capacity, but needs to be cleaned and treated as you would a regular black water tank.

The Airstream Basecamp X is geared toward newbies who are planning to make the switch from tent camping to the RV lifestyle. To ease the transition, this model even comes with a tent attachment that expands the living space.

This is the model to consider if you don’t want the hassle of dealing with a large travel trailer, but still need a little extra room to spread out.

Since the Legacy Elite II is a four-season model, t’s also worth a look if you plan on taking your camper on the road year-round. An oversized refrigerator and 340-watt solar package make this the ideal option for frequent boondockers.

  • Length: 23 feet, 6 inches
  • Height: 8 feet, 6 inches
  • Dry Weight: 4900 pounds
  • Hitch Weight: 490 pounds
  • Black Water: 18.5 gallons

With its exterior wood paneling, this teardrop trailer is designed to help you blend right in with the great outdoors. Features like the 400-watt solar package and composting toilet add to the sustainability factor. While it’s a tad too long to be towed by a car, it’s suitable for most SUVs and crossovers. It can also be stored in a standard-sized garage.

  • Length: 19 feet, 4 inches
  • Height: 6 feet, 9 inches (top down)
  • Width: 7 feet, 5 inches
  • Dry Weight: 2850 pounds
  • Gray Water: N/A
  • Awning Size:

The LT series offers a number of unique floor plans, in addition to a bevy of extra goodies like tinted safety windows, interior speakers, and even a microwave.

The 14BH is also lightweight enough to be towed by a smaller vehicle. A set of bunk beds is tucked into a rear corner, doubling the available sleeping space and making this a suitable fit for families of four. The interior design isn’t fancy, but it’s functional and solidly built.

  • Length: 18 feet, 9 inches
  • Height: 9 feet
  • Dry Weight: 2782 pounds
  • Hitch Weight: 362 pounds
  • Fresh Water: 27 gallons
  • Gray Water: 28 gallons
  • Black Water: 28 gallons

The Verdict

As far as we’re concerned, you can’t go wrong with any of these travel trailers. Which one you choose depends largely upon your own personal circumstances.

That said, we’re big fans of the Aliner Ascape model. Because it’s so small and easy to maneuver, novices don’t need to be apprehensive about the towing experience.

It’s also ideal for adventurers who want to get off the highway and explore some of the hidden corners of the land. As long as you don’t mind dealing with the lack of a black water tank, the Ascape provides a superb camping experience.

Good luck, and happy camping!

Are All Small Travel Trailers The Same

Some people look for practicality in a small camper trailer, while others need some home comforts while traveling. To meet all demands, manufacturers have created a wide range of travel trailers while addressing the diverse demands of travelers and campers.

The smaller the travel trailer generally means the easier to tow, hence giving more control to its consumers. If you want to take your truck on different routes, then a smaller truck will play in your favor as it is easier to tow. Going for a little time out in the hills? Restrictions While Traveling

The major disadvantage of having a small travel trailer is that there are limited amenities. You can’t take everything you want as there is less space inside the trailer. Similarly, you can’t have many guests coming along with you.

Aspects to Consider Before Buying a Small Travel Trailer

If you are seriously considering to buy a small travel trailer, it is important to keep several points in your mind.

It is important that whichever trailer you buy satisfies your needs. So have a clear idea regarding your needs and then narrow down your list of trailers depending on your requirement. The more you spend, the more luxuries and better construction you'll get. But for your first trailer, it's ok to go with something cheaper, after all, you may not take to the great outdoors.

Reliability

It's better if you invest in a trailer that is made up of a structure that is reliable and durable. You don’t want to buy a trailer that needs repairing all too often. Sure, price comes into this, but you can get good quality trailers at reasonable prices.

If you are a family of five, then a small trailer for two won’t help you out. Choosing a trailer while keeping your storage and space demands in check is always something you should consider.

Cautious Considerations to Keep in Mind

A couple of points will help you land on a straight and profitable deal when it comes to travel trailer shopping. These include:

Heater and Generator

Be mindful that you will be spending the nights in a small camper trailer when the temperature drops, so heating plugs and electricity are important. Always keep in mind that you will need a generator setup and heating systems as well.

Ceiling Height

This is one of the most important features to consider, but usually, it gets ignored by most travel trailer enthusiasts. If you're treating yourself with an RV or a travel trailer that comes with luxurious features such as a bathroom, then make sure your trailer is heightened enough that you can easily stand and move around in there. The aim is not to feel claustrophobic in your ride.

People Also Ask

A small travel trailer is meant to provide a comfortable and enjoyable trip with all the amenities. Whether you travel around the desert, mountains, and valleys, these trailers feel safe and protected from extreme weather conditions. Moving forward, we have answers to some of the frequently asked questions by people to ensure them a better experience.

The Best Small RV Campervans in 2024

This post may contain affiliate links. See our privacy policy for details.

Following is a list of the best small RV campervans from around the world available in 2024.

I’ve made no secret of the fact that I love small RVs for their nimble ability to take you everywhere. Even with a family of four, we love a campervan under 25 feet that can park anywhere.

With everything we need on board, we can camp on the beach for the night and sip on local wine while we watch the sunset.

smallest travel rv

We can travel anywhere through the national parks and fit in most campsites. A small RV campervan is one of the best ways to have all the comforts of home while still exploring off the beaten path.

In this list, I’ve included only new 2024 small RV campervans. Large motorhomes and trailers are more common in the US, but small campervans reign in popularity worldwide. As an international RV traveler , I’ve included models from multiple continents on this list.

Don’t worry—this list only includes campervans with an onboard bathroom!

RV, Class B, or Campervan?

While in America we commonly refer to small motorhomes as “Class B” RVs or Class B vans, much of the rest of the world calls them campervans. These campervans may be larger than van conversions, but the main difference is that these are manufactured rigs, not custom builds.

Most manufacturers make Class Bs if they make motorhomes. These are usually available in multiple floorplans and lengths. I note the smallest campervans of their available models in this list. See the manufacturer’s website for alternate floorplans.

Best Small RV Campervans of 2024

This list is in no particular order or ranking, but I do have to first share what I believe is the most popular campervan in America!

Revel by Winnebago

smallest travel rv

Continent : North America

Manufacturer : Winnebago

First released in 2017, I was honored to be one of the first people to test drive and play with the Winnebago Revel. We took it up to the mountains of Colorado (pictured above) and immediately wanted to trade in our 30-footer for this off-road-ready vehicle!

Interior of the small Winnebago Revel camper van, looking towards the rear doors

I think what makes the Revel so special is not only its small size (19.5 feet or about 6 meters), but all of the bells and whistles on board. Equipped with enough solar and batteries to stay off grid for seven days, there are extra large holding tanks, gap-free insulation for winter camping, and an automatic transmission that can carry you anywhere.

Winnebago Revel floor plan.

So many bloggers have tried and loved the Winnebago Revel. I love this video by my friends Kara and Nate comparing a custom-built van to the manufactured (and more expensive) Winnebago Revel.

I love the layout of the Winnebago Revel and how well it maximizes the space (particularly in the bathroom!). It’s perfectly positioned as an adventure vehicle for those who like to get out in the wild and enjoy nature.

Learn More: Visit Winnebago’s website for more specs and features of the Revel.

Interstate Nineteen by Airstream

Exterior view of the Airstream Interstate Nineteen camper van.

Manufacturer : Airstream

Did you know that Airstream doesn’t just make trailers? They stopped making motorhomes a few decades ago, but their Sprinter vans are just as incredible as their iconic trailers!

smallest travel rv

The Interstate Nineteen is the smallest of the Airstream campervans. Measuring at—you guessed it!—19 feet, they offer unique layout options and are more designed for traveling in style than camping. The interiors are luxurious with a price tag to match, but would you expect anything less from Airstream?

Floorplan of the Airstream Interstate 19 campervan

I don’t love this van because I don’t see how it would be ideal for sleeping on that couch. There may be enough seatbelts for four, but there is only enough sleeping room for two max. This wouldn’t be a bad rig for long road trips with the family, particularly if you camped in a tent or stayed in cabins.

See a full walk-through of the Interstate Nineteen by Airstream in this video:

SS Agile by Roadtrek

Exterior view of a white Roadtrek SS Agile campervan.

Continent : North America (Canadian)

Manufacturer : Road Trek

Agile is the perfect name for this tiny van! Roadtrek has an amazing reputation and a cult-like following from its owners. Known for their quality, you’ll see decades-old Roadtrek campervans still puttering around.

Interior of the SS Agile, a small RV / camper van looking towards the seating/bed area in the rear.

This campervan rings in at 19 feet with a convertible bed and seating area. There is more storage onboard than I typically see in campervans, and it has high-end features like the Truma heating system.

This quick one-minute walkthrough video can give you a better idea of the floorplan and the interior design.

One thing I don’t love is the way the cabinets block your sliding door. Campervans of this size will not have onboard air conditioning, so you’ll need fans and windows for airflow. Keeping the sliding door open is one of the best ways to keep an RV cool, and this doorway is a little small.

Nova by Coachman

Side view of white camper van

Manufacturer : Coachman

My first RV was a Coachman, and let me tell you, it was nowhere near as nice as this! The Coachman offers a clean, minimalist interior.

Interior of a beige/brown camper van, looking towards the rear doors, showing a bench seat on each side.

This isn’t a 4WD campervan like the Revel, but with the rear bathroom and bike racks, it has a great adventure layout! I’m partial to rear bathrooms in RVs like this because they are great for extra storage of dirty gear. It keeps the rig cleaner, and most wild campers don’t use the onboard shower often anyway.

Since it is built on the Dodge Ram chassis instead of Mercedes, this is one of the cheaper American-manufactured campervans on this list.

Xcursion by Fleetwood RV

Manufacturer : Fleetwood

Fleetwood just released the new 2024 Xcursion built on the Mercedes Sprinter chassis. This Class B diesel rig measures in at 19.5 feet for the smallest floorplan. (The largest floorplan measures at over 24 feet!)

This new campervan is all white and grey—inside and out. The look is a very fresh, no-fuss interior, though the floorplan looks a little crowded in photos. This is one that I would want to check out all four layouts to see which one would best suit my needs.

Bayside by Chinook RV

Manufacturer : Chinook RV

Not as well known as others on this list, Chinook is also set up in Indiana with many of these motorhome manufacturers.

Chinook RV Bayside Class B RV floor plan.

Built on the Ford Transit chassis (American-made all the way!), this is a rare gas engine. I also love the way the power sofa bed is placed closer to the door so you can actually sit and enjoy the views in comfort!

Arriva by Coach House

Manufacturer : Coach House

I had never heard of Coach House (based in Florida) before researching this list! I heard it said once that for American RV manufacturers to stand out, they need to operate away from Elkhart, Indiana. With so many RV builders in one place, they use the same parts and the same builders, and it’s hard to distinguish manufacturers. I think that idea really shines through in the Arriva. Look at those classy interiors!

The stand-out feature of this van is the high-quality interior design and the bathroom layout. Look how spacious it is compared to other campervans!

Ethos by Entegra Coach

Exterior view of a dark grey Entegra Coach Ethos Class B RV with the pop top roof extended.

Manufacturer : Entegra

When I think of Entegra, I think of Class Cs and humungous diesel pushers. (They have eight models of Class A and 10 models of Class Cs!)

But they also have a lesser-known line of four different Class Bs, the smallest of which is the Ethos.

This is the only coach on this list so far that sleeps four! The pop-top roof allows for a loft sleeping area.

You can see what the pop-top looks like in this video walkthrough:

EKKO by Winnebago

smallest travel rv

I didn’t want to do it. Two campervans by one manufacturer seems a little biased. But from the moment he saw it, my husband fell in love with this RV. Look at this man, so excited he took a selfie with it.

smallest travel rv

I’ve owned a few Winnebagos over the years (so maybe I am biased 😬 ) and when the Ekko was released, it was apparent that this was the RV I was waiting for! It sleeps four with a pop top, similar to the Entegra above. It rides smooth, something I can’t say for every Class B I’ve ridden in.

winnebago ekko

Pros: This RV has EVERYTHING! From off-road capabilities to a full bathroom to room for the whole family!

This layout and design reminds me of the Interstate Nineteen by Airstream, but with even more seating.

Comet by Jayco

Manufacturer : Jayco

Interior view of the Jayco Comet Class B RV showing the lounge and kitchen area with light colored decor.

At less than 18ft, the Comet is compact and the smallest American campervan on this list! And it even has a wet bath. If that wasn’t reason enough to love it, I’m falling in love with these bright and beautiful interiors!

New to the Jayco line of motorhomes, the Comet is perfect for city camping, where having a small and nimble vehicle makes life so much easier. This guy can definitely fit in a standard parking spot!

Small RV Campervans in Europe

There are many manufacturing options across America, but for those of us in the rest of the world, there is no lack of choices either!

Let’s hop across the pond to Europe, where campervans are known for their modern, stylish interiors.

Carrera by Swift Motorhomes

Exterior view of the 2022 Swift Select camper van.

Country : United Kingdom

Manufacturer : Swift Motorhomes

smallest travel rv

The Carrera comes in 5 different layouts, accommodating 2-4 people in seating and sleeping. Because this RV is built in the UK, it will have the driving capabilities all on the left side of the vehicle.

Here’s a video walkthrough showing the features on two of the Carrera floorplans:

Price: from £71,495

I have not included pricing for American rigs on this list, but they are all above $100K USD. I did want to include this price to show that rigs in Europe are MUCH more affordable than American RVs! (A fact I constantly use to convince my husband to spend more time RVing in Europe .)

Manufacturer : Auto Trail

This little beauty is only 5.4M (under 18 feet) so it’s the smallest one I’ve seen out of Europe! But it has all the comforts of home that you need, including a bathroom.

Twin Axess – by Adria

Country : Slovenia

Manufacturer : Twin Axess

smallest travel rv

I’ve rented a few Adria motorhomes , and for the most part, I like them. They do seem a little cheaper than some other brands, but that could be in part because they were rentals and had been through the ringer by many campers!

smallest travel rv

This one looks much more luxurious than the V-Line above to me and is made in mainland Europe. I’ve rented a similar floorplan to this (rear twin that combines into roughly the size of a king), and it’s surprisingly comfortable for a family of four.

Here is a video tour of the Adria Matrix that I filmed in 2022 while traveling across France:

Venture S by Hymer

No campervan list is complete without a product by Hymer. Hymer is one of the most innovative, forward-thinking, disruptive manufacturers worldwide. This next RV proves it. Meet the Venture S—the ONLY two-story campervan on this list.

smallest travel rv

Country : Germany

Manufacturer : Hymer

When I say two-story, this campervan offers much more than just a pop top like those copycat American RVs. Hymer is known for being so creative that it is unbelievable. Just check out these cabinets/staircase to the second floor!

Photos do not do this RV justice. You’ll need to watch this video tour:

Hands down, this is the most beautiful manufactured campervan I have ever seen!

I have to share this European motorhome last because the only place I’ve actually camped in it was New Zealand! Smaller countries like New Zealand ship in RVs from Australia or Europe. I rented this particular model from Wilderness Motorhomes .

I instantly fell in love with this RV, as you can see in this tour video.

This video is from 2018, but you can see the updated interiors and floorplans on the Bürstner website.

Small RV Campervans in Australia

Let’s head down under where camping is just as popular—if not moreso—than it is in Europe and America.

I love these Class B campervans by Horizon Motorhomes! I love following them on Instagram and seeing people enjoying the Australian landscape, soaking in all its beauty. I’m instantly jealous and want to be out there too, and in one of their vans!

JRV Campervan by Jayco

Listen to this familiar name! Yes, the same Jayco brand is built in Australia, with a few country-specific adaptations of course!

Interior of the Jayco JRV 19-1 campervan looking towards the bed in the back.

Jayco must be one of the biggest manufacturers of caravans in Australia, but they’re not nearly so well known for their motorhome and campervan range. However, their popular name and huge dealer network for the caravans (or trailers as we call them in the States) helps them get these campervans out there, too.

Honorable Mention: Campervans in Asia

Camping is not as popular in Asia as it is in America, Europe, and Australia. But it is very popular in Japan! We recently rented an RV, the Evolyte, to tour the country.

I was surprised that I fell in love with this tiny 16-footer! This is one of my favorite RV layouts ever, it is just missing a bathroom 😬 Check it out in this video:

12 Best Small Travel Trailers for a Family of 4

Small Travel Trailer

Small travel trailers come in all different shapes, sizes, and configurations.

But if you’re looking for a small travel trailer that can fit a family of four , this is not always an easy task.

As many small campers are not designed or set up for a family of four to comfortably live and sleep inside the trailer.

So we did a ton of research and created this list of the best small travel trailers for a family of 4 .

To showcase some of the best options, if you’re looking for a small travel trailer designed for families .

Best Small Travel Trailers for Family of 4 (Least to Most Expensive)

Braxton Creek Bushwhacker Plus 17FD Floorplan

One of the smallest and cheapest small traveler trailers on the market for a family of four is the Braxton Creek Bushwhacker Plus 17FD .

Making the trailer perfect for first-time RVers or anyone shopping for a new RV on a budget that still needs to sleep four.

While you’re not going to find too many bells and whistles on this basic small trailer, you do have everything you need for a weekend camping trip with the family .

Including such amenities as a kitchen with a two-burner propane cooktop, sink, and mini-fridge, as well as a small wet bath, a convertible dinette booth, and a rear queen bed.

Scamp 13 Trailer Standard Layout 1

One of my personal favorites when it comes to small travel trailers is the Scamp 13 Standard Trailer because of its super short length, lightweight design, and affordable price point.

But there’s a catch if you want this trailer to sleep four, as you have to option the trailer without a bathroom.

This is because the front of the 13-Foot Scamp Trailer can either be optioned with a convertible sofa that converts into bunk beds or a wet bath.

13 Foot Scamp Trailer Interior

But if you choose the wet bath, the only place to sleep in this small camper is the convertible dinette booth that can only sleep two.

If you can camp without a bathroom though, you won’t find a smaller or lighter travel trailer that can actually sleep four campers at a time.

  • Equipped with a convertible four-person dinette booth, providing a great space for mealtime or family activities like board games.
  • Front bunk beds make a great place for two kids to sleep.
  • Versatile interior, allowing you to set the trailer up to best suit your family’s needs.

As it allows you to choose either the Coachmen or Jayco version of the camper, based on their design and individual features.

Plus, like the Jay Flight , this popular Clipper has the ability to comfortably sleep up to five campers at a time , thanks to its front queen bed, convertible dinette, and rear bunk beds .

In addition, Coachmen also included several upgrades not typically found on entry-level trailers, including certified green construction, extra soft teddy bear bunk mats, and a standard 12-foot power awning with LED lighting.

  • Can comfortably sleep five campers at a time.
  • Has four separate sleeping spaces, allowing for a wide range of sleeping options.
  • Equipped with bunk beds that are great for kids.

When you’re ready to move beyond the basic entry-level small travel trailer, a great option to consider is the Keystone Bullet Crossfire 1900RD .

As this compact trailer has a full exterior fiberglass body, as well as many features throughout that, give it an upgraded premium feel .

Including such features as multiple large windows, a full three-piece dry bath, a large U-shaped convertible dinette, and an upgraded and modern interior.

And as is the case with all campers on this list, this small travel trailer is also great for a family of four.

Thanks to the trailer’s unique hybrid toy hauler/travel trailer design, which features a large rear flip-up hatch and a versatile open cargo area.

Allowing the trailer to act as both a standard travel trailer as well a toy hauler .

Which makes this camper super popular with RVers that enjoy outdoor activities and sports, such as fishing, biking, kayaking, etc…

KZ Escape E17 Hatch Rear Garage

Just because this camper from KZ RV offers toy hauler capability though doesn’t mean it lacks the usual travel trailer creature comforts.

As the Escape E17 Hatch has all the standard RV amenities.

Including a four-person sleeping capacity, a bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen, and a convertible fold-up dinette booth.

  • Offers a built-in four-person dinette booth that provides flex space for the whole family to hang out together.

  • Dry Weight :  3,280 Pounds

Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro E16BH Floorplan

If you liked the above Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro G20BHS but looking for a smaller lighter bunkhouse option, you might want to check out the Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro E16BH .

As this Flagstaff E-Pro, which is the sister RV to the Rockwood Geo Pro, offers a bunkhouse floorplan and is over 2 feet shorter and 200 pounds lighter.

Making it one of the smallest bunkhouse campers available, and ideal for less capable tow vehicles, such as SUVs and small trucks .

Despite the trailer’s smaller size though, it still feels surprisingly spacious inside, thanks to its kitchen slide-out, which helps to open up the interior.

12 Best Small RVs and Travel Trailers (Video Tours!)

Whether you’re downsizing from a home to a small RV, or selling your Class A motorhome, traveling in a small RV can be a huge adjustment. But they come with tons of perks as well!

If you’re ready to make the switch, I’m here to help! This list has my top 12 small RVs and travel trailers out there, plus, what you need to consider while shopping. I’ll cover Class Cs, class Bs, small travel trailers, and I’ve even thrown in a couple teardrop trailers for all you minimalists so you can find the best small RV for you.

Okay, let’s go!

Table of Contents

Pros and Cons of Small RVs and Campers

First off, you’ll want to figure out if a small RV might be right for you. So, here’s my pros and cons list to help you decide:

  • You don’t need a car with massive towing capability
  • You’ll save gas $$
  • Small RVs make it easier to get to off-road spots so they’re great if you love boondocking
  • They’re easier to drive
  • Less storage space
  • If you have a large family, there may not be room for all of you
  • Fewer amenities inside (i.e. some don’t have bathrooms)
  • They have lower capacity holding tanks (sometimes no holding tanks at all)

So, if you’re okay with downsizing your space and potentially not having a full bathroom, small RVs are an awesome choice. They’ll save you money and allow you to get down some windy and bumpy roads that a humungo Class A would never be able to traverse.

How To Decide Which Is the Best Small RV or Camper for You

Before deciding on what the best small RV is for you, go through this list of considerations to narrow down your options. Small RVs can vary a lot in size, floor plan, and weight, so you want to know what your needs are before you even begin shopping.

Family Size

Teeny tiny teardrop campers usually only sleep two, while larger Class C RVs can sleep up to six. Before you shop, consider how many people you’d want to be able to sleep in the RV.

By family size, I don’t only mean the number of people in your family, but literally, the size of the people — traveling with two adults and three toddlers is way different from two adults and three adult-sized teenagers.

Travel Plans

What are you planning to do while RV camping? Does the RV need to be able to handle cold temps? Do you want to live in it full time? Or is it just for the occasional camping trip? The more time you spend in your RV, the more room you might need.

You’ll want to consider the season you will most often be traveling in so you can consider if you need a four-seasons capable RV. If you’re an avid boondocker who likes to get to those off-road spots, you’ll need to look at the off-road capabilities of different RVs.

Towing Vehicle

The difference in towing capacity between an SUV and a V-8 pickup truck is huge! If you’re looking for a towable travel trailer, find your vehicle manufacturer’s rating for the maximum tow weight of your vehicle and search for a travel trailer that’s well under that weight (consider the number of people in the car and amount of stuff you’ll put in the RV as well).

6 Best Mini RVs (Class C and B Motorhomes) for 2022

Of course, these class b and c motorhomes aren’t listed in order of best to worst, or biggest to smallest. Everyone has completely different must-haves for their dream motorhome, so just browse through and see if any of these small RVs are right for you!

Forest River Forester LE

Small Class C without sacrificing must-have amenities.

With a length of around 24’, and built on a Chevy chassis, this Forest River Forester Class C pretty much gives you all your amenities in a nice compact space. It’s not the smallest RV on the list, but if you need a small class C but don’t want to sacrifice a bathroom or storage, this is a great bet.

Forest River Forester LE floor plan

The floor plan gives a master bedroom feel, with the queen bed and bathroom separated from the living area with a curtain. You also get lots of storage, a full kitchenette, and it can sleep up to 6 people! It’s also on the less expensive end for a class c motorhome so you’re getting great bang for your buck.

Here’s the video tour of the Forest River Forester LE

Airstream Atlas Touring Coach

Airstream Atlas Touring Coach

Pure luxury Class C that’s pretty much the size of a Class B

If you’re looking for something a little more fancy, the Airstream Atlas is a gorgeous small motorhome that’s pure luxury inside. While it’s technically a Class C vehicle, it’s pretty similar in size to a typical class b, but you still get a bathroom inside!

airstream atlas flooplan

The interior of the Atlas is gorgeous, but the basic floorplan only sleeps 2. So, if you’re traveling with a big family, this may not be the best option for you. I’d say the Atlas airstream is probably best for couples looking to live the glamping life inside their luxury mini RV.

Since this also has a nice V6 turbo diesel engine and relatively high clearance for a small Class C, you may be able to do some dirt-road driving.

Just be ready to drop some cash on this thing–at the time I’m writing this, the Airstream Atlas will run you $273,273 for the base model 😨.

Winnebago Fuse

Winnebago Fuse

Mid-range small motorhome with everything you need

The Winnebago Fuse is built on the old faithful Ford Transit chassis. It’s around the same length as the Forest River Forester, but it appears a bit more compact.

small winnebago floorplan

The bed system in this small RV can be changed from either two twin beds or a single queen. Plus the sliding door bathroom has a shower, toilet, and sink, all separated from the rest of the living area.

The interior isn’t quite as fancy-looking as the Atlas, but it has more sleeping room and storage. This also isn’t super affordable for a small class C, so if that’s one of your must-haves, a Forest River RV might be a better option for you.

Here’s a video walkthrough of the Winnebago Fuse.

Forest River Sunseeker LE

Forest River Sunseeker LE

Class C with lots of room inside.

The Forest River Sunseeker comes on either a Ford or Chevy chassis (here I’ve got the one that comes on a Chevy). It’s the largest Class C I’ve included on this list at 25’ for the 2150 model.

forest river sunseeker floorplan small rv

The layout is pretty similar to the Forest River Forester that I talked about earlier, but this one has a bit more room overall. My favorite feature of the Forest River RVs is their bunk above the driver’s area, which is the size of a queen bed, so you can sleep six people in here altogether.

Forest River does a great job at jacking up sleeping space and available amenities without the space feeling cramped inside at all. If you have a large family and you need a lot of room, but you still want to go for a Class C, the Sunseeker is a great option that’s also way more budget-friendly than a lot of other RV manufacturers.

Here’s a nice walkthrough tour of the 2022 Sunseeker.

Winnebago Solis

Compact camper van that sleeps four

As far as leisure travel vans go, the Winnebago Solis Class B RV is top of the line. It’s famous for its pop-top (which admittedly looks super awesome), but it’s also got some other cool features like moveable seats and a built-in solar system.

winnebago solis

Although it’s a Class B, this camper van still sleeps FOUR people because of that pop-top. You do still have to sacrifice some amenities though. The bathroom is basically a tiny toilet/shower combo (wet bath), and there isn’t a separate bathroom sink.

The small size and built-in solar on this camper van make it perfect for off-grid off-road adventures. So, if you’re looking for lots of sleeping room but you don’t need a full bathroom, and you might want to do some boondocking, the Solis is a great class b RV.

Check out this video tour of the Winnebago Solis.

Coachmen Nova

Coachmen Nova

The Coachmen Nova is a small RV that’s very similar to the Winnebago Solis, the main difference is that the Nova does not have a pop-top. So, if you’re deciding between the two, the sleeping capacity difference might be how you decide.

coachmen nova

The layout is similar to other leisure travel vans. This bathroom is a bit larger than average, but it’s still just a wet bath and not a full bathroom like you’ll get in Class C’s.

The Coachmen Nova camper van definitely appeals more to the outdoor-activity-inclined folks, with the roof rack that comes standard on each vehicle. You can also get an optional bike rack on the back, plus it has great suspension and high clearance to traverse bumpy back roads.

Check out the 2021 Coachmen Nova video tour here .

6 Best Small Travel Trailer Campers

And now for my 6 favorite small travel trailers (in no particular order)…

Scamp 16 Travel Trailer

Scamp 16 Travel Trailer

A classic retro trailer with your choice of amenities

This is definitely the cutest trailer on my list. The scamp is an RVer favorite for its classic 60s style and its compact layout inside. It’s a lightweight, fiberglass trailer that’s just 16 feet long and easily towable.

scamp 16 travel trailer floor plan

The Scamp is a small camper that offers several different layouts for the 16’ model. The model I have here comes with a shower and toilet (wet bath), and still sleeps four people, which is impressive for how small the trailer is.

The different floor plans allow you to choose between extra storage space, extra sleeping space, a wet bath, a fridge, and some other amenities you might want. So, although it’s still a small travel trailer, plenty of owners live in their Scamps full-time.

If the Scamp 16 is still too big for you, Scamp makes an even smaller model that’s just 13 feet and somehow even cuter.

Here’s Scamp’s video tour of the Scamp 16.

Casita Heritage

A tiny trailer that sleeps five

The Casita heritage is very similar in size and style to the Scamp 16. Its fiberglass shell at just one foot longer, although it does come with some extra goodies like heating and cooling.

Casita Heritage floorplan

The Heritage is a tiny travel trailer that sleeps up to six people with its three sets of double beds. The popular deluxe model even comes with a toilet and a shower. The finishings inside aren’t anything fancy, which is great if you’re not looking for any extravagant design features like in some fancier motorhomes.

Casita trailers are a little easier to get your hands on compared to the ever-popular Scamps, so they may be a more feasible option. Plus, these small trailers are known to be rugged and reliable, so they’re great as a long-term investment.

Here’s a nice tour of the deluxe model .

Oregon Trail’R Frontear Teardrop Trailer

oregon trailer teardrop trailer

A minimalist’s teardrop trailer

Oregon Trail’R is a small company based in Eugene, Oregon that makes these tiny campers custom for each buyer. They allow you to switch up different elements of the teardrop so it’s suited exactly to your needs, which is honestly my favorite thing about the Frontear.

If you’re looking to live minimally while camping, a small teardrop trailer is a perfect choice. They’re easy to tow into hard-to-reach places and way more affordable than traditional travel trailers. That does mean that you’ll have to sacrifice some basic things a normal travel trailer would offer–like, being able to stand up inside.

You also won’t get a bathroom or even a living area with this Frontear Teardrop. It’s essentially just a queen bed inside, with a kitchenette in the back.

Related: If you’re looking for a beautiful, custom build, you have to check out Odyssey Teardrops!

Oregon trailer teardrop interior view

Because this tiny teardrop doesn’t have tons of amenities, it might be more difficult to stay in for long periods of time, or in really hot or cold weather. So, the Frontear is better suited for the occasional couples’ getaway than a 3-month-backcountry camping trip with the whole family.

Here’s a tour of the Oregon Trail’R FronTear teardrop camper.

NuCamp Tagt XL

smallest travel rv

Source: nucamprv.com

A stylish tiny trailer with a beautiful kitchenette

The nuCamp Tag is a bit fancier and less bare-bones compared to the Frontear. It still sleeps just two, but it comes with solar panels on top, a nicer interior, and it has a microwave and a nice large space for a cooler in the back.

kitchen picture from nucamp teardrop camper trailer

The Tag comes in two sizes: standard and XL. Here, I have the XL which is slightly wider so it has a larger bed and more counter space in the kitchen area compared to the standard model.

These are made to order by a very small company, so you know that you’re getting great quality and customer service compared to purchasing from a large dealer.

Like with any tiny teardrop camper, you won’t be getting a living area, restroom, or indoor kitchen, so be prepared to spend lots of time outdoors if you get one of these.

Here’s the 2021 nuCamp Tag XL video tour .

Sylvan Sport GO Camping Trailer

Sylvan Sport GO Camping Trailer

The go-to for adventurers who don’t need more than a tent

The SylvanSport GO is by far the most barebones mini travel trailer I have on my list, but it’s also one of the most popular. The GO is essentially a gear storage trailer with a popup tent pod on it.

sylvansport go mini travel trailer design

The GO has an awesome design and weighs basically nothing compared to most trailers, which means you can tow it with virtually any vehicle that has a hitch. Of course, since this is just a tent, it doesn’t have any amenities, so it’s better for mild weather camping trips than full-time living.

Despite its small size, the GO still sleeps four people inside the spacious tent. This trailer might not be for everyone, but you can’t deny it’s an awesome design.

Here’s a demo video of how the SylvanSport Go works.

Winnebago Micro Minnie

Winnebago Micro Minnie

A small trailer with a separate toilet and shower that sleeps five

The Micro Minnie is a small travel trailer but still manages to fit everything inside. The cheapest model still sleeps five people, it has a shower and a separate toilet (not a wet bath), a dinette, and a kitchenette. The Micro Minnie also has a completely enclosed and heated underbelly so it functions as a four seasons travel trailer for year-round comfortable living.

winnebago micro minnie floor plan

Winnebago offers several different floor plans based on your needs, and some come with murphy beds for even more space-saving. Although it’s not shown in the floor plans, the Micro Minnie does have a lot of storage space.

And here’s the walkthrough video tour of the Micro Minnie.

Try a Small RV Before Buying

RVs–even the smallest of them–are a huge financial investment, and you never know what you like or dislike about the RV until you actually live in it. Or, if it’s your first time maybe you’ll find out that you hate traveling in a mini RV and you wish you’d never bought it!!

Anyway, if you’re a beginner RVer, or wary about spending a gazillion dollars on a small RV you aren’t sure if you love, renting RVs for a quick getaway can be a perfect test drive.

You can do this through a service called RVShare . It is the largest RV rental company in the country. They have tons of RVs from small teardrops to class As, and you can pick up and drop off the RVs in different areas so you don’t have to do a round trip.

The prices are more affordable than you’d think–they start at around $100 per night–so you can easily pick the model you want and take it out for a test!

Find a small RV on RVShare .

Do Mini Campers Have Bathrooms?

Lots of mini campers have bathrooms! If a bathroom is a must-have for you, you’ll definitely be able to find a mini camper that has one. Mini travel trailers and Class B and C RVs tend to offer a floor plan with at least a wet bath, teardrop trailers do not typically have bathrooms.

How Much Do Mini RVs and Travel Trailers Cost?

Mini RVs and small travel trailers range a lot in price–from about $5,000 to over $200,000.

Can You Live Full Time in a Small RV?

Absolutely!

You may have less room to store your items and less living space, but it’s an adjustment that many full-time RVers get used to in no time.

Can a Family Travel Comfortably in a Small RV?

Most small RVs have a sleeping capacity of at least 4 and some sleep up to 6. Just make sure you get an RV that has enough room for everyone to sleep comfortably, and enough storage space for everyone’s stuff.

Whether you’ve decided to go all-in on the luxurious Airstream Atlas, or you just want to give a small RV a test drive with RVshare , I hope you got some useful info about mini RVs.

Happy camping!

9 Best Small Motorhomes On the Market Right Now

9 Best Small Motorhomes On the Market Right Now

Aaron Richardson

  • Last Updated: June 6, 2024
  • 23 minutes read

When some people hear the word “Motorhome,” they instantly draw an image in their mind of hulking Class A motorhomes lumbering down the road in the slow lane.

Though the truth is, there are a lot of great smaller Class B and Class C motorhomes that have many of the amenities and comfort of the luxury Class A motorhomes. All without blocking up highways and trimming overhead trees at the campground.

Of course, a wide range of RV manufacturers are keen on the high demand for compact motorhomes and are quick to load the market with a plethora of makes and models. Adding to the confusion is the fact that a lot of small Class B and Class C RVs are also available in different floorplans and trim levels.

This many small motor home options can be admittedly staggering and hard to choose from.

You might be wondering what some of the best small motorhome are.

To start with, the Winnebago – Ekko 22A and Thor Motor Coach – Gemini 23TE are two strong contenders. Both are from well-known RV manufacturers who have a reputation for producing some of the best small motorhomes. Though they certainly aren’t the only options deserving of your consideration.

Take, for example, the Jayco – Melbourne Prestige 24LP, which has the features and water storage tanks to let you boondock off the grid for multiple days at a time. To help you find the best small Class C or Class B RV to meet your needs, we waded hip-deep into the field to review some of the strongest contenders you can consider in 2023.

The review process included things like keeping an eye out for material build quality, thoughtful layouts, and ease of handling. We also made sure to think about what specific niches each of these mini motorhomes might cater to.

IN THIS ARTICLE

9 Best Small Class B and Class C Motorhomes In 2023

Small class C motorhomes are a type of recreational vehicle (RV) that is built on a truck chassis. They are shorter and narrower than larger class C motorhomes, making them easier to maneuver and park.

Small class C motorhomes typically have one or two slide-outs, which can expand the living space when needed. They typically sleep four to six people and have a bathroom, kitchen, and dining area.

There are a lot of great small motorhomes in the Class B and Class C range.

Though the best small motorhomes often came from long-standing RV manufacturers who have decades of experience refining their trade.

This includes access to material build quality and experience in answering the needs of small motorhome enthusiasts of virtually every stripe.

Here are the list of 9 best small motorhomes to live an adventurous life with full amenities:

1. The Leisure Travel Unity U24RL

Leisure Travel Unity U24RL

  • GVWR of 11,030
  • 188 HP Diesel Engine
  • Total Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 25 gallons
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 29 gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 29 gallons
  • 16,000 BTU per hour furnace
  • Sleeps up to 4 people

The Leisure Travel Unity U24RL small class C motorhome was built on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 chassis and does not have any power slide-out sections.

This helps keep the weight down, for nimble handling on the road, while still keeping it relatively compact for times when you might need to navigate tight campgrounds or RV parks.

Yet for being one of the best small motorhomes the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 also makes the most out of the interior space available.

This is thanks in part to a murphy bed that serves as the master suite bedroom. All told this Class B motorhome can sleep up to four people comfortably.

2. The Winnebago – Ekko 22A

Winnebago - Ekko 22A

  • GVWR of 11,000 lbs.
  • Towing Capacity of 5,000 lbs.
  • 310 HP Gasoline Engine
  • Total Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 50 gallons
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 21 gallons
  • Cassette Toilet

Winnebago made their name during the motorhome booms of the late 1970s through the early 1990s. They have continued to evolve with a high-quality small motorhome like the Winnebago Ekko 22A.

This compact Class C motorhome packs a lot of features into a single, relatively lightweight RV thanks to thoughtful engineering features. All while making sure that it can truly sleep up to four people without everyone feeling packed in like sardines.

Some of the features that help the Winnebago – Ekko 22A stay so compact and nimble includes using a cassette toilet instead of a bulkier large flushing toilet and the black water storage tank that would be needed to support it.

This ultimately translates into a larger bathroom as well as a more spacious kitchen area.  It’s also worth noting that the 310 horsepower Ford Eco Boost engine in the Winnebago – Ekko 22A gives it a lot of power for taking other toys with you.

The 5,000-pound towing capacity means you can bring your boat, a pair of jet skis, or a toy hauling trailer with you on vacation.

3. Thor Motor Coach – Gemini 23TE Class C

Thor Motor Coach – Gemini

  • Total Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 31 gallons
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 37 gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 19 gallons
  • 13.500 BTU Air Conditioner
  • 1 Power Retractable Slide Out
  • Sleeps up to 2 people

The Thor Motor Coach Gemini 23TE was built on a Ford Transit van’s chassis and features a 310 horsepower Eco Boost engine to give it the power it needs to make the most of the compact nimble design.  Though it’s not as small as it might seem when you look at it driving down the road.

This is thanks in large part to the single power-retractable slide-out section with a convertible murphy bed. Of course, Thor Motor Coach goes a step further in maximizing the interior space of the Gemini 23TE by designing the floor plan to only sleep, two people.

There isn’t a convertible dinette or bench somewhere that can turn into additional sleeping. While this might preclude small families, it ultimately makes the Thor Motor Coach Gemini 23TE one of the best small motorhomes for a couple that loves to travel.

There’s even a 39 square inch flat-screen TV directly across from the convertible couch/murphy bed.

In the back of the Thor Motor Coach Gemini 23TE, you will find a spacious full bathroom complete with a large, single bowl sink, a shower stall with a fair amount of elbow room, and a flushing toilet.

All of which are supported by modest water storage tanks that are just the right size for letting you stay off the grid for a few days of boondocking, without being so large that they ungainly add to the weight of this well-designed small motorhome.

4. The Airstream – Atlas Murphy Suite Class B Motorhome

Airstream – Atlas Murphy Suite

  • GVWR of 11,030 lbs.
  • 188 HP Engine
  • Total Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 23 gallons
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 31 gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 23 gallons
  • 15,000 BTU Air Conditioner
  • 16,000 BTU Propane Furnace

Airstream made a commanding name for themselves with their long-standing lineup of gleaming aluminum travel trailers . Though they haven’t let that success pigeon hole them, and they prove that in spades with the compact, yet comfortable Atlas Murphy Suite.

Not only does it have a power-retractable slide-out section, but as the name implies, there is a comfortable murphy bed that converts over the front section sofa .

Here again, the trade-off of interior space and the use of a murphy bed means that this small Class B motorhome will only really sleep, two people.

While it might not be the ideal motorhome for a family, it might be one of the best small RVs for a traveling couple who want an RV that also serves as an easy to drive runabout for touring the surrounding attractions.

5. The Winnebago View 24V Class C Motorhome

Winnebago View 24V

  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 41 gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 41 gallons

As one of the leading RV manufacturers of motorhomes, you had to expect Winnebago would have more than one model on our list of the best small motorhomes.

Their Winnebago View 24V was designed on the popular Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 chassis, which makes for nimble use of the power produced by the 188 HP diesel engine.

This particular iteration can comfortably sleep up to 4 people on paper as well as in the real world. In the rear, there is a “Flex Bed” pair of twin beds that can be converted into a single king-size bed if needed.

The single power-retractable slide-out section is great for maximizing the interior space and holds a couch that also converts into yet more sleeping space.

This configuration not only helps balance out this small motorhome, but it also makes more efficient use of the kitchen and enclosed bathroom at midship.

This further gives families a greater sense of privacy in the rear master suite. All tucked into one of the best small motorhomes on the market today!

6. The Forest River – Sunseeker 2400b MBS Class C Motorhome

Forest River Sunseeker

  • Payload Capacity of 1,079 lbs.
  • Towing Capacity of 4,200 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 420 lbs.
  • Total Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 35 gallons
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 35 gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 35 gallons
  • Sleeps up to 6 people

The 2021 Forest River – Sunseeker 2400B MBS is another well-designed Class C motorhome that uses the very popular Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 chassis and 188 horsepower diesel engine for superior handling and comfort.

They take the design a step further from similar competitor models by engineering a large driver-side power-retractable slide-out section. This keeps the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 chassis compact while driving down the road, yet provides tons of interior space once you set up camp.

There is a true master suite in the rear of the Forest River – Sunseeker 2400B MBS, which makes it one of the best small motorhomes for families that still prioritize a little privacy when traveling.

There’s even a large bathroom adjacent to the rear master suite that is complete with a shower, toilet, and a sink with a medicine cabinet.  On paper the Forest River – Sunseeker 2400B MBS can sleep up to six, though two adults and two teenagers are more realistic.

You also have to like that there’s a TV in the front living area as well as one in the rear master suite.

This means the adults and kids can both watch their own shows at the same time without squabbling. While this might not seem like a big deal on paper, it can be a real saving grace during a long vacation.

7. The Dynamax Corp – Isata 3 Series 24FW Class C Motorhome

Dynamax Corp - Isata 3 Series 24FW

  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 32 gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 32 gallons
  • 20,000 BTU per hour furnace

Dynamax Corp’s RV line is closely affiliated with Forest River, though they are still allowed to maintain their own brand identity.

This is handy for giving them access to Forest River’s quality components, while still being able to put their own unique twists on small motorhomes like the Dynamax Corp – Isata 3 Series 24FW.

This includes things like the reliable Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 chassis and 188 horsepower diesel engine for superior handling and comfort. There’s also a massive side slide-out section on the driver’s side of the Dynamax Corp – Isata 3 Series 24FW.

This means you get a sleek, nimble small motorhome driving down the road, but still, get to enjoy a lot of open floor space when you set up camp.

8. The Winnebago – Solis 59P Class B Motorhome

Winnebago – Solis 59P

  • Towing Capacity of 3,500 lbs.
  • GVWR of 8,900 lbs.
  • 280 HP Gasoline Engine
  • Total Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 21 gallons
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 20 gallons
  • 7,500 BTU Propane Furnace

Once again, Winnebago brings their acumen and experience in the motorhome niche to bear in a compact small motorhome that is easy to drive.

Tipping the scales at only 8,900-pounds the Winnebago – Solis 59P drives very much like the Pro Master van chassis it is built on.

It also helps make the most out of the 280 horsepower generated by the 3.6-liter gasoline engine that powers it.

You also have to like the towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. This is enough to confidently tow a boat or a trailer with other outdoor toys.

The 80-inch width also makes it easy to keep any trailer you tow in your mirrors.

So, you won’t have to suffer the awkward reversing problems that a lot of larger motorhomes have to deal with when set into a small campsite.

There isn’t any sort of slide-out section. Though like many traditional class B campervans the roof of the Winnebago – Solis 59P pops up.

This gives you more interior living and storage space. On paper, you can sleep up to 6 people though four is more realistic.

9. Jayco – Melbourne Prestige 24LP Class C Motorhome

Jayco - Melbourne Prestige 24LP

  • Total Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 43 gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 31 gallons
  • 20,000 BTU Propane Furnace

Jayco is another one of the stronger names in the RV industry with a knack for producing high-quality compact models like the Jayco – Melbourne Prestige 24LP.

This small motorhome is built on the popular Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis, which makes it very easy to drive.

Especially if you need to navigate tight RV parks and narrow campsites.

When you get to your intended destination the massive slide-out section in the driver’s side of the Jayco – Melbourne Prestige 24LP maximizes the interior floor space.

This gives you a truly massive-feeling living room area with a comfortable U-shaped dinette that is perfectly positioned to view the flat-screen TV that comes in the standard package.

It also means you get a true queen size bed and a spacious bathroom in the rear of this relatively small Class C motorhome.

Do I Need A Special Driver’s License Endorsement To Drive A Small Motorhome?

One of the nice things about Class C and Class B small motorhomes is that most states don’t require you to have any sort of special driver’s license endorsement to legally drive it down the road.

Though there are some states like Wisconsin that do have total length requirements for times when you might be towing an excessively long trailer behind it.

Which One Is Bigger A Class C Or Class B Motorhome?

In general, most Class C motorhomes are larger than their Class B counterparts.

Though neither one is anywhere near as large as the massive Class A motorhomes that dominate the slow lane on many an interstate highway.

Which Small Motorhome Is Easier To Drive Class B Or Class C?

Most people will tell you that the camper van or transit van chassis that most Class B motorhomes are built on makes them easier to drive down the road.

They also tend to have a better turning radius for navigating through small RV parks and tight campsite.

It’s also worth noting that Class B motorhomes are less affected by high wind warnings , compared to a lot of Class C motorhomes with a bunk area over the cab.

Is A Diesel Or Gasoline Engine Better For A Small Motorhome?

This depends on how you plan to use the small motorhome. If you are going to be towing trailers a lot or going on frequent long drives, then you might want to prioritize a small motorhome with a diesel engine.

If you are going to be using the small motorhome for short summer time trips, then a gasoline engine might be the best option for a small motorhome.

Where to Find Small Motorhomes for Sale in the USA

Small motorhomes are a great option for people who want to experience the freedom of RVing without the hassle of driving a large vehicle. They are also a good choice for people who are on a budget, as small motorhomes can be much more affordable than larger models.

There are many places where you can find small motorhomes for sale in the USA. Here are a few of the most popular options:

  • Online marketplaces: Websites like RV Trader, eBay, and Craigslist often have a wide selection of small motorhomes for sale. You can search by make, model, year, price, and location to find the perfect RV for your needs.
  • RV dealerships: Many RV dealerships also sell small motorhomes. This can be a good option if you’re looking for a new or certified pre-owned RV.
  • Private sellers: You can also find small motorhomes for sale by private sellers. This can be a good option if you’re looking for a good deal or a unique RV. However, it’s important to be careful when buying from a private seller, as there is no guarantee of quality or warranty.

While you’re shopping for your future small motorhome, it’s important to consider your needs and budget. Small motorhomes can range in price from a few thousand dollars to $100,000 or more.

Before approving the deal to purchase, think about how you’ll be using the RV.

Do you plan on doing a lot of off-road camping? then, you’ll need an RV with four-wheel drive and a larger fuel tank. Are you mostly interested in car camping? you can get away with a smaller, less expensive RV.

No matter where you buy your small motorhome, be sure to do your research and inspect the RV carefully before you make a purchase. This will help you avoid any surprises down the road.

How to find a small motorhomes for sale near me

Finding small motorhomes for sale near you can be as easy as checking your local RV dealerships and classifieds.

Here are some tips to help you locate the perfect compact RV:

  • Check RV dealerships: Local RV dealers are a great place to start your search. They often have a selection of new and used Class B and C motorhomes for sale. Test drive different models to see what layout and features you prefer.
  • Browse online marketplaces: Websites like RV Trader and RV Gurus list thousands of RVs for sale across the country. Use filters to narrow down listings by location, make, model, and price to find motorhomes near you.
  • Scan local classifieds: Sites like Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace are worth checking for private sellers offering small motorhomes for sale in  your local area. You may find a good deal on a used RV this way.
  • Attend RV shows: RV shows and expos are a great opportunity to see many small motorhomes under one roof.  Talk to representatives from different manufacturers to compare options and get recommendations. Shows are typically held seasonally.
  • Consider rental fleets: Some RV rental companies sell their used rental motorhomes at discounted prices.

These RVs tend to be well-maintained and can be a cost-effective option.

Do your research. Read consumer reviews and check reliability ratings to identify the most dependable makes and models.

Narrow your search based on features that matter most to you.

Inspect thoroughly. When you find an RV that interests you, arrange an in-person inspection. Check for signs of water damage, mechanical issues, and general wear and tear.

Small motorhomes are very popular with small families, couples, and retirees that hear the call of the open road. They tend to be much easier to drive than larger Class A motorhomes that dominate the open road.

This makes them convenient for finding places to camp in rustic campgrounds or RV parks that have space requirements that limit larger motorhomes. The best small motorhome for you will vary depending on your traveling preferences.

If you are looking for a small motorhome that can tow a boat or a heavy trailer behind you, then the Forest River – Sunseeker 2400W MB Class C Motorhome with its 7,500-pound towing capacity might be the best option for you.

If you have more than one child and you want to have enough space for everyone to sleep comfortably, then the Dynamax Corp – Isata 3 Series 24FW might be the best small motorhome for your family.

The massive side slide-out section and the copious storage really let everyone stretch out and feel like they have their own space. Yet it’s also compact, sleek, and easy to drive down the road.

If your family loves to boondock off the grid, and you need the fresh and wastewater storage tanks to support you, then the Jayco – Melbourne Prestige 24LP might be the best small motorhome for you.

Not only can it hold the water you need for multiple days of off the grid camping, but it also has enough sleeping space to let the entire family sleep comfortably. Whatever your family’s needs happen to be, chances are good that the best small motorhome for you is somewhere on this list.

The Science of Keeping Cool: Understanding RV Ventilation

Published on August 18th, 2024 by Thomas Godwin

A stagnant, stuffy environment with poor RV ventilation is no way to live. On hot summer days, it can reach unbearable levels. Add in the family dog releasing air from both ends, or the aftershocks of a trip to Taco Bell, and suddenly, piling out of the RV to sleep in the rain sounds like an enticing option.

Cool is comfortable and clean, fresh air even more so. Some RVers get a little unlucky in this regard, with vents that are small or otherwise underwhelming in operation. It can be challenging, especially if you’re in the southwest or the southeast in the middle of July.

A properly ventilated RV improves your attitude and comfort. It’s also good for you mentally and physically. Fortunately, we won’t leave you hanging in that dead, stagnant air. This little write-up will cover the basics, along with types of vent systems, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization. If you want to avoid a blanket party without the blankets, stick around and read on!

Basics of rv ventilation systems.

RV ventilation happens on a micro scale compared to ventilation in a traditional home. Big Class A motorhomes mitigate this somewhat, but the point remains the same. Changes happen faster, and when your RV’s ventilation is poor, it will not go unnoticed for a long time.

In a nutshell, heat rises, and RV vents allow that warm air to circulate up and out. There are manual vents and automatic vents, but the only change is in how they operate and how well they operate. Some come with a fan to expedite the process, and some do not.

Natural Ventilation

An unpowered RV ventilation system is as much about what you do to create airflow in your RV as it is about what the RV offers to accommodate it. You’ve probably experienced natural airflow currents before. When you leave a window or a door open in a building, you’ll notice that other doors inside the building slam shut.

Opening the vent in your RV roof is not enough on its own. Opening a window along with the vent, however, is like closing the circuit in an electrical system. You effectively create a pathway for air to travel, pushing the hot air up and out through the vent.

Windows, roof vents, doors, or anything else that exposes the interior to the exterior are natural ventilation points.

Mechanical Ventilation

As you can imagine, mechanical ventilation is, well, mechanical. There are all kinds of mechanical RV ventilation systems out there, and every brand will tell you theirs is the best.

The benefit of having a fan is that it hastens the process of circulation, pulling the hot air out and letting the cooler air in. After all, a more comfortable living environment is the goal.

Natural ventilation systems are better for boondockers and those who like to go off the grid for a while since they require less power. When you have plenty of juice or prefer shore power, however, it’s hard to beat the optimized airflow of a mechanical system.

Air conditioners , roof vents, swamp coolers (evaporative coolers) , or whatever you can throw together with some ice, PVC pipe, portable fans, and a Styrofoam cooler are all forms of mechanized ventilation. Throw in exhaust fans and intake vents, and that just about covers all of them.

A regular old box fan sitting in the doorway counts as well, so feel free. RV ventilation is not a singular effort, so get creative!

The technology is all over the place. There are vent fans with rain sensors, as mentioned above, and remote controls to activate them. There are even vent fans you can tie into a smart home system and operate with your lovely voice. It’s always fun telling Alexa what to do.

Whatever your persuasion, there’s something on the market to accommodate you. If you want to get downright bougie with it, what are you waiting for?

How RV Ventilation Systems Work

The process of RV ventilation is relatively cut and dry. A lot of it revolves around air pressure. Air pressure actually has a preference, and that preference is to remain the same, no matter where it’s at. When all of your doors and windows are closed, the air pressure in your RV is usually lower than the air pressure outside.

Principles of Airflow

When you open a door, the air rushes in to equalize the interior and exterior. This inflow process is amplified if you have an outflow (vent or another open egress point). These pressure changes are why your interior doors in a residential home have a tendency to slam shut when you open an exterior door.

A powered or mechanical roof vent is both an inflow and outflow—like two open doors or windows. This is true even when all of your windows and doors are shut and the fan is running. There is no such thing as a completely sealed RV with zero inflow whatsoever. If that were the case, RVs would become suffocation chambers, and they probably wouldn’t sell as well 😂.

Of course, hot air rises and cool air settles, explaining the world’s most baffling mystery—why hot air balloons travel up. We’re kidding. When inflow and outflow are rolling right along, that hot air is expelled through your vents, allowing the cool air to fill the room. The better your transfer efficiency with your RV ventilation, the faster and more effective your cooling system will be.

Role of Insulation

Heat doesn’t just come in through an open window or door. Heat transference occurs through other materials, such as your RV’s walls and windows. This energy is a “radiating” energy type, not to be confused with radiation. A nuclear RV is not a thing…yet.

Insulation reduces this heat transference and subsequent heat-radiating effect within the RV. In the process, it improves airflow by reducing the amount of heat the vent has to transfer from within to without.

Optimizing Ventilation for Maximum Cooling Efficiency

Now, every RV comes with some level of inflow and outflow efficiency, even if it’s just in the form of windows. The key to comfortable living is figuring out ways to optimize it.

Natural Ventilation Strategies

Let’s say you have a natural roof vent with no power or fan. What do you think is the better option: opening a window in the same room as the vent or opening a window/door as far away from the vent as possible? The answer is the latter. Of course, you can open all of your windows, but that wouldn’t necessarily be the solution you think it is.

The more windows that are open, the better able the outside air is to equalize pressure with the inside air. A window or two on the opposite side of the RV, away from the vent, will help create better airflow. Think of it in terms of a wind tunnel. You have to have the tunnel to create one. Remove the tunnel, and the air pressure equalizes, settling down.

Alone, a vent may not be enough in terms of outflow. You may need to open another window on the other side of the RV to create a more effective cross breeze.

Mechanical Ventilation Strategies

Unfortunately, mechanical ventilation systems won’t take away all of the work. There are still ways to maximize it. Besides, if you’re in South Florida in July or August, you’ll want to do everything possible to maximize airflow and cooling.

First and foremost, you need the right roof fan, which is indeed one of those instances where you get what you pay for. The Maxxair MAXXFAN Deluxe generally gets a lot of hype, but Maxxair also gets a lot of criticism. Be sure to do your research before you dive into a purchase.

Use your exhaust fans to help remove hot air and reduce the strain on your RV ventilation system as a whole. They’re there for a reason, and even if you have a really small one, some pull is better than nothing at all. This is especially true if working in conjunction with other outflow options.

If the weather is particularly nasty and opening the door or windows is not an option, portable fans are worth their weight in gold, especially if you already sleep with one. Fortunately, these things come in all shapes and sizes. There’s everything from a warehouse fan down to a portable, battery-powered fan-mist device.

Some of the smaller fans that plug into USB ports put out a surprising amount of air, especially for something like a little reading nook. You can run one for nearly an entire day on nothing more than a 30,000 mAh portable charger.

Insulation and Sealing

You probably read the term “ preventative maintenance ” quite often here at Do It Yourself RV. The importance of preventative maintenance cannot be overstated.

In the summer, install reflective film on your windows to minimize heat transference and give your insulation a well-deserved break. Thermal curtains and blinds are also good ideas. Weatherstripping, an RV vent cover, and fans minimize what the insulation can’t take care of.

Window shades and awnings are always helpful, and remember to park in the shade throughout the summer months and in sunlight throughout the winter months.

Establish an inside and outside routine, checking your walls and exterior for cracks, leaks, or any broken seals. These can develop into serious issues, especially if water from the rain or moisture from the air has unfettered access to your insulation. If you find them, seal them. Don’t wait around to do it some other time.

Maintenance Tips for Ventilation Systems

Again, with preventative maintenance. It never gets old! Maintenance is vital to keep that airflow going, even if you have a simpler, natural RV ventilation system. You don’t have to tackle these things each and every day. If that were the case, no one would bother owning an RV for all the extra work.

However, you need to establish a general routine for cleaning your vent system. It’s better to just make a day of it—covering your vent system and performing a full inside-out inspection as well. Most RV vents are generally accessible, and you can use an air compression can to blow off the blades.

Clean and wipe everything else down, avoiding dust buildup whenever possible. While you’re cleaning, check everything over for any signs of damage or signs that something needs to be replaced soon.

You don’t have to do much to adjust your ventilation system from summer to fall to winter, but you will have to make adjustments to the things you do to assist it. You obviously don’t want a highly efficient inflow and outflow in the middle of a north Minnesota or Alaska winter.

Troubleshooting Common Ventilation Problems

Nothing good lasts forever, and eventually, things will wear down over time. No matter how well you clean a mechanical fan, there’s no such thing as an infinite motor. Some things happen due to negligence or faulty craftsmanship, and others due to time.

Poor Airflow

RVs are infamous for not having highly efficient airflow systems right off the buyer’s lot. Nevertheless, the first thing you need to do is look for blockages. If you create a cross breeze flow with one side of the RV to the vent, the vent may not be enough.

Sometimes, this means upgrading your RV ventilation system to a mechanical system from a natural or a better mechanical variation with more pulling power. Adding additional vents is helpful as well. Consider adding RV vent covers. Many RVers say that simply adding a vent cover makes a huge difference.

For humid climates, dehumidifiers are the way to go. Unfortunately, the moment you open a door or a window will undo everything the dehumidifier does. It’s best to use the dehumidifier at night when you’re sleeping. Humid air is much more irritating when you breathe it in as you sleep.

Portable fans combined with dehumidifiers help dry the air as well. Just be careful at night. If you leave a portable fan blowing directly on you, you might wake up feeling like you breathed in the entire Sahara Desert.

RV ventilation systems are far more important than you realize, especially when dealing with the cold and hot extremes of the seasons. They work even better if you can stay on the move, traveling to locations that are best, depending on the time of the year. Head to southern states in the winter and northern states in the summer.

Preventative maintenance is key; even if you are planning on upgrading, you need to make the best of what you have until you reach that point. Speaking of points, the point is to have the most relaxing and comfortable time in your RV. An efficient RV ventilation system will help with that.

Living and/or camping in an RV is supposed to be fun and relaxing, not moments of being reduced to a puddle of sweat on the floor or an ice cube in the corner. Upgrade or improve your RV vent system and enjoy the R&R. You’ve earned it!

History of Tver Oblast

According to archaeological excavations, the first permanent settlement on the territory of the present Tver region existed in the 9th-10th centuries. In the 1130s-1140s, during the struggle of Rostov-Suzdal princes against Novgorod the Great, on the site of the former, unfortified settlement, a new fortress was built - Tver. It was first mentioned in the chronicles in 1208.

As an independent state, the Tver principality was formed in the 1240s-1250s. This initially sparsely populated and relatively remote from the Horde region attracted numerous settlers. From the first decades of its existence, the Tver principality played an important role in the social and political life of the Russian lands.

In the 14th-15th centuries, Tver competed with Moscow for leadership in the unification of Russian lands. It was one of the main centers of handicraft production and international trade. An indicator of the breadth of foreign trade relations of the Tver principality was the famous trip of the Tver resident Afanasy Nikitin to India in 1466-1472.

More historical facts…

In 1485, the Tver principality became part of the Moscow state. The troops of Ivan III, after a three-day siege, captured Tver. In 1569, during the campaign of Ivan the Terrible against Veliky Novgorod, the town was looted by the oprichniks, and, in the Time of Troubles, Tver was burnt by the Poles.

In 1775, the Tver governorate was formed, in 1796 - the Tver guberniya (province). In the second half of the 19th century, the local industry began to develop rapidly facilitated by the construction of the Nikolayev (Oktyabrskaya) railway.

In 1931, Tver received a new name - Kalinin, in honor of Mikhail Kalinin - a Bolshevik revolutionary. In 1935, Kalinin oblast was established. During the Second World War, fierce battles took place on the territory of the region. During the fighting of the initial period of the war, Kalinin, as well as other towns in the region, were almost completely destroyed.

In the post-war period, this region became an important industrial center and transport hub with enterprises of chemical industry, weaving, heavy engineering. In 1990, the historical name was returned to the city, and the region was renamed Tver Oblast.
