Leicester Rock and Roll band Showaddywaddy to kick off 50th anniversary tour in Edinburgh

  • Thursday 16 February 2023 at 8:00pm

Showaddywaddy are set to kickstart their 50th anniversary tour with more tickets announced to be on sale soon.

The Leicester band will be performing their iconic hits such as Blue Moon to fans all over the UK. Here's everything you need to know about their upcoming tour:

When is Showaddywaddy's 50th anniversary and where is it?

The 70s Rock band will commence their nationwide tour on Friday at Edinburgh's Playhouse and go on to perform 89 shows until the last leg of the tour ends at The Picturedrome in Holmfirth on December 7.

What happened to the lead singer of Showaddywaddy?

Dave Bartram was a founder member of the band Showaddywaddy, whose 1976 chart-topper Under The Moon Of Love peaked at number one for three weeks.

After 38 years of being the front man, Mr Bartram stepped down in 2011, performing his last gig in Ilkley, West Yorkshire.

Regardless of no longer fronting the band, Mr Bartram still manages the band's affairs and makes the occasional stage appearance.

What happened to Showaddywaddy?

Although their hits no longer top the charts the band have said they never stopped performing.

The Showaddywaddy stars continued to tour ever since their formation in 1973, and it's believed they still do around 100 dates a year in the UK and Europe. However, this is now without two of their members.

Bill "Buddy Gask"  spent 14 years with the group and sang lead vocals on the band's first hit single Hey Rock 'n' Roll in 1974 - he passed away in 2011.

Bassist Al James, real name Geoffrey Betts was the latest member to pass, having died in hospital in 2016, three weeks after falling at his Market Harborough home.

Al James was a member of the band for 35 years, and retired in 2008.

Why are they called Showaddywaddy?

Before being Showaddywaddy, they were two bands that played at local gigs together in a Leicester pub.

In 1973 Known as Choise and the Golden Hammers at the time, they met at the Fosse Way Pub and once they heard each other’s sound, they joined forces to form an eight-piece band.

They chose a name from the backing vocals of a song they had written called 'Hey Rock 'n' Roll,' and Showaddywaddy were born.

Where can I purchase tickets?

Tickets are still on sale, with more due to become available and can be purchased from Showaddywaddy’s official website .

Paula Abdul Cancels Tour over 'Minor Procedure' to Treat 'Recently Sustained' Injuries

"It truly breaks my heart," the singer and dancer said of the cancellation in a Wednesday, Sept. 4 Instagram post

Paula Abdul has been forced to cancel her upcoming Canadian tour.

In an announcement posted to her Instagram on Wednesday, Sept. 4, Abdul, 62, shared that she needs to undergo a “minor procedure” to treat some “recently sustained” injuries, and the recovery time will leave her unable to make the start of the tour later this month.

“It’s with an incredibly heavy heart that I need to share with you an update regarding some injuries I’ve recently sustained. In an effort to keep going, I’ve received targeted injections that will allow me temporary relief, but the demands of an entire tour is a different story,” her post began.

“After multiple consultations with my doctors and exploring all available options, I’ve been advised that one of my injuries requires a minor procedure followed by a 6-8 week recovery time, therefore it will prohibit me from proceeding with the Straight Up! to Canada Tour as well as the dates in Alaska and North Dakota.”

Going on to share her “deepest apologies,” to her fans in Canada and the U.S., Abdul said that the news “truly breaks my heart.”

“I’ve been looking forward to the energy, love, and connection we always share when we’re together,” she continued. “I promise I’ll be back, stronger and better, dancing my heart out and performing for all of you very soon, to give you the show you deserve.”

“Refunds will be available at your point of purchase,” the singer and dancer added, before concluding her post, “Thank you for your love, your patience, and your understanding during this time. With all my love and gratitude, XoP ♥️💋🇨🇦 🇺🇸.”

A representative for Abdul did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for additional information.

Abdul’s Straight Up! to Canada Tour was due to kick off on Sept. 25 in Victoria, British Columbia and run through until Oct. 26.

The tour also included a night in Fargo, North Dakota on Oct. 12, while Abdul was also due to perform in Anchorage, Alaska, four days before the tour was scheduled to begin.

Abdul’s news came after she joined New Kids on the Block for The Magic Summer 2024 Tour , which wrapped on Aug. 25.

A nostalgic nod to their record-breaking stadium tour in 1990 , the band were also joined by DJ Jazzy Jeff for the 40-date run, which began on June 14.

Following the tour’s wrap, Abdul — who previously performed with the New Kids on their Total Package Tour in 2017 — took to Instagram on Aug. 27 to share the “BIGGEST thank you” to band members Joey McIntyre , Donnie Wahlberg , Danny Wood and brothers Jonathan and Jordan Knight .

“I feel so grateful to have been able to share the stage with you each and every night. The charisma and connection you have with your audience is beautiful to see,” wrote Abdul. "And to the Blockheads, thank you for embracing me and my dancers with your energy and enthusiasm night after night! I love you all SO MUCH! 💋MAGIC SUMMER FOREVER 💜✨."

Review: Pink’s Tacoma concert worth the wait after 2023 cancellation

Concert review.

Pink flew through the air to open her show at the Tacoma Dome on Tuesday night before soaring through an uplifting collection of new and old hits in front of a sold-out crowd of ravenous fans.

The show, rescheduled from last October when a family medical emergency forced Pink to cancel, was the first of two nights at the Tacoma Dome and proved to be well worth the nearly yearlong wait.

After Irish pop-rock band The Script turned in a solid opening set, Pink got going with the appropriately titled “Get the Party Started.” The slinky piece of dance-pop perfection was one of the biggest hits from her 2001 sophomore album “Missundaztood,” which solidified Pink as a force in post-’90s pop.

Donning sequined leotards and jackets and rocking her signature short blonde hair, Pink’s many costume changes throughout the night straddled the line between rock and pop, as her music often does. With a full band and backup singers — not to mention a cadre of talented dancers — triumphant arena pop like “Who Knew” and the radiant exuberance of “Just Like a Pill” shook the Dome as fans sang along.

Many artists are loved, even beloved, but there seemed to be a special kinship between Pink and her fans — many clad in her signature color — that was evident throughout the night. Between songs and bantering with her band, Pink spoke to the diverse, inclusive crowd like old friends and featured many LGBTQ+ couples in attendance on her stage screen. It all helped give weight to her music’s empowering themes that she came across like a real person, not a celebrity who has been in the public eye for decades.

Just days away from turning 45, Pink has been performing for nearly 30 years after getting her start at age 15 by forming girl group Choice. The confidence that experience affords her shone through on songs like her Top 10 hit “What About Us” and even “Make You Feel My Love,” a Bob Dylan cover.

Pink and her backup singers turned in a lovely version of “Please Don’t Leave Me,” off her fifth album “Funhouse,” during an extended acoustic set. They followed that up with “Don’t Let Me Get Me,” a No. 1 hit in 2002. It was easy to tell that the four ladies had been singing together for quite some time, and it was impressive how Pink reigned in her powerful, laser-focused voice as she shared the spotlight.

So much of Pink’s music carries with it uplifting messages, and there was a palpable sense of joy and healing emanating from the audience. When she sang “May the light be upon me/May I feel in my bones that I am enough/I can make anywhere home” during “I Am Here,” it came across as a salve for the existential anxieties that are a seemingly unavoidable part of 21st-century life.

Another cover, 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up?,” proved to be a welcome respite from some of the more pounding anthems and provided another singalong opportunity. It was interesting to hear the reverence Pink approached the song with, apparently unwilling to switch up one of her favorite childhood songs too much.

Thankfully, Pink wasn’t just there to run through her old hits and childhood favorites. While there’s nothing wrong with a little nostalgia, it was nice to see that an artist as talented as Pink has remained vital and is still recording new material.

She played a number of songs off her 2023 album “Trustfall,” which reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200, including the eponymous power anthem. While the recorded version leans more into electronica, on Tuesday her band turned the song into a driving rocker as her dancers pulled off daring trampoline stunts.

Fittingly, Pink closed out her main set with “Never Gonna Not Dance Again,” another new song, before quickly coming back for an encore and taking flight once again during her 2008 banger “So What.” This time, she truly appeared to be flying as she zipped around the arena like a rock star Tinkerbell.

Pink returns to the Tacoma Dome on Wednesday night.
