Death, Tragedy, and the great Texan Beyond

San Antonio is known for its diverse cultural scene, good food, and vibrant nightlife. The famous Riverwalk wasn’t always the tourist attraction it is now though, it too has a past. The history of this great city goes all the way back to the 1836 Battle of the Alamo and the fight for Texas’ independence from Mexico before it chose to join the United States. The bright future as a part of the United States cleared a path to build the great city of San Antonio, the majestic buildings of the historic downtown lining the ribbons of dark water that run through this place. However, these same rivers once ran red with blood and bloated corpses floated downstream.

As a hotbed of spooky activity, the city cannot be matched for its countless stories of strange and spooky happenings. Here in River City, you will encounter an eclectic mix of the historic and the modern, the old and the youthful, the beautiful and the ugly.

Let us take you deep into the history of the Alamo they never taught you in school. During this enlightening and shocking journey through the ghosts and history of River City, you will come to understand the shocking truth about San Antonio’s past and what lies beneath virtually every block of this stunning city.

Why is San Antonio So Haunted?

At the Battle of the Alamo, the Texas Defenders were a rag-tag group of outlaws, rebels, and pioneers who had sought out the wild frontiers of Texas to make a life for themselves. This led to a fierce spirit of self-determination and the resolve to rebel against the re-annexation of Texas by the Mexican Army, led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna .

The Texas Defenders were spirited, even though they knew they were outnumbered. They sent out the call for help, but few came to their aid. The result was one of the bloodiest battles in Texas history and one of the key events in the history of the nation. The initial rout was bloody and cruel, no prisoners were taken, the messengers sent to rally support took stories of cruel deaths and gore lining the dusty streets of the town. Some came to help, but not enough. Soon all were dead inside the Alamo, and a great many more outside. Bodies were burnt in great piles of burning flesh, men stacked like cordwood, aflame. And if not engulfed in flame, then cast into the rivers to float away and poison the only water for drinking for miles around.

To describe much of downtown San Antonio as a graveyard is not too far from the truth.

The grizzly deaths of the brave soldiers of the Alamo eventually inspired people from across the state to join the cause of Texian Liberty and ultimately led to the defeat of President General Antonio López de Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto in 1836.

Add to this gruesome event the rough frontier town nature of the place and the stories of human loss and suffering begin to mount, and the ghosts are sure to follow.

From its time as a Spanish Mission town to the rapid growth of recent years, San Antonio has retained its quirky frontier nature. As Frederick Law Olmsted, the designer of Central Park described it on a tour of the south, “San Antonio rivals only New Orleans in its odd and antiquated foreignness”. One foreign thing is the refrains of Texas German you might still hear around the city, from the heavy German migration around the start of the 20th Century.

The dead still rest underfoot in many areas of the city – pioneering men, women, and children whose presence can still be felt, especially late at night when the city is fast asleep.

San Antonio has another kind of nightlife, one that not everyone is brave enough to investigate. Let us guide you on this moonlight tour, and reveal the haunted past of San Antonio.

With so many tours and activities to choose from San Antonio, how do you choose which ones to book?

Reasons to take the river city ghosts tour.

You need a crash course in the history of San Antonio

All the locations we visit, on the standard tour, and the extended tour, offer an insight into the history and character of River City, from the earliest days as a Spanish mission, through the upheaval of the Spanish Independence War , to the Civil War and today’s modern growth every period has its ghosts and they are a wonderful way to bring the past alive, and much more memorable than a bus tour or a museum.

Let the fascinating local guides bring the personality of San Antonio to life for you tonight.

You want an activity the whole family can enjoy

Ghost tours can be overwhelmingly scary. We try to balance the grim truth and educational insight into how things were at various stages of San Antonio’s Development. For example, the extended tour visits the charming and atmospheric stop at La Villita, Spanish for Little Village, your ghost tour will pass by the front yard where a Doctor boiled the heads of dead Comanche warriors, to study their skulls, he claimed, but will you believe his reason after hearing the whole story?

Even though the story is quite ghastly, we deliver tours that are for the whole family, are completely accessible, the guides of River City Ghosts are all consummate professionals who will entertain with true stories from the past.

You are a Non-Believer, testing the waters of the supernatural

Some of the ghost stories require a big leap; others are just obviously true. We never try and change your mind, but all the stories are well researched, and the settings are straight out of the history books.

We rely on first-hand accounts that were plausible and don’t include the more farfetched tales. If you are the suggestible kind, you might prefer to believe that ghosts are a figment of the beholders’ imagination. And if you are at all religious, then the concept of purgatory, resurrection, and visitation by spirits is not a very big leap at all. Whatever your point of view, we offer a lot more than the prospect of looking for a white apparition to present itself. You’ll hear tales of human struggle, adversity, and misery, that at the worst, will make you grateful for your lot.

Have you heard of the multiple suicides that have happened at the Tower Life Building? Starting with one of the brothers who built the tower, after things got really bad in the Depression of 1929, Jim Smith, the CEO of the very successful company, could see no way out and dramatically flung himself from the roof of the tower.

He seemed to have started something; there have been several confirmed attempts since then, the most recent one in 2016. It’s for you to decide if it’s just a copycat way to take your own life, or if the building is cursed and feeds on negative thoughts. Join the tour to hear the full story, it has several more facts that might provide overwhelming evidence of supernatural activity.

In San Antonio and Don't Know What to Do.

There is lots to do in San Antonio; you could walk around in the hot midday sun or visit one of the many museums and deep dive into the Alamo’s fascinating history. If you want to get a broad insight into the city, you could take a bus tour and see everything from behind glass. They all have their advantages, but only River City Ghosts gets you up close and personal to the sites, in the cool evening light, and brings history to life with the memorable tales of real people who lived and died in San Antonio.

River City Ghosts provider a different perspective on the vibrant and beautiful city of San Antonio; we take you to the safe and tranquil setting of the River Walk. Still, we tell you all about its less than respectable past. As late as the 1950s, the San Antonio Old City River Walk was a seedy area with high crime and a large homeless population. The scene of many murders, the River Walk, was only recently cleaned up into today’s charming attraction.

You’re on a tight schedule

Visiting San Antonio for just the weekend? Only one or two days to see everything? Are your mornings and afternoons filled with other things? Then an evening tour with River City Ghosts might be just the thing to help you cross off a wide variety of downtown locations and get an entertaining tour of the city. As well as the entertaining and downright spooky ghosts’ stories, we also weave in a lot of local history and bring the dramatic story of San Antonio to life with animated and knowledgeable local guides.

Get an insider look at the San Antonio culture

We’ve all heard of the Alamo; we were taught about the basic outline of events at school. Taking the River City Ghost Tour will not only bring you to the actual site of the battle, but we’ll tell you stories no school child has ever heard.

For example, the Alamo today would not exist if it were not for the intervention of people from beyond the grave. When the Mexican army surrendered to General Sam Houston and his troops at the battle of San Jacinto, the word was quickly sent to burn the Mexican occupied Alamo and retreat south. The soldiers at the Alamo that received the order went back to burn the buildings but quickly returned, with no smoke in the sky. They reported they had been stopped by six spectral figures wielding swords of pure flame. Astonished, their commanding officer also went to burn down the Alamo, but returned too, with a pale face and a look of astonishment in his eyes. ‘El Diablo!” he concurred, and the army retreated, leaving the Alamo intact.

Be a tourist in your own backyard

Are you a resident of San Antonio? We would lay money that you have not heard all the ghost stories we tell on the River City Ghosts tour of your fair city. Maybe you heard only some of the stories or got a slightly different version.

Being a tourist in your own town is a great way to break out of the normal routine of life, support some local businesses, and try something new. All tours start and end at the corner of Crockett Street and North St Mary’s Street, we will doubtlessly visit some locations you may have driven past, but do you know their history? Are you familiar with the stories of the haunting of the Empire theatre ? Can you tell people why they might have their arm grabbed by a shabbily dressed man asking for twenty-five cents?

Imagine the rich and spooky tales you will be able to relate to the next out-of-town visitors you welcome to beautiful San Antonio if you have the memorable and entertaining stories from River City Ghosts under your belt.

The 25 Best Things To Do In Richmond, Virginia

From our favorite dishes to the can't-miss outdoor attractions, use this local guide to plan your next visit to the River City.

Much of Richmond’s story is intertwined with that of our nation, making the Commonwealth’s capital city an obvious stop for history-loving travelers. But in 2024, the attractions that draw visitors and new residents to Richmond have less to do with landmarks and more to do with the thoughtful stewardship of its citizens. Decades of cleanup turned the James River into a showpiece for the city and an example for urban waterways across the country. As Richmond and its suburbs have grown, it’s still the locally owned bakeries, restaurants , and bars that draw long lines from residents. They’re passionate about their city and they know that this kind of preservation will keep its signature character for generations to come. Whether you plan to explore the Museum District, raft down the James, or eat your way through Church Hill, the locals will be happy to have you and share just what makes River City so special. Use our list of favorite activities to outline your next visit to Richmond, Virginia.

Get Outside

Experience the mighty james river.

Running from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Chesapeake Bay, the James River is not only one of Virginia’s greatest natural resources, but a celebrated playground for Richmond’s residents. Thanks to the James River Park System, visitors can enjoy the sights and sounds of the water through free trail access. Whether you enjoy fishing, bird watching, mountain biking, or nature walks, there’s no better way to understand the city’s heartbeat. Visit locally owned Riverside Outfitters when you’re ready to get out on the water itself. They host guided rafting and tubing adventures, from relaxing floats to Class IV rapid rides.

Get a Taste of the Gilded Age

In 1886, Richmond attorney James Dooley and his wife Sarah began plans for a 12,000-square-foot home, seated on a hill overlooking the James River. They named the finished 33-room mansion Maymont, and filled the surrounding 100 acres with an arboretum, an Italian garden, a Japanese garden, and a three-story stone barn. The Dooleys left their home to the city of Richmond and today you can explore the grounds that now include renovated gardens, a children’s farm and several habitats for rescue wildlife. Maymont Mansion is currently undergoing its largest renovation and will reopen for the holiday season in 2024, but the park is still open to the public where guests can attend outdoor events throughout the year.

Bike the Virginia Capital Trail

Stretching the 52 miles between Richmond and Jamestown, the Virginia Capital Trail is a paved, scenic greenway for pedestrians and cyclists. The route honors the history of capitals both past and present, but also gives active visitors a chance to enjoy the Commonwealth’s scenery at a thrilling clip. Whether you take an out-and-back route from Richmond or bike all the way east, make time for a stop on the veranda at Upper Shirley Vineyards . Located one-mile off the trail, bikers can refresh with a glass of wine, a laid-back lunch, and views of the bird sanctuary at Presquile National Wildlife Rescue .

Make Time for a Garden Tour

The classical domed conservatory and more than 50 acres of flowers draw visitors of all ages to the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden year round. With a cherry tree walk, a rose garden, a dedicated children’s area and educational programs to suit gardeners of every level, it’s no surprise that this outdoor escape continues to be one of the Richmond area’s most popular attractions. It’s worth coordinating your visit with the garden’s calendar , so you don’t miss events like the Virginia Daffodil Society Show, spring and fall plant sales, and December’s holiday light spectacular.

Hunt for Local Treasures

If you prefer activity of the retail variety, look no further than Carytown. Head to Mongrel for clever gifts and witty cards, browse the record selection at Plan 9 Music , and shop for one-of-a-kind apparel at Bygones Vintage . During your stroll, take a peek inside the Byrd Theater, a working 95-year-old cinema and national landmark. When it’s time for a break, park yourself at one of the window tables at CanCan Brasserie for French fare with a side of people watching.

Tour Richmond’s Oldest Neighborhood

See the view that named the city.

When you’re ready to pause and take in sights from a comfortable seat, head to Libby Hill Park in the historic Church Hill Neighborhood. Locals say that the city’s founder, William Byrd II, gave Richmond its name after the view reminded him of England’s Richmond Hill on the Thames River. While this riverfront vista is pretty on its own, it looks even better when you’re holding a chocolate croissant from celebrated local bakery Sub Rosa or for heartier lunchtime fare, a savory New Zealand-style pie from nearby Proper Pie Co.

Stand Where Revolution Began

History buffs can visit the St. John’s Church pew where Patrick Henry gave his “Give Me Liberty” speech, as part of the debates at the Second Virginia Convention in 1775. With an audience including future presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, these words influenced Virginia’s involvement in the Revolutionary War. The church is still active today, but hosts regular tours and spirited reenactments of the convention. The graveyard surrounding the church was Richmond’s first public cemetery and serves as the resting place for many early Virginians including Elizabeth Arnold Poe, the mother of Edgar Allen Poe.

The exhibits sit in Church Hill’s Old Stone House, the city’s oldest residential building that’s still standing today. Your museum ticket includes a tour of the Enchanted Garden and the Poe Shrine. These outdoor spaces were inspired by his poem, “To One in Paradise,” and they’ve attracted visits from cultural leaders including Gertrude Stein, Salvador Dali, and John Phillip Sousa.

Explore a Mile of Award-Winning Restaurants

It’s a poorly kept secret that some of the region’s best dishes are hiding out in this hilltop neighborhood. You’ll need reservations well in advance for most, but planning ahead will be worth it for steak-frites with staff-approved wine pairings at Grisette , the Siren’s Song seafood sampler at Alewife , or Southern favorites like cornbread and fried catfish inside the cozy Roosevelt dining room. Finish your meal with a scoop of New England-style ice cream at Spotty Dog or a creative nightcap at tropical cocktail bar, Emerald Lounge .

Celebrate Culture

Get a crash course in state history.

Where else can you see George Washington’s personal diary, Arthur Ashe’s tennis racket, and a pair of buttons attributed to Pocahantas, all in one stop? The Virginia Museum of History & Culture not only houses an impressive collection of artifacts and an extensive research library for public use, but they also host rotating exhibits highlighting the state’s unparalleled influence on the country. In 2024, visitors can tour a showcase on the Rosenwald schools, an early 20th century program that built educational infrastructure for Black children across 15 Southern states.

See Bunny Mellon’s Personal Art Collection

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts boasts a comprehensive body of both American and international art, but interior design enthusiasts will enjoy seeing the works donated from the personal gallery of Virginia residents Paul and Rachel “Bunny” Mellon. These include paintings by Picasso, Monet, and Renoir, sculpture by Degas, and Mrs. Mellon’s Schlumberger jewels. The always-free admission to the museum’s permanent exhibitions includes works by the Gee’s Bend Quilters of Alabama, the Rumors of War statue by Kehinde Wiley, and the largest Fabergé collection outside of Russia.

Walk Through the “Harlem of the South”

Join celebrated local guide Gary Flowers on a tour of Historic Jackson Ward. By 1920, this neighborhood on the north side of downtown was the thriving center of culture and commerce for Richmond’s Black residents. The community’s famed Hippodrome Theater attracted regular visits from Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington. Also known as “Black Wall Street,” Jackson Ward was home to Maggie L. Walker, the first woman in the United States to found and lead a bank. In the 1950s, the construction of the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike bisected the neighborhood and resulted in the destruction of many historic buildings. Mr. Flowers, a fourth-generation Jackson Ward resident, leads his 1.5 mile tours through 20 of the area’s most important landmarks.

Visit the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Central Virginia

While in Jackson Ward, head to the former Leigh Street Armory to learn more about the Black Virginians that shaped American culture. The interactive exhibits at the BHMVA share the important stories of NASCAR’S first Black driver Wendell Scott, American Civil Rights Attorney Oliver Hill, Tusekeegee Airman Howard Baugh, and the Richmond 34, a group of Virginia Union University Students who conducted a sit-in at Thalhimers department store. Don’t miss the contemporary art works as well, including an abstract sculpture that pays tribute to Hampton University’s famous Emancipation Oak.

Wine And Dine, Commonwealth Style

Toast a special occasion with champagne sunday brunch.

There’s Sunday brunch and then there’s the Jefferson Hotel’s Champagne Sunday Brunch. When you’re looking for a reservation that’s out of the ordinary, head down the iconic staircase for an unforgettable spread that includes oysters on the half shell, a carving station with Virginia ham, the hotel’s famous spoonbread, and a glittering array of colorful desserts. Often accompanied by live jazz music, this is a dining experience you won’t soon forget.

Acquaint Yourself With Richmond’s Best Brews

Virginia has centuries of hops history, but Richmond can claim the world’s first canned beer, invented by Kreuger Brewing Co. in 1935. Fast forward to 2012, and state legislation allowing producers to sell beer on premises inspired a wave of creative brewers to open taprooms in the River City. Today it’s hard for visitors to find themselves in a neighborhood without a brewery, but Scott’s Addition is the best place for aficionados to sample a few in a single trip. Highlights include Hardywood and their Gingerbread Stout, Starr Hill’s rooftop overlooking the neighborhood, and fruited ales at the Veil .

Sample Alpine Cuisine Without Leaving the South

Lucky for Richmonders, Top Chef contestant Brittanny Anderson chose to open her Alpine-influenced restaurant in the heart of her hometown. Bring friends to sample dishes like Gruyère and Emmentaler fondue, German flammkuchen, and cacio e pepe roasted oysters. If you’re ready to keep the fun going after dinner, head next door to sister concept, Black Lodge. Sip on classic cocktails and dressed-up Miller High Life Ponies, plus take a peek at their caviar and shot pairings.

Visit the Wine Bar That Will Make You Feel Like a Local

Step down into Jardin’s cozy basement-level wine shop and read the handwritten recommendations that accompany the bottle-filled shelves. If you’re having trouble deciding on a grape, head to the bar where the friendly staff is always eager to share a bit of sommelier knowledge and dish on their latest wine-related travel. While you can certainly take your carefully chosen bottle home with you, the outdoor patio is an ideal place to sip and take in the sights of Richmond’s fan neighborhood. Add a bit of their thoughtfully sourced charcuterie to the equation and you’re in for a lovely afternoon.

Dig Into Soul Food Favorites at Mama J’s

If you’re looking for authentic soul food, visit Velma Johnson’s family-run restaurant in Jackson Ward. Nicknamed Mama J by her daughters-in-law, Velma has been sharing the dishes of her Richmond childhood with eager patrons for more than a decade. The fried chicken is a local favorite, but save room for side dishes like candied yams and macaroni and cheese. Even the cocktail names, like Grandpa’s Spiked Tea, underscore the familial ties running through this downtown restaurant.

Pay Homage to an Italian Institution

When locals are craving Italian fare like eggplant parmigiana and spaghetti with clams, they climb to the second story of an unassuming building near Virginia Commonwealth University. Edo’s Squid attracts visitors from all over the mid-atlantic to enjoy authentic, family-style dishes from the perch of its laidback dining room. Don’t assume you can simply open an app on your phone and reserve a table. Hopeful diners will need to call between the hours of 3PM and 5PM or stop by in person to make a reservation, but the plates at Edo’s are always worth the extra effort.

Try the Family Recipes of a Greek Matriarch

After emigrating to the United States in the 1960s, Stella Dikos began working the line at her husband’s Village Cafe in Richmond, serving both American classics and traditional Greek dishes. Twenty years later, she opened her namesake restaurant that continues to be a highlight in the city’s dining scene today. Start your meal with keftedes (lamb and beef meatballs), dolmades, and spanakopita, but be sure to plan ahead for dessert. The house-made baklava, served with an optional scoop of ice cream, shouldn’t be missed.

Eat Your Way Through a Food Tour

Not enough time to visit all of the restaurants on your list? Set aside an afternoon for a Richmond Food Tour. With stops at five to six establishments, you can get a taste for one neighborhood’s famous dishes (Carytown, Church Hill, and the Arts District) or try the city’s best pizza and ice cream with a cuisine-focused outing. In true Richmond fashion, many of the neighborhood tours include an historic landmark on the side.

Enjoy The State’s Architecture

Tour the nation’s oldest purpose-built governor’s residence.

Completed in 1813 for Governor James Barbour, the Virginia Executive Mansion has been the home for the state’s first family ever since. Though it was renovated and expanded throughout the twentieth century, the home still reflects its original federal style designed by Boston architect Alexander Parris. The grounds include a greenhouse where produce is grown for the kitchen’s daily use, a 1950s symmetrical garden by Richmond landscape architect Charles Gilette, and the Valentine-Jackson Memorial Garden, honoring the enslaved families that lived and worked at the residence. Plaques on the walls of this garden feature letters that members of the Valentine and Jackson families wrote to their relatives in Abingdon, Virginia. The Executive Mansion is open every Tuesday and Friday for tours, and no appointment is necessary. Simply approach the gatehouse and let the guard know that you’re interested in seeing the home.

Walk By the Fan’s Grand Mansions and Row Houses

If you’re in the mood for a walking tour, start near the Branch Museum of Architecture & Design and peer at the early 20th century homes that line Monument Avenue. Heading towards the quaint Meadow Park, you’ll soon see bright row houses come into view, sure to influence your front door’s next color. For true exterior eye candy, head back up on Hanover or Grove Avenues where you’ll see well-manicured gardens and porches, in addition to artsy spins on seasonal decor. This neighborhood comes alive during Halloween, when residents’ enthusiastic displays attract trick-or-treaters from all over the city.

See an English Manor House, No Passport Required

Rather than starting from scratch to build their dream home in 1925, Alexander and Virginia Weddel purchased a 16th century monastery in Warwick, England. They had the stone building shipped over to Richmond in parts before beginning construction on the soon-to-be Virginia House. Upon completion, the Tudor-style home was deeded to the Virginia Historical Society and the organization maintains the house as a museum today. Visitors can see Mrs. Weddell’s opulent decor, including fine china and silver, plus tour eight acres of gardens on the James River.

Make Plans to Visit During Virginia Historic Garden Week

For visitors interested in the interiors and architecture of present-day Richmonders, mark your calendar for the Garden Club of Virginia’s full week of home tours. While this unique collaboration between the Commonwealth’s 48 clubs spans the state, the 2024 schedule includes three days of Richmond houses. Between the Westover Hills and Windsor Farms neighborhoods, you can tour contemporary rebuilds, Georgian revivals, and elegant gardens with meticulous detail.

Oak Grove Cemetery Tours

Dare you wander into the Oak Grove Cemetery? Here, the stones whisper stories of Mannie Saunders Cobb, the unsettling echoes of Huntington Row, the spectral Civil War soldiers, the cemetery’s own haunting legends, the tragic Della Barnes, the lost soul of Reuben Saunders, and the devastating echoes of the great flood.

Our haunted jaunts of Downtown Ghost Tours commence on October 28 & 29 with tours embarking on their chilling journeys at 6:15 PM, 7:30 PM, and 8:45 PM. Additional treks into the spectral night may be added upon demand.

Tickets for this thrilling expedition into the paranormal are priced at $18 for adults and $10 for daring young explorers above the age of 8. Please note, the chilling nature of our tour may not be suitable for children under 8. Our tours are an exclusive affair, limited to only the first 10 brave souls. The ghostly trail through downtown covers an eerie 3/4-mile stretch within a haunting 5-block radius, leading us to the spectral riverfront, and lasting approximately an hour.

Heed the clock as our spectral journeys begin right on the stroke of the designated hour and are accessible by wheelchair. Rain or shine, our tours march on into the spectral twilight. Bring a jacket to fend off the chill of the night, an umbrella to ward off the elements, and comfortable shoes for the journey. We look forward to your daring presence as we uncover the spectral secrets of Paducah.

Punch your Ticket! – The Durham Museum’s River City History Tours kick-off May 8

Join The Durham Museum for another exciting season of River City History Tours! These popular tours depart from The Durham Museum aboard Ollie the Trolley and explore topics like women in Omaha, the city’s infamous bootlegging history, the original “Gold Coast” neighborhood and more. Tours cost $25 for museum members and $30 for non-members and all tours last between 90 minutes to 2 hours. Membership discount applies only to those in the household. Reserve your seat today at www.DurhamMuseum.org/Tours or by calling 402-444-5027.

Select from these six unique tours throughout the season.

From Expositions to Jazz Musicians Tour offered: July 17 and September 4 In 1898, Omaha hosted the Trans-Mississippi & International Exposition, an event that brought millions to visit Omaha and learn about life west of the Mississippi River. Visit the former site of the expo and see the stately homes, parks and jazz halls that followed in its path. Plus, enjoy a stop at the historic Florence Mill!

Last Call for Alcohol: Omaha’s Bootlegging History Tour offered: June 12, July 12 and September 25 By the time prohibition was the law of the land in the U.S., Nebraska had been “dry” for two years and organized crime syndicates had established a well-oiled machine to turn profits. Local and federal authorities spent years putting together a case that ultimately brought down the “kingpin” of Omaha’s crime scene, Tom Dennison. This tour, based on Dennison’s 1931 federal indictment, takes a look at hotels, speakeasys and other key locations in prohibition-era Omaha.

Millionaires & Mansions – North Gold Coast Tour offered: June 26, August 28 and October 2 Explore the neighborhoods north of Dodge Street in mid-town Omaha. Along the way, learn about the Mercer Mansion, Joslyn Castle and the Louis Nash residence. The trolley will drive on the first curved street in the city and visitors will see many stately homes in the original “West Omaha.”

Millionaires & Mansions – South Gold Coast Tour offered: May 22, July 24 and September 18 Take a trip to the early 1900s in the area south of Dodge Street in mid-town Omaha. Many landmarks in the city are located here including the Blackstone Hotel, the Storz Mansion and the home of Arthur and Zerlina Brandeis. Visitors will see the beauty of traditional architecture and hear the stories of the people who built these magnificent homes.

Omaha’s Parks and Boulevards Tour offered: June 5, September 13 and October 16 Did you know that Omaha developed a beautiful parks and boulevard system beginning in the late 1800s? In fact, much of this system remains today linking popular parks like Elmwood and Hanscom with gorgeous tree-lined streets such as Happy Hollow and Lincoln Boulevard. The “Parks and Boulevards” tour will take you along the beautiful path these developers laid out so many years ago.

Remember the Ladies! The Women of Early Omaha Tour offered: May 8, August 16 and October 9 Hop on a trolley with us in honor of the founding ladies of Omaha. This tour will introduce you to a few of Omaha’s first women, from factory workers and business owners to religious leaders and activists, who contributed to the growth and success of Omaha today. Destinations on this tour will include driving through Omaha’s previous “Red Light District”, the Paxton Hotel, Saint Cecelia’s Cathedral and so much more!

Paris Olympics: See the venues of the Summer Games

This summer's Olympics will unfold in more than 30 venues throughout Paris and other cities throughout France. This story is best viewed on mobile in the NBC News app .

by Chet Hill, Jiachuan Wu and Nigel Chiwaya

This browser does not support the video element.

The Olympics will transform Paris, with dozens of competitions and events expected to draw huge crowds to one of the world’s most iconic cities. Take a tour of some of the Games’ more noteworthy venues.

The River Seine, which flows through the heart of Paris, will be a central location throughout the Games.

The Seine will be the site of the opening ceremony on July 26, when 10,000 athletes aboard more than 160 boats will parade on the water in front of crowds of up to 300,000. In the following weeks, swimming, triathlon, 3-on-3 basketball, skateboarding and gymnastics competitions will also be held at venues along the river.

Beach volleyball will be played at a temporary stadium, currently under construction, in the Champ de Mars near the Eiffel Tower.

The Eiffel Tower Stadium will offer a spectacular view of one of Paris’ most iconic landmarks.

Judo and wrestling competitions will take place at a temporary arena in the Champ de Mars.

The arena will be dismantled after the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Olympic village lies along the Seine’s northern bank and will house more than 20,000 athletes during the Olympics and Paralympic Games combined.

The village is located about a mile away from Stade de France, which will serve as the main Olympic stadium and host major events such as rugby, shot put and track and field.

The Roland Garros Stadium, built in 1928 in western Paris, is traditionally the home of the annual French Open tennis tournament.

During the Paris Olympics, the Roland Garros will host tennis, boxing, wheelchair tennis and sitting volleyball competitions.

The Olympics are not limited to Paris, as events will take place in other French cities, too. Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes and Nice will host soccer games. Sailing competitions will take place at the Marseille marina, and Villeneuve-d’Ascq in northern France will host basketball and handball competitions.

The farthest event of the Games will take place almost 10,000 miles away, in the French Polynesian island of Tahiti.

Teahupo’o, which is home to some of the biggest waves on the planet, will host surfing competitions.
