The Russian State Ballet & Orchestra of Siberia

russian state ballet tour 2023

Russia’s acclaimed ballet company returns to the UK – On tour January – February 2017

Performed by The Russian State Ballet of Siberia and accompanied by The Orchestra of the Russian State Ballet.

Sergei Bobrov – Artistic Director

Anatoly Tchepurnoi – Music Director and Chief Conductor

RSBoS2017

Formed in 1981, The Russian State Ballet of Siberia has become established as one of Russia’s leading ballet companies. Under the artistic directorship of Sergei Bobrov, dancers from across Russia have forged their skills and artistry performing an expanding repertoire of new works and exceptional productions of timeless classics. The soloists and corps de ballet are outstanding, delighting audiences with their breath-taking physical ability and beautiful costumes as each storyline unfolds to the live accompaniment of the Russian State Ballet Orchestra of Siberia. The company comprises over 40 dancers and 30 musicians.

Commenting on the tour, Sergei Bobrov said ‘It is always a pleasure to bring the unique traditions of Russian Ballet to British audiences. Touring with a full company of dancers as well as highly skilled musicians is always exciting; for me, it is very special to have the power of a symphony orchestra bringing the choreography to life on stage.’

La Fille mal gardée

Recreated by Alexander Gorsky, this remains one of the oldest ballets still regularly performed. A gentle tale of love thwarted, unrequited and found. It is a masterpiece of comedy, with plenty of ribbons, romance and rivalry. La Fille mal gardée conjures up a world of pastoral simplicity where a farm boy woos a flirty farmer’s daughter and they find inventive ways to avoid her mother. Complete with virtuoso pas de deux, maypole and clog dances, this classic ballet will send you home happy, delighting those enjoying it for the very first time as well as those who want to see it again and again.

Every toy has a story, especially in this charming comedy of errors, a witty combination of antics and abracadabra, set in a doll maker’s workshop. This light-hearted tale of mistaken identity and confused lovers follows mischievous Swanilda, her impetuous suitor Franz and the eccentric toymaker Dr.Coppelius as they are brought to life by sparkling choreography and the animated score of Delibes. Coppélia is perfect for first-time ballet goers, families and everyone in between.

The greatest romantic ballet of all time is brought to life by Tchaikovsky’s haunting and unforgettable score. From the impressive splendour of the Palace ballroom to the moon-lit lake where swans glide in perfect formation, this compelling tale of tragic romance has it all. From Odile, the temptress in black tulle as she seduces the Prince by spinning with captivating precision to the spellbound purity of the swan queen, Odette as she flutters with emotional intensity, the dual role of Odette/Odile is one of ballet’s most unmissable technical challenges.

The Nutcracker

This most famous of fantasy ballets for all the family begins as night falls on Christmas Eve. As snowflakes fall outside, the warm glow of the open fire sends flickering shadows across the boughs of the Christmas tree and all the presents beneath. When midnight strikes we are swept away to a fairy tale world where nothing is quite as it seems, toy dolls spring to life, the Mouse King and his mouse army battle with the Nutcracker Prince and we travel through the Land of Snow to an enchanted place where the magic really begins…

This, the most poignant of all classical ballets is filled with dramatic passion in a chilling and heart-rending tale of love, treachery and forgiveness from beyond the grave. The moving story of delicate Giselle and her aristocratic but duplicitous lover Albrecht is set to a glorious score. From the visual splendour of the rustic villagers happily gathering the harvest at the start of the story to the eerie moonlit forest haunted by beautifully drifting spirits, this production is unforgettable.

State Ballet Theatre of Ukraine’s Annual North American Tour Feels Different This Year

russian state ballet tour 2023

State Ballet Theatre of Ukraine, founded in 2018 and hosted by Classical Arts in Brooklyn, New York, is a 55-member troupe of Ukrainian dancers who come together each year to perform in North America. In what has become an annual tradition, the company has toured its productions of The Nutcracker , Sleeping Beauty , Swan Lake and other classics throughout the U.S. and Canada since its founding. But this year, things are different. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last February, eyes have turned toward the Eastern European nation and its displaced people, including its dancers. For SBTU, that meant a sudden increase in attention—not only from U.S. audiences, but also from local ballet students who are invited to join the company onstage each year.

Former ballroom dancer Ekaterina Vaganova-Yachmennikova heads SBTU student engagement alongside her husband, Artem Yachmennikoff, a former San Francisco Ballet and Dutch National Ballet principal, Mariinsky Ballet soloist and Bolshoi Ballet first soloist. In addition to their positions as co-artistic directors of the company, they also own and direct their own studio, We Dance Academy , in Melbourne, Florida and Viera, Florida. The two got involved with Classical Arts in 2018 with the creation of the organization’s “We Dance” program , which facilitates the local student involvement with SBTU at each touring location. And while the program has always experienced consistent participation, Vaganova-Yachmennikova was blown away by the number of auditioning students for the 2022–23 season.

Six female dancers, a mix of professionals from State Ballet Theatre of Ukraine and local New Jersey students, pose onstage in the "Sleeping Beauty" Prologue fairy scene. They wear bright colored tutus in warm hues, pink tights and pointe shoes, fairy wings and tiaras. Other dancers in pink tutus pose behind them in the background.

“The auditions are open for the entire community,” she says, explaining that she and Yachmennikoff work with local host studios to audition area dancers ages 3 and up, including adult ballet students. “At New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), we have a school that last year got 20 dancers to participate, and this year there are 45. There are over 100 total dancers onstage!”

Vaganova-Yachmennikova (who traces her ancestry back to the legendary Agrippina Vaganova) notes the significance of the performance opportunities for young dancers in the U.S. “It’s a unique cultural exchange; they get a global experience and appreciation for working with artists from different backgrounds,” she says, emphasizing that observing how professionals work onstage and performing alongside them is critical for students who want to dance professionally themselves. And for the theaters involved, the company’s annual tours have generated a strong connection over the years. NJPAC executive vice president and executive producer David Rodriguez notes that the Center’s relationship with SBTU goes back several years; the company’s performances, he says, “creates an opportunity to view a single seminal work in a variety of cultural contexts not available elsewhere.”

Vaganova-Yachmennikova explains that this year’s tour is particularly special to SBTU and is thrilled that several theaters have sold out their performances through February. “Dancers already have a very short artistic life,” she says. “Our priority has to be the human life. So the fact that they are able to continue to do their job is priceless given the surrounding circumstances.” Hundreds of people have also shown their support through donations on the Classical Arts website , which goes toward funding SBTU productions and helping the displaced artists and their families.

Artem Yachmennikoff, Ekaterina Vaganova-Yachmennikova, members of State Ballet Theatre of Ukraine and local ballet students clap onstage during bows after the SBToU performance of "Sleeping Beauty." Artem wears a black tuxedo, Ekaterina wears a long red dress, and the dancers are in costume as the audience applauds in the foreground.

But the company’s success this year was not met without difficulty. The task of covertly rehearsing in Ukraine and transporting company members, sets and costumes out of the country was not an easy one—and it was risky. “These dancers were forced to leave their homes, and even their families,” says Vaganova-Yachmennikova, “and we have to keep our location in Ukraine undisclosed. But now in the U.S., they’re able to live in some sort of normality; they don’t have to wake up to the sound of sirens.”

The main thing she wishes for North American audiences? To come and see the dancers live. “We are so very appreciative and excited to bring the holiday spirit to these audiences. And we’re hopeful that with love and faith, these crazy times will end soon.”

From Odile, the temptress in black tutu as she seduces the Prince by spinning with captivating precision to the spellbound purity of the swan queen, Odette, as she flutters with emotional intensity, the dual role of Odette/Odile is one of ballet’s most unmissable technical challenges.

The Nutcracker

This most famous of fantasy ballets for all the family begins as night falls on Christmas Eve. As snowflakes fall outside, the warm glow of the open fire sends flickering shadows across the boughs of the Christmas tree and all the presents beneath. When midnight strikes we are swept away to a fairytale world where nothing is quite as it seems, toy dolls spring to life, the Mouse King and his mouse army battle with the Nutcracker Prince and we travel through the Land of Snow to an enchanted place where the magic really begins…

Snow Maiden

Protected from the outside world by Father Frost, the exquisite Snow Maiden plays innocently amongst the dancing snowflakes in the enchanted Land of Frost. Based on a traditional folk-tale, set in the snow covered landscape of rural Russia, this seasonal sparkler follows the Snow Maiden as she dances into the human world. Captivated by the colourful village and the people who live there, she ventures too far and is swept up by feelings of love, temptation and betrayal. When finally she surrenders herself completely and warms to love, her heart melts in a tragic embrace.

Romeo and Juliet

Shakespeare’s tale of primal passion and timeless tragedy is brought to life by Prokofiev’s soaring score, set in bustling Renaissance Verona and with an emotionally charged choreography that befits the world’s greatest love story. From the grandeur of the masked ball to the intimacy of the lovers’ balcony, this star-crossed story of duels, bitter family feuds and love that cannot be, is unmissable.

The world’s favourite rags to riches fairy-tale where dreams can come true is a magical mix of Prokofiev’s energetic score, lively choreography and colourful costumes. Whilst her mad/bad stepmother and her ill-mannered daughters prepare for the Royal Ball, graceful Cinderella can only dream of dancing with the dashing Prince. Later that evening, her rags become a glittering gown and she is swept magically to the Ball. From that very moment the Prince is smitten, midnight strikes and one lost crystal slipper later, he must now embark on a journey to find his lost love….

The Russian State Ballet of Siberia was formed in 1978 by talented graduates from choreographic schools in Moscow, St Petersburg, Kiev, Novosibirsk and Yekaterinburg. Russian classical and folkloric ballet is definitely a top-notch. However, Russian ballet tickets are not an easy task for the foreigner.

The theatre ticket market in Russia is a tough one – with official higher prices for foreigners, huge black-market, intermediaries, who charge twice as much for their services and scammers, who sell you false tickets to the most popular performances.

But there is one even worse thing. Russian theatre-tickets are far from being online. The number of respectable websites, selling theatre tickets in English language is very limited. None of them is user-friendly.

We are professionals in getting the best tickets for you. However we do not only sell the tickets, but provide you with tons of information about performances, so that you can make your own choice. The UK season launches with performances from 18 December 2021, and will tour throughout the UK from January to March, with venue dates in Basingstoke, Blackpool, Bournemouth, Brighton, Bristol, Buxton, Darlington, Edinburgh, High Wycombe, Hull, Ipswich, Leicester, Liverpool, Northampton, Nottingham, Manchester, Oxford, Peterborough, Reading, Sheffield, Southend, Wimbledon and Wolverhampton. See the full schedule below.

The Russian State Ballet of Siberia – led by  Artistic Director Sergei Bobrov , and  Music Director Anatoly Tchepurnoi  – has established itself as one of Russia’s leading ballet companies and has built an international reputation for delivering performances of outstanding quality and depth. Since their first Christmas season at St David’s Hall in Cardiff in 2002, the Company has completed 18 UK ballet tours and has had success in Italy, Spain, Slovakia, Japan, Turkey, Bulgaria, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates and Singapore.

Sergei Bobrov said ahead of the Russian ballet UK tour, “ I am delighted to return to the UK this year.  The response of audiences wherever the company performs is overwhelming.  We can’t wait to be back on stage in front of UK audiences once again .”

The ballets to be performed this season are:

The greatest romantic ballet of all time is brought to life by Tchaikovsky’s haunting and unforgettable score. From the impressive splendour of the Palace ballroom to the moon-lit lake where swans glide in perfect formation, this compelling tale of tragic romance has it all.

From that very moment the Prince is smitten, midnight strikes and one lost crystal slipper later, he must now embark on a journey to find his lost l ove….

  • General information

Russian National Ballet

Saint Petersburg is the birthplace of Russian ballet : an emblematic symbol of the country's culture and a dance that has infiltrated countries the world over.

This dance had already been developed previously in Italy, specifically during the Renaissance, an age when dance experienced a progressive development alongside other arts, such as painting and sculpture.

Origins of Russian Ballet

Ballet originated in Italy in the 15th and 16th centuries, but it wasn't until  Peter the Great  came into power in the 17th century and began opening the Russian Empire up to Western culture and influence that ballet became known in the country, with the first performance taking place in 1673. Intrinsically linked to the political, social and cultural changes that were taking place at the time, the dance's arrival in Russia marks a key point in the country's history .

Thanks to patronage by the tsars and the influence of ballet teachers from France and Italy, ballet quickly became the most popular form of entertainment of the Russian nobility . Under the orders of Catherine the Great, an Imperial ballet troupe was established in St Petersburg in 1783 , and it was moved to the famous Mariinsky Theatre in 1886.

While the renowned  Bolshoi Ballet   was founded in Moscow in 1776, making it one of the oldest ballet companies in the world,  St Petersburg remained the "ballet capital" of Russia  with its  Imperial Russian Ballet , these days known as the  Mariinsky Ballet .

A new dance

With the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the new wave spreading to the east across the continent, a new way of interpreting dance also took to the stage.

Choreographers opted for more fluid movements and reinterpreted Europe's most classical dances.

During these years, the main aims of ballet were the opening, reinterpretation and improvement of the practice of dance, ideas that make the dance the main artistic representation of the whole nation.

A theatre with history

One of the most important monuments in St Petersburg is the Mariinsky Theatre, home of the Russian Ballet and the headquarters of one of the most prestigious ballet companies in the world.

The historical centre of theatre, dance and opera in Russia, St Peterburg is like Paris, Vienna and Rome: one of the most important cultural heritage cities in all of Europe.

As well as its own ballet company, the Mariinsky Theatre also has its own orchestra, one of the oldest musical institutions in all of Russia.

Russian Ballet in St Petersburg

To truly get a feel for the internationally acclaimed Russian ballet , the best thing to do is to attend a performance during your trip to Saint Petersburg. Experience this important cultural show at one of the city's most famous theatres!

The Russian State Ballet of Siberia back on stage and touring The UK

Celebrating two decades since the first uk tour in 2002.

Raymond Gubbay Limited has announced that The Russian State Ballet of Siberia, accompanied by the Russian State Ballet Orchestra, are back on stage and touring the UK in 2022 with their iconic performances of The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Snow Maiden, Cinderella and Romeo And Juliet , all brought to life with magical special effects.

This season marks the twentieth anniversary of the company’s first season in the UK, with their work first presented at St David’s Hall in Cardiff in 2002.

Whilst the challenges of the omicron variant and Welsh government restrictions meant that the first Cardiff dates of the tour were not able to go ahead in December 2021 as planned, the company were able to launch the tour afresh with Swan Lake in Manchester in early January, and are now delighting audiences around the country once again.

The company will tour the UK until the end of March, and will visit Basingstoke, Bournemouth, Brighton, Bristol, Darlington, Edinburgh, High Wycombe, Hull, Ipswich, Leicester, Liverpool, Northampton, Nottingham, Oxford, Reading, Southend, Wimbledon and Wolverhampton.

The Russian State Ballet of Siberia – led by Artistic Director Sergei Bobrov, and Music Director Anatoly Tchepurnoi – has established itself as one of Russia’s leading ballet companies and has built an international reputation for delivering performances of outstanding quality and depth. Since their first Christmas season at St David’s Hall in Cardiff in 2002, the Company has completed 18 UK tours and has had success in Italy, Spain, Slovakia, Japan, Turkey, Bulgaria, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates and Singapore.

60 dancers who fled the war now take the stage — as The United Ukrainian Ballet

When Russia invaded Ukraine, choreographer Alexei Ratmansky was in Moscow working with both the Bolshoi and the Mariinsky, historically two of the most revered ballet companies in the world.

"My wife called me at 5:00 am from New York and said: Kyiv has been bombed," he remembers. He and his wife both have family in Ukraine, "so I had to leave right away," he says.

Ratmansky is a highly sought-after choreographer and a 2013 MacArthur Fellow. He choreographed The United Ukrainian Ballet's production of Giselle, which just began its run at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. His mother is Russian. His father is Ukrainian. But he isn't giving anyone in Russia a pass for not speaking out, including his fellow artists.

"It's a huge failure of Russian culture, I think, the fact that millions didn't come out the first week and didn't stop it," he says before the dress rehearsal for Giselle at The Kennedy Center . "It breaks my heart to see that the world of today cannot stop this horror."

Some 60 dancers who fled the war make up The United Ukrainian Ballet . With help from local dance professionals and city officials, the company is based in The Hague.

A ballet dancer's career is short, and interrupting rigorous daily classes can be a setback. Despite the dire circumstances under which the company was formed, it has also allowed these dancers to continue their profession.

For principal dancer Elizaveta Gogidze, the chance to work with Ratmansky was "a dream." Gogidze, who performs the lead in Giselle , was a soloist with the National Opera of Ukraine in Kyiv when the war began. Along with her mother, her grandmothers and "all the women of our family," Gogidze fled to Germany, where her aunt was living.

When a dancer friend told her about the formation of The United Ukrainian Ballet in the Netherlands and Ratmansky's involvement, she was on her way to The Hague.

"It's a chance to do something new and to learn something new," she beams, "He's a gorgeous choreographer. He's a true patriot of our country."

Gogidze says she's in constant contact with her fellow dancers back in Kyiv. Her company, The National Opera of Ukraine, has reopened, but it's been a challenge. "They have no light. They have no hot water. Sirens and rockets sometimes. It's really hard," she says. It's not lost on the Ukrainian government that the audience for this event includes decision-makers. The Kennedy Center and the U.S. State Department recently hosted a 60th anniversary celebration of the Art in Embassies program. One of the dancers with The United Ukrainian Ballet performed a solo piece called The Dying Swan.

Ukrainian Ambassador Oksana Markarova told members of the Washington establishment that she and others at the embassy have had "very difficult discussions" about whether, "during a full-fledged war, to continue our events ... with art, with songs, with art exhibitions." She said they decided that not to continue would be "exactly what Russians wanted us to do."

"They wanted us to be destroyed, cry and die. And we will not do that," said Ambassador Markarova, "We will not give up. We will not surrender. We will fight bravely on the battlefield. But we will also celebrate our culture."

Ratmansky proudly shares a bit of his conversation with the Ambassador: "She said the Ukrainian ballet operates as our secret weapon. And I like that."

When the performance of Giselle ended, the orchestra played the Ukrainian national anthem. The dancers, joined by Ratmansky, sang and held up banners that said "Stand With Ukraine."

A previous version of this story said the Kennedy Center hosted a 60th anniversary celebration of the Art in Embassies program. It should have said that it was co-hosted by the U.S. State Department. In addition, the story incorrectly said The Dying Swan was from Swan Lake .
