Timeless Morocco

Just returned from the Timeless Morocco tour 3 days ago and I wish I could turn around and do it all over again. This tour was even better than I hoped it would be. The itinerary is perfect. We did a lot in Marrakesh, fully experienced the desert camping with camels in the Sahara, enjoyed more than enough time in Chefchaouen, and had time to do something in every other city along the way. There were a lot of interesting stops and beautiful vistas between each city as well, making the time between each destination a lot of fun too. The riads were beautiful and the hospitality and service was outstanding. Everything was effortless and smooth thanks to tour guide, Yassin and driver, Jamal. Yassin taught us a lot about the history of the country and its customs and traditions- we loved his history lesson! He was very knowledgeable and happy to answer all of our many questions. He also did a great job of keeping us informed throughout the trip so we were always prepared for our next activity. He and Jamal kept everything running smoothly- they have it down to a science. I am already highly recommending this tour to everyone I know who loves to travel. I don’t even have any suggestions for improvement, it was perfect!

The tour was totally fantastic! Very well and carefully organized, with whatsapp support and smooth transportation from one location to another. We were lucky with the weather and a low touristic season which made the tour even better as we could enjoy all the beautiful spots almost alone. Special thanks to the guides and drivers who showed us all the best places , shared many tips and tricks and were very welcoming and knowledgable. karim and hassan were real heroes. The hotels were meeting all my expectations, offering nice rooms and great food. It was pretty cold at night in the desert camp, but we came prepared with warm clothes so it was fine. We keep telling and recommending the tour to all our friends!

Totally Morocco Tour from Casablanca

Great tour, enjoyed really enjoyed myself. The various local guides at the different locales were very knowledgeable and provided good information of the area Shoutout to our guide Tarik and driver Mohammad who ensure the whole tour went about smoothly A few points to improve, the location of the Hotel in Casablanca was not ideal. The one In Tangier was pretty bad as it was quite a distance from town. Main problem with both is lack of food options near the hotel in the evening. Accommodations during the rest of the tour was great

The tour and tour guides were fantastic. There was so much to see and the explanations were excellent. The accommodation was overall poor although the hotel Adam Park in Marrakech was good and the riad in Rabat was good with a helpful and friendly manager. Other hotels were pretty poor and hotel manager in Fez was very unfriendly and unhelpful. The tour is advertised as 4 star hotel. I don't think that these as 4 star, maybe 3 stars other than Adam Park. On the other hand, the tours, transport and organization was excellent. The tour guide, Brahim was exceptional and made things easy for us. Would recommend the tour if someone is happy with 3 star not great accomodation

Tour was bursting with activities. Hotels so so especially the hotel in Marakkech. Room and towels smell of cigarettes, no lights in shower tub, no fan or AC in the room. Tour is value for the money. Tour is very suitable for fun loving young people. would have preferred better accommodation at the Sahara Desert. Inside the tents felt like a sauna during the day and night it was like a freezer. Overall good experience.

5 day trip: Sahara Fun Outdoor Experience

We had to pick one of the several desert companies in Morocco. thankfully we made the right choice in selecting Touareg Trails for our 5-day vacation. The essential standards were their excellent rating and the large choice of activities they provided. Everything was well arranged from the moment we arrived, and every activity on the program had been fulfilled. Driving through the mountains was exhilarating, sleeping in the Sahara desert was lovely, and the hot air balloon flight above Marrakech's rocky desert was definitely unforgettable. I can certainly suggest this crew to all of my Moroccan friends, as well as anybody looking for an incredible desert vacation.

Overall, the tour was good. Abdoul and our bus driver were amazing. You do spend a lot of time on a bus - more than I anticipated. The hotels were all above average and better than I expected. The hotel breakfasts were great, but the other meals that were included (such as the 2 lunches and dinners) were minimal and repetitive. I am glad I got a taste of Morocco through this tour, and would definitely return in the future.

Best time to visit morocco.

The climate in Morocco varies wildly according to the season and area of travel. In the lowlands, the cooler months from October to April are popular among visitors. This time of year is pleasantly warm to hot (around 86°F) during the day and cool to cold (around 59°F) at night. Winter in the higher regions often brings snow and can therefore get seriously cold, particularly at night. Tourists flock to the coastline from June to September for fun in the sun, with warm mostly rain-free days. Further inland it can get hot and rain is rare, which makes the best times to travel March to June and September to December. As a Muslim country, Morocco observes Ramadan. If you are planning to go on holiday in Morocco during Ramadan, it is important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours during this time.

Culture and customs

Morocco's culture has developed over centuries of influence from far and wide. Contemporary Morocco is a fascinating mix of Berber, Mediterranean, Andalucian and African traditions, which are present in the cuisine, clothing, music, language, customs and lifestyle. As an Islamic country, most Moroccans are Muslim; however, there are small populations of people who practice Judaism and Christianity. Classic examples of Islamic architecture can be observed all throughout the country and tenets of the Islamic religion are carried out in the customs and lives of the people. The 'Call to Prayer' can be heard five times a day, women are expected to dress modestly and alcohol isn't drunk by most of the population.

Most of Moroccan society can be considered traditional, with respect for elders, connection to family, and giving alms to the poor hallmarks of everyday life for many Moroccans. Hospitality is another important element of society, with warmly welcoming people into your home a time-honored tradition and social responsibility that dates back centuries.

These slow-cooked stews are synonymous with Moroccan cooking. Chicken, olive, and citrus are well-known favorites, but there are endless variations using different meats, vegetables, and seasonings.

2. Couscous

Forget instant cous cous and try the real deal in Morocco. Often served with vegetables and meat, regional varieties sometimes also include everything from sweet raisins to spicy harissa or smoky almonds.

History and government

Early history.

The land now known as Morocco has been inhabited for centuries, with Moroccan civilization being known for its richness in history and culture. Centuries of foreign trade, invasion, and dynastic rule have given Morocco many different cultural influences that are evident in today's society. From the Phoenicians who entered Morocco via the Mediterranean in the 6th century BC, to the Roman influence of 40 AD and the formation of Islamic Morocco in the years after, Morocco has evolved with the rise and fall of dynasties, formation and dissolution of empires and the birth of new governments, movements, and ways of living. Reaching its height under the Berber Dynasties of the 11th and 12th centuries (the Almoravids, Almohads, Marinids, and Wattasids), Morocco subsequently fell to Arab tribes in 1559. The current royal family are descendants of the Alaouite Dynasty who have largely ruled since the 1600s, despite enduring a few crises in the 18th and 19th centuries, mainly in relation to European influence in the area and surrounding countries.

Recent history

With the signing of the Treaty of Fez, Morocco was declared a protectorate of France in 1912 with Spain being allocated control of parts of Morocco, mainly in the north and south. European control was generally opposed by Moroccan citizens, with the people of Rif attempting to establish a separatist republic in 1921. Decades of opposition continued, with rioting and protests leading to increased political tension. In 1955, the road to Moroccan independence was paved by Mohammed V who negotiated reforms and the restoration of independence. By 1956, France had relinquished its protectorate of Morocco and in 1957, Mohammed V became king. In 1961, Hassan II assumed the title of King of Morocco and continued to rule until his death in 1999. His son, Mohammed VI, took over the mantle of king in 1999 and continues to rule today.

The name 'Essaouira' means image, appropriate since its charm is undeniable. Within the stone ramparts, you'll find art galleries, wood workshops and whitewashed houses with bright blue shutters. Portuguese, British and Jewish influences all mingle in this artist's town.

Fes is the cultural heart of Morocco and home to some of its most iconic sights. Feel every sense come alive in the medina. Shops, dye pits and mosques all vie for space and you're as likely to see a donkey as a car.

5. High Atlas Mountains

6. Todra Gorge

7. Moulay Idriss

The small Medina of ancient Moulay Idriss was once forbidden to non-Muslims. Now it is a pleasure to explore as the faithful gather to pay homage to the founding father of Islam in Morocco at the 8th-century mausoleum.

8. Ait Benhaddou

Perfectly preserved, this is one of Morocco's most picturesque kasbahs. Centuries ago it was a stop for caravans as they carried salt across the Sahara. Today, it is inhabited only by a handful of families and the odd film crew.

9. Casablanca

The very name conjures up images of war-time romance. But the real romance of Casablanca must be its French influences and the beautiful Hassan II mosque, the largest in Morocco.

10. Volubilis

Do some time travel and visit the ancient hilltop city of Volubilis, one of the Roman Empire's most remote bases. The ruins here are beautifully preserved and it's easy to believe you've stepped into the 2nd or 3rd century.

12. Chefchaouen

You might recognize this city from the famous photos of its bright blue buildings. Set against a wide valley and tucked between two peaks in the Rif Mountains, much of Chefchaouen was recreated by Andalusian refugees escaping the Reconquista, so it might remind you of the hills of Spain.

Ramadan and eid.

The ninth and holiest of months in the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is observed by most in Morocco and is thought to be a time of spiritual rejuvenation. For this month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset - refraining from eating and drinking during daylight hours. Eid marks the end of fasting with 3 days of feasting and celebration.

Gnaoua World Music Festival

Seaside Essaouira hosts this world-famous festival that celebrates the mysterious music of the Gnaouas, brought to Morocco centuries ago via the African slave trade. Jazz, rock, blues, and pop music add a contemporary flavor, although the drums of the Gnaouas are the true soul of the festival.

Is it safe to travel to Morocco?

Morocco is an extremely safe country to travel to as long as you abide by the local culture and customs.

Is Morocco a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

We recommend LGBTQIA+ travelers exercise discretion when traveling in Morocco as homosexuality is not widely accepted in the community. Homosexual acts (including kissing) are illegal in Morocco and can attract a fine or even a jail sentence for offenders. That said, some towns (such as Marrakech and Tangier) are considered more gay-friendly than others. As long as travelers use discretion and avoid public displays of affection, travel in Morocco should not be a problem.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. Dar Si Said

Housed in a 19th century palace, Dar Si Said is a fantastic folklore museum in Marrakesh. You’ll discover Islamic architecture and artisan craftwork, including an Andalusian fountain basin that’s more than 1,000 years old. It’s also surrounded by several courtyards and gardens where you’ll find ornate stucco, tiled mosaics and carved wooden ceilings.

The best cities to visit in morocco.

This big city is founded in 1062 and it is one of the most famous Moroccan cities, also one mean destination for tourists. It’s “Red City” nicknamed came from the color of its buildings in the medina which is concentrated all the local history. The bustling and vibrant buzz of Marrakesh Medina sums up Morocco for many visitors. The old city is entered from the vast plaza of Jemmaa el-fna Square where, it seems, half of the city converges throughout the day and into the evening to hang out with the stall vendors, traditional musicians, snake charmers and random acrobats. Once inside the Medina itself, you enter a world of maze-like alleyways and shopkeeper hustle. It’s an experience of full of colorful and noisy local life, and not to be missed on your Moroccan sightseeing trails.

This small town is exotic with its fortified walls, fishing harbor and seagulls soaring and screaming over the town, it is by popular acclaim Morocco’s most likeable resort: an eighteenth-century town, enclosed by medieval-looking battlements. Its whitewashed and blue-shuttered houses and colonnades, wood workshops and art galleries, boat-builders and sardine fishermen and feathery Norfolk Island pines, which only thrive in a pollution-free atmosphere, all provide a colorful and very pleasant backdrop to the beach. Many of the foreign tourists making their own way to Essaouira are drawn by the wind, known locally as the Alizée ,which in spring and summer can be a bit remorseless for sunbathing but creates much-sought-after waves for windsurfing and, increasingly, kiteboarding or kitesurfing. The same winds make Essaouira pretty terrible for surfing.

Casablanca’s biggest city and commercial capital, it may not be as exotic as other Moroccan cities, but it represents Morocco on the move: Casablanca is where the money is being made, where the industry is, where art galleries show the best contemporary art and where fashion designers have a window on the world. The old pirate lair is looking towards the future, showing off its wealth and achievements. The Hassan II Mosque is the city’s landmark building; it is a lavish symbol not only of the city, but also of Morocco itself. This modern mosque (finished in 1993) doesn’t do things by halves. The decoration detail covering every centimeter of the mammoth 2 ha site took 10,000 artisans to complete. Intricately carved marble pieces, vibrant mosaics and zelige tile details pay tribute to traditional Islamic architecture.

Along with Marrakech, Fes is Morocco’s other big cultural destination. But unlike its sister Imperial City to the south, Fes hasn’t been trussed up for the tourists. Fes el Bali (Old City) is an authentic muddle of a place where it’s near impossible to not get lost. The back alleys here with their chipped plaster-work and gorgeous old doors will have you stopping for photos on every corner, while the stinking tanneries are one of Fes el Bali’s most popular attractions for those who can handle the smell.

Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen, ou Chaouen “blue town,” is famous for being one of the prettiest places on the planet. For people who love color, it’s truly a blue dream, with its bright cerulean-hued architecture tucked within the hills of northwest Morocco. Row after row of buildings in its center are covered in blue paint in shades ranging from baby blue to aquamarine. The unusual coloring was introduced by Jewish refugees who arrived during the 15th century Spanish Inquisition, they believed that the more one looks at anything blue, the more they think about heaven. It also seems to help repel mosquitoes, as the insects perceive it as clear flowing water, which they aren’t attracted to. It does feel as if you’re swimming when walking down the flights of blue painted steps surrounded by the blue ceilings and blue walls. No cars are allowed on its narrow streets, where vendors sell their wares in open, traditional markets. The high walls block out the intense rays of the sun to create cool, shady areas, and from just about anywhere in the Chefchaouen medina, you can look up to see the mountain peaks above.

We did a 3-day desert tour from Marrakech to Fes and truthfully, it was probably one of the best travel experiences we've ever had. I went with my family (my dad, mom, and younger brother) and they felt incredibly comfortable during the desert trek and camping experience.

We had Omar as our guide - we LOVED having him. He was actually our best guide the entire time we were in Morocco and missed him dearly when we had to part ways. He's super attentive and caring and is willing to shift the itinerary a bit to suit whatever kind of experience you're looking for.

Wonderful tour from Marrakech to Fes

I did this tour with my family, in December 2019. We thoroughly enjoyed it. The driver Ibrahim and the guide Youssef were just wonderful.

They were always supportive and accommodating to our requests. The accommodation during our tour was fantastic, especially one night stay in Mohayut riad in Merzouga was just incredible. I would certainly recommend this trip to all.

I booked this tour online (for my group of 3 people) before arriving in Morocco. To be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect at all, since it can be hard to completely trust online reviews. The owner was always very responsive to my questions via email, which put my mind at ease initially.

When the day of our tour finally came, our guide Zaid picked us up on time and instantly provided the best service--from photo ops to information to excellent driving and beyond.

Even though we booked a group tour, it ended up only being the 3 of us in our car, which was really nice. I think this is such a convenient and economical way to see the MANY landscapes of Morocco and do activities you won't find in other places. I would really recommend this trip and this company.

We highly recommend all Morocco tours to everyone! They provide a once in a lifetime experience and everything is run exactly to plan. We were pricked up in Fes in a private car and driven to to desert where we enjoyed a camel ride to our desert camp. We had so many amazing experiences in luding drum performance by locals, visiting nomad camps and fossil tours. We spent one night in Merzouga and a third night in death valley before finishing the tour in Marrakesh. The landscapes were breathtaking. All the accommodation was fantastic with options to upgrade to more luxury where you want. The food was great everywhere we went. It was an amazing trip that I couldn't recommend more.

We did an amazing 3 day desert tour from Marrakech. Aziz was so helpful and looked after us so well. Everything was organised and we felt entirely relaxed and safe the whole time. It was great being able to stop whenever we wanted to. Would highly recommend!!

Perfect 13 day tour

Aziz put together a bespoke 13 day trip taking in Chefchaouen, Volubis, Fes, The Sahara, Marakesh, Essaouira). He found us wonderful small family run riads, all with air conditioning and western toilets. Guides when we wanted them (I highly recommend Rachid in Fez who navigated us to highlights where we would have blundered around bewildered) and time to explore on our own, or just chill, when we didn't. Our excellent driver, Idir, covered the whole country without once looking at a map. He had friends and contacts everywhere - conjuring a brilliant local guide in 15 minutes when we mentioned a walk through the beautiful Ziz valley would be nice - it was. I can't recommend them enough.

The Louisiana governor will be in Slidell Monday to tour storm damage.

Slidell was struck by an EF2 tornado on Wednesday, causing widespread damage and power outages.

Gov. Jeff Landry spoke to the media before touring the areas with the most damage.

Landry says he is working on an emergency declaration with Slidell's mayor and talked about state resources.

"We're going to see those declarations when I get back to Baton Rouge this afternoon. And what we're going to do is utilize the current statute that allows for a 75/25 split, 75% being paid for by the state and 25% by the parishes. And what, of course, this is mainly going to be about debris pickup is what we're concentrating on, because those are the things that we saw. We needed the most. We want to make sure that we can clean this debris out, get all this vegetation out of the roadways and out of people's yards so that we can get back to work", said Gov. Jeff Landry.

Since the tornado, Slidell city officials have opened a resource center at Fritche Park that restocks daily with food, water, tarps, and other supplies.

Cleco has restored power to all customers in St. Tammany.

The St. Tammany Parish School District also reopened all schools Monday following a rushed effort to get students back in classrooms ahead of state tests.

SLIDELL, La. (WVUE) - Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry visited Slidell on Monday (April 15), assessing the damage left behind from an EF-2 tornado that tore through the city last Wednesday.

“If you’re in the roofing business in St. Tammany Parish, I think you’re going to have plenty of business unfortunately,” Landry said. “We saw a lot of blue tarps, we saw a lot of homes that lost a number of shingles. When you get to this area, you see the destruction.”

The tornado caused significant damage, leaving many residents and businesses grappling with its aftermath.

During his visit, Landry met with local officials to discuss response efforts and assess the extent of the damage. This marks the fifth day since the tornado struck, and the community is still reeling from its impact.

Landry said the state is committed to helping not only St. Tammany Parish, but the other parishes impacted by last week’s severe weather. The state likely will cover 75% of debris removal with 25% paid for by the parish.

“We want to make sure we can clean this debris out, get all of this vegetation out of the roadways and out of people’s yards so we can get back to work,” Landry said.

Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer said, “We’re going to be trying to find apartments, vouchers for them, whatever resources we can for those folks to get a place to live until we can put this apartment complex together.”

A block from where Landry stopped, dozens of church volunteers are continuing to distribute water, cleaning supplies and other items.

Vickie Kelley, a church volunteers said she was initially excited to see the motorcade. “It was kind of interesting,” Kelley said. “I don’t know what the Governor said, but I was kind of wondering why he didn’t visit a facility like this that’s doing charity work.”

Another Slidell resident said, “Glad to see him out here and that he’s seeing what’s really going on.”

The governor is expected to issue an executive order declaring a State of Emergency.

Landry said, “The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) continues to work with local officials to provide support and assist with navigating the recovery process moving forward.”

Over the weekend, the American Red Cross was on the ground in Slidell, providing much-needed support to affected residents. They distributed free hot food and water while also conducting damage assessments to facilitate the dispersal of emergency funds.

Slidell Police reported one of their motorcycle officers was injured Monday while escorting Landry’s motorcade, in a collision with an unmarked Louisiana State Police vehicle. The officer was hospitalized with what the department described as “moderate injuries.”

CBS Apologizes After Billy Joel's CBS Concert Cut Short — Here's What Happened

The highly anticipated special 'The 100th: Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden – The Greatest Arena Run of All Time' abruptly ended during "Piano Man"

CBS didn't appear to be in the mood for a melody on Sunday, April 14.

Near the end of the highly-anticipated special The 100th: Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden – The Greatest Arena Run of All Time , the network abruptly cut away to local news as Billy Joel was singing the final chorus of his iconic song "Piano Man." The concert's unceremonious ending left viewers fuming — and they took to social media to express their anger.

One person wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter), "CBS has been promoting the Billy Joel concert special every two minutes for WEEKS. So what better way to air it than to preempt it for a half hour and the cut him off MID-PIANO MAN? C'mon guys."

Another user added , "WTF — CBS New York of all places!!😠... You cut off the ending of the Billy Joel 100th show right at the ending of Piano Man!! Where's the end of the show??" While a third chimed in , "Are you kidding me @CBS ??? You advertise the Billy Joel 100th Madison Square Garden concert for WEEKS. And you delay it and then cut it off during PIANO MAN to broadcast the news??? You can't be serious with this!!! 😡 #BillyJoel100 #BillyJoel."

As for why the special was cut short, the answer is simple: the concert had a late start time. CBS aired the 2024 Masters Tournament earlier in the evening, and when it ran over, it pushed the start of Joel's concert back by 30 minutes. This in turn led CBS to cut away to local news as the broadcast spilled over into the 11:00 EST time slot.

There is some good news: CBS has apologized for the snafu and will be airing The 100th: Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden in full on April 19th at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

In a statement shared by the Piano Man himself on X , CBS said, "A network programming timing error ended last night's Billy Joel special approximately two minutes early in the eastern and central time zones. We apologize to Mr. Joel, his fans, our affiliated stations, and our audience whose viewing experience was interrupted during the last song. Due to the overwhelming demand from his legion of fans, BILLY JOEL: THE 100TH – LIVE AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN will be rebroadcast in its entirety on CBS on April 19th at 9 p.m. ET/PT.”

During the show, Joel spoke about why the New York City venue is so special to him.

"We play a lot bigger places. We play similar arenas, but this is The Garden," Joel told the audience. "I first came here when I was a little boy. I think I was about 4, 5 years old. My parents brought me to the circus and the star that year was Gene Autry. He had a big hit with 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.' "

CBS first announced the special during the Super Bowl , and it was filmed on March 28 when the legendary singer performed his 100th show at Madison Square Garden.
