Y aquí tenemosla esperadísima secuela de, posiblemente, una de las mejores aventuras gráficas que se hayan hecho y de uno de los juegos más emblemáticos del sector, lo que hace que desde sus primeras impresiones se mida por un rasero diferente a los demás.

Desgraciadamente o no, ya no nos encontramos ante el reto que suponía el original, una aventura de las de point and click que tanto echamos de menos últimamente. Al igual que ha ocurrido con otros clásicos del género, se ha transformado en una aventura al uso. Existirán peleas y zonas de infiltración, implementadas de forma bastante básica y que más que divertir resultan tediosas.

Por otro lado, la gran mayoría de los aspectos que identificaban al original se han simplificado. Tendremos que lidiar con una cantidad ínfima de objetos en nuestro inventario, y los puzzles que nos plantea el juego son tremendamente sencillos de resolver. Además, rápidamente podremos sacarle todo el juego a los distintos escenarios por los que nos moveremos sin dedicarle mucho tiempo a la exploración de los mismo. Tenemos, en conclusión, un juego que no pedirá mucho esfuerzo a nuestra materia gris.

No obstante, cuenta con una bella -aunque no encomiable- factura técnica, y sobre todo destaca en el aspecto quizá más importante: el argumento. La enrevesada trama que nos propone este Dreamfall engancha completamente y hará que estés deseoso por conocer más acerca de ella. Digamos que el objetivo de esta guía es facilitarte el paso de una escena a otra.

Videogames can be brash affairs, with their guns and cars and tits and stuff. Pop culture entertainment and big name brands bound together with startling technical wizardry and graphics-as-porn. Forty quid gets you 15 hours of in-your-face fun. Have some of that, you monkeys!

Some games - adventures games if I'm to get to a point - sit outside this world of in-your-face entertainment. Adventure games need to have a confident style, rich character and intelligent storytelling if they're going to make an impact in a world where bigger guns make a game better than the last. And while many fans look back at the good old days of point and click adventure games as a golden era, titles such as Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon, Bone and Fahrenheit have all delivered enough wit, kookiness and charisma to prove they're just as relevant to this generation as the past. There are not enough developers (or publishers, for that matter) willing to take the risk on this sort of game, but that's a different story.

To its credit, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey pulls off the style and narrative demands of the adventure genre with flair. The story is strong, and it unfolds, twists and develops at a welcome pace. Conversations with the inhabitants of the worlds are meaty but never overwhelming. Ten minutes of chat isn't laborious, but insightful and intriguing. This sequel to the much fawned over PC adventure, confusingly titled The Longest Journey, will be a welcome return for those that succumbed to the charms of the original game six long years ago. With three playable characters and contrasting worlds to explore, Dreamfall has a deep story to sink into.

The move to three dimensions prompts the player to explore, but it's still a shallow affair. You point your character in the right direction and when it's possible to interact with something or someone an icon appears. Adventure games always rely on puzzles, but in Dreamfall there's no real challenging solutions to your dilemmas. There's barely any complexity to a puzzle that asks you to find an item and take it to a specific location. There's an unwelcome amount of handholding throughout Dreamfall, whether from characters practically telling you what to do, or just very obvious game design, making the experience a meander through the game rather than a challenge. And there's scarcely anything more depressing in a modern adventure game than being confronted with yet another lock-picking mini-game. If I could sacrifice one of my little fingers in order to never have to play such a thing ever again, I would.

Elsewhere, the 'action' aspects of the game can only be described as really, really bad. Fighting doesn't happen a lot, but when it does it's a clumsy, unresponsive punch-drunk shuffle with no style, rudimentary animation and piss poor mechanics. "Hey, it's an adventure game, it's not about fighting," I hear you cry. Well then, why the blinkin' flip are these barely-baked sections even in the game? It makes Fahrenheit's feeble use of quicktime moments for brawling seem like Virtua Fighter.

Stealth makes an appearance too, and feels about as welcome as a jackboot at a testicle party. I'm no ninja, but even I know that to creep past unnoticed I should do my best to avoid broken glass. And that's your lot. No wall-hugging, no using the shadows to your advantage, no light meter or strategic use of scenery. Just crouch down and keep out of your enemy's field of vision and you'll be fine. And try to avoid going in to narrow corners as much as possible, because the camera seems to have been designed by someone with a lazy eye.

Some stealth and confrontational situations can be avoided by turning to conversation, and it's good to know you're given the option to try different approaches, but it's worth noting that there's only ever one outcome. Decisions your character makes will rarely change the course of the game.

The presentation of Dreamfall compliments the story well. It's not a great looking game (even the PC version on Ultra settings is a big disappointment), but it's distinctive with a visual style that helps create the convincing alternative worlds. The use of sound is excellent too, from ambient noise to instrumental soundtrack and strong voice work. Conversations are a little choppy, but that's probably due to the sheer amount of speech recorded for the game. Generally, it's this kind of care and attention to detail that enforces developer Funcom's adventure game credentials.

Dreamfall has clearly been designed for those that like to follow an unfolding story, for those that are happy to listen to other people's conversations and immerse themselves in character exposition and plot revelations. We can't berate something for wanting to be an 'interactive experience' when it does it so well. So many games try to be something different and end up flat on their arses that we can say Dreamfall is an adventure game success.

But in many ways it's only preaching to the converted. Characters from the first game return, so if you've not experienced part one you can be a little baffled, or simply oblivious to who they are and what they've done in the past. Even if you have played the first game you might not remember the finer details very well - it has been six years after all. And just like a long running TV series, there's no real conclusion to the story. Be aware that however many hours you put into the game (around the 15 hour mark, by the way), you won't come away feeling satisfied with the outcome. Do we have to wait another six years?

And that's a shame for newcomers, because they're missing out on a story that has been so lovingly crafted. If the stealth and fighting sections are there to tempt those that aren't usually aroused by this sort of game, or to breathe life back into a crusty genre, they've done the worst job possible. And with puzzles that don't tax the brain, it's not really a thinking experience either.

The addition of more traditional 'gamey' elements is a complete failure, and Dreamfall lacks the crossover appeal found in something like Fahrenheit, with its self-contained story. It doesn't do anything new and neither does it go very far in welcoming the curious. If you liked The Longest Journey then you'll be eager to delve back into the story, but even that's hampered by the fact that there's a clear set up for Part Three, so don't expect closure. The best that can be said for Dreamfall is that you can sit down with a copy knowing that there's little to do, but you'll enjoy investigating the story and experiencing an interesting sci-fi fable.

Análisis de Dreamfall The Longest Journey

La larga espera para disfrutar de la segunda parte de la aventura “The Longest Journey”, llega a su fin. Ricos personajes y una ambientación de lujo, se fusionan con acción e incluso sigilo. Un auténtico salto a las 3 dimensiones.

Las aventuras gráficas ya no son lo que representaron hace más de una década. Las grandes compañías como LucasArts disponen de títulos contados y viven de las rentas pasadas de estos grandes estandartes del entretenimiento. Salvo honrosas excepciones como la serie Star Wars , ya sea en su vertiente arcade o rolera, siguen gozando del tirón y la aceptación de los compradores.

No obstante parece que para subsistir en este difícil mundo de las aventuras gráficas, es necesario introducir novedades; ahí tenemos si no al aclamado “ Fahrenheit ”, con sus distintos modos de juego, incidiendo en la jugabilidad del mismo.

Pero en los tiempos actuales parece primar el poderío gráfico, si un juego no cumple ese requisito indispensable parece que las compañías son reacias a ponerlo en la calle. Es una pesadilla para los “aventureros” de todas las épocas, pues todos han crecido con la entrañable serie “ Monkey Island ” o con “ Indiana Jones ”. Estos grandes estandartes de la industria del videojuego supusieron para su época unos adelantados a su tiempo, eso si, con unos gráficos de escándalo cuando salieron… Pero no pasa como con las aventuras actuales, no hay grandes clásicos como lo son los magníficos juegos de LucasArts.

Como ya estamos acostumbrados, lo actual adolece de magia, de ese carisma especial que hacía que una aventura te atrapara hasta que la llave de turno no abría una puerta impenetrable. Nos podrán apabullar con excelentes gráficos y mil filigranas, sonidos envolventes, texturas casi reales, paisajes con calidad fotográfica, pero todo esto no es nada comparado con una aventura donde lo más importante sea el argumento y las diferentes historias que haya que resolver.

No todo está perdido y ya se están anunciando a bombo y platillo algunas aventuras bastante interesantes que irán llegando en breve. Algún estudio independiente, muy relacionado con LucasArts está tramando historias de vampiros… Esperemos que no les chupen la sangre las grandes compañías a las que solo les interesan los royalties.

Una historia contada por su protagonista En el anterior juego de la saga de “The longest Journey” veíamos como a una estudiante de arte con aires seudo místicos le sucedían una serie de acontecimientos con una trascendencia para su vida que serían definitivos para su desaparición. Esa chica en cuestión se llamaba April Ryan , un buen día se da cuenta de sus poderes para pasar de una dimensión a otra; nuestro mundo está conectado con un universo paralelo que está descomponiéndose, de tal forma que para que los dos se encuentren en perfecto equilibrio conviene que arregle ciertos “entuertos” de extraordinaria magnitud.

La trama se iba enmarañando cada vez más, el ambiente se tornó enrarecido y la protagonista se vio envuelta en un mundo mágico, acompañada de seres de apariencias extrañas y, en ocasiones, con no muy buenas intenciones…

Como en toda aventura también se hacía uso de objetos, se interactuaba con los personajes secundarios, que en la primera parte eran bastantes, convirtiendo esta primera aventura en toda una leyenda. Pero no siempre las historias tienen un final feliz y April quedó atrapada en el otro mundo (llamado Arcadia ) y jamás pudo volver a su mundo real (Stark, como lo llamaban los seres de Arcadia).

En el presente todo se interconectará con esta historia por medio de Zoë Castillo , una chica que vive en Casablanca con su padre, un hombre de negocios bastante ocupado. Corre el año 2219, y en el mundo han surgido continuos problemas, la llamada Estática ha ocasionado el Hundimiento , causa por la que el mundo está sumido en la indefensión, los humanos ya no pueden traspasar el cielo y se han visto privados de libertad para explorar otros planetas.

En este contexto, nuestra protagonista femenina siente unas extrañas visiones que le han estado perturbando de forma persistente. En las apariciones puede ver a una niña que le repite varias veces que salve a April Ryan . Esto cada vez le pone más nerviosa, hasta el punto de pensar que se está volviendo loca. Además Zoë siente que no sabe que hacer con su vida, no ve color y pasa su tiempo entre su casa y el gimnasio, donde por lo menos puede relacionarse con alguien. Entre la necesidad imperiosa de realizar un cambio radical de vida y las extrañas visiones, en cualquier momento pueden pasar cosas muy embarazosas.

Zoë recibe un encargo de su antiguo novio, le pide que recoja un objeto que es importante, pues el no dispone de tiempo para hacerlo personalmente. Aquí empieza el viaje apasionante que, dentro de diferentes mundos y circunstancias, como ya pasaba en el primer Longest Journey , llevará a descubrir a Zoë un mundo sin igual.

¿Se respeta a la aventura en nuestros días? Pues esta pregunta es fácil de contestar: no mucho. Así de tajante. Visto lo visto es lícito decir que las aventuras gráficas actuales se parecen más a una película interactiva que otra cosa. Las acciones se reducen en gran medida a mover el ratón en el instante preciso o recorrer algunos escenarios sin realizar ninguna acción específica, a veces esto es un tanto frustrante.

¿Por qué resulta tan difícil para las compañías contentar a los grandes grupos de aventureros que aún existen? No hay aventuras de gran calidad, con un gran elenco de personajes, un buen argumento y emocionantes puzzles; la jugabilidad se resiente por ello. En el caso que nos ocupa, podemos observar que tanto los personajes y el gran argumento se han mantenido a un gran nivel, pero los alicientes que conforman una buena aventura se han descuidado bastante.

Asimismo vemos como se han unido la acción y el sigilo en estas nuevas andanzas. Son características que se han afianzado con el tiempo, que desde que salió al mercado Fahrenheit no han abandonado las aventuras actuales. En Dreamfall el sigilo cuenta con un protagonismo en ciertas escenas, consigue aportar variedad, pero falla estrepitosamente en el manejo del personaje. No se ha ajustado la coordinación de teclas con los movimientos que el personaje realiza, cayendo en picado la escala de interés en los momentos cumbre del juego.

En los momentos de acción parece que también se hayan reído de nosotros, pues el personaje parece más bien un torpe patito luchando con unos ademanes que nadie se cree.

También, y como no podía ser menos, se han incluido pequeños mini-juegos que amenizan los lugares de difícil acceso. Suelen componerse de elementos de concatenación de objetos, ensamblaje de varios mecanismos que hacen que algo se abra o pueda manipularse. Es probable que haya que buscar ayuda para solucionarlos, pero en otras ocasiones mirar a nuestro alrededor de forma atenta será más ventajoso.

Cuando la tecnología llama a tu puerta Con todo lo comentado en las líneas anteriores puede que se desestime poder adquirir el juego. No os lo toméis todo tan a la tremenda, es probable que los aventureros más curtidos no vean con buenos ojos esta última creación de Funcom , y es cierto que quizás esté más orientada al gran público que a los verdaderos exprime juegos, aunque con todos los inconvenientes que tiene, estaría bien darle una oportunidad. Sobre todo porque viene de una verdadera institución en el género y, también, por la dedicación al entorno gráfico que se le ha dado.

La parte artística no tiene desperdicio, aunque si es verdad que los personajes principales han obtenido mejor aspecto físico que los secundarios. Esto es un fallo como una catedral, pues le quita verosimilitud al acabado final, pareciendo a veces que se ha quedado el trabajo a medias. Los paisajes parecen tener vida propia, casi todo en el escenario tiene movimiento, incluso la ambientación gracias a los efectos de luz tiene un gran acabado. En realidad, el tratamiento de las sombras, las luces y los efectos atmosféricos son lo mejor del juego.

Los gráficos aunque cumplen con su función no acaban de convencer, no llegan a crear el efecto de calidez que atesoraban los del primer “Longest Journey”. En algunos lugares parece como si hubieran sido hechos con prisas, no han sabido conectar lo que deslumbra con el contenido del juego en si. Por ejemplo en las cavernas de Arcadia se echa en falta que las formaciones rocosas tengan una mayor elaboración, algunas texturas no se han conseguido del todo.

Sin embargo el sonido merece mención aparte, al igual que la música. Las voces de los personajes están interpretadas por actores de otras sagas de juegos bastante recientes. Son reconocidas las voces de Zoë (chica que aparece también en Viaje al Centro de la Tierra), o la propia voz de April , que ha cambiado con respecto a su predecesora, y sigue gustando también, la verdad.

Sin ser la mejor aventura de su género podemos vanagloriarnos de la gran calidad que se ha intentado imprimir al juego. La mejor baza que han impuesto los señores de Funcom es el argumento, quu nos mantendrá en vilo de principio a fin, sin embargo las acciones a realizar a veces dejan bastante que desear. Si nos tomamos esta creación como una película interactiva quizás suframos menos, en cualquier caso si eres aficionado a las aventuras gráficas no te la pierdas.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey was developed by Funcom and released for the Windows and Xbox . It is the sequel to the 1999 PC game The Longest Journey .

It is 2219. You play Zoë Castillo, a student who has left college to try and find herself. However, it hasn't been easy for her as she finds that she is wasting a lot of time doing... absolutely nothing. Although the so-called Static seems to be growing worse across the Wire, disrupting communications and causing the occasional blackout of information, there is little else in her life that has brought her out from her personal malaise. That is, until things start to happen around her that she cannot easily explain.

When a close friend disappears and when she begins the search for the answers that he held, she will become involved in more than a simple investigation. As Zoë encounters new friends and foes in her struggle to understand the worlds that she will journey to, the story will also be seen from their perspectives as they try to uncover the truth behind the dark force threatening to destroy all that they know.
