Louis Group first became active in the field of cruise ship ownership and management in 1986, even though it had been involved in the representation of passenger vessels and cruise ships in the past. The period between 1989 and 2001 was a period of rapid growth for the cruise sector. During this time, the Group acquired in total 10 ships. In 1996, a cruise ship was chartered for the first time to Thomson Cruises, owned by TUI, the world’s largest tour operator. Following the growing trend in the cruise sector, Louis plc creates in 2014 a new brand, “Celestyal Cruises”. Celestyal Cruises has fast built an award-winning reputation and recognition as the number one choice for cruise travelers to the Greek Islands and East Mediterranean thanks to its regional expertise and exceptional hospitality. The company operates two vessels, each one intimate enough to provide genuine and highly personalized services. The foundation of the company’s philosophy is built on a unique Greek heritage which combines outstanding hospitality with genuine cultural destination immersion and provides authentic, lifetime experiences both onboard and onshore. Celestyal Cruises currently operates in 16 countries such as USA, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Turkey, etc. Celestyal Cruises passengers come from 140 countries. In November 2021, Louis plc announced that it has signed an agreement for the recapitalization of Celestyal Cruises Limited and the formation of a strategic partnership with Searchlight Capital Partners, L.P., a leading global private investment firm. Under the terms of the agreement, Searchlight will provide funding to Celestyal Cruises to support the development plans of the company, including its fleet renewal. Louis plc, through its subsidiary Louis Hotels Public Company Ltd, will acquire 40% of the limited partnership interests in the sole shareholder of a newly incorporated holding company. Searchlight will be the owner of 60% of the limited partner interests in the sole shareholder of such newly incorporated holding company. As a result of this transaction, Celestyal Cruises will no longer be considered a subsidiary company, but an associate of Louis plc. MV PRINCESA VICTORIA

Louis Cruise Line's PRINCESA VICTORIA had one of the longest and most glorious histories of any passenger ship. Built by Harland and Wolff of Belfast in 1936 for Union-Castle Line as the DUNNOTTAR CASTLE for the company's round Africa service from London, she was a modest combination passenger cargo liner who served her owners well. She and her sister, DUNVEGAN CASTLE, were requisitioned for armed merchant cruiser service in World War Two, but the DUNVEGAN was far less fortunate and was torpedoed off Ireland with a loss of 24 lives in 1940. DUNNOTTAR continued in war service as a troop transport, her most noteable duty carrying British soldiers to Normandy in 1944. She continued in repatriation service after the war until 1949, when after a quarter million miles and troops carried, she was returned to Union-Castle.

DUNNOTTAR CASTLE resumed her round Africa service and was joined by a series of newer vessels in the early 1950s. In 1958, she was offered for sale, and, quite remarkably, bought by Incres Lines who were seeking a solidly constructed ship to rebuild into the ultimate luxury cruise liner. DUNNOTTAR CASTLE sailed to Rotterdam, where a complete rebuilding was performed at the Wilton-Fijenoord shipyard, transforming her into the sleek, deluxe MV VICTORIA. She was given a new bow and stern and a vastly enlarged and modified superstructure. Her B&W diesel engines were replaced with brand new Fiat engines. The only original parts of the ship left were the hull and inner portion of her upper superstructure, where the bridge and officer's areas still retained their Union-Castle features.

Gustavo Pulitzer-Finale was responsible for VICTORIA's chic interior stylings, which were replete with fine wood paneling and trend-setting midcentury Italian furniture. Her decks were named after precious and semi-precious jewels and color coordinated accordingly. On Amber Deck, one would find amber colored bannisters and carpeting. Same for Coral, Sapphire, and Emerald, etc. VICTORIA had a dining room with a barrel shaped domed ceiling and musician's balcony as well as a two deck high auditorium. Emanuele Luzzati created most of the artworks, which were based on Roman themes and in media ranging from metallic panels to elaborate ceramics.

Like many other cruise ships, VICTORIA was a victim of the fuel crisis and high operating costs. Incres Line folded in 1975 and the VICTORIA was laid up at Brooklyn. Chandris Cruises purchased the then 39 year old ship for spare parts and furniture for their other vessels, but after reexamining her, they realized she would make an excellent asset to their cruise fleet. Instead of stripping her and selling her for scrap, they refitted the ship and gave her the slightly amended name of THE VICTORIA. Her capacity increased from 430 to 548 passengers.

THE VICTORIA was a huge hit with budget-minded passengers and became a renewed fixture in Caribbean and European cruise service. She stayed in the Chandris fleet until 1993, when the Cypriots purchased her for the burgeoning cruise market from Limassol to Egypt and Israel. Her new owners, Louis Cruise Lines, renamed the ship PRINCESA VICTORIA and kept her in excellent condition for the next ten or so years. In 2001, she was laid up at Eleusis following the glut in European tourism caused by the terrorist attacks of September 11. By this time, her nearly 60 year old hull and forty year old machinery were in need of expensive maintenance. With the rise in scrap prices, it was inevitable that the PRINCESA VICTORIA would meet her end at Alang. Under the delivery name VICTORIA I, she sailed off from her Greek anchorage in the spring of 2004, arriving at Alang that summer.

Louis are based in Cyprus and operate a variety of ships (older ones).

They often charter out their vessels for long periods of time to third parties who market them themselves. For example Thomson Holidays (Part of TUI) cruise division use Louis ships.

They operate some cruises themselves mainly short 'mini-cruises' from Cyprus and Piraeus.

Here is their website http://www.louiscruises.com/aboutus.htm

Cool Cruiser

Nobody has posted regarding Louis Cruises that I've found. I am booked to go on the Greek Island cruise this June and will let you know my experience then. I don't know if that will be too late for your friend. I did contact Louis via e-mail to find out if they have a ping-pong table on the ship, as we are fanatics. They were very prompt with a warm and friendly response that they did have a ping-pong table.

I was aboard the Louis Cruise Line MV Sapphire from April 23 to May 1, 2005 and thoroughly enjoyed the cruise. There were 28 Americans and 600+ French, Italian, Slovene, and Dutch passengers. The crew spoke fluent English and seemed very pleased to have us. All passengers were very cordial. The ship is old but clean. If you are a person who likes to complain there would be plenty to find to complain about. This cruise line is not for everyone but for us it was a real adventure and European enrichment. The highlight was a visit to Libya where the ruins at Leptis Magna were spectacular. The Libyan people made us feel extremely welcome. I have been on 11 cruises..(9) cruise lines and I would compare this to Royal Olympia….we had sailed with the Voyager in the past. We have also taken the Splendor Med cruise from Barcelona. The entertainment was mostly in French but very professional. My wife and I enjoyed the food but some others complained. There is a small casino. We took the train from Civitavecchia to Rome and back instead of the ship’s tour and visited the Catacombs. I have been monitoring Cruise Critic for several years and could find very little about Louis Cruise Lines. That’s why I am submitting this info. We took a chance and had one of the best cruise vacations ever. Again it is not the Ritz and not for everyone but in my opinion a good value and wonderful itinerary. We booked through the agent in Texas whom I discovered on the internet.

I was aboard the Louis Cruise Line MV Sapphire from April 23 to May 1, 2005 and thoroughly enjoyed the cruise. There were 28 Americans and 600+ French, Italian, Slovene, and Dutch passengers.

Frankly, I'm surprised that there were as many as 28 Americans! Louis will be marketing the Piraeus-based Greek Isles itineraries in the US, but previously I did not think that there had been any active marketing of Louis in the US at all so I would have expected the US passenger count to be rather closer to 0. I only know one other American who has been on Louis, and he's a ship nut (even more than I am ;) !) who has been on ships and lines so obscure that they make Louis look like Royal Caribbean.

SAPPHIRE is a nice-looking ship with a very interesting history... Among other things she was one of the very first Princess ships (chartered from Costa, at the time - ironic as Princess and Costa are now both part of Carnival).

Take a look at the SterlingVacations website. They are the preferred suppliers in the US for Louis Cruise lines and also the Dalmacia. I was told by the some of Sapphire crew that there were 43 Americans on the preceeding cruise to Egypt. I know we are not supposed to identify suppliers but I think you will be quite surprised. I am not associated with this organization nor involved in any travel marketing. The owners have impressive credentials including past presidency of your national travel organization. I originally found out about Sterling through a listing on Travel Zoo. I found quite a write-up at the Travel Trade professional website, and researched Louis (LUI) through the Cyprus stock exchange. I did not list my E-mail but would converse with you if you like.

Sincerely, ....ChrisCraft-63

vagabondWestport

I am a travel agent and recently attended seminar from Louis cruises. They are trying to promote them in USA. What the previous posts here say are true. It is a very good product but not for everyone. Most Americans prefer larger ships and view cruise ships as more time to meant to spent on the ship, therefore amenities of mega liners. In smaller European cruise lines like Luis, emphasis is on destinations, ports. Nevertheless, the ships are very comfortable, cabins are large, and food they told is authentic European. In American ships, the food is more adjusted to US palates. The ships are old but what they said "like beautiful mature woman" :) .

What I liked that they give an opportunity to take shorter cruises and disembark in any other port. They also allow passengers to get off in port, let's say Canary islands, or Mykonos spend a some time there and then board another Louis ship again and continue their trip. The ownership is Greek. These and Star cruises filled in space in marketing left by bankrupt Royla Olympic cruise lines. They usually do not sell their cruises alone but with Greek tour operators since they supplement cruises with island and Athens stays. That's why you do not see it advertising separately, mostly in Greek tour operators brochures.

We are two grandparents who have are taking two grands (age 11 &13) on a trip to Greece in August 2006. We have been looking at Homeric Tours which feature many land or land /cruise combo tours at fairly reasonable prices. The cruise portions utilize Louis Cruise lines. They have some suites that sleep four. I guess I am asking--yea or ney form anyone who has done this.

My Husband and I are taking a tour of the Greek Islands with GoAhead Tours and they are using Louis Cruises I will post more when we get home. Lorelle

When are you going? We will be going in June this year. It would be fun to know someone else. I live in Iowa, but spend some time near Ft. Myers.

ChrisCraft,

How much did people dress up on your cruise? I'd purchased a beautiful evening gown for the cruise we were supposed to be on and now assumed I wouldn't be able to wear it on the "Greek Islands only" cruise we will now be doing. However, you mentioned there were mainly Europeans on your cruise and I know they frequently dress up more.

I was on a Louis 8 day cruise and there were 2 "dressy" nites. You would have been out of place with an elegant evening gown. Most women wore a nice dress or pants and a nice blouse. Most men wore a suit or jacket. There were no Tux'es. Regarding other dress during the day, no one wore anything fancy. Some Women's European styles are colorful and there was a lot of henna hair. A lot of people wore jeans but the jeans are of a different style than that in the U.S. I believe that anything will fit in and you shouldn't wouldn't worry about it. My wife wore what I call "pedal pushers?" I would just wear what you do at home. No one really notices the difference and you won't feel conspicuous or out of place. Try to pack lite. One thing of importance on the Sapphire though. The ship is 110 volts like here in the U.S. but the sockets are two round prong European so one would need an adapter. You should inquire about the voltage on ship you are going on.

Regards.....:) ChrisCraft-63

DEBYCARD-BR

ChrisCraft-63,

I´m from Brazil, and I have some doubts about the cruises on MV Sapphire.

You said that the ship is old but clean , do you mind telling me what cabin did you stay? And what was your impression about it ?

What about the food ?

Do you recommend this ship ?

We were in Cabin 226, outboard with porthole. Our Stewardess was from Rumania and did an excellent job. This cabin was large and could sleep 3 as an upper and lower bunk was on the outboard side. There were two closets with plenty of space. A laarge dresser with 4 drawers and a slide-out writing desk. Individual lights over each bed. As a rule though, my wife and I prefer the upper decks and not this low. The bathroom was small but adequate. Good shower water pressure and hot. Here again, not a marble bathroom like the hotels in Marseille and Genoa where we stayed but we paid a lot less. You could hear thru the wall if someone coughed loudly but We have had the highest category penthouse suite on Carnival Conquest and you could hear through that wall also. Regarding the food, some complained that the deserts were not that fancy and they could make that at home. Maybe so but we liked them. Food was typical beef, lamb, fish, pork, etc. House wine was 15 Euros a bottle and very good. They did charge for bottled water at dinner. The ship uses Euros and not dollars. As with other ships all is charged with the card except the casino. We ate on deck for breakfast and lunch. It was typical buffet with a station for omlets in the morning. At lunch they grilled brats, chops, chicken, beef, lamb on different days, and had pizza, roast, and a special pasta station every day. There was usually a long line for the pasta station. The buffet had all types of salads, fish, chicken, beef, etc. There were no hot dogs or hamburgers for lunch. For dinner there were alternatives such as hamburgers, etc. One down side was management of coffee. Europeans drink a lot of tea and espresso and add water and milk and it is not so simple. They had an attendant for coffee on deck and there usually was a line. Coffee is not available continuously thruough the day like other cruise lines.

If you have doubts, I wouldn't go ,:( because this ship and probably the other Louis ships are whatever you make it. There is no comparision between the Sapphire and the high end ships like Crystal or the Raddison. There is also a whale of a difference in the cost. I would recommend the ship to the right person. There is no glitz, but also it is not stark. You get what you pay for. If you are prone to sea-sickness, I would get the ear patch to be safe as the ship is only 12,000 tons....10 times smaller than Carnival Conquest. All of the Europeans aboard seemed like average people to me. I didn't see anybody that looked or acted like an uppity-up. We went mainly for the itinarary. I would go on Louis again.:)

250+ Club

ChrisCraft, I really enjoyed your review. We are booked for Sept/05, 3 days in Athens, a 4 day Classical bus tour & a 7 day Greek Island cruise, with Louis Cruises. We were originally cruising with ROC, we haven't been told what ship we'll be on yet.

I appreciate your positive outlook. When travelling you need an open mind. We have taken 2 Med cruises with Sun Cruises, & really enjoyed them. Great itineraries & interesting people, from all over the world. Not 5 star but lots of FUN.

I've been researching the new Louis owned ship, Perla. Reviews have not been good. Here is something I found while web surfing.

Message 1:- You were talking about the Perla on your web-site, so I thought that you may like a little feed back on the current state of the ship. My wife and I just returned from a cruise on the Perla. We were on the Aegean cruise between May 6 and May 13, 2005 . It was awful. The entire ship stank of diesel fuel; the cabins, which obviously had not been refreshed since 1971, were old, tired and run down. The food was ordinary, the dining room dark and gloomy. Many passengers (including both my wife and I) got colds because of the filthy ventilation system. It was, all in all, a bad experience. I highly recommend that the ship be thoroughly cleaned and its diesel fuel handling system be repaired before it ever be allowed to sail again.

Message 2:- We took the PERLA on the COSMOS 7-day Greek Island cruise from May 6-13, 2005 and this ship was the worst excuse for a floating tub that I have been on. Throughout the cruise the entire ship, public areas and cabins, reeked of diesel fuel. Towels and bed linens washed in the ship's laundry smelled of diesel fuel. It was nauseating. Our cabin 245 on Caribbean Deck had cracked glass over the faded print on the wall, one entrance wall coat hook was missing entirely and half of a towel hook in the bathroom was broken off. The bed cover was threadbare and the sheets often had holes. Frequently there was no cold water for the scalding hot shower.

Also check the threads a few down from this on this site. No one seems pleased with the Aegean cruise ship Perla at this time.

We just returned from a trip to Greece and we went on the Louis Cruise ship Calyspo it was very nice. It is and older ship that has been refurbished, the food and the entertainment were very good. You can not compare this ship to newer ships but we enjoyed our time on the boat. I spoke to people that were on the Perla and they were not as happy with their experience.

Lorelle,   When are you going? We will be going in June this year. It would be fun to know someone else. I live in Iowa, but spend some time near Ft. Myers.   Sherry

Dear Lorelle,

I'm glad to hear you had a great time. We are leaving in two weeks. I would love to hear more about your trip, as we are starting out in Istanbul and then heading to Greece. It sounds like your ship was better than the one we are scheduled on, the Perla. Scary reviews on that. We were originally scheduled to go on the Radisson Diamond, but that was sold and cancelled. Our only option, in order to stay with our original itinerary was to go with Louis Cruise Lines and the Perla. Instead of cruising from Istanbul to Athens, we now have to fly, but we are still getting to the places we want to see. I am HOPEFUL that some of the problems will be resolved by the June sailings, but I know that shabby carpet and the like cannot.

Any other input about your trip would be great!

Are you on a tour? or doing it on your own? I really loved Istanbul we stayed in the old town and it is a beautiful city. Lorelle PS we were on the Perla for 1 day our tour company used it to take our group from Crete to Mykonos and the the people that I spoke to thought it was ok.

Thanks for the helpful info. We're booked on the Perla, too, with GoAhead vacations for a 3-day cruise as part of the tour. I hope they improve on these problems before we go. And the info from others on cruise dress code was really helpful. Don't women always seem to worry about these things? I do--and usually it's wasted worry. Will look for more info at this link as people give feedback. Thanks, everyone!

I read the reviews of the Perla last week and got scared, so my son and I are now going on the Viking Yacht Cruise for 7 days. The travel agent told me we would be on the Calypso, but I didn't see anything showing that that ship went on more than 4-day cruises. I hope we made the right decision. This is a very small, but new, ship/yacht and only carries 40 people.

Does anyone know about this company?

1. We looked into getting on Calpyso for a 7 day cruise. But we decided that instead of cruising from Athen, we want to fly in to Istanbul. This would give us 1 more land day to spend in Istanbul instead of on the sea. Because of this, our ship got changed to Coral. Does anyone know anything about Coral?

2. Also, we are bringing our 2-year old toddler and 6-month old infant, a major undertaking. Any suggestions on traveling with small kids in Greece and Turkey?

I have been researching itineraries for a possible family trip to Greece. I am intrigued with the idea of the hop on-hop off of this cruise. How does it work? I am also hoping for better news on Perla. I took the same itinerary with ROC's Odysseues in '96 and loved it! I was hoping to take my step kids on it again when I found out they went bankrupt.

  • 1 month later...

I live in Iowa also and have been researching Louis Cruise Lines.

If you have the time I would really appreciate your thoughts on the cruise.

The 11 Best Luxury Cruise Lines, According to T+L's Experts

These luxury cruise lines offer stunning suites, fine dining, and exceptional itineraries.

Meena Thiruvengadam is a lifelong traveler and veteran journalist who has visited more than 50 countries across six continents. Her writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal , Departures , TripSavvy , and other publications.

Cruising is back — and you might even say it's better than ever. "Vacations at sea are suddenly one of the biggest things in travel," Travel + Leisure cruise expert Paul Brady reported recently, as summer air travel is looking progressively messier but the cruise industry continues to stabilize post-pandemic. For those looking to plan a cruise, whether it's a last-minute trip for the summer or a 2024 around-the-world cruise, we've narrowed down the best luxury cruise lines to ferry you to some of the world's most mesmerizing destinations in comfort. Here, our favorite luxury cruise lines in the world.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

When this luxury cruise line says it's all-inclusive, it's not overstating. Everything from shore excursions, Wi-Fi, and laundry to gratuities, top-shelf liquor, and business-class international flights are included with Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' fares. While each luxurious suite features ocean views, nothing beats the view from the epic 4,000-square-foot, two-bedroom Regent Suite, which has two wraparound balconies, three walk-in closets, two Picasso lithographs, and a grand piano.

For the best in-suite views, book a room at the back of the ship, Kelly Cochrane, executive chef of Regent Seven Seas Cruises tells T+L.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises has just seven ships, but the debut of the brand-new Oceania Vista catapults this cruise line into the luxury division. The cruise line's relatively new Go Local shore excursions for small groups bring travelers to under-the-radar destinations, T+L contributing editor and long-time cruiser Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon reported recently. Her 2022 cruise on Riviera included 70 excursions "from canoeing Croatia’s Cetina River to cooking classes in Athens."

If you've ever dreamed of having your own butler, Silversea is the luxury cruise line for you. In fact, Silversea's butlers take white-glove service to a whole new level — they'll handle your laundry with more care than you do, scour port towns to find your favorite tastes of home, and even help you pack and unpack your suitcase. Further, Silversea's new culinary program, nicknamed S.A.L.T. (for Sea and Land Taste), brings the taste of destinations on board through cooking classes. Of course, there's no need to cook for yourself aboard a Silversea ship, as each one features several restaurants with multi-course menus to whet your appetite every night.

Viking Cruises

Viking Cruises is a river and ocean cruise line that recently added expedition sailings and the Great Lakes trips to its repertoire. "T+L readers rave about the consistency of Viking's vessels and their Scandinavian design," cruise expert Fran Golden reported when Viking once again topped T+L's World's Best Awards last year. Viking came in at No. 1 in T+L's best mid-size ship category and river cruise category. Golden said the WBA Hall of Fame honoree's 50 river "longships" are "light-filled floating boutique hotels."

Laureen Robert / Courtesy of Ponant

French luxury cruise line Ponant aims to make passengers feel as if they're traveling on their own private yachts. Guests enjoy Ladurée macarons, Veuve Clicquot Champagne, and luxurious Hermès bath products on board. Each of the company's ships features an onboard spa with massage cabins and either a Turkish bath or sauna. Ponant's luxurious small ships sail to remote destinations like Antarctica, incorporating once-in-a-lifetime experiences such as eclipse spotting from the edge of the earth. The company also partners with Smithsonian and Disney on certain sailings.

Seabourn cruises to all seven continents, and most recently launched Seabourn Venture , "marking the first time the Carnival Corporation–owned luxury cruise line will offer adventurous sailings on an expedition ship built for extreme environments," Brady reported. (The sibling ship to Venture , Seabourn Pursuit arrives later this year.) The World's Best Award-winning cruise line has all-suite ships and "is known for its onboard service and over-the-top food including complimentary caviar and Thomas Keller steakhouses on ships such as the  Seabourn Ovation, " Brady said.

Windstar Cruises

Windstar Cruises ' luxury small ships call on 150 ports throughout Europe, Central America, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific, and there's no way you'll go hungry on the journey. Exquisite onboard menus have been designed by acclaimed chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants. (You'll have to pay extra for alcohol, but all meals and a Windstar signature onboard barbecue — a feast of whole suckling pig, shrimp brochette, and more — are included.) The cruise line is not only a T+L World's Best Awards Hall of Fame honoree, it has a "long-standing partnership with the James Beard Foundation ," Brady reported, and regularly brings chefs on board for culinary-focused sailings. Yes, chef.

Courtesy of Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

Whether it's a river or an ocean you want to cruise, Scenic can take you there in style. The luxury cruise line operates river cruises in Europe and Asia, while ocean cruises on Scenic Eclipse (and the forthcoming Scenic Eclipse II ) can take guests to Antarctica, the Arctic, Australia, South America, and Greenland, among other coveted destinations. On board, you'll find fine dining, expansive spas and fitness facilities, and butler service.

Cunard Line

Jonathan Atkin / Courtesy of Cunard Line

This British luxury cruise line is known for its transatlantic service, which also transports pets between its headquarters in Southampton, England, and New York City. Cunard operates three ships with a fourth in the works, though only the Queen Mary 2 sails the transatlantic route. It's a cruise line that takes formality seriously; white-gloved waiters serve afternoon tea each day at 3:30 p.m. State rooms include 24-hour room service and evening turndown service with chocolates. Don't forget your tux, the gala nights are black tie.

Paul Gauguin Cruises

Roger Paperno / Courtesy of Paul Gauguin Cruises

Paul Gauguin Cruises operates just one ship, but it is exquisite, hosting 330 guests and sailing only in the South Pacific to destinations like Tahiti, Fiji, Tonga, and the Cook Islands. The ship is small enough to access private ports at remote beaches and take travelers well off the beaten path. Named the best small-ship ocean cruise line in T+L's 2022 World's Best Awards, Golden said the line is known for Tahitian-inspired massage techniques in the onboard spa and noted that cruisers particularly love the wonderful staff.

Celebrity Cruises

Steve Dunlop / Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises ' new Edge Series ships are taking things up a notch. Celebrity's signature Iconic Suites on board the Celebrity Edge and Apex offer panoramic views from above the ship's bridge; each suite boasts more than 2,500 square feet of space, including expansive 690-square-foot terraces, and comes with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Celebrity Beyond , which debuted in 2022, accommodates 3,260 guests has 32 bars and restaurants, like Le Voyage by chef Daniel Boulud, and two-story villas on board. Beyond 's sibling ship, Ascent , will be delivered later this year.

Photo tour: The allure of Louis Cruises' Cristal

The 25,000 gross ton, 960-guest Cristal is operated by the Celestyal Cruises division of Cyprus-based Louis Cruise Line. Over the years, this interesting vessel has transitioned from hard-working Baltic ferry to full time cruise ship.

Thinking about a cruise around Greece or Turkey? Our latest Cruise Ship Tour , in the carousel above, offers a deck-by-deck look at Louis Cruises' Cristal, which is based in the region.

In service since 1980, the 25,000-ton vessel will be familiar to Norwegian Cruise Line fans, as it sailed for the company in the 1990s under the name Leeward. Louis Cruises began operating the 960-passenger ship in 2007 after several years where it sailed for Norwegian's former parent company, Star Cruises, and the Baltic-based Silja Line. It also has sailed for the Baltic-based Viking Line and Sally Cruises in what amounts to one of the most unusual histories of any cruise vessel now at sea.

Designed as a research tool for vacationers considering a voyage, the Cristal photo tour -- by veteran cruise writer and ship photographer Peter Knego -- is the 113th in our ongoing series of cruise ship galleries. For previous photo tours, click on the links below.

Climate activists block Amsterdam port to stop cruise ship arrival

Environmental activists tied themselves to a lock on Sunday at the Port of Amsterdam to prevent the arrival of a cruise ship, according to the port and the climate group.

The action was carried out by Extinction Rebellion, who have called for an end to the highly polluting vessels in the Dutch capital.

“Oil kills, stop cruise ships”, the activists spray-painted on the doors of the lock they had tied themselves to, according to footage broadcast live online on their video stream, XRTV.

Carlijn van Essen, a spokeswoman for the Port of Amsterdam, told AFP that the activists were at two locks in the huge IJmuiden complex, northwest of the capital.

The action is blocking the passage of the “Serenade of the Seas” cruise ship with a thousand cabins, which was en route to Amsterdam, she said. An oil tanker was also blocked.

A week ago, 2,000 passengers from a cruise ship had to be evacuated by bus after similar action, Dutch public media NOS reported.

Extinction Rebellion became notorious for direct action protests such as shutting down bridges over the Thames river in London, but has largely shifted focus from mass civil disobedience to building an inclusive grassroots movement.

According to a study by the NGO Transport and Environment, cruise ships sailing in European waters in 2022 emitted more than eight million tonnes of CO2 – the equivalent of 50,000 Paris to New York flights.
