Lorde reschedules Australian & New Zealand tour dates until 2023

For the first time in five years, pop queen Lorde will return to Australian and New Zealand stages in early 2023.

The tour dates have now been rescheduled from February and March 2022. The announcement comes amidst the continuing uncertainty around the current NZ outbreak, and unknown implementation dates of the new traffic light system to ensure the tour can proceed with some surety and without risk of last-minute lockdowns.

I am beyond devastated to be postponing these shows. Starting the tour in New Zealand was always really important to me, and would have been a huge high. I fought this decision for a long time, but the truth is that touring internationally through a COVID outbreak has a ton of unforeseen moving parts, and I’d much rather play for you when we’re all confident it will go smoothly. I want to apologise wholeheartedly to the fans. I’m so gutted to let you down, but so grateful for your understanding. We’ll rage next year . LORDE

The global powerhouse dropped her first slice of new music in four years when she broke the internet with single ‘Solar Power’ earlier this year, now she will take over venues in her native New Zealand before jumping across the pond and delighting Aussie fans in February and March 2023.

With the long-awaited release of her new album,   also titled  Solar Power  – penned with long-time collaborator and producer Jack Antonoff – it is going to be a very big few years for Lorde. Her Australian and New Zealad tour announcement begins a global tour that will take her across Europe, the UK, and North America.

Lorde - Solar Power

Lorde has been slinging pop gems our way for close to a decade now.

At just 16 years old, she released her debut album  Pure Heroine , going on to win  t wo Grammy Awards including the coveted  Album of the Year.  The album peaked at #1 in over 20 countries, and gave us much-loved tracks ‘Royals’, ‘Tennis Court’ and ‘Team’.

It’s follow up, 2017’s Melodrama, launched Lorde to superstar status – driven largely by the inescapable ‘Green Light’. The record garnered critical acclaim, earning a slew of award nominations, and multi-platinum status.

The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalising the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors. In times of heartache, grief, deep love or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I’ve learnt to breathe out, and tune in. This is what came through. Lorde on her third album Solar Power

Lorde - Green Light

Lorde will take her new album Solar Power to stages around Australia and New Zealand in February and March 2023. Tickets are on sale via Ticketmaster.com.au.

Lorde, born Ella Marija Lani Yellic O’Connor on 7 November 1996, is an electro-pop singer and songwriter from Devonport, New Zealand.

Lorde signed to Universal Music Group in her early teens and was soon paired with producer and songwriter Joel Little (who has won Grammy Awards for songwriting and was the lead singer for New Zealand pop punk band, Goodnight Nurse). Little co-wrote and produced most of Lorde’s works, her first being “The Love Club EP” in March 2013. The EP reached the number two positions in national record charts in New Zealand and Australia.

A few months later Lorde released her debut single titled “Royals” and it was an instant, international hit. It even reached the top spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, making Lorde the youngest solo artist to have a number one US hit single (the last artist to hold to title was Tiffany and her single “I Think We’re Alone Now” in 1987). “Royals” first gained so much recognition on YouTube for its video, directed by Joel Kefali, which received over 750,000 views.

“Pure Heroine,” Lorde’s debut “indietronica” album, was released later in 2013 and predictably achieved immediate chart success in her home country and Australia. The dream-pop album also reached number three on the US Billboard 200. Other than “Royals,” singles from the album include “Team,” “Glory and Gore” and “Tennis Court.”

Lorde has also collaborated with UK house and pop duo, Disclosure, who released a remix of “Royals” (combined with Aluna George’s “White Noise”). She has also become revered as one of the most influential teenagers in popular culture, famously speaking out about feminism being “completely natural” and condemning the media for photo shopping photographs of her; even tweeting an original image of herself next to the photo shopped one, stating “two photos from today, one edited so my skin is perfect and one real. remember flaws are ok :-)”

Live reviews

The Melodrama World Tour Brisbane

Lorde of the Riverstage

The best time to see an artist perform is when they have less than three albums, you are pretty much guaranteed to get an awesome set without filler and no exclusions. In this respect Lorde did not disappoint and along with Porter Robinson (also at the Riverstage in February) was one of the best gigs of the year.

Melodrama is an interesting album, despite receiving critical acclaim, I often glean that some yearned for a repeat of Pure Heroine. At 40 minutes the album at face value do not appear substantial, but those will be some of the best minutes of the year, emotionally charged, unique, at times energetic and more diverse than her first offering.

Lorde opened with Homemade Dynamite, a great way to start. Magnets was a special treat, I didn’t expect that the Disclosure track would make it into the set despite it’s strong showing in the 2015 Triple J Hottest 100. Lorde weaved here own personal narrative through the set, recalling the stories behind tracks Tennis Court (a personal favourite), A World Alone and the Louvre.

Lorde covered Springsteen’s I’m on Fire with guitarist Ray Suen, and worked in 400 Lux, a seminal moment which slowed the tempo at the midpoint of the set. Paying homage to Brisbane band Powderfinger, “I was raised on Powderfinger. That was my shit,” she said before blending an intro from My Happiness into Liability.

Pure Heroine tracks Royals and Team were well received, and built the intensity to the final song Green Light, cue the confetti storm. Lorde returned to play Loveless as the encore.

On the down side, there were no tracks from Hunger Games, Meltdown or Yellow Flicker Beat could have been worked well with the set. Writer in the Dark was a curious omission.

All in all, one of the best shows of the year, on a beautiful night, and well supported by George Maple, who will be playing in Brisbane this coming February.

Lorde is revolutionary for her age. Her first album to go big is one of the few that I can listen to all the way through and love every song that plays. "Pure Heroin" is exactly right, it's so addictive. Lorde is only 17 but speaks to issues and a lifestyle that is so much more than the other teenagers making music right now. There's real depth to it, unlike Kesha or Miley Cyrus - and her voice is amazing! I saw her live in Austin earlier this year, and it was incredible - her stage presence is so delightful and you can tell she is loving every minute of her success right now. She played all the songs on her album and talked a bit about them - but not so much that you just wanted her to get on with the show. Her music is so simple but her voice is so strong and powerful that it doesn't need any fluff in it. I love how she embraces her flaws and encourages us all to do so as well. You'll find her commenting on photoshopped pictures of herself ousting the editing that was done. She also tries to be conscious of the audience she is playing to - she knows that young people, girls especially, are listening to her music and she wants to portray the message of strength and independence; this is a welcome message from the boy dependent, superficial, materialistic songs that are being made by most pop music artists. She really stands out. Doesn't try to be sexy or show the world that she's growing up, it's much more grounded than that. If you haven't listened yet, I highly recommend it. I know I'll be waiting for her next album.

Omg. Where do I start? Amazinggggg.

The show all started when Tove Styrke got on stage. She was alright. I did like her cover of liability.

Next was Run The Jewels. And they focused on 3 things, People yelling “R T J!”, middle fingers, and flashing lights that could give you a seizure. I couldn’t even understand what they were saying. They had talent though.

Then, the queen came on. She started with Sober, like blue lights. Next was Homeade Dynamite and Tennis court. Amazing. Then colorful stage for magnets. Then Buzzcut Season and 400 lux, then came a new version of ribs. Then the louvre, hard feelings, and yellow flicker beat. Then she sat down, gave a 7 minute speech, and sang both writer in the dark and liabillity. Both really beautiful. Then she got up and sang Sober ll, and Supercut. Then, came the hits. ROYALSSSS. She invited us to sing and we all lost our voices. Then came Perfect Places. With a child choir which was cute. Then the last song was green light, she sang it and before the confetti, she told us to jump, and “fucking lose it”. Then there was A LOT (almost too much) CONFETTIII!!!! Then she went off. Then came back on for the encore, It had Loveless, then a non released catchy song called “Precious Metals”, then her last song (for real) was Team. She went down to General Admission at the end. And gave everyone high fives. IT WAS AMAZING. Definitely go see her if she’s coming near you.

Oh Lorde she is not one to disappoint! Singing all the favourites from her most recent album 'Pure Heroine' and more of her latest songs I hadn't even discovered before. While performing at Festival Hall, in Melbourne I didn’t think the venue put Lorde’s talent to justice but maybe it was just the seating. I feel like Lorde deserved a much larger ‘stadium-like’ venue to allow as many people as possible to witness one of the most prominent artists in the "post-millennial" era. Only a 17 year old from New Zealand, I don’t think you can get anymore unique than that! I was worried it was going to be one of those ‘one set stage’ performances but Lorde managed to have a costume change in the middle of her hit song “Team”! Along with varying Special effects including lights, cameras and a lot of action in the background while she was singing. There was a revolving chandelier, many different coloured lights, and a screen to allow those not in the mosh pit to see her face up close, adding to the atmosphere. Her accompanying act was way better than I expected, SAFIA has now got a new number one fan. The concert overall was very memorable leaving me wanting to relive all the songs performed on the night from both acts. Can’t wait for another concert from the one and only, Lorde!

EPIC. Fireworks, smoke, flashing lights ... costume changes, short videos, chat sessions ... this was one of the best concerts I’ve been to ! Somehow it didn’t feel super super extravagant and large scale though, which I loved because it made the whole experience so much more intimate. We arrived at around 6, and because that was when the gates opened we expected people to have been already lining up for ages and we thought we would get a terrible place in the mosh pit but we were actually still so close to the front! I loved how Lorde chatted to us like friends and really interacted with the audience. She comes across as such a wonderful, kind and genuine young woman, and it was so gorgeous to watch her sing and dance her beautiful heart out. She played a lot of her old music from Pure Heroine as well which was awesome - including Royals, Team, Tennis Court, Buzzcut Season and Ribs. She also played Magnets (by Disclosure) and a beautiful rendition of I’m on Fire (Bruce Springsteen) in combination with 400 Lux. That was possibly my favorite performance of the night. Green Light was the finale and was absolutely awesome of course. I would highly recommend you see Lorde live for an amazing once in a lifetime experience!!

Oh my Lorde! I highly recommend all lovers of music to attend at least one Lorde concert - it was the best concert I've been to yet! Couldn't fault it; her tone was perfect, her dancing crazy and awesome, her humbleness astounded me especially how she informed the audience of meaning of her songs. The atompshere was buzzing! She captured her audience, with her use of the whole stage and just having a good time! The lights were great and added a good vibe to her performance. I thought it was lovely how she apologised for rescheduling her show "I'm so sorry for having to reschedule I became gravely ill in Las Vegas - mum told me I had to reschedule. I told her 'I'm going to Australia if I have to go on my own'. I also thought if I'm this sick I can't give you guys a proper performance- I wouldn't be able to dance around and get into it like I'm doing tonight!" I honestly cannot stress enough how great this show was - any age can go, sing their heart out and dance till their feet fall off. This young kiwi girl definetly has a "speeshil" (how she pronounces the word special) nack for performing and entertaining - knowing what the audience wants to see! If I was to rate it, honestly 10/10- had the best night ever!

At the center of the stage there’s a staircase on the top of a round structure. The whole thing is placed on a round platform.

During the first song, Leader of a New Regime, Lorde plays from behind a screen.

The support singers look like akward nerds dressed like The Beatles in the 60s. Their dresses are the color of the sun. Lorde's look is curated by Karla Welch.

She is really good at switching between her newer songs, with acoustic guitars, and the older ones with electronic bases.

In Buzzcut Season the support singers do a good job providing support voices. Their performance is quite staged, with them turning towards the audience only when they are singing.

It’s in this song that I realized how powerful the voice ensemble is.

Lorde’s songs, like Lana Del Rey’s, seem to describe a lazy life spent on the side of pools, just enjoying oneself.

During the songs she takes time to interact with the crowd, she reflects on what happened in Oslo last week, and she tells about her memories of visiting the city. She also shares how she got rid of stage fright.

A camera films her so that it is possible for everyone in the audience to see her expressions.

A great experience overall.

What can I not say about this queen bee? She's barely 18 years old (birthday in November) and it's exhilarating to watch her evolve. Today's pop music needs a facelift and a lot of us are counting on Lorde. She is currently touring smaller theater venues to get her feet wet. Sure, she could have accepted the offer to tour with Katy Perry and jumped right into the stadium crowd. But this is Lorde, and she already knows that she will be bigger, and she will do it her own way. For those of you who got to see her in theses smaller venues, consider yourself lucky because she will get bigger and bigger and pretty soon it will get harder to get that intimate experience. I'm one of those lucky ones and what I saw was just mind blowing. To me, she almost has that spellbinding Stevie Nicks presence. Her outfit was a simple two piece (with costume changes into different colors) yet she was more seductive than artists who show more skin.

Right now, her live performance is a bit unpolished, but what I saw was a taste of possible perfection to come. Give her two more years to work out the kinks and she will surely bring magic to stadiums across the world!

Shoutout to Lorde for being the most wonderful human being on the planet.. Only seventeen and across the world from her home of New Zeland touring?? Fricken amazing.

So I love Lorde and she made the wait to see her live sooo worth it! She played most of my favorite songs from her album Pure Heroine. The concert was crazy and up beat. Not to mention the awesome lights, fog bubbles, and confetti (WITH HER FACE ON IT) that covered the crowd!!! The venue I was at had GA so everyone was all squished together in an amazing pit of Lorde love and sweat, dancing and having the time of their lives. Definitely my favorite concert I've ever been to and I can not wait until she is back in the area so I can see her again!!! Some fun facts: All of her props that she uses on stage are from her home town in NZ The bass is sooo crazy, be ready! She spent a good six minutes just talking about her life and creating her album (Not gonna lie I was tearin up a little) It was actually the best night of my life

abbison1021’s profile image

Lorde's first of two shows in Berkely 10/2/14 was nothing short of amazing. She sounds just like she does on her record with her powerful vocals. The atmosphere was incredible with her energetic dancing around stage, her multiple costume changes, visually beautiful setup and all around great music quality. She played her entire album along with 2 EP tracks (bravado and biting down), 2 covers (Kanye west and Bon iver), her single song No Better, and what made the night really special was premiering her single she dropped 2 days before Yellow Flicker Beat for the first time live. She reflected on the times she's been in the bay area before and made us all feel special and loved, everything about the show was great I couldn't have asked for a better show, and afterwords she met the fans, myself included making it one of the best concerts I've ever been to. She is incredibly sweet, kind, and talented. I would always recommend for others to see her live show, it'll make them say Praise the Lorde!

Lorde announces Australia-New Zealand Solar Power tour for 2022, release date for new album

By Áine Ryan | 3 years ago

Lorde is set to perform in Australia and New Zealand for the first time in five years.

The 'Green Light' singer, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O'Connor, will kick off her Solar Power tour in New Zealand on February 27 next year before visiting Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. She will wrap up in Perth on Saturday, March 19. See the full dates below.

Lorde also announced in her newsletter that her next studio album will be released on August 20.

The announcement says Lorde will release it in "a first-of-its kind, discless format" to honour "the natural world." See the tracklist below.

Lorde teased an announcement earlier this week when she shared a mysterious video on her website showing her sitting cross-legged on the sand. The video was captioned "SOLSTICE", referring to the Winter-Summer Solstice (June 21 local time), and sent fans into a frenzy.

The Australian-New Zealand leg of the tour is part of this morning's global tour announcement, which includes stops across Europe, the United Kingdom and North America.

Tickets go on sale on Monday, July 5, but there will be a Frontier pre-sale on Wednesday, June 30.

Lorde announces Solar Power tour

The album and tour news comes just two weeks after the 24-year-old New Zealand-born singer dropped her single 'Solar Power' — her first release in four years and the first single from her upcoming album of the same name.

"The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalising the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I'm outdoors," Lorde said recently.

"In times of heartache, grief, deep love or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I've learnt to breathe out, and tune in. This is what came through."

Just Announced: Lorde

lorde tour australia

For the first time in 5 years, formidable pop queen Lorde will return to stages across Australia in March 2022 with her Solar Power Tour.

With the release of her long anticipated new single, ‘ Solar Power’  – her first new music in four years and the first taste of her forthcoming album of the same name (out 20 August), Lorde channels vibrant acoustic vibes and beachside hangs. It’s  a refreshing dip back to organics, a light, summery anthem inspired by the storied folk songwriters of the 60s and 70s and early 2000s pop.

Penned with long-time collaborator and producer Jack Antonoff and with backing vocals from Clairo and Phoebe Bridgers, ‘Solar Power’ has taken the world by storm, NME calling it a “gorgeous, sun-kissed rebirth” and a “quietly but supremely confident return”.

At the age of just 16, Lorde released her first album Pure Heroine, breaking into the international market and later going on to win two Grammy Awards including the coveted Album of the Year. The album peaked at #1 in over 20 countries, including Australia, New Zealand and America and featuring chart topping tracks  ‘Royals’ ,  ‘Tennis Court’  and  ‘Team’ .

With her third studio album, Lorde turns her attention to nature. She says, “The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalising the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors. In times of heartache, grief, deep love or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I’ve learnt to breathe out, and tune in. This is what came through.”

Renowned for her enthralling vocals and commanding stage presence, Lorde never fails to impress on the live stage. Visiting cities across Australia for the first time since her sold out 2017 national tour, don’t miss your chance to catch this epic performer live next year!

The Kiwi queen of pop's Solar Power tour is finally coming to Australia

Nicola Dowse

Time Out says

It's been a hot minute since Lorde last graced Australian shores, but the wait is almost over. Lorde's rescheduled Solar Power tour brings her to Sydney this month (Mar 13-14) to showcase her distinct pop ballads at the Aware Super Theatre at the ICC Sydney .

While Lorde may have burst onto the scene with a dark and almost melancholic style of pop with  Pure Heroine  and  Melodrama , the star's  Solar Power  album is more sanguine.

Lorde has said: "The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalising the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors. In times of heartache, grief, deep love or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I’ve learnt to breathe out, and tune in. This is what came through.”

See Lorde as part of her Solar Power tour in Sydney on March 13 and 14, 2023.

Lorde Announces Special Guests on Australian 'Solar Power' 2023 Dates

The tour dates kick off on March 8, 2023.

pixeltracker

This March, for the first time in six years, global powerhouse Lorde will make her anticipated return to venues across Australia as part of her global Solar Power World Tour. Today, she announces some of the most exciting artists on the indie-pop landscape - MUNA (USA) and Laura Jean (AUS) - as special guests on her forthcoming dates!

LATEST NEWS

Californian indie-pop trio MUNA will make their Australian debut at Sydney WorldPride on 5 March before kicking things off with Lorde at Brisbane's stunning Riverstage on Wednesday 8 March and continuing through Melbourne and Sydney.

Lorde will also be playing the Adelaide Festival. MUNA are again one of her support acts, and the other is unique to Adelaide - singer-songwriter Stellie, who FYI was a 2019 Feature Artist on Triple j Unearthed, releasing her self-titled debut EP in 2021 to much acclaim.

Her 2022 dark-pop and electronica single Violet Girl arrived ahead of her first ever headline shows on the East Coast and Adelaide, after supporting acts such as The VANNS, Cub Sport, Winston Surfshirt, Lime Cordiale and G-Flip.

Known for their impeccable live performances and stellar on-stage charisma, MUNA's live show has been described as "effortlessly captivating and endlessly impressive" (Varsity UK).

Released earlier this year, MUNA's self-titled third studio album is a landmark - the forceful, deliberate, dimensional output of a band who has nothing to prove to anyone except themselves.

Featuring Phoebe Bridgers, album single 'Silk Chiffon' was MUNA's instant-classic cult smash, hitting the grey skies of the pandemic's year-and-a-half mark in 2021 like a double rainbow. Marked by a newfound creative assurance, the band musters their unique powers to break through the existential muck and transport listeners to a place where vulnerability in the presence of those who love you can make you feel momentarily bulletproof, and self-consciousness only sharpens the swell of joy.

Sydney songwriter Laura Jean is revered for the striking beauty of her music and the strength of her piercing, intimate lyrics. She will join Lorde for one special night at Perth's Belvoir Amphitheatre on Saturday 18 March.

Released this year, Amateurs is the brand-new album from Laura Jean. It's a stunning, string-laden offering, set at a mystical midway point between the deep synth-pop of Laura's previous album Devotion (2018) and the folkier sounds of her earlier work.

Praised by fellow artists, critics, and fans alike, Laura Jean has twice been shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize, has recorded with Paul Kelly , The Drones and more, and toured Courtney Barnett and Aldous Harding to name a few.

Released last year to critical acclaim, Lorde's third studio album Solar Power debuted at the top of Australia and New Zealand charts. It sees the artist turning her attention to nature, the record's lead single 'Solar Power' hailed as "her most universal song, hippy in sound and spirit- Lorde conjures its transformational magic anew" by The Guardian.

This March, join Lorde and special guests MUNA and Laura Jean for a sensational night of music. Known for her captivating on-stage presence and enthralling vocals, Lorde doesn't just put on a show, she delivers a sensory experience. Kick your 2023 off right, and don't miss what is certain to be a highlight of the year!

In 2013, a 16-year-old LORDE quietly, yet confidently asserted herself as the voice of a generation with her full-length debut, Pure Heroine. The album would go triple-platinum, win two GRAMMY® Awards, and spawn the certified Diamond, record-breaking, international juggernaut single, "Royals," and quadruple-platinum follow up "Team."

The former cemented LORDE as "the youngest solo artist and the only New Zealander to achieve #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 since 1987." Time exalted her amongst the "Most Influential Teenagers in the World," she landed on Forbes's "30 Under 30" List, graced the cover of Rolling Stone and performed alongside Nirvana during the 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.

She also curated the official soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 and recorded "Yellow Flicker Beat" as the lead single. In 2017 LORDE released her second full-length studio album, Melodrama which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 Chart, making her the first ever NZ artist to land a #1 debut album in the United States.

The album reached #1 in over 45 countries and earned LORDE a nomination for Album of the Year at the 2018 GRAMMY® Awards. In 2021, LORDE made her highly anticipated return with critically acclaimed single, "Solar Power," from her third full-length studio album, Solar Power. Solar Power was released August 20th and debuted at #1 in Australia and NZ and Top 5 around the world including US, UK, Ireland, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain and Portugal.

On release of Solar Power, Lorde released an innovative eco-conscious discless Music box product as an alternative to a CD. LORDE currently has over 14 million albums sold worldwide and over 14 billion streams worldwide.

Speaking to triple j Breakfast, Lorde said about the cheeky photo: “It is funny, I keep thinking ‘Oh, this person that I know has seen my butt.’”

She continued: “It’s a specific experience thinking about everyone in your life seeing your butt. I have no regrets. I love this cover and am happy for this to be how people see my butt.

“I was sent a couple of memes. They were very funny; I liked them. I’m so out of touch with meme culture but I’m down. All the memes!”

Lorde added that she’s “not really on the internet” these days which she “loves”.

“But it does mean I miss a lot and I really don’t know what’s being said about me,” she added. “I like it that way.”

Lorde is coming to Australia next year.

Singer Dua Lipa is returning to our shores for some huge shows – but so far, only fans in two Aussie cities will get to see her.

As Lorde’s highly-anticipated Australian tour edges closer, two stellar support acts have been confirmed.

For the first time in six years, the Kiwi pop superstar will return to venues across Australia as part of her Solar Power World Tour next March.

Beginning in Brisbane on Wednesday, March 8th, Lorde will then perform twice in both Melbourne and Sydney, before concluding the Australian leg in Perth on Saturday, March 18th (see full dates below).

After making their Australian debut at Sydney WorldPride in the same month, rising indie-pop trio MUNA will support Lorde at her Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney shows.

Under Phoebe Bridgers’ Saddest Factory Records label, the three-piece released their self-titled third studio album this year to positive reviews.

And in Perth only, Sydney singer-songwriter Laura Jean will join Lorde for one special performance. A two-time nominee for the Australian Music Prize, Jean released her latest album, Amateurs , earlier this year.

Lorde’s tour is in support of her own third studio album, Solar Power , which debuted atop both the Australian and New Zealand Albums Charts.

“Like Lana Del Rey and Taylor Swift before her, the New Zealand star embraces mellowness on a third album shaded by climate anxiety and a rejection of celebrity,” The Guardian wrote in a positive review, while Pitchfork called Solar Power a “self-aware, scaled-back album.”

After A Lengthy Hiatus Lorde Will Return To The Stage For Australian Tour

Tour dates for "solar power" have just been released.

Lorde

It’s been four years since her last album, but Lorde is back with new music, and an Australian tour lined up for 2022.

In February, the songstress will take her Solar Power tour through her homeland of New Zealand before flying to Australia in March 2022. Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth can expect to be graced with the popstar’s soaring vocals before her she heads to Europe, the UK and North America.

After teasing new music earlier this month, Lorde released the first single off her upcoming record. Sharing its title with the album, “Solar Power” surged straight to the charts and into fans’ pandemic-addled brains.

The hotly anticipated third studio album is pitched to be heavily inspired by our natural environment. Lorde says, “The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalising the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors. In times of heartache, grief, deep love or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I’ve learnt to breathe out, and tune in. This is what came through.”

Lorde hasn’t taken her homage to nature lightly, announcing that the new album will not be available on CD, but rather as a “Music Box” – an eco-friendly alternative. There will also be a personal element as each Music Box will include handwritten notes, photographs, and bonus content.

She told Billboard , “I decided early on in the process of making this album that I also wanted to create an environmentally kind, forward-thinking alternative to the CD. I wanted this Music Box product to be similar in size, shape and price to a CD, to live alongside it in a retail environment, but be something which stands apart and that’s committed to the evolving nature of a modern album.”

The album is slated for release on August 20, while tickets to the Solar Power tour will be on sale to the general public at 12 noon on Monday 5 July from Ticketmaster .

Why is touring harder than ever? Lorde explains "unprecedented" difficulties of live music in 2022

A blonde-haired Lorde in a lavendar top performing live with a silver mic in her hand

  • X (formerly Twitter)

Live music was supposed to be making a glorious comeback post pandemic. But you've no doubt noticed a growing trend of artists feeling the crunch from touring.

Musicians have come out of the devastation of the COVID-impacted years only to face a live music business that's gotten tougher, more expensive, and – realistically – still the source of income they most rely on when other revenues simply don't bring in enough.

It's put stress on everyone from Gang Of Youths and The Amity Affliction to Disclosure , all cancelling shows to protect their mental health, while established acts like Santigold and Animal Collective have cited financial squeezes that make touring no longer economically feasible.

It's a worrying situation and a complex climate that not even a successful star like Lorde is safe from.

In her most recent newsletter, Lorde – who is bringing her Solar Power tour to Australia next year — addressed the current state of the live music industry in a "five minute explainer, cause I think it's interesting, and good to know about if you're going to concerts at the moment," she wrote.

"Basically, for artists, promoters and crews, things are at an almost unprecedented level of difficulty. It's a storm of factors. Let's start with three years' worth of shows happening in one. Add global economic downturn, and then add the totally understandable wariness for concertgoers around health risks"

This oversaturation of shows means there's also a lack of gear that used to come easily. A shortage in instruments, in-ear monitors, and lighting fixtures have been difficult to acquire for even massive names like Coldplay, Milky Chance, and Jack White .

Additionally, as Lorde points out, there's widespread crew shortages struggling to meet the influx of shows. In June, Australia's live music promoters sounded the alarm on a staffing crisis, with thousands of music workers – suppliers, road crew, venues, festivals, and more – reluctant to return to an industry they'd pivoted away from when live music ground to a halt.

Other factors? "Extremely overbooked trucks and tour buses and venues, inflated flight and accommodation costs, ongoing general COVID costs, and truly. mindboggling. freight costs," Lorde writes.

Those issues are further amplified for international acts making the far-flung trip Down Under. Unlike touring Europe and the US, Australia is a case of big landmass, small population. Meaning more costs are put into getting shows from place to place, and relatively less people to play to.

Just think of the massive production values of recent tours from Tame Impala (lasers!), Billie Eilish (screens!), and Gang Of Youths (confetti!). Now think of the eye-watering bills involved with flying in all that fancy gear from overseas, and the costs of trucking it around the nation over a few weeks. It's clear the budget starts rocketing up.

"To freight a stage set across the world can cost up to three times the pre-pandemic price right now," Lorde continues. "I don't know shit about money, but I know enough to understand that no industry has a profit margin that high."

"Ticket prices would have to increase to start accommodating even a little of this, but absolutely no one wants to charge their harried and extremely-compassionate-and-flexible audience any more f**king money."

"Nearly every tour has been besieged with cancellations and postponements and promises and letdowns, and audiences have shown such understanding and such faith, that between that and the post-COVID wariness about getting out there at all, scaring people away by charging the true cost ain't an option. All we want to do is play for you."

Bands have been itching to get back on stage, and for the most part, audiences are showing up to see them. Live Nation, the world's biggest concert promoter, have reported record-breaking levels of ticket sales and attendance – from clubs to stadiums – resulting in a whopping 63% boost in revenue to $6.2 billion.

That's good for Live Nation but not always great for the artists, especially the mid-tier or emerging acts

"For pretty much every artist selling less tickets than I am, touring has become a demented struggle to break even or face debt," Lorde writes. "For some, touring is completely out of the question, even if they were to sell the whole thing out! The math doesn't make sense."

That combination of issues prompted long-running psych pop faves Animal Collective to cancel a string of dates in the UK and Europe in October. It came shortly after Santigold cancelled a US tour behind her first album in six years, Spirituals, sharing a statement that summarised the experience many musicians are going through.

The Avalanches agreed. "Thank you for saying what we are all feeling. It's brutal out here," the Double J Award winning duo wrote in a (since-deleted) tweet sharing Santigold's news.

They added  that British electronic artist Bonobo "draws bigger crowds than us [but] can no longer make it work financially." A day after, The Avalanches cancelled their remaining US and Canada shows "due to serious illness".

All of this is having a major impact on mental health

In the past year, a growing number of high-profile artists have cancelled shows, publicly citing how the touring grind has left them physically and mentally exhausted.

Disclosure , Wet Leg , Arlo Parks , and Sam Fender have all felt the burnout. The Amity Affliction have discussed the "brutal" schedules and expectations placed on performers on the road .

In September, Gang Of Youths frontman Dave Le'aupepe told fans after a cancelled US tour : "I'm getting to the point where the stress of travel, illness and feeling constantly hampered by injuries and physical shit sustained on the road is taking a significant toll on my wellbeing overall."

In her newsletter, Lorde referenced the increase in this kind of messaging and the impact touring challenges presented for musicians, crews, and promoters.

"We're a collection of the world's most sensitive flowers who also spent the last two years inside, and maybe the task of creating a space where people's pain and grief and jubilation can be held night after night with a razor thin profit margin and dozens of people to pay is feeling like a teeny bit much."

How is Lorde coping?

The New Zealand star counts herself lucky. "Profits being down across the board is fine for an artist like me," concluding that she's "doing pretty good."

"You guys have come to the shows in such mammoth numbers (we sold almost 20,000 tickets in London, like what the hell) and not having crippling stage fright hanging over me for the first time is such a f**king blessing that you could tell me I had to cycle from city to city and I'd still be loving it."

"But I'm not immune to the stress — just a month ago I was looking at a show that was pretty undersold and panicking, only for it to sell the remaining 2000 tickets in ten days. Wild stuff."

Lorde has spent most of the year touring her sun-soaked, subdued  third album, Solar Power . Having completed legs in the US and Europe, she's wrapping up in South America this week before jetting to Australia in March .

She's headlining capital cities and a special Adelaide Festival event , her first show in the city since 2014.

She wrote: "I know it seemed extremely sus that the Down Under edition of The Solar Power Tour would ever happen. But it's almost that time! I'm honestly really glad it worked out this way, we're playing so well, and I have so much to bring to these shows now I know it inside out."

Green Day makes grand return to Australia for The Saviors Tour

Profile picture of Julie Cooper

Aussie punk rock fans get excited – Green Day is headed to Australia for its The Saviors tour.

The tour will see the band’s Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool, play just three shows.

Kicking off in Melbourne on March 1st, the tour will then hit up Engie Stadium in Sydney on March 3rd before finishing up at CBUS Super Stadium in Gold Coast on the fifth.

The band has confirmed that it will play its Dookie and American Idiot albums IN FULL. Other songs will, of course, be performed from the band’s new album Saviors as well as a few other hits like Basket Case .

It’s been a long time coming for Green Day fans. The band was meant to perform in Australia back in 2020 alongside Fall Out Boy and Weezer, but COVID got in the way, cancelling the tour.

However, it seems the timing is perfect as the tour coincides with the Dookie album’s 30th anniversary and the American Idiot album’s 20th.

Green Day shared: “We’ve never been more excited to unleash new music than with Saviors, a record that’s meant to be rocked live, together.

“And we cannot wait to return to Australia, it’s been way too long. So let’s thrash.”

The band hasn’t played in Australia since 2017 for its Radio Revolution tour.

Whether you’ve been a fan since their 90s heyday or fell in love with them more recently, Green Day’s live performances are nothing short of electrifying .

Pre-sale begins on September 16, and general sale kicks off on September 20, with Gold Coast fans getting to pick tickets up from 12pm, 1pm in Melbourne and 2pm in Sydney.
