Arriving in Florence by cruise via Livorno

How to get to florence from the livorno (leghorn) cruise terminal.

Livorno is Leghorn FYI: For reasons still unclear, some cruise lines and other travel literature continue to refer to Livorno by its antiquated, Anglicized name left over from World War II: Leghorn. The closest cruise ship port to Florence is Livorno—not that Livorno is actually anywhere near Florence . Livorno is a 90-minute car ride, or 80–100-minute train ride, from Florence .

Livorno is a Renaissance-era port city on the Tuscan coast near Pisa . (In point of fact, the ruling Medici family of Florence built Livorno specifically to compete against the rival city of Pisa .)

You have three options for getting from Livorno to Florence (beyond the ship's own offered connections/excursions). In brief:

  • Public transport : €10–€40 per person. » more
  • Private car/taxi (transfer only) : €40–€170 per person. » more
  • Shore excursion (with guided sightseeing) : €87–€350 per person. » more

How to get from Livorno to Florence by private car (€40–€170 per person)

First of all, do not take a taxi. It'll cost around €170 ($225) per person each way. Insane.

A private car from the cuise port in Livorno to Florence will take about 90 minutes.

You can get a private transfer with our partners at Viator.com for a discounted rate starting around $55 per person one-way or $94 round-trip—though that rate depends on how many are in your party. (The more of your fellow passengers you can get into the car or minivan, the less each person will pay. For just two people, the per-person one-way rate is more like $177, round-trip around $300.)

There are actaully two services: One is cheaper for one-way transfers (arriving or departing), the other is cheaper for round-trip service (for when you just have a single day in port):

  • Round-trip: Livorno Cruise Port to Florence Private Transfer
  • Arrival Transfer: Livorno Cruise Port to Central Florence
  • Departure Transfer: Central Florence to Livorno Cruise Port

How to get from Livorno to Florence by guided shore excursion (€87–€350 per person)

You can also take a guided tour of Florence from the cruise ship with our partners Context Travel or Select Italy:

Or Viator.com (more on the latter below):

How to get from Livorno to Florence by train (€10–€40 per person)

A train is the cheapest option, though not the fastest (all told, if you hit the connections just right, it'll take a minimum 100 minutes, more like 120–140 minutes).

There are one to three trains per hour making the 68– to 100-minute train ride from Livorno to Florence . A one-way, second class ticket costs €9.10.

First, however, you have to get from the ship to the stazione treni (train station) Livorno Centrale, which is not really walkable from any of the cruise terminals at the port.

Getting from the docks to the Livorno train station

A taxi from the Livorno docks direct to the train station will cost you about €20–€30, so get a few people together and the ease and time you save will make it worth it. The ride will take all of 10 minutes.

Many cruise lines offer a cheap or free shuttle to Piazza Grande in the center of Livorno (takes about 10 minutes). Don't bother. This is not near the train station.

If you dock at Molo Mediceo, just walk out of the port, buy a biglietto autobus (public bus ticket) for €1.20 from any newsstand you pass, and head straight up Via Grande to the first bus stop on your right. Hop city bus #1 to the stazione treni in about 15 minutes.

If you dock at the Darsena Toscana, or anywhere else in the hinterlands of the port complex, public transport become more difficult. Just grab a taxi, or if it's offered that free/cheap shuttle to Piazza Grande.

(If you do take your shuttle to Piazza Grande, you can still grab public bus #1 from there; there are newsstands on the piazza where you can buy bus tickets. This adds another 5–10 minutes.)

livorno italy cruise port to florence

This article has been written,  reviewed, and fact-checked  by Rick and I.  We live in Italy  and travel throughout the country to help you make the best choices for your trip. We wrote this piece  to help you have the best trip possible on your next trip to Italy.  Portions of this article have been written using assistive AI tools to help with tasks like research, spell-checking, grammar, and translation.

In this article, you'll learn how:

  • Consider taking the train, bus, or taxi from Livorno to Florence for cost-effective and convenient travel.
  • Spring and fall offer pleasant weather and fewer crowds, making them ideal times to explore Florence.
  • Plan your route, be prepared for potential delays, and purchase tickets in advance for popular attractions. Dress appropriately when visiting churches and savor the local cuisine.

Are you taking a Mediterranean cruise and visiting Florence and Rome for the first time ? Do you want to know how to get there if you arrive by cruise ship? If so, you’ve come to the right place! Rick and I last visited Florence on the Emerald Princess, and I created this article to help make it as easy as possible to visit the city.

About the historic city of Florence

Florence is the capital of Tuscany, Italy, and it’s the most populous city in Tuscany. The city is also the birthplace of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci.

The Romans founded Florence in 59 BC as a military camp called Florentia. It was renamed Florentia Septimana (“Florentia of the Seven”) by Constantius II in 354 AD. Florence became the capital of the Italian Renaissance in the 14-15th centuries. UNESCO declared the Historical Centre of Florence a World Heritage Site in 1982.

Florence—one of Italy’s most stunning and historically rich cities—is a special place. Here are a few Major points of interest that make it worth visiting:

The Duomo is Florence’s cathedral, a fantastic piece of architecture. Filippo Brunelleschi designed the dome and is an iconic part of the cityscape and it took 16 years to build .

The Uffizi Gallery is one of the most famous art galleries in the world, with works by Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Botticelli on display. Notably, there are over 70 museums in Florence, it would be a great experience to visit the others.

The Ponte Vecchio is a bridge over the Arno River that has existed since medieval times. It’s famous for its gold merchants and the fact that it’s the only bridge in Florence to survive WWII bombing raids.

Florence is famous for its truffles and “Fiorentina” steak and has some amazing restaurants. The most famous restaurants are La Lanterna and Il Ponte Vecchio.

If you’re visiting Florence on a cruise, there are some things you need to know first. Cruise ships usually dock in Livorno, about an hour and a half away from Florence.

How to get from the cruise terminal in Livorno to Florence?

How far is Florence from the cruise port? The driving distance between the Livorno cruise port and Florence is 75 miles .

There are several ways to get to Florence from Livorno , but our favorite way is by train. The train ride takes about an hour and 20 minutes to reach Florence Santa Maria Novella Central Station. Buses and taxis are also available, but they can be more expensive and take longer than the train.

Cruise Line Excursion

A cruise line excursion is probably the easiest way to reach Florence from the cruise port of Livorno. If you take an excursion from the cruise line, the ship will wait for you – even if your tour is delayed. However, a cruise line excursion might not be the cheapest option.

Private Tour

Several tour companies can provide you with a tour from the cruise terminal in Livorno to downtown Florence . You can pick a simple transfer from the port or an entire city tour.

The fastest way to travel from Livorno to Florence is by taxi, with a duration of 1 hour and 9 minutes and a cost ranging from €110 to €140. Ensure you negotiate the price before you get in the cab, as rates can vary depending on the time of day. The Taxi ride takes approximately one and a half hours, depending on the traffic. As a result, be sure to know your “all aboard” time, and leave early in case you’re late – otherwise, you might be spending the night in Florence.

Taking the train is definitely one of the best and easiest ways to get to Florence from Livorno. It’s super convenient— the trip only takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to go the 78 kilometers between the Livorno Central Station and Florence. There are tons of trains running this route too, around 42 per day, so you’ve always got options. Tickets are pretty affordable as well, starting at just €10.80. By Bus

Many buses go to Florence, so pick the one that goes to your desired destination. There is a bus stop in Livorno on the same side of the street as the cruise terminal. It’s located at Via S. Maria Della Monica, next to the cathedral.

The buses in Italy are very comfortable and have air conditioning. The bus trip lasts about an hour and a half, depending on traffic. Bus tickets cost approximately 15 Euros each way.

A car on its way to florence from a cruise ship

If you rent a car, take the SGC Firenze – Pisa and follow the signs to Florence. Depending on traffic, the drive will take about an hour to an hour and a half.

However, there are a few things to keep in mind when planning your visit:

Map out your route and allow plenty of time to get there and back.

It’s often jam-packed driving on the road between Florence and Livorno, so plan for potential delays.

If you’re uncomfortable driving in Italy , consider hiring a driver or taking a taxi instead.

Whichever option you choose, be sure to plan and buy your tickets in advance, as they can sell out during busy times.

Best time to visit Florence

There is no definitive answer to when the best time to visit Florence is. That said, there are some factors you may want to consider when making your decision.

It is a popular tourist spot, so there are always people visiting. The cheapest time to visit Florence is during the spring or fall – and it’s our favorite because the weather is mild, and there are not as many tourists. The city can be very crowded in the summer. Some events in Florence in the spring and fall are worth attending.

If you’re looking for good weather, April through October are generally a good bet.

Another factor to consider is what to do while you’re in Florence. If you’re into sightseeing in general, any time of year should work well. However, if you’re looking to do some hiking or want to explore Tuscany’s picturesque villages , you’ll probably want to avoid the colder winter months.

Tips when visiting Florence

Millions of people visit Florence each year, but many don’t take the time to plan their trip, and they miss out on some of the best things Florence has to offer. Consider these suggestions as you explore this charming town.

  • First, the city is very walkable, but it’s also hilly. Expect a lot of stairs! Also, the streets can be narrow and crowded, so be careful when walking around.
  • Make sure you have a good map of the city. Florence is a large city, and it can be challenging to navigate without a map.
  • Have a plan for what you want to see and do. There’s a lot to see and do in Florence, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed if you don’t have a plan.
  • Be prepared for long lines at popular tourist attractions. Florence is very popular with tourists, so be prepared for long lines at places like the Uffizi Gallery and the Accademia Gallery.
  • Take a walk along the river Arno. It’s one of the prettiest streets in Florence and offers excellent cityscape views.
  • If you’re planning on visiting any of the churches in Florence, be sure to dress appropriately. No shorts or tank tops are allowed in most churches.
  • Finally, don’t forget to enjoy the food! Florence is home to some of the best restaurants in Italy, so be sure to try out some of the local cuisines. And if you’re looking to learn more about Tuscany’s food, don’t skip the Tuscan cooking tours!

In conclusion, if you are looking to explore the beautiful city of Florence, Italy, and are arriving from a cruise, there are several options for how to get there. Train, bus, or taxi can take you from the Livorno port to the city. Florence is a popular tourist destination, so book your transportation in advance to ensure you have a seat.

How to Get to Florence from Livorno Cruise Port

Livorno is a port town known as the “Gateway to Tuscany”. While you could spend some time exploring the town of Livorno, the real reason of the stop is to serve as an access point to cities like Florence and Pisa. Upon chatting with passengers on our ship, I also found out that this is a port where a lot of guests choose to stay on the ship. If you’ve been to Florence or Pisa before, you may find the logistics of getting to these cities is not worth the hassle for only a few hours. However, if this is your first time, I highly recommend making the trek! It involves a bit of leg work, but is absolutely doable. It’s a great way to sample Florence for a few hours. Here’s how to get to Florence from Livorno on a cruise ship!

Docking in livorno.

The cruise ship port in Livorno is located here , just outside the town. While it may appear close on a map, you actually are not able to walk off the ship and into town. More on the shuttle bus below, but unfortunately you are limited to that if you want to leave the ship. On the day we docked, the port was really busy with cargo ships, freight, and ferries. I understood why it would actually be a hazard to have cruise ship passengers walking around!

Shuttle Bus to Town

After you disembark the ship, you will immediately be directed into a line to purchase tickets on the shuttle bus. As mentioned, this is the only way into town and you are not able to walk. Unfortunately if you want to leave the ship, you’re required to take the shuttle. The shuttle ticket costs €7 per person for a round trip ticket (both cash and card are accepted). After everyone boards and the bus is full, they will head into town. The ride is short (only about 5 minutes) and will drop you off here , right near the Tourist Information Office . This office is a great resource for all your questions. Whether you are staying local in Livorno or need help getting to other cities in Tuscany. They can help with navigating public transportation, giving advice about timing your trip back, or anything else about the area. They were really helpful!

Public Bus to Livorno Train Station

After you get off the cruise ship shuttle, you will need to take the public bus to the Livorno Centrale train station. Walking to the station is also an option, but it’s about a mile and a half. Your time is better spent working your way to Florence! Only about a 1 minute walk from the shuttle is the stop where you will grab the public bus to the train station. The bus stop is located on Via Grande, right outside H&M, located here . Keep an eye out for the sign pictured above and stand right next to it for the bus to stop. You are waiting for the 1+ bus route. The busses arrive every ~10 minutes and, in my experience, were pretty dependable. When the 1+ bus arrives, board through the front doors where you can pay the driver the €1,20 fare in cash or by tapping your card. The ride is only about 10-15 minutes with stops, and you will stay on until the very last stop, which is right in front of the Livorno Centrale train station.

Important: The public busses in Livorno only allow you to buy one bus ticket per credit card. Therefore, each person in your party needs to pay with a different credit card. If you’re traveling with children, make sure you have a separate card for each person or pay in cash. If you try to tap twice with the same credit card, it will not work.

Livorno Train Station & Buying Tickets to Florence

Upon arrival, you’ll want to head straight for the red kiosks that read Trenitalia. At the first screen, you have the option on the bottom to select a new language to make it easy to navigate through the next screens. Simply click through indicating that you want to purchase a one-way ticket to Firenze Santa Maria Novella (often abbreviated as Firenze SMN)   and select the number of tickets to purchase. Available train times will populate and you can select the next available one. Keep in mind that your tickets are only valid on that time train, and if you miss it you will need to re-purchase tickets for the new train! About 15 minutes before departure, the platform number will populate on the main departure board in the terminal. As soon as that information is available, you can make your way to the train right away.

The Ride to Florence

The ride from Livorno to Florence on the train will last about an hour and a half. Our tickets were timed for an hour and fifteen minutes, both on both journeys in and out of Florence, we were held on the tracks for a bit due to train traffic. Definitely make sure you plan for some of these unexpected stops! The first stop on the train is in Pisa, another popular stop for cruise ship passengers. If you’re pressed for time, you likely won’t be able to visit both Pisa and Florence (and if you had to choose between the two, Florence is the better option). The leaning tower is about a 20-30 minute walk from the train station, and from what I’ve heard, there isn’t much else to do in Pisa. Along the ride, kick back and enjoy the scenic views of Tuscany! We passed by olive trees, vineyards, and stunning villas. It’s a really picturesque ride and you’ll enjoy every minute. Stay on the train until the very last stop, which is Firenze Santa Maria Novella . Not to be confused with the stop right before, which is Firenze Rifredi (which services a northern suburb of the city).

Exploring Florence

All in, it took about 2 and a half hours to get from the cruise ship to Florence. Make sure you keep track of time and leave yourself plenty of time to get back to Livorno! With the time constraints, we had about five full hours to explore Florence. At first, I was pressed thinking that wouldn’t be nearly enough time, but if you are efficient and accept the fact that you won’t get to do everything, you can have an enjoyable Tuscan day! After getting off the train, we beelined it straight for the Piazza del Duomo . The Piazza is home to the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and Giotto’s Bell Tower , both of which are iconic landmarks in Florence! After, make your way down the Via dei Calzaiuoli into the Piazza della Repubblica . Just a short walk from there is the Piazza della Signoria , which is an absolute must-see! This piazza is home to dozens of impressive statues, including an exact replica of David (the original is located in the Accademia Gallery ). Spend some time appreciating the statues, duck into the Palazzo Vecchio , and then make your way past the Uffizi Gallery and walk along the River Arno. Cross over the Ponte Vecchio , which is an iconic bridge home to tons of jewelry shops and enjoy the views along the river. On the other side, you’ll find my personal favorite gelato shop La Strega Nocciola , a store devoted to all things Pinocchio , and a famous wine window at Babae ! There are also a ton of cute restaurants to grab a bite. We stopped at Ristorante Beccafico and I had some killer pasta!

Returning to the Ship

Returning to the ship is as easy as retracing your steps. However, with so many different modes of transportation, make sure you allow yourself plenty of time. After exploring in Florence, make your way back to the Firenze Santa Maria Novella train station and buy your ticket back to Livorno Centrale . The ride is the same time, about an hour and a half. After arriving in Livorno, you will need to take the 1+ bus back to the center of town. The stop is located right in front of the train station, here is an exact pin . Be advised that if you’re within a few hours of all aboard time, you’ll probably be surrounded by other cruise passengers who also got off the train and need to get on the same bus. The busses run approximately every 10 minutes, so make sure you allow yourself time to wait for a bus or two if needed. You will then take the bus to the stop Grande 5, located here . If you ask the bus driver to notify you when you arrive at the cruise ship shuttle stop, they will make an announcement for you. From there, it’s just a quick half-block walk back to the cruise shuttle stop . Keep in mind that the last shuttle leaves central Livorno 30 minutes before the all aboard time. Again stressing the importance of leaving yourself plenty of time!

Florence overview for cruise visitors to the Port of Livorno in 2023

Panoramic photo of Florence, Italy, a major destination for cruises to the port of Livorno

Essential guide to Florence for cruise passengers to Livorno in 2023: the top things to do; shore excursions and how to get to Florence on your own; where to have lunch and shop; and online tours.

By: Editor-in-Chief Updated: May 20, 2023

The medieval charm of Florence is undoubtedly the main reason why cruise ships dock at the Port of Livorno. In fact, most cruise lines promote their itineraries with Florence as a port of call - with Livorno in parenthesis (or vice-versa).

  • Florence and Pisa in one day

Top sites to visit on your own

Dining, lunch and quick bites, shops, shopping and souvenirs, how to get to florence on-your-own, cruise excursions and online tours.

Although most cruise passengers are aware of the fact that Florence is not by the sea, many do not realize that this famous renaissance city is located inland, 56 miles (90 km) East of the Cruise Port in Livorno.

In fact, it takes between 1h 20 minutes and 2 hours to travel between the cruise ship port and the city center of Florence. This is why most cruise ships stay at the Port of Livorno for up to 12 hours.

Naturally, a shore excursion booked onboard or with independent online tours is the most popular way of exploring Florence. But there are other ways to enjoy a day in Florence that can be more affordable and enjoyable.

Traveling by train is without a doubt the most affordable way. Hiring a Taxi is the most convenient and expensive. Renting a Car can be a challenge if you are not familiar with Italian fast driving, high traffic, and where to park in Florence.

Florence and Pisa in one Day

All cruise lines offer tours (or shorex as excursions are called when booked onboard a cruise ship) to both Florence and Pisa.

These shore excursions are very popular, but cruise passengers should know that besides being long and tiring, you will not have much time in Pisa to see more than a few attractions.

Usually, on these combined excursions, tour buses stop within walking distance of Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa so that cruise passengers can admire the vast square where the Leaning Tower, the Cathedral, the Baptistery, and the Cemetery (aka Camposanto) are located. You will have time to walk around and even to shop for souvenirs.

Some tour guides may take you inside the Cathedral or the Baptistery but do not expect to visit all four highlights at leisure.

Certainly, you will not have enough time to walk up to the Leaning Tower, to visit museums, and even less to explore other highlights of Pisa like the Piazza dei Cavalieri.

Things to do in Florence on a cruise to Livorno

Although the historical center of Florence is not particularly large, the sheer number of great sites to visit can be overwhelming. At best, cruise passengers docking in Livorno will have up to 6 hours to explore the city and, consequently, never enough time to see it all.

Cruise excursions always try to cover some top highlights, but whatever is visited will never be fully explored.

The good news is that when traveling to Florence on your own, and especially if you have been in the city before, you will have the opportunity to focus on a few sites, enjoy lunch (or a quick bite) and even enjoy some unusual shopping.

Walking the streets of Florence is the best way to enjoy the city's ambiance in historical landmarks like the Piazza della Signoria, the Ponte Vecchio or the Piazza della Repubblica.

Palaces like the Palazzo Vecchio (Old Palace), the Galleria degli Uffizi, the Palazzo Pitti are highlights amongst numerous buildings of stunning beauty most of which are home to world-famous museums.

What to see on a shore excursion

Here is a list of the top sites in Florence, which you will most probably visit on a guided shore excursion:

  • Cathedral, Bell Tower and Baptistery
  • Piazza della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio and Loggia dei Lanzi
  • Galleria degli Uffizi
  • Ponte Vecchio
  • Galleria dell’Accademia
  • St Croce Church

There so many museums in Florence that you should not attempt to visit more than one or two, and make sure to choose carefully what to see as you will not have enough time to see more than just part of a collection.

Likewise, there are so many religious sites, almost all them with something special to see, that it makes no sense to try to see it all. With so much to see in Florence, our advise is to focus on a couple of sites at best and not try to see it all.

The following are landmarks, religious sites and museums skipped by shore excursions and that you will only be able to visit if exploring Florence on your own:

  • Palazzo Pitti and Boboli Gardens
  • San Lorenzo, Medici Chapels, Laurentian Library
  • Santa Maria Novella church
  • Santo Spirito church
  • Orsanmichele
  • Great Synagogue
  • Bargello Museum
  • San Marco Museum
  • Duomo's Museum
  • San Miniato al Monte church
  • Davanzati's Palace Museum
  • Galileo's Museum
  • Horne Museum
  • Stefano Bardini's Museum
  • Stibbert Museum
  • Marino Marini Museum
  • Salvatore Ferragamo Museum

Regardless of how the cruise traveler decides to explore Florence (on your own or on an excursion) lunch (or a quick bite) is a must. Florence is one those cities where gastronomic choice is abundant both in price and variety. This is a city where you will find the Enoteca Pinchorio (one of the best restaurants in Italy with 3 Michelin stars) but also unique and delicious street food, excellent cafes to have a panini, and everything in between. Instead of touring Florence on an organized excursion, cruise visitors may prefer to explore the city without a guide and with the freedom to discover different sites.

Traveling Time Distance: 56 miles (90km)

Many savvy cruisers will state that Shore Excursions booked with the Cruise Line are, at best, a waste of money. Other seasoned cruisers will not go on an excursion that is not organized by the cruise line. There are good arguments on both sides and, in the end, it all depends on how confident you feel to book with an online tour service like Viator or Shore Trips.

Shore Excursions

If you have never been in Florence before, all cruise lines offer basic tours of the highlights of Florence with 'Free-Time' for Lunch and shopping. Besides the combo with Pisa (already mentioned), you may choose from many other tours designed for the specific interests of the cruise traveler.

Florence on your own shore excursion

All cruise lines do offer an affordable shore excursion usualy titled "Florence on Your Own", or something similar. This is a bus transfer to Florence, but without a tour guide, so that you can explore the city at your leisure.

Independent and Local Tour Operators

IQCruising is not affiliated in any way with any of the following independent tour operators. We certainly do not endorse these organizations but believe the info (and links) on these paragraphs may be useful to make a well informed choice.

8 Best Things To Do In Livorno Cruise Port | Port Overview

Leghorn - Livorno - Venice Quarter

Nestled on the northwest coast of Italy, the city of Livorno is the main gateway to Tuscany and its iconic cities of Pisa and Florence.

It is one of the major cruise ports in Italy together with Civitavecchia (Rome), Naples, Venice, and La Spezia , often included in the Mediterranean cruise itineraries. In this article, read about:

  • Livorno port (Livorno cruise terminal, getting around, helpful info)
  • 8 best things to do in Livorno Italy & Livorno shore excursions (including day trips to Florence, Pisa, Lucca, Cinque Terre, Volterra, San Gimignano, and Siena)

Livorno Cruise Port

The cruise port of Livorno is one of the largest seaports in the Mediterranean and the third-largest port in Italy.

Livorno cruise ship terminal consists of two main parts: Porto Industriale (or Porto Nuovo – New Port) in its northern part, and Porto Mediceo (part of Porto Vecchio – Old Port) in the south, closer to the Livorno downtown.

Livorno cruise port map

1. Porto Industriale – Industrial Port

The majority of cruise lines dock at Porto Industriale , the large container and cargo cruise terminal located in the northern part of the harbour.

It consists of 3 main berths that can accommodate 3 large cruise vessels at a time. It is also possible to dock at several other piers, so in total the port can accommodate up to 8 ships simultaneously.

The new Livorno cruise terminal, Alto Fondale (located at Calata Punto Franco) is mainly used by ferries and cruise ships doing turnarounds in Livorno.

The industrial port handles heavy traffic and is usually very noisy, as that is also a ferry terminal offering ferry transportation between Sardinia and Corsica and the mainland. Guests are not allowed to walk around the port, so a complimentary shuttle service to the main port entrance is provided.

The shuttle bus will drop you off at the terminal building by the port entrance where cruise passengers can find an ATM, a tourist information office, car rentals, taxis, tour operators, and free Wi-Fi internet.

In front of the ship, guests can find only taxis and a tourist information kiosk. Here you can take a paid shuttle bus to the city center (the drop-off point is Piazza Grande, the main square). Tickets for this shuttle can be purchased in cash right before boarding the bus, and the ride takes less than 10 minutes.

If you are taking a cruise line-organized shore excursion, your tour buses are parked outside the terminal building.

However, if you have booked a trip with an Independent tour operator, your transport will be waiting for you at the port entrance near the terminal building and you must take the free shuttle to get there.

2. Porto Mediceo

Porto Mediceo (a historic Medici port) is located in the southern part of the Livorno harbour and is dedicated to smaller cruise ships/yachts. It has 2 berths, located within 10-15 minutes walking from the city center. In the cruise terminal, you will find a tourist information kiosk, taxis and car rental service.

Getting Around Livorno Port

  • The official currency in Italy is EURO (€). Major credit cards are widely accepted. Small businesses though will only take cash.
  • The easiest way to get to Livorno city center is by a paid shuttle bus that picks you up at the terminal building and drops you off at Piazza Grande. From there, you can explore the city of Livorno on foot.
  • If you plan to get to the train station ( Livorno Centrale ) you can take the shuttle to the city center and then take bus #1 in front of the Duomo (Cathedral) to the Livorno Centrale train station. You can buy the bus ticket at Tabacchi – Tobacco shops , and you will find several of these at the place where the shuttle bus drops you off (in Via Claudio Cogorano and Via Grande streets). You can also purchase the tickets at the newsstands. You will find the bus stations on Via Grande, the street in front of the Cathedral and Piazza Grande Square.
  • The bus ride from Piazza Grande to Livorno Centrale takes only 5 minutes. Once you arrive at the Livorno train station, you can take trains to Pisa, Florence, Lucca, and other places. If you are not in a hurry, you can also walk to the station and the journey takes around 30 minutes.
  • If you are planning to use the train services during your visit, make sure to check the train schedules and always have a backup plan, as you never know when trains can go on strike. You can check the timetables and fares on Trenitalia.com
  • You can also take a taxi to Livorno train station directly from the cruise terminal, and the ride takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes.  This is a convenient option since 6 people can fit in a taxi.
  • Taxis are also available outside the terminal. A ride from Porto Industriale piers to Livorno city center lasts approximately 15 minutes, however, many taxi drivers won’t agree to drive you to Livorno as most of them wait for the passengers who want to travel further – to Pisa, Florence, or elsewhere.
  • Public bus – Livorno has a reliable bus network and is well-connected to other places in Tuscany. The two main bus routes in Livorno are LAM BLU (LB) Bus Route (or Bus #1), and LAM ROSSA (LR) Bus Route (or Bus #2). You can use both to get to the Livorno Centrale train station. If you are docked at Porto Mediceo, there is a bus stop within walking distance from the port and you can catch the LAM BLU bus to go to the city center.
  • Livorno Hop on Hop off bus tours are available every hour and they depart from the shuttle bus stop at the cruise terminal. The whole circuit takes 60 minutes and the audio guides in multiple languages are available.
  • Pisa International Airport is the closest airport to Livorno. It is located approximately 22 km/14 miles (a 35-minute drive) northeast of Livorno cruise port. Another airport is Florence Airport which is located 90 km/56 miles (a 1h 15-minute drive) northeast of the port.

1. Livorno Sightseeing

If you decide to stay closer to the ship, do not miss the opportunity to visit the city of Livorno because it has a lot to offer! Once the shuttle bus drops you off at Piazza Grande, you can explore the majority of Livorno city attractions on foot.

The entrance to the city from the port already speaks well of its history, because one of the first things you will come across is Fortezza Vecchia , an imposing medieval fortress with three defensive bastions that were built in the 16th century.

Further on, the Cathedral of San Francisco (Cattedrale di San Francesco), also known as Duomo, dominates Piazza Grande and Via Grande, the main street that connects the old port (Porto Mediceo) to Piazza della Repubblica .

The Cathedral was constructed in the early 17th century and represents a remarkable example of Renaissance architecture, boasting valuable artworks and a beautiful interior. It had a turbulent history as it was completely demolished during World War II bombings, only to be restored in the 1950s.

Duomo Cathedral - Livorno port

There are also a few other Livorno highlights not to be missed:

  • Jewish Synagogue – located only 2oo m from the Duomo, the new synagogue was built in the 1960s to replace the original one that was destroyed in World War II.
  • Venice Quarter (Quartieri Venezia) – Less than a 10-minute walk north of the Cathedral, close to the Livorno cruise port, you will come across this historic quarter that kept its original look as it wasn’t destroyed in the WWII bombings. Often referred to as the Venezia Nuova district, with its channels, bridges, colorful facades and ancient buildings, this part of Livorno will throw you back to Venice. In the vicinity, you will find the Church of St Catherine (Chiesa di Santa Caterina) and Fortezza Nuova – an imposing ancient fort dating from the early 17th century.
  • Central Market (Mercato Centrale) – Known as Mercato delle Vettovaglie, this market is one of the favorite local spots and a famous landmark of Livorno. Housed in an ornate 19th-century building, this is the best place to shop for fresh products and feel the authentic Italian spirit. Ground coffee, fresh pastries, cheeses, meats, seafood, bread, wines, oils, fruits, and vegetables… over 200 stalls and shops await you for a unique local experience!
  • Civic Museum “Giovanni Fattori” (Museo Civico Giovanni Fattori) – Approximately a 30-minute walk (or 10 minutes drive) south of Livorno city center and Porto Mediceo, and a 15-minute drive south of Porto Industriale, art lovers can visit this exceptional art museum dedicated to Giovanni Fattori, a 19th-century artist born in Livorno and a leader of ‘Macchiaioli’ artistic movement. In the gallery, you can visit the remarkable collections of his paintings, as well as the artworks of other Macchiaioli painters.
  • The Four Moors (Monumento dei Quattro Mori) – Dominating Piazza Giuseppe Micheli and Piazza del Pamiglione, this extraordinary monument overlooks Porto Mediceo dock and sits at the beginning of Via Grande. The marble and bronze monument was erected in the early 17th century and commemorates Medici Grand Duke Ferdinando I’s victories over the Ottomans.
  • Mascagni’s Promenade (Terrazza Mascagni) – A 30-minute walk south of Porto Mediceo and the city center, this immense chessboard promenade square offers outstanding views of the harbor and the sea. Besides numerous cafes and eateries, here you can find a gazebo, benches to relax, and Livorno Aquarium featuring Mediterranean marine life. Book your Aquarium ticket here !

Thanks to its legendary Leaning Tower, Pisa is one of the most famous cities in Italy known all over the world.

Located in the Field of Miracles (Campo dei Miracoli), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the spectacular Leaning Tower is surrounded by the Pisa Cathedral (Duomo di Pisa), the cemetery (Camposanto) and the Baptistery – considered the most beautiful example of Romanesque architecture.

Besides its extraordinary landmarks, The Field of Miracles is packed with cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops.

Field of Miracles - The Baptistery, Pisa Cathedral and The Leaning Tower of Pisa

The tower was originally built as a bell tower for the Cathedral but never fulfilled its purpose due to its faulty design and loose soil beneath it.

Undoubtedly, climbing the most famous Tower in Italy is among the main experiences of your trip to Italy, but please consider that you will need to climb 300 spiral steps to the top.

It is strongly recommended to purchase tickets at specific times selected in advance to ensure your place in line. For security reasons and conservation of the Tower of Pisa, visitors can climb in groups of 40 people with shifts of 35/40 minutes. Kids under 8 cannot climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa due to safety reasons.

It takes 5-10 minutes to reach the top, depending on your pace, so you can admire Pisa and the Field of Miracles for about 30 minutes.

Unfortunately, there is no elevator inside the tower to accommodate wheelchair users, however, you can admire the beauty of the tower from the outside and take the iconic picture holding the tower. Check out more information on the Tower of Pisa official webpage

How to Get to Pisa from Livorno Port?

  • Train – You can catch the train from Livorno Centrale train station to Pisa Centrale; the train runs every 10-15 minutes, and the journey to Pisa takes 15 minutes. The train station in Pisa (Pisa Centrale) is approximately a 20-minute walk from the Field of Miracles.
  • Public bus – The buses to Pisa depart from Piazza della Repubblica, the square located a 5-minute walk from Piazza Grande in Livorno. You will need bus #10 which runs every 30 minutes, and the ride to Pisa lasts approximately 1 hour. Once you arrive in Pisa, the bus will drop you off at the bus stop near the railway station, so you can either walk to the Field of Miracles or take a local bus to get there.
  • Taxi/Private Transfer – A taxi ride to Pisa from the cruise port in Livorno takes around 30 minutes (the distance is 25 km/15.5 miles. Taxis in Italy are quite expensive (make sure you inquire about official prices at the tourist information desk) so a better deal is to book a private transfer .
  • Shore Excursion – Cruise lines offer different tour options to Pisa – some of them include the entrance fee to the Tower, others a guided tour and free time at the site, or just the transfers. You can either book with your cruise line or explore Independent tour operator offers.

3. Florence

Known as the cradle of the Renaissance thanks to its remarkable architecture, and historical and cultural heritage, Tuscany’s capital is a must-see place if you are visiting Tuscany for the first time.

Although you need at least a couple of days in Florence to properly visit the city, the best way to explore Florence is to take a guided walking tour along with a knowledgeable guide, who will share the local stories and take you to the most interesting corners and hidden gems of the city.

If you decide to come on your own, keep in mind that for most of the museums and landmarks you need to purchase the skip-the-line entrance tickets  in advance.

Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore - Florence

Here are some of the must-see places in Florence:

  • If you are an art lover, you should visit Uffizi Gallery , and Galleria dell’Accademia (which houses the original Michelangelo’s  David ) considered some of the most renowned museums in Florence. Be prepared for the long lines, especially during the summer months. Some other museums and art galleries to consider are Palazzo Vecchio , Palazzo Pitti , Palazzo Strozzi , Casa di Dante Museum , Casa Buonarroti (Michelangelo’s Museum) among others.
  • At the beautiful Piazza della Signoria Square dominated by the imposing Palazzo Vecchio, you can see a replica of Michelangelo’s David, and the statues of the great artists of Florence.
  • The 13th-century Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore) located in Piazza del Duomo is the most striking structure in Florence with its red-tiled Dome – the symbol of Florence. The Cathedral is majestic and in addition to enjoying its external beauties, it is worth visiting the Cathedral’s interior and climbing to the Dome to enjoy an incredible panoramic view of the city.
  • Basilica of Santa Maria Novella is a remarkable 15th-century basilica and the city’s main Dominican church featuring famous frescoes by Gothic and Renaissance masters.
  • The famous Baroque Porcellino fountain (Fontana del Porcellino – the bronze fountain of a boar) is located in the 16th century Market Square (Mercato del Porcellino) and is a mandatory stop for those who want to return to Florence. Tradition says that if you touch the boar’s snout you will surely return.
  • No visit to Florence is complete without a stop at Ponte Vecchio (old bridge). Take your time to admire it from a distance or walk through and visit one of the shops – the jewelry on the bridge is not cheap, but looking at the jewelry does not cost anything!

Ponte Vecchio - Florence

How to Get to Florence from the Port of Livorno?

  • Shore Excursion – Florence is located 90 km/56 miles from the port of Livorno, approximately a 1-hour 30-minute drive. Due to the distance and the limited time in port, I strongly suggest you take an organized shore excursion, either from the cruise line or a reliable tour operator.
  • Train – You can take the train from Livorno Centrale to Firenze Santa Maria Novella station. The train runs 2 or 3 times per hour, and the journey takes 1h 20 minutes (up to 1h 40 minutes). Once you get off the train, you’ll be in front of the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, and in less than a 10-minute walk you can reach The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.
  • Taxi/Private Transfer

If you are already familiar with Pisa and Florence then head over to Lucca, one of the few Italian cities that has kept all the medieval splendor of its historic center intact.

Known as the city of 100 towers and 100 churches, it contains historical and artistic sites that deserve to be visited.

The city is famous for being surrounded by a wall built between the 16th and 17th centuries that has remained intact, and it is the birthplace of two of the greatest Italian musicians, Luigi Boccherini and Giacomo Puccini.

Stroll through the beautiful elliptical-shaped square, Piazza Anfiteatro , built on top of an ancient amphitheater from the 2nd century AD.

See the monumental church of San Michele in Foro with its 13th-century façade decorated with intricate details and its huge statue of the Archangel Michael at the top.

San Michele in Foro - Lucca

The Guinigi Palace (Palazzo Guinigi) and Guinigi Tower (Torre Guinigi) are must-see attractions, especially if you look for spectacular panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains. You can climb 230 steps of this 14th-century brick tower and admire some great views of Lucca from the picturesque garden at the top.

Torre delle Ore (Torre dell’ Orologio) located only a few minutes walk from Guinigi Tower, is the medieval clock tower and the tallest tower in the city from the top of which you can see the entire city of Lucca.

The most interesting thing about this tower is the manual clock mechanism, which can be observed in detail while climbing. Throughout the old town, you will find signs that indicate a tour of the city; I advise you to follow them as they will allow you to find the monuments easily.

How to Get to Lucca from Livorno Cruise Port?

  • Train – The distance between Lucca and the port of Livorno is approximately 50 km/30 miles (a 55-minute drive). The most convenient and affordable option is to take the train from Livorno Centrale to Pisa Centrale and then change train to Lucca. The train runs twice per hour, and the whole one-way trip takes around 1 hour.
  • Taxi/Private Transfer – A taxi ride takes around 45 minutes.
  • Shore Excursion – Cruise lines and independent tour operators offer shore excursions to Lucca.

5. Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre (“five towns”) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a national park that consists of five fishing villages perched high up on the cliffs of the Italian Riviera approximately 110 km/68 miles north of Livorno.

The beauty of the colorful medieval villages can best be admired by boat, which allows visitors to take in the breathtaking views of the villages and the dramatic coast of northwest Italy.

Cinque Terre - Riomaggiore village

The villages of Riomaggiore , Manarola , Vernazza , Corniglia , and Monterosso al Mare boast rich history and traditions as they date from the Middle Ages, and they are interconnected by trails so you can explore them on foot, or by hiking.

There is also a train that runs every few minutes between the villages, which allows travelers to easily move from one village to another.

Another wonderful place to visit is Portovenere , a medieval coastal village located south of Cinque Terre.

Although it isn’t officially part of Cinque Terre, the village is equally beautiful and often included in the same itinerary and Cinque Terre shore excursions. I wrote about Cinque Terre in detail in my article: Day Trip to Cinque Terre and Portovenere from La Spezia Port

Portovenere harbour

How to Get to Cinque Terre from Livorno Port?

  • It takes at least a 1-hour 30-minute drive one way to reach the first village of Riomaggiore from Livorno cruise port and due to the distance, not all the cruise lines offer shore excursions to Cinque Terre. Cinque Terre is more easily explored from the port of La Spezia , but in case you decide to visit it from Livorno, the best way would be to either book a shore excursion or a round-trip private transfer .
  • The train is not a convenient option as it would take you at least 2 hours one way to get to the villages, including changing one or two trains (at Pisa Centrale and La Spezia Centrale). You would need to carefully plan your day according to the train timetables and the ship’s scheduled time in port.

6. San Gimignano

Nestled in the heart of the Tuscan countryside and the Chianti wine region in the province of Siena, San Gimignano is another hidden gem of Tuscany boasting stunning medieval architecture.

The distance between San Gimignano and Livorno port is 83 km/52 miles and it takes a 1h 30 minutes drive to get there.

San Gimignano is a small walled hilltop town also known as the Town of Fine Towers due to a dozen of preserved tower houses. The town boasts beautiful Gothic and Romanesque architecture, churches, medieval fortifications, great local cuisine, and delicious wines.

San Gimignano panorama

The main San Gimignano highlights are the Colegiata (Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta); the Church of Sant’ Agostino;  the Communal Palace (Palazzo Communale, the Town Hall) located on Piazza del Duomo and home to the town gallery; Palazzo Vecchio del Podestà;  the Cistern Square (Piazza della Cisterna, the main town square); Torre Grossa (54m, the tallest tower); Salvucci Tower (Torri dei Salvucci); and a few others.

How to Get to San Gimignano from Livorno Cruise Port?

  • It takes around a 1-hour 30-minute drive one way to reach San Gimignano. Some cruise lines offer shore excursions, however, most of them include stops at other places in Tuscany (Siena) which means that you won’t have much time to spend in San Gimignano.
  • You can either book a shore excursion or private round trip transfer , or you can rent a car, which is a great option as there are a couple of car parks outside the walls of San Gimignano where you can leave your car for a fee.
  • You can also take a train from Livorno Centrale to Poggibonsi-S.Gimignano (with 1 change at Empoli). The ride takes around 1 hour 40 minutes.

With its historic center protected by UNESCO, medieval architecture, a great number of museums, galleries, and a long history of banking/commercial activities, Siena is the capital city of the province of Siena located 130 km/81 miles (a 2-hour drive) southeast of Livorno port.

It is one of the most visited cities in Italy, and if you decide to spend your day in Siena , you should carefully plan your itinerary so you don’t miss out on the top attractions.

Some of the must-see highlights include the imposing Campo Square (Piazza del Campo, the main square), the Tower of Mangia (Torre del Mangia), the 12th-century Siena Cathedral (Duomo di Siena) overlooking Piazza del Duomo, Santa Maria in Provenzano Church , the 14th-century Gothic Palazzo Salimbeni dominating a large Piazza Salimbeni , Siena Synagogue …

Siena - Campo Square and the Tower of Mangia

How to Get to Siena from Livorno Port?

  • Some cruise lines offer shore excursions to Siena, however, these excursions normally include stop at either San Gimignano or other places in Tuscany.
  • Due to the distance between the Livorno cruise port and Siena, it’s advisable to either book a shore excursion, private round-trip transfer , or rent a car. The traveling time to Siena is approximately 2 hours each way.
  • You can also take the train from Livorno Centrale to Siena; the train runs once per hour, and you will need to change the train in Empoli. The ride takes at least 2 hours.

8. Volterra

Located around a 1-hour drive from Livorno cruise port (72 km/45 miles), the mountaintop town of Volterra is known for its rich history and the ruins dating from the Etruscan, Roman, and Medieval periods.

While there, don’t miss out on visiting some of the main Volterra highlights: the Roman Theater of Volterra (Teatro Romano di Volterra) dating from the 1st century BC; Piazza dei Priori (the main square) dominated by Palazzo dei Priori , the 13th-century Town Hall building; Volterra Cathedral (Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta) with its marble entrance and a gilded coffered ceiling; the Etruscan Museum “Mario Guarnacci” , and the remains of the Etruscan Acropolis (Acropoli Etrusca) among others.

Volterra - Italy

How to Get to Volterra from Livorno Port?

  • Some cruise lines offer shore excursions that include a stop in Volterra, however, if you want to go on your own, the best option would be to either rent a car or book a private transfer . The ride takes approximately 1h 10 minutes each way.
  • You can also take the train from Livorno Centrale to Volterra-Saline-Pomarance train station (including 1 change in Cecina). The ride takes up to 1 hour 30 minutes. Once you get off at the Volterra-Saline-Pomarance, you will need to catch a local bus #780 and ride for another 25 minutes.
  • If you decide to go by train, you need to carefully plan your day because there are only a few trains running per day, and the local buses are not frequent. I suggest you book a shore excursion, either with your cruise line or a reliable tour operator, as you will avoid all the hassle with the local transportation.

Getting from Livorno to Florence and back

Ship itinerary says we'll be ported in Livorno from 7 am to 7 pm.  Thinking of taking train to spend the day in Florence.  What is a reasonable time to expect to get off the boat (NCL if it matters) and be at the train station?

Not having been on a cruise in a LONG time, I wasn't sure what the earliest reasonable time might be to walk off the boat....if not taking an organized cruise tour, can we walk off close to 7 am?   We intend to take a taxi once off the boat to the train station...is a 8 am train doable or 9 am more likely?

Would you suggest other transport method for trip? Train would be approx 24 euro each way (12 E per person).

If the  ship  is scheduled to dock at 7am, it is quite likely you will be able to get off withing a few minutes of that time. You might even be off before 7. Where is the ship coming from? I ask because the last time we were there we were sailing from Rome...we actually docked at about 1am.

An 8am train is very doable.

Actually it does matter - or at least it used to.

Whilst all (?) cruise lines offer a shuttle service to the city centre, that's not convenient for the rail station.

NCL I think are the only cruise line which also offers a shuttle service to the train station - or at least they used to. That would make a train around 8 to 8.30 very do-able.

Sorry, I've said "used to" twice. That was pre-Covid, I don't know if that's changed things.

NCL Epic ?

We were on the Epic in Sept 2019.  I can't answer your question .....we're not early risers so at 7 we would have been heading to bfast.

Rather than mess with a shuttle to the port entrance then a city bus to the train depot, we decided to pay for the NCL shuttle directly from the ship to the train station. It was $25pp I believe. Well worth it if you have busy plans for the day! Hopefully it is still offered.

Thanks, maple leaves, sounds like a great option and will check it out.   We will go with whatever gets us to train station the quickest to maximize our time in Florence.

The quickest and most convenient option would be a "Florence on your own" transfer from your cruise, but it would also be the most expensive choice.

Celebrity has just changed our itinerary on Reflection.  Instead of stopping in La Spezia we will now be stopping in Livorno.  Arrival set for 10am and departure set for 7pm.  Looks like it takes approx an hour and 20 minutes to travel between Livorno and Florence.  Visiting Florence sounds more appealing than the “Tuscan Farmhouse” excursion we had planned.   🤔

We are also on the Reflection (April TA) and are looking at going to Florence with the port change.  Looks like we will be able to DIY by that date.  We have read that a local company bus round trip might be a better option than a ship tour.  1. Much cheaper about 75 ish Euro for two round trip and 2. More time in Florence with no required leather shop stop.  We would rather not mess with the train.  In our experience train stations in Italy are challenging even with no luggage. Has anyone here had any experience with Tuscany Bus, maybe booked through Viatour or directly?

alwayscruisetime

Pre-Covid we had no trouble getting to Florence ourselves from the ship.  The trains were reliable, safe, and by doing it ourselves and hustling off the ship at the earliest opportunity, we were in Florence long before any other group from the ship made it.  Easy and cheap if you have no mobility issues.  The same for the return.

Hope it is the same for you now.

We are on the NCL Epic in June.  Livorno port, there will be buses to take us from boat into the city.

The Port is a working port and we cannot disembark on our own,  you must take the buses provided.

We have booked a transfer to Florence from Livorno with Get your Guide.  The bus leaves where we will be dropped of the bus from the boat.  This is for return trip back to meet the bus in the afternoon going back to the boat.  The cost in AUD is $55 return,  map, english speaking info given on the bus,

In the past we took the Florence on your own train trip from Livorno to Florence.  Had a short walking with the guide and then on our own.  Dont have to stay with the guide which we did not.  While it may have been more than DIY, we did not have to get to train station to get the train and the reverse on the return.

prefer this much more than the bus version they offer(ed) on a previous trip as there was a stop at a leather factory instead of more time in Florence.

Does any one here know if the tour buses can come directly to the ship for cruise line booked excursions in Livorno.  This would be compared to taking a shuttle bus out of the port to get on the tour bus that will go to Florence.  We are on the Celebrity Reflection April 2022.  It would see easier if the tour bus picked us up at the port so I wondered.  We have found that Tuscany Bus which we were planning to used does not operate on May 1st the day we are docked in Livorno so we are considering other options.  The leather factory stop and higher prices (even at 25% off pre cruise) are negatives to the X excursion.  If they pick us up at the port that would be a plus along with the on time return guarantee.  I am looking for input from someone who has done this excursion.  Also wondering if there is a separate shuttle out of the port and then another shuttle to the city center in Livorno.  Thanks

Never having been to the port of Livorno, I am interested in how someone would get off the boat at the dock and travel to the section of Livorno where the train station is.  It sounds like one can't just walk off the boat and take a taxi or walk to the Livorno train station.  I haven't been able to confirm if NCL will provide a shuttle - if they do and we'd have to wait an hour or more for the bus to go, we'd rather get to the train station earlier on our own and get on the first train heading to Florence.

We would like to take the train into Florence - mostly because we enjoy the train and also to avoid any road traffic delays a bus or car might encounter.

If anyone has input on fastest and best way to get to Livorno train station, please share! Thanks.

euro cruiser

You are stuck waiting for the ship shuttle bus, you can't walk out on your own.

In years past NCL offered a shuttle bus to the train station, which would be ideal because the in town drop off point for cruise buses is at Piazza Municipio, about a mile and a half from Livorno Centrale station.

The fastest option would be if there are taxis available at the ship, sometimes there are, sometimes not.  If there are they may or may not want to take the short ride to the station vs. a longer fare.  If they will take you the going rate used to be 25 euro, one way.  For that you could cram others into the taxi with you but with current Covid restrictions that may not be possible.

Ah, thanks so much for the info Euro Cruiser....even if it is the bad news that we cant walk off the ship and into town on our own.

But when you say " taxis available at the ship" sometimes  do you mean portside or that they would be in Piazza Grande, where a NCL shuttle would drop off people in Livorno and  then from there we'd need to get to the train station?

this would be ideal!  just need to understand best and fastest way to get to the train station in Livorno once boat docks, and then at end of day in Florence from Livorno train station back to the boat.  Is bus needed to get to where ship is docked?

You are taking NCL right? They are the only cruise line that runs a shuttle to/from the train station so you should have no worries. However, I'd confirm that this is still available post-COVID.  It was standard for years before that.

Yes, as per earlier posts by EuroCruiser and myself, NCL have provided shuttles direct from the ship to Livorno centraal  - and that makes life so much easier for their independently-minded passengers.

But as we've all said, you need to check whether that's still valid.

Taxis were right where we got off the ship but they were also available where the shuttle bus dropped off in town.

Livorno Italy Port Guide

Livorno, Italy is one of the largest commercial ports of call along the Mediterranean Sea, a gateway to beautiful Tuscany or any number of Mediterranean cruises . On cruises to Livorno, Italy, be sure to explore La Venezia, a Venetian-style canal district in the historical center of the city dating back to the Medici era.

Tuscany itself is a destination like no other, boasting a seemingly-impossible mix of ancient and new, rolling hillsides and industrial skylines, the juxtaposition of slow living in remote fishing villages with the masterworks of Renaissance art and architecture you’ll find in Florence and Pisa.

Travelers can meander through Livorno for a taste of modern, coastal Tuscany before continuing on to destinations like Pisa, Lucca, Florence, Cinque Terre, and the vast Chianti wine region. On your Tuscany cruise, dock in Livorno and be in Florence in just two hours.

Only a little over an hour from the port of Livorno is Pisa, a highly-visited town known for its Gothic architecture, home to the vibrant University of Pisa, and of course, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which remains famously tilted since construction finished in 1372.

On your Tuscany cruise, you’ll find the city’s reputation precedes it. Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance, home to the largest Franciscan church in the world, the Basilica of Santa Croce, and one of the world’s most culturally, artistically, and intellectually significant cities.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to tuscany (livorno).

Florence, or Firenze, is a must-see destination for any art or history-lover while on your Tuscany cruise, and thankfully only a few hours away from the port of Livorno. Florence glows from afar with red brick, teeming with cathedrals. You’ll be in good company among paintings and sculptures by da Vinci, Botticelli, Brunelleschi, Michelangelo, and others. Spend full days exploring the Duomo Santa Maria del Fiore or taking in the masterpieces housed at the Uffizi Gallery. Stroll along the Arno River and the Ponte Vecchio, stopping into one of the many storefronts for a coffee or much-deserved gelato.

A short train ride from the port of Livorno is Pisa, known worldwide because of a certain leaning tower. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is just one of the four buildings that make up a cathedral complex called Campo dei Miracoli or Piazza dei Miracoli (the “Field of Miracles”), where striped marble overlooks a sprawling green lawn. Though Pisa suffered extensive damage during World War II, restoration efforts preserved many of its incredible sights. Now, Pisa is considered one of Tuscany’s university towns, an intellectual and architectural hub.

Cinque Terre

It’s no secret Cinque Terre is having a cultural moment—what once were five unnoticed fishing villages are now among Italy’s top sights. Cruises to Livorno, Italy provide easy access to this famous chain of villages. Since cars are banned, Cinque Terre’s curved paths and alleys are best explored on foot. Brightly colored homes, steep terraces overgrown with vineyards and flowers, and plentiful fishing harbors give Cinque Terre a remote, rustic feeling despite its recent boom in tourism.

Northwest of Florence and slightly north of Pisa, you’ll find Lucca, a perfect day-trip fortravelers who love historic piazzas and basilicas. Unlike Florence and other cities in Italy, Lucca preserved the walls protecting its historic city center, maintaining priceless artifacts from the Renaissance era. Walk along and admire the nearly complete footpaths as you plan your next stop to the botanic garden—the Orto Botanico Comunale di Lucca— or stop in one of its hundreds of churches.

Top things to do in tuscany (livorno), walk 463 steps to the top of the duomo.

The Cathedral di Santa Maria del Fiore, known as the Duomo, is instantly recognizable, designed unlike any other cathedral in the world. This massive Gothic cathedral was  built during the 14th century, and the red-tiled cupola was designed by Brunelleschi himself. The Duomo is described as a must-see by experts and travelers alike, and entrance to the church itself is free for everyone. Purchase a ticket to scale the dome or see the crypt.

See Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia Museum

Home to the original statue of Michelangelo’s David, it’s no surprise the Accademia is Florence’s most visited museum behind the Uffizi Gallery. Come for the David, stay for the extensive, unsurpassed collections of 15th and 16th century paintings.

Walk Across the Ponte Vecchio

The Ponte Vecchio, or Old Bridge, was the only bridge across the Arno River in Florence until 1218, and saw repeated destruction and damage throughout history. During World War II, it was the only bridge across the Arno that the Germans did not destroy completely. Don’t miss one of the most resilient sights in Florence.

Take a Boat Tour in Cinque Terre

Even after the cruise ship has docked, you can continue your nautical journey in Cinque Terre by taking a boat tour in a small gozzo boat, a traditional wooden boat that can hold up to six passengers. You’ll experience a view of the five fishing villages of colorful Cinque Terre unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

Culture & History of the Livorno Cruise Port

Though Livorno may be a popular port city for passing through, its history is fascinating in its own right. During the sixteenth century, the Medici family contributed to the development of the sea post by ordering construction of new bastions and features to fortify the port. Many of these features are still in place today, giving Livorno the a rustic appearance but a modern, industrial spirit.

Each August, Livorno’s La Venezia quarter hosts its annual summer event: the Effetto Venezia, where families gather for music, theater, performances, crafts, and food. Effetto Venezia has showcased the culture of Livorno for over thirty years.

Livorno Port Facilities & Location

Most of the port area is industrialized, with ferries connecting the mainland to Corsica and Sardinia. The Livorno cruise terminal, called Alto Fondale, is mainly used by ferry passengers, and cruise ships often dock away from the cruise terminal building.

There is free WiFi in the terminal building, and you’ll find WiFi offered at many bars and restaurants. After leaving your ship, you will find shuttle buses and taxis are available to bring you to the Piazza Grande in the city center, and beyond.

and Shore excursion

To Get to Pisa

Shopping Near the Livorno Cruise Port

Looking for souvenirs? Livorno has shops of all varieties and price points near Via Grande, which crosses the historical center of town and is accessible via shuttle bus from the port.

Find even more shopping in neighboring Florence or Pisa, where designer leather goods, silk scarves and ties, glass arts, and more gifts are widely available.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

Italy’s currency is the Euro, and while credit cards tend to be accepted in most places, carry a little cash to cover a meal, a coffee, or a taxi ride should you need it. Tipping is not required at restaurants in Italy. Instead, there will be a 1-3 euro charge automatically added to your check called a “coperto,” which covers the tablecloth, silverware, and bread. Tipping cab drivers or hotel porters is not typical, but appreciated.

Port Livorno cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Livorno, Florence-Pisa, Italy. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Livorno (aka Leghorn) is a port city on the Ligurian Sea, located on the western coast of Italy's Tuscany region. The city has population around 160,000. Port Livorno (locode ITLIV) is Tuscany's principal port as well as the cruise port to four provincial capital cities - Pisa (approx 25 km / 16 mi away), Lucca (~50 km / 30 mi), Firenze/Florence (Tuscany's capital, ~105 km / 65 mi to the east), and Siena (~130 km / 80 mi).

Livorno is the principal cruise port to Florence/Pisa. However, as an alternative port to these popular tourist cities is sometimes used Carrara , from where Florence and Pisa are also accessed via shore excursions/bus tours.

Port Livorno

Livorno is one of the biggest seaports in Italy and the Mediterranean Sea. It serves various types of ships, including cargo carriers, container ships , passenger ships ( ferries and cruise liners). Several heavy-traffic regularly scheduled ferry services are provided by the companies Corsica-Sardinia Ferries (to Golfo Aranci Sardinia  and  Bastia Corsica ), Grimaldi Lines (to Barcelona Spain and Tangier Morocco ), Toremar (to Capraia Island), Moby Lines (to Corsica Island's ports Bastia and Olbia ).

In the end of 2013 was approved a plan for expanding Livorno's passenger port (that serves the ferry and cruise shipping traffic). The project included both piers (Alto Fondale, Calata Orlando), providing 3 more dedicated cruise berths (for vessels with LOA length 300+ m / 984+ ft) and infrastructure development (relocating commercial berths to separate cargo and passenger traffic). The first phase of the port expansion project was completed in 2017. All works are expected to be completed in 2022-23. Until the project's completion, commercial piers will still be used for cruise ship docking.

In November 2015, the Port introduced its shoreside-power supply system (by Nidec Corporation, Japan) providing up to 12 MW electrical power for berthed vessels. The system can support mid-sized cruise liners (with passenger capacity 1000-2000) which usually dock at Sgarallino Pier. The project cost EUR 3,5 million, and was 80% funded by Port Livorno. By 2018, the company Enel (Italy's manufacturer and distributor of electricity and gas) increased the Port's shore-power capacity up to 45 MW, allowing cold ironing services to ships berthed at other piers, as well as capacity to supply larger vessels.

Port's statistical data for season 2016 showed a total of 404 cruise ship calls and 810,000 passengers - about 16% increase over 2015. Season 2017's data showed a 10% decrease (over 2016) in ship visits.

In 2017, the cruise port had scheduled a total of 349 ship calls and handled around 700,000 passengers. Season 2017 featured 6 new cruise vessels (making maiden calls) and 3 ships doing partial turnaround (optional embarkation / disembarkation in Port Livorno):  AIDAperla  (17 calls),  Silver Muse  (5),  Seabourn Encore  (5),  Majestic Princess  (4),  Viking Sky  (2),  Norwegian Joy  (1 call),  MSC Armonia  (17 partial turnarounds),  Arethusa  (16 partial turnarounds),  Hebridean Sky  (1 partial turnaround).

In 2018, the port had scheduled 362 cruise ship calls with around 730,000 passengers. Also in 2018 was completed cruise port's privatization (started in 2017), with MSC Cruises being one of its owners.

There are plans for port developments (budgeted EUR 90 million) for building 4 new berths and terminals with capacity to handle world's largest passenger ships . These plans also include building new facilities providing shore-side power and LNG bunkering. Port's max draft is 15 m (49 ft) and its access channel is wide enough to accommodate big-sized liners.

Starting operations in January 2019, Port Livorno has Mediterranean's largest container  crane ("Model 8 Mobile Harbor Crane"). Built by Konecranes Gottwald lift AGV, the huge crane has max lifting capacity 200 tons, operational radius 12-16 m and hoising heights 12-54 m (below-above quay level). It can serve boxships and ConRo vessels (RoRo-boxship combo transporting TEUs, wheeled cargo and vehicles). The new crane is diesel-electric (power output 1 MW) and can be hooked-up to the terminal's power grid.

In March 2022, Port Livorno contracted for dredging and other works SIDRA (Societa Italiana Dragaggi, subsidiary of DEME Group). Besides dredging, the project includes the construction of Europa Dock, port expansion works (expanding the berthing line with ~3 km / 1,9 mi), coastal defense works (building two new breakwaters - North and South, plus relocating the Meloria breakwater/total breakwater length 6 km / 3,7 mi). Scheduled to start in 2023, works will deepen the Port's access channel (to 17 m / 56 ft), the internal basins draft (to 16 m / 53 ft), and also lay the new breakwaters' foundations. The contract's value is yet to be revealed but, reportedly, it's over EUR 150 million.

Livorno cruise terminal

Currently, the cruise port has 3 berths (close to Pisa International Airport) and can handle 3 large-sized ships at a time. Extra berthing is available at other piers, offering priority docking for passenger shipping vessels. In total, the port can handle 8 cruise ships simultaneously. Smaller-sized vessels berth within walking distance to downtown (Old Fortress).

Livorno's new Alto Fondale cruise terminal is located at Silos Granari Calata Punto Franco. The facility is used only by ships operating on roundtrip itinerariess from Livorno (turnarounds). It is located approx 0,5 km from the city center. Two big airports are located close to the cruise port terminal - Aeroporto di Pisa (13 km / 8 ml) and Aeroporto di Firenze (Florence, 80 km / 50 ml).

Large cruise ships to Livorno dock at port's container terminal. From there is provided shuttle bus service (terminal to Piazza Grande). Depending on cruise company, this service is at additional charge or complimentary. Taxis at the terminal are also available. The nearest railway station is approx 3 km (1,9 ml) or about 5-min bus drive. Bus shuttles stop at the train station too. At the terminal, cruise passsengers can purchase bus and train (roundtrip) tickets to Pisa, Florence and Lucca. Trains from Livorno to Pisa depart every 30 min.

In the end of 2013 was approved a 3-year plan for expanding the cruise port. It included the whole Alto Fondale and Calata Orlando piers, and provided 3 more cruise ship dedicated berths for larger vessels (with length over 300 m / 980 ft).

Port's future expansion involves a huge investment for redesigning of its infrastructure in order commercial berths to be relocated, so cargo and passenger shipping traffic to be separated. This project's first stage will be completed in 2017. By the year 2022 all should be completed, but the commercial piers will still be used by cruise ships in the meantime.

In the near future, Port Livorno will offer LNG bunkering at a new (dedicated) cruise terminal just 20 km (12 ml) away from the cruise port. The port autority company announced in July 2016 that they are considering the option to use the LNG plant to refuel LNG-powered cruise ships . This way Livorno will join the seaports offering LNG bunkering (liquefied natural gas). Close-to-port LNG supply service will allow vessels to bunker directly - without using LNG barges or trucks to provide them with fuel.

Best Mediterranean cruise shore excursions

Fran Golden

Shore excursions in the Mediterranean highlight must-see experiences such as fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Sites. However, some of the wonders you travel to see — the ruins of Pompeii, the Roman Colosseum and Michelangelo's "David" in Florence — are nowhere near the pier where your cruise ship will dock. The easiest way to get to them is with tours sold by your cruise line, which typically include the services of tour guides who are destination experts.

Some Mediterranean cruise passengers choose to do an excursion in each port and see every major attraction, but it's also fun to take time to explore on your own . If you go the independent route, do some research and pick a port where your preferences — beachfront, cafes, boutiques or other attractions — are close to the pier.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

While excursion offerings vary by cruise line, here are our picks for the best shore excursions in the Mediterranean.

Full-day tour of Athens, from Piraeus, Greece

The port of Piraeus, Greece, is about 7 miles from Athens, a fascinating city with both ancient and modern attractions. You can use taxis or public transport to get into the city, but you're better off booking a tour with a licensed guide who will get you to the key sights and provide details about the city — the birthplace of democracy and Western thought. Half-day tours will take you to the famous Acropolis. However, we recommend a full-day excursion so you can see and experience more.

Europe's oldest capital dates back to 3000 B.C. Grab a window seat on the bus to see the hilltop Acropolis dominating the skyline, as it has for thousands of years. On the tour, you'll explore its sacred buildings, including the Parthenon, the beautiful, columned temple dedicated to the goddess Athena.

Related: Best Mediterranean cruises you can book

Your tour will also show off other sites throughout the city, including the ruins of the Temple of Zeus and Hadrian's Arch, Greece's impressive Parliament building and the Olympic Stadium. You'll have the opportunity to dine on Greek cuisine (lunch is included in full-day tours) and shop for souvenirs on the narrow ancient streets of the lively Platka neighborhood.

Pick a tour that includes time at the Acropolis Museum, a modern museum full of ancient treasures, such as statues dating back to the 5th century B.C.

Best of Olympia tour, from Katakolon, Greece

livorno italy cruise port to florence

Katakolon, Greece, is a small town with a nice strip of beach — and a landmark attraction about an hour away. Cruise passengers make the trip to ancient Olympia to see the site where the Olympic Games debuted in 776 B.C. A tour of the ruins of the religious center and sports complex includes the Temple of Zeus, Roman baths, gymnasium and swimming pool, as well as the first Olympic stadium. Three thousand years ago, the games took place every four years, after the summer harvest, with competitors coming from as far away as Italy and Asia Minor.

The short foot races were the most prestigious of the events, and you can imagine the roar of the crowd as you stand in the field where the races took place. Your tour will likely include a stop at the Archaeological Museum of Olympia to see some amazing artifacts, including bronze and stone statues of well-toned athletes.

Palace of Knossos tour, Crete

Wherever you dock in Crete, in the Greek islands, you'll want to visit the ancient Minoan palace of Knossos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dates to the Bronze Age.

First settled around 7000 B.C., the religious and administrative center was the domain of King Minos and home of Zeus and Europa, according to Greek mythology. Tour the ruins, some partially rebuilt, to learn about the labyrinth built to contain the Minotaur (half man and half bull) and how a queen had running water in her bathroom more than 3,000 years ago.

Your tour might also include a stop at the Archeological Museum of Heraklion, which houses Minoan artifacts removed from the palace site.

'Game of Thrones' tour, Dubrovnik, Croatia

livorno italy cruise port to florence

You can take a shuttle from the pier and tour Old Town Dubrovnik on your own, but if you are a fan of "Game of Thrones," the must-do is a guided tour that highlights sites that appeared on the HBO TV show. As fans know, Dubrovnik doubled for King's Landing, the fictional capital of the Seven Kingdoms.

The tour includes stops at the formidable 11th-century Lovrijenac Fortress, high on a rock overlooking the sea, just outside the medieval walls that surround the Old Town. The fort provides incredible views of Blackwater Bay, which is featured in novelist George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" books, the inspiration for "Game of Thrones."

In Old Town, you'll climb to and walk along the defensive walls that appeared on the show in the Battle of Blackwater Bay, as well as in other scenes. Other GOT sights in Old Town include the Jesuit Staircase, where Cersei began her Walk of Shame (Season 5) and an area near St. Dominic Street, where market scenes for the show were filmed. Elsewhere, the outside of the Ethnographic Museum Rupe might look familiar. It appeared on the show as Littlefinger's brothel.

Rome city tour, from Civitavecchia, Italy

The port closest to Rome is Civitavecchia, Italy. Getting into the city can take 1 1/2 hours (or less or more, depending on traffic). It's a good idea to book a full-day excursion to make the most of your time in the city — especially if you are determined to see St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel, along with the Roman Colosseum, Roman Forum, Circus Maximus, the Forum, the Pantheon and other sights. Tours might also stop at Trevi Fountain, where tossing a coin is said to ensure your return to Rome.

Some tours combine one marquee site and free time. If you are going this route, we recommend you go with the Colosseum, an amphitheater that once held as many as 50,000 spectators and where you can well imagine life in ancient Rome in all its (gory) glory.

Make sure to also climb Palatine Hill for views of the city, which has something fascinating — a flowing fountain, a gelato stand, a designer handbag shop — practically around every corner.

Florence city tour, from Livorno, Italy

If you want to explore Florence, look for cruises calling in Livorno, Italy, or another port in Tuscany. From there, you'll take a bus ride into the city, known for its Renaissance treasures. The city itself is a visual treat; a shore excursion will ensure that you see such key sights as Michelangelo's "David," in all his polished marble naked glory (at the tickets-required Accademia Gallery).

Art lovers will want to choose a tour that includes the Uffizi Gallery, with its works by Botticelli, Donatello, Raphael, da Vinci and other Renaissance artists. Your tour will also showcase the 15th-century Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (aka the Duomo) and other architectural treasures in the city. Some tours also visit the university town of Pisa, famous for its Leaning Tower.

Ancient Pompeii, Capri and Sorrento tour, from Naples, Italy

It's not difficult to imagine life in ancient times while exploring the remarkable ruins of Pompeii, the ancient Roman city buried by ash from Mount Vesuvius in the year 79. The ruins — the forum, baths, temples and decorated villas — appear frozen in time.

You can focus all your attention on Pompeii. However, we recommend a full-day tour from Naples that also showcases the stunning Amalfi Coast and the beautiful island of Capri — a typical combination would be Capri, the resort town of Sorrento and Pompeii.

You'll take a jetfoil to Capri and a funicular ride up to Capri Town, a shopping haven (with residential side streets well worth exploring). Back on the mainland, drive to Sorrento, with time to people-watch at an outdoor cafe. On the way back to Naples, stop by Pompeii for a guided tour of the ruins.

Gaudí and the Sagrada Familia tour, Barcelona

livorno italy cruise port to florence

In Barcelona, you dock right in the city. Las Ramblas, the city's famous boulevard, is a long walk or quick shuttle bus ride away. For us, the must-do shore excursion is to see the extravagant creations of architect Antoni Gaudí, including his La Sagrada Familia Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where construction has been ongoing since 1882. The cathedral is the most visited attraction in Spain.

Choose a tour that also takes you to the hillside, UNESCO-recognized Parc Guell, where Gaudí sought to combine nature with modernist architecture. You'll also see two Gaudí residential buildings on the Paseo de Gracia — the La Pedrera apartment building and Casa Batllo, a private home with an especially eerie-looking facade.

Some tours also stop at Museu Picasso, which features early works by Pablo Picasso, in the city's Gothic Quarter (Barri Gotic).

Ancient Ephesus tour, from Kusadasi, Turkey

A favorite of those who love to explore ancient history, Ephesus is one of the most fascinating and best-preserved ancient cities in the world (and only a short drive from the Turkish resort town of Kusadasi).

In Ephesus, you walk the same marble streets as the ancients to sites that include a bathhouse, massive amphitheater and the jaw-dropping remains of a two-story library building facade, looking at columns, mosaics and monuments along the way. Greeks, Egyptians and Romans all ruled in Ephesus, but most of what you see today was built by the Romans. Outside the library, carved in stone, is early marketing asking whether you prefer to visit the library or a house of pleasure (an age-old question).

Longer excursions combine a tour of the ancient city with a visit to the House of the Virgin Mary, a modest chapel built on the spot where the Virgin Mary is believed to have spent her last days — a sanctioned pilgrimage site. There's also a second pilgrimage site in the area, St. John's Basilica, where St. John wrote the fourth book of the New Testament.
