At first, we weren't planning on taking the trolley tour. We were at the Mosaic museum and that was our focus, but when it was recommended by one of the drivers it sounded too good to pass up. This is especially true because we intentionally include history in our travels. The tour did not disappoint. We were provided with the history of the island and a really interesting part of that included what happened during the Gilded Age and the industrial revolution. Wealthy New York families such as the Rockefellers discovered the beauty of the island through connections. A hunting club was formed with a very small number of elite. But I will leave that to the tour guide to go into more detail. We were able to see some of the houses now vacant which are mansions by most of our standards. Funnily enough, their owners considered them humble cottages where they would " rough it" part of the year. The tour offered the opportunity to walk through one of those humble cottages and see the beauty inside, as well as providing a window into how they lived. It was very impressive. We also were shown the beauty of the island itself. The golden Isles, as the islands that are in this part of Georgia are called are incredibly beautiful and perhaps not as well known, though that seems to be changing. Tourists are starting to find this haven as a welcoming destination. One of the buildings which we passed by we later went back and toured ourselves. This was called Faith Chapel. The island occupants were small in number, but members wanted a church where they could go and worship. They tried to keep the denomination fairly ambiguous so that no one would feel left out. The chapel includes two beautiful stained glass windows purposely placed on the east and the west sides of the church to catch the light of the rising and setting sun. One of the windows is a Tiffany window. The other was created by a father and daughter team. Their last name was Armstrong. Both windows were beautiful, but we actually preferred the one by the Armstrongs. If you like visiting beautiful churches, as well as taking in more local history on Jekyll Island, we recommend this tour.

We made reservations online for this tour as they do book up when there are conventions in town. Online, there's a small service fee. You can also reserve tickets at the Mosaic museum. This was an hour guided tour on an open air tram. The tours depart from the Mosaic Museum. The tickets include entry to the museum. Our original scheduled tour at 10:30 am was rained out due to lightening, so we visited the museum at leisure. Luckily we were able to join the next tour at 11:30 am. Tours usually leave hourly starting at 9:30 am with the last tour at 3:30 pm. Depending on the time of your tour, you will also get entry into one of the historic cottages. The cottages vary. Our tour guide was wonderful -- very informative and easy to hear. This is a good intro to the island and the background of the Jekyll Island Club and it's famous members. Just a note, this tour is better suited to adults as opposed to a children's activity. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour (and museum) and felt it was well worth the money ($20 pp) spent.

William was seen as a great leader of the growing colony, and he was a top military aid to General Oglethorpe. At this house and on his land, William Horton grew different crops and brewed the first beer in the state of Georgia. You can walk through the remains of the home and explore the grounds as well. From 1790 until 1886, the house was occupied by the DuBignon Family, and their family cemetery is on the home nearby. For history lovers, visiting this site is one of the best things to do in Jekyll Island as it is among the oldest tabby buildings in the state.

Jekyll Island Historic District

Nestled among the ancient live oak trees on Jekyll Island is the island's iconic National Historic Landmark District , a 240-acre site filled with 34 historic structures. Explore on your own or take a guided tour as you step back in time and imagine what life was like on Jekyll Island during its Gilded Age heyday.

History of the Jekyll Island Historic District

Visitors have been attracted to the serene beauty of Jekyll Island for centuries. The island was purchased in 1886 as a private winter retreat for many of America's wealthiest families, including the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Pulitzers and more. The Jekyll Island Club was built as the island's exclusive clubhouse and was the site of many elegant events, leisure activities such as croquet and tennis, and was also where the first transatlantic phone call took place!

Members of the Jekyll Island Club built "cottages" for their families to enjoy while visiting Jekyll Island, many of which have been carefully restored and are open for tours today. The opulent and spacious vacation homes provided a place for these elite families to enjoy the island's natural landscape and mild winter climate. Learn more about each of the cottages here.

The fear and uncertainty of major events such as The Great Depression and World War I & II caused Jekyll Island Club members to abandon their beloved Georgia island. The state of Georgia purchased Jekyll Island in 1947 and opened the island as a state park a year later. Over time, the forlorn Jekyll Island Club was lovingly preserved and renovated, and officially reopened in 1987.

Things to Do in the Jekyll Island Historic District

Biking in the Jekyll Island Historic District

Biking through the Jekyll Island Historic District truly feels like a step back in time. Cars are prohibited from several of the paved pathways, making the experience even more safe and leisurely. Rent a bike, or if you're a guest at the Jekyll Island Club Resort , bike rentals are available there as well.

Begin your bike route at the fork where Riverview Drive and Stable Road split, continuing onto Riverview Drive. Stick to the paved sidewalks as this road is also used by vehicles! As you make your way north on Riverview Drive, you'll pass several of the beautiful, historic buildings on your right, including Moss Cottage, Goodyear Cottage, Mistletoe Cottage and Indian Mound Cottage. The Jekyll Island Club Resort sits in the middle of the district, and on the backside of the main building, you'll come upon Crane Cottage , Hollybourne Cottage and Villa Ospo. Circle behind Villa Ospo to connect onto Old Plantation Road, where you'll continue to loop back through the Historic District. You'll pass Villa Marianna on your left - slow down or stop for a quick break to admire the beautiful fountain and gardens! This is a perfect place for an Insta-worthy photo-op. Next up is Cherokee Cottage, followed by Faith Chapel . From there, you can easily bike over to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center or Mosaic, The Jekyll Island Museum for more exploration and indoor fun.

This entire route is about a mile and a half, and is all on flat, paved terrain, making it a very easy and enjoyable ride! Access a map of the Jekyll Island National Historic Landmark District to see an overview of the area.

This Otherworldly Georgia Beach Is Consistently Rated As One Of America's Best

Driftwood Beach

When it comes to destinations in Georgia, big cities like Atlanta and Savannah undoubtedly cross visitors' minds. However, what they might not realize is that the Georgia coast is home to magnificent islands offering a slice of paradise in the Peach State. This includes Jekyll Island. Located less than two hours from Savannah, it was once a vacation haven for the uber wealthy of America's Gilded Age.  This little known Georgia island boasts pristine beaches but one in particular stands out: Driftwood Beach. In 2024, Driftwood Beach came in at number eight on Tripadvisor's Travelers' Choice Awards for Best of the Best Beaches in the United States.

Likewise, Tripadvisor has Driftwood Beach listed as the top thing to do on Jekyll Island. So, what makes it so special? Visitors will find driftwood trees scattered throughout the shore, making for a magical sight to behold. "What a surprise to walk on to the beach and see miles of actual dead trees that had become weathered, some uprooted, and battered by erosion over many years. It was almost unearthly to see the beauty and stark contrast to all the lush growth on the rest of the island," said one Tripadvisor reviewer.

Another stated, "Very haunting and beautiful at the same time." If you want to experience Driftwood Beach for yourself, parking is available and is free. In addition, leashed dogs are welcomed. However, don't just come to Jekyll Island for Driftwood Beach, there is much more see and do.

Fun things to go on Jekyll Island

Georgia Sea Turtle Center

Although Driftwood Beach is a must-visit on Jekyll Island, it's not the only attraction it has to offer. In fact, this destination is ideal not only for beachgoers, but for wildlife and history enthusiasts. For instance, at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, visitors of all ages can learn more about the state's sea turtle conservation efforts . Several Tripadvisor reviewers say that one of the highlights is viewing the staff administering care to these endangered creatures. The Georgia Sea Turtle Center is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day. Admission can be purchased online .

Then there's Mosaic a Jekyll Island Museum that primarily focuses on the island's Gilded Age history. It features exhibits with clothing, artifacts, and more. Like the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, Mosaic is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Those who wish to acquire more knowledge of this aspect of Jekyll Island's past can opt for the one-hour Landmark Trolley Tour. It takes visitors to the island's historic district to view and enter the homes once owned by the affluent. Tours depart daily from Mosaic but are seasonal. Even better? If you purchase a ticket for the Landmark Trolley Tour, you can visit Mosaic at no extra charge. Bear in mind that these attractions are all under 10 minutes from Driftwood Beach.

If Driftwood Beach and Jekyll Island sound like your perfect beach vacation, you can stay at Villas by the Sea Resort . It's located a stone's throw away from Driftwood Beach and offers apartment and condo-style lodgings with kitchens. Hence, it's ideal for families or for those traveling in larger groups. The smallest unit available is a studio villa and the largest is a three bedroom villa. Amenities include a pool, playground, and a restaurant appropriately named the Driftwood Bistro.

If you're looking for a more traditional hotel layout, there's also a Holiday Inn Resort nearby as well. This property is designed to be family-friendly and kids even eat free, a plus for budget-minded travelers. There's a pool that overlooks the ocean and pet-friendly options for those traveling with their furry friends.

Of course, Airbnb is another option for finding accommodations. One guest favorite is this  one bedroom apartment that is minutes away from Driftwood Beach. Prices average about $200 per night and it can sleep up to three guests.
