jugal himal base camp trek

A leisurely day in Kathmandu for an exciting tour around Kathmandu and Nepal's famous landmarks. The tour guided by our expert cultural guide, takes you to places of great historical and religious interest of both Hinduism and Buddhism. Kathmandu city and the valley steeped with World Heritage Sites, of Old Durbar Square (old palace). The Swayambhunath Stupa of more than 2,500 years old with the Holy Hindu Temple of Pashupatinath and a large dome Buddhist Stupa of Bouddhanath. After an interesting tour back at the hotel for final preparation and packing for Jugal Himal Base Camp Trek. Some items and clothing not required for trekking can leave in the hotel to store. Including valuables can be stored in the hotel's safe deposit or with the Visit Himalaya Treks office.

After having a good breakfast, depart from the hotel for a long and interesting overland journey, towards the east of Kathmandu Valley. The first few hours of drive on a pleasant scenic highway reaching Dhulikhel old town. From Dhulikhel enjoy panoramic views of the Central and Eastern Himalayas with Jugal and Langtang Himal range. The drive heads down to much warmer areas through farm villages and towns, from Panchkhal town. Our journey diverts leaving the main road and heading north to Melamche Bazaar, a large spread-out town. Possible lunch stop as time permits, and then drive leads up on winding hilly dirt rough road reaching Thulo Bhotang. A nice village of mixed hill tribes of Tamang, Sherpa, and Magar with few Newar, Chettries, and Bharamins. The villagers seldom see a few foreign trekkers on this route, our first overnight tented camp is set on a farm yard. Having time to explore the village and observe the local culture, from here on our route leads to a completely isolated high country.

The first-day trek of the adventure begins after clearing the camp and having breakfast prepared by our camping cook. The walk starts with a climb heading up to Tupi Danda through a lovely cool forested path. The forest is lined with tall rhododendron, pines, and fir trees as uphill continues past a few Kharka (cattle herder temporary summer shelters). Taking a slow pace due to gain in altitude then finally the walk ends on reaching a nice grassy meadow. Where our overnight camp is set at Nosyampati amidst beautiful woodland.

A leisure day at Nosyampati for acclimation before reaching the higher region towards Panch Pokhari and Jugal Himal base camp. An ideal height for rest and a short hike up the hills for the best views of surrounding dramatic landscapes and snow-mountain range. Nosyampati is also a summer pasture and grazing field for local villagers’ cattle. Enjoy the serene setting within a pristine location with only the sound of nature and birds.

The morning after a good breakfast, today's walk is fairly short compared to the previous day. However the steep climb makes the day quite longer, start the morning with uphill to cover more than 400 meters. The climb gets quite steeper in some sections but rewards you with exceptional views of the Jugal Himal mountain range.

The climb leads higher within the forest and then a short descent reaching Panch Pokhari and the five simmering ponds. Located on a scenic valley beneath towering peaks Himalayan massifs of Gauri Shankar (7,134 m), Jugal Himal (6, 535 m). Includes Dorje Lakpa (6,966 m), the scenery is absolutely stunning against the great contrast of green forested hills.

Panch Pokhari means five ponds, a holy pilgrimage site for the Hindus. During the mid-monsoon wet months of July or August on a full moon, a religious fair takes place. Thousands of Hindus and some Buddhists pay homage to this holy spot for prayer and worship. As well as taking a bath in the holy ponds to clean the sins and bad omens of hundreds of lifetimes.

Panch Pokhari is also on several routes of famous Himalayan destinations towards Jugal Himal Base Camp. As well as towards the famous Langtang Valley via Tillman’s Col, the pioneer who explored the areas in the early 1950s.

On leaving the camp at Panch Pokhari, our route leads towards Jugal Himal Base Camp, heading straight north. A steep climb for a few hours leads to a crest and a ridge top above 4, 400 m high. Facing outstanding views of surrounding landscapes with Panch Pokhari down below with Jugal Himal range of peaks towards north direction. Slowly the walk descends to the base of this unnamed high ridge reaching a small place of Nema-Gchukpa Kharka. A lovely high spot for an overnight camp with grandeur views of snow peaks.

From Nema-Gchukpa Kharka, adventure heads towards a Chhendang which is quite lower from this campsite. The morning after breakfast, the walk leads further north at first with a slow short climb to a high ridge. Reaching on top of Chidakpu Kharka at 4,513 m, after a steep climb. Rewards with spectacular scenery of Langtang and Jugal Himal range, and then a long descent to Chhendang for overnight camp. After downhill, needs to cross a fast-flowing cold stream, if the temporary log bridge does not exist. Depending upon the grazing seasons, sometimes the cattle herders make a simple small bridge for animals; to graze on the other side.

Today is a fairly long walk, where trekkers need to be careful on some sections across a narrow path. Especially on the ledge of a high rocky cliff with some danger of rock fall, the path leads to a slow climb. As the walk progresses reach a small grassy area at Tongsyup Gufa, a place with an overhanging cave. In the early days monks and high Buddhist priests used this cave as a good shelter for meditation. From here on slow downhill to cross a stream, then reaching our overnight camp at Ne Pemasal.

Morning is another moderate walk as the trail climbs gradually adding more heights to the adventure. Leaving the fast-flowing stream for an uphill climb towards the small place of Bumbaserpu at above 4,200 m high. From here another hour or more climb to reach the overnight camp at Gyap Kharka. After an exciting day's walk of great variation with short down and ups on a narrow edge path.

Gyap Kharka, which is also a summer grazing pasture area for cattle. From here a short walk to Jugal Himal Base Camp our major destination of the adventure. They can be misleading, heed slowly as you encounter rocky moraines and glaciers to reach Jugal Himal Base Camp. Arriving on time for lunch and overnight halt, at the bottom of the towering giant peaks of Jugal Himal. An afternoon with time for rest to marvel at the spectacular scenery of the mountain range, and take a short hike around.

Enjoying the time of your life and feeling in high spirits on completing the first phase of the adventure. The return journey leads further east of Sindupalanchok district with various routes to reach Bhairab Kunda. The walk leads back to Ne Pemasal, but with a difference taking the east route via Ne Pemasal River. Just the opposite side from the path we walked the previous day towards Jugal Base Camp via Gyap Kharka. Eventually, the walk leads towards Ne Pemasal for the last overnight camp around the main areas of Jugal Himal.

From the camp at Ne Pemasal, our route diverts east towards Ne-Kharka for an overnight stop. Leaving the earlier path of the Panch Pokhari area, the trail follows eastward with slow ups and down. The country changes into rugged landscapes of the glaciated moraine of rocks and ice in some sections. Quite a long day walk on a completely new path, probably only a few trekkers and explorers might have used this route. But interesting walk far and off from the main popular areas following the hidden path to reach the overnight camp at Ne-Kharka. This area is often frequented by only a few cattle herders from nearby villages during the summer times.

On leaving the camp of Ne-Kharka heading towards another wild country at Jumle Pokhari, a small glacial pond. The walk follows, to short downhill to Takpadding then reaching Phu Kharka, which is east from the main route of Somdong. Our direction leads on a fresh new path around the areas of smaller glacial ponds of Jumle Pokhari. Located not far from Loom Pokhari and Bhairab Kunda our next destination after staying in Jumle Pokhari. Enjoy the views along the walks to Jumle Pokhari, within the remote and isolated region of Jugal Himal. After a pleasant and wonderful walk reaching a small pond of Jumle Pokhari for overnight camp.

After a pleasant overnight in Jumle Pokhari means a twin pond, due to its adjoining Loom Pokhari. The walk follows a secluded path towards Kappu Danda a high hill and ridges. Our approach to Bhairab Kunda is much different from other popular trails, coming from the south direction. As our walk leads from the northwest to reach the holy site of Bhairab Kunda. A stunning-looking holy lake at 4,125 m, one of the major pilgrimage destinations for Hindu followers. Like Panch Pokhari, Bhairab Kunda, where religious events are held once a year in the month of July / August. As per the Hindu Lunar calendar, pilgrims come to pay homage to the temple dedicated to Lord Bhairab. Which is another destructive form of Lord Shiva) as well as taking a bath in the holy lake. Enjoy the beautiful seating of Bhairab Kunda from the campsite, overlooking grand views of Jugal Himal peaks.

From Bhairab Kunda and its beautiful scenic location, the walk leads down south with a few short ups and more downhill. As the trail enters back into the dense forest of rhododendron, pines, oaks, and fir trees. The walk leads to an exciting place of Nautalle Kharka (means a temporary cattle herder shelter of 9 stories high). Probably built as a watch tower to guard their cattle from other wild animals. The walk then heads on winding down to Thulo Dhunga, a small farm settlement with a huge boulder. As the name means Thulo Dhunga, close to the farm areas where our overnight camp is set.

Slowly our adventurous walk comes to an end reaching Kyangsing village, a short- and last-day trek of the journey. The morning starts following the south route as the walk gets closer to warm farm areas in the village of Kyangsing. Mostly populated by the mountain tribes of Tamang and some Sherpa interwoven into Buddhism religion. Kyangsing is a nice farm village, from here take a four-wheel drive of more than 6 hours overland journey to Kathmandu. Although a long drive but interesting and exciting, the road follows rough dirt tracks. After hours on bumpy hill dirt tracks then joins on the main good road all the way to Kathmandu. On reaching the city limit and back to your respective hotels on time for the last dinner in Kathmandu and Nepal. After a great mesmerizing and wonderful experience on Ultimate Jugal Himal Adventure.

Today enjoy the free leisure day in Kathmandu for individual activities and for shopping sprees. Trekkers with early flights for respective countries, or other ports of call can depart from the hotel for international flight homeward bound.

We always try to be flexible in designing the trip itinerary for our client’s needs. However, if you are not convinced with our suggested itinerary then of course you are always welcome to customize or change the trip itinerary.

A holiday should never be about making it to the final point quickly. Along your trek, we can add days at your request with additional costs to cover guides, porters, accommodation, and food.

An average physical fitness should be maintained before booking a trek. Any sort of illness or recent medical problems should be mentioned while booking a trip. Most of our itineraries are prepared to give you maximum time to acclimatize and pace-setting on the treks would be done according to your convenience. If you are taking regular medication then tell us before the trip starts which would be better for us to give you the physical feedback.

Our main concern is your safety. We never compromised on your safety during the Trekking and all our guides are properly trained and well equipped to take care of our client's safety in even the remote areas as well.

There would be always back support in case of an emergency like severe high-altitude sickness or accident (which is least expected), you will be sent to the nearest hospital if possible otherwise rescued by a helicopter and sent to the hospital as soon as possible. Since you are entirely liable for all the expenses incurred for the use of such emergency services, please make sure that your travel insurance covers both- medical and emergency evacuation costs.

It is not a problem at all because in a mountain most of the tea houses/lodges serve vegetarian food as well and our guide will take care of the time cooking and on a camping trek, our cook and staff will care all about the food section.

We use standard quality (Camping Gear) like Clients' tents (3 men tents for couples and two men tents for single), dining tents, Shower tents, Toilet tents, staff tend thick mattresses, etc.  Also, we care for our staff and provide them with proper equipment for the camping trek. You will also be requested to have the proper gear for your personal use which will be suggested while confirming the trip.

Lately, most of the teahouses have electricity supply even with solar panels. So, charging your gadgets is not a problem at all. But charging your battery you should have to pay an additional fee (US$ 1 to 3 approx. per hour.), to get your gadgets to be charged.

Now a day’s most of the major village has a cell phone network connection. However, in a remote area where cell phones do not work, and even if there is no other communication access then we send satellite phones along with our guide so you can always be in touch with your family.

Yes, either you can store the same hotel as you stayed or we can store your goods with us safely in our office free of cost.

The luggage must not exceed up to 20 kilos. A trekking helper (porter) carries baggage of less than 15 kilos. This bag can be received at the end of each day’s trek and you should carry the rest of the weight as a day bag with all your money and valuables inside it.

This is a difficult thing to gauge. We have seen everything from USD 25 to USD 900 per person for guides and porters. Tipping is not required, but a small gesture of thanks to your guides and local porters. The Level of the tip should reflect the level of satisfaction from and personal involvement with your guide. However, we recommend you spend a minimum of 10% of your total trip cost for tipping the entire local staff.

The government of Nepal made an exciting decision to open up mountain climbing within the Himalayan range of the Jugal area of Sindhupalchok. This range has been described as the virgin Himalayas.

This area is full of unclimbed peaks, holy lakes, stunning scenery, traditional villages all within a combination of classic Himalayan valleys, mountains, rivers and forests.

Any expedition will involve starting from Jugal Base Camp (4700m). It will take 8 days from Kathmandu arrive to Base Camp which allows for sensible acclimatisation and involves negotiating a via ferratta. After this, the schedule will depend on which mountain and route choice. Each expedition will have full support of porters, cooks, sirdar and where requested, experienced mountain guides.

Base camp. Yang Kharka 4,700m is a very beautiful and safe place between Phurbuchyachu and Jugal glaciers. This is the gateway to the following mountains which are now available to climb:

Trip Overview

The Jugal Himal Base Camp Trek is a stunning remote trekking location in Nepal's eastern region. This trek brings you to a sacred pilgrimage destination through some gorgeous rural communities in the Himalayan environment. The name "Panch Pokhari" means "five lakes" (Panch means "five" and Pokhari means "lakes"). It receives its name from the region's five glacial lakes. These lakes are nestled among lush green hills in a beautiful setting. They play a vital role in preserving the region's local biodiversity.

Panch Pokhari is a very important holy site. In this temple, followers of the two divergent faiths of Buddhism and Hinduism pay their devotion to their gods. On the auspicious day of Janai Purnima in August, a large number of worshippers flock to this temple. This trek will provide you with a breathtaking view of the high central and eastern Himalayas. You'll learn about historical customs and cultures. At the base of Jugal Himal, you will have a fantastic adventure and an unforgettable experience.

Nepal and Tibet are separated by the Jugal Himal Mountain Range. Dorje Lokpa and Jugal Himal, both towering over 20,000 feet, are the prominent peaks in this mountain range. The trail ascends gently through the Indrawati Valley to the Panch Pokhari (Five Holy Lakes) and then descends via the secluded Balephi Valley. At the Panch Pokhari, we reach a maximum altitude of 14,000 feet. We will meet villagers from the Tamang caste, among others, on the Jugal Himal Trek, which is an old trade route between Nepal and Tibet. This excursion will provide us an insight into the ancient and primitive culture of this distant part of Nepal, where we may feel as if we have stepped back in time hundreds of years.

The Langtang, Gauri Shankar, and Rolwaling Himalayan ranges are all visible from the Jugal Himal trek. After a six-hour drive from Kathmandu, we will arrive in Chautara. Trip Overview

Introduction to jugal himal trek.

The Jugal Himal Trek is isolated and located north of Kathmandu. The major mountains of the Langtang region are Jugal Himal and Dorje Lakpa, which are at an altitude above 6,000 meters. Although the trek is very up and down, the village is culturally interesting in how Nepalese live their lives in the countryside.

The villages in this Langtang region have the main Tamang tribe settlements. Their culture, traditions, and daily lives are different from those of any other tribe. This journey gives us a glimpse of the old and primitive culture of this remote region of Nepal, where we may feel like we are hundreds of years behind.

On the way to this area, you will find some exotic flora and fauna while traveling through the rich Rhododendron forests, as well as some small Buddhist monasteries in the villages. The Jugal  Himal Trek brings you closer to the three ethnic groups of Nepal—Tamang, Sherpa, and Halmo—and allows you to learn about their traditions. During this trek, we can enjoy the real taste of Bhotang’s potatoes, Helambu apples, fresh yak cheeses, and butter.

Start Your Trek in the Langtang Region

After 4 hours of driving, you reach Chautara, from where your journey begins. The trail gradually crosses the Indrawati Valley to the Holy Panch Pokhari (Five Lakes) and then goes to the remote Balephi Valley. These five glacier lakes are located in a delightful place surrounded by picturesque, lush green hills.

Although Jugal Himal is a beautiful destination for trekking, only a few camping trekkers visit this area. This trip is more expensive than other normal trips due to the lack of food and accommodation facilities. The Jugal  Himal Trek is perfect for trekkers who do not like to meet many other travelers or spend time in a crowded place.

The best seasons for the Jugal Himal Trek are spring and autumn. You can also complete the trip in the winter and summer. But you have to have the proper gear to deal with these seasons. This is a moderate-level trek. You must keep yourself physically fit to complete the trek. The maximum height of the trek is 3,800 meters. So you should have the proper equipment and be careful about altitude risks.

Frequently asked questions about this trip

How difficult is the trek.

The difficulty depends on where and how long you want to trek. The short trek is easy while the long trek requires some physical fitness.

What is altitude sickness?

Altitude sickness is normally known as acute mountain sickness. This can happen when people rapidly climb up to an altitude of more than 3000 meters. We ensure minimal risk by adding rest to our trekking itineraries. Most people will feel some effects of altitude, some shortness of breath and possibly light headache, this is normal enough. Acute mountain sickness patients are quite different and usually have a serious headache, sickness, and lose awareness. In almost all possible cases there are sufficient warning signs to take action properly. Descending to a lower altitude is usually enough to prevent any further problems.

What type of accommodation is available during the trekking?

There are mainly tea houses and lodges available for trekking and they are usually made using local materials and are very comfortable. These accommodations are often family-run and usually provide single and double rooms. The dining room is on the ground floor and is often on fire. All food will be cooked in order in the family kitchen. Toilet facilities are sometimes separate and sometimes outside. Most lodges provide mattresses and blankets. It's a good idea to always have a sleeping bag, which can be useful, and perhaps an inflatable pillow.

How long do we walk every day on trekking?

Trekking programs are classified into three different categories: soft, moderate and hard. Soft treks are only about 7 days to 10 days in duration. They generally do not go above 4000 meters; you can expect to walk about 4-5 hours each day. Moderate treks are challenging enough and long treks that go to the high hill country. Physically exhausting, this involves trekking along the cliffs of the mountains for about 6-8 hours. Harder treks are longer treks that go farther away from the general abode of trekkers and tourists. These physically challenging treks involve walking for 7- 9 hours each day.

How much weight do I need to carry on the trek?

You carry some of your personal belongings, such as warm clothing, water, snacks, sun block, cameras and more. Generally, these items will be lightweight, from 5 to 10kg (10 to 20 pounds). Our porters are available for other heavy goods and for your information one porter would be sharing by two people. The maximum weight carried by one porter is total 20 kg. this means 10 kg. per person is allowed for the trek. In case if you wish to carry more than this weight then you need to hire additional porters.

What is the best time for trekking in Nepal?

October and November are considered as the best times for trekking in Nepal due to dry season. December and January are also considered good times for trekking but it is extremely cold at high altitudes.

North-east of Kathmandu, between Langtang and the Tibetan Border, the Jugal Himal is an accessible and yet surprisingly overlooked group of mountains. Accessed by road through Melamchi, most trekkers and Hindu pilgrims get no further than the group of five picturesque and holy lakes at Panch Pokhari (4055m) from where the principal Jugal peaks, Dorje Lakpa (6966m), Madiya (6257m), Jugal Yangri (6535m) and Phurbi Chhyachu (6637m), can be glimpsed from afar. Leaving the lakes behind, rarely travelled trails take us through the ‘Shangri-La’ valley of Ne-Pemachhal and onwards to the base camp at Yang Kharkha (4700m) alongside the Jugal Glacier. Spending a day in this spectacular location gives us the chance to explore and to hike up to a high viewpoint for the best perspective on the encircling snow-clad giant peaks of Jugal. As yet unspoiled, the heart of this region offers cascading streams, mature forest, sacred caves, hidden shrines and soaring peaks. It has many of the elements that we like to include in one of our Pioneer trips.

Jugal Himal Base Camp has remained off the radar for adventure travellers, in part because the Jugal peaks were not opened for climbing by the Nepal Mountaineering Association until 2023. Trails into this core area are not well-established as a result. There is interest from local people to develop tourism in the region and some trails have been improved, including some quite incongruous sections of well-made steps. But, you will also need to be comfortable negotiating sections of poor trail, across unconsolidated landslide areas, riverside boulder hopping, steeply up and down and through forest in places.

jugal himal base camp trek

Your holiday starts at the hotel in Kathmandu. Transfers from Kathmandu Airport are provided. Depending on your arrival time, you may have the opportunity to explore the immediate vicinity of the hotel and get acclimatised to this bustling city. Alternatively, you may prefer to recover from your journey by relaxing at the group hotel. Your guide will take dinner with you and will provide an informal briefing about the days ahead.

Accommodation

After breakfast, we will set off on the scenic 4 to 5-hour drive to the hill village of Thulo Bhotang, gateway to the Jugal Himal. Initially, we follow a surfaced road for an hour and a half to the hilltop town of Dhulikel where the views extend northwards to the Langtang and Jugal peaks. Descending, we pass through a number of settlements, including Panchkhal, before turning off northwards to the bazaar town of Melamchi. We will have a lunch stop and then continue on a winding dirt road to Thulo Bhotang (2000m) which is home to people of several different ethnic groups including Sherpas and Tamangs. We will set up camp on the outskirts of the village.

To allow us to acclimatize adequately we need to take our time and walk short stages as we approach the holy lakes at Panch Pokhari. On this first day we follow a trail that leads across the pretty, terraced farmland of Chhimti Village an then up through a mixed forest of rhododendron and pine to a camping place on the open ridge of the Tuppi Danda at an elevation of a little over 2700 metres.

Today’s trek starts out amongst a picturesque forest of rhododendron and fir trees. We pass clearings where cattle gaze and a couple of trailside teahouses. We will stop for lunch at one of these basic lodges at the place called Chokergyang and then and continue on a well-made stone trail, marked in places by chortens and colourful prayer flags, to Nosyampati (3700m). Trails converge here from several directions and there is a scattering of simple homes and teahouses. We set up camp here for a 2-night stay.

Having gained 1000 metres yesterday we need to spend a second night at this elevation before going higher. Quiet and unspoiled, with far-reaching views across the surrounding Himalayan foothills, Nosyampati is a great place to spend a day. Getting up early to witness the sunrise is highly recommended. We will have the option to hike up to a nearby viewpoint to make the best of the views and can look out for eagles and bearded vultures as they soar along the ridge. The distant lights of Kathmandu can be made out as night falls.

No need for too early a breakfast today, as it’s just a short morning’s walk up to Panch Pokhari. Heading steeply away from Nosyampati, on sections of carefully constructed stone steps, we are soon above the trees and there are views northwards to the snow-peaks of the Jugal Himal. We pass a narrow, rocky cleft at Chhata Ghabha and beyond a high point at the Laurebina La (4074m) continue to the five lakes at Panch Pokhari. We will set up camp, have lunch and then hike up (30 minutes) to the viewpoint above the lakes. Festooned with prayer flags this is one of the best places from which to view the principal Jugal Himal peaks of Dorje Lakpa (6966m), Madiya (6257m) and Phurbi Chhyachu (6637m).

An exciting, recently established trail leads more or less directly to Chhendang at the junction of the Langtang and Ne-Pemachhal streams. We start out by ascending to the ‘ridge top’ viewpoint at 4229 metres and from here begin a long descent in a north-easterly direction, following a forested ridge and passing a number of clearings including the place known as Nema-Gchukpa Kharka (3578m). We will carry a packed lunch today as there is no reliable water source on this ridge. Finally down in the valley, we cross the Langtang Khola to reach Chhendang and its monastery which is in a state of disrepair following the April 2015 earthquake.

Steep-sided and well wooded, the beautiful valley of Ne-Pemachhal is the location of a pilgrimage and meditation site which celebrates the belief that the Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) visited the valley in the 8th century. Heading up into the valley, with some sections of narrow and exposed trail, we reach the rock overhang at Tongsyup Gufa, historically a place of meditation for Buddhist monks. Then, crossing a tributary stream, we complete a more level final kilometer of trekking to our camping place at Ne-Pemachhal.

Before continuing our approach to Jugal Himal Base Camp, we take the opportunity to visit a great viewpoint at the place known as Gyap Kharka (4400m) on the north side of the Ne-Pemachhal Valley. We hike up directly and steeply, in part on a new stepped trail, to the single shelter at Bumpasherpu (4200m) and then traverse the valley slopes to Gyap Kharka (4400m) where the trail ends. From here we can look across to the location of base camp and the ring of peaks that encircle the Jugal Glacier. Phurbi Chhyachu (6637m) is the dominating mountain to the east. We return to spend a second night at Ne-Pemachhal.

This morning we cross the Ne-Pemachhal River and trek easily through forest on the south side of the river. We can see the peaks of the Jugal Himal ahead, including Phurbi Chhyachu, as well as the steepening of the valley through which we must pass tomorrow. We set up our camp in a side-valley at Palmothang, have lunch and spend the afternoon at leisure.

Today’s short and at times steep and complicated stage takes us beneath the precipitous lower slopes of Phurbi Chhyachu before making its way up on a poor trail that involves some easy scrambling whilst following the east bank of the river up to Yang Kharka (4700m), the spectacular basecamp area for the Jugal peaks.

We have a day to explore this special place which is something of a ‘mountain sanctuary’, accessible with some difficult only from the south. The views of the encircling peaks are already pretty dramatic, but we’ll do some exploring to find the best glacier and mountain perspectives.  We spend a second night at Yang Kharka.

Walking out from Yang Kharka, we make a slow and careful descent of the steep riverside trail and continue more easily via Palmothang and through the atmospheric forest to Ne-Pemachhal where we stop for lunch. A long and pleasant afternoon walk then takes us down to Chhendang.

This final trekking stage takes us southwards above the Balephi Khola. The trail is little–used and indistinct in places with a couple of landslide areas and a couple of log bridges near Dippu, the highest permanent settlement in the valley. A road (to a hydro-electric site) is under construction and this trekking stage may change as a result. We overnight at Tembathang, a Sherpa Village with about 150 homes, as well as the usual stupas and mani walls. The inhabitants are keen to show off their Sherpa culture. The raising of livestock, including yaks, is the main occupation.

We have a short walk to the roadhead at Nesam Khola, where we meet our transport for the 6 to 7 hour drive back to Kathmandu. We will stop off for lunch at a roadside restaurant and reach the city in the late afternoon. After checking in at the group hotel, we have some to relax and freshen-up before heading out to one of the Thamel restaurants for a celebratory dinner.

Your holiday ends after breakfast. Transfers to Kathmandu Airport are provided. To extend your holiday in Nepal, why not pre-book a day's sightseeing tour in the Kathmandu Valley, or a multi-day excursion to the wildlife reserve at Chitwan. Contact our office for details.

It is not recommended to drink untreated water from the taps. If you are on a trekking or cycling holiday, water is supplied to fill up your individual bottles. This will be boiled, filtered or provided in large jerry cans or 5 litre bottles. Additionally you should take purification tablets or a filter bottle (such as a Water-To-Go bottle ) to treat your water when in towns or where water is not supplied. We do not encourage the purchasing of single use plastic bottles.

Our camping holidays in Nepal are accompanied by an experienced and well trained trek cook and his team of assistants. Breakfasts will include porridge or cereals and sometimes eggs, with tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Lunches are generally prepared on the trail and can include cooked or tinned vegetables, rice, chips, freshly made Tibetan bread, as well as tinned tuna, meats or cheese. On occasion this can be augmented by noodle soup. Dinners always start off with soup, followed by a locally inspired main course such as rice, dal and spicy vegetables, or a more international dish like pasta with a tomato sauce or pizza and chips. Dessert can be tinned fruit with custard or rice pudding or cake with custard. The emphasis is on providing a high-carbohydrate and largely vegetarian diet, which we have found to be easily digestible at high altitude. During this trek there will be very few opportunities to purchase snacks and drinks from simple shops and tea houses. All meals while on trek and also while staying at your Kathmandu hotel are included in the trip price.

We have 2 nights in Kathmandu at the new and very comfortable 4 star Aloft Hotel. Located in the heart of the city, this hotel offers a range of first-class facilities including fast and free WiFi and a spa and fitness centre. We have a single night at a lodge in Thulo Bhotang and 12 nights full-service camping. This is camping in style, where we provide spacious 2 person tents (foam mattresses are also provided), a dining tent complete with table and chairs where you will eat your meals and relax, a kitchen tent in which the cook crew produce your meals and one (or more usually two) toilet tents. Your local crew will set up the camp each evening and take it down again in the morning. You will be served with a cup of bed tea each morning and provided with a bowl of water with which to wash. Water for hand washing is also provided at each meal. On arrival into camp each afternoon hot drinks and snacks will be provided in the dining tent. All accommodation is arranged on a twin sharing basis. If you are travelling by yourself you will be paired up with another single client of the same sex. It is possible to hire a single tent while on trek for an additional cost. Please note single tent hire does not include single rooms in hotels. For the 2 nights in Kathmandu single room occupancy can be arranged at supplementary cost. Additional hotel nights in Kathmandu can also be pre-booked.

The group will be led by a professional and qualified Nepalese tour leader, assisted by an experienced team including Sherpa guides and porters.

Approximately £200 (or equivalent in US dollars, Euros etc.) changed into local currency, should be allowed for miscellaneous expenses including porter and trek crew tips, drinks etc. It is not necessary to obtain local currency prior to departure. Sterling, US Dollars and Euros are equally acceptable for exchange in Nepal. Please note: Scottish and Northern Ireland bank notes are not accepted in Nepal. We recommend that you carry your travel money in the form of cash, since you will exchange the majority of this on the day of your arrival in Kathmandu. If you prefer not to carry all of your spending money in cash, it is possible to withdraw money from ATMs in Kathmandu using your debit or credit card. During the trek there are few opportunities to purchase anything.

Tipping is the accepted way of saying thank you for good service. Normally the tips are given at the end of the trek and this is best done as a group. Your Nepali tour leader will advise the group on an appropriate level of tipping. Most groups will hand out the tips with a bit of ceremony (or sometimes a party) on the last evening, to mark the end of the holiday. As a guide, we recommend that each group member contributes around £80 (in rupees) to these tips. At the end of their trek many people also like to donate various items of equipment to the porters and trek staff who work so hard to make the trip a success. Boots, gloves, hats, scarves and even socks are always warmly received by the porters, whilst technical clothing and equipment such as head-torches and trekking poles is highly prized by the Sherpa team. Your tour leader will make arrangements for a fair distribution (possibly by raffle) amongst the trek crew. Please note that you will have the opportunity to tip your tour leader separately (and additionally) during dinner on the final evening of the holiday.

Your main item of luggage should be a sturdy kit bag, duffle bag or similar. This will be carried during the trek by porters or pack animals and must weigh no more than 15kg. If you are picking up a sleeping bag and down jacket from KE in Kathmandu, you need to factor in the weight of these items (around 3kg) and allow space in your bag for them. You should also take on your holiday a daypack of approximately 30 litres capacity. It is possible to leave items not required on trek at the hotel in Kathmandu. For your international flights, please check the baggage allowance with your airline.

For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in ‘Dates and Prices’ table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status and so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements.

The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required , and you should have at least 2 blank pages for each country that you visit.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Please ensure that you check for the latest advice before travel. For the most up to date information on entry requirements, please visit the UK Government website .

All nationalities require a visa. The visa process is partly automated and the fee is $30 for 15 days, $50 for 30 days, $125 for 90 days. The visa is FREE for children under 10 years. The visa allows multiple re-entry. Payment must be made in cash and USD, GBP or Euros are accepted.

Part of this on-arrival visa process involves filling in a ‘Tourist Visa Application Form’ and you can simplify the procedure at Kathmandu Airport by filling this form in online ( within 15 days of travelling ) at this link . This generates a receipt which you present (hard copy or saved on your phone) on arrival. This should allow you to go straight to the cashier to pay for your visa and has the potential to save you time in the visa queue.

Whilst these are not now needed for the visa process, we recommend that you travel with at least 2 spare passport photographs.

The unit of currency in Nepal is the Nepalese Rupee.

It makes a lot of sense to spend some time before coming on a trekking or climbing trip getting some additional exercise. The fitter you are, after all, the more enjoyable you will find the experience. For this trip you need to be aerobically fit and also comfortable with walking for around 5 to 6 hours each day We would suggest that you adopt a weekly exercise regime. Regular walking in hill country is the best preparation for a trip of this nature, but running, cycling and swimming are also good for developing better stamina. Whatever your chosen method of training, before departure, we suggest that you try to fit in a number of long walks in hilly country.

October-December and March-May are the best times to visit Nepal. These months either side of the monsoon are neither too hot nor too cold, offering the best conditions for trekking. At either of these periods you will encounter a wide range of daytime temperatures during your trip, from approximately 25ºC in Kathmandu to around 10 to 15ºC at 3000 metres and around 5 to 8ºC at 4000 metres. The ‘real feel’ temperature in the middle of the day will be much warmer than this in the sun. At night in the rarefied air the temperatures plummet. You can expect to experience overnight temperatures at 3000 metres of around freezing and at 4000 metres of minus 7 or 8ºC.  Extended periods of rain or snow are very unlikely outside of the monsoon period but short lived storms can and do occur.

As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's ‘Travel Aware ’ campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that prior to travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCDO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: www.travel.state.gov for essential travel advice and tips.

KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe.  Should the FCDO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation.  We receive regular updates direct from the FCDO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground.  If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office.

Your Guide to Trekking and Hiking in Nepal

Jugal Himal Trek

Jugal Himal

Jugal Himal Trek takes you to the northeast part of Kathmandu valley, through the unfrequented region that sits on the lap of chains of the Himalayas like Dorje Lakpa (6966m), Madiya (6257m), and Phurbi Chhyachu (6637m). It is an off-the-beaten-path experience for 12 days. Very few and lucky trekkers embark on a journey to Jugal Himal every year.

Lying in close proximity to Kathmandu, Jugal Himal Trek is popular with enthusiastic trekkers from around the world. Ranging from 870m to 4050m, the trail envelops zone from tropical forests to high alpine lakes. The route of Jugal Himal trek weaves through the narrow path and forested ridges.

Follow the trail that bestows high passes, incredible mountains view, Tibetan monasteries, picturesque villages, deep forests, Panch Pokhari, and Bhairab Kunda lake. Panch Pokhari (meaning five ponds) is a group of 5 Hindu holy lakes, renowned for being the 9th highest altitude wetland in the world. It is perched at an elevation of about 4100m above sea level.

Bhairab Kunda, one of the major highlights of this trek, is situated in Sindhupalchok district and frequented by thousands of pilgrims every year in the Nepali month of Bhadra (August) during the full moon. At 4240m, Bhairab Kunda is a revered and preserved holy pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists.

The fact that the Jugal Himal area is less touristy makes it welcome very few camping trekkers every year. There are no food and accommodation facilities along the route. You will be camping with the team who will do all the tasks.

Marvel at the sight of Manaslu (8163m), Ganesh Himal (7405m), Langtang Lirung (7234m), Ghengu Liru (6571m) (Langtang II), Kimshun (6745m) Shalbachum (6918m), and surrounding peaks. The trail leads through many traditional Newari, Magar, and Tamang villages. The trek is not just scenically blessed but offers cultural diversity.

Jugal Himal Trek Route

The trek starts from the Chautra, district city of Sindhupalchok. On the first day, you will reach Syaule at 1550m. The trek continues through beautiful villages to Kamikharka Danda. Walkthrough beautiful oak and rhododendron forests that open up to lofty mountains.

On 4th day, you will trek from Chyocho Danda to Hile Bhanjyang. For 4-5 hours, you will trek along the ridge and descend into the forests until you reach Hile Bhanjyang.

Continue steep climb to a hillock and traverse flat stone trail to Nasem Pati. Your next destination will be Dukhang at 2100m, before stopping at Panch Pokhari. Trek for a few hours through the well-marked trail to Panch Pokhari. The 7th day of this trip is allocated for acclimatization day. On this day, you will detour around Panch Pokhari.

The following day, you will descend to Nasem Pati. Further, you will trek to Dukhang and rest. Continue the beautiful trail to Dhap and Melamchi Bazaar. Enjoy the sheer pleasure of trekking through the easy trail.

On the last day, you will drive back to Kathmandu from Melamchi Bazaar. There are few ups and downs through the lush forest before catching a ride to Kathmandu.

Jugal Himal Trek Difficulty

Jugal Himal Trek is graded an easy to moderate trek, best for those who wish to revel trekking along the less-crowded trail. First-time trekkers can also trek to Jugal Himal. But prior trekking experience and proper preparation is a plus point.

The best time to visit the Jugal Himal area is during Spring and Autumn. The highest elevation of this trek is 4050m at Panch Pokhari.

An adventure to Jugal Himal demands at least 4-5 hours of trekking. And on a challenging day, you should walk for 6-7 hours. Dhorpatan Trek- 12 Days, and Gangapurna Base Camp Trekking – 9 Days are two other options we highly recommend to you.

  • Essential Info

The Jugal Himal Trek is thrilling. It is located to the northeast of Kathmandu. It’s in the Rolwaling area.  It is an ancient trade route that connects Nepal and Tibet. The views of Dorjee Lhakpa, Madiya, and Phurbi Chhyachu are breathtaking. It is a remote and untouched trek. Because it is not crowded, this trek is ideal for those who want to walk alone in peace. It is culturally and biologically diverse.

The trek’s main highlights are Panch Pokhari and Bhirab Kunda. Hindus visit Panch Pokhari on the occasion of Jani Purnima, which falls in August. There are five sacred ponds at the foot of Jugal Himal. The lakes are thought to be the source of the Indravati River. The geological terrains, flora and fauna, and mountain views are breathtaking. The route passes through Sherpa and Tamang villages.

The trek begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Chautara. The journey will take between 5 and 6 hours. It marks the beginning of the trek. Before reaching Panch Pokhari, we will pass through several villages including Syaule, Kami Kharka, Chyochyo Danda, Hile Bhanjyang, and Nosyampati. This trek will expose you to Himalayan culture and lifestyle. The trail travels through beautiful scenery, waterfalls, alpine forests, temples, and more. Bakhang Gompa is the trek’s endpoint.
