Who is Jatayu?

jatayu-vadham-painting-Raja-Ravi-Varma

Jatayu, in the Hindu epic Ramayana, is the younger brother of Aruna and a demi-god. He has the form of a vulture and is the dearest friend of Lord Rama’s father, Dhasharatha. According to Ramayana, Jatayu had tried to save Goddess Sita when he saw Ravana abducting her to Lanka. The personification of chivalry and valor, Jatayu risked his life to rescue Sita from the evil clutches of King Ravana.

After Ravana clipped his wing, Jatayu lay down waiting for Lord Rama so he could tell him that Ravana had gone south. With the pain of Jatayu dying to save Sita, Lord Rama blessed the bird and performed his last rites. From that day on, Jatayu has been the epitome of bravery and stands as a symbol for the empowerment and protection of women.

The sculpture of this mythical bird at Jatayu Earth Centre sits at the exact spot where Jatayu took his last breath.

The main attractions of Jatayu Park are spread over four hills, each offering different activities and attractions. Each hill has its own significance. Electricity is domestically harnessed from solar power panels for the smooth functioning of the Jatayu Earth Center.

What does Jatayu Earth Center signify?

According to the sculptor, Rajiv Anchal, the Jatayu rock symbolizes women’s empowerment. In the present day, women face numerous troubles and the crimes against them are rising. This epic structure which highlights the bravery of Jatayu to save Goddess Sita, cries out to people about the importance that should be given to women and their safety. Following Jatayu’s example, men must stand for the justice of women. Uplifting women and ensuring they live in a safe and secure environment is vital. Jatayu Earth Center is a tribute to Womanhood.

Jatayu Rock, Pond and Rama Temple

Jatāyu, according to the Rāmāyana, was a bird who was the son of Garuda (Vishnu’s mythical bird), and king of the vultures. He is also attributed to being the son of Aruna. He was an ally of Rāma and fought Rāvana furiously to prevent him from abducting Sītā, but was overpowered and left mortally wounded.

In the great epic Ramayana, Jatayu is characterized as a noble bird of divine origin. One day he happened to hear the plaintive cry of a lady. It was Sita crying for help while she was being abducted to Lanka by the demon king Ravana. Jatayu rushed to rescue her, stopped Ravana’s chariot named Pushpaka Vimana, and engaged in a battle with him. Eventually, Ravana cut off the Jatayu’s left wing with his powerful sword Chandrahasa, and went away with Sita. It is said that the injured Jatayu and his lost wing landed on top of a rock.

In time, the rock got the name Jatayupara. This is where the monumental statue of Jatayu is now built in Kollam, Kerala. The pond near the rock is said to have formed by the stroke of Jatayu’s beak. It has water throughout the year and never goes dry.

Legend also says that Lord Rama came to Jatayupara and gave moksha or deliverance to the wounded and dying Jatayu. Jatayu narrated the entire story to Rama, delivering him vital information about his wife Sita. Here, there is a mark of footprint said to be that of Lord Rama. A temple dedicated to Lord Rama sits in an adjacent compound.

The sculpture, adventure center, and the Siddha Healing Center sit over 65 acres of land and form the Jatayu Earth Centre.

The Jatayu Earth Center offers an assortment of rock-based adventure activities for thrill-seekers. Plan your trip to Kerala with us and enjoy your visit to Jatayu Park.

Jatayu was a vulture-like bird who was the son of Aruna, the charioteer of the sun god Surya. Jatayu was a loyal friend and devotee of Lord Rama, and he played a crucial role in his life.

According to the Ramayana, when Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana were living in exile in the forest, the demon king Ravana kidnapped Sita and flew away in his flying chariot. Jatayu saw this and tried to stop Ravana by fighting him in the air. Jatayu fought valiantly but was severely wounded by Ravana’s sword. He fell to the ground and waited for Rama to come. When Rama arrived, Jatayu told him about Sita’s abduction and Ravana’s direction. Rama was touched by Jatayu’s sacrifice and performed his last rites with respect and gratitude.

All About Jatayu Earth's Centre In Kollam, Kerala

Jatayu Earth's Centre. Credit Wikimedia Commons

Jatayu Earth's Centre has been a hidden gem among Kerala's many sightseeing spots. An eco-tourism initiative, this site perfectly blends mythology and artistry, offering an enriching ride to tourists. The inspiration behind this magnificent sculpture originates from the legend of Jatayu. This King of Vultures from the epic Ramayana has been recreated into an adventure hotspot.

Inaugurated in 2018, the tourist attraction is the world's largest bird sculpture, according to its website. Designed by Rajiv Anchal, the 70-feet tall sculpture is carved out on the Chadayamangalam hilltop in Kollam, where the battered bird is believed to have fallen after failing to thwart Ravana's abduction of Goddess Sita.

To immortalise Jatayu's sacrifice, the sculpture has been designed precisely how Ravana left it&mdashinjured and wingless. The massive structure shows the bird facing upside with clenched claws and pain in its eyes, reflecting the agony it went through after the face-off. Moreover, the brilliant piece of art is also dedicated to women's safety in line, commemorating Jatayu's efforts to protect Goddess Sita from the Ravana.

If you scroll through the website, the poetic narration of the bird's first encounter with Lord Ram will compel you to book your slot for the range of activities offered here.

A replica of  King Janak's Palace , Goddess Sita's father, has also been carved at the site. The palace's designs highlight the architecture of 'Thretha Yug,' as per the website.

The  6D theatre &nbspis a visual retreat for anyone and everyone wanting to revisit the legend of the fallen warrior. With high-resolution pictures, the recreation of the Jatayu-Ravana battle experience will leave visitors in awe.

A  cable ride &nbspamidst the greens is worth every penny to reach the hilltop. Enjoy your journey as you make your way up to the sculpture in the Swiss-made cable cars. The ride will take you both up and down the hilltop where the statue lies.

The Journey to Jatayu Earth’s Center

The development of Jatayu Earth’s Center is a testament to dedication and vision. It took years of hard work and collaboration to transform a barren piece of land into an ambitious eco-tourism project. Here’s a brief overview of the key milestones in the center’s journey:

1999 – The First Step

Securing clearance for an eco-tourism project of this scale was a challenge due to concerns about the surrounding ecosystem. In 1999, the clearance was granted when respected IAS officer Mr. Devendra Kumar released the rights and orders for the 65 acres of Government-owned land to build the first BOT Tourism project in Kerala.

2004 – Land Handed Over to the Department of Tourism

In 2004, the Kerala Government passed an order to transfer the 65 acres of land from the Revenue Department to the Tourism Department. The efforts of the then MLA for Chadayamangalam, Mr. Prayar Gopalakrishnan, played a significant role in advancing the project.

2005 – The Inauguration

An important milestone in the center’s history was reached when the then Kerala Minister for Tourism, Mr. K. C. Venugopal, officially inaugurated the project. Mr. Chengara Surendran MP and Mr. Prayar Gopalakrishnan MLA were present during the ceremony, marking the official commencement of this ambitious venture.

2006 – Finding the Sculptor

The process of selecting the sculptor for this grand project was a pivotal moment in the center’s journey. Mr. Rajiv Anchal, who had nurtured the idea of a Jatayu sculpture at Chadayamangalam for decades, was chosen by an expert committee after carefully evaluating proposals from various sculptors. This marked the beginning of the planning and creation of the remarkable sculpture that now stands as the center’s main attraction.

2009 – First Phase Work Inaugurated

The inauguration of the first phase of works, which included the sustainable and eco-friendly tourism land, was conducted by Mr. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, the then Minister for Tourism in Kerala. This momentous occasion was graced by the presence of the then Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Mullakkara Ratnakaran, and Mr. Chengara Surendran MP, along with various dignitaries.

2010 – Investor Pitch

A project of the scale and scope of Jatayu Earth’s Center required significant capital to come to fruition. To attract the necessary investments, the Eco-Tourism Department submitted a proposal to the Government of Kerala to call for investors who could support the project financially. The proposal was accepted, and investments began pouring in from various quarters, providing the team with the much-needed support and confidence to proceed.

2011 – Proposal by Rajiv Anchal

Mr. Rajiv Anchal, the Chairman and Managing Director of Guruchandrika Builders and Property Private Limited, submitted a detailed proposal for the completion of the project. This comprehensive plan was accepted by the Government, setting the stage for further development.

2013 – Land Leased for 30 Years Under BOT Scheme

The Government of Kerala sealed the project’s fate by fixing a lease period of 30 years under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) scheme. The operations of the project were handed over to Guruchandrika Builders and Property Private Limited. The surrounding land and all the amenities were also transferred the same year, bringing the dream of Jatayu Earth’s Center one step closer to reality.

Jatayumangalam & Jatayu Earth’s Center

Chandayamangalam, or Jatayumangalam, is famous for its world’s largest bird sculpture, Jatayu Earth’s Center. Researchers have traced the origins of the town to the 8th to 9th century AD and attribute it to the Ay Kingdom. Jatayu, the mythical bird from the epic Ramayana, is the subject of the largest bird sculpture in the world and a rock theme park for adventure enthusiasts. One can enjoy a bird’s eye view of God’s Own Country from the ropeway or in a helicopter ride.

Within a natural terrain, the Jatayu Adventure Center offers the largest adventure park in the world. Among the many activities available here are paintball, valley crossing, bouldering, zip lining, trekking, archery, rappelling, jumaring and wall climbing. Taking advantage of the hillside’s natural rock formations, climbing activities are available. For the complete, wholesome experience, make sure to explore the multi cuisines at the food court with a panoramic view as well as the Siddha Cave Healing Center in addition to experiencing the adventerous activities over here.

A unique blend of adventure, leisure, leisure, science, and technology, Jatayu Earth Center, also known as Jatayu Nature Park, is a unique combination of artistry, mythology, technology, culture, and wellness. The theatre magic that brings to life the story of Jatayu and the virtual reality museum enhance the destination’s magic. It is also home to a huge population of wild monkeys belonging to the bonnet macaque species.

Located at a height of 1000 feet above sea level, Chadayamangalam consists of the temple Kodandarama at the summit of Jadayu para (also known as Mellupara). It also has several other small mountains such as Vayanam Mala, Pavoor Mala, Alathara Mala, Elambrakodu Mala, Arkannur Madappara Mala and Thevannur Mala that add to its natural beauty.

This sculpture measures 200 feet (61 m) in length, 150 feet (46 m) in width, and 70 feet (21 m) in height. It occupies 1,400 square feet (1,400 m2) of floor space and was sculpted by Rajiv Anchal. As Kerala’s first BOT-specific public–private partnership tourism project, this rock-themed nature park was opened to visitors on 17 August 2018.

The Ramayana (an epic of Hindu mythology) describes a demi-god named Jatayu in the form of a vulture. As per the Ramayana, Jatayu tried to rescue Lord Sita from Ravana, but after being wounded by Ravana, he fell here and died. On the Jatayu rock, Rama stood on one leg to grant salvation to Jatayu, causing his foot print to emerge, and it still exists today. Devotees visit the temple throughout the year to revere the site of footprints on the rocky mountain and the source of water that sprinkles out through out the year. There is a story in the temple grounds which mentions that “Kokkarani” (water tank) was created by Jadayu rubbing the rock with his beak.

Jatayu sculpture: a perfect blend of myth, man’s ingenuity and nature

 alt=

The gigantic bird sculpture on Jatayupara in Kollam district gives life to an epic. It is the largest bird sculpture in the world and from a distance it seems that the carved mammoth figure is touching the sky. The sculpture is a visual feast for people travelling to Thiruvananthapuram on the MC Road. The statue, situated in Chadayamangalam, is the brainchild of popular film director and sculptor Rajiv Anchal.

Jatayu Earth’s Centre

While travelling on the MC Road, one could see the huge bird sculpture with its clipped wings just before reaching Chadayamangalam and the gateway to Jatayupara is also from the MC Road. The Jatayu Earth’s Center, also known as Jatayu Nature Park, is an eco-garden worth a visit. The facility has ample parking space and there are pathway and cable car service to take visitors to the top of the peak. Those who are into trekking can walk through the pathway, which is amidst the forest, to the hill top and passes will be issued to visitors from 9.30am to 5.30pm. The cable car has four cabins with each cabin having a carrying capacity of eight persons. People travelling in cable cars can get an aerial view of the lush greenery of the region.

The bird’s eye view of the valley from atop the peak is breathtaking, to say the least. Outside food packets, water bottles and big bags are not allowed to the top of the hill. Jatayupara has stalls that sell snacks and cafes. Toilet facilities are also available.

The Jatayu statue

It took close to 15 years to put in place the statue complex atop the hill. Before going near the sculpture, just enjoy the aesthetics of this huge work of art from a distance. The story of Jatayu featured in the epic Ramayana is etched on the rock in Malayalam, English and Hindi languages. Decorated Malayalam poet ONV Kurup’s touching verses on Jatayu is also inscribed on the rock. Legend has it that the Jatayu bird fell on the rock after its wings were clipped by Ravana as the divine bird tried to save Sita from the clutches of Ravana. Later, Rama granted ‘moksha’ to Jatayu as the bird fought valiantly to rescue Sita. And that’s how this rock got its name Jatayupara (para means rock).

Presently, visitors are not allowed inside the Jatayu complex as work is still progressing inside the structure. On the right side of the main entrance it is written that the sculpture is dedicated to safety of women and honesty. It is also mentioned that the statue is dedicated to women as Jatayu, though a bird, stood for the safety of women.

Though it is pretty hot during daytime, the strong breeze will provide a relief from the searing heat. The expansive gallery is a striking feature of the Jatayu complex and other points of interest include Ram temple, Rama ‘paadam’ and ‘Kokkarani’ (holy water reservoir).

What is ‘Kokkarani’

‘Kokkarani’ is situated behind the Jatayu statue. It is a holy water reservoir but visitors can’t go near it as it is barricaded. It is worth noting that the water body won’t dry up even in the peak of summer. The myth behind this reservoir is also related to Jatayu. According to legend, the injured bird, which was thirsty, stroked its beak against the rock and water spouted. It is said that the shape of the holy reservoir is like a spot where a bird’s beak had been rubbed and that’s how it got its name ‘Kokkarani’. Another story that is doing the rounds for long is that Kokkarani’s water is red as the blood of Jatayu got spilled into the pond.

Jatayu Kodandarama Temple

The Ram temple was constructed three to four years ago and its main deity is Lord Rama who gave ‘moksha’ to Jatayu. Other idols in the temple include that of Sita, Lakshmana, Ganapati, Dakshinamoorthy, Sooryadevan, Jatayu and Hanuman. The Jatayu Ram Temple, which was re-consecrated by Swami Satyananda Saraswati, is currently under Jatayupara Kodandarama Temple Trust. Daily poojas are conducted at the temple and the main offering is ‘vanarayoottu’ (feeding of monkeys). Rice is served to hundreds of monkeys seen in the vicinity of the temple every evening.

Another legend has it that the rock bears the footprints of Rama, who came here in search of Sita, and the holy footprints are preserved in a glass box. A ‘kedavilaku’ (an undying lamp) could also found near the Rama ‘paadam’. The undying lamp was first lit by Aswathi Thirunal Gowri Lakshmi Bayi, a member of the Travancore royal family. Devotees visiting the temple often recite the ‘Jatayu stuti’ mentioned in Adhyathma Ramayanam.

There is a pathway in the forest that leads to the Ram Temple and pilgrims and others take this route to reach the holy place. Work has also started to build steps to the temple. People coming to Jatayupara also visit the Ram temple.

jatayu tourism kerala

The Jatayu sculpture, Ram temple, Rama ‘paadam’ and ‘Kokkarani’ are some of the beautiful vistas of Jatayupara. Hundreds of people flock to this beautiful spot where nature and man’s creation blend perfectly. The sights from atop the rock are not only a feast for the eyes but also give a soothing effect to the mind.

At the base of Jatayupara, children can have a gala time at Wonder World Reality, a game park. A ‘12D Rider’ is also present to regale the grownups. Undoubtedly, the Jatayu Earth’s Center provides great entertainment and amazing view for the visitors.

Jatayu Story

The massive Jatayu sculpture in the Jatayu Earth’s center is inspired by a valiant fighter bird Jatayu from the Hindu epic of Ramayana. In Ramayana, when Rama and Sita, the divine couple were in exile, Sita was abducted by Ravan, a demon and the antagonist of the story, when Rama was not around. The hapless Sita cried out aloud for help . This is when Jatayu, a divine vulture, who was Rama’s trustworthy friend came forward to help Sita. Jatayu fought Ravan with all his might but was rendered motionless after Ravan clipped off his wings, using his sword.

It is believed that Jatayu fell back on the Jatayu rock in the aforementioned Jatayu Earth’s Centre, now the world’s largest bird sculpture . Sita, the manifestation of Goddess Lakshmi blessed Jatayu for sacrificing himself to help her. Jatayu later succumbed to his injuries after meeting Rama and tell him the whereabouts of Sita. It is the said Lord Rama himself performed his late rites on this rock.

The legend is proof that Jatayu symbolizes the protector of women. Rajiv Anchal, devoted this project to this brave warrior bird, keeping this profound principle in mind. The statue is dedicated to women’s safety and honor.

Facts about jatayu

Ten facts about Jatayu, the mythological hero who inspired the sculpture:

  • Jatayu is the younger son of Aruna , who is the charioteer of the sun-god Surya, and the brother of the mighty Garuda.
  • Like Garuda, Jatayu could assume human form when he wanted to.
  • Jatayu’s elder brother Sampati lost his wings as a child while protecting J atayu who flew so high on a light-hearted contest that he was about to swear by the sun’s flames. Sampati later proved pivotal in guiding the monkey armies and Hanuman, in locating Lanka, where Sita was hidden.
  • Sampati who was about to devour the monkeys on a mission to find Sita had a change of mind on the mention of Jatayu, his brother, who helped Rama.
  • Jatayu was a friend of Dasaratha , the father of Lord Rama and former-king of Ayodhya.
  • Jatayu had once protected Dasaratha during a war between the demi-gods and the demons, where Dasaratha sided the demi-gods. This was way before Rama was born.
  • Jatayu met Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana, Rama’s younger brother during the beginning of the exile. Thereafter, he remained nearby to protect the trio from any danger.
  • Jatayu was the first to assist Lord Rama in his quest for Sita , just before breathing his last.
  • Jatayu managed to cause significant damage to the Pushpaka Vimana , Ravan’s divine flying chariot while fighting the demon to save Sita.
  • Ravan used Chandrahaasa , a godly sword gifted to him by Lord Shiva to clip off Jatayu’s wings.

6 Things You Should Know About Kerala’s Latest Tourist Attraction – Jatayu Nature Park

T he first phase of Jatayu Nature Park, a much awaited tourism destination in Kerala, is all set to open in January 2016. The park is named after the mythical bird from Ramayana — Jatayu, who tried to rescue Sita from Ravana. The nature park project has been started with the aim of promoting mythology, adventure and wellness tourism. Kerala cemeteries gold mines of untapped tourism potential

K OCHI: The concept of graveyard tourism may initially seem morbid, but it is emerging as a lucrative industry worldwide—and Kerala is rich with untapped potential. Driven by increasing interest in genealogy and funerary history, cemeteries are becoming valued sites of shared heritage. With historic graves of Portuguese, Dutch, Jewish, and British settlers scattered throughout the state, Kerala has the potential to transform the solemn sites into vibrant cultural hotspots for tourists.

Fort Kochi-based Cochin Collective is leading an initiative to raise awareness among government and Church authorities on the benefits of opening these cemeteries to visitors. The effort aims to preserve the historic tombs while rekindling cultural connections with the descendants of those interred.

“There’s an urgent need to protect our cemeteries, and tourism offers a way to fund their preservation,” said Stephen Robert, patron of Cochin Collective.

“The Dutch Cemetery in Fort Kochi, once a symbol of our shared heritage, is now in a state of neglect. The same goes for the Jewish cemetery and several historically significant churches. It’s time to pay attention and preserve this slice of history,” Stephen noted. He draws a parallel with Paris’ Pere-Lachaise Cemetery, where notable figures like Jim Morrison and Oscar Wilde are buried.

The site attracts over 2.5 million visitors annually, ranking among the world’s top tourist destinations. Similarly, London’s Highgate Cemetery, home to Karl Marx’s tomb, draws large crowds, contributing to its upkeep and supporting local communities.

Fr Dr Douglas Pinheiro, Parish Priest of Infant Jesus Church in Ernakulam—one of India’s oldest Anglo-Indian churches with a 200-year legacy—emphasises on the cultural richness embedded in these graves.

‘Exploring cemeteries has now become a trend’

“Many of the tombs belong to individuals from Portugal, the Netherlands, and England, carrying stories of migration, resilience, and shared history,” he explained. He said many people approach the church seeking information on their ancestors and suggested that the graveyards be transformed into cultural sites where visitors can learn and enjoy moments of tranquillity. Journalist and writer N P Chekutty notes that ‘cemetery tourism’ has gained traction, fuelled by growing interest in genealogy and a more open approach to discussing death.

“Researching ancestry has become a major commercial activity worldwide. Exploring cemeteries has become trendy as people delve into family histories and seek connections with their roots,” he said.

Chekutty also said there are sites that help people test their DNA to link them to their ancestors. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, for instance, helps millions discover their heritage and connect with family members.

Kerala is home to over 100 burial sites, stretching from Kannur to Udayagiri, with many Europeans interred, especially in plantation areas. Chekutty, who has written two books—Malabar: Christian Memorials 1737-1990 and The Nilgiri Hills: Christian Memorials 1822-2000—has assisted many in tracing their ancestry and believes that the government needs to be proactive in preserving these sites. Churches might struggle to manage these sites as real estate pressures mount.

By embracing cemetery tourism, Kerala could transform these forgotten graves into windows to the past while preserving a heritage that spans continents, Chekutty added.
