Whether you’re seeking adventure, culture, or relaxation, Lemnos promises a multitude of unforgettable experiences.

From sandboarding on the dunes to wine and cheese pairings at sunset, visitors will be immersed in the island’s enchanting charm, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Lemnos Overview

History and culture.

Lemnos, also known as Limnos, is an Eastern Aegean Greek island with a rich history and culture. The island is steeped in mythology, being the domain of the Greek god Hephaestus who served as the god of fire and metalworking. Over time Lemnos has borne witness to several ancient civilisations, archaeological sites and religious monuments which have shaped the culture of the island.

Throughout its extensive history, Lemnos has been a crossroads for different empires and civilisations, such as the Persians, Athenians, Romans, and Byzantines. These diverse influences have resulted in a unique blend of art and architecture.

In terms of contemporary culture, visitors to Lemnos can experience the island’s local traditions, including its annual wine and honey festivals. The island also hosts the Art Gallery of Contemporary Balkan Art, which showcases the creative talent in the region.

Lemnos is situated in the North Aegean Sea, nestled between Samothraki island to the North East and Agios Efstratios to the South West. With a coastline of 310 km, it is the fourth largest island in Greece. The island’s landscape is characterised by wild desserts, tropical dunes, rugged coastlines, and thermal springs, making it an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.

In terms of accessibility, both Lesvos and Thassos islands are nearby with regular ferry connections, making travel between these locations more convenient for visitors. Lemnos’ secluded location far from Athens adds to its charm and enables visitors to explore its unspoilt beauty without the crowds.

Best Time to Visit

Lemnos experiences pleasant weather during the summer months, especially from June to August. This period is typically the best time to visit the island for a beach holiday. During June and early July, some evenings may be slightly cooler, so bringing a light sweatshirt for nighttime is recommended. In May, the sea is still cold and daytime temperatures may not exceed 20°C (68°F), particularly in the early part of the month.

The island has a milder climate in winter (December to February), with average high temperatures ranging between 10.7°C (51.3°F) and 15°C (59°F). However, this period witnesses more rain or snow, with 4 to 7 occurrences per month.

Events and Festivals

Lemnos hosts a range of local events and festivals throughout the year, showcasing its rich cultural heritage and offering visitors a chance to experience authentic Greek island life. Some of the popular events in Lemnos include:

  • Wine Festival (August): This annual festival celebrates the island’s wine culture, showcasing local winemakers and featuring wine tasting, traditional music, dancing, and culinary delights.
  • Agios Ioannis Festival (August): Taking place in the village of Kaspakas, this religious celebration honours St. John the Baptist with cultural events, local music, and traditional feasts.

Petrides provided a fantastic car service for my Lemnos trip. Their prices were reasonable and the car they offered was perfect for my needs. What really made them stand out was their excellent customer service, especially from Maria at the old port office. She made the whole process very easy and pleasant from beginning to end and even went out of her way to work through a credit card issue that arose on my end. I could have lost an entire half day or more, but because of her I was out on the road immediately and enjoying some wonderful beaches instead. She’s an invaluable employee at a very recommended company. Thanks!

The best car rental company of the island, trust me. And Maria, thanks a lot for your support, and i just want to mention that our 3 years old baby girl has really loved you and still talking about the chocolate you gave:)

A rainbow-colored Pride flag, which celebrates L.G.B.T.Q. culture, hangs from a flagpole amid palm fronds and other tropical foliage typical of Florida.

Looking for Information on L.G.B.T.Q. Travel to Florida? Don’t Ask Florida.

The state’s travel website recently removed pages dedicated to L.G.B.T.Q. travel. Some Floridians aren’t happy about it.

For years, L.G.B.T.Q. people planning a trip to Florida could turn to the official website for Visit Florida , the state’s tourism marketing organization, for resources on where to go, what to eat and where to stay. While there are other resources for queer travelers, the site offered information about L.G.B.T.Q.-owned businesses that visitors could patronize as well as activities “appealing to a gay community looking for a sense of belonging and acceptance,” a page on the site once read.

But sometime in the past few months, Visit Florida — a private-public, nonprofit partnership created by the Florida Legislature in 1996 — quietly took down pages with information for L.G.B.T.Q. travelers. Although no one has been able to pinpoint exactly when the pages were removed, NBC first reported on their removal on Aug. 19 and said it had happened sometime this summer. Some residents, activists and people in the local tourism industry said that erasing the pages sends the message that L.G.B.T.Q. travelers aren’t welcome in the state.

Visit Florida and the office of Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, did not respond to numerous requests for comment.

At a news conference on Wednesday, a day after this article was published online, Mr. DeSantis said he only learned about the removal of the L.G.B.T.Q. travel pages after they had been taken down. “Our view as a state is we are the best place to visit, we’re welcome to all, but we’re not going to be segregating people by these different characteristics,” he said. “That’s not how we’ve done business in any of the things that we’ve done.”

“There’s a reason these pages existed in the first place,” said Nadine Smith, the executive director of Equality Florida , an advocacy group for L.G.B.T.Q. people, in a phone interview. Their purpose, she said, is “to roll out the welcome mat and say, ‘Hey, you know what? Your family is going to be safe and comfortable here,’” “So if you take away that welcome mat, the only message that you can deliver is ‘We do not want you to feel safe and welcome you.’”

Ms. Smith is one of many who feel that the removal of the pages is a continuation of the hostile policies facing L.G.B.T.Q. people in the state in recent years. It comes two years after Mr. DeSantis signed what opponents called “Don’t Say Gay” legislation, limiting what teachers can say about gender and sexuality.

Like many destination marketing organizations across the country, Visit Florida receives state funding , which the governor signs off on. (Mr. DeSantis granted Visit Florida $80 million for its 2024-25 fiscal year, which the organization uses for marketing.)

“The thing that’s most interesting about this is that it was done quietly,” Ms. Smith said.

In April 2023, Ms. Smith’s organization , along with the L.G.B.T.Q.-focused Human Rights Campaign and the N.A.A.C.P. , warned travelers to reconsider going to Florida because they felt that Mr. DeSantis’s policies were hostile toward L.G.B.T.Q. people, immigrants and people of color.

Colin Lienhard, a gay architect and designer who lives in Miami, said that he had felt a shift in people’s openness toward gay people, even in liberal Miami, and so he wasn’t surprised by the removal of the pages. The effort to hide information that could be helpful feels like a continuation of what he feels has become normal in Florida: asking L.G.B.T.Q. people to be silent. “It’s another example of them trying to erase that we are here,” he said.

For years, L.G.B.T.Q. travelers have flocked to cities and towns like St. Petersburg, Key West and Sarasota, which have been welcoming to them.

Local tourism marketing organizations have often encouraged diverse travelers. For instance, in 2022, Visit Lauderdale, which promotes the Greater Fort Lauderdale area to the world, released a campaign called “Everyone Under the Sun.” At the time, the agency’s chief executive and president, Stacy Ritter, said the goal was to ensure that all visitors knew they were welcome.

“Our diversity is our strength, and we are proudly telling this story to the world,” she said in a statement announcing the campaign.

But local marketing organizations like Visit Lauderdale rely on Visit Florida, the state site, as a valuable entry point. Last week, as news of the removal of Visit Florida’s L.G.B.T.Q. pages spread, Ms. Ritter reiterated that Fort Lauderdale continued to value diversity.

“While Visit Florida removes its L.G.B.T.Q.+ page from its website, Visit Lauderdale values, respects and sees those from marginalized communities and commits to providing them a welcoming and inclusive experience,” she wrote on LinkedIn on Aug. 20.

When Rob Dougherty, the executive director for the Key West Business Guild , a nonprofit that promotes Key West to L.G.B.T.Q. travelers, first heard about the removal of the pages last week, he reached out to the leaders of Visit Florida because he hoped the removal had been a mistake or a glitch. After his questions went unanswered for days, he expressed his frustration on social media.

“The silence is troubling,” he wrote on the Gay Key West Facebook page. He reminded the followers of that page that his organization’s goals of supporting L.G.B.T.Q. people living in and visiting Key West had not changed, even if the state’s stance seemingly had. In a phone call, he said it felt important to say something about the removal.

“ I don’t want to sound reactionary,” he said, “but I feel like if we don’t respond, then are we allowing the next step? What will be erased next?”

When is Labor Day 2024? What to know about history of holiday and why it's celebrated

The calendar is getting ready to flip from August to September, which will soon mean the return of colorful leaves on trees, football season and bonfires. It also means Labor Day is approaching, meaning the unofficial end of summer.

During the three-day Labor Day weekend, many Americans will travel , shop for deals online and in-store and maybe sneak in one final visit to the beach or neighborhood pool.

However, the federal holiday is much more than just the summer's last hurrah. Observed each year on the first Monday of September, Labor Day is at heart a celebration of the hard-won achievements of America's labor movement and a recognition of what workers have contributed to the nation's prosperity.

Here's what to know about the Labor Day holiday, including when it is in 2024 and how it started.

When should you leave? The best and worst times for traffic over Labor Day Weekend 2024

When is Labor Day in 2024?

In 2024, Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 2.

Why do we celebrate Labor Day?

Rooted in the the labor movement of the 19th century, the holiday originated during a dismal time for America's workers, who faced long hours, low wages and unsafe conditions.

As labor unions and activists advocated and fought for better treatment for workers at the height of the Industrial Revolution, the idea arose to establish a day dedicated to celebrating the members of trade and labor unions,  according to History.com .

Even today, many Americans continue to celebrate Labor Day with parades and parties − festivities outlined in the first proposal for a holiday, according to the  U.S. Department of Labor . Since those early celebrations, Labor Day is now also marked with speeches by elected officials and community leaders who emphasize the economic and civic significance of the holiday.

How did Labor Day begin?

Two workers can make a solid claim to the title of Labor Day's official founder, according to the labor department.

Some records show that it was Peter J. McGuire, the co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, who in 1882 first suggested the idea for the holiday. However, recent research supports the contention that machinist Matthew Maguire proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York.

Regardless of which man deserves the credit, Labor Day soon became recognized by labor activists and individual states long before it became a federal holiday.

Organized by the Central Labor Union, the first Labor Day holiday was celebrated in 1882 in New York City, according to the labor department. On that day, 10,000 workers took unpaid time off to march from City Hall to Union Square, according to History.com.

New York was also the first state to introduce a bill recognizing Labor Day, but Oregon was the first to pass such a law in 1887, according to the labor department. By 1894, 32 states had adopted the holiday.

When did Labor Day first become federally recognized?

Labor Day became a national holiday in 1894 when President Grover Cleveland signed a law passed by Congress designating the first Monday in September a holiday for workers.

But the federal recognition was hard-won, having come after a wave of unrest among workers and labor activists brought the issue of workers' rights into public view.

In May that year, employees of the Pullman Palace Car Company in Chicago went on strike to protest wage cuts and the firing of union representatives, according to History.com. A month later, the government dispatched troops to Chicago to break up a boycott of the Pullman railway cars initiated by labor activist Eugene V. Debs, unleashing a wave of fatal riots.

Congress quickly passed an act making Labor Day a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. By June 28, Cleveland signed it into law.

happy traveller limnos

lemnos greece happy traveller (12)
