How To Become A Tour Guide In Mexico

October 6, 2022

In Mexico, tour guides are typically certified by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). There are three levels of certification, each requiring progressively more experience and Spanish-language proficiency. The first level, Aspirante a Guía de Turismo, is open to anyone with basic Spanish skills. The second level, Guía Nacional de Turismo, requires at least six months of guiding experience. The third and highest level, Guía Internacional de Turismo, requires at least two years of experience and fluency in a foreign language.

You can take advantage of the incredible excursions available on the Riviera Maya and select a private tour guide. In the event that you book with a reputable company, your tour guide will be fully qualified. We’ll go over some more tips for finding the best private tour guides in the Riviera Mayas below. A tour guide in Mexico must have a license, which must be passed after attending training and passing an examination. The local history is one of the topics covered during this training. You can be confident that everything will be organized for you by the guide, and you won’t have to worry about turning up because the guide will do it for you. A private tour guide is a trained professional who enjoys taking you on a tour with them because he or she is familiar with the destination.

If you work with them, you will be able to enjoy the best views, secret locations, and the best of everything a location has to offer. Can I speak Spanish? All you have to do is have a personal translator stand by to take care of all of your translation needs.

There are no formal requirements for becoming a tour guide in most cases. While most training is done under the supervision of an experienced guide , there is a chance for voluntary certification related to a specific country, culture, site, or tourism zone.

Anyone who wishes to work in this country must first obtain a visa. People working for Mexican firms, for example, may require a residency visa with the ability to work. A visitor’s visa can be obtained with permission for individuals working for a foreign company in Mexico for less than six months.

A Mexican work visa, also known as a Visitor Visa, allows visitors to engage in leisure activities without the need to obtain a work permit. Mexico offers a wide range of long-term visas, including Visitor, Temporary Resident, and Permanent Resident visas. The first article I wrote for Transitions Abroad covered how to find a teaching job in Mexico. The Visitor Visa, like a driver’s license, is a piece of official identification with a letter on it. Obtaining a Visitor Visa (and lucrative activities) entitles you to social security benefits, as well as health insurance.

I received my Visitor Visa card with my fingerprints and a receipt when I arrived at the university in Mexico City. It made no sense to ask why they were calling me to inform me that the system was ready, even if it wasn’t. I had to sign a form for the card in order for them to print it the next day.

In Mexico, jobs for foreigners can help you expand your network and build your skills, and in your off time, you can hit the beaches and explore pre-Columbian ruins. And don’t sleep on the chilaquiles !

Best Cities for Expats

The best places to work in Mexico are generally either the big cities or the coastal regions—of which there are two—the Caribbean or the Pacific.

Mexico City . The capital, known as the D.F. (for Distrito Federal , pronounced “day eff-ay”), is one of the largest cities in the world. As you can imagine, it’s not for the faint of heart, but it will be an easy place to connect with fellow expats because there are plenty of people from all over who take jobs abroad in Mexico here. It’s a convenient location to launch from for tourism to the rest of the country when you’re not working.

Cancun /Yucatan Peninsula. Home of the Riviera Maya. A year-round tropical destination for fun in the sun, biodiversity, and Mayan history. Mexico jobs for foreigners here understandably center around the tourism and hospitality industry.

Puerto Vallarta . Hop over to the Pacific Coast to find another coastal destination for work abroad in Mexico. The scene here can be a bit more quirky and stylish than what you’ll find in the Yucatan. It’s also known as Mexico’s most LGBT-friendly beach community. Keep this in mind while you’re looking for places to work in Mexico.

Popular Job Types

Being one of the most-visited countries in the world, it’s easy to find jobs abroad in Mexico in the tourism industry. Its globalized economy also puts English in high demand, so education jobs abound. If you’ve got skills in some other profession, don’t fret—there are countless opportunities in other sectors, as well.

Hospitality/ Tourism . Hotels, restaurants, tour guides, bartenders, adventure travel. You name it, and you’ll find work in Mexico for it. Jobs like these may be most abundant on the coasts, but are available throughout the country. Being offered under-the-table work in this sector isn’t unheard of, so be sure you know what your legal rights and responsibilities are before you accept any offers.

Education . Maybe the most versatile option for international jobs in Mexico, English teachers can be placed in all kinds of public and private schools, language institutes, and corporate education programs around the country. TEFL certification is a plus, though not always necessary, and some agencies offer programs to get the certification in-country. Even if language instruction isn’t your dream job, there are other ways to capitalize on your status as a foreigner to help Mexico’s youth compete in the global economy some day.

Estimated Salaries

Choosing to work abroad in Mexico in the tourism or education sectors probably won’t make you rich, but with the relatively low cost of living compared with many other places in the world, you should be able to cover your expenses and make your budget work for you while you work abroad in Mexico, especially if you’ve done a little saving before you go. Keep in mind that the biggest cities and popular tourist destinations will probably be a little less affordable than the destinations you haven’t heard so much about.

Accommodations & Visas

Many jobs abroad in Mexico, particularly short-term or seasonal work in the tourism and education sectors, include housing, a housing stipend, or help with housing placement. Mexico jobs for foreigners can be a fun way to get to know the country, but they aren’t necessarily glamorous. Accomodations aren’t luxurious. Dorm- or apartment-style housing may be shared with other expats and seasonal employees. Nanny jobs often include living with the family for whom you work. Some international jobs in Mexico may also provide a travel stipend—either up front or after completion of your contract—to help you fund the cost of your flight.

What kind of visa you’ll need for jobs abroad in Mexico will depend on how long you plan to work in Mexico and where you’re coming from. If visas are required, you’ll need to apply for them with plenty of time to spare in order to receive your visa before you enter the country. Processing can take 30 days or more, so be sure to plan well in advance. Use the GoAbroad embassy directory to get a head start on your research.

GoAbroad's Inside Scoop

Working abroad may be your long-term plan. Or maybe work abroad in Mexico is just something you want to try for a little. Something different. A change of scenery. No matter your reasons, it will be a worthwhile adventure . You’ll build resiliency, intercultural competence, and language skills while checking some world-class destinations off your bucket list and refining your vision for your personal and professional future. As long as you take the work seriously and plan your budget realistically before you embark on this professional journey, even a “detour” shouldn’t derail your career ambitions.

Being a young professional in Mexico should be fun! Mexicans work hard , but they also know how to enjoy their friends, their families, and their downtime. Take your co-workers up on the invitation to join them for an after-work cerveza . Eat all of the food (and learn how to eat it spicy). Take some time to be a tourist in your new home. There is history and natural beauty to be seen no matter where you end up in Mexico. Make sure you take time to enjoy it!

Seasonal Jobs in Mexico

Cancun beach

Mexico is one of the most appealing destinations in the world which attracts millions of international tourists every year. If you like the idea of working in Mexico, there are lots of opportunities for foreigners and English speakers. Search temporary, summer and year round jobs in places like Cancun and Mexico City.

Mexico Facts

• Population: 123,166,749 • GDP: $2.31 Trillion • GDP / Capita: $18,900 • Capital City: Mexico City • Dialing Code: +52 • Currency: Mexican peso

Top Reasons to Move to Mexico

If you have the right attitude and are open to different cultures and norms, then Mexico could be the perfect destination for you. Benefits of moving here include:

• Unique culture and friendly people • Learn Spanish or improve your language skills • Choice of destinations from ancient cities to beautiful tourist resorts • Cheap cost of living especially compared to the United States • High salaries compared to other countries nearby like Belize , Guatemala and Cuba • Mexico does have a reputation for being dangerous, but in the main tourist destinations it is very safe to live and travel • When working here you’ll get to sample the cultural highlights and also the excellent beaches. There are many, many beaches which are more popular among the locals than the foreign tourists, throughout the coasts.

Popular Places to Work

The larger cities and tourism hotspots are the best places to find employment, including:

• Cancun • Playa del Carmen • Mexico City

Other popular tourism destinations are also recommended for finding employment for foreigners like Acapulco, Tulum, Zihuatanejo, Cozumel, Ixtapa and Guanajuato.

Types of Positions

Tourism The travel and tourism industry employs thousands of people, from hotels, hostels, hospitality, resorts, activity instructors e.g. yoga and scuba diving, tour guides and more. You can find jobs online with large international hotel brands where hire thousands of staff each year.

Teaching English Popular with gap years and backpacking, or people looking for an easy way to live overseas, take a TEFL certification and teach in Mexico. There are language schools throughout the country hiring foreigners.

Voluntary work Although generally unpaid, there are so many rewarding volunteer abroad programs available to help communities, wildlife and conservation efforts. Popular projects include working with marine animals, building houses or contributing to environmental protection. Some backpackers also do cultural exchanges for example working in hostels in exchange for free accommodation.

Remote Work Find a job online or freelance and you can work anywhere in the country.

Jobs in Cancun

Cancun is also located on the Yucatan Peninsula, in the state of Quintana Roo, and is considered to be in direct competition with Acapulco in terms of drawing in the international crowd. While the city center of Cancun is located on the mainland, the Hotel Zone where most tourists stay is located on a separate island connected through bridges to the mainland, and this is where most jobs are found.

The facilities of the Hotel Zone cater more to the international crowd of holiday goers, so the local flavors are all concentrated on the central part of the city on the mainland. Some recruiters offer positions with accommodation included.

Benefits of working in Cancun as well as the beaches, warm weather and lifestyle, there are also some ruins of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization in Cancun. A small one called Ruinas El Rey is found in the Hotel Zone while a bigger ruin called El Meco is found just on the outskirts of the city – both are worth visiting.

Jobs in Playa Del Carmen

Are you looking for a location to kick back and relax then this Mexican coastal resort town is for you. It’s down the road from Cancun, but Playa offers a much richer experience in our opinion. Enjoy a healthy work/life balance, mix a job with relaxing with a refreshing cocktail on a beachside bar, snorkelling amongst coral reefs and picking up a spot of shopping along the main strip.

Summer Jobs in Mexico

Mexico has miles upon miles of coastline, some six thousand of them, stretching along the Gulf of Mexico to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. These beaches of Mexico are very popular among tourists, both local and foreign. A large group of holiday goers to Mexico are college students from the United States, enjoying freedom from school on their spring break.

If you would like to do more than partying you can find short term jobs from June to September, these pistons are very popular with students and graduates especially from the USA. Managers, sales, marketing, bartenders, chefs, djs, dancers and many more positions are available.

Working in Mexico FAQ

Visa & Requirements You do need a work permit to legally work in Mexico. Some international and local recruiters can help you obtain this by offering you employment and sponsoring your visa.

Language Learning basic Spanish is highly recommended to boost employment prospects. Although lots of jobs advertised only need English, knowing Spanish or other language is really beneficial. It will also help with cultural integration and living here. You could search courses with Spanish schools in Mexico .

Safety Mexico is much safer than you might imagine especially in the areas where most foreign staff work. In places like Cancun there are lots of police and also checkpoints setup in the area to keep tourists safe.

A mayan ruin also known as the Temple of Kukulcan. It is a Mesoamerican step-pyramid which dominates the land.

7 of the best Maya ruins to visit in Mexico

Remnants of ancient civilisations still stand across Central America — and well-preserved temples and jungle-cloaked pyramids are open to visitors across southern Mexico.

Before the Spanish colonised Central America in the 16th century, the ancient Maya were one of the most sophisticated civilisations in the Western Hemisphere. They developed a complex calendar system through their knowledge of astrology and mathematics, used intricate hieroglyphics to record their history and built large, lavishly decorated cities, complete with pyramids, temples, and plazas.

At its height, the ancient Maya civilisation comprised 40 cities across Central America, spanning southern Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, El Salvador and Nicaragua. In the southern Mexican states of Yucatán, Quintana Roo and Chiapas, many of these settlements — the largest housed up to 50,000 people — still stand today, offering visitors a unique insight into the social, cultural and religious lives of the ancient Maya.

From carefully reconstructed sites like Chichen Itza to the wild, jungle-clad pyramids and ceremonial temples of Calakmul, these are the ancient Maya ruins not to miss in southern Mexico.

1. Chichen Itza

Named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, the beautifully preserved Chichen Itza in Yucatán is Mexico’s most famous Maya ruin. Despite the crowds, few are disappointed with El Castillo — a carefully restored pyramid that rises up 80ft and has 365 steps — or the city’s tlachtli , the largest Maya ball court in the Americas.

Occupied until the 16th century, Tulum was one of the last cities inhabited by the Maya and the only one built by the coast. The pyramids here aren’t as large as other Maya ruins in Mexico, but the setting, on 40ft-high cliffs above turquoise Caribbean waters south of Cancun, more than makes up for it.

Home to the tallest pyramid in the state of Quintana Roo, Cobá was once one of the most important Maya cities in Yucatán. Located around 30 miles west of Tulum ruins, the city was built in around 600 CE and it eventually grew to 50,000 inhabitants. Though much of Cobá has yet to be excavated, travellers can climb the 138ft-high Nohoch Mul — a pyramid that offers sweeping views over the Yucatán jungle. Cobá is also known for its sophisticated sacbe,   or ‘white road’2,   network —   limestone pathways that connect the city to neighbouring settlements.

An ancient maya ruin in Palenque, southern Mexico. The grass is vibrant green and the sky is bright blue.

4. Palenque

Deep in the jungles of northeastern Chiapas state in southern Mexico lies Palenque , a Late Classic Maya city known for its detailed hieroglyphic inscriptions and sculpted reliefs. These highly sophisticated designs have helped archaeologists understand more of the ancient Maya's history, mythology and calendar systems.

5. Calakmul

Cloaked by the second-largest expanse of tropical forests in the Americas, in Campeche’s Calakmul Biosphere Reserve near the border with Guatemala, Calakmul is one of Mexico’s wildest Maya ruins. It has the largest and tallest pyramid in Yucatán and more than 6,000 structures, many of them covered by jungle. The site is particularly beautiful at sunrise, when the surrounding jungle comes alive with birdsong, howler monkeys and, if you’re lucky, the roar of a jaguar.

6. Ek Balam

Around 25 miles north of the Yucatán city of Valladolid is Ek Balam , which means ‘black jaguar’ or ‘jaguar star’ in the Yucatec Maya language. The city reached its height in the eight century, when more than 20,000 people lived here. Its largest pyramid is 160 metres long and 105ft high, and contains the tomb of Ukit Kan Le´t Tok, the king of Ek Balam between 770 CE and around 797 CE. Archaeologists found the ruler buried with more than 7,000 pieces of jade, bone, ceramic, shell and precious metal, and the outside walls decorated with stone jaguars, winged creatures and human skulls.

A one-hour drive from the Yucatán capital of Merida is this seventh-century Maya city, once large enough to house 25,000 inhabitants. The Uxmal ruins are part of the Ruta Puuc, a 25-mile road network that connects Uxmal with the archaeological sites of Kabah, Sayil, Xlapak, Labná, Oxkintok, Grutas de Calcehtok and Grutas de Loltún.

Where to Find AAA TourBook Guides and Maps

Updated : April 23, 2024

Michelle Palmer

Table of contents, what information is in a tourbook, what else will i find, travel information from experts you can trust, where can i find aaa maps.

Get TourBook ® guides for destinations across the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean at TourBook.AAA.com , and find paper maps at your local AAA offices as well as printable maps at AAA’s online map gallery.

Since 1926, AAA’s free TourBook guides have been providing trustworthy travel information to AAA members. The digital guide is the same great TourBook you know and love, but now you can get that information and more in an eco-friendly, easy-to-use format on your smartphone, tablet or desktop. It is also downloadable, so you can access the guide wherever you are at any time of day.

Go from dreaming about your next vacation — whether that’s a family adventure to Yosemite, a romantic getaway in Asheville or a fun trip with friends in Austin — to planning with this interactive guide. You can find a hotel with ease and book your room with just a click of the Book Now button. Save money with access to special deals and benefits available only to AAA members, and you can rest assured that wherever you choose to stay, it will be clean and comfortable. Or follow the link to contact a travel agent at your local AAA office. They can assist you with a complete vacation package from finding the best deals and booking your hotel to helping you plan an entire itinerary.

All hotels in the guide have earned a AAA Diamond designation by going through rigorous evaluations conducted by AAA’s team of professional inspectors. Not only are they clean; you can know what level of amenities are offered making it easy to choose a hotel that best suits your budget and your preferences.

Save time planning your trip by using our helpful articles. AAA’s team of travel editors has created one-day itineraries that you can follow exactly to get the most out of a short excursion. Alternatively, use them as a guide to get an idea of where things are in a city to assist in planning your trip, so you don’t waste valuable vacation time.

Our travel editors also have identified must-see attractions including AAA GEMs (Great Experience for Members ® ) that shouldn’t be missed. These include stops ranging from the Montréal Botanical Garden and The Field Museum in Chicago to the Painted Desert in the Petrified Forest National Park. They have also noted top places to take children, so everyone of all ages has a good time during your family vacation.

Unlike the printed guides, the digital TourBook includes road trips. You can use these to plan out an entire itinerary like a classic trip down Route 66 or a drive up the Northern California coast. Our suggested routes include stops such as tasty local restaurants to refuel, museums to learn about the area, and parks to recharge and stretch your legs in an idyllic setting. Or use them to take a detour down a scenic byway through forests, around lakes and even for leaf-peeping in the fall.

  • Diamond-designated restaurants with information on cuisine
  • Sports and recreation, including where to catch games as well as places to hike, bike, golf and other activities
  • Recreation charts to quickly identify national, state, provincial and local parks, as well as available activities and amenities
  • High-quality maps to see nearby cities, national parks and scenic natural features
  • Interactive table of contents that navigates where you want in just a click
  • Shopping information on malls and specialty districts
  • Nightlife articles to find the best bars and late-night eats

For more than 80 years, AAA’s expert inspectors have been evaluating hotels and restaurants across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica and the Caribbean. They conduct surprise evaluations based on a rigorous set of guidelines to provide members with detailed comments on what to expect at AAA Diamond-designated hotels and restaurants.

Unlike other rating systems that are based solely on travelers’ experiences, AAA inspectors determine Diamond designations on-site and according to established guidelines and requirements. The AAA Diamond Program reflects the latest in industry trends and travelers’ expectations. The designations not only indicate the level of amenities that you can expect at a property; they also assure that hotels offer a clean, comfortable experience no matter the budget.

Our team of AAA travel editors has been providing travel advice and information for members since the release of the first TourBook in 1926. They are experienced travelers who provide in-depth information on cities and attractions as well as sample travel plans. With the AAA TourBook guides, AAA’s travel information is more convenient than ever.

There are a few ways to get AAA maps. Firstly, you can stop by your local AAA office to pick up paper maps of U.S., Canada and Mexico — for free for AAA members. Plus, select offices carry an atlas of North America.

The second way you can get maps is via the AAA Map Gallery , an online gallery where you can access printable maps of destinations in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, as well as maps of cruise terminals and national parks.

The other way to access maps is with TripTik Travel Planner . The TripTik tool allows you to plan and save routes, find important points of interest like hotels (including pet-friendly hotels), campgrounds, restaurants and attractions as well as identify locations that offer discounts and savings to AAA members.

Bon Jovi docuseries 'Thank You, Goodnight' is an argument for respect

Hulu's docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story , spends a lot of time building up the Bon Jovi legend — exploring the band's almost unbelievable 40-plus-year run from playing hardscrabble rock clubs in New Jersey to earning platinum albums and entry into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

But what moved me most in the four-part series was something more revealing: its close look at the struggle by lead singer Jon Bon Jovi to overcome vocal problems which nearly led him to quit the band.

Footage of the singer croaking through vocal exercises, undergoing laser treatments, enduring acupuncture and finally turning to surgery is sprinkled throughout the series, which toggles back and forth between his problems in 2022 and a chronological story of the band's triumphs and tragedies from its earliest days.

Through it all, a question hangs: Will Bon Jovi ever recover enough vocal strength to lead a 40th anniversary tour?

"If I can't be the very best I can be, I'm out," he tells the cameras, still looking a bit boyish despite his voluminous gray hair at age 62. "I'm not here to drag down the legacy, I'm not here for the 'Where are they now?' tour ... I'm not ever gonna be the Fat Elvis ... That ain't happening."

Filmmaker Gotham Chopra — who has also directed docuseries about his father, spiritualist Deepak Chopra, and star quarterback Tom Brady — digs deeply into the band's history, aided by boatloads of pictures, video footage and early recordings provided by the group.

Chopra gets folks from the group's tight inner circle to speak up, including former manager Doc McGhee and guitarist Richie Sambora, who quit the band in 2013. ("Are we telling the truth, or are we going to lie, what are we going to do?" Sambora cracks to his offscreen interviewer. "Let's figure it out.")

But anyone expecting gossipy dish will walk away disappointed. Even major scandals in the band's history are handled with care, including the firing of founding bassist Alec John Such in 1994 (and the admission that his replacement, Hugh McDonald, already had been secretly playing bass parts on their albums for years), drummer Tico Torres' stint in addiction treatment and Sambora's decision to quit midway through a tour in 2013, with no notice to bandmates he had performed alongside for 30 years.

Sambora's explanation: When issues with substance use and family problems led him to miss recording sessions, Bon Jovi got producer John Shanks to play more guitar on their 2013 record What About Now . And Sambora was hurt.

"[Bon Jovi] had the whole thing kinda planned out," Sambora says, "which basically was telling me, um, 'I can do it without you.'"

Building a band on rock anthems

The docuseries shows how young New Jersey native John Bongiovi turned a job as a gofer at legendary recording studio The Power Station – owned by a cousin — into a recording of his first hit in the early 1980s, Runaway . His song eventually caught the ear of another little-known artist from New Jersey called Bruce Springsteen.

"The first demo I got of Jon's was a good song," says Springsteen, a longtime friend of Bon Jovi. "I mean, Jon's great talent is these big, powerful pop rock choruses that just demand to be sung by, you know, 20,000 people in an arena."

Rock Star Jon Bon Jovi Comes Full 'Circle'

Music Interviews

Rock star jon bon jovi comes full 'circle'.

Thank You, Goodnight shows the band really took off by honing those rock anthems with songwriter Desmond Child, while simultaneously developing videos that showcased their status as a fun, rollicking live band. Hits like You Give Love a Bad Name, Livin' on a Prayer and Wanted: Dead or Alive made them MTV darlings and rock superstars.

Through it all, the singer and bandleader is shown as the group's visionary and spark plug, open about how strategically he pushed the band to write hit songs and positioned them for commercial success.

"It wasn't as though I woke up one morning and was the best singer in the school, or on the block, or in my house," he tells the camera, laughing. "I just had a desire and a work ethic that was always the driving force."

I saw that dynamic up close in the mid-1990s when I worked as a music critic in New Jersey, spending time with Jon Bon Jovi and the band. Back then, his mother ran the group's fan club and was always trying to convince the local rock critic to write about her superstar son – I was fascinated by how the band shrugged off criticisms of being uncool and survived changing musical trends, led by a frontman who worked hard to stay grounded.

Bon Jovi was always gracious and willing to talk; he even introduced me to then-New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman at one of his legendary Christmas charity concerts. (And in a crazy coincidence, the band's backup singer Everett Bradley is an old friend from college.)

I think the docuseries captures Bon Jovi's skill at leading the group through challenges musical and otherwise — from metal's slow fade off the pop charts to the rise of grunge rock — something the singer rarely gets credit for achieving.

Still, much of Thank You, Goodnight feels like an extended celebration of the band and its charismatic frontman, leavened by his earnest effort to regain control of his voice. If you're not a Bon Jovi fan, four episodes of this story may feel like a bit much (I'd recommend at least watching the first and last episodes.)

More than anything, the docuseries feels like an extended argument for something Bon Jovi has struggled to achieve, even amid million selling records and top-grossing concert tours – respect as a legendary rock band.

The audio and digital versions of this story were edited by Jennifer Vanasco .
