Wildgall in December 2016 – Rare earths

In December 2016 I was on the Wildgall with Manuel Baumgartner. The “Rare Earths” tour has only been around since 2014. With us there were two other rope teams in the route. The weather was great. We started at about 7 o’clock in the morning at the Antholzer See, at the summit we were already at 12 o’clock.

Nordwestgrat (ad-).

Der "Hohe glänzende Berg", wie er in historischen Erwähnungen genannt wurde, stellt zusammen mit seinem Nachbarn, dem als "Wilder schimmernder Berg" bezeichneten Wildgall eine beeindruckende Bergkulisse in der Rieserfernergruppe dar. Er ist nicht nur die höchste Erhebung in dieser Gebirgsgruppe, sondern auch von keiner Seite aus einfach zu besteigen. Es gibt sowohl von der Barmer Hütte über die Ostflanke und den Nordostgrat einen Normalweg auf den Gipfel, als auch von der Kasseler Hütte über das Graue Nöckl und den Nordwestgrat. Beides sind wunderbare Gratklettereien und ein ganz besonderes Bergerlebnis auf einen der formschönsten Gipfel in den gesamten Ostalpen. Die bis in die 80er Jahre sehr beliebte Nordwand ist mittlerweile fast zur Gänze abgeschmolzen und wird nur mehr selten gemacht.

Hochgall - Normalweg: Die Route über den Nordwestgrat beginnt bereits viel tiefer im Reintal. Nämlich auf dem Parkplatz beim Gasthaus Säge. Der steil durch den Wald aufsteigende 8er Weg führt nach etwas mehr als 650 Höhenmeter bei der Kasseler Hütte vorbei. Wer sich diese 2-3 Stunden Aufstieg am Gipfeltag sparen möchte gönnt sich am besten eine Übernachtung in dieser sympathischen Hütte. Am nächsten Tag geht es dann direkt weiter zum Grauen Nöckl, wo die spannende und wirklich schöne Gratkletterei, die bis auf den Gipfel führt beginnt. Auch der Abstieg erfolgt wieder entlang dieser Aufstiegsroute. Von der Hütte bis zum Gipfel und zurück muss man noch einmal mit 7-8 Stunden rechnen.

Diese Leistungen sind im Preis dabei:

- Gesamte Organisation und Führung durch einen staatlich geprüften Bergführer - Alle erforderlichen Reservierungen werden vorab gemacht - Leihausrüstung (10,-€ pro Ausrüstungsgegenstand/Tag)

- Transfer vom und zum Treffpunkt - Hüttenübernachtung mit HP auf der Kasselerhütte (ca. 60,- €) - Spesen (Übernachtung) für den Bergführer - Individuelle Trinkgelder

1. Tag: Hüttenzustieg Kasseler Hütte Wir treffen uns am frühen Morgen an der Jausenstation Säge in Rein in Taufers. Von der Jausenstation Säge steigen wir bis zur Kasseler Hütte auf (ca. 2 Stunden). Der Weg zur Hütte ist ohne technische Schwierigkeiten zu erreichen. 2. Tag: Hochgall Nordwestgrat Am zweiten Tag folgen wir dem Steig Nr. 8 zunächst flach und sogar leicht absteigend, bis eine Abzweigung in Richtung Hochgall weißt. Den Steigspuren und Steinmännchen folgend erreichen wir bald den Einstieg am Grauen Nöckl. Die Kletterei über den Nordwestgrat ist abwechslungsreich und spannend. Die Zeit vergeht bei dieser Genusskletterei wie im Flug bis wir schließlich auf dem Gipfel des 3.436 Meter hohen Hochgall stehen. Wir gönnen uns eine ausgiebige Gipfelrast und bestaunen das gewaltige Panorama, welches man vom Gipfel aus hat. Der anschließende Abstieg erfolgt entlang der Aufstiegsroute und später über die Kasseler Hütte wieder zurück ins Tal. Info: Die Tour ist für sehr konditionsstarke und geübte Bergsteiger auch an einem Tag zu bewältigen. Sollte jedoch nicht unterschätzt werden: Es sind 1.900 Höhenmeter in teils weglosem Gelände und kletternd auf dem Grat zu bewältigen. Auf Wunsch kann ich dir dafür gerne ein entsprechendes Angebot schicken.

  Die Geschichte der Erstbesteigung ​

Ein erster Versuch der Erstbesteigung erfolgte bereits 1854 durch den Vermessungsleutnant Hermann von Acken und einigen Defregger Messgehilfen über den Nordwestgrat. Allerdings wurde dabei nur ein Felskopf im Gipfelkamm östlich der Gipfelscharte erreicht, nur wenig unterhalb des Gipfels. Wirklich den höchsten Punkt erreichten am 03. August 1868 Karl Hofmann und Valentin Kaltdorff mit ihren Reiner Bergführern Georg Wels und Hansl Oberarzbacher über die Westflanke und den Nordwestgrat. Ihre Route ist auch heute noch der Normalweg um auf den Gipfel des Hochgall zu steigen.

Today we drove again a few kilometers by car to Antholz.

Parking and launch site was at the Sporthotel Wildgall, which is relatively short of the biathlon arena Antholz.

On beautiful, flat paths, we first went to the arena and then on to Lake Antholz.

Between San Candido, Dobbiaco and Brunico, on the Val Pusteria road in Trentino - Alto Adige, there is a valley named Anterselva, home of a sport called Biathlon. The structure is located here, in Anterselva di Sopra, surrounded by Dolomites, in the heart of the Vedrette Ries-Aurina Nature Park, a stone's throw from the wonderful Anterselva lake and a few meters from the Alto Adige Biathlon Arena. It enjoys the best, highest and sunniest position of the whole valley.

The structure is about 1.2 km from the ski facilities.
