The Haunting
Cooperstown Candlelight Ghost Tours offers year-round, one-hour walking tours of the village that combine the true, documented ghost stories of Cooperstown with the village's rich and vibrant history. Originally founded in 1786 by William Cooper, Cooperstown is a small town bordering Lake Otsego that is filled with numerous ghost stories, both old and recent. The tour includes stops at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and the Christ Church Graveyard, which is said to be haunted each midnight by the ghosts of the Cooper family slaves and servants. Then comes River Street, the most ghostly street in the village, which features a trio of haunted houses: Byberry Cottage, Greencrest, and Pomeroy Place. Each of these distinctive houses was once owned by the Cooper family, and each is said to remain haunted to this day.
The tour culminates with a stop at the southern edge of Lake Otsego, where we discuss the history of Hyde Hall, a 200-year-old building that is haunted by the ghosts of the British Clarke family.

Take A Candlelit Ghost Tour Through The Haunted Village Of Cooperstown

The Cooperstown Candlelight Ghost Tour will enlighten your senses with true ghost stories of Cooperstown as well as the haunted history, and it's just 60 minutes from Utica and Rome.
The Cooperstown Candlelight Ghost Tour takes you to six of Cooperstown's most haunted locations, including The Baseball Hall of Fame, The Christ Episcopal Church graveyard, Byberry Cottage on River Street, the Greencrest house on River Street, Pomeroy Place on River Street and Lake Otsego (once dubbed The Haunted Lake).
Owner of the Cooperstown Candlelight Ghost Tours, Bruse Markusen, tells us his tours combine true ghost stories of Cooperstown along with the actual history of the village.
We discuss William Cooper (the village founder); his famous son, author James Fenimore Cooper; and other key members of the Cooper and Pomeroy families. The ghost stories include stories of Cooper family slaves, acts of levitation, a haunting portrait, and a curse that has been placed on Hyde Hall (located on the northeastern shore of Lake Otsego).
Markusen tells us there are a couple of changes this year due to COVID-19. First, facemasks are required as Cooperstown has a facemask ordinance where people must wear masks on Main Street between Fair and Pine Boulevard, Pioneer between Lake and Church, or face a fine up to $1,000. Also, the tours are smaller with a maximum of 15 people, unlike prior years, when they would accommodate 30 to 40 people at a time.
Tours are available every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 7 pm through Halloween or by appointment. Call 607-547-8070 to RSVP.

Greencrest is a Victorian house often compared to Norman Bates’ house in the 1961 Hitchcock film, Psycho. It's said to be haunted by the ghost of Jenny Cooper Worthington, a niece of James Fenimore Cooper and an angry Native American ghost.
This is The Christ Episcopal Church graveyard. You can see the burial tomb of James Fenimore Cooper on the left side of the photo, on the left of the footpath. It's said a ghost toppled a gravestone onto a young girl's legs at this location.
Above is the Byberry Cottage, an enormous mansion on River Street in Cooperstown, and rumors state that the Cooper family's ghosts haunt it.

Baseball Spooks
Wander the Hall of Plaques at the National Baseball Hall of Fame , where the restless spirits of baseball greats have almost certainly taken up residence. Visitors have heard voices coming from the walls, and in 2010, the reality show Ghost Hunters came to strike up a conversation with the ghost of renowned Boston Red Sox outfielder Ted Williams. Haunted Mansion
Light a candle and tiptoe through haunted Hyde Hall , a neoclassical mansion and the site of many a paranormal encounter: the mansion boasts secret tunnels, the piano in the drawing room plays endlessly, and a woman in white has been seen haunting the nursery. An excellent way to learn more about Cooperstown and the ghost stories. Bruce was a wonderful guide.
We booked this tour for our first night in Cooperstown which was perfect. We had a guided tour of downtown that included the history of the area, ghost stories and even a visit to the cemetery. Walking around the downtown area gave us a sense of the families that influenced this area. Bruce, the tour guide pointed out sites we would have never noticed. He was very knowledgeable and was an excellent story teller. Highly recommend.
Found this looking for things to do on a Sunday off season. Perfect idea for October. About hour and half , super informative, and wonderful evening. Learned a lot, not a big walk, and the stories are well researched and documented. Well worth the value
We really enjoyed the ghost tour. It was a great mix of history and creepy ghost stories of the town. I will admit, there were a few times I felt a chill hearing about some of these stories!
I emailed from the road to Cooperstown and secured reservations for an 8pm tour. My husband, 18 year-old daughter and I were treated to private ghost tour of Cooperstown! Thom was our guide. He was very nice and so interesting! The tour is a lovely walk through town. We went through parks, churchyards, a cemetery, and got to see the beautiful homes of the area! So rich in history and hauntings! The tour concluded at Otsego Lake (Glimmerglass). Just gorgeous at sunset! What a lovely evening! Thank you Thom!
We took this tour on a cool February day and had a great time. The tour is normally at night, but as we were there during the Cooperstown Winter Festival, the tour was available during the afternoon. Our guide was outstanding. He's an excellent storyteller and whether or not there are haunted buildings in town, the stories and lore about them are great fun. The tour lasted about an hour and it was an hour well spent. We can easily imagine how the tour would be even more fun after dark! RECOMMENDED.
