You can stay in or spend the day outdoors, dipping your toes into the pristine, clear waters and cycling around the island. Animal lovers, get up close to the cats inhabiting the island. P.S. 2. Joyo Island

Some old Chinese shops and even houses remain! Alternatively, book a stay at Koh Tao (also known as ‘Turtle Island’), which boasts the clearest waters teeming with marine life. We don’t use the term “slice of paradise” very often, but that’s exactly what Rawa is. Popular with families, the coral island boasts powdery white shores and turquoise waters. Only two resorts are found here for maximum privacy. Both properties are made up of rustic wooden chalets on stilts and boast unobstructed sea views. The only thing on your to-do list? Beach and water sports: think everything from seaside volleyball to stand-up paddleboarding. SISTERS' ISLANDS

N amed for a legend that two sisters were blown away by a storm and each landed on one of the islands, these two getways have plenty of scenic beaches. Snorkelling is a favorite pastime here—the surrounding waters hold some of the richest reefs around, with both hard and soft corals.

CONEY ISLAND

This island attraction boasts a colorful ecosystem comprising 80 species of birds like the nationally critically endangered spotted wood owl and the black-crowned night heron as well as rare plants previously thought to be nationally extinct. There are boardwalks taking visitors through the island’s forest and mangrove habitats leading to the beach. Sign up for a guided tour, which takes you through the 600 sq meter Haw Par Beach Villa, designed by Singaporean architect Ho Kwong Yew in the 1930s and built by the Haw Par brothers of Tiger Balm ointment fame.

How to get there: Walk about 500 meters east along the Punggol Promenade Nature Walk to the Coney Island West Entrance.

This lush sanctuary offers nature lovers plenty of wild green spaces and biking trails. PULAU HANTU

This southern island is especially popular with divers and snorkelling enthusiasts—it boasts sheltered beaches, lagoons that are safe for swimming and an attractive variety of corals, home to marine creatures like clownfish, damselfish, wrasses and seahorses. The island is also favored by campers and day-trippers for its pristine environment.

How to get there: You’ll have to charter a boat from the private operators at West Coast Pier (60 West Coast Ferry Rd., S(126979)). Do note that you will have to apply for a permit from Sentosa Leisure Group if you want to camp overnight.

PULAU SEMAKAU

Another island south of Singapore, this one is best known for being the site of Semakau Landfill, which occupies the eastern part of the island. The landfill (filled with ash from incinerated waste) is engineered so the island remains clean, unpolluted and odor-free. In recent years it has turned into a real eco-getaway with flourishing mangrove habitats and a healthy coral population.

KUSU ISLAND

Kusu Island is the easternmost of the southern islands, and is most strongly associated with local myth and folklore. Devotees flock here during the ninth month of the lunar calendar to pay their respects at the Chinese temple, which is a shrine for the deity Tua Pek Kong. Besides its religious associations, the island is also known for its scenic lagoons, clean beaches and biodiversity. Do note, however, that camping is not allowed there.

ST JOHN'S ISLAND

Located 6.5km south of Singapore, this island used to be a quarantine station for Chinese immigrants suffering from cholera. Note that there are no stores, eateries, or water coolers on St. John’s island, so you’ll need to bring your own food and drinks, including enough drinking water to last you the day!

What to do there: Lo and behold, this beach is yours. Lazarus island is known for its tranquility and its clear blue waters. Find a comfortable spot, lay down your picnic mats and enjoy the calmness.

There are no stores, eateries or water coolers on Lazarus island, so do pack your own food and drinks, including enough drinking water to last you the day.

6. Kusu Island

What to do there: Visit the Da Bo Gong Temple if you are a devotee. Picnic or swim in one of their beaches and lagoons. Kusu island is known as the tortoise island, hence be sure to spot loads of tortoise figures around the island.

Do note that Kusu island does not have retail and F&B shops on the island. Hence, do prepare your food and drinks, including plain drinking water, beforehand!

Spending 24/7 in the thick of Singapore city life can take a toll. If planning a long trip sounds too tedious to you, then good news – we don't have to get on a plane for a quick respite because our island is itself surrounded by islands that offer a slower pace of life. 

Hop on a boat to these offshore destinations and breathe in the fresh air. Set up camp – or a picnic mat if you don't intend to stay the night – and relive those kampong days. These uninhabited islands are ripe for exploration, just don't forget to slather on the mozzie repellant and sunscreen.

Pulau Hantu

For divers and marine life enthusiasts

Pulau Hantu is made up of two islets, Hantu Besar and Hantu Kecil. The word 'hantu' is the Malay word for ghost and it was probably named after stories of ancient Malay warriors who duelled to the death on the island – and that their ghosts still wander the island. 

These days, the peaceful island is a great spot for divers and those who want to observe marine life up close. There are swimming lagoons, white sands, intertidal pools, mangroves, and plenty of reefs teeming with life underwater. 

How to get there While admission to the island is free, there are no regular ferries to Pulau Hantu. You can charter a boat from West Coast Pier to take you there. Rates will have to be negotiated with the operator which depends on their availability. and diesel prices among others. Alternatively, look out for group tours and treks to the island where you can follow nature enthusiasts as they study and observe marine life on the island. 

St John's Island

For cat lovers Forget cat cafés – St John’s Island is the go-to for friendly felines, with one sleuthing around almost all the landmarks that dot the island. Step off the boat and you’re greeted by a cat. Head to the picnic area, there’s another. Stroll around the cluster of trees and you’ll find even more. But the holy grail of kitties on the island is the quiet mosque, with dozens of them lazing around, stretching and doing other strange cat things.

St John’s Island wasn’t always a cat paradise. In the '30s, it was the world’s largest quarantine centre. Before Singapore’s independence, it was a holding centre for political detainees. Later on, it became a rehabilitation centre for opium addicts. Only in 1975 was it redeveloped as a staycation spot away from the mainland.

Other than cat-watching (not that you need to do anything else), you can take a dip in the ocean, grill up a barbecue in the picnic area or visit the Sisters' Islands Marine Park Public Gallery to check out Singapore’s efforts in preserving our marine biodiversity. Don’t want to leave the island just yet? The only way to stay overnight on St John’s is to book one of the holiday dormitories or the lone bungalow – camping is strictly not allowed.

How to get there Marina South Pier. Tickets start from $15 for a trip to the island. Take note: during the ninth lunar month, ferry services to St John’s will halt for the Kusu pilgrimage.

Kusu Island

For heritage-rich getaways The best time to visit Kusu is in October, the ninth lunar month. That’s when pilgrims flock to the Da Bo Gong temple to pray and throw coins at the bells around the wishing well (presumably for good fortune, and you can toss a few yourself, too). The deity, also known as Tua Pek Kong, is claimed to have transformed a tortoise into this very island, hence its religious significance. Stalls selling charms and other religious trinkets also set up during the pilgrimage, and it’s the only time food is available on the island. 

Besides the temple, there’s a tortoise sanctuary and, if you can manage the 152-step climb up the hill smack in the middle of Kusu, three Malay  keramats  (which broadly refer to tombs of Islamic ‘saints’) that many believe to grant wealth, health and fertility.

Pulau Semakau

• Western Islands

Ever wondered where the waste from our city winds up? Well, the answer’s right here. And yes, you can tour this landfill without the need to pinch your nose – Semakau is surprisingly serene, clean and teeming with wildlife.

The only way to get to the island is with a permit from the National Environment Agency (NEA). Don’t worry, though. Applying for one isn’t tough. You’ll first need to book one of two tours: the landfill tour, run by the NEA, or the intertidal walk, organised by nature societies such as The Nature Workshop. Once you’ve done that, get in touch with the NEA for a permit at least three weeks in advance. You’ll also need to fork out up to $400 (not a typo) for the boat ride there.

The half-day landfill tour takes you around Semakau’s operations and facilities to show you how waste in Singapore is managed. If you’re looking for a more natural experience, embark on the intertidal walk instead. On it, you’ll discover more about Semakau’s diverse marine life, whose residents include crabs, shrimp and colonies of knobby sea stars.

How to get there West Coast Pier, Marina South Pier or Pasir Panjang Ferry Terminal. Visits to the Semakau Landfill or one of the waste-to-energy plants can be arranged by sending a   request  to the National Environment Agency.

For discovering nature Take a walk on the wild side as you step foot on one of Singapore’s last surviving kampongs. At a sprawling 1,020 hectares, Ubin boasts lush greenery and abundant wildlife, drawing nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts to explore the many wonders of the granite island. Whip out your binoculars to spot birds at Pekan Quarry, wander through nature trails, and hike 75 metres up Puaka Hill for a breathtaking panoramic view of the islet. 

Whisk yourself to the southeastern end of Ubin for the islet’s main attraction: Chek Jawa. The wetlands and its rich ecosystem are best seen during low tide – stroll down the kilometre-long boardwalk and keep your eyes peeled for colourful sea critters such as the peacock anemone and biscuit sea star. If you’d like to add some adrenaline rush to the trip, sign up for the island’s kayak tours ($95/person for full day) and paddle through the mangroves. You might just be able to have a close encounter with jellyfish, kingfishers and (if you’re lucky) otters.

Lazarus Island

For pure shores Far away from the thronging East Coast Park and manicured Sentosa beaches lies a swathe of white sand and clear, turquoise waters. No, we’re not talking about Boracay but Lazarus Island. One of Singapore’s best-kept secrets is its serene, undeveloped beach that you can (almost) call your own – just take the first ferry out at 9am on weekends and 10am on weekdays to claim the sands for yourself. Other beach bums descend around lunchtime with their yachts and speedboats. And don’t forget to pack everything you need – floats, mats, towels – as there are no shops on Lazarus.

Pro tip: for Insta-worthy shots, trek further inland to the reclaimed Pulau Seringat, north of Lazarus. You’ll come across a jetty – continue past it until you spot a pavilion. From that vantage point, you’ll be able to snap a panorama of the Singapore mainland. How to get there Take the ferry to St John’s from Marina South Pier (tickets start from $15). Best Islands Near Singapore For Families

I started searching for the Best Islands near Singapore as soon as our flights were booked.  Sure I wanted to visit the highlights of Singapore with Kids like the Gardens by the Bay , but I also wanted a tropical beach escape as well.

In fact, if you combine the city with the island resorts near Singapore you have a nearly PERFECT family holiday destination in our opinion.  That is, we love visiting Singapore.  However, we think that combining a short getaway from Singapore for the family to an island is how to get the best of both worlds.  You will find plenty of posts out there that talk about island getaways from Singapore but many listed can only be reached by plane.  We haven’t done that.  All of the islands around Singapore that we recommend can be reached without taking a flight.

I’ve asked other family travel bloggers to help me out with this wonderful roundup of beach resorts near Singapore that include both islands off Singapore,  and also Malaysian resorts near Singapore.

Best time of the year to visit islands near singapore.

Singapore, and the islands near Singapore, are located in a warm, tropical climate.  Many tourists flock to Singapore and the surrounding islands year-round as there really is no “bad” time to visit.  Located close to the equator, there is not a typical “wet” or “dry” season.  The temperature does not fluctuate widely between months, nor does the chances of rain.  However, there are times that are more popular than others to visit Singapore and the surrounding islands.

Since the weather doesn’t sway much from month to month, the top consideration of the best time of the year to visit the island resorts near Singapore would be cost and tourism levels.  Typically, the “peak” holiday period would be between December and June.  This would be the time that people in the Northern Hemisphere are looking to escape the winter blues and also when most major holidays fall.

If cost is a consideration and/or you prefer to visit during a quieter time, avoid the holiday period from December to early February.  This time period would coincide with Christmas, New Year, and the Chinese Lunar New Year (which is a popular celebration).

Geography and Practical Considerations

Singapore is located in South East Asia.  While technically its own island nation, Singapore is geographically located on the southern-most tip of Malaysia.  Most of the best beach resorts near Singapore will be located south of Singapore across the Singapore Strait in the South China Sea.  Though a few, like Sentosa Island, that is located quite near to downtown Singapore.

Be mindful that some of our suggestions are located in Malaysia and others in Indonesia.  Make sure you check passport and visa requirements for entry and exit to each country and island.  The last thing you want is to be excited about your islands getaway from Singapore only to run into a snafu with your passport or visa.  When in doubt ask.  If you are staying in one of the beach resorts near Singapore check with them.  Often times they can give you very practical information about entry requirements and travel logistics.

For Malaysia, the vast majority of citizens (apart from 35 smaller countries) are able to receive a tourist visa on arrival, and this includes Singapore, Australia, and the USA.  

For travel to Bintan and Bantam Islands,  Indonesia offers special Short-Stay Visa-Free facilities to nationalities of up to 169 countries for up to 30 days.  This is perfect for a short Singapore Island getaway.  The good news is that these 169 countries include Singapore,  Australia, New Zealand the United States. 

H aving recently traveled by road from Singapore to Malaysia the process was very straightforward.  As we were traveling with two children and an infant we opted for private transport.  Our driver checked our passports when we got in at the hotel and before we headed off to the border.  There were small lines at the border, but when our turn came the immigration official checked each one of us, and we held the baby for him to see.  It was the same process coming back, very easy. 

When we traveled to Bintan Island the process was very similar – on purchasing our ferry tickets the person checked our passports had the correct validity.  Once arriving on Bintan the immigration process was very fast, as there were not a lot of people on the ferry at the time.

Which Are The Best Islands Near Singapore For Families

Palau Besar, Malaysia

Tioman Island, Malaysia

If you are looking for a great island destination near Singapore then consider Tioman Island!

Located off the east coast of Malaysia, it’s a 3.5-hour bus trip to Mersing or a shorter car ride.  From Mersing, you can take a ferry across to Tioman Island. The ferry ride takes about 1.5 – 2 hours depending on where you are getting off on the island.

Tioman Island itself is relatively big and there is a choice of resorts and locations. I  stayed just south of the main town, Tekek, at the Berjaya Tioman Resort with my 7-year-old son. This is a handy location if you want to explore more of the island as there are only a couple of roads on Tioman and the Berjaya is on one of them. Otherwise, you can only get other places via sea taxis which are expensive.

Berjaya Tioman Island is perfect for families. It’s on a great beach, it has multiple pools, restaurants, a games room, a playground, and more.  There is a variety of room types including two-bedroom chalets.

The Berjaya is on the pricey side but there is a range of accommodation on Tioman for all budgets. You can see some top choices here .

My son loved hanging out at the resort as well as exploring the rest of the island.  There is a walkway between Tekek and ABC Beach which he particularly enjoyed as it’s over the water and it’s easy to spot fish.  Perfect for kids who are too young or don’t want to snorkel. He also loved the car ride over the Juara beach. This goes up and down a very mountainous road and is like being on a roller coaster!

Bintan Island, Indonesia

The family-friendly Indonesian island of Bintan Island is around an hour south of Singapore by ferry.

There are many family-friendly hotels on the island including a Club Med.  Most are close to the ferry terminal.  We found a great deal at The Residence Bintan (90-minute shuttle bus away).

The hotel is an amazing, laid back but high-quality resort.  The rooms are in small buildings (no tower blocks!) and feel really secluded.  The rooms and communal areas are all gorgeous. There’s an enormous pool, which our kids (aged seven and five) loved, as well as a water sports center where you can do everything from borrowing kayaks to going diving (extra charge).  The beach has tiny waves so perfect for little travelers and there are even hammocks and a swing not far from the shore.  The kids club was well organized with great activities meaning we could take advantage of the spa which was fabulous!

A 4-night stay in March starts at SGD 131 ($95 USD) for a family of 4 including a 22% discount for staying a long stay.  Booking.com often has good deals too.  Disappointingly, prices for food and drink were more like Singaporean prices than Indonesian.  Consequently, we spent much more than we expected to.

Logistics – regular departures from Changi Ferry Terminal.  It’s an international destination so you need passports.

Bawah Reserve, Indonesia

Bawah Reserve is a gorgeous island in Indonesia’s Anambas Archipelago that promises a rustic-chic getaway where shoes are optional.  This island is breathtaking and from the moment your seaplane circles the island until you leave, you are spellbound by its beauty.  The food is some of the best in Indonesia.  There are even cooking classes available which could be fun for the little ones.  There are water-based activities galore from fishing and snorkeling to kayaking and SUPing.  Go on a  smaller walk through the lush jungle or longer hikes for older children. The picnics on the deserted beaches are just fabulous.  As for the staff, they are exceptional and work as a single unit.  With no reception, you can ask anything from anyone, and they will oblige.

Getting to Bawah from Singapore is a hassle-free experience.  Yet it does take some time and a few modes of transportation.  First, you’re picked up in Singapore by a Mercedes taxi at around 7 am. You’re then taken to Tanah Merah ferry terminal and escorted to Batam where Bawah will handle all your procedures for Indonesia immigration.  You’ll take breakfast at a reserved table at Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and board the 10-seater amphibious plane owned by the resort.  The flight is one hour and fifteen minutes of scenic beauty.  You’ll land smoothly at Bawah’s pier and be greeted by the entire staff and a buggy.

Prices at Bawah Island will differ depending on how many kids you have in tow as prices include transfers from Singapore, all meals and non-alcoholic drinks as well as all activities and unlimited use of the spa.  The 70sqm Garden Suite is the entry-level room, starting from $1800 ($1295 USD) for 2 adults and 1 child.  The 105sqm Overwater Bungalow (with aircon) starts at $2520 ($1813 USD).

Pulau Rawa, Malaysia

Pulau Rawa is a tiny coral island just off the coast of Mersing, Malaysia . It takes around three hours to get to Mersing from Singapore by bus or car, and then it’s an hour on the boat to Rawa from Mersing Jetty.  Once you’re there it’s well worth the trip, as Rawa is a stunning secluded island with white sand and clear water, perfect for relaxing, swinging in hammocks under palm trees, and snorkeling off the beach.

Kids love the freedom and the waterslide from the jetty into the ocean at Rawa Island Resort, climbing to the top of the island, spotting peacocks, and playing on the beach.  We stay at Alangs which has gorgeous white bungalows and A-frames on the beach and is more rustic than its resort neighbor. Weekends here are for adults only but the weekdays are a family paradise. Both Alangs Rawa and Alangs Island Resort offer packages including full board and prices vary depending on the time of year and accommodation you choose. The food is delicious and is eaten in an open-air restaurant overlooking the beach. There are lots of beach toys for the kids, as well as darts for adults and volleyball on the beach. We love Rawa Island and hope you will too.

Pulau Sibu, Malaysia

With rustic family bungalows, the Sea Gypsy Resort on Pulau Sibu is a place that your family can go and seriously unplug, connect with nature – and with each other.  All their thatched bungalows have beach views and within a few seconds, you are on the beach! What could be more blissful?

All agree that the Sea Gypsy Resort has a special vibe and that they connected with other like-minded people.  Also, kids are just happy to play in the ocean and take part in their kid’s club.

The resort is full-board only.  Reviews are glowing about the restaurant, and its attention to detail, including catering for children that are picky eaters.

The Sea Gypsy is not a luxurious resort – there is no Aircon and the showers are cold.  There is No Wifi and mobile coverage is spotty.  The absence of these things helps you focus on what matters in life.

If you are planning a short getaway from Singapore for the family to unwind and connect, this is a great place.  In our last quote, we were looking at $490/Au a night for a family of 2 A and 2 C  or $122 per adult which makes it a good deal considering all meals, ferry transfers, and transport are included.

Sea Gypsy resort is based on the island of Pulau Sibu and conveniently offers a daily transfer from Somerset MRT in Singapore to the port at Tanjong Leman,  an easy 2.5-hour transfer including a stop at the Malay border.   If you are looking for rustic Malay style cottages and a laid back dive resort the Sea Gypsy is for you.

Batam Island, Indonesia

Batam Island is the closest Indonesia island near Singapore, just a 30-minute ferry ride away.  As such it is also extremely popular with Singaporeans looking for a weekend getaway.   If you are like us,  you will immediately ask – which of the islands off Singapore are best?  Bintan Island vs Batam Island.

In a nutshell, Batam Island offers a more local flavor with lower-priced – less luxurious resorts catering to a Singaporean market. If shopping malls are your thing, then you’d definitely prefer Batam!  Plus in general, Batam is considered much livelier with more to do!

Bintan has some fabulous resorts – but you will be paying more for this luxury.  On the other hand for those looking for a value for money island resorts near Singapore then Batam might be more your thing.   KTM Resort gets good reviews for families and is only around the $100 SGD ($72 USD) night mark, while the extremely fun looking Harris Resort Waterfront is around the $150 SGD ($108 USD) mark.

Note, these prices don’t include meals or ferry transfers per person (about $35 SG or $25 USD), so when comparing with the Malaysian beach resorts you would need to take that into account.

Tanjung Balai Karimun, Indonesia

Fancy a dose of Vitamin Sea but don’t want to venture too far away from Singapore? Luckily, the Little Red Dot is just a stone’s throw away from some of the world’s best islands, where you’ll find crystal clear waters, luxe resorts and plenty of holiday activities to keep the kids busy. Check out this list of nearby islands for your dream getaway, the next time the urge to retreat from civilisation hits:

1. Lazarus Island

If day-tripping is totally up your alley, then make a stop over the weekend at Lazarus Island. It’s one of Singapore’s southern islands and has gorgeous white sand beaches, calm waters and minimal crowding. Pack a picnic and your swimwear for an afternoon by the blue waters. The beach is also perfect for a dose of water sports and games like kite-flying, beach volleyball, snorkelling and more. And if you’re a cat lover, pack a few kitty treats too, as the island is home to many furry felines who love a scratch behind the ears.

Getting here is easy enough – hop on a ferry from either Sentosa Cove or Marina South Pier to Lazarus Seringat Jetty with the express Marina South Ferries , or take a ferry to St John’s Island and use the walking causeway between the two isles to get to Lazarus Island.

Lazarus Island is uninhabited, but as of April 2023, you can rent one of the tiny homes, also known as Tiny Away Escape @ Lazarus Island . These extremely compact, trailer-like homes are perfect if you’d like a weekend of off-the-grid living. These little homes are air-conditioned and include a mini kitchen, a bed for two adults and a sofa bed for little ones, as well as biodegradable shampoo and body wash.

Tiny Away Escape @ Lazarus Island is completely eco-friendly; it uses solar energy as its main power source, is made using recycled plastics and wood fibre, is durable and even has a high-tech recycling system that composts food waste in 24 hours.

2. Cempedak Private Island

If an adults-only paradise is that you’re after, check out the luxurious bamboo villas and lush greenery of Cempedak Private Island , 9km off the east coast of Bintan, Indonesia. From Singapore, jump on a Bintan-bound ferry from Tanah Merah ferry terminal, traverse the island for about an hour by car, then transfer to a private speedboat. The journey takes about three hours, but it’s well worth it for the five-star hospitality, stylish eco-living and delicious all-you-can-eat meals.

Spread over 17 hectares, the resort is home to an array of wildlife such as otters, hornbills, monitor lizards and pangolins; a small but dedicated and friendly staff; and, thankfully, not much else.

Its bamboo architecture is the star of the show – New Zealand-born architect Miles Humphreys, together with Balinese architects Chiko Wirahadi and Ketut Indra Saputra, both experts in bamboo, built the villas using this sustainable “super material”, along with recycled teak and rubber wood and cogon grass for the roofs.

The villas are available either on the beachfront or perched atop jungle-festooned ridges with stunning views of the sea. Shaped like curvaceous conch shells, the two-storey, open-air villas boast luxe features such as stone ensuite bathrooms, private infinity pools, organic cotton sheets and speaker systems. And while they’re completely wall-less and without air conditioning, the spacious 150m² floor plans are a true study in smart design – natural ventilation works a treat, and the sea breeze flows throughout the villas.

Meals are mostly enjoyed at the resort’s airy hilltop restaurant (private picnics can also be arranged), which comes with 180-degree views and private dining pods. The menu changes daily and spotlights the region’s rich local produce – think barbecued seafood sourced from local markets and organic veggies grown in the resort’s garden – while also putting a modern spin on Indonesian flavours. Have a nightcap at the bar, which has a fine collection of aged rums and top-notch craft cocktails.

Don’t miss their spa treatment, and for a real treat, request for the staff to arrange it to coincide with sunset. The treatment rooms overlook the sea, and the experience of being pampered against the sound of waves is unbeatable. If you’re feeling adventurous, there’s a hidden path from the spa that takes you to the water’s edge. There, you can lay on the flat rocks and soak in the sun at your leisure. What heaven.

3. Rawa Island

For a slightly more modest, yet equally secluded island getaway, look to Rawa Island in Malaysia. This coral island in Johor’s Mersing district is relatively small and only has two resorts. Getting here begins with a bus or car journey from Singapore to Mersing, before you hop on a speedboat to your chosen resort.

At Alang’s Rawa , weekdays pass blissfully, as the peaceful oasis is filled with families looking for a break from the big city within one of six different types of accommodations. The restaurant here is known for its simple but delicious nosh, and come nightfall, you’ll find beachside tables lit by flaming lanterns to accompany the menu.

However, note that children under age 16 aren’t allowed on weekends, as Alang’s Rawa transforms into party central, with Saturday night barbecues, exciting nightlife and a to-die-for cocktail list made with fresh local fruits, juices and spices.

Rawa Island Resort is the place to be if you’re in the mood for water sports such as snorkelling, kayaking, scuba diving and even island hopping. There are four chalet and bungalows to choose from, and the room packages include three meals daily with sea transfer to and from Mersing.

Want to really treat yourself to stellar views of Rawa Island? Take a leisurely hike to the top of the island to see the surrounding islands and the South China Sea. Unwind with a massage afterwards, or enjoy a spa treatment that makes use of fresh local ingredients.

4. Pulau Ubin

This boomerang-shaped Singapore island escape is situated off the northeast coast of Singapore, just $4 (add $2 if you’re bringing your own bicycle) for a 15-minute bumboat ride from the mainland. The jumping-off point from  Pulau Ubin is Changi Ferry Point Terminal – there’s an excellent hawker centre around the area, dishing up some of the country’s best nasi lemak (coconut rice with condiments), leafy cafés and other great eateries . There are no set times for bumboat departures, as these only set off when there are 12 passengers for the journey (if you don’t want to wait for other passengers to make up the numbers, simply cough up the difference.)

Setting foot on Ubin is like stepping inside a time warp, back to when skyscrapers and expressways were non-existent in the country. Some of the island’s earliest inhabitants were the seafaring Orang Laut people and indigenous Malays of Javanese descent, though Ubin was later settled by Chinese families and Malay fishing communities.

Walking tracks and cycling trails lace around the island – you’ll cover more terrain on the latter. Bikes can be rented near the end of the arrival pier for around $10 a day, and you’ll be able to enjoy more of Ubin’s rustic, charming villages, shrines, thick jungle and pretty lakes created from old granite mining sites.

On the eastern end of the island, you’ll find the Chek Jawa wetlands , home to a plethora of wildlife including kingfishers, snakes, fish, wild boars, otters and plenty of marine creatures. A boardwalk juts over the mangroves, letting visitors see the marine life up close.

There aren’t any resorts, hotels or lodges if you’d like to spend the night. Instead, pack your own camping gear for a night under the stars within the allocated camping grounds – just watch out for the wild boars and keep your food stowed away safely before turning in for the evening.

This large, 1,173km 2 island (almost double the size of Singapore) may be part of Indonesia’s Riau archipelago, but the Lion City is regarded as its easiest access point – just an hour-long high-speed ferry ride away from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal.

While Bintan is a popular Singapore island escape for a weekend, most visitors don’t venture outside of Lagoi, where the sprawling Bintan Resorts property is located. It spans sweeping golf courses, family-friendly beach resorts and manicured luxury villas.

But there’s plenty to explore further afield – the southeastern coast has gained a reputation as a first-rate dive destination, particularly for beginner divers, with its good visibility, shallow 10 to 15-metre reefs and an array of hard corals and marine life such as moray eels, cuttlefish and pufferfish.

However, if you’re looking to take it easy, there are high-end resorts where rest and relaxation are elevated to art forms. Back in Lagoi, The Sanchaya – a luscious, 10-hectare beachfront estate built on a former coconut plantation – dials up the luxury several notches, boasting a gorgeous stretch of powder-white sand and even its own VIP lounge at the ferry terminal.

The 29 villas and suites are all elegantly furnished – some are colonial-inspired with teak floors and marble bathroom fittings, and others feature Thai-style pitched roofs and Khmer antiques – and come with Bang & Olufsen televisions and sound systems, wine fridges and iPads. The pièce de résistance, however, is the 50-metre infinity pool – perfect for relaxing in before feasting on The Sanchaya’s excellent menus.

6. Pulau Tengah

This privately owned island in Johor, Malaysia is a 20- to 30-minute boat ride from Mersing. Although small, you’ll find eight sandy beaches and some of the country’s clearest waters dotted with rock formations. There’s only one resort on the island – Batu Batu – and it’s built to resemble a small Malay village.

Guests are welcome to stay in any of the 22 villas, which are made from tropical hardwoods and blend into the uninhabited island’s rustic surroundings. The villages face either the sea or the jungle, guaranteeing privacy and a tranquil environment for couples or families.

Spacious bathrooms feature stonewashed bathtubs and showers, and guests can dine on European or Asian dishes at the restaurant and bar. With activities like snorkelling, stand-up paddleboarding, island trekking and diving on offer, there’s plenty of excitement here.

Batu Batu also runs several conservation initiatives, with its most popular one being the Tengah Island Conservation programme, which includes sea turtle conservation efforts.

7. Sugi Island

For a holiday that will truly take you off the grid and give you time away from your tech devices, head to remote Sugi Island , which, like Batam and Bintan, is part of Indonesia’s Riau archipelago. The two resorts on the island, Telunas Beach Resort and Telunas Private Island , are both free of Wi-Fi, air-conditioning and televisions – letting you truly focus on yourself while you’re there.

Getting here may seem like a hassle, requiring a ferry ride from Harbourfront Centre Ferry Terminal to Sekupang Ferry Terminal followed by another cruise on a local ferry to the resort. However, the total travelling time is no more than three hours from Singapore. Upon arrival, gracious hosts will direct you to your spacious villa, which comes with a panoramic view of the water.

These resorts encourage you to focus on yourself and nature, so offerings like spa treatments, water sports and visits to untapped natural sights are part and parcel of your stay. For meals, take your pick from either Western or local cuisine.

Initially a project started by like-minded eco-conscious friends in 2004, Telunas continues to be committed to sustainable practices, supporting the local community through a myriad of initiatives such as preserving endangered species and offering scholarships to residents of the neighbouring islands.

While its slightly seedy reputation might precede it, Batam is an island escape that’s just a 45-minute ferry ride away from Singapore. What many might not know is that it has a sophisticated side that prioritises luxurious relaxation as well as adventure and sports. The island is also the perfect starting point for further exploration of the Riau islands, especially for divers.

On Batam’s eastern side, you’ll find Montigo Resorts Nongsa – the gleaming white modern villas dot the coast and face the rolling waters of the South China Sea. To reach the resort, take a 10-minute shuttle bus ride upon disembarking at Nongsapura Ferry Terminal.

Since the resort is secluded from the main part of the island where the bulk of tourists congregate, a stay here guarantees peace and privacy with the option to reap nature’s benefits. From bike tours and mangrove cruises to batik painting, dirt track racing and much more, there are plenty of opportunities to explore the quieter side of the island.

If you’ve come for a respite from the stresses of everyday living, the spa offers tailored experiences where you can fully rejuvenate your mind and body. On the other hand, thrill-seekers can get their adrenaline pumping with some target practice – go old-school with a bow and arrow at the archery range, or try a state-of-the-art Airsoft gun that’ll have you racing across the resort’s grounds playing wargames.
