‘SIGN LADY’ APOLOGIZES FOR HER ‘STUPIDITY’

tour de france sign lady gif

An arrested cycling spectator who caused a mass pileup at the Tour de France has told investigators she feels ashamed of her “stupidity” and is worried about the huge public interest in her case, a prosecutor said on Thursday. The 30-year-old woman, who has not been named, was arrested on Wednesday, five days after the accident on Saturday that left dozens of cyclists nursing cuts and bruises and one with fractured hands.

Wearing a bright yellow coat, she was caught on camera during the first stage of the race in northwestern Britanny holding up a large cardboard sign with the words “Go! Grandpa and granny” in front of the cyclists. Riding on the outside of the tightly packed peloton, German cyclist Tony Martin was unable to avoid colliding with the sign and the ensuing pileup led to a five-minute delay as riders and bikes were untangled.

“The suspect has expressed her feelings of shame and fear about the consequences of her act,” local prosecutor Camille Miansoni told reporters at a press conference that was shown live by some French TV channels.

“She said she is worried about the media attention for what she has called her ‘stupidity’,” Miansoni added from the city of Brest.

The accident has sparked a debate about safety and spectator conduct at the Tour de France, where fans are allowed to line the roads, but has also inflamed passions and led to widespread abuse of the woman on social media.

Local police chief Nicolas Duvinage said that an appeal for witnesses posted on Facebook led to more than 4,000 messages, some of which “were verging on incitement to violence”.

“We need to stay reasonable and calm on social networks,” he told the press conference. “The suspect has some personal vulnerabilities and we need to avoid a lynching in the media or on social media.”

Prosecutor Miansoni explained that the woman had gone to watch the race with her partner as it passed several miles from their home in rural Britanny. The message on her sign — which she showed in the direction of television cameras, meaning her back was turned to the riders — was intended for her grandparents who were watching on TV at home like millions of other French people.

Miansoni added that she had no previous criminal record and a decision would be made shortly on whether to charge her with putting others in danger through negligence and causing unintentional bodily harm.

Earlier on Thurday, the organizer of the Tour de France race said it was withdrawing its legal complaint against her.

“The incident has been blown out of all proportion,” director Christian Prudhomme told AFP.

“So we’d like to calm things down now that the message has got across that the roadside fans need to be careful.” Martin, a six-time Tour de France stage winner, had earlier called for a severe punishment.

“Not only did she fail to stick around and help us get up from the floor, she didn’t present herself to the police or present her excuses,” the 36-year-old told German newspaper Bild.

Martin, who competes for Team Jumbo-Visma, is still in the Tour but Spain’s Marc Soler is one of the riders who had to leave after the crash in which he fractured both hands.

Soler told Spain’s La Vanguardia newspaper on Wednesday he intended to lodge an official complaint about the woman.

“People come to the race to mess around and at the end of the day they go home all right, but we cyclists pay for it with our bodies,” he said.

Police Arrest Tour de France Fan Who They Say Caused Crash

A cardboard sign stopped a speeding pack of cyclists on Saturday, sending dozens crashing to the pavement.

By Victor Mather

The police in France have arrested a woman who they say is the spectator who held up a sign and caused a serious crash at the Tour de France on Saturday.

Multiple news media outlets reported that the woman was in custody on Wednesday. The woman, 30, turned herself in, Colonel Nicolas Duvinage of the Landernau, France, police told France Bleu Finistère .

Video from the race on Saturday showed the woman leaning into the road while holding up a cardboard sign for the television cameras. Because she had her back to the approaching riders, she failed to realize how close the riders were to her position and did not pull the sign out of the way of the racers in time.

The German rider Tony Martin, who was near the front of the pack of cyclists, crashed into it with his handlebars and, losing his momentum and his balance, fell onto the road in front of the tightly packed field. That set off a cascade of collisions that led to several injuries; dozens of riders were involved in the crash.

“I saw the lady, I saw the sign, but there was no time to react,” Martin told reporters .

One rider involved in Saturday’s crash , Jasha Sütterlin, dropped out of the race . Martin was able to continue.

The crash happened during the first of the race’s 21 stages, in the municipality of St.-Cadou. The sign read, “Allez opi-omi!” — a mix of French and German that roughly translates as “Go, granddad-grandma.” The police said that the woman holding it, who was wearing glasses and a yellow jacket, left the scene before investigators arrived.

The specific details of how she was identified or arrested were unclear on Wednesday. The police in France did not respond to several requests for comment.

Pierre-Yves Thouault, the deputy director of cycling with the Amaury Sport Organization, which runs the Tour de France, had threatened to sue the fan . “We are doing this so that the tiny minority of people who do this don’t spoil the show for everyone,” he said.

But on Thursday the race’s director, Christian Prudhomme, told Agence France-Presse that race officials had withdrawn their legal complaint against the woman. “The incident has been blown out of all proportion,” Prudhomme said, according to A.F.P. “So we’d like to calm things down now that the message has got across that the roadside fans need to be careful.”

Since it takes place on public roads in France, the cycling race gives millions of spectators a chance for up-close views of the action year after year. But fans have often been overzealous in encroaching upon the race, and have at times interfered in the competition by running alongside the riders or blocking their path.

Fans posing for selfies with their backs to the field have become a particular issue in recent years, and race and team officials — and even riders — did little to hide their anger about Saturday’s crash.

There have been numerous incidents over the years in which competitors and fans have become entangled, though mass pileups caused by spectators like the one on Saturday have been less common.

On Instagram, Martin wrote: “To all the people next to the road who think that the Tour de France is a circus, to people who risk everything for a selfie with a 50 km/h fast peloton, to people who think it’s nice to show their naked butt, to drunken people who push us sideways on the climbs, to people who think that it is a good idea to hold a sign into the road while the peloton is passing. I want to ask this people forcefully: Please respect the riders and the Tour de France!”

“Fans, please stay off the roads,” tweeted Richard Plugge, the general manager of Martin’s team, Jumbo-Visma. “And if you want to pay attention to your opi and omi, visit them.”

Jacey Fortin and Aurelien Breeden contributed reporting.

Tour de France 2021 - Woman who caused huge Tour crash with sign-waving fined 1200 euros by French court

Alexander Netherton

Updated 09/12/2021 at 16:27 GMT

The 2021 Tour de France saw a huge crash on the first stage leaving from Brest. The cause of the incident, which led to several retirements and injuries, came due to a woman who was waving a sign too close to the peloton, causing a fall of a number of riders. The woman was fined 1,200 euros on Thursday.

Spectator arrested for allegedly causing massive Tour de France crash

Three riders withdrew from the race, according to the organizers.

PARIS -- After a four-day search, a woman was arrested Wednesday as part of the investigation into a large crash at the Tour de France earlier last week, according to local prosecutors.

The 30-year-old suspect turned herself into police and expressed feelings "of shame, of fear, in the face of the consequences of her act," public prosecutor Camille Miansoni said Thursday. She is "distressed by the media coverage of what she calls 'her blunder,'" added Miansoni.

Prosecutors said police would take measures "proportionate to the seriousness of the facts and to the personality of the author."

The woman is accused of causing a large crash by holding a sign in front of cyclists in the opening stage of the competition on Saturday. She had allegedly left the scene before authorities arrived. Her cardboard sign read "allez opi-omi," meaning "go grandma-grandpa" in German.

After the crash, three riders withdrew from the race due to their injuries, according to the Tour's organizers, including German cyclist Jasha Sütterlin of Team DSM.

"Following the crash, he was taken to hospital for examinations which revealed no broken bones, but a severe contusion to his right wrist that will require further examinations back at home," Team DSM said in a statement about Sütterlin, who admitted he was "so disappointed."

Tony Martin, a member of top Tour contender Primoz Roglic's Jumbo Visma squad, hit the woman on the right side of the road, causing a domino effect for riders inside the peloton.

The first fall was followed by another, which injured four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome.

Riders briefly halted the race on Tuesday to protest against the danger caused by spectators who were too close to the road.

"Following the crashes during the third stage of the Tour de France, the riders have been discussing how they wish to proceed to show their dissatisfaction with safety measures in place and demand their concerns are taken seriously," the riders' union, the Cyclistes Professionnels Associés, said in a statement. "Their frustration about foreseeable and preventable action is enormous."

The local chief of police Nicolas Duvinage on Thursday called for calm in a press conference, saying the suspect was trying to send a message on TV to her grandparents and that it is "wise not to carry out a media lynching."

Fearing a backlash, Tour de France organizers decided to drop their suit against the fan in question and withdrew their complaint "for the sake of appeasement ... in the face of the excitement on social media," said Tour director Pierre-Yves Thouault. "We don't want to look like we are flogging a dead horse. But we remind you of the safety rules."

The 2021 Tour de France got off to a crash-filled start Saturday. Cyclist Tony Martin rode into a fan holding a cardboard sign Saturday during the first stage, which began in Brest, France. The fan, who appeared to be trying to get on TV, was in the road and took out nearly an entire peloton of riders.

"It was stressful," said former Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas, via The Associated Press . "I was just concentrating on staying on my bike, basically. Happy to get through it."

It was the first of two pileups in the stage. The Tour de France's official Twitter account later cautioned fans to protect the cyclists while enjoying the event.
