Why buying a sim card for Indonesia?

Don't let those slow overseas data roaming packages fool you. They reduce the internet speed and you will end up with a terribly slow data connection on your phone. You want the fastest data speed in Indonesia? Then buy a local prepaid sim card or order an eSIM card online.

First of all we want to avoid high roaming costs! Overseas data plans cost a minimum of $5 USD per day and even more. With an eSIM card or an Indonesia prepaid sim card you might not spend more than $10 USD for the whole month.

Staying connected while traveling to Indonesia makes life so much easier and travleing more fun! Think about ordering an Uber/Grab, checking Google Maps for directions and making sure you don't get lost, finding a good nearby restaurant or finding your nearby friends via Live Location or WhatsApp. So many reasons for staying connected when traveling to Indonesia.

Don't rely on free public WiFi, although widespread in Indonesia there is no guarantee and trust me a 4G/5G data connections is much faster than your hotels' crappy free WiFi.

Also another reminder that public WiFi is on an UNSECURED network connection. The use of a VPN is recommended.

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends a Telkomsel sim card for Indonesia. You can already get a Telkomsel prepaid sim card for tourists with 18 GB data for between $5 to $15 USD depending on where you buy it. Telkomsel has the best 4G/5G network in Indonesia.

These are the prices you can find in local Telkomsel stores. On arrival at the airports in Indonesia they sell the same sim cards for tourist prices. Read more about it in my guides for buying a sim card at Jakarta Airport and Bali Denpasar Airport .

The easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Indonesia in 2024 is an eSIM card as you arrange everything online within just a couple clicks and it starts already from $5.5 USD for 1 GB data.

Traveltomtom recommends ordering an eSIM card for Indonesia via either Nomad , SimOptions or Airalo .

Although buying a local prepaid sim card is the cheapest way to stay connected for those who don't need much data I strongly recommend buying an eSIM card for Indonesia.

Best eSIM cards for Indonesia

The easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Indonesia in 2024 is an eSIM card. No more visiting a sim card store and swapping sim cards. When you get yourself an eSIM card for Indonesia you arrange everything online and get connected in just 2 minutes.

Mobile internet operators in Indonesia

There are 5 different mobile internet providers in Indonesia. Don't forget that Indonesia is one of the world's biggest countries by population: 280 million already as of 2024. All mobile internet providers sell prepaid sim cards for tourists:

  • IM3 (Indosat/Ooredoo)

Smartfren is a fairly new mobile internet provider in Indonesia and the Smartfren mobile data network is not as advanced yet as for example Telkomsel. Especially if you are going off the beaten path in Indonesia I would not recommend a Smartfren prepaid sim card.

There is a big difference in mobile network coverage, so keep reading before you are stuck on an island without a phone signal.

Where to buy a sim card for Indonesia

It is easy to buy a local prepaid sim card in Indonesia as they are sold on basically every street corner. Convenience stores, gas stations, mobile phone shops, official retail stores, electronic shops and so on.

International Airport on arrival

If you decide to buy a local prepaid sim card in Indonesia then the easiest place is at the international airport on arrival. Most probably your trip to Indonesia starts in either Jakarta or Bali. Both International Airports have multiple phone stores that sell prepaid sim cards for tourists.

Flying to Denpasar? Check out Traveltomtom's  guide for buying a sim card at Bali Airport in 2024 .

Flying to Jakarta? Check out Traveltomtom's  guide for buying a sim card at Jakarta Airport in 2024 .

Reminder that you pay tourist prices for Indonesia prepaid sim cards on airports. Expect to pay about 50% more for prepaid sim card plans at Bali or Jakarta Airport. On the contrary, it is very convenient to get connected instantly on arrival and the sim cards with data plans are still quite cheap.

Official retail store mobile internet providers

The best place to buy a local prepaid sim card in Indonesia is at an official mobile internet provider retail store. Here you will get the best service, proper registration, instant activation and the best sim card plans. Go where the locals go and find the cheapest sim card deals.

At an official phone store of the mobile internet operators is also the only place where you can get an eSIM card. However, as of August 2024 there is only one mobile internet provider that offers eSIM cards for tourists. All other operators only give out physical prepaid sim cards.

Random phone stores

When looking for tourist sim cards in Indonesia you can find them in every phone store. But also expect to find different prices everywhere. To get the best prepaid sim card deal you have to shop around, even haggling about the price could be worth it. Good thing is that prices for prepaid sim cards are fairly cheap in Indonesia and most probably you don't care paying $1-2 USD more for your prepaid package.

If buying a sim card on arrival in Indonesia already sounds like too much hassle then order yourself a prepaid sim card or an eSIM card for Indonesia on the internet.

eSIM cards are the easiest way to stay connected as you arrange everything online and as soon as the plane lands you are connected.

Check out Traveltomtom's comparison of the best eSIM cards for traveling to Indonesia in 2024 , but make sure your phone is eSIM compatible. If not, then you can also buy an international prepaid sim card for Indonesia online .

Indonesia prepaid sim card prices in 2024

The following prices for prepaid sim card plans in Indonesia are updated as per August 2024. These are the official prices that you can expect more or less in stores around Indonesia.

However, at tourist hotspots like Bali expect sim cards to be more expensive than official prices. Also the same prepaid sim card could be priced differently in every other phone shop, convenience store, etc.

Mobile internet in Indonesia is CHEAP, but internet data speed in Indonesia is NOT what it is like in your home country, so have low expectations about 4G/LTE and 5G. More about the best 4G/5G network in Indonesia below.

In Indonesia they use the Indonesian Rupiah and as of August 2024: $1 USD = 16,300 IDR and 10,000 IDR = $0.61 USD.

xl indonesia prepaid sim card plans 2024

At XL Axiata they have 4 prepaid sim card plans valid for 30 days:

For the latest prepaid sim card offers check the XL Axiata website . In XL Axiata stores around Indonesia you can only get a physical prepaid sim card, eSIM cards for tourists are NOT provided.

telkomsel indonesia prepaid sim card plans 2024

A Telkomsel prepaid sim card comes with three different data quotas: social media, internet and local quota. The local quota is pretty much for the region/island where you buy your prepaid sim card like: Bali, Java, Sumatra. Confusing a bit to be honest! All prepaid plans are valid for 30 days:

  • Maximum 11 GB data = 42,000 IDR - $2.7 USD
  • Maximum 18 GB data = 66,000 IDR - $4.3 USD
  • Maximum 35 GB data = 83,000 IDR - $5.4 USD
  • Maximum 51 GB data = 115,000 IDR - $7.4 USD
  • Maximum 70 GB data = 138,000 IDR - $8.9 USD

These are the prices for simPATI packages the prepaid sim cards that you can expect in Telkomsel stores around Indonesia. For more info check the  Telkomsel website . In Telkomsel stores around Indonesia you can only get a physical prepaid sim card, eSIM cards for tourists are NOT provided.

IM3 - Indosat/Ooredoo

im3 indonesia prepaid sim card plans 2024

IM3 is the mobile data brand name of a merger of Tri, Indosat and Ooredoo and offers prepaid sim cards with unlimited calls/text to other IM3 phone numbers:

  • 2 GB data = 45,000 IDR - $2.9 USD
  • 6 GB data + 30 minutes calling time = 99,000 IDR - $6.4 USD
  • 16 GB data + 60 minutes calling time + 60 sms = 199,000 IDR - $12.8 USD
  • 30 GB data + 120 minutes calling time + 120 sms = 299,000 - $19.3 USD

For more info check the  Indosat website . In Indosat Ooredoo stores around Indonesia you can only get a physical prepaid sim card, eSIM cards for tourists are NOT provided.

smartfren indonesia prepaid sim card plans 2024

Smartfren has very competitive prepaid sim card deals as it is a fairly new provider and has one of the smallest 3G/4G mobile networks in Indoneisa. The Smartfren prepaid plans come with unlimited social media apps and are valid for 28 days:

  • 1 GB data per day = 45,000 IND - $2.9 USD
  • 2 GB data per day = 80,000 IND - $5.2 USD
  • 3 GB data per day = 100,000 IND - $6.4 USD

Check the  Smartfren  website for more info. In Smartfren stores around Indonesia you can get a physical prepaid sim card or an eSIM card. Smartfren is the only mobile internet operator that offers eSIM cards for tourists.

Best 4G/5G network in Indonesia in 2024

Mobile internet network coverage is quite important for finding the best sim card for traveling in Indonesia. You don't want to get stuck on an island with no phone signal. In some islands you only find a signal of specific providers and others not at all. The best example is East Indonesia. From Flores towards the far East in Papua there is basically only a Telkomsel signal available.

If you are traveling somewhere specific I would recommend you to have a look at the Indonesia 4G/5G network coverage maps .

Is there 5G in Indonesia?

Yes, there is 5G in Indonesia but I would not get too excited! As per 2024 there is only 5G in places like Jakarta, Badung and Denpasar. When traveling around Indonesia you will mostly not find 5G and the fastest data connection you find is 4G/LTE. In some places you can actually be happy that there is a phone signal at all, but that is only if you travel off the beaten path.

In general most of the best places to visit and tourist hotspots in Indonesia are covered with a 4G/LTE phone signal.

Although the above mobile data network coverage maps are updated for 2024 they are not 100% accurate. However, they are a great reference to compare the 4G/5G networks of the mobile internet providers in Indonesia in 2024.

From the above 4G/5G coverage maps for Indonesia we can clearly see that one providers sticks out. After comparing all the 4G/5G network coverage maps it is clear that Telkomsel has by far the best mobile internet network in Indonesia in 2024. Without a doubt!

Best prepaid sim card for Indonesia in 2024

Prices for prepaid sim cards in Indonesia are very cheap and therefore Traveltomtom actually recommends buying a local prepaid sim card on arrival in Indonesia rather than an eSIM card or an international prepaid sim card.

However, eSIM cards are so convenient that I still always get an eSIM card for traveling to Indonesia. On my last trip I used a Nomad eSIM card with 20 GB data and it lasted during all of my 3 weeks in Bali.

It is just so easy to order online and as soon as the plane lands you are already online and enjoying data on your phone and you don't have the hassle of buying a physical prepaid sim card on arrival.

However, it is no secret that local prepaid sim cards that you buy on arrival in Indonesia are cheaper than eSIM cards.

Check out Traveltomtom's guide about the best eSIM cards for traveling to Indonesia in 2024 for more detailed info, answers to FAQ about eSIMs and everything else you need to know before ordering an eSIM card for Indonesia.

Anyway, for those looking to buy a local prepaid sim card on arrival in Indonesia it is a fairly easy conclusion what is the best tourist sim card.

Traveltomtom rates Telkomsel as the best prepaid sim card for tourists in Indonesia in 2024.

Telkomsel has by far the best 4G/5G mobile data network coverage around Indonesia. Prices for prepaid tourist sim cards are also fairly cheap and do not differ much from the other mobile internet operators like Xl Axiata, Smartfren or IM3.

Unfortunately as of August 2024 Telkomsel does only sell physical prepaid sim cards, they don't offer eSIM cards for tourists.

If you are traveling off the beaten path in Indonesia then Traveltomtom definitely only recommends a Telkomsel prepaid sim card. Are you going on a Bali holiday and have no intension leaving the island then a Smartfren, XL or Tri prepaid sim card will also do the job.

However, on my recent trip to Bali I tried out an XL sim card to compare it to Telkomsel and it was clear that the Telkomsel performance in general is much better around Bali.

If you are looking for the cheapest data sim cards for Indonesia then have a look at Smartfren prepaid sim cards. IM3 is more expensive than the other operators and therefore I would not recommend you buying an IM3 prepaid sim card for Indonesia.

My personal recommendation would be the Telkomsel prepaid sim card for Indonesia with 18 GB data for just $4.5 USD. Although, in tourists hotspots this same package will be sold for at least $14 USD.

A local prepaid sim card is the cheapest way to stay connected when traveling to Indonesia in 2024, but you have to go to a local sim card store.

Order a prepaid sim card for Indonesia online

international prepaid sim cards for indonesia 2024

SimOptions also offers physical prepaid sim cards for those who don't have an eSIM compatible phone. If buying a prepaid sim card on arrival in Indonesia sounds like too much effort then order a physical prepaid sim card online.

Arrive prepared in Indonesia with an international prepaid sim card. You order them online and a physical prepaid sim card will be delivered to your home address. You put this sim card in your phone and it automatically connects to an available network upon arrival in Indonesia, basically when the plane lands you are instantly online.

  • Three Data Pack 10 GB - $24.90 USD = 10 GB data for 30 days
  • Orange Holiday World - $49.90 USD = 10 GB data for 14 days

Click here to order one of the above international sim cards for Indonesia directly online  or have a look for more info. Personally I would go for the first option: Three Data Pack 10GB as its gives you 10 GB data for less than $24.90 USD.

Also a last reminder that if you have an eSIM compatible phone you can order an eSIM card for Indonesia with very competitive prices. You can already get 1 GB data for just $5.5 USD and 20 GB data for $39 USD and you arrange everything online within just 2 minutes.

Traveltomtom recommends ordering an eSIM card for Indonesia via either Nomad , SimOptions or Airalo .

Indonesia SIM Card: Everything You Need To Know

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Apr 25, 2024 | Asia , Indonesia , SIM Cards , Travel Tips

Visiting Indonesia soon? Make sure to know what to expect when purchasing an Indonesia SIM card .

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Indonesia in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Indonesia.

If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call a cab, or translate Indonesian – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Indonesia.

Bali, Indonesia

Best SIM Cards In Indonesia

If you’re traveling in Indonesia, we recommend using a SIM card from Telkomsel, XL Axiata, Smartfren, or Airalo.

I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Asia, you might want to pick an option that offers coverage in other Asian countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Indonesia For Tourists

You can buy an Indonesia prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase an Asia prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s look at the mobile data plans offered in Indonesia by Telkomsel, XL Axiata, and Smartfren.

Jakarta, Indonesia

Telkomsel Tourist SIM Card

Telkomsel offers a prepaid tourist plan:

  • 25 GB data, one month for IDR 150,000 ($9.66)

XL Axiata Tourist SIM Card

XL Axiata has two different prepaid plans available:

  • 15 GB data, 30 days for IDR 41,736 ($2.69)
  • 20 GB data, 30 days for IDR 88,946 ($5.73)

As you can see, it is a cheaper option than Telkomsel.

Smarfren Tourist SIM Card

Smartfren offers several SIM-only plans for tourists:

  • 6 GB, 30 days, IDR 30,000 ($1.93)
  • 12 GB, 30 days, IDR 45,000 ($2.90)
  • 30 GB, 30 days, IDR 70,000 ($4.83)
  • 45 GB, 30 days, IDR 100,000 ($6.44)
  • 60 GB, 30 days, IDR 125,000 ($8.05)

Overall, we think Smartfren is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person. That said, any mobile carrier would do if you can’t find their store!

How To Buy An Indonesia Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, the Prepaid Asia-Pacific SIM Card works in more than 17 countries and gives you unlimited data for 14 days. Indonesia is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so look and make sure the countries you plan on visiting are listed.

Browse your options on Amazon

Another option is to purchase a prepaid Asian SIM card on SimOptions .

They currently offer two data plans in Indonesia:

  • 10 GB, valid for 30 days for $24.90
  • 10 GB, valid for 14 days for $49.90

Browse your options on SimOptions

Bikago Mobile offers physical SIM cards and eSIMs in Indonesia.

You’ll get access to the Telkomsel network (the best network in Indonesia and Bali), and you can top up online.

Their data plans are the most affordable ones.

You can pick between 7,15, and 30 days for some data plans.

Here’s an overview of the options available on Bikago Mobile :

  • 1GB, valid for 7 days for $4.99
  • 3GB, valid for 7/15/30 days, starting at $9.50

  • 30GB, valid for 30 days for $66.99
  • 50GB, valid for 30 days for $109.99

You’ll have three options to get your SIM card: collect it at the airport, the Bikago shop, or deliver it by courier.

The two first options are free, but you’ll have to pay extra to get it by courier.

eSIM is a new concept that allows you to have a virtual SIM card inside your phone.

If your mobile phone supports eSIM cards – it’s one of the best options to get data in Indonesia.

Final Thoughts On Indonesia SIM Cards

As you can see, getting a prepaid SIM card in Indonesia or even an eSIM for your travels in Indonesia is pretty straightforward.

You’ll even be able to stay connected wherever you go in Asia without changing your SIM card, especially if you purchase an Asia plan.

I believe the eSIM card is the most convenient way to get data in Indonesia if you wish to have data upon your arrival.

This way, you won’t need to go to a store to buy a SIM card.

However, you need to make sure your mobile phone supports eSIM first.

Indonesia Tourist Sim Card (Airport Pick Up / Hotel Delivery)

Connect to the local network once you arrive at Indonesia

$ 10.00

Maximize Your Moments with 4G/3G Indonesia Sim Card

For those who want to stay connected in Indonesia, buying an Indonesia Sim Card is a fairly straightforward and inexpensive process. Data allowances are generous, from internet data only to free 5 – 10 GB of YouTube data and free 40 minutes local calls. You can choose how much data, which package that you need, and pay accordingly. To get it, you’ll have to fill online registration forms from us, get the SIM card delivered or pick up in Airport arrival hall, and enjoy smooth connectivity during your visit in Indonesia .

A pocket wifi might be a great solution, especially for families and groups. You can connect multiple devices without worrying about phone battery running out due to tethering. But use a local SIM Card is a good option if you prefer a tiny card that plugs directly into your smartphone (without the hassle of bringing a router everywhere).

7 Best SIM Cards for Indonesia in 2024

Home | Travel | Asia | Indonesia | 7 Best SIM Cards for Indonesia in 2024

When traveling abroad, get a policy from one of the  best travel insurance companies . You can get a  5% discount   on Heymondo , the only insurance that pays medical bills upfront for you, HERE!

A SIM card in Indonesia can be a lifesaver during your visit to this incredible country. It’ll help you get updated information, find directions on Google Maps, and stay in touch with loved ones. A few years ago, we took a trip to Bali and other parts of Indonesia and fell in love with the country. And of course, having mobile data on our phones saved us on multiple occasions.

If you’re getting ready for your adventure, in addition to finding the best things to do in Bali and deciding whether to see the orangutans at Bukit Lawang , I recommend choosing a SIM card for Indonesia that suits your travel style.

We always use the Holafly eSIM card because it’s super easy to install and comes with unlimited data. If your phone is eSIM-compatible, it’s your best option. Plus, you can take advantage of this Holafly discount to save money.

5% OFF your international eSIM card

But there are other great choices, like SimOptions , which offers plans for up to 1 month with budget-friendly prices, in case you prefer a physical SIM card.

If saving money is your priority, you can also opt for one of the local SIM cards in Indonesia . In this article, I’ll explore each option along with all the necessary information about them, including pricing and data limits, so you can pick the best one for your needs.

How do SIM cards in Indonesia work?

SIM cards in Indonesia work pretty much the same as they do in your home country. They provide Internet access and, in some cases, texting and calling without additional costs.

To set up your SIM card in Indonesia , first, you must ensure your device is compatible with the country’s networks. If you decide on an eSIM for Indonesia , check your phone’s compatibility using this link .

Agung Volcano Bali, sim card for indonesia

If you opt for a physical SIM card for Indonesia , it’s as simple as inserting it into your device to start using the Internet. If your phone doesn’t have a dual-slot, make sure to keep your home country’s SIM card in a safe place to prevent damage.

Activating a digital SIM card in Indonesia is even easier. After you make the purchase, you’ll receive a QR code via email. Once you scan the code, you are all set to enjoy the Internet in Indonesia without incurring roaming charges.

Indonesian SIM cards comparison and prices

In the following table, you’ll find the best SIM cards for Indonesia . We’ve got the Holafly eSIM card , the SimOptions SIM card , and some of the most popular local Indonesian SIM cards . This chart shows the key details about each option, including prices, duration, and data limits.

After analyzing these options, you’ll probably notice that the Holafly eSIM is the only SIM card for Indonesia with unlimited data . If you’re looking for a stable connection, need to be plugged in for work, or simply want to use social media, this is your best bet.

That being said, there are other plans from local phone companies offering generous data limits at budget-friendly rates. Still, I prefer paying a bit more and enjoying the high speed and other benefits that Holafly provides.

One significant advantage shared by both the Holafly eSIM and the SimOptions card is that you can set them up at home before starting your journey. Personally, this brings me peace of mind, as I can begin browsing the internet as soon as I arrive in Indonesia. This has helped me save time in long lines at airport phone booths and allowed me to book a Grab and reach my hotel without any delays.

Best SIM cards for Indonesia

For me, the Holafly eSIM is the most convenient way to have Internet while traveling . It’s super practical, easy to use, and has consistently provided excellent coverage on all my trips.

However, if you prefer a physical SIM card, I recommend the SimOptions card, which offers a variety of plans with considerable data to keep you connected throughout your vacation. Just remember to order it in advance, since it may take up to 72 hours to arrive at your doorstep.

Now, let me to provide more insight into the features, pros, and cons of each SIM card for Indonesia .

1. Holafly eSIM , the best SIM card for Indonesia

The Holafly eSIM is the best eSIM for Indonesia with unlimited data . This digital SIM card is a fantastic choice for those who lack a dual SIM slot on their mobile phones or even for travelers who are already on the road.

The activation process is very simple. All you need to do is scan a QR code that you will receive by email upon purchase, and that’s it! However, you should keep in mind that not all mobile devices are compatible with this digital SIM. So, make sure to verify your device’s compatibility first by using this link .

Holafly eSIM card, esim indonesia telkomsel

This eSIM for Indonesia offers various plan durations, ensuring that you won’t pay extra or run out of data in the middle of your vacation. Plus, you’ll have unlimited data, so you can update your social media, work remotely, or surf the Internet as much as you want without any worries.

Another standout feature is the 24/7 technical support. This kind of support is invaluable when you’re in a foreign country, especially one where you might not speak the language. What’s more, the Internet you’ll get with this SIM card in Indonesia is not only secure but also high-speed, making you feel like you’re browsing from your own home.

We’ve used Holafly in more than 10 different countries, including Indonesia, and I was especially surprised by the extensive coverage of their SIM card in Bali, Indonesia , even in remote areas where the local SIM cards of our fellow travelers often fail. This is because Holafly typically partners with more than one local network to offer the best connection for travelers.

If you decide to choose this SIM card for Indonesia , here’s an Holafly discount as well as other travel discounts that will surely help you prepare for your next trip to the country.

2. SimOptions card , the best physical SIM card for Indonesia

If you are a traditional traveler and prefer a physical SIM card for Indonesia , the SimOptions card is an ideal choice for you. Personally, I like to have my device ready to go before embarking on a journey so that I can stay connected as soon as I land at my destination. This is especially handy if you, like us, wish to start a 7-day adventure in Bali and plan to head straight to Ubud from the airport. Another advantage is that if your phone doesn’t have a dual SIM slot, you can leave your local SIM card safely at home and eliminate the risk of losing or damaging it during your vacation.

SimOptions, sim card indonesia bali

Once you purchase this SIM card for Indonesia , it’ll be delivered to your home within 3 business days, so, I recommend placing your order in advance.

To install it, you just have to insert the SIM card into your mobile phone, and you’re good to go. Plus, if you encounter any questions or issues along the way, there’s a support team ready to help you out.

3. Telkomsel , another excellent SIM card for Indonesia

Telkomsel is one of the most famous local Indonesian SIM card companies, providing coverage in 97% of Indonesia. So, whether you’re traversing the Gili Islands or exploring the temples of Yogyakarta , rest assured that you’ll have a reliable connection with Telkomsel.

They offer reasonably priced month-long plans, so, if you think 25GB is enough for your trip, this might be an excellent choice for you. The downside is that you will need to spend time during your trip to purchase this Indonesian SIM card , so it’s not an option I recommend, especially for a short trip.

Telkomsel, the best indonesia sim card for tourists

Initially, you’ll need to purchase it online and then collect it from one of their designated pick-up points, which are only available on the islands of Bali or Lombok. Keep in mind that for the collection process, you’ll need to present the confirmation email, your passport, and your phone’s IMEI number.

Another challenge is that not all of their in-store staff will speak English. So, depending on your luck with the salesperson, the process of purchasing this mobile SIM card for Indonesia can be somewhat complicated. Additionally, the activation process is done through SMS in Indonesian, so you’ll need help at the store.

4. XL , one of the best SIM cards in Indonesia for one-month trips

XL is another top choice among Indonesian SIM cards . This company offers generous data plans, making it a fantastic choice for those looking to get the most out of their connection without breaking the bank.

The downside is that they only offer monthly plans, but considering their rates, it might be a worthwhile investment. It also provides great coverage in various regions, including Jakarta, Bali, Java, and Lombok, so you shouldn’t have any problems.

XL SIM card, best esim for indonesia

In my case, I prefer to have my phone set up before going on a trip. However, if you decide on this SIM card, all you need to do is insert it into your device to get started. I recommend seeking assistance from the salesperson to ensure everything is working correctly. Remember that if you encounter any issues, you may not receive support in English, which could be quite challenging.

Additionally, I suggest asking the store attendant for data confirmation via SMS, as some of my friends were sold cards that had already been used, which means they had less data than they had purchased.

5. IM3 Indosat , a SIM card for Indonesia with good coverage

Indosat is another well-known mobile phone company, so if you’re looking for a reliable mobile SIM card for Indonesia , it’s an option worth checking out.

IM3 Indostat, sim card indonesia bali

They offer both two-week and one-month plans at very low prices. However, be aware that mobile data is limited, so if you need to work remotely or want to use social media more frequently, these plans may not be enough. Sometimes we choose the cheapest rates, only to find ourselves needing to make additional recharges that will end up costing us more.

To obtain an Indosat SIM card, you’ll need to visit one of their official stores and provide your passport for registration. If saving money is a priority, this could be a viable option. But keep in mind that stores often have long lines, and you’ll need to spend time during your trip to compare offers and complete forms.

6. 3 (Tri) , a cheap SIM card for Indonesia

If you want a prepaid SIM card for Indonesia and haven’t made up your mind yet, I’d recommend choosing 3 (Tri) . They provide one-month plans with 30GB of mobile data, ensuring you can stay connected without spending a fortune.

3 (Tri) SIM card, best esim for Indonesia

You can get a 3 (Tri) SIM card at certain convenience stores and even supermarkets. But remember that you’ll need to install and activate it yourself, and the whole process will be in Indonesian. So, I recommend doing so at one of their official stores. Plus, some fellow travelers warned us that these SIM cards can sometimes be deactivated prematurely or may not contain the amount of mobile data they claim.

7. Smartfren , another one of the cheapest SIM cards for Indonesia

Lastly, Smartfren is an exceptionally affordable prepaid SIM card for Indonesia , so, if you’re looking for a low-cost option, you can check it out. The data plans they offer are quite generous, starting from 30GB for a one-month period. So, it can be a suitable choice if you have a high data consumption.

Smartfren SIM card, indonesia sim card for tourist

The major drawback is that it’s not specifically designed for tourists. All the notifications and installation instructions are in the local language, which makes it impractical for foreign speakers. If you decide to purchase this SIM card in Indonesia , I recommend having it set up at an official store.

Personally, I always prefer to receive technical support in my language and have the assurance that everything is functioning correctly, so this isn’t my first choice.

Where to buy a SIM card for Indonesia

When it comes to buying a SIM card for Indonesia , you have the option to do it from your home country before your trip or after you arrive at your destination. Personally, I prefer to have everything sorted out in advance, so I can relax and fully enjoy my journey. But I’ll explain both options in case you decide to follow the other approach.

Buy a SIM card for Indonesia before your trip

In my opinion, getting a SIM card for Indonesia before starting on your journey is the best option. This way, I have the time to install it and verify that everything is working correctly before I leave home.

If you opt for the Holafly eSIM , you can order it online, and you’ll receive it in your email instantly. All you need to do is scan a QR code to begin using the internet. Another option is to order one of the physical SIM cards from SimOptions , which will be delivered to your home within 3 business days.

Buy a SIM card for Indonesia at your destination

If you decide to purchase a local SIM card for Indonesia , you will need to wait until you arrive at your destination to have Internet on your device.

Ocean cliff in Indonesia, esim indonesia telkomsel

If you choose this option, make sure to visit one of the official stores of the mobile network provider. If your device is compatible, simply insert the SIM card into your phone to get connected. But remember, if you don’t have a dual-slot, ensure that your first SIM is stored in a safe place.

Depending on the local company you select, there might be an activation process by SMS or phone call, which will be in Indonesian. Therefore, I suggest seeking assistance at the store and not leaving until you have confirmed that the data you have is as per your contract.

One great thing about the Holafly eSIM is that you can order it even when you’re already traveling, as it will be delivered to your email. So, if you happen to forget to arrange it before your trip, you have nothing to worry about.

How to activate a SIM card for Indonesia

The process of activating your international SIM card  may vary depending on the card you choose, but I assure you that it’s generally simple and quick. For the Holafly eSIM , activation is as simple as scanning the QR code that is automatically sent to your phone upon purchase.

For other physical SIM cards, you’ll need to insert the card into your device, and it will be ready to use. Depending on the mobile network provider you choose, you might have to call a designated phone line and follow a series of steps, usually in Indonesian. The activation can also be done via SMS. I recommend activating your SIM card for Indonesia at an official store to ensure your phone is properly set up.

Indonesia SIM card requirements and compatibility

It’s crucial that your phone is unlocked and compatible with the network frequency in Indonesia; otherwise, you won’t be able to use any of the SIM cards for Indonesia , regardless of your choice.

Denpasar Bali, international sim card for indonesia

As for the Holafly eSIM , you can check if your device is compatible via this link . If you have a relatively new phone, you’ve got nothing to worry about, as these international eSIMs work with almost all new devices. Nevertheless, it’s always a good idea to review the list of compatible models and brands.

Typically, you won’t need to present any specific documents to purchase an international SIM card for Indonesia , with the exception of the Telkomsel company, which may require you to verify your identity when collecting your SIM card.

Indonesia SIM card vs Asia SIM card

If you’re planning to travel to multiple countries across Asia, like I did during my 20-day Southeast Asia trip , you might consider the Holafly eSIM for Asia . This card allows you to use your mobile data in over 12 countries, including South Korea, Japan, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Laos.

Holafly has cards for 5, 7, 10, 15, 20, and 30 days, all with unlimited data. Depending on your itinerary and data consumption, an Asia SIM card could be more practical than purchasing individual cards for each country.

You can find more details below.

If your mobile phone isn’t compatible with digital cards, SimOptions also offers SIM cards for Asia, which I encourage you to check out here .

And that wraps up our guide on the best Indonesian SIM cards . I hope this guide has helped you choose the best SIM card for your trip so you can get internet in Indonesia . If you have any questions or wish to share your experiences, feel free to leave a comment below. I’d be happy to hear from you!

Enjoy your trip!
