How We Chose the Best Baby Travel Essentials

We get it—parenting requires a lot of gear, and it can be hard to find the best fit for your family every time. To streamline your shopping (and packing) experience, we browsed baby travel essentials from an array of leading baby brands and trusted online retailers. We considered a list of criteria when sourcing products, such as ease of use, weight, size, portability, quality and durability, value, style and, of course, safety. We also read user reviews to understand how these products have worked for real families on the go, and didn’t consider anything with less than an average four-star rating. What’s more, we also looked for products that meet IATA requirements or have Aircraft Certification where applicable.

38 Best Baby Travel Gear Items for 2024 + What NOT To Bring

Hi All! My name is Lyric Fergusson. My husband, Asher, and I are the parents of two incredible babies named Kingsley and Aurora (pictured). Our little ones have been with us to France, Italy, Mexico, Belize, Honduras, South America, five Caribbean Islands & on a road trip to California and the Grand Canyon — and having them along has been amazing and mostly stress-free!

This said, as a mama, I fully understand how intimidating it can be to travel with a baby, especially for the first time.

We feel that having the right gear is key to making a family trip a truly enjoyable one, and we believe it is a large part of why we’ve had such wonderful travels with our babies. That’s why we created this guide for the must-haves and great accessories that will make traveling as a family way easier!

38 Essential Baby Travel Items

1. travel stroller.

Airport security rules state that any stroller that weighs over 20 lbs (9 kgs), is too bulky, or is non-collapsible must be checked at the ticket counter .

Mamas, this means if your stroller exceeds the weight limits, you will be schlepping your baby and ALL of your bags through the airport with no stroller. Suffice it to say, you’ll regret the decision to bring a heavy stroller.

This Summer Infant 3DLite is our top travel stroller pick. It’s inexpensive, durable, only 13 lbs, and has a multi-position recline that goes practically flat for an on-the-go nap. It fits in the smallest of trunks and we’ve even hauled it (pretty easily) up and down six flights of stairs in Paris. If the 3D Lite isn’t your bucket-list stroller, check out the Nova for luxury, the Summer Two-Seater , or a foldable wagon which is always a fun idea (especially if you’re hauling around more than one toddler or headed to a beach destination!)

2. Stroller + Car Seat Combo

You can compromise with the best of both worlds – opting for this 3-in-1 Trio system by Chicco . It is designed with travel in mind, helping you create a full-blown system that your kids can grow with. While in stroller mode, the canopy expands for UV protection, or you can push it down and click it into place to activate car-seat/booster mode. It quickly folds and unfolds to suit your needs and holds so much stuff like groceries, blankets, etc.

I will say, it’s slightly bulkier than some options, but that’s the trade-off of having an all-in-one piece, which means fewer items to carry around. Overall, it will make your baggage lighter and cut down on the amount of equipment you have to keep up with.

Stroller + Car Seat Combo

3. Convertible Travel Carseat

While the stroller + car seat combo is ideal for infants, this option is better for families needing more weight flexibility and a car seat for growing kids.

I would never put my baby in a car without a car seat. However, I cannot imagine lugging around our 35 lb one across the airport, let alone Europe! This one weighs only 12 lbs and works for children from 5-65 lbs (check the weight limits for each mode, forward or rear-facing).

Note: All airlines will check your car seat at the ticket counter free of charge.

Convertible Travel Carseat

4. Travel Crib (a.k.a. Travel Playpen)

In our experience, the Baby Bjorn Travel Crib is the best of the best when it comes to travel cribs. It’s only 12 lbs, really well-made, and you can put it together and take it down in less than 10 seconds (without reading any instructions!) The crib has an extremely cushy mattress pad that lays flat on the Earth, (unlike the Guava Lotus which we didn’t like ) and most other travel cribs where the mattresses hover above the ground and wobble whenever your baby shifts during the night (sounds comfy, right?)

It even comes with a chic, easy-to-carry case. Our little guy has slept beautifully through the night on every trip we have ever taken and I really think it is because of this crib. You can let them play and nap in it before you head out so they can become familiar with it. They will sleep so much better!

Note: All domestic airlines will check your crib at the ticket counter free of charge. I always check with international carriers about their policy prior to traveling.

5. Quick-Dry Travel Towels

Travel towels are one of the most versatile items you can pack. It can serve as a drool rag, seat cover, packing cushion, and much more. They’re also amazing for cleaning up spills! When we discovered these, we stopped bringing along bulky towels or trying to pack fluffy ones that the hotel provides when going on beach trips. This one dries 10x faster than cotton and weighs less than half a pound — perfect for in the diaper bag!

Quick-Dry Travel Towels

6. Travel Insurance for Your Trip

Since your domestic provider typically does not cover you outside of the country, the last thing you want to worry about is rushing a spouse or child to the hospital and having to pay out-of-pocket for a five-figure bill. Protect your vacation investment and your loved ones with travel insurance – it’s a small price compared to anything else you’re booking, yet will cover you for flight cancellations, delays, baggage loss, theft, and expensive medical emergencies.

We use Faye because they are revolutionizing the insurance game! While most providers make the process miserable with tons of paperwork and hoops to jump through – Faye reimburses you through their mobile app, making the claims process a cakewalk. Get a customized quote for each trip and traveler. It’s very affordable for young families since it goes up in cost with age and is worth it for the sheer peace of mind.

7. Diaper Changing Pad

My husband and I use the  Kopi Baby changing pad religiously during travel because it folds up easily into a small bag, keeping everything clean (wipes, diapers, etc.) even when we’re in seriously dirty places.

We have used it on the airport floor, in the Louvre, and in Caribbean bathrooms that had no changing tables. Yuck! It’s honestly the bomb and really worth the spend for travel.

Diaper Changing Pad

8. Short-Sleeved Bib

These amazing bibs from Bumpkins are my favorites because they are wearable like a shirt. Simply latch the back and your kiddo’s outfit will have full coverage from even the goopiest of foods. It’s waterproof and therefore super easy to clean — even in small cruise ship sinks — while also drying quickly and saving you a lot of cleanup!

Short-Sleeved Bib

9. Hanging Toiletry Bag

Moms deal with more STUFF than basically anyone on the planet (wipes, tissues, first-aid, snacks, toys, oh my!) Use this hanging toiletry bag to organize all of your family’s toiletries in one bag instead of dealing with unhinged chaos all over the hotel room. This is a way easier system than piling tons of plastic sacks with liquid bottles that you’re trying to keep from leaking all over your suitcase.

We’re obsessed with this bag from Eco Sun, a sustainable company in Hawaii that is made by travelers, for travelers. It organizes all of our self-care routines (and thus, our sanity!) with a leakproof design and stain-resistant material. There are 4 pockets on the inside with elastic bands to hold your bottles and brushes in place, plus 3 external compartments for smaller items that you need easy access to. It’s an elegant and cohesive system for an area of my life that would otherwise be pretty stressful on the road.

10. Stroller Clips

Whether you are using a blanket to block out the sun or to keep your little one warm, stroller clips are awesome because they’ll secure the blanket just where it needs to be. That way, your baby can sleep peacefully — and you can push them easily (no more blankets getting tangled in the wheels, blown off by the wind, or dragged on the floor).

Stroller clips are also great for attaching the diaper bag, your purse, baby’s toys, or really anything else to the stroller.

Stroller Clips

11. Stroller Protector Bag

You will typically have to check your stroller at the gate between flights and this bag will save it from getting wet or damaged as the flight crew is literally throwing it on and off the belly of the plane. The Hap Tim Stroller Bag is extremely sturdy and streamlined, which is helpful when moving the stroller in and out of taxis, hotels, and rental cars, and it has a long set of straps that make carrying the stroller a piece of cake.

Stroller Protector Bag

12. Wet/Dry Sacks

Poop can happen at any time. In case you don’t want to mess up your nicer diaper bags, having wet/dry bags on hand at all times is beyond useful. These are just as durable as your high-end bags but not so precious that you’ll worry about them getting ruined (about what you would spend on a week’s worth of ziplocks). It also is easier to clean in the washing machine and traps the stinky diaper smell so you’re not trapped in a stink bubble all day! Besides being leakproof, you’re helping Mother Earth by going reusable.

Wet/Dry Sacks

13. TSA-Approved Luggage Locks

After having items stolen out of our check luggage, we never forgo luggage locks. We bring a couple of sets for suitcases, city lockers, using backpacks in crowded areas, and more. Plus, these are TSA-approved so you won’t suffer through any hang-ups at security.

TSA-Approved Luggage Locks

14. Insulated Food Jar

This jar has saved us so many times. If your baby is eating solids but is picky, likes warm snacks, or is just not into eating restaurant food yet (and you aren’t too keen on always giving them jars of pre-packaged food), I would bring along one of these. You can bake them a yam at grandma’s or order some steamed veggies at your hotel and throw the food in the Foogo Thermos , and it will stay warm for hours while you tour Rome or head to the beach.

Insulated Food Jar

15. Neck Wallet

When traveling with little ones, things can get hectic REAL QUICK while going through airports, taxis, and beyond. This neck wallet makes it super easy to keep track of where your family’s passports, phones, credit cards, cash, and plane tickets are while also preventing petty theft or sticky fingers. My hubby wears his with all four of our family’s passports and when we’re in crowded places, he conceals it under his shirt. This one also comes with RFID-blocking material to stop e-thieves from scanning your financial data.

Neck Wallet

16. Diaper Bag

For your full-blown Diaper bag, this bag is awesome for allowing you to have tons of storage in a waterproof case. This diaper bag from BabbleRoo is stylish, lightweight, and won’t break the bank. It also has 18 pockets to hold everything from diapers to a water bottle to your cell phone. And if you spill milk (or baby pukes on the bag), no problem! The wipe-clean material is super easy to clean. Bonus: It comes with a matching changing pad in case you forget your Kopi Baby !

Diaper Bag

17. Sleep Sack

We love the Woolino sleep sack! It is 100% natural, made from premium soft Australian merino wool, has an organic cotton outer shell, and is machine-washable. It also regulates the body temperature and is comfortable for baby from external temperatures as low as 60°F (16°C) to as high as 77°F (25°C).

It’s a great way to keep your honey cozy on an airplane, and so helpful for unpredictable temperatures in hotels or and even at grandma’s house. One extra bonus: we don’t have to travel with many blankets which keeps our luggage weight down.

Sleep Sack

18. Homeopathic First Aid Kit

Don’t leave home without these remedies – we certainly don’t. They are natural, safe, effective, and don’t cause harmful side effects.

They have saved us repeatedly during teething, tummy aches, or crabby spells. I can’t recommend them enough.

  • Camilia Teething Relief  – These all-natural drops relieve painful gums and irritability from teething, as well as associated digestive distress. The single-use containers help prevent contamination.
  • Natural Gas Relief  – Even with the grape flavor, these drops have NO artificial flavors or dyes. They provide natural relief for all the symptoms that come along with gas, like bloating, colic, constipation, and restlessness.
  • Baby Calm – If your baby is fussy or won’t sleep, try these tablets. They’re quick-dissolving and provide immediate relief, so you can both get back to sleep.
  • Earache Relief  – If your baby has an earache, these all-natural drops will help relieve symptoms like fever, pain, irritability, and sleeplessness. The dosing dropper makes it super easy to apply the drops.
  • Echinacea Drops  – Our little guy has yet to get sick while we’ve traveled, and I really think It’s due to these drops. If Kingsley looks like he is possibly heading in the sick direction I give him this and it boosts his immune system immediately. He even likes the taste.
  • Baby Vitamin C – Vitamin C is another awesome immune booster which I give our son a few days before we begin traveling. I give it to him again if I think he seems like he might be catching something.

19. Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Did you know that you risk your private data whenever you join a public network at cafes, Airbnbs, hotels, and the airport? And many people can monitor your online activity without your permission, including cyber thieves, your internet provider, government entities, and nosy neighbors! A virtual private network (VPN) keeps all of your digital information secure from hackers so you don’t have to worry about your credit cards, passwords, or other confidential info getting stolen.

You’re bound to connect to a random Wi-Fi network when traveling, so take the extra step to encrypt your network with a VPN like NordVPN . It’s super affordable and will also limit any local censorship you may face, which can block your favorite websites like Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, and more. We never travel without a VPN and even use it at home to ensure a safe connection! Give it a try, there’s even a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

20. Luggage Straps

Just as every outdoorsman should carry rope – every parent should have this adjustable strap! It’s a multi-purposeful item that can serve you in a variety of ways (depending on how creative you want to get). First and foremost, it secures your checked luggage and carry-on bags for rough handling and takes the pressure off of your zippers.

Beyond this, the brightly-colored straps will help your family’s bags stand out at the arrivals terminal (where everyone and their uncle has the same black bag), so it’s a massive timesaver.

More creatively, you can tether a bunch of bags together, create a makeshift strap if one breaks, compress items that are overpacked, and basically secure anything that is falling apart. I once used these to fix my friend’s suitcase that broke, which got us through to the next flight. And the built-in contact card is invaluable if your bags end up getting lost. It’s one of our favorite discoveries and a must for any traveler’s packing list!

21. Packing Cubes

If you have ever dug frantically into a suitcase looking for a single clean baby sock while your whole family is downstairs waiting for you, you will understand why packing cubes are a necessity! I usually put my son’s t-shirts and shorts in one cube, his long-sleeved sweaters and pants in another, and accessories in another. It seriously helps us stay organized!

22. Mini White Noise Machine

You might think, “Why do I need a white noise machine when I have an App on my iPhone?” Well, let me tell you that if you use your phone for white noise, that means your phone is held hostage in the baby’s room while you are in the living room trying to make a dinner reservation or check work emails, etc.

This pocket-sized white noise machine was the best purchase we made before our Caribbean cruise adventure. Both at our hotel in Puerto Rico and on the cruise itself, we had to deal with some really rowdy people yelling at all hours of the night. We were kind of shocked – our little dude slept peacefully through the night when we had this white noise machine on. I won’t travel without it now. It takes up virtually no space and you never know who is going to be your neighbor!

Mini White Noise Machine

23. Sanitizing Wipes

These are awesome! They are cheap and I’ve used them to wipe down airline trays, restaurant high chairs, bathroom changing tables (and of course, our hands) while exploring. The individual packets fit easily in your diaper bag or your coat pocket without being bulky. An absolute 5-star in our book.

Sanitizing Wipes

24. Baby Carrier

Ok, I know most of you probably already have a baby carrier, but I have to mention this Baby Bjorn Carrier because it’s been amazing for us while traveling.

It’s really comfortable, not bulky, and can easily fold up and fit under the stroller. We even use it as a portable high chair! How? Well, when my little dude was too tiny to fit in a restaurant high chair but was eating solids, he could comfortably have his entire meal while strapped to my hubby. It made eating out really enjoyable and low-stress, plus the carrier is super easy to wipe down and wash.

Baby Carrier

25. Universal Power Adapter

There are 15 styles of outlets around the world, so it’s nice to avoid buying a brand new power adapter for each country. This universal option is compatible with outlets in 100+ popular destinations and has multiple USB outlets for efficient charging. Not to mention, it very well could be the last adapter you ever have to buy since it comes with a lifetime replacement guarantee.

Universal Power Adapter

26. Inflatable Travel Bed

This adorable inflatable toddler bed is a game-changer for kiddos who are too big for a crib but need their own space to sleep on a trip. I worry about my tots falling out of massive beds at hotels or Airbnbs, and this option is comfy, easy to blow up, and keeps them close while still giving them a sense of independence. We’ve traveled with two of these for years and our kiddos are big fans!

27. Neck Pillow for Toddlers

Speaking of difficulty in transit, a neck pillow for kids is smart to have on-hand in case your babes can’t sprawl out. For those of you familiar with the strange positions your children’s heads can get into on long car rides, this one will support your toddler’s neck and be useful in almost all traveling scenarios. Moms that are breastfeeding may consider an inflatable nursing pillow that is made for travel and lumbar support.

28. Windproof Travel Umbrella

An umbrella should always be in your travel artillery and this one weighs only 1-pound and fits in your diaper bag. It comes with a convenient carrying case and has sheltered us from some pretty vicious storms since it’s windproof and covers 2 people (plus baby if you all snuggle close!)

Umbrella

29. Portable High Chair

We love bringing our foldable high chair to make mealtime go much smoother whether you are at an AirBnB or at grandma’s. It works for babies up to toddlers and is a great solution for restaurants that don’t have booster seats or high chairs. It’s compact and has some sneaky pockets, plus a carrying case. The tray is free of harmful chemicals like BPA, and it’s dishwasher safe.

Portable High Chair

30. All-in-One Food Processor

A food processor is so useful for blending up fresh fruits and vegetables for your little one on-the-go. This set comes with silicon molds as a freezer tray and glass cases for storage. My babies loved easy concoctions like mangos with sweet potatoes, carrot with orange, and bananas with strawberries. Yum!

All-in-One Food Processor

31. Cooling Towel

For any tropical escapes or warm destinations, this cooling towel is a godsend! It’s absolutely non-toxic and safe for baby to hold onto. By adding water and wringing it out, the towel magically drops to 20-30 degrees colder than the outside temp. Anytime you need more icey relief, simply add more water. It will save baby, dad and mom from heat-induced melt-downs. Try it out and you can thank us later!

32. Baby-Proofing Gear

Babyproofing is something you should consider doing anywhere you stay. Whether they’re crawling, scooting, or starting to walk, it’s a preventative measure worth taking, especially if you are traveling to a home or Bnb that you know is not baby-proofed

Of course, a gate should be kept anywhere you don’t want your little one to roam (like the stairs or outside). For your curious explorers, you may also need outlet covers , safety straps for cabinets, door knob covers , and corner protectors for tables or sharp edges.

Baby-Proofing Gear

33. Car Seat Protector Backpack

Many parents complain that their car seat has gotten dirty, cracked or damaged when they’ve traveled — especially if they check it at the ticket counter. Because of this bag, we’ve never had any trouble.

It’s padded, and although you might look a little ridiculous with it on your back, I can’t tell you how nice it is to have two free hands when you are trying to wrangle multiple children and luggage. I’m a pretty tiny woman, and I can very comfortably wear it while using my hands for other things.

34. Inflatable Baby Bathtub

Not only is this thing cute as can be, but it blows up easily to make a bathtub that’s fantastic for travel. The textured bottom means baby won’t slip around, but it’s small enough to keep them in place. It’s surprisingly scientific since it has hot-white technology that lets you know when the water is too hot, displaying a different color. It was awarded ‘top baby bath’ in 2016 and is easy to drain from the bottom without any heavy lifting.

35. Baby-Safe Dish Soap

Cleaning bottles, sippy cups, bibs, and pacifiers on the go can be a bit of a challenge, I know! And it’s really hard to get to a destination and realize you have no soap to wash your bubba’s stuff (story of my life in the Caribbean… whoops!) I now bring along baby-safe dish soap so that I can be sure that all of Kingsley and Aurora’s belongings stay clean even when I’m rushing to wash them in a tiny bathroom basin.

36. Travel Potty-Training Seat

This is excellent for traveling families with a toddler in toilet training! Not only is it adorable, but it comes in many different colors and latches onto most standard-sized toilets. The foldable design means you can store it in your diaper bag and then whip it out when necessary at hotels, malls, airports, on planes, or wherever. WAY easier than holding your kid in the air as they hover over a gross toilet seat! And super easy to clean.

37. Diaper Rash Cream

This is hands down the best diaper rash cream out there! We initially got it in a gift set with our first baby but have now bought countless tubes. It is the main diaper cream we use, especially if we are trying to treat a rash. We will sometimes use Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment if we are just preventing irritation on a clear butt. If we have a really bad rash, we will layer and use both. This cream is so thick, smells lovely, and works without the harsh chemicals.

38. Your Favorite Bedtime Story

Maintaining your routine while traveling will add a sense of normalcy to the experience. Your little one will find comfort in familiarity and it will help them sleep in a new place. So bring along your favorite book or try a new one to end the day with a sweet story. Reading aloud builds a network of words in their heads and can help them develop their language and speaking skills more quickly. Plus, your voice is so soothing to them and will help ease them into sleep.

What NOT to Bring when Traveling with Baby

1. don’t bring a bulky stroller (no jogging strollers.

They’re hard to get in and out of a small rental car, and almost impossible to lift when you’re juggling baby AND luggage at the same time (and don’t even think about trying to collapse it!).

2. DON’T TAKE a bulky car seat

A big, heavy car seat also makes it hard to hold baby and deal with luggage, and even harder to run through the airport to catch your flight! Plus car seats can get damaged when traveling, so you don’t want to be using an expensive one.

3. DON’T PACK cloth diapers

Cloth diapers are eco-friendly, but don’t feel bad if you don’t want to mess with them when traveling. They create a lot of extra work, and you’ll already be plenty busy traveling with a baby.

4. DON’T BRING heavy toys

There’s no need to lug around your baby’s heaviest toys when you’re traveling. Bring their lightweight ones instead, and you can always buy a few new toys at your destination for added fun!

5. DON’T PACK too many blankets

It’s tempting to think you should bring tons of extra blankets “just in case.” Just don’t. Go for a sleep sack instead – they’re easier and they stay put on their own. Bringing extra blankets is asking for weight, bulk, and extra laundry!

6. DON’T TAKE too many diapers

Disposable diapers are bulky, so think about how many you’ll need before you pack (do bring some extras – just not too many extras!). Better yet, have  Honest Company Diapers  ship a pack to your location, or if you’re going overseas, just buy them when you arrive.

7. DON’T BRING heavy baby books

Maybe you want to use your vacation time to catch up on some reading, but this is not the time to tackle that 500-page book on everything you’re doing wrong as a parent. You’re on vacation, treat yourself to some light beach reading instead, and make it even more convenient by using a Kindle .

8. DON’T PACK too few baby clothes

I know this sounds odd, but it’s a balance. Of course you don’t want your suitcase to be too heavy, but you don’t want to spend your whole trip washing either. And honestly, it’s not like baby clothes weigh much!

9. DON’T TAKE full-sized bottles

Traveling with a baby means packing lots of liquids (baby shampoo, baby lotion, dish soap, etc.), on top of your own toiletries. So many regular-sized bottles will be way too heavy, so pack all your liquids in travel-sized containers instead.

10. DON’T PACK too many disposable items

No matter where you’re traveling, you’ll probably be able to get things like wet wipes, tissues, and plastic bags pretty easily. So just bring as many as you’ll realistically use, and know that you can easily pick up more if you end up needing them.

FAQs about traveling with a baby

1. does my baby need a passport.

Does my baby need a passport?

Yes. Regardless of their age, your baby needs a passport for international trips, including to Canada.

To get them a passport in the U.S., you will need a copy of the birth certificate and two 2″x2″ photos of the baby (from the shoulders up), and both parents need to come with the baby to a passport acceptance facility. Single parents must present a custody agreement, and if one parent is not able to come (such as if they’re stationed elsewhere), a signed and notarized Form DS-3053 will also have to be presented.

2. How should I choose a hotel when traveling with a baby?

  • To minimize your time schlepping everything around, look for a hotel that’s near the attractions you plan to visit or at least near public transportation if you’ll be using it.
  • Having quiet at nighttime is key, so try to avoid hotels on busy streets, as well as older buildings, which may not have good soundproofing.
  • You’ll probably need to do laundry at some point, so check for either coin-op laundry in the hotel or a nearby laundromat.
  • Try to find a hotel with large rooms, which will allow plenty of space to set up a crib or playpen.
  • Make sure the bathroom has a tub, and not just a shower, which seems to be getting more common.
  • Even if the room doesn’t have a full kitchen, it’s useful to at least have a refrigerator, as well as some counter space to make bottle-washing easier.
  • If you’re not planning to bring a travel crib, call the hotel before you book to double-check that they’ll provide one.

3. What should I do to baby-proof our hotel room?

What should I do to baby-proof our hotel room?

  • Ask before you arrive if the hotel offers baby-proofing supplies (or even baby-proofed rooms)
  • Check that all the furniture in the room (including the TV) is stable
  • Check the floor (including under the bed) for anything a baby could put in their mouth: coins, rocks, pills, bottle caps, etc.
  • Put blue painter’s tape over outlets.
  • Tape foam squares over any sharp corners near the floor
  • Tape the toilet lid down
  • Tape any electrical cords to the furniture out of baby’s reach

4. Does my baby need a plane ticket?

Different airlines have varying policies on infant travel, but buying a ticket for children under two years old is usually optional. Without a ticket, the baby has to be held on your lap throughout the flight, and some airlines charge a “lap child fee,” especially for international flights.

If you’re planning to fly with a child in your lap, you should inform the airline in advance. But if you’d rather have a separate seat for your baby, you can book them one at a child’s fare.

5. Which airlines are the most baby-friendly?

Lyric and Kingsley at airport

The best airline for you depends on what’s most important to you when it comes to flying with your baby. These airlines are regularly rated as the most family- and child-friendly:

  • Eithad: Their Flying Nannies are special flight attendants whose job is to help you fly with your baby, and they also offer a bottle-warming service on board.
  • Emirates Airlines: The Dubai airport provides complimentary strollers, and the airline provides children on the plane with an entertainment kit that includes blankets and a fuzzy “We Fly With Me” stuffed animal.
  • Air New Zealand: Their Economy Skycouch connects three seats and converts into a bed for comfort and easier sleeping, and the airline also provides bassinets on board.

6. How much baby food and milk/formula can I bring in my carry-on luggage?

Bring as much as you’ll need for the flight. Baby food, formula, and milk are exempted from the 3-ounce rule for liquids, but you do need to declare it at security so it can be inspected separately. They run a harmless test on excepted baby liquids, and once they’re done they will reseal it and give it back to you.

Even for parents traveling with children, water is still not allowed, so plan to buy it or bring a reusable filtered water bottle to fill up once you’ve passed through security.

7. How can I help my baby sleep on the plane?

How can I help my baby sleep on the plane?

Parents planning on using a bassinet, book a front-row seat if possible to make sure there’s plenty of space. Consider bringing a  sleep sack  to keep them more comfortable and a blanket or scarf to drape over the bassinet and block out light. And of course, bring their pacifier and any favorite toys. Feed your baby during take-off, which will help pop their ears, reduce discomfort, and calm them down.

8. How many diapers do I need to bring on a trip?

A good rule of thumb is to bring one diaper per hour of flight or car time, but it’s always a good idea to bring some extras beyond that, just in case.

9. Can I go camping with a baby?

If you’ve never been camping before, this might not be the best time to get into it.

Otherwise, it’s a good idea to get an okay from your pediatrician first, but many families absolutely go on camping trips with infants, and have plenty of fun! You’ll just want to be more aware of weather, drive time, cleanliness, baby-safe  insect repellent , and supplies, and it probably goes without saying that your baby likely won’t sleep through the night in a tent.

10. What are the best places to travel with a baby?

What are the best places to travel with a baby?

Depending on your travel preferences, beach destinations and national parks can make for great baby-friendly getaways. They tend to be mellow and allow for a lot of flexibility with your schedule and activities.

Alternatively, all-inclusive resorts make things easy and will usually provide all the amenities you need – plus they tend to be VERY fun!

Of course, a staycation or a visit to family or friends are good options, too, and will probably feel a little more familiar to you and baby.

11. What kinds of things are required when flying with a baby? Do I have to have a special seatbelt?

YES, you do need a special seatbelt for toddlers and up to a certain weight. Babies will likely need their own carseat, or you can typically hold them in your lap. If the airline doesn’t require you to purchase a ticket for a lap-child, this is a great way to save money as long as you’re comfortable holding your little one the whole time.

In instances like this it’s handy to have a  baby sling  which can be tightened to hold baby close, or loosened to act as a lap-cradle to relieve your back and arms while baby sleeps.

Best Baby Travel Systems (Stroller Car Seat Combos) 2022

When it comes to buying baby equipment, you would benefit from investing in multi-functional products. This way, you are not left with a million products your child has outgrown and have no use for. Versatile long lasting products, especially ones that go together, are extremely useful. The best baby travel systems combine a stroller and car seat so that you can move between places like your cars, or playgrounds with ease.

A travel system or a travel system stroller and car seat combo can help you kill two birds with one stone. You'll be getting both an infant car seat and a stroller with one buy.  Not to mention it's also more cost-effective. Which brings us to the next question- "What is the best travel system to buy?" This comprehensive review of the top baby travel systems will give you some great ideas.

What Is A Baby Travel System?

A travel system is a 2-in-1 combination of an infant car seat and stroller. How? By using a stroller frame that can accommodate both a car seat, toddler seat, and even a bassinet. The highlight of this unit is that allows you to transport your child using the same unit.

Why Buy A Baby Travel System?

Here are some reasons why you should consider investing in a  travel system stroller:

Undisturbed sleep:

Babies tend to wake up when they are being transferred from their car seat to stroller or vice versa. With a travel system, you can attach and detach the carrier with your baby still sleeping in it.

Car seats can be heavy to lug around, and if you have a sleeping baby, you'll want a travel system to keep that baby sleeping!

Economical and saves time and energy:

Think of all the time, energy, and money you save on research and purchase with this 2-in-1 model. A travel system consists of a stroller that grows with your child, giving you value for your money.

Strollers can be quite expensive, though sometimes you might need an ultralight stroller as well as a sturdy stroller for day-to-day use. Many parents end up owning 3 or 4 different strollers!

In short, a travel system is all you need from birth through toddlerhood to transport your little one.

This versatile stroller car seat combo can keep your child safe at all times.  Some models have reclinable seats. This is more suited for newborns as they have poor head and postural control.

Types of Stroller Travel Systems:

Common types of travel systems include:

Lightweight Travel System:

As the name suggests these travel systems weigh light, around 25-30 pounds . Ideally, your stroller must weigh around 15 pounds or less, and the car seat 5 pounds for easy handling. The lightweight factor is what makes these systems appealing for use on public transit and for those with poor arm strength.

Rugged Travel System:

These are ideal for nature lovers who want to take their kids along with them on their hikes.  It has larger wheels that can handle different types of terrain like tracks and gravel,

Jogging Travel Systems:

Runners invest in the jogging travel system. These are light and easy to maneuver. With its easy push feature, you can get back to jogging, with your little one for the company.

But it should be noted that a jogging travel system is different from a jogging stroller . The latter has extra features to keep children safe such as safety tethers, locking front wheels, and brakes. Even so,  some jogging strollers are compatible with car seats and can double up as a travel system.

Deluxe Travel System:

These are high-quality models with features that enhance their durability, versatility, and reliability.

Buying A Travel System:

You can buy a travel system in two ways :

  • As part of a package deal. This is more economical. It also guarantees the compatibility of the car seat and stroller as they belong to the same brand.
  • Create your system. Using adaptors, we can combine individual strollers and car seats from different brands. While this method allows you to mix and match brands, you should know that some brands may not be compatible. Also, it's costlier than getting the 2-in-1 model.

Creating Your Travel System:

When creating a travel system, keep in mind the following factors :

If you are using your car seat, check for its compatibility with your travel system chassis. You might also need to figure out how to fit it onto the chassis. Check to see if you need adaptors to secure the car seat onto the frame. Additionally, consider the:

  • The type of car seat to get. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that you use a rear-facing car seat up to 1 year of age.
  • Seat weight and dimensions and maximum weight recommendations for the child.
  • Compatibility with your car.

Stroller Frame:

Check the stroller dimensions and make sure the car seat fits within the frame. Check to see how many adaptors you will need to install the car seat onto the frame.

Selecting A Travel System:

If you're purchasing a regular travel system, here's what you need to look out for :

Comfort and Safety: Look for models with:

  • A bassinet or carrycot that can serve as an alternate sleeping area for your child outside.
  • Canopies for protection from sun and other weather. You can choose from a wide range of canopies for sun protection. It ranges from full coverage to partial range coverage. Canopies also have a mesh window to increase air circulation and visibility.
  • JPMA safety seal, which indicates that the model adheres to the safety standards. The model must not have received a r ecall notice from either the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association or the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
  • A five-point harness system. The harness helps to secure your baby at all the key points. This includes the shoulders, waist, and between legs, preventing the baby from sliding, or falling out.

Dimensions: The car seat must fit the baby until they are 32 inches tall or weigh 35 pounds. Strollers must accommodate children until they are around 50 pounds. Checking the height and weight limit of the unit can help you determine its period of usefulness.

Frame : Choose a model with a small lightweight foldable frame for easy storage and transport.

Ease of use: The model must be easy to install, and use. You're less likely to use a model that is difficult to open or fold, or takes up time when you reattach the seat to the base. Choose units with a LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children). This enables easy attachment and detachment of the car seat from the base and stroller frame.

Purpose: This can influence your choice of a system. For use on uneven terrain, you will need a model that has large, lockable, swiveling front wheels. For a smooth ride, you must choose between an air-filled, foam-filled tire, or models with a suspension system. Unlike foam-filled tires, air-filled tires require refilling.

Customer reviews: Choose a model with high customer ratings and safety ratings. It can give you a better idea of the pros, cons, and worth of the model in question.

Customer Support : Buying a product from a reputable company and with good customer service is invaluable when it comes to returning damaged or incorrect products. Also, ensure that the product has a warranty or return policy in place. This will protect you in case of receiving a damaged product.

The Chicco Bravo Trio travel system is the most sought-after model at present. Why? Because it ticks all the boxes on our list. It is versatile and doubles as either a car seat or stroller. You can use it right until your child's toddler years, as it can accommodate a weight of 4-50 pounds.

Made out of aluminum the model is both sturdy and lightweight. It has an innovative one-hand fold to help you single-handedly fold the unit. Once folded, self-prop the model or store it away in your trunk.

About safety, the Chicco system comes with excellent safety features. It has a 5-point harness system for securing the child and a LATCH system for secure attachment of infant seats onto the base. Energy-absorbing foam and side-impact protection reduce the impact of a collision. Its front swivel wheels (with suspension) and a one-touch brake system make it easy to maneuver the unit.

If you own the Chicco KeyFit 30 infant car seat, you can easily install it onto the stroller frame and create your DIY travel system.

baby travel vagn

  • Ideal for growing families
  • Durable and easy to use
  • Efficient safety features
  • Heavier model

Price $$$$

If you’re into sleek and elegant designs, the UPPAbaby Mesa may interest you. Although pricey, bear in mind that the cost is inclusive of the VISTA V2 stroller and Mesa infant car seat. And both these products are high-quality products on their own.

The VISTA V2 is easy to install as it has a LATCH system, with an auto-tightening feature. The adjustable reclining base comes with level indicators to help you position the baby at the right height. It has a sliding shoulder harness for smooth, and quick positioning of the harness on the child.

Not to mention the other design features that add to its appeal. These include the breathable merino wool covering on the seat, high back, and deep footrest,  large adjustable canopy for adequate sun protection, and mesh windows for air circulation.

As for safety, the UPPAbaby VISTA is equipped with energy-absorbing foam for side-impact protection; shock-absorbing front and rear suspension wheels to handle rough terrain, and soft tires for a  comfortable ride.

The best part, this model is designed with multiple configuration options especially for growing families. The seat systems allow for two selections, forward or parent facing, and can recline into a flat position. You can use the reversible seating system with a carriage, toddler seat, or car seat and it can be doubled to include two children. That’s right, with the VISTA V2, you can double the car seats, toddler seats, and many more.

Our Verdict: The UPPAbaby VISTA V2 is definitely an expensive buy, but if you are particular about aesthetics along with functionality, then this is the best aesthetically designed model.

Evenflo Pivot Xpand Modular Travel System :

baby travel vagn

  • Safety features that reduce the risk of injury.
  • Convertible model, into a double stroller
  • No need for adaptors
  • Heavy and bulky.
  • Thin tires.
  • Shoulder harness adjustment is difficult.
  • Fails to accommodate for child height.

The Evenflo Pivot Xpand Travel system is ideal for those looking for a double stroller at affordable pricing. Although the UPPAbaby is equally useful, it is way more expensive. That doesn’t mean the Evenflo Xpand is sub-par.

No indeed. In fact, this system combines the unique Evenflo SafeMax infant car seat with the Pivot Xpand stroller system. Add in super-rich features like adjustable handlebars (3 positions), self-standing fold, front swivel wheels, rear-wheel suspension, and 22 different modes and functions,  you have an efficient, effective travel system in hand.

The multiple configuration options enable this model to double up as a stroller using both the infant car seat and toddler seat, ergo its name ‘the Xpand system.’ That’s not all, it has a reversible (forward and parent facing), adjustable seat, with multiple recline positions making this unit ideal for newborns. Secondly, this is one model that allows for car seat attachment without any adaptor. How? The adaptors are inbuilt into the system, therefore eliminating the extra cost of purchasing additional ones. Let’s not forget the ample storage space (2 feet) under the seat, cup holders, large canopies for sun protection, peek-a-boo windows for increased visibility, and the thick padding and soft fabric that add to the convenience factor of the unit.

As for safety features, the Evenflo Pivot is one of the few travel systems that has been roll-over tested. Besides side-impact protection features, it has an anti-bound bar to reduce the impact of rotational forces preventing injuries in a frontal collision, and a flip-flop-friendly rear brake to safely lock the model in place.

Our Verdict: With its integrated belt lock system, multiple base positions and recline indicator, the Evenflo Pivot system is the best affordable double travel system stroller. With this model, you can be assured that your child is safe and secure in their transportations.

Britax B-Lively & B-Safe 35 Travel System:

baby travel vagn

  • Prioritizes safety of the child
  • Easily adjustable harness
  • Easy maintenance
  • Basic without accessories
  • Shoulder space is less.
  • Lacks an anti-rebound bar

The Britax B-Lively is a simple model designed specifically for its function, to transport children safely. And that it does well! The system is inclusive of the Britax B-Safe 35 infant car seat, a B-Lively stroller, and adaptors. It provides maximum child protection, especially their head, neck, and torso, using a layer of side impact protection, crash energy-absorbing base, and a v-shaped tether that minimizes seat rotation.

It utilizes the LATCH system to secure and tighten the car seat to the base and has a harness release button to loosen harness straps easily. While the car seat is steel reinforced to keep it more stabilized, the stroller frame is made with aluminum and is lightweight and sturdy.

The Britax B-Lively offers comfort to the child through its all-wheel suspension system and 3-wheel design for smooth journeys, UV50 canopy for weather protection, ventilation window pockets for increased air circulation, peek-a-boo window for checking on the child, a near-flat infinite recline seat. For parents, the benefits include the one-handed quick fold, lightweight frame for easy maneuvering, large storage basket with front access for conveniently storing the baby’s essentials.

The covers are removable and washable and you can attach the car seating using the car seat adaptors one for each side.

Our Verdict: Sometimes safety 1st is our motto and in such cases, the Britax B-Lively with B-Safe car seat is the best safe high-quality system we need for our kids.

baby travel vagn

  • Removable and cleanable fabrics
  • Easy maneuvering as lightweight
  • Safety features
  • Difficult to install the car seat onto the base.

This 5-in-1 Modular Travel system includes the Mico Max infant car seat, Zelia Max stroller, and the car seat base. Designed for both safety and comfort the Maxi-Cosi is equipped with a big inflated side impact protection, an anti-rebound bar, EPP energy-absorbing foam. Being made with soft-textured fabrics, the model is quite comforting for the kids.

With reversible (forward and parent facing) reclinable seat, removable bumper bar, extendable canopy which has an additional flip-out visor for added protection from the weather, mesh peek-a-boo windows to foster connection and increase ventilation.

Lockable swivel all-terrain wheel and all-wheel suspension help to keep the ride smooth.

Our Verdict: Although it lacks too many bells and whistles, the Maxi-Cosi is enterprising enough to make its presence felt. The fact that it has washable fabric along with safety and convenient features, makes a huge case for this model, especially since we know how messy and dirty things can get with kids.

Disadvantages Of The Travel System:

While there are many benefits to using the travel system, there are some cons too, such as:

  • These systems are heavier and bulkier and are more difficult to transfer from in and out of the car, and maneuver on uneven roads, and narrow tight spaces like grocery aisles.
  • You need to buy a front-facing infant car seat, once your baby outgrows the rear-facing one.
  • You will need to buy multiple units (car seat and seat base), if you have different cars, to cut down on time and energy required to unhook and set up the unit each time you use a different car.

Tips For Safe Use:

While it is completely safe to use travel systems for your child, here are some additional safety tips to be aware of:

  • Try and ascertain that the model is compatible with your car before purchasing it.
  • When assembling the unit, make sure that you use all parts. It is there in the package for a reason.
  • Make sure that the car seat is correctly aligned on the seat base or stroller frame before moving, to avoid accidents.
  • Check for its expiration date. Some models have an expiration date set after 6 years from the time they are launched. It's good to check this so that you know your product won't expire before your child outgrows its use. Additionally, older models may not adhere to the latest safety standards and may lack the necessary safety features.
  • Do not use a travel system as the main sleeping area for your child.

Second Hand Travel Systems:

While it's alright to accept or purchase certain second-hand products, when it comes to travel systems, this is not advised! Only because it might not be safe for your child, especially if it was

  • Involved in an accident.
  • Misused by the previous owners.
  • Has faulty parts or that which do not align properly due to wear and tear.
  • Expired warranty, which makes the cost of replacing parts high.

If we’ve been successful in convincing you of the advantages of having a travel system over a standard stroller car seat combo, the next step would be to find your unit. For this, you can use our comprehensive travel system guide to compare different models and find your fit. Or go through our list of travel systems, already reviewed to save you time, and find the one which suits your needs the best.

82 Baby Travel Essentials You Won’t Regret Packing

' src=

Are you wondering what baby traveling essentials you need to pack when you travel with your baby? This post is all about the baby travel essentials that will make your journey easier!

As a mom of three, I’ve traveled extensively with my babies. I’ve tried a lot of baby gear and determined just what actually is essential when traveling with baby.

Because babies do require an astonishing amount of stuff, but you don’t have to pack the entire nursery when you travel.

So I put together this comprehensive baby packing list of all the necessary items for traveling with a baby!

Preparing to travel with an infant or baby can feel a little overwhelming for new parents, but this list of must-have baby items for travel will help you get ready for an incredible trip with your little one.

Customize this list of baby travel gear based on where you’re going, how old your baby is, and how you plan to travel.

Here’s my list of the essentials for traveling with a baby. Consider it the ultimate baby packing list!

baby travel vagn

Before we get started…

If you’ve just added a baby to your family, you don’t need me to tell you that nothing is the same as it was before your little one arrived.

Travel will also be different.

Here are some key infant travel tips, now that you’re traveling with a baby:

  • Direct flights are worth it. You’ll want to avoid a layover at all costs.
  • If you must have a layover, allow plenty of time to get through the airport with your baby.
  • Check your bags . You’re going to have to carry enough baby stuff to get you through the trip–plus the baby. Don’t worry about trying to carry on the suitcase.
  • Keep the gas tank full . I mean this literally if you’re on a road trip. Fill up with gas whenever you stop, so that if baby falls asleep you don’t have to stop to refuel and wake them up. But figuratively as well: be sure you get enough food and rest to make it through your journey.
  • Adjust your expectations . You will not see everything at your destination. Traveling will take longer. You will not travel spontaneously. You’ll need to be very patient with your little one and yourself. Your vacation might not be exactly restful.  But it will be worth it!

Essentials for Traveling with a Baby

baby travel vagn

6. Dirty Diaper Bags

When changing diapers on the go, disposable bags for dirty diapers are really handy.

These diaper sacks have easy-close ties and a light lavender scent to mask that dirty diaper smell.

If you’re dealing with a particularly messy diaper change, a plastic bag helps to contain the mess (and smell).

baby travel vagn

When diaper changes demand a new outfit, use the Bumkins waterproof wet bag to hold wet or dirty baby clothes.

The mess will stay inside the bag until you (finally) reach your destination.

In the meantime, you won’t have to worry about baby’s dirty clothes contaminating everything else in the diaper bag!

You can wash and reuse the bag many, many times!

8. Anti-bacterial Wipes

When you’re traveling and changing diapers, you might not always have access to soap and water.

Be prepared with antibacterial wipes.

Boogie antibacterial wipes will clean away dirt, bacteria, and germs. The gentle, hypoallergenic formula with aloe will moisturize your skin.

These are perfect for keeping clean when you’re on the go.

  • Extra outfit for parent: Pack yourself a change of clothes, just in case!

  • Your favorite snacks: Be prepared, because you don’t want to be hungry when traveling with baby.
  • Charger for every device: Make sure you’re able to charge your tablet, phone, headphones, and any other electronics
  • Power Bank : You need to be able to charge your devices if you don’t have access to power.
  • Adapter for international travel : So you can charge your devices when you land.

Essential questions about traveling with a baby

How soon can you travel with a newborn .

This is really a question for your pediatrician. Your baby’s doctor will want to be sure that your little one has a strong enough immune system to be exposed to people outside of your immediate family.

A birthing parent should allow plenty of time to recover from the birth before taking on any strenuous travel.

If you want to fly with your newborn baby, your pediatrician will probably recommend waiting until baby is four to six weeks old. You should also check with the airline to see if there is a minimum age for babies to fly.

If you want to travel by car with a newborn, you pediatrician will probably give the OK for short car trips right away.

Check with your pediatrician about when you can travel with a newborn!

How will my baby adjust to jet-lag?

Let’s be honest, most babies are on their own schedule anyway. If you’re traveling, don’t worry about sticking to a strict feeding or sleeping schedule. Be flexible and let your baby’s cues guide you.

What should baby wear to travel?

On travel days, dress your baby in comfortable clothes made of natural, soft, breathable fabrics (like cotton).

Bring extra socks to keep toes warm. And pack a light jacket or long-sleeved top, as well as blankets, in case it’s cold.

Baby bassinet in airplane

Should I buy an airline ticket for my baby?

It depends! Here are your options:

Infant bassinet

Major airlines offer infant bassinets on certain international flights, but only a few bassinets are available on each flight.

You must reserve a bassinet in advance. (Just one of many reservations to make before traveling! )

If you want to request an in-flight bassinet, do so when you book your flight–book directly with the airline. And even with a reservation, you are not guaranteed to get a bassinet.

Generally, bassinets are for babies weighing up to 20 pounds. And you will have to hold your infant on take-off and landing, as well as during any turbulence.

Hold your baby

You don’t have to buy a ticket for children under age 2, but you will have to hold your baby for the entire flight. You can wear your baby in a baby carrier instead of just holding baby in your arms.

Upgrade to Business or First Class

If you want to hold your baby, but don’t relish the idea of being crammed in economy with a baby on your lap, you could buy yourself a business or first class ticket.

You’ll have more room for yourself and baby, so a long flight won’t seem quite so bad.

Buy baby a seat

If you want to put the baby in a baby car seat you will need to purchase baby’s own seat. Flying in a car seat is the safest way for baby to travel, because they’ll be strapped in on take off and landing, and if there’s any turbulence.

On long-haul flights, I would either buy baby their own seat or fly business class or first class and hold baby.

Note that on international flights, you will need to buy a ticket for your baby.

Where should I sit on the plane?

Consider reserving an aisle seat so you can easily get up and walk the aisle to soothe your baby.

If you request a bassinet on your flight, you will have to sit in a bulkhead seat.

Consider buying travel insurance just in case baby gets sick.

changing table on airplane that folds down over the toilet in the plane lavatory.

Can I change diapers on a plane?

Yes, changing tables are available in at least one lavatory on every plane.

Ask the flight attendant where the nearest changing table is. There will be at least one on your plane, but there might not be a changing table in every lavatory.

Never change baby’s diaper in the main cabin.

How many diapers should I bring on a flight?

Pack one diaper for every hour of travel–at least! If you pack  two diapers for every expected hour of travel , you should have enough to get through flight delays and unexpected diaper emergencies! Personally, I preferred having too many diapers rather than risking not having enough!

If you don’t want to pack a trip’s worth of diapers in your suitcase, research the brands of diapers and formula available at your destination, especially if baby has any sensitivities.

Baby sitting in car seat for children and looking in the mirror

How often should I stop when driving with a baby?

Heading out on the open road with a baby is easier than flying. You’ll have more room for all your baby gear, you set your own schedule, and you aren’t dealing with crowds of other travelers.

Expect to stop every hour or two when traveling with a baby. You’ll need to allow time for diaper changes, feedings, and snuggles.

Parents should stretch their legs, get a snack, and perhaps swap drivers. It can be challenging to entertain babies on road trips, so it’s a good idea to expect the journey to take double the amount of time it usually would.

Where should I travel with my baby?

Here are some suggestions of places to travel with your infant.

Travel within the US with a baby

Choose a destination that is relatively close: either within a three to four hour drive or a direct flight.

International travel with baby

If you want to travel abroad, choose a destination that you’ve been to before. If the city is familiar to you and you know how to get around, you’ll have an easier time navigating with baby. You also won’t feel as much pressure to see all the sites.

There are a lot of features to think through if you’re considering purchasing a stroller wagon, so it’s helpful to do some research before you buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Babylist’s picks for the best stroller wagons, best all-terrain stroller wagon.

Veer All-Terrain Cruiser Wagon - All-Terrain Cruiser Wagon - $649.00.

Veer All-Terrain Cruiser Wagon - All-Terrain Cruiser Wagon

  • Tackles any terrain, even snow and sand
  • Compatible with many infant car seats
  • Tons of custom add-ons

What Our Experts Say

The Veer Cruiser is the stroller wagon that started it all. This high-end cruiser with oversized tires and front-wheel suspension is the best all-terrain stroller wagon. You can push or pull it on anything from pavement, grass, and gravel to snow and even sand. That’s not the case for all stroller wagons, so if you hope to use your wagon on the beach, on a gravel path or just about anywhere else, the Veer is one of the best options.

The other Veer standout? Customization. There are tons of add-on accessories, including custom sidewall kits and canopies, a nap system , a comfy toddler seat , a storage basket and even a Switchback Seat that’s interchangeable with other Veer gear.

The Cruiser holds two riders up to 55 pounds each and is compatible with an infant car seat ( adapters sold separately for most major brands), so even the littlest family member can hop on for a ride. And it folds flat so it fits in most trunks when broken down.

What’s Worth Considering

The Cruiser is expensive, especially when you start adding on extras. You’ll need to take off all of the accessories when folding it. It pulls easily, but navigating tighter turns while pushing it does take a bit of effort (and practice).

Looking to haul up to four kids? Check out Veer’s newest stroller wagon, the Cruiser Wagon XL .

What Babylist Parents Say

“It has been great to load up with a picnic and take to the botanic gardens for the afternoon or throw our lawn games in and stroll down to the park on the weekends. We currently have the car seat adapter because our little one is only 2 months old but I can already tell that we are going to be using this a lot longer than our stroller.” -Whitney

Best Affordable Stroller Wagon

Evenflo Pivot Xplore All-Terrain Stroller Wagon - Wayfarer - $349.99.

Evenflo Pivot Xplore All-Terrain Stroller Wagon - Wayfarer

  • More affordable price point
  • Comes with lots of accessories
  • Folds like a stroller

Not looking to drop a small fortune on a stroller wagon? The Evenflo Pivot Xplore is a solid option that comes with lots of accessories and won’t set you back quite as much as other stroller wagons on the market.

This two-person ride has large tires that work on all types of terrain and the wagon boasts a flip handle that takes you from push to pull in seconds. There are several key accessories included, so you won’t have to shell out extra money for canopies, a snack tray or a storage basket, a nice perk. And the fold on the Xplore is also worth a shoutout. It folds more like a stroller, and you can leave all the accessories on when it’s time to pack up unlike with some other stroller wagons, a major perk.

The Pivot can accommodate an infant car seat, but only if Evenflo makes it. This stroller wagon can handle sand, but not as well as others. There aren’t a ton of accessories available.

“This is such a great wagon! It has definitely become one of our go-to strollers/travel systems. We used it with the infant seat attachment when my son was a newborn and it was very sturdy. My son now sits in the wagon and loves being in it. It folds down to a great size and doesn’t take up the entire trunk. I love the push and pull options of the handle.” -Jessica

Best Even More Affordable Stroller Wagon

Baby Trend Expedition 2-in-1 Stroller Wagon PLUS - Ultra Gray - $299.99.

Baby Trend Expedition 2-in-1 Stroller Wagon PLUS - Ultra Gray

  • Comes with universal infant car seat adapter
  • Lots of cool accessories included
  • Hideaway pull handle

Baby Trend’s Expedition Plus is another affordable stroller wagon option that’s worth a look as an option that packs a lot into a much smaller price tag than many of its competitors. It’s a pull-or-push two-seater wagon that works for either two children over six months or one baby and one older child if you pop on the included universal infant car seat adapter. (The adapter works with a ton of the best infant car seat brands, but be sure to double-check yours before you buy.)

One of the coolest features of this stroller wagon is the hideaway pull handle. It’s stored under the body of the wagon floor and pulls out when needed–and slips away when it isn’t. The Expedition Plus also includes a mat that transforms the wagon bed into a soft surface perfect for napping or chilling. (The same mat also folds into cushions to make the seats extra comfy.) We also love the flip-over storage basket and snack tray, extra-large canopy with a mosquito net and the easy fold.

For an even more affordable stroller wagon, check out Baby Trend’s Expedition 2-in-1 . It has fewer frills than the Plus but still rocks all the same functionality, and it’s significantly cheaper.

Easiest to Push Stroller Wagon

BOB Gear Renegade Stroller Wagon - Nightfall With Canopies - $749.99.

BOB Gear Renegade Stroller Wagon - Nightfall With Canopies

  • Incredibly easy to push, turn and steer
  • Holds up to three kids
  • Innovative open and fold

If you’re hoping that jogging-stroller-favorite brand BOB took everything they know about the mechanics of suspension and maneuverability into account when designing their first-ever stroller wagon, we’re happy to report that they did—and the result is one pretty awesome piece of baby gear.

Many stroller wagons on our best-of list have exceptional maneuverability, but the Renegade truly excels. After spending only a few minutes with this sturdy, well-designed wagon stroller, the first thing we noticed was how incredibly easy it was to push, pull and steer. The Renegade is certainly big, but it doesn’t “drive” that way. Pushing and pulling the wagon was super smooth, and turns—even sharper ones—weren’t an issue whatsoever. It handles well on all types of terrain, including sand, thanks to the extra-large rugged tires.

The three-seater configuration is another differentiator we liked. Most stroller wagons either seat two or four kids, while the Renegade seats three: a double bench on one side and a single on the other. It’s not the most compact wagon on our list, but it’s much less bulky (and less intimidating to push around) than many four-seat options. We also like that it comes with two large canopies instead of having to purchase them separately.

One more standout feature to note: the fold. It’s fast and easy, two essentials for any good stroller wagon fold. And the unfold is even better. Simply push a small foot petal and the back seat pops up into place, no hands needed. (You will need hands to pop up the other seat, but it’s still super cool!)

Assembling the Renegade is a bit of a pain. There are a bunch of steps and it takes a bit longer than some of the other stroller wagons on our best-of list. There’s also no option for infants to ride in this wagon, as it doesn’t accept any car seats. Add-on accessories are limited at this time but that may change as the stroller wagon is on the market a bit longer. And it’s on the heavier side as this style of stroller wagons go.

“This wagon lives up to the BOB name and is both functional and stylish. My biggest issue with stroller wagons is how hard they are to push or how bulky they are and somehow this wagon gets it right on both fronts. Literally pushes like a dream in stroller mode, with one hand, while walking the dog- even on rocky terrain! You cannot feel the weight inside the wagon even when loaded down and my 4-year-old and 6-month-old fit easily side by side with room for friends. I was convinced it wouldn’t fit through the doorway but it did with ease! I was also able to fold it one-handed while holding the baby. I especially love that it can be folded with the canopies on and everything doesn’t have to be disassembled.” -hmooney

Best Double Stroller Wagon

WonderFold Wagon W4 Luxe Quad Stroller Wagon (4 Seater) - Volcanic Black - $899.00.

WonderFold Wagon W4 Luxe Quad Stroller Wagon (4 Seater) - Volcanic Black

  • Perfect for large families
  • Tons of high-end, well-designed features like reclining seats, front zippered door and more
  • Large, heavy and expensive

Getting around with three or more children, especially if they’re close in age, can be a challenge. Some double strollers accommodate three kids with the addition of a ride-along board, but storage space is limited and you’re out of luck if all three kiddos want to sit down at the same time. Enter the quad stroller wagon: it’s big on all fronts (size, price point etc.) but a worthwhile investment if you have a big family. It’s also pretty easy to push and steer, even when fully loaded and especially considering the size.

Wonderfold’s Quad Stroller Wagon is a luxury ride for four. There are so many thoughtful features on this wagon that it’s hard to narrow it down. There are four comfy, removable seats that each recline and have magnetic buckles. The wagon’s walls are made from a breathable mesh but also have an extra layer of fabric you can zip down over the mesh for added warmth or privacy. There’s a front zippered door for easy in and out. There’s tons of storage around the entire wagon, including a large zippered front storage basket, and a car seat adapter that offers 360 degree rotation. And the adjustable canopy is huge and provides great shade for all riders.

One other thing to note–this is mainly a push-only wagon. (The vegan leather handlebar adjusts for parents and caregivers of multiple heights, which we love.) There is a separate pull strap included, but it’s not the easiest, especially if you’re maneuvering a full wagon over rough terrain.

There’s no getting around the fact that this wagon is enormous. (Which it needs to be to haul four kids + all their stuff, but it’s still worth noting.) It’s long, wide, heavy (almost 60 lbs!) and just…huge. The wagon is fairly easy to fold, but does take some practice and even when folded takes up a good amount of real estate. (It does stand on its own when folded, though, which is helpful for storage purposes.) And there’s no getting around the price tag, which is also enormous.

Best Stroller Wagon for the Beach

Keenz 7S 2.0 2 Passenger Stroller Wagon - Black - $400.00.

Keenz 7S 2.0 2 Passenger Stroller Wagon - Black

  • Navigates all terrains, including sand
  • Lots of storage
  • Can upgrade to larder wheels

Finding a stroller wagon that works on sand can be tricky; many brands make the claim, but don’t deliver when put to the test. The 2.0 version of the Keenz 7S is a great choice if you’re a beach-loving family. This two-passenger stroller wagon can be pushed or pulled and does really well on all types of terrain, including sand. (We recommend pulling the stroller wagon when on sand.) There’s also a ton of storage, including a built-in cooler, another big plus when you’re planning a beach day and need extra space to stash shovels, s unscreen , a beach tent and more.

A few other thoughtful features of the 7S 2.0 include adjustable handlebars, a lightweight aluminum frame, four-wheel suspension and built-in shades on either side of the canopy that pull down for privacy. And there’s a lot included here like cup holders and a travel/storage cover.

The 7S 2.0 works well as-is on most beaches, but if you’re traveling somewhere with super soft sand, or if you know you’ll be spending a lot of time at the beach, consider upgrading to the All-Terrain Wheel Set . These extra-large, extra-wide wheels make it even easier to maneuver your wagon at the beach.

Also note that there’s no ability to attach an infant car seat to this stroller wagon, and the brand recommends the wagon for babies 12 months and up, a bit higher of an age minimum than most other wagons on our list.

Best Stroller Wagon for Infant and Toddler

Gladly Family Anthem2 2-Seater All-Terrain Wagon Stroller - $499.00.

Gladly Family Anthem2 2-Seater All-Terrain Wagon Stroller

  • Good choice for baby and older child
  • Lots of accessories included
  • XL double canopy

Although not a substitute for a double stroller , a stroller wagon is a good alternative for some families who need to get around with more than one child. If there’s a baby in the mix, a stroller wagon that accommodates an infant car seat and an older child is a must—and this one from Gladly Family does that and more.

This stroller wagon is configured similarly to the Veer in that it has a push/pull handle and folds in on itself for flat storage. With the addition of the car seat adapter (sold separately), it accepts infant car seats from a good selection of brands. It also comes with a lot of accessories for the price, including a large double canopy that zips closed, a stowaway mattress to convert the stroller wagon interior to recline mode, a parent cup holder and storage container, a double snack tray and lots of interior and exterior storage compartments.

When you’re in push mode, navigating tighter turns is tricky and can take some getting used to. The harnesses are three-point instead of five, so they provide a little less support for younger riders.

Best Stroller Wagon for Cities

Joey The Wagon - Black - $689.00.

Joey The Wagon - Black

  • More compact design
  • Push or pull functionality

Stroller wagons are known for a lot of things, but a compact design isn’t generally one of them. While The Wagon certainly isn’t tiny, it’s one of the smaller-scale stroller wagons on our list, which makes it the best choice if you’re a navigating a city or more densely packed areas on the regular.

Folding The Wagon is pretty intuitive, even the first time you do it. Everything folds flat, and it fits in even smaller trunks or stashed away in a city apartment. Need even more room? The wheels pop on and off easily for even more compact storage. And although this wagon is on the cozier side, we like that there’s a footwell to provide some extra legroom for both riders.

In addition to the travel-friendly design (and its really cool good looks), this push-or-pull two-seater stroller wagon has a lot going for it. The oversized tires are one of the wagon’s best features. They’re big and roll well over all types of terrain, sand included. We also love that there’s a snack tray and a cup holder included. If you want to add a car seat adapter or a nap accessory , they’re available as well, just sold separately.

The opening to the built-in storage basket is fairly narrow, so although it holds a decent amount of stuff, you won’t be able to stuff a diaper bag (or anything wider than about four inches or so) inside of it. The canopy is on the smaller side. You need to remove the snack tray and canopy before you fold this stroller wagon. And the handle is on the shorter side, so if you’re taller you may kick the wheels while walking if it’s in push mode.

A stroller wagon is a hybrid of two popular pieces of baby gear: a stroller and a wagon. Featuring the push and maneuverability of a stroller alongside the fun and functionality of a wagon, stroller wagons offer the best of both worlds.

Most stroller wagons have large wheels and a fairly robust suspension system designed to handle both smooth and rough terrain. Many feature both push and pull functionality and, unlike traditional wagons, stroller wagons either fold or break down in some way to make them more compact for portability.

Stroller wagons seat a minimum of two children and sometimes up to four depending on the brand and model. Seating configurations vary; some stroller wagons can accommodate infants (with the addition of an adapter and an infant car seat ) while others work only for older babies and toddlers.

Many stroller wagon brands offer lots of different accessories to customize your ride. From canopies and cup holders to padded toddler seats and even bassinet attachments, there are plenty of add-ons to help you create the stroller wagon that’s perfectly suited for your family’s specific needs.

A stroller wagon isn’t a must-have baby item. But there are certain families that would get lots of use out of one or specific circumstances where owning a stroller wagon may make your life a little bit easier.

A stroller wagon may be right for your family if:

  • You love the outdoors. Most stroller wagons are built for tackling not just sidewalks but all types of terrain: sand, gravel, dirt, grass etc. If you live near a beach, a lake or a trail or you regularly find yourself on outdoor adventures with your kids in tow, a stroller wagon may be for you. (A jogging stroller is another idea to consider here too.)
  • You have a big family. Ever try pushing three kids in a stroller or—gasp—even four? No thanks. A quad stroller wagon is our favorite way to get around with three or more kiddos and all the stuff that comes along with them. (It’s also the best way to get looks of awe and astonishment from passersby, which we also love.)
  • You have a baby and an older child. Do you have a baby and an older child who’s past the stroller stage but not quite down with walking independently one hundred percent of the time? What about a big sibling who does lots of sports and activities on weekends and a little sibling who needs to come along for the ride? A stroller wagon that accommodates an infant car seat can be a good solution for both of these scenarios. It provides fun, easy seating for a big kid, lots of storage and a spot for the little brother or sister to chill.
  • Your kids fight the stroller–but don’t love to walk, either. Kids staging a stroller protest (but then complaining about walking)? A stroller wagon is a fun way to shake things up and convince your little ones to come along for the ride.
  • They’re fun! It sounds simple, but it’s true. Taking a stroller wagon for a spin to the park, the farmer’s market or even just around the block are easy ways to change things up from the regular stroller or carrier routine. It makes getting out of the house with your little ones feel more like an adventure than something to check off of your to-do list.

Not all stroller wagons accommodate infants. Since younger babies can’t sit up on their own, an infant can’t ride in a stroller wagon unless the wagon accepts an infant car seat, usually through the use of adapters that either come with the wagon or can be purchased separately.

Some stroller wagons offer multiple adapter options for different brands of car seats . Others only accept car seats from the same brand, while others don’t accommodate infant car seats at all.

Be sure to check the exact configurations and car seat compatibility before purchasing a stroller wagon if you’re hoping your infant will be able to hitch a ride.

What to Look for in a Stroller Wagon

A stroller wagon is a big purchase. (Both literally and for your wallet!) When choosing the right stroller wagon for you, you’ll want to pay attention to the same features you would when shopping for the best stroller . Consider your family’s needs, the type of environment where you live and how you’re most likely to use your wagon.

These are the features to think through as you decide:

  • Wheels and suspension. Most stroller wagons have large wheels and cushy suspension systems, but some more so than others. Think about where you’ll be using your stroller wagon the most—sand, grass, sidewalks—and make sure the wagon you choose works on that type of terrain. Pro tip: not all stroller wagons perform well on sand, so if you’re hoping to use your stroller wagon at the beach, do your research and choose carefully.
  • Size and portability. All stroller wagons are big, but some are really big. And while all stroller wagons fold, some are much more portable than others. Measure your trunk against the stroller wagon’s folded dimensions to ensure it will fit, and check the weight so you know what you’re up against if you’ll be lifting it often. Check to see if the wheels pop off for easier storage. Research folds to see what feels easiest to you.
  • Infant compatibility. As mentioned above, not all stroller wagons accommodate infant car seats. If that’s a dealbreaker for you, be sure to research which stroller wagons are compatible with which infant car seats.
  • Safety. Look for features like an easy-to-use brake/wheel lock and safety harnesses (either three-point or five-point). Also pay attention to a stroller wagon’s weight limit, especially if you’ll be using it for more than one child or hope to use it as your little one(s) get older.
  • Cost. Stroller wagons don’t come cheap. If you plan on using your stroller wagon a lot, or if budget isn’t a concern, you may be able to splurge. If not, a less expensive stroller wagon may be a better choice for you.
  • Durability. Do you want a wagon you can take outside and hose down if (when) it gets dirty? Will you be using your stroller wagon for years through multiple children, or just for a year or two? Factor all of these things in when choosing a stroller wagon that’s more or less durable.
  • Accessories. Want to customize your ride? Some stroller wagon brands offer tons of extras like canopies, cup holders, a snack tray, custom sidewalls, extra storage…the list goes on.

Can you take a stroller wagon on a plane?

Each airline has its own specific rules around traveling with a stroller, so it’s tricky to find an exact answer to this question.

Through our research and experience, most strollers, including stroller wagons, must fit a specific set of criteria to be checked at the gate before boarding the airplane. American Airlines , for example, specifies that in order to gate-check a stroller, it must fold and be under 20 pounds. Jet Blue , however, doesn’t state specific requirements, only that a stroller does not count toward carry-on or checked bag allowance and may be checked when you arrive at the airport or gate-checked at the jetbridge.

Is it advised to roll up to the gate with a 50-pound four-passenger stroller wagon and expect to slip right on by? Likely not. But if your stroller wagon meets your airline’s requirements (and if you happen upon friendly gate-check agents that day), it may be an option.

We recommend always reaching out to your airline first to discuss their stroller policy before packing your bags.

Are stroller wagons allowed at Disney World?

Disney theme parks and water parks have very specific rules around what types of strollers are allowed and which aren’t—and stroller wagons don’t make the cut. Strollers larger than 31” in width and 52” in length are not permitted, and neither are stroller wagons.

What Makes a Great Baby Travel Bag?

Every parent has their own list of most important things, but when it comes to choosing the best baby travel bag, some universal factors ring true for all. Here’s what separates the good from the great:

Space & Organization

Gone are the days when parents settled for any large bag. Now, ample space is a must, but so is organization. Lots of pockets, both exterior and interior, help segregate baby’s needs from your personal items.

Extra pockets each have a purpose to hold:  baby wipes , bottle pockets,  burp cloths , a change of clothes, cell phone, and even  insulated pockets  for keeping milk or water at the right temperature. It’s all about making sure every essential has its own spot.

Durability & Material

The best diaper bags aren’t just a one-trip wonder. They stand up to countless outings, including airplane travel, spills, dirty diaper explosions, and more. Opting for bags with waterproof material or easy-to-clean material can be a lifesaver. If you’re into sustainable options, vegan leather is both stylish and cruelty-free.

Accessibility & Ease of Use

Time is of the essence when you’re out with your baby. Bags that offer easier access with well-placed zippers or magnetic closures can be a great choice. Features like stroller straps or a trolley sleeve add to the ease of use, especially during travels.

Comfort & Style

Comfort shouldn’t be overlooked. Shoulder straps that evenly distribute weight, or backpack straps for hands-free convenience, can make all the difference. And of course, aesthetics matter too. If you love vibrant different colors, a unisex design, or the classic elegance of vegan leather, there’s a bag out there to match your vibe.

Versatility & Extras

Some bags are more than just diaper bags. They double up as a work bag, have padded laptop pockets, or even an included changing pad. These multi-functional features enhance the bag’s versatility, giving you more bang for your buck.

In the realm of baby travel bags, the options are vast. But, remembering these essential factors will guide you to a purchase that’s both practical and chic. After all, a great baby travel bag isn’t just about carrying baby stuff—it’s about enhancing your entire parenting journey.

Utilize Every Pocket

Your bag has plenty of pockets for a reason. Use them! Designate specific pockets for specific items. Perhaps side pockets for water bottles and insulated pockets for warm baby food. When everything has a place, you’ll save time and avoid the hassle of rummaging.

Keep It Clean

With spills and messes inevitable, choose a bag with waterproof or easy-to-clean material. Regular cleaning prevents stubborn stains and maintains the bag’s appearance. Quick tip: always have  wet wipes  and a  wet bag handy for immediate clean-ups!

Rotate Items

Depending on the trip, the contents of your bag might change. Short outings might not require as much stuff as longer trips. Regularly check and rotate items to match your needs, ensuring you’re not carrying unnecessary weight.

Maintenance is Key

To increase the longevity of your bag, care for it. This means occasionally checking zippers, cleaning stroller clips, and ensuring shoulder straps remain robust. A well-maintained bag not only lasts longer but also ensures the safety of your baby’s items.

Personalize for Convenience

Add a personal touch to enhance efficiency. This could be color-coded interior pockets or labels, making it easier to locate items. Additionally, using smaller items like pouches or wet bags can further organize and segregate contents.

Getting the most out of your baby travel bag isn’t rocket science. It’s about smart choices, regular maintenance, and a sprinkle of personal touch. With these tips, you’ll be set to make any outing smooth and efficient.

Full-Time Travel with Kids: Embracing Van Life

It’s a fact. Traveling with kids can be one of the most rewarding experiences for a family, but it’s also extremely tiring, and sometimes the logistics add unnecessary stress. However, embracing van life while traveling with young children adds an extra layer of freedom and flexibility.

And we are proof of that. For my family and me, our trusty 35-year-old Ford Transit Rimor motorhome, affectionately known as Koala (that’s the model name, we believe!), has been our home away from home on many memorable trips since we bought it two and a half years ago.

From the enchanting landscapes of Northern Morocco to the Balearic Islands, the picturesque villages of Portugal, and across ten other countries in Central and Southwest Europe, our journey has been nothing short of extraordinary with Koala by our side.

baby travel vagn

After gathering some experience over the past few years, here’s a look into this lifestyle, including tips for traveling full-time or for long periods with kids, and how we ensure we stay healthy on the road. Let’s dive right in!

The Van Life Experience

Embracing van life: our trusted ford transit.

Koala, our vintage Ford Transit, might be over three decades old, but it has proven to be an incredibly reliable travel companion . We like to call it ‘vintage’ IYKYK.

baby travel vagn

Equipped with just the essentials (but missing none of them from the heating system to boiler, three beds, two tables, full kitchen, and bathroom), our motorhome is surprisingly spacious, providing us with comfort and convenience on the road. And was affordable enough to make it a simple decision to take back in the day!

Even when these vehicles are very overpriced these days – especially since the pandemic hit, when they experienced a sort of boom and prices skyrocketed, and Koala was the perfect example of that, I felt comfy knowing the money invested would be quickly recovered given our proven love for travel and the rising prices everywhere else in the travel industry.

The charm of van life lies in its simplicity—having your home with you, no matter where you go. It allows us the freedom to explore at our own pace, making impromptu stops and adjusting our route as needed, weather permitting.

Memorable Van Life Trips

baby travel vagn

Most of our journeys since we bought Koala have been to nearby destinations. Although we had visited most of these countries before—often multiple times—exploring them by motorhome offered a new and unique experience.

Northern Morocco: Our adventure in Northern Africa was a vivid tapestry of vibrant markets, stunning landscapes, and rich culture. From the bustling streets of Tangier to the serene beauty of Chefchaouen’s hilly backdrop outside its blue-washed old town, Morocco offered a blend of excitement and relaxation.

Traveling through the northern part of the country—our fourth time there—with our baby daughter (she was 11 months old at the time) is something we’ll remember forever, and Koala handled the rugged terrain like a champ.

Portugal: Portugal’s diverse landscape has already provided the perfect backdrop for several van life journeys . We reveled in the scenic beauty of the northern coast, relaxed on the beaches of the Alentejo and Algarve regions, and explored the historic charm of Lisbon during the New Year’s Eve festivities.

Even though we’ve visited this country around 50 times or more (it’s that close to our base), each stop brought something new, and Koala never failed to be our cozy retreat after a day of exploring.

We’ve taken more trips in our home country than we can count.

However, the longest and most significant ones have taken us to:

  • Catalonia’s Costa Brava, Mallorca in the Balearic Islands (where ferry rides are always an adventure!), and the Mediterranean coast from Valencia to Cabo de Gata.
  • Andalusia, moreover the provinces of Huelva and Cadiz, is always great for lazy beach days, good weather, great food, and lively towns.
  • Asturias and Picos de Europa, neighboring Galicia, and ideal for exploring by van.
  • The Pyrenees, with its many national parks and valleys, along with other carefully chosen destinations in Northern Spain.
  • Galicia. If you follow us on social media (here’s our Instagram account for those who don’t but are interested), you know we never miss an opportunity for an overnight getaway, a long weekend, or even longer explorations of our backyard. We’re still searching for another beautiful destination with as many van-life-friendly spots as our beloved Galicia!

Central and Southwest Europe: Our recent 30-day motorhome journey through ten European countries —France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, and Spain—was a whirlwind of unforgettable experiences.

From the D-Day beaches of Normandy in Northern France to the stunning Alpine landscapes in Switzerland, every destination shined on its own.

That’s the magic of the old continent!

Staying Healthy on the Road

Importance of health insurance for traveling families.

baby travel vagn

Now first things first. One of the most important aspects of traveling full-time with kids is ensuring that everyone is safe and the whole family has comprehensive health insurance. At least for us, having the right coverage gives us peace of mind and allows us to enjoy our adventures without worrying about potential medical issues.

In the past, we had our fair dose of unexpected issues on the road and a long time ago we decided it was time to start packing insurance on all our trips to avoid hefty bills and lots of time sorting the medical systems wherever we might be.

Anyway, we’re excited to introduce you to SafetyWing’s latest addition: Nomad Health .

Specifically designed for expats, digital nomads , and slow travelers like us, this insurance covers over 175 countries. So whether you’re hiking in the hills near Chefchaouen or exploring Belgium cities, Nomad Health provides access to quality healthcare wherever you are.

baby travel vagn

Nomad Health offers extensive coverage, including hospital stays, doctor visits, and even mental health support. You can also add dental and vision coverage by paying a premium fee, which is particularly useful for families. The continuity of coverage is a major benefit, allowing us to travel across multiple countries without having to switch insurance plans. For more details on how Nomad Health can benefit your travels, check out their coverage options .

Managing Health and Wellness While Traveling

baby travel vagn

But, let me tell you, staying healthy on the road involves more than just having good insurance. That’s why on top of having great insurance in place, we also focus on maintaining a balanced lifestyle as much as possible (we are only humans after all!) by incorporating regular hikes and walks as well as wild swims and some other occasional outdoor sports into our routine while traveling.

That way and although I wish I had more time for things like yoga, we can indulge in stretching regularly and simply moving our bodies as much as we can daily, which helps keep us active. Babywearing our daughter doubles as a workout and a bonding experience, and cooking half of our meals in Koala allows us to maintain a nutritious diet without too many processed foods.

Babymoons: Traveling While Pregnant

baby travel vagn

France Road Trip: From Galicia to Mont Saint-Michel

Before our daughter was born, we embarked on a memorable babymoon road trip through France. Traveling while pregnant was an adventure in itself. The journey from Galicia to Mont Saint-Michel was fast-paced, filled with stops at charming towns and landmarks.

The highlight was visiting Mont Saint-Michel, a magical island commune with breathtaking views. Despite the challenges of traveling during pregnancy, the trip was a fantastic way to bond and create lasting memories before our family expanded.

Spain Adventures: Exploring Locally

Extremadura was the destination of our second babymoon , which took place in the 8th month (3rd trimester). I was feeling alright after a bumpy ride in the first trimester, so we decided to make the most of our last days without a child.

Once our daughter arrived, we continued our love for van life with frequent road trips within Spain as I shared before. From the stunning landscapes of the Pyrenees to the raw beaches of Cabo de Gata, each trip offered new experiences. Koala became our mobile base, allowing us to explore Spain’s diverse regions while keeping our little one comfortable and entertained.

Tips for Traveling with Kids

baby travel vagn

Preparing for the Journey

Traveling with a toddler requires some extra planning. Packing essentials like toys, snacks, and comfort items is crucial. We’ve found that having a well-stocked motorhome makes life on the road much easier . Preparing Koala for comfort and safety involves ensuring that it’s equipped with a secure sleeping area, enough drinkable water, ample storage, and a well-functioning kitchen for meals to start with.

Keeping the Kids Happy and Healthy

baby travel vagn

Travel Activities: Keeping a toddler entertained on long drives can be challenging. We bring along a variety of small toys, books, and games to keep our daughter engaged. Simple conversation and music also help make the journey more enjoyable .

Healthy Eating on the Road: Managing meals and snacks while traveling can be a bit tricky, but it’s doable with a little planning. We cook half of our meals in Koala’s kitchen, which allows us to maintain a healthy diet and accommodate any dietary preferences or needs.

Showers and Hygiene: Keeping everyone clean while on the road is essential. In our case, we like to combine showers in campgrounds and dips in lakes or beaches when possible with our motorhome’s shower every other time we need a shower. It’s all about finding a balance that works for your family.

Finding Safe and Convenient Parking

baby travel vagn

Finding parking for overnight stays can be a challenge, especially in cities. We prefer street parking or designated campervan spots when available. In cities like Ghent, where parking can be tricky, planning ahead is key. We also look for safe and quiet areas to ensure a good night’s sleep. And if a spot feels off, no matter what time is it or if it’s just one of us thinking that way, we always look for another one.

baby travel vagn

Traveling full-time with kids is a unique and rewarding experience. Our adventures with Koala have shown us the joys and challenges of van life, and we wouldn’t trade the memories we’ve made for anything. For families considering a similar lifestyle, having the right health insurance is crucial. Nomad Health offers comprehensive coverage that’s perfect for our nomadic adventures. To learn more about how it can support your travels, visit their website .

As we have explored, embracing the van life with kids might come with its own set of challenges, but the rewards far outweigh them. With a little planning and the right support, you can create great experiences for your family , no matter where the road takes you. Safe travels!

While the Bolshoi Ballet Company was established in 1776, the theater itself was opened in 1825. The glittering, six-tier auditorium is lavishly and decadently decorated; it is a fitting setting for the world-class performances that take place on its stage.

Spending a night watching a performance of such classics as The Nutcracker or Swan Lake at the Bolshoi Theatre is sure to be a memorable experience and the beauty all around you only adds to the sense of occasion.

3. Moscow Kremlin

Moscow Kremlin

This famously fortified complex is remarkably home to five palaces and four cathedrals and is the historic, political and spiritual center of the city. The Kremlin serves as the residence for the country’s president. It has been used as a fort, and this fact is made clear by its sheer size. The Kremlin’s outer walls were built in the late 1400s.

Under Ivan III, better known as Ivan the Great, the Kremlin became the center of a unified Russian state, and was extensively remodeled. Three of the Kremlin’s cathedrals date to his reign that lasted from 1462-1505. The Deposition Church and the Palace of Facets were also constructed during this time. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was built in 1508. It is the tallest tower at the Kremlin with a height of 266 feet (81 meters).

Joseph Stalin removed many of the relics from the tsarist regimes. However, the Tsar Bell, the world’s largest bell, and the Tsar Cannon, the largest bombard by caliber in the world, are among the remaining items from that era. The Kremlin Armory is one of Moscow’s oldest museums as it was established more than 200 years ago. Its diamond collection is impressive.

The Kremlin’s gardens – Taynitsky, Grand Kremlin Public and Alexander – are beautiful. The Kremlin has also served as the religious center of the country, and there is a tremendous number of preserved churches and cathedrals here. The collections contained within the museums include more than 60,000 historical, cultural and artistic monuments. Those who enjoy the performing arts will want to consider attending a ballet or concert at the State Kremlin Palace. Completed in 1961, it is the only modern building in the Kremlin.

2. Red Square

Red Square

Lying at the heart of Moscow, Red Square is the most important and impressive square in the city. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions due to its wealth of historical sights and cultural landmarks.

Drenched in history, the huge square is home to incredible sights such as the Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral and Lenin’s Mausoleum, among others. Consequently, it is not to be missed when in Moscow as it really is home to the city’s most stunning monuments.

It is here that many important moments in Russian history took place; the former marketplace has hosted everything from Tsar’s coronations and public ceremonies to rock concerts and Soviet military parades. Wandering around the massive square is a humbling experience and undoubtedly one of the highlights the city has to offer.

1. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Saint Basil's Cathedral

Located in the impressive Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral is gorgeous; its delightful spires appear as if out of a fairytale. The most recognizable building in the country, the cathedral is very much a symbol of Russia. No visit to Moscow is complete without having taken in its unique and distinctive features.

Ivan the Terrible ordered the cathedral’s construction in the mid-16th century, and legend holds that Ivan put out the architect’s eyes so that he would be unable to build another cathedral more glorious than St. Basil’s. Designed to resemble the shape of a bonfire in full flame, the architecture is not only unique to the period in which it was built but to any subsequent period. For various reasons, both Napoleon and Stalin wanted to destroy the cathedral but fortunately did not succeed.

Known for its various colors, shapes and geometric patterns, St. Basil’s Cathedral houses nine different chapels that are all connected by a winding labyrinth of corridors and stairways. On the lower floor, St. Basil’s Chapel contains a silver casket bearing the body of St. Basil the Blessed.

Throughout the cathedral are many beautiful murals, frescoes, wooden icons and other art works and artifacts. Outside the cathedral is a lovely garden with the bronze Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, who rallied an all-volunteer Russian army against Polish invaders during a period of the late 16th century known as the Times of Troubles.
