Travelling in India is now easier but perhaps a little less exciting than it was in earlier centuries. The modern tourist does not have the option of sailing up the Yamuna and seeing the Taj Mahal glowing against an unpolluted sky, or the dreaming domes of the jama Masjid beyond the walls of Delhi's Red Fort which at one time bordered the river. They can no longer arrive in Jaipur on camel back and see the skyline of the old city or the silhouette of Amber fort. Further back in time, watchmen must have raised the alarm as they saw the distant clouds of dust that warned of an invading army from Afghanistan or Persia. Jaipur had been less vulnerable than Delhi or Agra, for the expanse of desert to the west was a more effective defence than stone ramparts. More recent invasions include the thousands of refugees at the time of Partition, Rajasthani villagers escaping drought in the countryside, and the tourists, who are assailed by crowded, exuberant cityscapes where the architecture and lifestyles of the past jostle with the present. Delhi Luxury Tours … In present-day Delhi, Agra and Jaipur are embedded many older towns — that of the Tughlaqs (Tughlaqabad), of Sikandar (Sikandara), of Akbar (Akbarabad — the Agra of Jahangir) and of Shahjahan (Shahjahanabad). Jaipur's walled city was laid out by Raja Jai Singh II of Amber, below the existing hill fort, and the city of the plain has now spread far beyond Jai Singh's city walls. For over eight centuries, the northern part of Rajasthan and the Ganga-Yamuna valley have had a shared history, so that these three cities carry within themselves memories of glory and conquest but happily also a thirst for the beautiful.

Historians of modern town-planning study blueprints and multi-coloured maps; it may come as a surprise to them that the Jaipur City Museum has many maps which show how the city was planned — over two and a half centuries ago. The town planning concepts of the Harappan civilisation in the 3rd millennium BC were transmitted through the centuries and written in the Silpa Sastras (The Art of Building). Later versions of this were used in planning the layout of Jaipur. The British extravaganza of New Delhi was designed by Lutyens also from Baroque models of an earlier century. Later in the modern capital of Punjab and Haryana commissioned by Jawarharlal Nehru and overseen by Le Courbusier, Chandigarh, we can see elements of Jaipur, and also of New Delhi — all three being interesting examples of the "open" city. In the later extensions built for Delhi and Jaipur, the organic links with the designs of Jai Singh and Lutyens are apparent.

In India it is common practice to have new streets or overbridges "inaugurated" by some suitably senior figure at a time convenient to the great personage. In 1648 the emperor Shahjahan presided at the beginnings of his Delhi: "On the night of Friday 25th Zi'l Hijja, in the twelfth year of his auspicious reign...being the time appointed by the astrologers, the foundations were marked out with the usual ceremonies". Jai Singh, likewise, must have bowed to the astrologers, but he is remembered for his fascination with *astronomy. He built observatories in many towns, and saw the Almighty as his suzerain, "the King of Kings...whose power the lofty orbs of Heaven are only a few leaves; and the stars...small pieces of money in the treasury of the empire of the Most High". The upward thrust of the Mewar plateau and the Great Indian Desert or the Thar separates the Indus valley from that of the Yamuna-Ganga. "Land divides and water unites"— how true this is of the cultural zones of northern India. Pontoon bridges (formed by upturned boats laid side by side), stone bridges and iron bridges have spanned rivers, but deserts are difficult to cross. On either side of the desert (known as maru in the Sanskrit texts of the Vedas and Mahabharata) were territories with names which clearly evoked local geography — Sind (from "Sindhu", the Indus), Punjab (panch five, ab, water: thus, "the land of the five rivers"), and the Doab (do, two, referring to the tracts watered by the Ganga and the Yamuna). The hills of Rajasthan are very ancient; many millennia ago they were a green and pleasant land. In early historic times the river Saraswati flowed here and joined the Indus, before disappearing underground to become a memory and to provide guessing-games for archaeologists. Brajbhumi, the region associated with Krishna, is the land beside the Yamuna, with its main centres at Mathura and Vrindaran, but it stretches fingers into Rajasthan as far as the shrine of Nathdwara. The temple there houses a celebrated image of the cowherd prince who became the King of Dwarka on the west coast, separated from the land of his childhood by the desert.

For centuries the towns on the Yamuna have been crossroads cities, where the road from the west coast to the Himalayas scissored that from Afghanistan to the Bay of Bengal. The lines of pack-animals carrying salt from the sea met those carrying wheat from the Punjab. Jewellery from Rajasthan and ivoryware from Delhi were exchanged tor Gujarat silk and Bengal , these Cities we cotton. When re the stable centres of prosperous kingdoms, families of substance — particularly the rulers — indulged a boundless appetite for the beautiful and the unusual, and weavers, carvers and painters busily refined their skills to meet their patrons' demands. The audacious rail-way construction programme which linked Delhi and Agra to Kolkata (Calcutta) and later to the west coast via Rajasthan brought tourists to the region that was officiallycalled Rajputana. For travellers in the late 19th century, Jaipur was attractive for another reason: Delhi and Agra had been two of the epicentres of the Revolt of 1857, during which the princes of Rajasthan had stood aside, "loyal" to the British. Their loyalty was rewarded: when Queen Victoria was proclaimed Empress in 1877, these princes, along with many others, were designated as feudatories under British paramountcy, and the Maharaja of Jaipur was accorded a satisfactorily large number of gun salutes —the symbol of statehood. The Jaipur ruler was following a tradition of "accommodation". Descended from theKachchwahas who had established themselves in the desert in the 10th century and who claimed descent through Lord Rama from the sun, the Maharaja's ancestors had in the 16th century accepted Mughal suzerainty, and a Kachchwaha princess had married Emperor Akbar. The kings of Amber served as governors of the Mughals in Bengal and Afghanistan.

Jaipur was one of the most important urban centres of North India in the 18th century, much as Delhi had been in the 17th and Agra in the 16th centuries. It was an unusual city for Rajasthan, in that it was not a rugged fort, but one built on the plains -- symbolic of Raja Jai Singh's attitude of mind, which eagerly sought knowledge from all quarters. Halls of faceted mirrors sparkled in the palaces of all three cities and stylised floral designs danced through Rajasthani textiles, through jewelled pietra dura in the Taj Mahal and in bas-relief in sandstone in Delhi Fort. Jaipur rulers borrowed Mughal fashions and in periods of crisis in Delhi or Agra, court poets and artists fled to Jaipur or to Amber and were accorded patronage. Jaipur itself did not suffer from Persian and Afghan invasions like Delhi, but the indifference of Jai Singh's successors led to the dispersal of the priceless library he had built. By the late 18th century, the three cities were being buffeted by the incursions of the swift-footed Maratha warriors from the southwest. Had the raiders been able to consolidate what they had gained for a few decades, there would in truth have been a Maharashtra (maha, great, rashtra, kingdom) over much of Rajasthan and the northern plain. One decisive battle in 1803 won them a swathe of territory which included both Agra and Delhi. From there, their eyes turned to Afghanistan and, therefore, to Sind and Punjab which lay in between. Rajasthan escaped a conquest and after the Revolt of 1857, the British came to an accommodation with the ruling Rajputs which averted this danger permanently, although keeping them well under British influence. 1. Taj Mahal

Rightfully considered as the most beautiful monument in the world, Taj Mahal is located in the historical city of Agra. Popularly known as the “symbol of love”, Taj Mahal was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a memorial for his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal who died while giving birth to their 14th child in 1631.

Every year millions of visitors from India and all over the world pass through the magnificent gates to catch a glimpse of this breathtaking monument, and almost none leave feeling disappointed or underwhelmed by the grandeur of this monument.

The Taj Mahal was constructed using white marble imported from Makrana in Rajasthan. Over 20,000 people from all over India and Central Asia worked on this grand building and it took almost 17 years to complete the construction of the Taj Mahal.

The construction was finally completed by 1653 AD. The tomb is laid out in a rectangular shape, and can be approached through a massive gateway which has an arch and alcoves on both sides of it.

Each of the corners of the mausoleum platform is graced with 40 meter high white minarets.  Within the Taj you will also find an inlay of thousands of semi-precious stones carved with flowers.

The four Taj features impressive vaulted arches containing pietra dura scrollwork and the quotations from the Quran. The whole structure is topped off by four small domes.

Back in 1573 when the fort was constructed by the Mughal emperor Akbar, it first used to encompass an entire city within its walls, complete with political offices, living quarters and lively bazaars.

Agra Fort was the main residence of the Mughals till 1638, after which the capital was shifted from Agra to New Delhi. Agra Fort is one of the best-known monuments built by the Mughals and has intricately decorated buildings.

It is a magnificent blend of the Mughal style of art and architecture and is one of the most visited tourist spots in Agra. The Red Fort in Agra covers a vast area of three kilometers and is surrounded by a 70 feet tall wall. The walls are made of red sandstone and they completely surround the fort from all the directions.

The Fort has four main gates on its four sides. Built solely out of red sandstone, this expansive architecture looms over the beautiful city of Agra. Within the premises of the fort lie the most exquisitely built Pearl Mosque, Diwan-i I Khas, Diwan-i I Aam, Musamman Burj, Sheesh Mahal, Moti Masjid, Nagina Masjid and Jahangiri Mahal.

3. Mehtab Bagh

Mehtab Bagh was originally built by Emperor Babur as the last park in a series of eleven parks on the Yamuna’s east bank. This was long before the Taj was constructed.

The Garden eventually fell into a state of disrepair until it was little more than a huge mound of sand. The park was revived again to protect the Taj Mahal from the erosive effects of the sand blown across the river.

Mahtab Bagh is now fully functional and is now one the best places from where tourists get an excellent view of the great mausoleum. Hyunjin Chose Custom Versace for His Global Stray Kids Tour

Stray Kids fans, rejoice! The South Korean boy band has marked the first day of their global dominATE tour, performing at the KSPO Dome in South Korea earlier today (where the band will be playing for four nights). The group will certainly be busy in the months ahead, with shows across South Korea, Singapore, China, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, and Australia until mid-January 2025.

Hitting the stage to perform their this such as “Chk Chk Boom” and “I Like It,” members Hyunjin, Felix, Bang Chan, Han, Lee Know, I.N, Seungmin, and Changbin all kicked off the worldwide tour by bringing their signature electrifying performance style. And while they all dressed cohesively in sync—it’s a boy band, duh!—each member was sure to embrace their individual fashion sense. Especially Hyunjin, who chose custom looks designed by Donatella Versace for his solo performances.

Donatella Versace created four special looks for Hyunjin, which will be worn throughout the tour. His first custom brow ensemble debuted in Seoul just today: It included a crystal-net balaclava, sleeveless Versace-logo tank top, and cargo pants. Custom Versace Mercury sneakers completed the look. “Donatella is so supportive and a true icon,” says Hyunjin of the fashion partnership. “Wearing Versace always makes me feel more energy, more attitude, and more of my own power when performing. The outfits designed by Donatella feel very luxury.”

As for the remainder of his stage outfits, Versace created other pieces such as short sleeve-tees with a burnished finish, single-sleeve knit shawls, and more cargo pants and crystal net balaclavas. The looks were fitted onto Hyunjin at the Palazzo Versace in Milan this summer. ”It was such a pleasure to host Hyunjin in Milan. It is a truly special and meaningful place for me, my team, and all our extended Versace family,” Versace tells Vogue . “It didn’t take long for the fans to discover he was here—we had fun going out to meet them together.”

The designer adds that Hyunjin’s confidence and “connection with his fans” is what inspired her to create for the star. “I really loved designing the clothes for his stage performances. He knows exactly what suits him, and what works for him as a performer,” says Versace. “I love that he feels Versace gives him confidence and special energy. He is so thoughtful and gentle and when he’s on stage—he shines like a true star.” The cool statement outfits sure help, too.

Hilton honors members get points on small luxury hotels of the world.

The 38-room Nimb Hotel in Copenhagen, Denmark is in the midst of the city's Tivoli Gardens.

The Hilton Hotels Corporation recently made an interesting deal with London-based Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH). Essentially, Hilton Honors members can now book stays at these unique, independent luxury hotels around the world through Hilton. Hilton Honors members will get points for each stay and can also use points to pay for their stays.

SLH has 560 luxury boutique hotels spanning 90 countries. Hilton is not acquiring the SLH collection. Instead, the deal is a strategic partnership that lets Hilton expand its existing portfolio of luxury hotel experiences with the addition of more than 400 of these boutique properties. These properties are now available on all Hilton direct booking channels, including Hilton.com and the Hilton Honors app.

When the deal was first launched in February, Shaun Leleu, chairman, Small Luxury Hotels of the World, described it as a “win-win” for both brands. “Hilton customers will gain access to our unrivalled collection of exceptional boutique hotels, while our properties enjoy amplified reach to a loyal and discerning audience. It's a game changer for independently owned hotels on a global scale.”

Hilton already has a luxury brand portfolio, including Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts, Conrad Hotels & Resorts, LXR Hotels & Resorts and Signia by Hilton. According to a spokeswoman, the deal with SLH will give travelers new ways of staying with Hilton in intimate spaces and unique places. These range from rustic huts and woodland treehouses to rainforest retreats and coastal villas and palaces.

Through the partnership , the 195 million members of Hilton Honors can earn and redeem points for SLH stays and enjoy exclusive benefits, including free Wi-Fi and a guaranteed member discount. Hilton Honors Gold and Diamond members get space-available room upgrades and continental breakfast for up to two guests.

We spoke with Brad Anderson, Vice President, Hilton Honors, about the SLH-Hilton partnership. Since the program was announced six months ago, he noted that Hilton had added more than 400 SLH hotels to its reservation and points platform. As for the rest, “We will bring most of them on our system.”

Anderson emphasized that while SLH hotels are not ‘Hiltons’, Honors members can earn points and get benefits just as they do at Hilton properties.

“Small Luxury Hotel is not one of our 24 brands,” Anderson noted. But the partnership allows us to complement our brands like LXR, Waldorf Astoria, Conrad, and Signia by Hilton.” Anderson describes Signia, which currently includes hotels in Atlanta, San Jose and Orlando, as “designed for larger group experiences and large events,” as opposed to the SLH hotels which typically have less than 100 keys.

In addition to offering a boutique experience, the SLH hotels are often located in destinations where Hilton may not have a product. According to Anderson, SLH hotels are 60% in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, 20% in Asia, and 20% in North America.

Unique SLH properties include places like the Nimb Hotel , located in the famous Tivoli Gardens of Copenhagen, Denmark. The Moorish-styled palace with a striking Venetian marble façade has just 38 rooms and suites, but a state-of-the-art wellness center and five dining options in the heart of the city. It was also the only hotel that came up on my Hilton site search of Copenhagen.

Other unique offerings include the Nobu Hotel Marbella in southern Spain, a laid-back beach retreat with high-end fine dining at the exclusive La Plaza. And in the cowboy U.S. state of Wyoming, the 40-room Rusty Parrot Lodge & Spa offers a tranquil getaway near Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks.

Anderson says, “It’s a collaboration and a distribution approach, brining 195 million Honors members to the SLH hotels. They are paying to be on the network. When Honors points are redeemed, we compensate them. It’s great for Hilton Honors, and we are driving demand to SLH owners.”

Asked if there was any pushback from Hilton brand franchisees to bringing on potential competitors, Anderson noted, “Our owners see the power in relationships.”

Anderson added, “Luxury is really important, and aspirational stays are also very important. We need partners with expertise in a blend of both. We are developing our luxury brands, but SLH offers a different experience, more of a villa experience, which offers a nice synergy.”

Do these small hotels have to adopt a Hilton "flag" or conform to any specific Hilton policies or standards? Anderson says that SLH has a strong vetting program for its member hotels. He adds, “There are some Hilton Honors member benefits these hotels need to provide—an exclusive discount, hydration [water], space available room upgrade, complimentary breakfast, etc.”

Travelers can redeem points to book a Small Hotel or mix points and miles to do so. As Anderson puts it, ‘You don’t have to redeem all of your Hilton Honors points to enjoy one of these aspirational stays. Younger customers want instant gratification.”

Points awarded will mostly be based on spending. Anderson says, “We’ve activated our members, we’re using social media, and SLH is sharing the news on their site.”

“Every hotel has its own story, like Hampton Inn and its waffle experience,” Anderson said. “But today there is just way more demand for unique experiences, like at these SLH small hotels. That’s why Hilton Honors members are redeeming points to stay there.”
