Celebrating 25 years since the release of Giant Sand’s legendary ‘Chore Of Enchantment’ , the panoramic masterpiece that was the turning point for the classic line-up featuring seasoned songwriter Howe Gelb and latter-day Calexico members Joey Burns and John Convertino from 1999.

Filled with mind-bending one-liners, customary offbeat instrumentation, echo fields and hazy horizons; ‘Chore Of Enchantment’ is a songbook of Howe Gelb’s greatest songs. The high level production by the legendary Jim Dickinson , PJ Harvey foil John Parish and acclaimed singer/songwriter/producer Kevin Salem , a tour-de-force of Gelb’s unique oeuvre.

Highlighting their eclectic and esoteric career, this reissue celebrates the band’s magnificent, long and winding career. This deluxe reissue features restored artwork and newly penned liner notes from MOJO’s Dave Henderson .

Giant Sand have been the primary outlet for the stylistic curveballs and sun-damaged songcraft of singer-songwriter Howe Gelb . In four plus decades he’s managed to reinvent rock, country, blues, punk, garage, lo-fi, jazz, gospel, avant-garde noise and flamenco gypsy music with his impressionistic imagery and expansive observations of the world.

The reissue is released alongside 2010’s ‘Blurry Blue Mountain’ . Recorded 25 years into their career, Giant Sand’s 25th album is a gorgeous and much-celebrated collection of perfectly-crafted, personal songwriting from Howe Gelb . With the exception of one or two wonderfully abrupt and perfectly placed outbursts, it’s a gentle rollercoaster traversing the inner thinking of the why’s and wherefores of whatever, a meditation on time and the ageing process.

Musing on the record, Howe Gelb explains “On this LP I show off an acquired appreciation for the simple lyric. Kinda haiku at times, like flamenco verse, or the blues. I can focus more as it’s obvious there’s only so much time left – that has a production value all its own”

Get ready for a sand-tastic time in Port Aransas

The largest native sand sculpting competition in the United States, Texas SandFest, is returning to Port Aransas from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm from April 19th to the 21st. The City of Port Aransas and the Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau are busy preparing for the biggest annual festival in Port Aransas.

"SandFest is the biggest signature festival we have here in Port Aransas and it’s the biggest economic driver for us. It comes at a great time, during April, to help support the city, to help support our community, and our tourism business here in Port Aransas," Brett Stawar, President and CEO of Port Aransas Tourism Bureau and Chamber of Commerce, said.

The sand sculptors who compete in Texas SandFest travel to South Texas from all over the world.

“Oh gosh, I believe we have some from Argentina, we have some from Canada, we have some from Europe. They come from everywhere. Some of them are also ice sculptors and snow sculptors. But they absolutely love coming to Port Aransas every year for SandFest," Melinda Compton, Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce Marketing and Digital Content Manager, said.

In addition to giant sand sculptures, attendees can also enjoy live music, vendors, food trucks, and other fun-filled activities.

“You can go to Texas SandFest dot org to purchase a wristband for the entire weekend. An adult wristband is 30 dollars for the whole weekend and kids are five dollars," Compton said.

About 30,000 Texas SandFest tickets were sold for the festival in 2023. The money raised from Texas SandFest goes right back into the community of Port Aransas.

"The money raised in SandFest goes back to also support the many different programs and outreach efforts in Port Aransas and around neighboring communities. You know, our scholarship program through SandFest is amazing," Stawar said.

Some of the organizations that benefit from SandFest are Port Aransas EMS, Animal Friends of Port Aransas, and The Amos Rehabilitation Keep (ARK).

Tickets for SandFest can be purchased online here through Monday, April 15. After the 15th, tickets can be purchased at the event gate using cash only.

Along the 2023 Silk Way Rally: Saratov, Saratov Region

We continue the cycle of stories about cities and regions, the territories of which will host the 13th edition of the International Rally-Raid

The 2023 International   Silk Way Rally starts on July 6 in Kazan — the Ceremonial Opening will take place in the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan as at the very first edition of the event in 2009. Within ten days the competitors will have to overcome a total distance of 5,230 kilometers along the most impressive landscapes of the European part of Russia, and the key elements on the way to victory will be completely new selective sections laid by the Project Directorate on the eastern slope of the Southern Urals near Magnitogorsk, as well as stages in the Orenburg and Samara Regions.

Another novelty of 2023 event will be Saratov, which the competitors will reach on July 12; the city will enter the Silk Way Rally route for the first time. The Administration of the Saratov Region has considerable experience in holding motorsport competitions, but there have never been international level events here.

Saratov was founded three times and each time it happened in a new place. The first city was founded in 1590, but a quarter of a century later it burned down, and it is not possible to establish its exact location. By 1617 Saratov was rebuilt — on the left bank of the Volga River, but in 1674, according to the royal decree of Alexey Mikhailovich, the city was moved to the right bank.

Saratov began to develop most actively in the middle of the 18th century — due to the short overland route to Moscow and access to the Volga, the city turned into a major trade center. The development of Saratov in the 19th century, in turn, stimulated the flowering of the shipping industry, as railways and horse-drawn transport had been in short supply by that time. As a result, the Volga River became one of the most important transport routes in Russia, and Saratov turned into a major port. Today it is one of the leading cultural and economic centers of the Volga Region and a powerful scientific cluster of more than two dozen higher educational institutions.

Basketball is one of the most popular sports in Saratov — the local Avtodor Club is a permanent member of the VTB United League. In addition, Sokol Football Club plays in the Russian Second League, and the local Kristall is one of the teams competing in the VHL Hockey Championship.

Saratov is also familiar with rally-raids — The Great Steppe — Volga, a round of the Russian Championship, was held here in 2017 and 2018. Andrey Rudskoy was in the lead twice; the driver regularly starts at the Silk Way Rally where he is invariably among the favorites. The Great Steppe — Volga Baja is remembered for its exciting high-speed selective sections, but at the Silk Way Rally the competitors will have to find an approach to these places again and get acquainted with completely new tracks.

The International   Silk Way Rally is one of the most difficult challenges in the world of motorsport, and every year more and more fans from various regions of Russia can see the struggles of the best drivers in the world at the margin of vehicle and human capacity with their own eyes. At the same time, one of the strategic tasks of the Project Directorate is the development and popularization of technical sports, and it is for this purpose that the Small Towns of Russia Grand Tour is held as part of the rally-raid. During this event amateur competitors can get acquainted with the world of motorsport and then, perhaps, build their own career and someday fight for the White Tiger, the main award of the International   Silk Way Rally.

• Nikolay Semyonov, the only Russian who has ever received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry and one of the founders of chemical physics, was born in Saratov.
• The first steam-powered mills in the Russian Empire appeared in Saratov, due to which the city had the unofficial name of the flour-grinding capital of the country.
• One of the main symbols of Saratov is a three-kilometer bridge across the Volga River. It connects Saratov and Engels.
• Yuri Gagarin, the first person in the world to fly into space, studied at the Saratov Industrial College and began his career as a pilot at the Saratov DOSAAF Flying Club. It is curious that the place of landing after the first flight into space is also located in the Saratov Region.

The main goal of SFM'23 is to present and discuss the latest advances in the field of biophysics of optical and laser technologies in biology and medicine, fine mechanics and control of optical and physiological properties of tissues and cells, coherent optics of random and ordered media, materials and environmental sciences, nonlinear dynamics of laser systems, laser physics, spectroscopy and molecular modeling, nanophotonics and nanobiophotonics. Specific problems of imaging and engineering of eukaryotic genomes, laser femtosecond optoporation of cells and tissues for in situ transfection of cells, remotely controlled nanostructured systems for targeted delivery and diagnostics, development of technologies for optical ‘disruption’ of the blood-brain barrier and personalized treatment of aggressive forms of glial tumors, combined thermographic imaging and terahertz tomography of tissues in the diagnosis of skin and mucous membranes, photoacoustic technologies for early theranostics of metastatic tumors, studies of the fundamental mechanisms of sleep for the development of breakthrough technologies in neurorehabilitation medicine, as well as the development of methods for screening-wise non-invasive diagnosis of viral and bacterial respiratory infections using laser spectroscopy and machine learning will be discussed.

The main attention will be paid to basic research of interactions of coherent, low-coherent, polarized, spatially- and temporally-modulated electromagnetic radiation within the broad wavelength range from x-rays to terahertz with inhomogeneous scattering media and biological tissues and cells. Elastic, inelastic (Raman, SERS, and CARS) and dynamic light scattering, Doppler, photoacoustic, photothermal, and nonlinear interactions, tissue and cell mechanics, and photobiological effects will be considered.

On this basis, the variety of laser and optical technologies for medical diagnostics, therapy, surgery, and light dosimetry, as well as for diagnostics and imaging of random and ordered media will be presented. Studies on lasers, fibers, and microstructured waveguides will be discussed. Optogenetics, plasmonics, and biosensing also will be the key features of the meeting .
