2023 Malawi Tourism Industry Awards Nominees Announced

The official voting portal is now opened and voting has commenced as the final list of the nominees for the 2023 Malawi Tourism Industry Awards of Excellence has been released the Malawi Tourism Council (MTC) . This information was made available via a press released dated 12 September 2023 and signed by the Executive Director of the Malawi Tourism Council, Memory Momba Kamthunzi .

The Malawi Tourism Industry Awards serve as a prominent platform to celebrate and acknowledge outstanding contributions and achievements within the Malawi tourism and hospitality sector through different categories of excellence. They aim to recognize, reward, and inspire excellence among individuals, organizations, and destinations that play a vital role in the nation’s tourism industry.

The 2023 Tourism Awards of Excellence Ceremony and Gala will take place at the Banqueting Hall, Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe, on Saturday 30th September 2023, from 6pm. This Gala event will bring together industry leaders, innovators, and stakeholders for a night of glamour, recognition, and celebration.

Theme: Promoting Competitiveness through Industry Excellence and Resilience.

Votes will play a crucial role in determining the winners across various award categories. Malawi Tourism Council to Hold Inaugural Tourism Industry Awards of Excellence

For the first time in Malawi, the Malawi Tourism Council is set to recognise individuals, places and agencies that strive to bring change in travel tourism, hospitality, aviation and related industries.

The nominations are in 20 different categories.

They include Leading Hotel Award, Leading Tour Operator, Leading Travel Operator, Leading Game Reserve and National Park and Destination Promotion Individual Award, among others.

The council’s Executive Director Memory Momba Kamthuzi says the awards seeks to recognise the contribution organisations and destination play in promoting the sector.

Kamthuzi says the awards which are set for September 30 and will be presided over by Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule.

“The awards serve as a platform to celebrate and acknowledge outstanding contributions and achievements within the country’s tourism and hospitality sector through different categories of excellence. Voting is underway and open up until September 27 https://www.mtcmw.com/index.php/vote/ “said Kamthunzi.

Musicians Tay Grin and Faith Mussa, have been listed in the category of Destination Promotion Individual Award.

Allied Influencers of Destination nominated include William Kamkwamba, Madalitso Band, Shemu Joyah and Lake of Stars.

Napoleon Dzombe and Prophet Shepherd Bushiri have been nominated on Life Achievers Award.

The awards are running under the theme 'Promoting Competitiveness through Industry Excellence and Resilience.

Tourism sector employees about 600 000 people and contributes about 7.3 percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product GDP.

It creates over 3 percent of total employment in Malawi of the nine percent of its population in labour workforce.

Tourism players get recognition

September 30 2023 will go down in history as the memorable day that Malawi Tourism Council (MTC) held its  first Tourism Awards in Malawi to honour outstanding players.

Speaking during the event, Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule said the local tourism industry has the potential to grow if players are dedicated.

She encouraged tourism industry players to keep growing, being innovative and working together.

MTC executive director Memory Monba-Kamthunzi said they want to use the awards platform to inspire excellence by motivating hospitality and tourism players to strive for professionalism and excellence in their operations.

“The awards are also meant to provide an opportunity to network and make partnerships. Such linkages promote collaboration between the tourism sector and other industries, in the process fostering cross-sector partnerships and growth,” she said.

During the event, spiced by musical performances and poetry, Blantyre-based Amaryllis Hotel won The Leading Hotel Award while Kumbali Lodge of Lilongwe won The Leading Lodge Award. The Sunbird Waterfront in Salima won The Leading Lake Resort Award, Kutchire Lodge in  Machinga got the Leading National Park/Game Reserve Lodge and Bingu International Convention Centre of Lilongwe scooped the Leading Meetings and Conference Centre.

The event also awarded Mama Mia Restaurant, Lilongwe as The Leading Restaurant Award, Chef Ipyana Mwagomba famed for his goat soup won the Leading Chef Award as Ethiopian Airlines won the Leading Airline Award.

Avis Car Hire got the Leading Car Hire Award, while Central Wilderness Safaris got the Leading Tour Operator Award. Majete Game Reserve in Chikwawa won the Leading Game Reserve/National Park Award while the Destination Promotion Individual Award went to travel blogger Travel with Mervis.

Other winners included Prophet Shepherd Bushiri who got the Tourism Achiever Award, Mount Mulanje as the Leading Tourist Attraction Award and Kungoni Cultural Centre in Mua, Dedza as the Leading Community-based Tourism Organisation.

One of the awardees, Chef Mwagomba expressed gratitude with the recognition.

He said: “My career as a chef has not really been fully appreciated here, but it brings me immense joy to see not only myself but also many other Malawian chefs inspired and encouraged. Finally our efforts are beginning to receive the recognition they deserve.”

On his part, Amaryllis Hotel manager Remy Waheed said the award is a reminder that all hard work shall be rewarded.

“We are proud to state that we comply with all necessary requirements of the council for our category. We are encouraged to continue excellence service delivery. We believe we are the best and now we know that Malawi believes we are the best too,” he said.

The Malawi Tourism Council on Tuesday announced the nominee finalists for the 2023 Tourism Industry Awards of Excellence, which has seen musicians Tay Grin and Faith Mussa listed in the category of Destination Promotion Individual Award.

Apart from Faith and Tay Grin, the category also has travel blogger Travel with Mervis and photographer Peter Makwana.

Faith, famed for songs such as ‘Mdidi’ and ‘Desperate’, said Tuesday he was excited to be nominated.

“This nomination means a lot as there are a lot of artists who are doing so much in marketing the country but to be recognised, I feel honoured and it means a lot,” the singer and guitarist, who has toured the world with his music, said.

Tay Grin, who has just returned from the annual Lusaka July event in Zambia recently, said “it is always a great honour to be recognised by your nation for the work and effort one puts in”.the

Makwana, who has been on move marketing the country through his lenses, said he was humbled and excited to be nominated.

“I have been doing this for over 15 years and to be recognised is a significant achievement and recognition of my commitment,” he said.

Running under the theme ‘Promoting Competitiveness through Industry Excellence and Resilience’, the awards and gala will be held on September 30 2023 at Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe.

As part of the awards process, organisers of the awards have since invited the public to cast their votes for their favourite nominees.

The official online voting process opened on Tuesday and will run until September 27 2023.

There are 20 awards in total, which also include Allied Influencers of Destination which has nominees such as William Kamkwamba, ‘I am from Malawi’ Apparel and Song (KBG), filmmaker Shemu Joyah, Madalitso Band, the duo of Yobu Maligwa and Yosefe Kalekeni, currently on a world tour, and Lake of Stars Festival.

The other categories are The Leading Lake Resort, The Leading Lodge Award, The Leading Hotel Award, The Leading National Park /Game Reserve Lodge, The Leading Restaurant Award, The Leading Chef Award and The Leading Airline Award.

The Leading Hotel Award has nominees such as Amaryllis Hotel, Crossroads Hotel Blantyre, President Hotel, Protea Hotel by Marriott and Sunbird Capital.

There is also the Life Achievers Award which has nominees such as Napoleon Dzombe, Prophet Shepherd Bushiri, Annie Fletcher and The 44 Lodge Management.

Coordinator of the awards Dennis Imaan said Tuesday a jury made up of high profile players came up with the list.

“Awards are always tricky but the jury did its job. This is the first time the awards are happening. We needed to start and hope we grow from here,” Imaan said.

Malawi: Visa waiver excites tourism industry

Malawi Tourism Council (MTC) says industry operators are banking hopes on the visa fees waiver for improved international tourism business and foreign exchange generation.

The sentiments follow pronouncements by President Lazarus Chakwera in the State of National Address at the opening of the 50th Session of Parliament in Lilongwe that to maximise tourism potential and increase its contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) and forex generation, his government will be waiving visa fees with immediate effect.

Malawi’s tourism sector recovers, earns K580bn

The local tourism industry slightly improved in 2021 after being worst hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, published figures from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) show.

WTTC country analysis published on Tuesday shows that the tourism sector contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) rose to 5.8 percent, generating $512.8 million (about K528 billion in revenue and creating additional 15 600 jobs to hit 513 200.

During the same period in 2020, the sector’s contribution to the economy stood at 5.7 percent of GDP and generated $490.8 million (about K506 billion), the figures show.

The figures further show that in 2019, the sector’s contribution to GDP stood at 7.3 percent and generated $622.2 million (about K703.7 billion)  and created 586 500 jobs. 

In a statement accompanying the report,  WTTC president and chief executive officer Julia Simpson said the future is bright, with tourism GDP and employment expected to reach pre-pandemic levels by next year.

“The recovery in 2021 was slower than expected due in part to the impact of the Omicron variant but mainly due to an uncoordinated approach by governments which rejected the advice of the World Health Organisation, which maintained that closing borders would not stop the spread of the virus but would only serve to damage economies and livelihoods,” she said.

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Wildlife Michael Usi was not immediately available to comment on the report, but earlier said  domestic tourism has been the biggest cushion for the sector.

“Our plans for the next financial year is to do more domestic marketing in conjunction with the private sector and local councils,” he said.”

Malawi Tourism Council chairperson John Malili earlier admitted that domestic tourism is doing well as local tourists appreciate the precautions put in place to avoid the spread of Covid-19.

The tourism sector is a high growth export service sector capable of making a substantial contribution to the socio-economic development of Malawi, according to WTTC.

Employment created within the sector has the potential to drive prosperity and empower both women and youths.

The sector also generates foreign exchange through visitor exports, tax and non-tax revenues.
