The House of Saltwater Crocodile: Bhitarakanika

Bhitarkanika National Park is a national park located at the Kendrapara District of Odisha. It is designated as a National Park since 16th Sep 1998. The meaning of Bhitarakanika is interior beauty. The park is home of Saltwater Crocodile, White Crocodile, Indian python, King Cobra, black ibis, darters and many other species of flora and fauna.

The national park is surrounded by the Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary. Gahirmatha Beach and Marine Sanctuary lies to the east, and separates swamp region cover with canopy of mangroves from the Bay of Bengal. Thus it becomes a vicinity of rich biodiversity. The national park and wildlife sanctuary is inundated by a number of rivers – Brahmani, Baitarni, Dhamra, Pathsala and others.

It lies in the north eastern coast of Odisha in between 20° 30’ to 20° 50’N latitude and 86°30’to 87°06’E longitude in Kendrapara district. It is mainly confined to the deltaic regions of river Brahmani and Baitarani.

Attraction must be visited by Visitors at Bhitarakanika

Bhitarakanika is popular for Salt Water Crocodile. Some of the crocodiles are of 23 feet in length. You will find other reptiles like the Water Monitor Lizard and the King Cobra apart from crocodiles. Another attraction of this place is spotted deer and Wild Boars. Eight varieties of Kingfishers are found.

One can enjoy the boat ride from Khola to Dangmal or vice. Khola is one of the gateways into the park. The best time to travel this place is early morning or before sunset.

Bhitarkanika has a very famous historical and cultural past. King of Kanika was used to come to this place for hunting. The hunting towers and artificial watering holes can be seen at many places including Bhitarkanika trail and at Dangmal. It is also the home of medieval Hindu. But the major attraction is the wildlife.

Attraction One must Explore near Bhitarakanika

Chandbali used to be a famous port during the medieval times but now it is a popular tourist spot. From Chandbali, you can visit many nearby places like Dhamra, Aradi and Nalitapatia by boat.

Dangmol is another place which houses the rarest White Crocodile Sankhua. Other than animal life, you can see a good variety of bird life including migratory birds. Open Billed storks, Kingfishers, Whistling Teals, Sand Pipers, and Sea Gulls are the migratory birds here. Another very exciting thing to watch out for is the Olive Ridley Sea Turtles at Gahirmatha.

By Air: The nearest airport is Bhubaneswar airport which is located at a distance of 15o km.

By Train:  Bhadrak and Cuttack railway stations are the nearest railway stations.

By road: One can get regular buses and taxis from Bhabrak to Bhitarakanika.

Bhitarkanika is a mangrove forest in India's Odisha state. It is off the beaten track and offers sea, sand and adventure. The Bhitarkanika group of islands in northeastern Odisha offers great beaches, trekking trails through forests teeming with wildlife, and some thrilling boat rides.

Fauna species found in Bhitarkanika include: saltwater crocodiles, olive ridley turtles, kingfishers, several varieties of birds, pythons, monitor lizards, wild boar, hyenas, spotted deer, wildcats and jungle fowl.

Flora is in the form of mangrove species. There are over 60 varieties of mangrove species in Bhitarkanika, more than what you can find even in Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forests.

Climate [ edit ]

Best season: October–March Monsoons are just amazing here. Once access roads (under construction) are built, Bhitarkanika (on Dangmal side) can be a real good place to explore and enjoy monsoon. Boating in rivers in rain has its own joy.

The forest is closed from 14 May to 31 July. But the wide rivers are enough to keep you glued to place. Add some trekking by the side of mangrove forests spread in so many villages.

Bhitarkanika is beautiful even in summer. It should be explored not just as a place where you find crocodiles. It is almost like nature's paradise. It is quite, peaceful and so green. Above all, it is relatively less hot than other areas in Odisha. Evenings are soothing and pleasant.

From Kolkata

By train from Howrah to Bhadrak (297 km). From Bhadrak take a vehicle to Chandbali. It is better, however, now not make Chandbali its base. It is better to stay on the other side of the river where the real fun lies. Cross the river in boats and stay in a resort on the other side of the river. The Bhadrak to Chandbali road is not in good shape; instead, you can drive to Dhamra and cross over by boat and check in a resort there. It is also a good idea to get down at Cuttack instead of Bhadrak. The time and cost you have to bear to reach the resort near Dangmal from Cuttack are more or less the same as you will have to bear if you come from Bhadrak.

From Bhubaneswar & Cuttack

Khola is the main point of entrance to explore the forest on boats. From Bhubaneswar, you can reach directly to Khola by your own car. Bhubaneswar to Khola is 150 km. From Cuttack, Khola is 120 km and can be reached in three hours.

Fees and permits [ edit ]

Entrance fee for Indians ₹20/person and for foreigners ₹1000/person. If the number of foreigners is 10 or more in numbers, entrance fee per person for them will reduce to ₹200/person. Fee for still camera is ₹50. For video cameras the fee is ₹1000.

Get around [ edit ]

Go in the creeks on boat for sightseeing. Crocodiles, wild boars, spotted deer and lots of birds would be visible. Go and see crocodile breeding centre. You should visit Baggahan Bird Sanctuary inside the National Park. Wide array of bird varieties will leave you wondering how and why so many birds live in this part of the forest.

Visit Ekakula and Habalighati islands. This should be a whole day excursion. You must make it a point to go on nature treks permitted inside the forest area and also outside the forest area. Do not forget exploring some of the lesser explored beaches. Beach in Pentha village is one such beach. Do try to explore Hukitola as well.

Make Bhitarkanika your base to explore the Buddhist sites of Lalitgiri, Ratnagiri and Udaygiri.

Bhitarkanika is home of India's largest remaining population of the endangered Indian salt water crocodile. Bagagahan Bird Sanctuary is a part of Bhitarkanika National Park. It is a home to so many bird varieties, some being rare. It is the only place where you can find eight varieties of kingfisher. Also keep an eye over large monitor lizards, pythons, hyenas, spotted deer and a lot of snake varieties. In winters you can spot river dolphins as well.

The beach, also known as Garhimatha, is famous as the nesting ground of Olive Ridley turtles. They are an endangered species, and wildlife conservationists have of late mounted special efforts to save from poachers the hundreds of thousands of turtles that land here every winter to lay eggs. The turtles, ancient creatures of the deep seas, have been homing in on remote Garhimata every nesting season (January–March) for perhaps thousands of years; it was only a few decades ago that the nesting ground was discovered by conservationists.

Go to Ekakula and Habalighati. Try some unexplored beaches in and around Bhitarkanika. Pentha village has one such beach. Hukitola is another unexplored area.

Go for nature treks.

Angling can be a real fun in this area for rivers in Bhitarkanika is full of fish varieties.

Bird watching can be real learning curve here for some rare varieties have made Bhitarkanika their home.

Do look for cycling in the countryside - an activity with lots of potentials here but something hardly anyone does here.

Buy [ edit ]

You can buy a pair of binoculars beforehand. Carrying binoculars with you can be a good idea if you want to catch a glimpse up close of the fauna, especially the wetland birds.

Eat [ edit ]

There is no need to carry your own provisions from Chandbali any more. Restaurant is available at Dangmal where you can eat. You cannot eat non-vegetarian foods here, nor can you drink here. Best bet is to eat at Riverine Resort. They can give you all sorts of foods - prawns, crabs, fish, chicken, eggs or lamb. They can serve you drinks too, but, of course, at a higher price!

Lots of coconut water. They are available here in plenty. You can drink lots of beer too!!

How to Reach

The most convenient way to reach Bhitarkanika National Park for those travelling from outside the state or overseas is to fly into Biju Patnaik International Airport located in the capital city Bhubaneswar . It is around 145 km away from the entry points to the park, which is easily accessible via buses and taxis available outside the airport.

Bhadrak Railway Station is the nearest railhead from Bhitarkanika National Park, which is situated roughly 45 km away from Chandbali, from where travellers can get a boat to reach Bhitarkanika. Some people choose to travel to Cuttack Railway Station instead while journeying by train, which is a little further away but has more connectivity to the rest of the country.

Buses are easily available to both Khola and Gupti, the two main entry points to Bhitarkanika, from Bhadrak, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. Locals can choose to drive to these destinations by themselves as well. The river ports Chandbali and Jayanagar are 52 km and 70 km away from Bhadrak respectively, from where visitors can hire boats to reach Bhitarkanika in a couple of hours.

Winter (October – February):

Winter in the region of Bhitarkanika National Park is the most ideal weather to visit the sanctuary. With temperatures that rarely go below 16⁰C, the climate remains cool and enjoyable all through the season. Summer (March – September):

Where to Stay

Visitors will find a guest house run by Orissa Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) in Chandbali called Aranya Nivas, which is one of the most common stopover points for people travelling to Bhitarkanika. There are also Forest Department guest houses within the park itself where guests can spend a couple of days, including one on the Habalikhoti Island that is a few hours’ boat ride away from Chandbali. Food is mostly restricted to whatever is available in these guest houses, but visitors are assured of freshly cooked decent meals and clean rooms. Most of these places can be booked beforehand, which helps in the planning of a trip to a large extent.

Three rivers flow out to sea at Bhitarkanika, forming a tidal maze of muddy creeks and mangroves. This is India’s second-largest mangrove region, and most of the 672-sq-km delta that forms this wonderful sanctuary is a significant biodiversity hot spot. The only way to get around most of the sanctuary is by boat, and the main reason to come is to spot crocodiles and birds (particularly at the heronry site of Bagagahana).

Long-snouted gharials, short squat muggers, and enormous estuarine crocodiles (or ‘salties’) bask on mud flats here through the day, diving into the water for cover as your boat chugs past. One particular 7m beast even made the Guinness World Records some years ago. It’s also worth knowing that this area has the highest concentration of king cobras found anywhere in India, as well as half a dozen other potentially deadly viper species.

The best time to visit is from December to February (note that the sanctuary remains shut for a week in January for the annual crocodile census). You’ll see crocs throughout the year, and may also see monitor lizards, spotted deer, wild boar and all sorts of birds, including eight species of brilliantly coloured kingfishers. Herons arrive in early June and nest until early December, when they move on to Chilika Lake, while raucous open-billed storks have set up a permanent rookery here. A short walk through the mangroves from one of the docks inside the sanctuary leads to a birding tower. There is also a 5km nature walk along one of the islands, though that's best done on weekdays when there are fewer visitors.

The park entrance is hidden within the mud-hut village of Dangamal. Tour boats depart from the pier at Dangamal for 3½-hour safaris in the early morning and then at midday. A single ticket costs ₹250, or you can charter the entire boat for ₹3000.

Flora and Fauna

Throughout the year a number of tourists mainly come here to catch a sight of saltwater crocodile which the park has in abundance and are also the star attractions of this place. Apart from the crocodiles, the park is also a prime habitat centre of several other species of animals including Indian python, black ibis, rhesus monkey, cobra, chital darter, monitor lizard, wild boar and olive ridley turtles, fishing cat, spotted deer, hyena, dolphin, porcupine, sambar, terrapin. As per 2014 survey, Bhitarkanika includes 1872 spotted deer, 1522 jackals, 305 common langurs, 1213 wild boars, 17 sambars, 10 foxes, 12 hyenas, and 7 wolfs. Not just for the nature crawlers or wildlife buffs, the national park is an eminent tourist attraction in Odisha also for bird lovers. The fauna of the place is flourishing with many migratory birds. Kingfisher, hornbill, woodpecker, brahminy seagull, tern, white-bellied sea eagle, bar-headed, and waders are some of the feathered creatures you can expect to see here at Bhitarkanika National Park. However, the flora of the park is made up of thick Mangrove forest, which sprawl in the whole region, indigo bush, casuarinas.

Bhitarkanika National Park

Bhitarkanika National Park is situated in the Kendrapara District on the state of Odisha, India. Spread across an area of 672 km 2 of the mangrove swamp situated on the delta formed by the three rivers namely Brahmani, Baitarani and Dhamra. The National Park houses an array of creeks, backwaters, estuaries, deltas and mudhuts. The region has truly preserved and maintained the region's geomorphic and ecological balance.

Established in the year 1998, the park is surrounded by the Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary. The mangroves are separated from the Bay of Bengal by the Gahirmatha Beach that lies in the eastern part. This beach is the nesting grounds by hundreds of Olive Ridley Sea Turtles and thus is a protected UNESCO site. Bhitarkanika National Park truly plays a vital role in promoting eco-tourism in Odisha.

The Bhitarkanika national park is home to over 70 species of Mangrove that is spread across the forest region, park, swamps, marshy lands, ceeks etc. Some of the other flora comprises The Spia, Casuarinas & Sundari and Indigo Bush grasses. Apart from this, trees of Teak, Hair, Babul, Salaia, Bamboo, Zizphus, Palas and Kauriculata also cover some part in the national park.

Bhitarkanika National Park is home to an array of avifauna such as Asian Open Bills, Darters, Egrets, Woodpecker and so on. Additionally, the park is flocked with Ibis & Cormorants, White Bellied Sea Eagle, Brahmany Ducks, Sea Gull, Hornbill, Waders and Bar Headed Geese. Apart from these species, the park is also home to eight varieties of Kingfishers.

Owing to the keen efforts of the national park authorities, this protected area had been successful in protecting Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) and White Crocodile. Some other species that the park houses are Indian Pythons, Rhesus Monkeys, Black Ibis, Darters, Wild Pigs, Cobras, Water Monitor Lizards, Wild Boars, Chitals and Spotted Deer.

The two main entry points to Bhitarkanika are Khola and Gupti. An array of boat services run by the private sector and the forest department can be availed to reach the Bhitarkanika National Park.

The Bhitarkanika National Park in Odisha’s Kendrapara district, which was closed due to the COVID-19 situation, is now open

Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park is known as the “Mini-Amazon” of India. Lying on the coast of Bay of Bengal, it is the second-largest Mangrove of our country after Sundarbans. The land of lush green mangroves, migrating birds and olive ridley turtles, the dangerous saltwater crocodiles, tranquil surroundings by the chirping of birds, and the lush green nature, entrails visitors from near and far off places to witness this unique place of tourist importance. This ecosystem harbors the highest number of saltwater crocodile population in the Indian sub-continent of about 1600 estuarine crocodiles. Sighting of Crocodiles, Deer’s, Wild pigs and thousands of colorful birds including winter migrants from central-Asia and Europe is a very common view here in Bhitarkanika. More than 10 species of Herons are seen nesting on hundreds of trees. Most of the Birds are Asian Openbill, Black Ibis, Cormorants, Darters, etc. The Hawksbill and leatherback turtles, King Cobra, Sambar, Chital, Fishing cats, Leopard cats, Mudskippers, Limulus crab, etc. are common to the landscape. Bhitarkanika is Bird’s paradise. More than 170 species of resident and migratory birds are found here every year, six species of Kingfishers and many more also are seen in large flocks. The beauty lies in its unique natural surroundings. Tide marks on the sand, footprints of animals under the unbroken canopy offers a splendid view of nature. It is the only Marine Sanctuary of the state and is the world’s most important nesting location for Olive Ridley Sea turtles. View of Bottle-Nose Dolphin’s, Irrawaddy Dolphin’s and Finless Porpoise Dolphin from different beaches of Bhitarkanika is worth watching once in a lifetime. More than ninety varieties of mangroves and its associates are found in this Sanctuary. Surrounded by rivers on the three sides and the sea on the fourth, Bhitarkanika is crisscrossed by numerous creeks and canals which finally meet the sea and make the estuarine delta. Entry to the national park cost 40 per person.

By road: The area accessible by road is via Rajnagar & Chandbali.

By Train: 117 KM away from Cuttack Junction Railway Station almost 169 km away from Bhubaneswar railway station. Bhadrak is the nearest railway station near Bhitarkanika which is almost 55 km’s away from the national park.

By Air: Bhitarkanika is 146 KM away from Biju Patnaik International Airport. You may book a cab from the airport itself through ola or uber.

Notably, Bhitarkanika National Park has been closed since March 17 due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Kendrapara: The Bhitarkanika National Park in Odisha’s Kendrapara district will remain closed for tourists from today till July 31 in view of the mating and nesting season of saltwater crocodiles.

Tourists will not be allowed to visit the national park during the breeding season of the crocodiles.

The restrictions are imposed every year during the season as sound created by boats carrying tourists can disturb the reptiles and make them violent.

Such restrictions will be imposed at Bhitarkanika, Dangamala and Ragadapati forest blocks.

Local forest dwellers have also been prohibited from entering the area for collection of honey and wood.

3-Month Ban On Entry Of Visitors To Odisha’s Bhitarkanika Begins Today

Kendrapada: The three-month ban on entry of tourists to Bhitarkanika National Park in Kendrapada district for the mating and nesting season of saltwater crocodiles began on Wednesday.

The ban will be effective till July 31.

The prohibition is usually imposed at Bhitarkanika, Dangamala and Ragadapati forest blocks of the wildlife sanctuary to allow disturbance-free annual nesting of crocodiles, which lay eggs near the water bodies of the mangrove forest and guard them till the emergence of hatchlings. The restriction on tourists is necessary to ensure that the estuarine crocodiles are not disturbed during this season.

“The sound of mechanised boats ferrying tourists and forest officials will disturb the crocodiles. Once the reptiles get disturbed during the nesting and breeding period, they become more violent and the majority of crocodile attacks take during the nesting season,” assistant chief conservator of forests, Bhitarkanika, Manas Das told then media.

He further said that forest guards have been asked to keep a watch on the movement of the female crocodiles. “Local forest-dwellers also illegally enter the forest to collect honey and wood, which disturbs the reptiles. To prevent the entry of villagers, the forest department has restricted the movement of people in the forest areas,” Das added.

A female crocodile lays 50 to 60 eggs in a nest, which is built using mangrove twigs, leaves and mud and is usually at a higher altitude to ensure direct sunlight and prevent it from getting flooded during the rainy season. Out of 500 eggs, only one hatchling becomes an adult.

Ban on entry of visitors to Bhitarkanika National Park in Odisha from May 1

KENDRAPARA: The three-month ban on entry of tourists and visitors to Bhitarkanika National Park during the mating season of saltwater crocodiles will come into force from Wednesday.

The ban will be effective till July 31. Assistant conservator of forests (ACF), Bhitarkanika Manas Das said the restriction is being imposed to ensure that the estuarine crocodiles are not disturbed during their breeding season by visitors.

Besides, the sound of the mechanised boats carrying tourists and forest officials also disturb the crocodiles. “Once the reptiles get disturbed during nesting, they become more violent and majority of the crocodile attack incidents occur during the breeding season,” said the ACF.

Many locals illegally enter the forest areas to collect honey and wood, thereby disturbing the reptiles. To prevent the entry of villagers, the department has restricted the movement of humans in the forest areas. Das said the female crocodiles lay eggs inside mangrove forests near water bodies of the park and guard the eggs till the emergence of hatchlings. Forest guards have been directed to keep watch on the movements of mother crocodiles.

The nests are usually prepared with mangrove twigs, leaves and mud on high grounds which cannot be inundated during high tide and flood besides facilitating exposure to direct sunlight. A female crocodile lays 50 to 60 eggs in a nest, informed noted crocodile researcher Sudhakar Kar.
