Mountains of Crete

Crete is a one of the most mountainous islands of Europe with high mountain ranges crossing the island from West to East. They are composed of limestone. The geological upheavals which created basins and plateaus also formed a large number of impressive caves, many of which were used for religious purposes during antiquity. The mountains of Crete make up a section of the Dinaric -Taurus chain, which starts in the Dinaric Alps and comprises the mountains of Albania, Pindus, the Peloponnese, Kythira - Antikythira, Crete, Karpathos and Rhodos, and ends in Taurus in Asia Minor.

Mountain regions of Crete

On Crete these massifs form three large mountain complexes and in between some lower mountains and semi-mountainous zones. The biggest mountain range is in Western Crete, the White Mountains or "Lefka Ori” with the Pachnes (2453m) as its highest peak.  In the middle of the island  Mount Ida , a single elongated mountain mass whose highest peak is Timios Stavros (2456 m.), the highest point in Crete. In eastern Crete there are the  Dikti Mountains  with the highest peak of 2148m. Other ranges are Asterousia in the south of the island, Tripti in the east and the Kedros Massif in the middle of Crete.

The mountains in Crete are the best to explore on foot. You can do beautiful day trips in these mountains; make long hikes for several days or make a long trekking; for example along the long distance path  the E4 . If you like to do mountain walks on your own, a good  guide book is of Loraine Wilson, High Mountains of Crete. In this book you find many day walks and several suggestions for trekking tours are described in this book.

White Mountains

The White Mountains or Lefka Ori dominates the landscape of West Crete. They are made of limestone and called White Mountains because they are covered in snow until late in the spring. In the summer, the sun reflected on the limestone summits makes them appear white as well. The highest summit is Pachnes (2453 m) and there are over 30 summits higher than 2000 m. Known are the many  gorges  in this Mountain Range with the  Samaria Gorge  being the most famous one.

Another characteristic of the mountains are the high plateaus in the centre of the mountains. The best known is the plateau of Omalos which is a round plain surrounded by mountains, at an altitude of 1100 m. There are only a few roads leading into the mountains so the best way to experience the White Mountains is by walking!

Mt Kastro (2219 m) in the east part of the White Mountains

There are two detailed walking  maps  of the White Mountains which are essential when you go up there! It is a rough area with few water and few people up there so experience with mountain walking is advisable!

PACHNES (2453 m)

The Pachnes is the highest peak in the White Mountains, only 3 metres lower than the Psiloritis, or Ida (the highest peak of Crete). The easiest way to reach the top is to set off by jeep or pickup from Anopolis until the end of the dirt track. It is a very spectacular ride that will bring you through the 'Madares', a moon landscape with many potholes! From here starts a path (well marked with E4 signs) that leads you to "Rousies" (1900 m). Here the E4 continues and you follow the signs up towards the top of the Pachnes.

Towards the top of Timios Stavros (Psiloritis; 2456 m)

Ida Mountains

In the middle of the island you find Mount Ida, or Psiloritis, a single elongated mountain mass whose highest peak is Timios Stavros (2456 m) , the highest point in Crete.  The Ida mountains are located in the prefecture of Rethymnon. On its slopes lies the cave Idaion Andron, in which, according to legend, Zeus was born. On the south side of the mountain massive is the green Amari valley. Interesting features are the plateau of Nida and the forest of Rouva on the east side. The observatory of the University of Crete is located on the secondary peak Skinakas at 1750 m.

To reach the summit of Timios Stavros (Psiloritis) there are basically 3 ways. The classic route is from the east side from the Nida Plateau following the E4 long distance trail . It is a long hike of about 9 hours and 1300 m altitude. but technically not difficult. From the north side from the mountain refuge Migero is the

shortest route. You start at almost 1600 m and walk along a steep but clear path towards the summit. A long and hard route is from the south side from the village Fourfouras passing the Toubotos Prinos Mountain refuge. At least a 10 hours tour!

Dikti Mountains

In the prefecture Lassithi the Dikti Mountains is the main mountain range. The highest peaks are Mt Spathi (2148 m) , Mt Afentis Christos (2141 m) and Mt Lazaros (2085 m). The mountains dominate the Lassithi plateau, at an altitude of 850 m, is the largest plateau of Crete. Especially in the past is was famous for its many windmills! It is a place with a long history. Here is the   Diktaion Antron, a cave where -according to the Mythology-   Zeus   was born. The Lassithi Plateau is a nice place for different excursions and you can start many different walks! Other smaller plateaus in the Dikti Range are  Katharo, Limnakaro, Lapathos, Omalos and Nisimos.

Several gorges are found in the range of Lassithi. Apart from the two gorges named Havgas at Katharo and Kalamafka, there are more canyons such as Sarakina, Adrianos, Ambelos, Roza and Kritsa.

Dikti Mountains and in front the Lassithi plateau

To climb to the summit of Mt Spathi, you can start from the village of Agios Georgios and follow the path (E4) leading to the small plateau of   Limnakaro . From here you keep following the E4 into the Dikti Mountains. At the Selie pass you leave the E4 to climb the summit of Spathi. It is a tough walk with quite a lot of loose rocks. From Agios Georgios and back the tour takes about 9-10 hours. Starting from Limnakaro makes the tour about 2,5 hours shorter! There is also a mountain shelter (at Strovili) above the Limnakaro plateau from where hikers ascend to Spathi!

The typical conical shape of Mt Kofinas

Asterousia Mountains

The Asterousia Mountains are the most southern range in Crete and even of Greece. It runs parallel to the south coast of Heraklion Prefecture, forming a natural wall between the Libyan Sea and the Mesara plain. The Asterousia Mountains run from Maridaki, east of Pyrgos, and Charakas to Matala in the west

The highest peak in the Asterousia Mountains is  Mt Kofinas (1231 m.) which was during Minoan time an important peak sanctuary. The Asterousia Mountains are named after the local king Asterion, who married Princess Europa at the command of her lover, Zeus. The average altitude very high, but access is quite tough because the terrain is very rugged, with many gorges and canyons. Asterousia main features are the warm temperatures, rare rainfalls and very low vegetation. The bare mountains with sharp rocks and steep cliffs gives a very special character to this region!

Tripti Mountains

The Tripti Mountain Range is located in the Lassithi prefecture in East Crete. The highest peak of Tripti mountains is called Stavromenos (1476m) . The mountains are covered by beautiful pine forest and are known for some very wild and inaccessible gorges like the gorge of Ha and Mesonas Gorge. Other nice green gorges are the Pefki, Mylonas and Orino gorge.

The small summer village Tripti is only inhabited in the summer period or in weekends. From here starts the ascent of the the highest peak Stavromenos.

At the north west side you find the beautiful village of Kavousi with nearby the huge olive tree of Azorias and some interesting Minoan excavations and many beautiful ancient donkey trails.

Guided Hiking Crete & Santorini

We had a wonderful time in Greece. The arrangements were excellent. The hiking trips were fantastic and the food was some of the best that I had ever had. Truly an awesome adventure that I would recommend to anyone.

Family Adventure holidays in Crete

We enjoyed our holidays in Crete so much that we are already planning to return next year

Caroline V.

We want to thank you for organizing a great trip - we thoroughly enjoyed our time on Crete

Une journée avec des paysages à couper le souffle. Des guides très professionnels et rassurant. Une expérience au top . je recommande sans hésitation. à bientôt

Jennifer Jny

We did canyon hike using ropes (rappelling) with Fondas, the manager of Cretan adventure. Fondas is a super professional rappeller and a charming person. Highly recommended!

Thanks for a great experience. For a person like me who did it for the very first time the beginning was a Little bit scary but our guide, Kostas, was so calm and patient that I had a really great time and felt super safe. See You next time somewhere on Crete!

Renata Słowik

Just a quick note to say how much we enjoyed the trip and in particular how amazing Fondas has been. He checked in with us regularly and was able to be very flexible with arrangements when we changed our plans because of the heat. It was a shame not to be able to walk the Samaria gorge but it was closed due to extreme heat. Not sure we would come again to walk in August (!) but we will definitely come again to walk. It is a beautiful place and Fondas is clearly extremely well connected and respected by all the hotel owners. He was a delight to deal with and we cannot thank you enough for making sure everything went smoothly.

We would be more than happy to give words of recommendation for Utracks and Fondas.

Knowing how hot it was in Crete I am following with sadness and worry the situation in Greece. I hope Crete is still avoiding the fires.

Simon & Ruth Packard

Rock climbing in Agiofarago

We had a fantastic day with Cretan Adventures in September, rock climbing in Agiofarago combined with a short excursion to the beach. We climbed with three guides (we were a group of 6) and there was a great variety of pitches for all skill levels. The guides were fantastic and made the whole experience safe and fun. The time passed way too quickly and this was one of our highlight in Crete.

Arranged cycling Crete

We have used Cretan Adventures 4 times. It is the Best private cycling trip we have ever tried. Everything is perfect. And excellent service during the trip. We really recommend!

SKI TOURING CRETE

Just finished an amazing week in Crete including ski touring with Konstantinos Marmatzakos of Cretan Adventures. They were wonderful at providing an itinerary that matched the locations and days (Psiloritis and Lefka Ori) when I could ski! They even helped out when I was unable to bring my own skis! Kostas was a great guide, making good decisions in exciting weather conditions, and we managed to find the best snow on the last run--right near the top of the Samaria Gorge! I wholeheartedly recommend Cretan Adventures and Kostas! Great times all around, and I will definitely be back!

Travis Burke

Today we had the best time of our vacation in Crete! It felt like we were on the top of the world! All thanks to our wonderfull and friendly guide Konstantinos!

Thank you for giving us an amazing day!

Valerie Parmentier

Rock Climbing in Agiofarago

The rock climbing day with Cretan Adventures was great. We had an experienced guide and the day was just perfect. We could climb as often as we wanted and the tour was well fitted for our level of competence. The site was very nice as well located in a canyon close to the sea with caves and a chapel nearby.

Lara Behnke

We went on a three-day ski touring trip with Cretan Adventures and I cannot say enough good things. It was amazing! To start, Cretan Adventures was so accommodating when planning the trip and quick to respond to all our questions. We booked everything pretty last minute, but they helped us make it the trip we wanted. Our guide was phenomenal. From the moment George picked us up at the airport, we could tell it was going to be a great match. While he is one strong athlete, he had no problem taking to our slower pace to include morning sparkle dawning and mid-day dance parties. He was so knowledgeable, and patient and made it so we could just focus on having the time of our lives. He helped us master kick turns, made us mountain tea, and took incredible photos along the way. Even though our trip was only 4 days with Cretan Adventures, they remained so helpful throughout our time in Crete, offering suggestions for places to eat and things to do. All four of us are telling anyone who will listen to book a trip with Cretan Adventures. It was a once-in-a-lifetime trip that we will never forget. Thank you, Cretan Adventures!!!!!!!!

You can often see white mountains, sea, Akrotiri peninsula and the city of Chania from the same location.

Mountain bike tour: villages in the hinterland of Georgioupolis

Mountain bike tour: villages in the hinterland of Georgioupolis

Beautiful villages hide directly in the hinterland of Georgioupolis. In less than 25 km you can experience beautiful landscapes, mysterious churches, an amazing castle and a Kafenio that seems to sink into bougainvillea. And of course there are nice Cretans on top of that. Decide for yourself if you want to do this short tour by car, motorbike or mountain bike.

Round trip through hilly country at the northern foot of the White Mountains

You can experience a particularly beautiful gorge from the comfort of your car and make a stop in a mountain village, which is of particular importance for Crete's recent history.

Round trip through the Amari valley in Rethymno

On this tour you will experience a very rural and green Crete off the main roads. You cross through the Amari valley, which begins southeast of Rethymno and always within sight of the Psiloritis, the highest island mountain range, almost down to the south coast.

Villages between the mountain massif Psiloritis and the Cretan Sea

The best 5 road trips in Crete: go on a driving adventure around the island

Plan your driving routes with out guide to road trips in Crete © EMS-FORSTER-PRODUCTIONS / Getty Images

Crete 's mountains, beaches, monasteries, wineries, unspoiled villages and Venetian old towns are some of the highlights you'll enjoy on these five road trips. Each one delves deep into the island's best bits and all of them can be done in a day.

Many of these driving routes follow sinuous mountain roads, so don't expect to get anywhere quickly. On the plus side, this means you get the time to savor the countryside as it passes by your window.

Southwest Hania Province is the best road trip for remote beaches and natural beauty

Hania round-trip; 96km (60 miles)

Southwestern Crete has the island's most stunning natural beauty. It's a tangle of mountain roads twisting and curving between bucolic villages, orchards of olive trees, deep rocky ravines and sheer peaks. This route is punctuated by some of Crete's most beautiful beaches. It's an all-day adventure, so leave early from Hania and plan on slow-going and frequent stops – which is really the point.

Stop first at Lakki, an unspoiled village with 360-degree views and a lovely old church. Continue to hidden Omalos and take a gander at the world-class Samaria Gorge (if you're following the rest of this road-trip itinerary you don't have time for the full trek, just go 2km/1.2 miles in and return). Backtrack slightly and cross the Omalos Plateau to Agia Irini Gorge . Walk a bit of the trail to get a sense of the lush foliage and drive on through traditional villages like Rodovani and Temenia. Near the coast, Azogires has caves and waterfalls. Hit the beaches at Paleohora and then do the long loop over to the trip's crowning glory: the pinkish-white sands of Elafonisi . Next, head to the beautiful Moni Hrysoskalitissas Monastery and then follow the west coast north through the isolated Innahorian villages and Sfinari . Make your final stop for sunset at the beach at Falasarna . From here it's a straight shot back to Hania.

Aerial view of an old fortress on the hill with a road running along the coast

Amari Valley is a great road trip through unspoiled mountain villages

Rethymno round-trip; 150km (93 miles)

Psiloritis Natural Park in central Crete encompasses religious, cultural and natural splendor in a designated Unesco Global Geopark. Within the sprawling park is Mt Psiloritis, Crete's highest peak (2456m/8058ft), visible throughout the region. One of the park's must-sees is the Amari Valley, a heady mix of traditional villages, olive groves and fruit orchards. With frequent stops, this is an all-day road trip, so set off from  Rethymno early.

Leave Rethymno on the coast road and make the first stop Moni Arkadiou , the deeply sacred and symbolic monastery. Head south to Thronos, where the Agia Panagia church boasts 14th-century frescoes (ask for the key at the cafe). Wend your way through the fruit trees to Amari, the valley's namesake town, which boasts a beautiful collection of Venetian buildings. Have refreshments at the cafe- and flower-filled main square. Heading southeast, Monastiraki has Minoan ruins, Bizari Basilica dates to the 7th century and Vizari has woodworking shops. Fourfouras is the start of trails up the side of Mt Psiloritis. Turn back north at Apodoulou, which is the site of an ancient Minoan ceremonial building. Gerakari is a market town and if cherries are in season, you'll be delighted. Watch for wild tulips along the road and wind your way to Meronas, another lovely village with a 14th-century church. Now follow a broad river valley back to the coast.

Rows of green vines stretch across the hillsides between white brick houses

Iraklio Wine Country is the best road trip through Crete's vineyards

Iraklio round-trip; 45km (28 miles)

More than two dozen wineries spread their vines over the gently rolling landscape south of Iraklio . In fact, right about the time you see the Palace of Knossos , the grapes begin. Although short in length, this itinerary can easily fill a day, since the point of the trip is to visit wineries. In addition, spending time at Knossos and the many lovely villages will add even more time. There are genteel tavernas along the route, so finding a suitably delightful stop for lunch with a view of the vineyards will be easy.

The route of the road trip takes you past myriad vineyards, which together produce 70% of Crete's well-regarded wines. Let your mood help you decide where to stop. Note that many tasting rooms operate during business hours, so some may be closed on weekends and from November to March. Two top picks are Boutari and Minos-Miliarakis .

If you've yet to see one of Greece's greatest ancient sites, make Knossos your first stop. Just south of the palace you'll see a double-arched aqueduct from the early 19th century. At Koronekes, stop into the namesake olive oil estate for all manner of exquisite food items. Arhanes is a wine-country hub and the village has a small museum . Detour up Mt Yiouhtas for sweeping views of the region. Back on the loop, you can see a Minoan wine press in Vathypetro . Near the southern boundary of this drive, Houdetsi has an engaging traditional musical instruments museum. Heading back north, Peza is another winery hub and you can choose from several neighboring tasting rooms. Admire Myrtia's beautiful main square and return to Iraklio.

Sunbathers on a sandy beach near the town of Gournia

Eastern Crete is a mountain road trip with Mediterranean views

Agios Nikolaos round-trip; 55km (34 miles)

A web of small roads make sinuous treks through the rocky pinnacles and tree-covered escarpments of the narrow chunk of Crete hemmed in between the Bay of Mirabello and the Libyan Sea. This route takes you far from tourist centers, so even in the busy summer months, you'll savor a more intimate Crete.

Agios Nikolaos is an excellent place to start and end your tour. It has a stunning seaside location and the streets tumbling down to the waterfront are lined with good cafes and tavernas. Head southwest to the hill town of Kalamafka. Just south, climb the 220 steps to the cave chapel at Timios Stavros – the views are worth the sweat. Stop at the preserved village of Anatoli and have coffee outdoors at a cafe. Drive northwest through the hills to Males and turn south into the broad Mythi Valley. The Sarakinas Gorge is worth even a short stroll. Once you reach the coast at Myrtos , follow the signs to Myrtos-Pyrgos, a Minoan hilltop villa. Following the coast road due east, ignore the greenhouses on the left and ponder the sea to the right. Stop off at deserted grey-sand beaches. The port town of Ierapetra is a fine place for a seafood lunch. Head northeast and watch for views of the Ha Gorge, which cleaves the Thripti Mountains. Pause for the Minoan ruins at the villages of Vasiliki and Gournia and then return to Agios Nikolaos.

Drive the North Coast to visit Crete's three best cities

Iraklio–Hania or vice versa; 142km (88 miles)

Many visitors make the journey between Crete's two main cities, Hania and the capital, Iraklio . Many even stop in Rethymno, the Venetian port town roughly midway along the route. This route is designed to highlight the must-see sights in and between these three unmissable Cretan hubs. The busy E75 highway links all three. Dive off it at any time for more sedate local roads, or to simply find a vantage point to gaze at the Sea of Crete.

In Iraklio, the Heraklion Archaeological Museum is open year-round and details the ancient Minoan culture in all its brilliance and beauty. Leaving town to the west, your first potential stop is the Agia Pelagia, which has a lovely beach. The same is true for Bali, although it has several lovely beaches, with varying personalities, from family-friendly to raucous. Next up, Panormo is the most traditional and unspoiled of the north coast beach towns. Rethymno is an unbeatable lunch stop. Roam the ancient center and port. Climb to the Fortezza , the Venetian fortress, then stop into one of the many excellent tavernas for a well-deserved meal. Continuing west, look inland from the E75 for Aptera , the ruins of an ancient city that dates to the 7th century BCE. In Hania, stroll out on the long stone breakwater and take in the views of the beautiful, pastel-colored old town. With extra time, visit the Archaeological and Maritime museums.

1. Archanes

Archanes is a stunningly beautiful part of Crete, situated in the Heraklion regional unit and just 15 kilometres from Heraklion city. Sitting at an elevation of roughly 400 metres, hikers and adventurers alike marvel at the spectacular views it offers between the peaks of Mt. Psiloritis and Mt. Spathi. Visitors can also revel in the beauty of Archanes itself, with its lush green valleys, olive groves, vineyards, and rich history that gave birth to some of Crete’s most impressive monuments.

Archanes Traditional Village

Visiting Archanes from Heraklion is a breeze! You can rent a car directly from the Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport or Heraklion Port to make it an easy 20-minute drive down the highway. If you’d prefer to use public transportation, there are pleasurable daily departures to Archanes from the convenient Heraklion KTEL bus station. Either way, you’ll soon arrive at your destination and enjoy ready access to the vibrant city of Archanes.

Archanes is a captivating, historic village in the beautiful Crete region, and there’s plenty to see and do when visiting. Deeply steeped in history, Archanes makes for an ideal spot to explore archaeological sites where it is possible to uncover the secrets of ancient civilizations. A Minoan palace is believed to have once been located at ‘Turkogeitonia’ in the center of Archanes. At the same time, nearby Vathypetro offers further evidence of an illusive past, with its excavated villa displaying remnants of ancient pottery and relics from the production processes associated with olive oil and wine.

Hillside Archanes Crete

Archanes is more than just a village with some of the most beautiful churches from the Byzantine and Venetian periods. It is also an outstanding example of neoclassical architecture, something quite uncommon in Crete. This remarkable style became popular in Archanes during the 19th century when Crete was still under Ottoman rule. After the liberation of much of Greece following the revolution of 1821, Cretans chose to express their unique cultural identity and solidarity with liberated Greece through neoclassicism – resulting in over 200 listed protected buildings in Archanes today. This makes this mountain village unique and significant.

Much of the restoration efforts have been funded by European assistance, and all works have been conducted with great care and attention to detail – making Archanes a stunningly preserved rural village steeped in historical architecture that stands out as a major tourist attraction on the island. So no matter what type of journey you’re taking on your visit to Archanes, you’ll be sure to take some truly remarkable memories away with you!

Zaros village is best described as a hidden slice of tranquillity nestled away in the mountains of Crete. The nearby lake and gorge provide a tranquil landscape and make it an ideal place to relax away from the hustle and bustle of other places on the island. This part of Crete is loved by locals, who often drive up to enjoy a volta or leisurely walk while taking in all their natural surroundings.

Lake of Zaros in Spring

Zaros lies 44 km from Heraklion, at the southern foothills of Mount Idi – Psiloritis, in an area known as the Kainourgiou region in Moires that’s part of the Heraklion Region. Locals here live off what they produce, such as olive oil, grapes, vegetables, and spring water; there are also traditional water mills still working since the 16th century that can be found here. Additionally, Zaros has many archaeological sites and monasteries to explore around its perimeter.

Zaros Village Crete

The stunning local scenery surrounding the area makes it a wonderful spot to visit, with eye-catching attractions such as fish farms full of fresh trout and salmon, perfect for feasting on delicious traditional local food in a beautiful courtyard. 1.5 km from the village is Lake Votomos, an idyllic spot to picnic and enjoy refreshments at one of the cafes by the lake shore. Rouvas Gorge is part of the Psiloritis mountain range and forms part of the E4 European Walking Path. Take a leisurely stroll among thriving kermes oaks, plane trees, pines, and maples – set against a steep backdrop for an unforgettable time. Experience fresh mountain air and unwind with amazing views to make the stay one you won’t forget!

Anogia’s long and storied history makes it an attractive destination for tourists. The mountain village is located in the heart of the Idi ranges, a mere 39 km from Heraklion Town and International Airport. It has earned a reputation as a resilient and independent place and is renowned for its strength of character and spirit. Though often blanketed in snow during winter, Anogia stands tall amidst the Psiloritis Mountains (Mount Ida) with its peak, Mt Ida, offering visitors the chance to witness the famous Zeus Cave or Ideion Andron and Nida Plateau. All while exploring its Crete folk music heritage — dating back to ancient times—and learning more about the region’s role in World War II when it became a stronghold for Cretan Resistance fighters.

Anogia Village Crete

Taking a visit to the high mountains of Crete can reveal a lot of fascinating cultural insights to visitors. One will have the chance to try their luck at snow sports and experience traditional living up close. From local tavernas serving deliciously fresh food to handmade crafts such as clothes and embroidery – there is something for everyone here. Visitors may even come across sarikia, the headscarf, which is part of the traditional Cretan folk dress. To truly understand the heart of Kriti and her music, one must visit Nikos Xilouris House in Anogia, for it was here that beloved folk musicians Nikos Xilouris and his brother Antonis Xilouris grew up and created music from their families’ rich traditions. A visit to these mountaintop villages offers a glimpse into a life filled with vibrant culture and music immersed in history and tradition. Those on vacation looking to immerse themselves in culture and tradition should certainly include Anogia on their list – this mountain village will leave an extraordinary imprint on all who visit. Do not miss to taste the famous Galaktoboureko Anogion which is a traditional Greek dessert made with layers of phyllo dough filled with a creamy custard mixture and soaked in a sweet syrup. It is a popular dessert in many parts of Greece, including the island of Crete.

Zoniana is a quaint and incredibly charming village with a unique story. Situated 43km away from Heraklion and within close proximity to Rethymnon, the village was founded under the ancient name of Zeus’ Pit – in honour of the God Zeus himself. Those who visit its traditional tavernas can appreciate its natural beauty, which has likely been like this for centuries. Unbelievably Zoniana also houses an amazing museum – the Potamianos Wax Museum – with eighty-seven figures that represent Cretan culture from various eras. It’s easy to see why so many people view Zoniana as one of Crete’s most beautiful places to explore!

Road to Zoniana Village

If you’re looking for an awe-inspiring adventure near the village, look no further than Sfendoni Cave. Located on the mountain road and signposted clearly, this remarkable cave is known for its impressive natural decoration – think magical stalactites, stalagmites, and other captivating rockscapes! But it’s not only the cave that makes a visit to Sfendoni worthwhile – events like ‘Sfentonia’ offer theatrical performances and Zoniana lyricists, while the annual Shepherd and Cheese Festival ensures a unique experience with traditional tastes from this area of Crete. Whatever your reason for visiting Sfendoni Cave, set aside time to take in all this incredible destination has to offer.

5. Krousonas

Krousonas is set in the stunning hills and ravines of the Heraklion region of Crete, just 27 km from the capital. It’s a picturesque village near Mount Psiloritis with traditional architecture, rich cuisine, and local culture. Best known for its centuries-old olive grove and for the ancient plane tree in the village center, Krousonas is also noted for its many churches, some dating back to the Byzantine period. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and tranquil – ideal for restful walks and hiking in more challenging terrain further up into the mountains. With several nearby beaches, lively cafes, and easy access to archaeological sites such as Knossos Palace, Krousonas is a great mountain destination if you plan to visit Crete during the winter.

Krousonas Village

The small mountain village of Krousonas has plenty to offer! Start with the coenobitic Monastery of the nuns of Agia Irini before continuing on to the mountainous region of Livadi, known for its thousands of apple and pear trees. As you meander through Vromonero, be sure to visit its beautiful forest of Prinos. And there’s more! After exploring, don’t miss the chance to re energize at one of the local agritourism infrastructures or traditional taverns featuring amazing food. Finally, enjoy some shopping at “Krousaniotissa”, a Women’s Cooperative selling local products in Krousonas. This is the perfect destination for anyone wanting an authentic Greek experience in a stunningly scenic location!

A great place to stay in Krousonas is Aetovigla Guesthouses. Aetovigla Guesthouses is a charming and welcoming property located in the traditional village of Aetovigla on the island of Crete. It offers a range of comfortable and tastefully decorated guest houses that are ideal for couples, families, and small groups. The guesthouses are conveniently located close to the village center, where guests can find a range of tavernas, cafes, and shops. The property is also an excellent base for exploring the island, with several popular beaches and attractions within easy reach.

Biking Crete

Cycling Crete – Go for the Adventure

Crete – A wild and great island, a continent in itself, with Alpine mountains that require power and stamina if you want to traverse them by bike. But if you go for the adventure, you’ll experience a Mediterranean world full of simple beauty, you’ll pass by lavish chestnut and olive groves, meager rubble deserts and karst landscapes, and push yourself uphill until you hit the unexpected cold temperatures. You’ll suddenly find yourself surrounded by snow, driven by the wind like a mountaineer conquering inhospitable heights, and you’ll yearn desperately for the warmth down in the valley with its orderly stone walls, the scent of herbs, and the roar of the ocean that you can enjoy with a glass of wine in the beach tavern. A mountainous island, a narrow bedrock that separates Europe from the Libyan Sea and Africa in the south. These mountains rose up from the sea about 70 million years ago when dinosaurs still populated our planet. Today, they form a connection between the southern Peloponnesus and Asia Minor and function as a link between the large mountain ranges of the Taurides and the Dinarides. Two tectonic plates meet in Crete. The plate of the African continent slides below Crete (Europe) and shifts its crust as well as the rock formations on top of it, thus creating thrust faults, fracture zones, valleys and folded rocks. Accompanied by the occasional rumbling of earthquakes, the mountains on Crete and the entire surrounding islands continue to expand even today. However, the inhabitants of Crete pay little attention to earthquakes. When I arrived in Chania after a heavy rumbling one day, I talked to a shop owner about the earthquake we had just experienced. He gazed at me in bewilderment and tried to use the tricky loanword I had used: »earthquake«? But his face lit up with excitement when he then told me »We had snow!«, showing me the height of the snow by pointing to chest height. Later on I learned that Chania had had about 10 cm of snow, but the chaos it caused had actually been equal to the measure the shop owner had indicated. The highest peaks in Crete’s 15 individual mountain ranges are about 2.500 meters high. The island is oriented east to west longitudinally. It comprises an area of approx. 8.300 km², is 12 km to 60 km wide and 260 km long. The coastline measures more than 1.000 km. The island is characterized by densely vegetated oak and chestnut forests in the west, smaller cedar and cypress groves, karst deserts in the higher regions, Alpine mountains, plateaus and fertile valleys, unusual caves and canyons that you often hear very exciting stories about, as well as deserts and jungle. In Crete, you encounter a continent’s worth of extreme contrasts in a country surrounded by the sea.

Small traditional fishing village of Mochlos, Crete, Greece.2C2G86A Small traditional fishing village of Mochlos, Crete, Greece.

Retreat to Crete: why the Greek island is a perfect escape

The unspoilt northeast of Greece’s largest island offers a restorative mix of uncrowded beaches, authentic tavernas and extraordinary views

S ometimes, when you travel, you arrive somewhere so ridiculously picturesque, so dictionary-definition of how you expect the country to look, that you half suspect it was built as a film set, or has been “Disneyfied” specifically for tourists.

I get this feeling when I walk on to the small, horseshoe-shaped bay at Mochlos, Crete. Half a dozen restaurants, all cobalt wooden chairs, whitewashed tables and blackboards offer gyros and freshly caught fish. On the slim strip of stones that fringes the low sea wall, a handful of locals is towelling off after a late dip, the last two heads bobbing in the metallic blue water, the small, humpy island behind them backlit by the apricot-gold light of the sun, slowly dipping beneath the horizon.

I settle in with a cold Mythos and order up a plate of crispy gyros, fresh pitta and tzatziki. As I gaze out over the slowly darkening Gulf of Mirabello, I feel sure that a week here, doing nothing but pottering the 10-minute walk between my hotel, the Mochlos Blue, and this ramshackle clutch of tavernas, would be more restorative than a luxurious spa hotel.

Simply gorgeous: cooling off in the Richtis Gorge – a state-protected park near Exo Mouliana, Sitia, eastern Crete.

But this quiet corner of Crete is well worth exploring. The northeast, home to the Dikti mountains, is one of the island’s last unspoilt stretches of coastline, and a world away from the luxury resorts that scatter the coast around Elounda, and the 1980s sprawling hotels and apartments that characterise places such as Agios Nikolaos.

After a lazy first day, I set out to discover a good local beach (the one thing Mochlos doesn’t have), and follow a recommendation to Tholos, hidden away 3km from the main road.

It turns out to be an absolute treat of a beach: a long strip of sand that is free of sun loungers and parasols, the only shade thrown by a cluster of tamarind trees sheltering a handful of cars. As I step into the water, only one other couple is swimming. The water is sparklingly clear, shoals of tiny fish whisking through the shallows. The mountains loom to the southern end of the beach past one whitewashed house on the small road that leads over the headland to the north.

The swimming is really only an excuse for over-indulgence. Cretan food is arguably the best in Greece, the island’s diverse landscapes producing everything from mountain herbs, greens and tangy cheese to grassily delicious olive oils, freshly caught fish and crispy pastry snacks, such as spanakopita – golden flaky pastry, stuffed with salty feta and herbs. Best of all, because this area of Crete is off the mainstream tourist trail, even the most spectacularly situated taverna rarely gets overrun.

Shady spot: the quiet life in downtown Mirsini.

I head to the village of Mirsini, where a huddle of whitewashed houses clambers up the mountainside and Mochlos is little more than a vague white fringe along a small strip of sea, hundreds of metres below. As I climb the steps of the Taverna Kathodon , I pass circular trays of tomatoes, slowly drying in the sunshine. I emerge on to a series of small terraces, crammed with terracotta pots and mismatched chairs and tables. The bright yellow walls are covered with everything from straw hats to fake flowers and old cooking implements.

The view is so spectacular – great, scrub-faced mountains, the distant outline of Crete’s jagged northern coast like a huge sleeping alligator beside the sea – that it wouldn’t matter if the food was average. Instead, I eat crispy mizithropita – a flatbread stuffed with cheese, hot off the pan and drizzled with honey, and dolmadakia – the most succulent vine leaves I’ve ever tasted.

At the table next to me, an elderly couple is making their way through a carafe of wine, taking pictures to send to their grandchildren. On the other side of the terrace, a Greek family is squabbling over vast plates of meatballs and calamari. Beneath it all, the cicadas keep up their rhythmic chorus. It strikes me I may have reached peak Greek.

after newsletter promotion

All the eating pushes me into deciding to tackle the Richtis Gorge , a short half-hour drive from Mochlos. I take the easy option (although it’s all relative) and drive the steep, twisting road from the upper car park down to the beach, reducing the hike from two hours to about 40 minutes (and cutting out most of the uphill stretches). Even so, it’s quite a clamber and more like a rainforest walk than a gorge. Small waterfalls rush through gashes in the rock, understudies for the main event – a shimmering, aquamarine pool with kinetic tendrils of water hurling down over the rock face above.

Service with a view: a table overlooking the sea in the village of Mochlos.

The Richtis proves to be quite the adventure, justifying my last day of doing little except lazing by the Mochlos Blue’s tranquil pool. The hotel is adults-only (apart from summer school holidays), and with just six rooms it feels more like a spacious villa; the honesty bar is well stocked with snacks, cold beers and local wine, and the small breakfast buffet is complimented each morning by a traditional, homemade treat – scrambled eggs with tomato, spanakopita and, my absolute favourite, loukoumades – deep-fried dough balls, drenched in honey and nuts.

On my last evening, I drive up from the village for supper at the Taverna Natural , where tables are set out in a charming, tree-dotted garden. The view across the Gulf of Mirabello is perhaps one of the most stunning on the whole island. I time it just right for the sunset and watch, transfixed, as the sky flames through an extraordinary palette of colours, the sun burning slowly down towards the purple-auburn mountains. I order a tomato salad and moussaka, the aubergines lying across the dish like silk. The view is extraordinary, the food delicious, the beer perfectly chilled… Would it be wrong to stay another week?

A week at the Mochlos Blue costs from £899, including car hire and B&B accommodation, through Simpson Travel. For more details, go to simpsontravel.com
