Top sights & attractions for cruises to alexandria, bibliotheca alexandrina.

The Library of Alexandria was the largest library of the ancient world and the place where ancient philosophers and scientists came to increase their knowledge. The modern-day version has three floors that provide a complete history of the city, from the ancient Pharaohs to the Greek-Roman period to now. There’s even a planetarium and science museum for kids.

Citadel of Qaitbay

This 15th-century medieval fort was built on the island of Pharos—where the famed Lighthouse of Alexandria once stood—to defend against attacks from the Ottoman Empire. Explore the castle-like structure and enjoy incredible views of the bay from its ramparts. Look for the stones on the outer walls that have a slightly reddish hue. These are the stones from the destroyed Lighthouse of Alexandria that were repurposed.

Alexandria National Museum

Located in a restored Italian-style palace dating to 1926, this museum contains thousands of artifacts that tell the remarkable story of Alexandria and Egypt. You’ll see mummies, pottery, mosaic portraits, jewelry, fabrics, weapons, and more. Stroll through the surrounding garden after your visit to the three-level museum.

Top things to do in alexandria, venture to the great pyramids of giza.

No cruise to Egypt would be complete without a visit to the Great Pyramids of Giza. With an overnight stay in Alexandria, you have plenty of time to see the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still intact. Just outside of Cairo, you’ll find the three main pyramids along with several smaller structures and the Great Sphinx of Giza. All were built between 2600 and 2500 BC.

Shop the Souks & Streets

Venture a few blocks inland from the Corniche to find souks, antique stores, bookstores, clothing stores, and food markets. Bring back souvenirs like loose hibiscus tea, local dates, scarab beetle jewelry, oud incense, or a cozy pashmina. You can even visit a souk to find a craftsman who will paint your name in hieroglyphics on a piece of parchment paper.

Vist Montazah Palace Gardens

Stroll the Montazah Palace Gardens, a serene oasis of nature on the city's eastern edge. Montazah is a lavish garden with majestic palms, manicured lawns, and breathtaking flowers that were all once off-limits to all but royals and their entourage.

Top Food & Drink in Alexandria

On a cruise to Egypt, sample some of the country’s national dishes. Some you may be familiar with, like tahini sesame paste and grilled lamb kebabs. Go on a culinary adventure by trying kushari lentils, macaroni, rice, and chickpeas, the pita-like aish baladi, or a spicy minced lamb called kofta.

Sayadiyah fish is a dish made mainly in coastal cities such as Alexandria. It’s a baked casserole with white fish, yellow rice, onions, spices, and tomato sauce. Dessert can be something as simple as mint tea and baklava, or try Om Ali, which is layers of milk-soaked puff pastry mixed with nuts, raisins, coconut, and sugar, and then baked.

Culture & History of Alexandria

Founded in 331 BCE by Alexander the Great, Alexandria was the most vital cultural center of its time. Pharos, the legendary lighthouse and one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, was built here. So was the Library of Alexandria, where scholars, mathematicians, astronomers, scientists, and philosophers gathered to seek knowledge.

Today, visiting Alexandria is a relaxed, friendly and laid-back experience. Egypt is a predominantly Muslim country. The dress code in Egypt is considered conservative by Western standards, and it is respectful to obey this code. That means no exposed shoulders or knees, and no tank tops or shorts. If you’re visiting a mosque, don’t forget to remove your shoes.

Alexandria Port Facilities & Location

The Port of Alexandria is located on the western side of the Nile River between the Med and Lake Mariout. The recently renovated passenger terminal takes inspiration from Alexandria’s history with the design incorporating Pharaonic architecture and features from the Roman era. It has a variety of cafes and service areas inside and taxis outside that will take you on the short trip to the heart of the city.

Transportation in Alexandria

Within Alexandria, there are a number of transportation options including the tram network, the commuter rail, and public buses. Having the names of places you want to go written down in Arabic as well as English can make it easier for locals to point you in the right direction. Taxis are also abundant, although it’s best to ask a restaurant host or hostess about usual fares as you may have to negotiate with drivers.

Shopping Near the Alexandria Cruise Port

Alexandria’s two main streets—Al Aksander Al Akbar and Ebadah Ibn Al Somet—are lined with shops selling jewelry, clothing, textiles, and home decor. Prices are written in Arabic, so it is a good idea to have a conversion chart app on your smartphone.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency of Alexandria is the Egyptian pound (EGP). You’ll find ATMs scattered throughout the city, and many establishments accept credit cards. Tipping is commonplace here, and leaving a small tip (10% to 15%) at a restaurant or with someone who provided a service is considered extremely polite.

Should I visit Egypt during Summer?

The high season for tourism is all year with winter and spring being peak season for cultural travels with lots of sightseeing. Weather in Egypt is perfect for many kinds of tourism, and if coming in June, July, and August, head for the seaside resorts. Those months are very warm with temperatures that can reach around 45C. and the humidity is about 70 to 80%, but it is bearable with the sea and large swimming pools nearby. So the period of the high summer season is also a bit busy as hotels fill up with tourists from all over the world looking for a bargain, lots of sunshine, diving, snorkeling, etc. It is also a primary vacation time in Europe. If you come in the deep summer season you can still enjoy it because you can always sightsee early in the morning and go again at night when the sunsets. You will definitely need good sunscreen and a lot of liquids to drink with a nice hat on your head. Summer is a good time for people looking for good rates in accommodation and other services.

What is the dress code in Egypt?

Egypt is a Muslim country and the dress code is towards the conservative side, especially for women. That being said, we are used to seeing travelers from all over the world. My suggestion would be to wear light clothes and not to wear short shorts, short skirts and alike to avoid the occasional unwanted stare. But it's really up to you. When you visit religious places (synagogues, churches, and mosques) you do need to cover your shoulders and wear over the knee dresses, if you are planning to wear one of course. If you plan to attend the Nile dinner cruise, there is no need for formal wear unless you want to make that night a special night! Also, you will be sharing this experience with other travelers so you can dress however you feel most comfortable.

How to get visa to visit Egypt?

You can get your visa when you arrive at Cairo Airport. It is an easy process for USA, UK, Canadian, Australian and European citizens. The visa is simply a stamp (like a mail or postage stamp) that you buy from the visa office, at the port of entry just before the immigration booth. The visa will cost you $25 US Dollars and after buying it; you just stick it on any empty page on your passport. Once you have bought your visa you then stand in line to get your passport stamped by the immigration officer. You can also apply for E-Visa via the official electronic visa portal: www.visa2egypt.gov.eg

How many days in Egypt is enough?

Your Egypt Tours travel agency recommends two weeks so that you can enjoy the temples and tombs of Luxor and Aswan, explore the sights of Cairo, and relax in the Red Sea islands and nature reserves.

What is the best Nile River cruise?

There are many Nile cruises. Not to name one but your choice depends on many things to put in mind such as the number of nights you want to spend on the cruiser, your budget, and the standard of the Nile cruise. We recommend you choose a 5-star luxury Nile cruise, and if you are looking for a private Nile River cruise you can choose Dahabiya cruises, it is only for the small-group tour, about 15 people. Most cruises have. There is another way of cruising the Nile, which is the Felucca boat. It is traditional and charming but it is cheap as long as it will be ok to sleep on the deck exposed to mosquitos and most of these boats do not have a toilet

When is best time of the year to travel to Egypt?

The best time to visit Egypt is generally from October to April where it is suitable for outdoor activities and sightseeing.

What destinations are included in Egypt travel?

Egypt travel usually have guided tours to archaeological sites, museums, and historical landmarks. Also have optional activities may include hot air balloon rides over Luxor, snorkeling in the Red Sea, or desert safaris.

Travel has helped us to understand the meaning of life and it has helped us become better people. Each time we travel, we see the world with new eyes.

Absolutely mind blowing. A definite must see. We flew from Aswan after I contact them, as I did not want to sit in car for hours with my 10-year-old daughter. Just so much history and ancient love. You cannot miss this one thing if you are in Cairo. The rocks are just HUGE, so special.

I'm considering booking the 'Caravans in the Sand' shore excursion when my ship stops in Alexandria. If anyone has been on it I would appreciate your feedback. There are two others that go into Cario--I think one is call Medieval Cario and the other Pyramids & the River Nile.

I'm considering booking the 'Caravans in the Sand' shore excursion when my ship stops in Alexandria. If anyone has been on it I would appreciate your feedback. There are two others that go into Cario--I think one is call Medieval Cario and the other Pyramids & the River Nile.   Thanks, Pam

I took this excursion in 2007 when I was sailing on Legend of the Seas (RCCL) - I'm pretty sure the =X= excursion is the same. Here's what I posted last time somebody asked:

We stopped in Alexandria in May, and took the "caravans in the sands" ship tour. Normally I'm a "private tour" kinda guy, but knowing how far away Cairo was I wanted to be sure that the ship wouldn't leave without us if there was a problem. We were off the ship very early, and as you noted rode in a caravan of busses on the long trip to Cairo. From time to time, the guide would narrate about what we were seeing, or about Egypt in general. There was a restroom on the bus, and water was provided. The Visas were all handled by the ship without our intervention.

Everything we saw, with the exception of the final "papyrus institute" fluff shopping stop, was great. My only regret is that there was so much packed into the day that we were really rushed from place to place. We were on a very tight schedule and had to really keep moving to stay to it. In hindsight, I would drop one or two sights to get more time at the others. The desert caravan and camel ride was actually a lot of fun (we got a bit jostled in the caravan, but it was entertaining), and the meal at the "country club" was surprisingly good.

The weather was brutally hot. Except during the caravan and camel ride, the busses were always running and available if you wanted to cool off.

We got back to the ship very late (long after early dinner), but the dining room was kind enough to accommodate our late arrival (we had late dinner, but were late even to that) - we were stinky, dirty and sweaty so we showered and changed before heading down and they were very accommodating.

All in all I'd say the tour was fantastic, with the caveat that I think we tried to do too much in one day. I never worried at all about being a "target" as there were busses of tourists everywhere, and the major sights were literally bursting at the seams with people so it's not like we stood out (quite the opposite, it was sometimes hard to find our bus in the sea of other busses).

The worst part about the trip was not the travel, but the EXTREME aggressiveness of the trinket vendors. For people not accustomed to being literally constantly bombarded with offers to buy, it can be off-putting. The vendors will literally hound you and follow you, some going so far as to actually put products in your hands (I had one fellow rest something on my crossed arms) and then chase you down for payment. Any offer of assistance (photos, directions, information - anything), no matter how genuine appearing, will result in a demand for payment later. One member of our group was actually barred from exiting the sphinx by men demanding money (they got out without paying but it was frightening for them). I understand that these people are very poor and just trying to make a living, and in fact I got some fantastic trinkets from them (far better prices than the papyrus "institute"/store), but forewarned is forearmed.

Would I do it again? Absolutely, though I might choose a tour with fewer stops. I was exhausted by the end of the day.

Other people have already commented on their private tour experiences so I won't go into that. I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time no matter what you choose.

Hi IMNiles,

Thank you for your reply and for pointing me in the direction of the other posts regarding the Caravans in the Sands excursion. I'm taking a Athens to Singapore cruise on Azamara and there just isn't much activity on the Azamara boards, which is why I tried Celebrity. I never thought to look under Ports of Call.

I really enjoyed your pictures, I saw several shots I'd like to duplicate, which will give me time to just look and enjoy, as you suggest.

Thanks again,

Alexandria excursions.

Situated in the north-central part of the country and along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, Alexandria has become Egypt's second largest city. With its colorful history and distinct culture, Alexandria is well worth a visit for anyone intrigued by historical facts, objects, and places. Our Alexandria tours showcase some of the world's most important and famous historical sites. From the Alexandria region, you have the opportunity to tour Cairo and visit the wondrous Pyramids of Giza, in addition to the Egyptian Sphinx. In Egypt, you can also visit the Egyptian Museum, Papyrus Institute, and Egyptian Bazaar. Then there is Alexandria, which is nothing short of incredible itself. This ancient city, founded initially by Alexander the Great, was once the world's leading site for intellect at the height of the Greeks' power. Many historical sites are housed in this city, including the Bibliotheca, a building erected in tribute to the legendary Library of Alexandria.

Alexandria shore excursions, amazing experiences coming soon., sorry, there are no excursions for this port at this moment., things to do in alexandria.

Alexandria's museums house many priceless artifacts from ancient times.

Cultural Collections

Alexandria's museums house many priceless artifacts from ancient times.

Alexandria, Egypt, has a rich and complex history. To get a sense of it, make sure you visit at least one of the city's many museums. The Alexandria National Museum and the Antiquities Museum are heavy hitters, but there's also the Royal Jewelry Museum, a stately manor that harbors a vast collection of awe-inspiring jewels — from priceless diamonds and rubies to rarely seen stones from far-flung places.

The catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa are a showcase of ancient culture

Adventure Underground

The catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa are a showcase of ancient culture

Archaeologists will tell you that an entire world can be buried just beneath your feet. This is true in Alexandria, where impressive tombs and temples have been discovered underground. The catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa are a great example. They form a maze of subterranean burial chambers dating to the Roman era, and taking a tour of these catacombs is one of the best things to do in Alexandria, Egypt. They contain all kinds of spectacular relics that showcase a combination of Egyptian, Roman and Greek cultures.

Alexandria, Egypt, is also home to stunning shorelines sure to please beach lovers.

Shore Up on Beach Vibes

Alexandria sits along the northern coast of Egypt. The city has beautiful golden-sand beaches kissed by the sapphire-blue waters of the Mediterranean fit for sunseekers. One of the prettiest and cleanest beaches is Mamoura Beach, beloved by locals looking to take a break from the bustle of the city. Ice cream and food stands line the quaint cobblestone boardwalk that runs along the beach, and you'll find ample options to rent loungers and umbrellas.

Don't miss Alexandria's fusion cuisine.

LOCAL CUISINE

You'll find delicious food throughout Egypt, but cities along the northern coast — like Alexandria — offer a unique and flavorful fusion of Middle-Eastern and Mediterranean flavors. Snack on some crispy falafel, foul fava bean dip, and warm Baladi bread. You'll find this fare at cafes throughout the city. Or head to Alexandria's seafood market for some amazing catches — shop owners will cook them for you on-site for a small fee. And if you're craving something hearty, try some of Alexandria's famous fondue, typically made from seven kinds of cheese and paired with different meats.

Alexandria's souk district is a treasure trove of unique finds

The best places to shop during cruises to Alexandria, Egypt, are traditional souks — labyrinthine bazaars where artisans, spice traders, jewelers and more display and sell their wares. Alexandria's souk district is located at the westernmost point of Midan Tahrir. This area is always bustling. Its cafes, bakeries and stalls buzz with energy around the clock, especially at night. You'll find everything here including beautifully woven cloth, bangles, souvenirs and sundries.

Tour Name: Experience Egypt Cultural Sightseeing in 10 Days

This was the trip of a lifetime that I was able to have with my eldest son - an absolutely Read More amazing experience. To be able to actually see the places and artifacts that I had read about and studied was truly phenomenal. Our hotels were great, the travel to and from sites was completely taken care of, we never felt unsafe or left to our own devices, and the itinerary was just right. But what made the experience so fab was our two guides - Mahmoud Nour in Luxor/Aswan/Abu Simbel and "Max" in Cairo/Memphis/Saqqara. They taught us history and context as it related to each site we visited and they indulged my myriad questions. They were both so incredibly knowledgeable and my questions were never ignored or unanswered. In addition, they shared their culture with us and treated us to some awesome dining experiences. We were reminded that Egypt is more than just ancient ruins. I would recommend without reservation this tour experience. And "hats off" to Mahmoud and Max!!! I left feeling like I had made some great new friends. And I can't wait to try some home-made kushari. Read Less

They wor Read More k with phenomenal guides (we had Mahmoud Nour in Upper Egypt and Mohsen aka Max in Lower Egypt...I would recommend asking for these guides by name, as they were truly superb), make all the necessary arrangements in terms of drivers, covid testing, hotels, and in-country flights, and can tailor your tour to whatever it is you most want to see. The entire experience was smooth from start to finish. Both Mahmoud and Max spoke excellent English, were extremely knowledgeable, and went out of their way to ensure our experience was everything we hoped it would be. This was the second time I have used ETP, and I will continue to recommend them to anyone who expresses any interest in exploring Egypt. We especially liked that our tour group was limited to only our party, which meant we got one-on-one attention at all the sites, and allowed us to get answers to all our questions. And for those of you who are worried about safety or health in Egypt, in our experience it was extremely safe, and we never had any issues related to COVID-19.
