The Pench River originates in the Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh, after which the famous national park, Baghvan, Pench National Park is named. The 757 sq. km Pench National Park , a dry deciduous forest with teak trees and meandering jungle streams is a relatively unknown, but is a rich part of the Indian biodiversity.

The striking Baghvan Lodge, a beautiful retreat consisting of 12 quaint standalone suites and spacious sitting rooms, has been aptly named after the iconic Bengal Tiger (Bagh—tiger and van—forest). The decor has been designed keeping in mind the ambience of the 50’s. The atmosphere is soothing, owing to the cream-coloured floors, and the copper and pale-turquoise hues. A set of stairs leads up to an authentic jungle rooftop or ‘machan,’ which offers panoramic views of the surroundings. Pench National Park: A safari guide’s tips on the best time to visit, permits, hotels

In the heart of India, the Pench river, a tributary of the Kanhan river, cuts Pench National Park almost perfectly in half. The woodlands of the park are rich with prey species and the watering holes created by the river draw out wild boars, jackals, deer, bison and gaur. And often, lurking in the bushes behind them is the star of the show, the Bengal tiger .

Scattered across the 758 sq km of the park in Madhya Pradesh , tigers are the park’s most powerful predators. The big cats are solitary and strong-willed creatures, willing to traverse long distances to stalk their prey. Sighting one is a quiet and slow game in Pench that requires you to be as inconspicuous as possible. Prabhir Patil—or “Pat”, as he is more commonly known—has perfected the art over decades in the wild. “One can truly understand animals in their natural habitat when they finally ignore your presence,” says the head naturalist and guide at luxury safari lodge Pench Jungle Camp.

Born and raised in Nagpur, Patil grew up visiting the forest every chance he could get. “When I came to Pench in 1997, there was no tar road to reach the Turia gate and not a single resort or lodge in Pench or Tadoba,” he says. “I would just take a bus to Mowgli gate in Tadoba or cycle up to the national park wall because I was so curious.” He would even volunteer with NGOs for census work in the forests, living with forest guards and patrolling the area on foot everyday. “Whenever the jungle would call me, I would go,” he says. Here, Patil draws from his 15 years of experience in guiding and birding to offer insider tips for your next trip to Pench National Park.

What makes Pench National Park special?

Pench used to be a sanctuary and became a national park in 1975. Given the number of tigers it houses, it was established as a tiger reserve in 1992. Though most focus on the part of Pench that lies in Madhya Pradesh, about 40% of the forest lies in Maharashtra . “Guides at Pench typically highlight that there are 33 tigers across about 758 sq km at Pench. I tell tourists there are at least 100 tigers and 100 leopards living in the whole forest area which spans 2,000 sq km across Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Animals don’t see a separation between the two states, it’s all one forest,” says Patil.

Generations of tigers have inhabited the park for decades. The park is also famous for the Collarwali Tigress, who passed away in 2022 after giving birth to 29 cubs in eight litters through her lifetime. She was the first tiger in the park to be fitted with a radio collar, which enabled park officials to study her behaviour. Tiger sightings were rare at Pench before her. But she became the most sighted tigress at the park and would often come close to tourist vehicles. Collarwali Tigress caused a major surge in visitor numbers at Pench and was well-loved among wildlife enthusiasts.

What to spot at Pench National Park?

The Bengal Tiger is undoubtedly the star attraction at Pench. It’s been 22 years since Patil saw his first tiger but for him, every sighting remains just as special. “I’ve seen generations of tigers in this forest. But even now, every time I see a tiger, I feel lucky,” he says. “In 2005, when I was out on a safari, I saw a leopard in the distance chasing a spotted deer. The deer was running towards a group of four young tigers, who were the cubs of “badi mata” (the mother of the Collarwali Tigress). The tigers began running after the leopard, who climbed up a tree to save its life. In the end, the tigers had surrounded the tree and it was almost like they were challenging the leopard to come down and face them.” Of course, there are scarier sightings too. “Less than a month ago, I was out on a safari early in the morning with guests. We were the only jeep in the area and we heard some langur calls. The next moment, there was a tiger charging towards our vehicle. She came very close to our jeep and then just turned away and went back. The guests were shivering and they didn’t want to see any more wildlife after that,” says Patil. He highlights the need to stay calm in moments like these. This is the tigress’ way of asking you to keep away, he says, and it’s important to respect that.

Beyond the big cats, Pench is great for spotting wild dogs, the Indian gaur, leopards, cheetal, sambar, nilgai, jackals, bison, jungle cats, leopards, palm civets, black bears and more. The park is also home to a variety of birds, including peacocks, crow pheasant, peafowl, pintail, lesser whistling teal, Indian roller, wagtail, munia, waterfowl, blue kingfisher, crimson-breasted barbet and red-vented bulbul. “Even if you don’t see a lot of animals when you visit, you will always see birds at Pench,” says Patil.

For Patil, guiding a safari isn’t just about spotting a tiger. “Most people take the jeep out and drive everywhere looking for tigers. But I’m not a tiger spotter. I want to spot the diverse wildlife and flora of the forest, even smaller things like flowers, birds, spider webs. That’s my way of showing people how to see the forest,” he says. “I am usually the slowest driver in the forest and I stop the vehicle often. You have to listen to what the jungle is telling you. There might be an alarm call by a sambar deer, a spotted deer or a monkey. Peacocks sometimes give an alarm call, which means a predator bird or carnivorous animal may be around. I also listen for jungle babblers—I call them the police of the forest . They are always able to spot something fishy—an owl, snake or a jungle cat.”

What’s the best time to visit Pench National Park?

Winter, which lasts from November to February , is a great time to visit Pench. The weather at this time remains pleasant for wildlife sightings and nature walks. However, according to Patil, the best time to visit is between February and March. This is when winter is just starting to fade away and the scorching summer hasn’t quite set in. “At this time of year, the peacocks begin to spread their wings to attract the peahens—it’s breeding season for them—and the birds begin to chirp just a little bit louder. It feels like animals are in a good mood during this time,” says Patil. During summer, temperatures touch 40°C and the harsh weather makes sightseeing difficult for tourists. However, this is a great time for tiger sightings since dry weather brings thirsty tigers to water bodies more frequently.

How many safaris should you do during a three-night stay?

Increasing the frequency of safaris increases the likelihood of sighting tigers and other wildlife. Patil recommends at least two-three safaris—two in the morning and one in the afternoon, ideally—along with other local experiences. He also encourages guests to explore the Maharashtra side of Pench (at gates like Sillari and Khursapar), which offers distinct landscapes, flora and fauna as compared to the part of Pench that lies in Madhya Pradesh.

What are the safari slots?

Morning and afternoon safaris offer the same wildlife viewing opportunities, but chances of spotting animals may differ. “The morning safari is the preferred option as it lasts up to five hours—as compared to the three-and-a-half-hour afternoon safari—making it an ideal choice for wildlife enthusiasts,” says Patil. Morning light also provides favourable conditions for photography.

How to book a safari permit at Pench and how much does it cost?

You will need to book a safari from the  government website to enter the park. Patil recommends booking a permit well in advance, especially if you plan on visiting the Turia gate, which is known for tiger sightings. Permits for Indians cost Rs2,450* for weekdays and Rs3,050* for weekends. The cost is usually double for foreign nationals. It’s best to plan your trip on weekdays, when the rush of tourists is significantly lesser. But do note that the Turia gate remains shut on Wednesdays. It’s best to book safari permits well in advance—45-60 days—to gain entry into preferred zones.

How to book a jeep and guide

If you have a valid safari permit, a jeep and guide will be assigned to you at the gate by the forest department. You can also pick a guide of your choice at an extra cost. Having a knowledgeable naturalist on your safaris can make all the difference. Look for someone with extensive knowledge of the forest and its wildlife and pay attention to their advice and directions.

A forest department jeep typically costs Rs3,000*, while a guide usually charges Rs600* per safari. If you are staying at a jungle lodge or wildlife resort, you can request them to arrange a guide and safari for you at an extra charge.

Which zones are the best?

Pench is a smaller park as compared to Kanha or Bandhavgarh , and does not have a zone system. The park has three entry gates: Turia, Karmajhari and Jamtara. Turia Gate is considered to be the best for tiger spotting and is also the most popular among tourists. But there’s a lot more to explore at Pench beyond Turia. “It’s important to talk about different parts of the forest—the national park, the sanctuary, the buffer area—which spans 2000 sq ft—and the water bodies in between,” says Patil. “No one takes tourists to those areas because everyone only wants to spot the tiger.” Beyond the Turia gate, Patil also recommends exploring the Khawasa buffer area, the Khursapar gate, the Rukkhad gate or the Sillari gate in Maharashtra. Patil’s favourite area in the forest is Sitaghat. “It’s a really nice, secluded area where you won’t find a lot of jeeps. The landscape there is beautiful and great for birdwatching.”

Besides jeep safaris, what else can you do at Pench?

In the core forest area at Turia gate, jeep safaris are the only option. If you want to get off the vehicle and explore the forest on foot or on cycles, visit the buffer areas. If you’re interested, you can even opt for a night safari—check with your guide or hotel about timings and bookings—where you can spot tigers, bears and other nocturnal creatures. Beyond safaris, you can explore the local villages, cycle around the area or enjoy a sundowner picnic at Kohka lake—a picturesque reservoir great for birdwatching. There are also camps that offer curated activities around the lake.

Turia Gate is the main and most popular area in Pench. “Expect the unexpected” , this phrase made absolute sense when I experienced game drives in the forests of Madhya Pradesh with Taj Safaris . I spotted tigers thrice on my safaris in two of the most noted national parks (Bandhavgarh & Kanha National Park) in central India recently. Following the alert calls in the jungle, watching the footprints on the muddy road, chasing tigers, hearing the roaring sound, and getting to see those intimidating eyes up close from a few inches away, was undoubtedly the highlight of my game drive in Kanha National Park on a rainy day.

It was not only a fascinating experience to take back home, but it was quite unique for me as I caught sight of tigers for the very first time in my life, after having visited more than five national parks across India. Being a nature admirer, I was never a wildlife enthusiast, who visits the forest in search of wild creatures. I generally soak in the alluring beauty of Indian forests, enjoying the rustling of the dry leaves, the enchanting chorus of birds, lush thick green forest, and the winding roads. But something changed drastically after I experienced wilderness with Taj Safaris. The exceptionally knowledgeable naturalists of Taj Safaris made me fall in love with the wildlife like never before. It suddenly instilled the urge to know more about the territory and the life of wild animals in the forest.Other than this, there are bundle of reasons that make Taj Safaris as India’s most desired option when it comes to experiencing wildlife.

Experienced and Exceptional Naturalists

The very first reason which makes any safaris fascinating enough is the naturalists. They are the first ones, who take you deep into the forest to introduce you to the wilderness up close. One of the best parts about Taj Safaris is that the naturalists give a brief presentation about the park, its territories, and the wildlife before your first safari so that you are aware of the forest you are entering. A big shout out to Karun from the Mahua Kothi Lodge in Bandhavgarh and Vipul, Parth, Yazu, and Nara from Banjaar Tola in Kanha for giving me one unforgettable wildlife experience.

Luxurious Stay in the Jungle

When it comes to luxury, The Taj Safaris can spoil you forever. Whether it is the mud houses in Bandhavgarh or Eco tents of Banjaar Tola in Kanha , the unbeatable luxury, world-class hospitality, modern amenities, and uncompromising services make them the best in the business. I loved the rustic feel of the mud cottages in Bandhavgarh.

Whether it was the courtyard of the cottage with comfortable shaded seating arrangement, the Tulsi plant in the middle, giving it a traditional home look, the mouth-watering food that was served during my stay or the warmth in the behavior of the staff, I enjoyed everything there.

The location of Banjaar Tola Tents is simply breathtaking. Located on the bank of the Banjaar River, just across the river is the core zone of the Kanha National Park, giving a sense of belongingness to the wildness straight from your super luxurious tents.The most aesthetically designed, contemporary styled and modern tents are luxurious beyond imagination.

The large glass door, opening to the floating veranda overlooking the river was my favorite corner of the property.The look and feel of the property are inspired by the lodges and tents in South Africa. Even the decors of the property flaunt the same.

Eco-Friendly Lodges & Tents

One of the commendable features about Taj Safaris lodges and tents is that they are eco-friendly. Being close to the national parks, Taj Safaris believe in maintaining the ecosystem by reducing the carbon footprints in their surroundings. If I talk about the Mahua Kothi in Bandhavgarh, it felt good to see how they have constructed mud cottages amidst the forest, encouraging guests to switch off the lights when they are out, keeping the environment eco-friendly in the best possible way.

Banjaar Tola is also another excellent example of Eco tents where they have minimalistic use of concrete, open verandahs are set on raised structures, allowing natural growth under the buildings, reducing electricity usage by the energy saving lights, gas-based water heating, solar-heated swimming pool, and solar-powered outdoor lights. There are many such initiatives taken by Taj Safaris to make the environment Eco-friendly around the lodges and cottages.

Taj Hospitality

The standard of Taj Hospitality is sky high. The warm greetings at the arrival, customized meals, welcome notes, surprise gifts and providing a unique safari experience, every little effort is exceptional and incredible at the same time. I loved the way they make your stay comfortable and memorable in their properties. The friendly and efficient staff also contributes immensely to maintain their high scaled hospitality. I can’t forget the dinner under the stars by the pool side at Mahua Kothi.

Likewise, the breakfast arrangements in the middle of the forest or the surprise evening tea arrangement on a hillock, not only make you want to come back again but also make your experience an unforgettable one.

Being a city dweller, I hardly get time to get close to the tribal community in my daily life. Taj Safaris also arrange lunch in the village to get you accustomed to the daily life of those villagers. There are many such initiatives taken by them to give you a better perspective about the rural life in India.

Taj Safaris has been contributing immensely to promote responsible tourism in the surrounding villages of their lodges and tents. There are many initiatives taken by them to improve the lifestyle of economically underprivileged villages. Their engagement in creating awareness in its neighboring community is commendable. Providing income opportunities to employ locals in their lodges or tents, giving them training and leveling up to the Taj hospitality standard, making them aware of the wildlife by showing them documentaries, distributing vegetable seeds to the villagers and even teaching them farming techniques are some of the great initiatives undertaken by them.

Training is another aspect of their responsible tourism program where the executive chefs of the lodges in central India give training to the local women to develop skills in kitchen gardening and also teach hygienic cooking which helps them to enhance their culinary skills.The lodges are also involved in development programs for the villagers, by not just providing them with sewing machines and computers, but also imparting training to make them self-sustainable and develop a sense of confidence to uplift their lifestyle. I was delighted to know that the Barjaar Tola lodge in Kanha take underprivileged kids and differently abled people to the park each season to give them the wildlife experience. The best part here is the development of eco-friendly accommodations. Many other parts of the country have gone wrong here but especially the tiger zones in the heart of India are still a delight. No one should also miss the opportunity to interact with the locals and visit their villages as you have rightly pointed out.

I so agree with this. We had a fantastic experience like the one you described at Baghvan, their property in pench. We hadn’t chosen kanha or bandhavgarh because my daughter was less than 2 then. The stay at the stone cottages, the food, the hospitality, the safari experience with their naturalist, the dinner they organised one evening in a bullock cart, all of it memorable.

Baghvan a Taj Safari Lodge

Bagh Van means 'Tiger Forest' in Hindi, which is fitting as this lodge is hidden amongst the trees of a seasonal stream just five minutes from the Pench Tiger Reserve entrance. During the dry season the river bed is used as a pathway for the animals living in the fringes of the national park.

Private machans (jungle platforms) overlook the shady nullah (valley), providing thrilling game viewing, and allow guests to be fully immersed in the sights and sounds of the Indian jungle. As one of the Taj properties, this is one of the most luxurious lodges in Pench National Park.

Lodge Details

Set beside a pretty stream on the edge of Pench National Park in Madhya Pradesh, Baghvan is just five minutes from the hills, forests and valleys of Pench. During the dry season the river bed is used as a pathway for the animals living in the fringes of the park and guests shouldn’t be surprised to find sambar deer on the doorstep in the morning.

Accommodation & Facilities

Shaded by huge teak and banyan trees, the 12 sumptuous cottages are housed in two buildings, interconnected by a private courtyard, and blend seamlessly with their environment. All suites have generous en-suite bathrooms with both in and outdoor showers. Above the bathroom is an open air machan (jungle platform), complete with mosquito nets and hookah pipes - ideal for game viewing by day and a romantic sleep-out by night.

The main bungalow at Baghvan has a quirky 1950’s feel and has a communal lounge area which is the perfect place to relax after a game drive and share experiences with fellow guests, whilst being served high tea or sundowners.

Cooking at Baghvan is done in an open kitchen. Guests can watch as the chefs prepare a wide range of meals, including traditional Indian dishes, or even try their hand at blending the perfect curry or producing golden paranthas. Where possible food is locally sourced.

Game drives operate with expert guides in six-seater 4x4 vehicles. Cultural walks and village visits are also on offer, as is birdwatching from the pool deck.
