Tokyo Bike Tour Reviews

1.  small-group tokyo biking tour.

  • Duration: 6.5 hours
  • Departure: 3-chōme-20-2 Nishishinjuku, Shinjuku City, Tokyo
  • Departure Time: 8:50 AM
  • Includes:  Professional guide, bike and helmet rental

Starting things off on the right foot is the longest, most comprehensive tour of its type in Tokyo. The Small-Group Tokyo Biking Tour  kicks things off in the morning, so you have all day to weave in and out of the top highlights of Tokyo’s scenery – from skyscrapers to pristine gardens.

If this is your first time in this amazing city, I can’t recommend this stunning, knowledge-filled tour enough! We met up with our guide early in the morning at the Tokyo Opera City Sankun Garden, which is easy to access through the public transportation systems.

Our guide then provided us with our rental bikes and rental helmets which I felt all looked very well-maintained and clean. 6.5 hours on a bike doesn’t sound easy, but the way our guide planned and timed our itinerary made everything smooth and streamlined.

We started out amongst the skyscrapers of Shinjuku, which I’ll admit was a bit challenging as I kept wanting to look up and gawk at their grandeur!

We then cruised along some backstreets to view a shrine located in a residential neighborhood, which perfectly exhibited the contrast between modern and older structures.

Expand To See More See Less

I loved the way that our schedule took us from bustling areas to serene, quiet ones, to keep us guessing. We had a delicious bento box lunch on the waterfront next to the iconic Rainbow Bridge, which offered some of the most stunning views of the city skyline I’d ever seen.

After that, we explored more of Ginza than I’d ever seen, from the top tourist spots to hidden gems.

Throughout our tour, our guide told us fascinating historical accounts and anecdotes to further enrich the experience, offering constant entertainment and learning opportunities!

  • Duration:  6 hours
  • Departure: 1-chōme-3-2 Shinkawa, Chuo City, Tokyo 104-0033
  • Departure Time: 9:00 AM
  • Includes:  Use of bicycle, lunch, bottled water

This next tour comes in close to the previous one in terms of length and comprehensiveness. The Tokyo Great Cycling Tour  clocks in at around 6 hours, where you’ll get to explore parts of this magical city that isn’t as easy on foot or in a motor vehicle.

Combine that with the small group setting of no more than 12 participants, and this intimate experience will offer real insight into the history and local culture.

Our tour started by meeting up with our guide in the center of Tokyo, who gave us a briefing of what to expect for the day and answered any questions we had. I appreciated that the tour started at 9:00 am, so I didn’t have to wake up early and the tour ended well before dinnertime.

Depending on the size of the tour, you’ll either have one, two, or even three guides, but all of them are locals and know the city very well.

I have to say that this tour offered the most interesting route of any Tokyo bike tour I’d taken, guiding us through quiet streets while sharing interesting information about the sites as we pass by.

I can truly say that I wouldn’t have discovered at least half of the spots we visited on my own, which alone made this tour worth it!

We crossed over backstreets, bridges, dedicated bike paths, as well as busy streets to see some of the most incredible spots.

The Tsukiji Jogai market was very impressive, and I made a mental note to stop by here later to pick up some fresh produce and unique mementos later on. Seeing the Zojo-ji Buddhism Temple was also amazing – especially seeing it with the contrast of the Tokyo Tower behind it!

Oh, and if you’re a foodie but don’t want to go on just a dedicated food tour, this one perfectly balances out the two!

3. Enjoy Local Tokyo E-assist Bicycle Tour, 3hrs tour with up to Six

  • Duration:  3 hours
  • Departure: 3-chōme-8-6 Uchikanda, Chiyoda City, Tokyo
  • Departure Time: 9:00 AM & 1:30 PM
  • Includes:  Rental E-assist bike, Rental Helmet, Guide, Insurance

The first time I ever stepped foot in Tokyo, I was immediately taken aback by just how many “contrasts” there are within it. Ancient traditions seamlessly blend with modern innovation, and that’s exemplified in its architecture throughout.

The Enjoy Local Tokyo E-Assist Bicycle Tour  led me through tons of hidden gems and bustling neighborhoods by guides who are clearly very passionate about their city!

This was the first time I’d ridden an e-bike, and let me tell you, I wish I had one at home! While regular bikes do a fine enough job, their electric counterparts work perfectly for a tour of this kind as you don’t have to work as hard pedaling to get everywhere.

We were able to cover much more ground and delve deeper into the sights and sounds than we would have been able to in a bus, car, or even by foot.

I knew that I wanted to explore the Tokyo that goes beyond the tourist hotspots, covering the lesser-known neighborhoods and landmarks like the Kiyosumi Garden canals or backstreets of Yanaka.

Along the way, we were able to soak in the sights of historic temples, vibrant markets, quaint cafes, and everything in between to gain insight into the daily life of Tokyoites.

The stops were well-curated, stopping at famous landmarks and off-the-beaten-path attractions that showcased Tokyo’s eclectic character, with our guide telling us facts and stories about the city’s past and present.

It’s no secret that Tokyo can be overwhelming if it’s your first time there, with its crowded streets and fast-paced lifestyle, but this made it so much easier.

I should also mention that there are both morning and afternoon tour start times available, and the itinerary does vary a little bit depending on whichever one you select. I had so much fun sightseeing and learning about Tokyo while zooming around, that I’d recommend it to anyone!

4. 5-Hour Tokyo & Edo Hidden Gem Bike Tour with Lunch

  • Duration: 4.5 hours to 5 hours
  • Departure: 1 Chome-18 Asakusabashi, Taito City, Tokyo
  • Departure Time: 10:00 AM
  • Includes:  Rental bike, Bottled water, Lunch, 5 hours with Local guide, Use of bicycle, Entrance fee of Museum

I know that the neon lights and towering skyscrapers are enticing to look at, but just beyond them lies ancient temples and serene gardens just waiting to be explored!

The 5-Hour Tokyo & Edo Hidden Gem Bike Tour with Lunch experience will take you beyond the obvious, to places that make it feel like you’re in some sort of dream! This tour is just a bit shorter than the others, but still covers a ton of great attractions with a delicious lunch included!

Something that I really appreciate about these tours is that you get to enjoy the atmosphere through the backstreets that bus tours just simply can’t achieve. The rental bikes are included, and we all pedaled at a comfortable pace to make it ideal for just about any experience level.

Our tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable, and was even willing to modify our food stops a bit to accommodate vegan participants in our group! This tour made me realize just how well-organized and clean Tokyo is, leading us through the streets in a way that wasn’t stressful or worrisome at all!

For this reason, among others, I would recommend this tour to people of any age, families with children, etcetera. Thanks to the small group setting, our guide asked for our feedback of what each of us would like to see (and rather avoid) and tailored the ride around our preferences.

We saw so many unique sites that I can’t possibly list them all, and I appreciated that our guide made so many regular photo stops so we got some great souvenirs to take home with us.

After an hour or so, we took a break to have a mouthwatering, traditional Japanese lunch before we continued on our exploration. With the places we visited and the information our guide regaled to us, I truly feel I have a much better understanding of Japanese customs and way of life.

5. Tokyo Downtown Bicycle Tour Tokyo Backstreets Bike Tour

  • Duration:  4 hours
  • Departure: Japan, 131-0032 Tokyo, Sumida City, Higashimukōjima
  • Departure Time: 1:30 PM
  • Includes:  Use of bicycle, Bottled water, Snacks, Helmets, 1 tandem bike is available by prior request.

Last but certainly not least, is the Tokyo Downtown Bicycle Tour Tokyo Backstreets Bike Tou r! This 4-hour excursion is a fantastic alternative to working out in the hotel gym, allowing for plenty of fresh air, and incomparable sights and sounds.

There’s absolutely no way I would’ve explored some of the areas we covered without risk of getting lost, but our guide kept us feeling safe and entertained throughout the entire time!

We ended up meeting our guide in central Tokyo, where they let us borrow the well-maintained bikes and optional helmets for protection (though not required by law).

The stop was easy to access from the Keisei Hikifune railway station on Keisei line, so you don’t have to worry about booking transportation. The e-bikes are also very easy to use, and require less effort to get around, so if you’re not in shape, there’s no need to worry.

This was one of the more intimate Tokyo tours we tried, as it was literally just us and our friendly local guide who was happy to customize the tour around our interests.

Oh, and if you’re a foodie and would like a little intro to some interesting local snacks, this tour is perfect for you! One of our first stops had us trying a traditional cherry cake called “Sakuramochi”, which is wrapped in a salt-pickled cherry leaf and filled with red bean paste!

I learned quickly that in Tokyo, it seems like just about every snack or dish has some interesting story behind it, which was also cool to learn about.

We saw plenty of temples that dated back to the 500s (!!), along with beautiful gardens, museums, shrines, and so much more. Overall, I think this tour will give anyone a newfound appreciation about Tokyo and Japanese culture outside the more bustling “city center” area.

NEIGHBOURHOODS

Cycling on mamachari bikes past BnA commissioned street art in Koenji, Tokyo

Cycle the sprawling 'shotengai' and back streets of Koenji. An infectious melting pot of subcultures, alternative music, vintage clothing stores and a thriving independent bar scene. Branded as the ‘birthplace of Japanese punk music’ and referenced in author Haruki Murakami’s 1Q84, a stroll through the character filled streets of Koenji should be high on the list of any discerning traveller .

Local tip: Say hello to Miho and the gang at Kosugi-yu, Koenji’s flourishing local bathhouse. There’s no better way to immerse yourself in suburban Tokyo life than getting your gear off with a bunch of local personalities and melting away into the soothing waters.

Cherry blossoms along the Zenpukuji River in spring

ZENPUKUJI RIVER

Shift down a gear or two and ride the meandering bike trails of the Zenpukiji River. Cycle past children at play in the lush parklands, photographers snapping away at local birdlife and musicians strumming their guitars on tree stumps, left as a reminder of the last typhoon. It’s easy to forget that you’re a brisk 20 minute ride from the busiest train station on the planet.

Local tip: Pull up a milkcrate  and drop a lure at Musashino Gardens Fishing Pond. Often the backdrop for the odd television drama, this ‘tsuriba’ is a real blast from the past. Grab a bite to eat from the innards of a ‘popcorn dispensing ninja’ and celebrate with a ‘Hoppy’ or two after a successful catch.

Security guard standing firm at the Takashi Murakami store in Nakano Broadway

Park your bike and venture into the bustling alleyways of Nakano, one of Tokyo’s ‘most underrated neighbourhoods’. Nakano Broadway with its jumble of ‘otaku’ centric retailers is the primary drawcard for many but the real heart of Nakano lies in its cozy backstreets teeming with boisterous ‘izakaya’ and pocket-sized bars. Come nightfall, the ornate street-lamps and storefront lanterns transform Nakano’s paved alleys into a stunning adult playland.

Local Tip: If you’re looking to compliment your already impressive vinyl collection, don’t pass up the opportunity to drop by Flower Record Nakano. I’ll let you make the call if the owner’s an eccentric genius gifted with a ‘photographic memory’ or just a run-of-the-mill hoarder.

RONE street art in the backstreets of Asagaya, Tokyo

Get a whiff of nostalgia as we pedal Asagaya's quaint streets lined with live music bars, retro coffee shops and mom-and-pop ‘izakayas’. Celebrated as an artistic enclave for literature, jazz music and independent cinema, there’s no shortage of neighbourhood treasures to keep you enthralled.

Local tip: Kick-off an evening down Star Road, a former open air black market that’s now home to a lively eating and drinking scene. There aren’t too many ‘yokocho’ in Tokyo that can go head-to-head with Asagaya’s Star Road, if you're chasing that 'real' local night out on the town.

"Stop your Airbnb experience searching RIGHT NOW! Andy’s bike tour was one of the best parts of our short trip to Tokyo. Even though we had had a few smaller neighborhood excursions on our time, it didn’t compare to the knowledge and unique places Andy showed us. Not to mention he’s an amazing guy with a wonderfully outgoing personality. Be prepared for out of the way sights, eats and a bit of a thrill zooming around on narrow streets and back alleys. We even went back to some of the areas Andy showed us to dig in a bit deeper. We are so glad we took this trip!!!"

"Spending my last full day in Tokyo biking around Nakano / Koenji / Asagaya was an excellent decision. Andy has a bright and fun energy and was a thoughtful guide as he showed us his neighborhood. We ate some some of the best noodles and snacks that I had during my trip! This is great way to get out of the bustle of Shinjuku or Shibuya and see the way people simply live in Tokyo. Andy made sure to check in with our group to see how we were handling the bike ride, provided ample stops for pictures and enjoying the scenery--and did I mention the delicious food? Definitely a unique experience that I would repeat in a second."

This was a really fantastic Tokyo experience! Myself, my wife and our three boys (13, 12 & 11) had a great day with Andy, cycling around the west side of Tokyo. Andy was very knowledgeable, helpful, safety conscious (great when you have kids) and very engaging. He lead us on an exciting bike ride through the back streets of Tokyo and we feasted on some delicious, local Japanese snacks and lunch on route. Our whole family couldn’t wipe the smiles off our faces at the end! Thanks Andy for a very memorable day!

WORTH A MENTION

This is a ‘no-fuss’ biking, walking and food experience with an emphasis on socialising, exploration and local discovery. There won’t be any ‘major sightseeing’ or ‘fine dining’ stops along our cycling route for the day.

For the enjoyment of all guests attending and for your personal safety, it’s recommended that you’re competent riding a bike through narrow and potentially crowded streets and on uneven surfaces for a distance of roughly 12 - 15 km (7.5 - 9.5 mi).

For the small group rides, guests should be over 10 years of age and 140 cm in height (4'7) to comfortably ride the mamachari bikes. For families with younger children, please contact me directly and I’m always happy to curate a family friendly cycling adventure.

All salvaged ‘mamachari’ bicycles come equipped with front baskets that have the capacity to hold a standard sized backpack.

Bike helmets are optional for cyclists over the age of 12 in Tokyo but can be provided for all participants on request.

Japanese cuisine often contains meat and seafood elements, with ‘dashi’ being a common base ingredient. Please understand that we will be visiting typical neighbourhood eateries and that it can be difficult to cater to personal tastes, dietary requirements and food allergies. Feel free to tuck into as much or as little of the food as you wish. If the selection of eats on the day doesn’t quite satisfy your dietary requirements, just give the word and I’m more than happy to discount the food element on any cycling tour.

Group size, environmental factors and the speed in which the group eats and cycles will all impact on our finishing time. As a rough guide, it’s a 3.5 to 4 hour outing.

Please appreciate that cycling is an outdoor activity that may be impacted by the weather. If we encounter a rainy day, basic ponchos will be provided and our ride generally proceeds as planned.

By attending the Tokyo West-Side Cycling & Food Tour you acknowledge the adventurous nature of the ride and that participation can involve a degree of personal risk. Cycling liability insurance is included for the cycling portion of our experience together but you are expected to possess comprehensive travel insurance to protect yourself from any unforeseen incidents.

If you are a ramen lover, joining a guided tour might be a good option. Brian, an American guy living in Tokyo, has organized ramen tours for a long time and has a good reputation. After I met him in Shinjuku, I visited a ramen restaurant which he recommended. “ Nagi ” serves fine ramen with niboshi, a kind of dried sardine. It was fantastic!
