Horseback riding in the rainforest

Our guides were great! Jose and I chatted a lot (very personable and knows a lot about the ride) and my mom learned a lot from Fernando. The horses had a mind of their own but we had a great ride, very relaxing. Wear pants! And sunscreen!

Our two guides Jonathan and Kevin we're outstanding. Our kids 3/6 got to ride on their own horses by themselves which they loved. It is a full hour ride in the Forrest so make sure your kids are able to do the whole trip. My youngest was getting tired at the end.

Fun for the whole family

As a family of five, it was refreshing to find a fun experience for a reasonable price! Our family has never rode a horse, let alone in a rainforest in Puerto Rico! Angel and Jose were great tour guides and took great pictures of our family. Overall, we could not have asked for a better experience.

Horseback tour

One of the highlights of our recent trip to Puerto Rico! Healthy, well trained horses led by guides, Fernando and Juan. These men made the adventure interesting with their knowledge and kept the entire trip fun filled. Lunch at Kiosk 60 was a wonderful side adventure into local cuisine - not to be missed!

Tour the Foothills of El Yunque on an ATV at Carabali

If you like a little excitement while on your vacation, you can take a trip to Carabali Rainforest Park (formerly Hacienda Carabali ). This 600 acre facility, located in the foothills of the El Yunque National Forest, offers a wide range of activities. They have horseback riding , ATV, mountain bikes and go carts to get your heart pumping.

On this visit, we decided to go on a 2 hour ATV adventure. We have been ATV-ing before on a few other islands and really enjoyed it. We called a day ahead of time and reserved a 2-hour tour for 9:30am. When you check in, of course you have to sign the usual insurance waiver. We were greeted by our bi-lingual guide, Francisco. It turns out he lived in NJ and PA, pretty close to where we used to live, and he recently moved back to PR, so we had lots to talk about! He gave us our required helmets and a brief lesson on the operation of the ATVs. These are large vehicles (larger than any we had driven before). But they were easy to drive – as long as you have a strong right thumb! Really, to make it go, you press a lever with your right thumb and to brake, there was a lever on the left hand handle bar (like a bicycle brake). Now you are ready to go!

As it turned out, we were the only ones on this tour, so we had the road all to ourselves. Here is an overview of our trip: You start off on the mostly flat lower area, where they also ride the horses. Here, you can get used to the throttle button and work out your driving skills. They tell you that you are always responsible to be in control. Throughout the tour, we got to go pretty fast on occasion, going up and down hills, through puddles and across fields. Our guide was always in the lead, but he drove almost standing up, constantly watching to make sure we were OK. We then left the low area and started uphill. We stopped a few times at scenic spots for pictures and some discussion about the land, the park, plant life in the area, etc.

Depending on when the last rains were, there will probably be some puddles. It had rained the day before, so we had lots of muddy puddles to splash through! I always tried to kick up as much mud as I could, to try to get Ray (who was behind me) dirty, but he caught on pretty early and left a lot of space between us! We went through a few water areas that were deeper than the foot rests on the ATV. That is were you get the dirtiest – as the water splashes up and around the wheel wells.

In the hills, we passed a number of old structures that look like old “Jibaro” (which, loosely translated, means “hillbilly”) houses. As it turns out, they are going to be filming a movie on the property. So the movie company is making all sorts of movie sets, but these looked very old and authentic. I hope they leave them up after the movie – it was kind-of cool to see (a little PR history – even if it is fake!).

Half way through the trip, you get to a nice section of the Mameyes river. They stop here for about 15 minutes to swim if you wanted (it is about 6 feet deep) or just play and explore in the river. There are fish and shrimp in this cool, clear water. Very refreshing!

Then you start to head back. On the way back, we saw the halfway rest point for the 1 hour ATV and the horseback riding trips. This point had bathrooms, and another spot on the river that was only a few feet deep – just enough to splash around in. We saw the Coco Rio (the nice pool and building they have available for weddings or events). We also passed a few horseback riders on the trails. Everyone looked like they were having fun!

We really enjoyed our trip. It was a lot of fun. We will be back – my niece and nephews would love it (and the go-carts and the horses, too!).

If you are going to do this, I would wear something you don’t mind getting dirty and/or wet. Long pants would be best since the engine compartment gets kind of hot and your left leg touches close to it. Wear closed-toe shoes that you don’t mind getting wet or dirty. I find Crocs or sneakers will do. Wear a bathing suit under your clothes so if you want to go in the water. Bring a towel to dry off and a bottle of water for the trip. I found you need to wear glasses – sun glasses and if you have one, maybe a bandana on your face – you will have mud, dirt and bugs flying into your face during the trip!

There are bathrooms at the check-in office. There are also men’s and women’s shower/changing rooms available in each of the respective bathrooms so you can clean up after your trip. There is also a snack bar.

They have 22 ATVs, so that is the maximum number of people that would be out on any tour. Francisco said that they have a number of tour guides, and they try to limit each group to 5 or so ATVs.

If you're happy, let them know it — Don't forget to tip your your bartender, tour guide or trip operator if you enjoyed yourself. Gratuities are appreciated and typically aren't included in the price they charge you.

2Hr ATV tours are at 9:30am, 12:30pm and 2:30pm. 1 Hr trips are more often throughout day. But if you have another time in mind, call and ask if they can set you up with a tour.

The ATV’s are 2-seaters. You must be at least 16 years old to drive(with drivers license), but passengers 12 years old and up. Bring drivers license (with photo ID) and credit card.

This ATV adventure combined with mountains, river and beach offers a little bit of everything, guaranteeing to make your day a fun one. Experience an exciting one-hour ATV ride on a 600-acre ranch located at the foothills of el Yunque National Rainforest with amazing scenic mountain views. Then head to a second stop, located also on the outskirts of the rainforest, to enjoy a guided short hike on a nature trail and cool off swimming on a secluded natural freshwater pool with a rope swing. End your day relaxing at the warm, calm and beautiful popular Luquillo beach.

1 hour Price is *$135 for ATV passenger and **$160 per ATV driver.

There is also a two-hour ride ATV tour option. The extra hour includes 15 minutes of additional ATV driving, a 30-minute stop on a river bank and a 15-minute stop in a food stand. If you are still interested in the two-hour ATV adventure, there is an extra cost per person for a total price of $210 per driver and $160 per passenger.

What to Expect/Itinerary

Will start with a one-hour morning drive heading to the Northeast coast of PR.

1 Arrive to a 600-acre ranch located at the foothills of el Yunque National Rainforest to embark on your one-hour ATV adventure. Upon arrival, you will be provided with helmets and assigned to a professional and friendly guide for a safety briefing on how to operate the vehicle. You can choose to be a solo driver or ride as a passenger with a member from your group on the ATV’s. You will have a great time in this exhilarating ride through the spectacular scenery of Puerto Rico’s east coast, whether you are an experienced rider or a first timer. Please keep in mind that safety is first, so every participant will ride together with the group at reasonable speed. The idea is to have fun, while feeling safe and secure.

* Two-hour ride ATV option - Even though most Rainforest ATV tours offer a two-hour ride in the same ranch, that extra hour includes a 30-minute stop in a river bank and another 15-minute stop in a food stand in case you want to purchase a quick snack. Those tours only offers transportation to and from the ranch. Our tour rather spends that extra hour in a different and more adventurous swimming area, and provides for a more exciting day with lunch at an authentic restaurant and an additional beach stop. If you are still interested in the two-hour ATV adventure, there is an extra cost per person for a total price of $180 per driver and $130 per passenger.

2 After completing your exciting ATV part of the trip, will head to a second stop to cool down on a beautiful freshwater natural pool, also located on the outskirts of the Rainforest. Here, the more adventurous will be able to jump from a rope swing and others will just sit and enjoy the peaceful and shallow areas of the river. All this surrounded by green lush areas and after first doing a guided short hike on a nature trail to admire the local plants and trees.

3 Once you enjoyed your swimming time on the rainforest river, will head for a lunch break at an authentic nearby restaurant.

4 Don’t worry about falling into a food coma with an authentic meal…you will have the chance to relax later for around one hour at the beautiful popular Luquillo beach with few waves and calm waters before heading back to your hotel.

• No prior experience needed to ride the ATV.
• Participants should have a moderate physical fitness level, must be capable of walking uneven surfaces and hop into the ATV without assistance.
• Drivers must be at least 16 years old and must bring a physical valid driver’s license.
• Driver must be a minimum height of 60 inches tall.
• Passenger must be a minimum height of 54 inches tall.
• Guests under 18 must be accompanied by someone 18 or older.
• 485 pounds combined weight limit for each ATV.
• Please bring a VISA or MasterCard to hold a damage deposit.
• Will be operated by a multi-lingual guide (Spanish and English). Tour might be offered bilingual in case needed.
• Additional transfer fee from towns outside of San Juan/Metro area will apply (each way)
• We strongly recommend having good breakfast before pick-up at hotel and bring snacks. We will have lunch around four to five hours after pick-up. If you have any special dietary restriction, please notify at time of booking and bring your snacks.
• Not recommended for participants with heart complaints, back problems, recent injuries or other serious medical conditions.
• Not recommended for woman past their first trimester or persons with mobility limitations.
• If you have a service animal you have to notify it prior to booking the experience, since other participants in the tour might have asthma or allergies to pets danders.
• This experience requires good weather. If it’s canceled due to poor weather, you’ll be offered a different date or a full refund.
• This experience requires a minimum number of travelers. If it’s canceled because the minimum isn’t met, you’ll be offered a different date/experience or a full refund.
• This tour/activity will have a maximum of 13 travelers.

The max speed you’ll get up to is 15mph. The tour guide literally had us stop 5 times burning up our hour ride wasting time. You’ll also stop 3mins from the the main entrance at a creek with a bar so you can spend more money! They have empanadas and frozen drinks inside of coconuts. I get it everything is a hustle. You’ll be on a 2016 can-am that’s seen better days. For $125 a person they could have newer equipment. And actually take you on a real hour tour as it’s advertised. When you arrive, we'll give you a quick 10-minute tutorial on how to operate the four-track and go over some important safety instructions. Then, you're off to the races! You'll ride through the rainforest, splash through rivers, and more. Whether you're an experienced rider or a first-timer, this adventure will be thrilling.

But that's not all! You'll have the chance to view the crystal-clear waters of the Mameyes River. It's an unforgettable experience you'll be discussing for years to come.

Before booking, there are a few important things you need to know.

All drivers must present a valid driver's license, and closed-toe shoes are required. We also require a credit card to reserve your spot.

Here are some other important details:

MUST READ BEFORE RESERVING

• The park is located 40 minutes away from San Juan.
• Check-in is required one hour before your scheduled tour time.
• Morning time: We will schedule your tour between 8:30 am to 11:30 am.
• Afternoon time: We will schedule your tour between 12:00 pm to 5 pm.
• Single occupancy means only one person on the ATV is allowed.
• Double occupancy means two people on the ATV per vehicle, with one driver and one passenger.
• Please note that we do not provide transportation.
• The address will be provided in your confirmation email after you have made a reservation and completed the online waiver form.
• All required documents must be presented during check-in
• Failure to provide all necessary requirements will result in no refund or rescheduling options
• This policy is strictly enforced without exceptions.

Requirements for ATV:

• ALL drivers must present a physical, valid Driver’s License or Learner’s Permit. IDs are NOT permitted to drive.
• RENTALS ARE NO CASH MUST HAVE A CREDIT CARD
• You may rent a max of 2 ATVs under the same credit card.
• Only 1 driver is allowed per vehicle. There is NO switching allowed.
• Driver minimum age of 16yrs.
• Passenger minimum age of 16yrs.
• An adult must accompany minors under 18 years
• Helmets will be provided for each participant for safety.
• Pregnant women CANNOT participate
• Riders must wear closed-toed shoes (sneakers, water shoes, crocs, etc.)

The tour time is approximately 1 hour.

• Monday through Sunday
• After submitting the reservation, please complete the waiver. We will then send your tour time.
• Important: If you are driving, please remember that the park is 45 minutes away from San Juan and must arrive at least 1 hour before your tour.
• If you choose transportation, please note that the pickup time will be 2 hours before your scheduled tour.

*Just so you know, when reserving an adult, passenger, or child, you must first reserve the adult and proceed with an additional booking for the child by clicking the add another booking tab after completing the first booking.

Cancellations must be made 48 hours before the scheduled tour date and local time via EMAIL ONLY. A sales representative will respond with validation of the requested cancellation. The designated tour operator will fully charge those who intend to cancel within the 48-hour time frame. There will be absolutely NO EXCEPTIONS under any circumstance to waive any fees.

After submitting the requested tour, you agree to our 48-hour cancellation policy and acknowledge any cancellations made within the given time frame are to be considered a FINAL SALE. There will be No Re-scheduling, and NO REFUNDS will be given.

Please note some tours depend on weather conditions to function and may be affected. Unfortunately, mother nature is out of our control; any changes required will notify you immediately. For safety concerns, if a tour operator cancels the scheduled tour, the option of re-scheduling will be given, or a refund will be provided.

What an AMAZING tour and tour operator! We took the Scenic Drive and Rain Forrest Hike through Royal Caribbean on board Harmony of the Seas. We were initially a little nervous about the ride to the Rain Forrest, but there was NO REASON for that. This is a grade A++ tour company and would recommend them to ANYONE!!! This is A MUST DO when in San Juan, and there is no better tour operator than El Yunque Tours!

Our tour was wonderful. Our guides were very knowledgeable about the rainforest and Puerto Rico. They took us on a great hike and explained so much about the area, flora, and fauna. We liked how they explained how to prepare in situations of flash flooding and taking care of the land. Micheal gave special attention to our son which meant a lot to our family. Each guide was awesome and we would highly recommend this tour.

We loved every bit of the tour. I lived in Puerto Rico for 17 years and I was impressed by the Team's knowledge. I fell in love with our Island once again. My two boys loved it! You need to come and experience El Yunque at nightfall ...words cannot describe the beauty! The Team treated us with the utmost kindness and superb professionalism! I really enjoyed the tour. The tour is definitely doable without a tour guide, but Dan was very knowledgeable about the rainforest. I learned a lot and Dan and Jonathan took the time to even show us wildlife we encountered on the way to the waterfall. There are some steep areas and it is a workout on the way back, especially since it is hot. However, nothing extremely hard.
