The Best Portable Hammock

The Best Portable Hammock

By Colin Rosemont

Whether you’re heading to a campsite, park, mountain, or beach, a hammock can make your day that much more relaxing.

We spent more than 35 hours testing and researching lightweight, packable hammocks and decided that for everything from an afternoon catnap to an early morning sway with coffee in hand, ENO’s SingleNest Hammock is the best camping hammock for most people.

It’s extremely comfortable, easy to use, durable, lightweight, and stylish.

Available in 26 colors, this breathable, quick-drying nylon hammock is small enough to take anywhere but durable enough to last for years.

Grand Trunk Ultralight Starter Hammock

For hikers on a budget.

At an affordable price, this durable, ultralight option makes a great starter hammock.

Weighing just 1 pound and folding out to a reassuring cocoon of 9 feet, 4 inches long by 4 feet, 7 inches wide, the SingleNest Hammock from ENO is light enough to be used while hiking or camping in the backcountry but comfortable enough for everyday backyard use, too.

Made from stretch nylon material and reinforced with triple stitching at the seams, the ENO SingleNest Hammock has a stable yet silky feel that our testers identified as the most comfortable option in our lineup. Its attached compression sack works flawlessly, smooshing the hammock down to the size of a softball when closed and acting as a pouch for a phone or a book when the hammock is open.

The SingleNest also comes with strong wire gate carabiners and a nautical-grade line to hang the hammock, allowing it to safely and securely support up to 400 pounds. To top it all off, this hammock comes in 26 color schemes. Like with nearly all of the models we tested, you’ll need to buy hanging straps separately.

If you’re looking for an affordable, starter camping hammock, we recommend the Ultralight Starter Hammock from Grand Trunk . It weighs 12 ounces and measures 9.5 feet long by 4.5 feet wide. Unlike our other test models, this one will hold only up to 200 pounds, so it’s a bit more limited in terms of who can use it. On the plus side, though, it is made of polyester material, which repels water better than the traditional nylon.

The research

Why you should you trust us, who this is for, how we picked, how we tested, our pick: eno singlenest hammock, budget pick: grand trunk ultralight starter hammock, camping hammock straps, other hammock extras, camping hammock setup tips, care and maintenance, the competition.

For this guide, I consulted with backpacking and camping experts at the Mountain Shop in Portland, Oregon, the oldest outdoor store of its kind in the city. I spoke with Gary Lawton , an accomplished hiker who has successfully completed the triple crown of thru-hikes (the Pacific Crest Trail, the Continental Divide Trail, and the Appalachian Trail). I also spoke with Steve Korpi , the camping gear buyer for the Mountain Shop. Korpi curated the store’s selection of packable hammocks, so he knows a lot about them. Finally, I chatted with Seth Haber , the founder of Trek Light Gear, to understand the biggest misconceptions about hammocks.

As for me, I’ve written several Wirecutter outdoors guides so far, my favorite of which was all about telescopes . I also managed the Outdoors Gear Cooperative at my college. And before that I was the kid in high school who petitioned his parents to ditch his bed and instead sleep full time in a hammock. While more sensible heads prevailed and I kept my bed in its rightful place, I never let go of my love for the simplicity of swinging in a hammock—to me, if feels like being rocked in a cradle or gently floating out in the ocean. Since those early years, I have gone on to use hammocks endlessly in my travels across South America, Europe, and the US.

I’ve also suffered from chronic lower back pain for most of my adult life due to an accident that occurred many years ago, so I’ve turned to hammocks time and again for an important reason: They relieve the pressure on my back, which is often made worse by sitting in a normal chair. I am also 6-foot-2, so I was able to test out the hammocks with the slightly taller user in mind.

For this guide, we decided to focus on single, packable camping hammocks for people who want the best of both worlds in terms of comfort and portability. These hammocks are primarily meant for lounging, not sleeping, although you can easily catch some shut-eye in a packable hammock in good weather. If you do plan to sleep in any of our picks, see our notes in the Hammock extras section about what else you'll need to bring along.

A man relaxing in a red ENO SingleNest hammock in the middle of a forest.

Why focus on camping hammocks, specifically? Seth Haber, founder of Trek Light Gear, argues in a company blog post that if your traditional image of a hammock is thick rope construction and two wooden spreader bars, you’ve been brainwashed . Haber said thick rope hammocks are more prone to flipping over and in reality, they’re less comfortable and less practical than the packable models we’ve reviewed here. Lightweight camping hammocks, on the other hand, are traditionally made from nylon or polyester. They’re much more akin to the traditional style of hammock that millions of people throughout Central and South America sleep in every night. You can definitely set up these compact hammocks in your backyard, but we like that they can easily be packed up and transported to your favorite destination, too.

We chose to review only single camping hammocks, rather than doubles, because our experts told us that most of these models can actually fit two or more people (our testing proved that in most cases, this is true). Single hammocks also pack down smaller, making them a better choice for day hikers and beachgoers. However, double hammocks might be worth a look if you’re planning to frequently sleep in your hammock overnight, or if you plan to sleep in the hammock with someone else. “The extra width [of the double hammock] is what allows your body to get flat and overcome the C-shaped curve of the hammock,” Haber said.

The buck for this guide doesn’t stop at adults, though: When we set up our hammocks in a park for testing, young kids came running. They piled in and refused to stop swinging—and all of the hammocks in our testing pool proved their mettle in this first durability challenge. So whether you’re tailgating, heading to a family event, hiking backcountry trails, looking for some relaxation at the beach, or hoping for a makeshift swing for your kids, these hammocks are for you.

Four packed up hammocks sitting in a row on a log next to a water battle. The packed hammocks are all smaller than the bottle.

First, I scoured the Internet, wading through all of the reviews and recommendations I could find from reputable sources. Next, I interviewed camping and hammocking experts Gary Lawton and Steve Korpi from the Mountain Shop in Portland, Oregon. I also got some expert advice and analysis from Seth Haber, the founder of Trek Light Gear. In our efforts to be as thorough as possible, we also pored over other hammock reviews from CleverHiker , GearLab , and The Adventure Junkies .

Next, I took into account each hammock’s price, weight, weight-bearing capacity, dimensions, material construction, and available attachment systems. Based on all that research, we decided that the best camping hammocks needed to be comfortable, water-resistant, durable, and secure in their attachment systems. Bonus points were given for stylishness and ease of set up. Unfortunately, we did not find any hammock models that included high-quality suspension straps, so we researched and tested straps, too.

After the research phase, I ended up with 10 models to test for versatility, comfort, and ease of use.

First, I removed each hammock from its package and examined the stitching and materials. Was the fabric abrasive? Did the stitched seams feel raised and harsh, or were they smoothly woven into the hammock’s design?

Next, I set up all the hammocks in my yard. I didn’t know much about hammock design when I started this guide, but I had each of the 10 models up and ready to go in less than two minutes without any significant problems. Each hammock in our testing pool can be easily pulled out of a stuff sack, allowing it to go from packed to unfolded in a matter of seconds. After the hammock was fully spread out, I slung the hammock straps around two trees, clipped the carabiner (or hook, depending on the model) from the hammock to the suspension strap, and adjusted the height to get it fairly taut and ready for use.

If you plan to take your hammock outdoors, it will need to withstand the elements—so I started my durability tests by laying out the hammocks, spraying them with water, and leaving them to sit in direct Southern California sunlight for a week to see if they would fade or discolor. This also helped me judge how the different hammock materials handled getting soaked, and I was happy with how well most of the hammocks beaded water rather than allowing it to penetrate the material and drench the fabric.

I know how hard it can be to follow best practices for packing a hammock—after a long backpacking trip, I’m not very likely to lay the hammock out to dry before packing it up again. So to test how the hammocks might deal with this all-too-common issue, I packed damp hammocks in their bags and let them sit for a week before unpacking them and giving them a good whiff. All passed the smell test.

I also took the hammocks to Forest Cove Park in Agoura Hills, California, where I got feedback from all kinds of random passersby. The kids at the park took fondly to swinging in the hammocks, but adults also hopped in, many of them reminiscing about childhood memories of family picnics with hammocks. I crowdsourced valuable opinions that day, gathering input about which hammocks felt the most comfortable and secure for many different body types.

A man and a puppy sitting in a green hammock in a residential area.

Finally, a friend and I (both of us are tall, adult men) piled into each single hammock to ensure that they could withstand some extra weight. While some hammocks definitely felt more comfortable and secure than others with two adults, I’m happy to report that there were no hammock failures or ground falls during our testing.

A man relaxing in a red Eagles Nest Outfitters SingleNest hammock.

After we tested and researched packable hammocks for more than 35 hours, The SingleNest Hammock from ENO rose to the top as the best all-around lightweight hammock for most people. It can be used in any context, ranging from a permanent backyard setup, to car camping, to backcountry travel. When fully set up, the SingleNest measures out to 9 feet, 4 inches by 4 feet, 7 inches. This size gives some welcome extra legroom for those of us who are 6-plus feet tall, while still curving around enough to be form-fitting for shorter people, too.

Made of 70-denier high-tenacity nylon taffeta and weighing 1 pound, this robust hammock is also rated to support up to 400 pounds safely, which was more than many of the other hammocks we tested. When we put two adult men in the ENO hammock together, this weight limit proved to be true—we swung safely and it was by far the most comfortable option for two people.

Compared with most other hammocks we tested, the SingleNest felt especially comfortable and breathable on hot summer days. Unlike with other models, we were able to lay in the hammock in just a bathing suit without the hammock feeling abrasive on the skin or the nylon material getting too sticky with our sweat.

The SingleNest also packs down easily because of a multipurpose stuff sack that goes above and beyond. Unlike other comparable models, the SingleNest stuff sack comes with compression straps that shrink the hammock to nearly softball size (4 inches by 5 inches). When set up, the stuff sack serves another purpose, too, hanging attached to the middle of the hammock and acting as a great pouch to store snacks, your phone, or other small gear. Putting something with a little weight in the stuff sack even allows you to fold the sack over the hammock for cocoon-style protection from the sun or bugs.

The SingleNest also proved to be exceedingly durable during testing. The nylon material performed especially well on our water tests, beading water and not soaking through, even under the spray from a hose. The SingleNest is triple-stitched at the seams for reinforcement, making it feel more sturdy—and yet, unlike some of the other stitched models, the seams were not very noticeable or abrasive on the skin.

A closeup photo of the stitching on a red ENO SingleNest hammock.

One thing to remember is that you will need to buy suspension straps separately for this hammock (this was the case with all the hammocks we tested). To attach the hammock to suspension straps, the ENO SingleNest offers small aluminum wire gate carabiners at the end of a short nautical-grade cord to make for easy and secure setup options. Compared with the open-ended S-hook attachments on some of the other models we tested, these carabiners snap completely shut and hook firmly on the hanging straps, giving you an extra layer of security when swinging in your hammock. And when compared with the stainless steel carabiners of some other models, the SingleNest aluminum carabiners promoted smoother action, meaning they were less prone to getting jammed.

A closeup photo of the carabiner that securely holds the straps of the ENO hammock attachment system.

The icing on the cake: The SingleNest comes in nearly a dozen color schemes, giving you many color combinations by which to express your personality. While stylishness is not essential to a hammock’s function, we were surprised by how many people noticed this hammock’s fun colors while trying it out.

Overall, the SingleNest is neither the cheapest nor the most expensive lightweight nylon hammock we tested, but the way it handles the core details of comfort, safety, durability, and style makes it our top pick.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

This hammock doesn’t come with suspension straps for hanging the hammock. This is not a problem with just the SingleNest, of course, but that doesn’t make it any less annoying. You should also keep in mind that the SingleNest is really made with a single user in mind. We found that sometimes we wanted to pile an extra person in—and while it can support the weight, it just isn't designed for a long two-person hang. That’s why ENO makes the DoubleNest (check that one out if you’re looking for a high-quality two-person hammock). It’s also worth noting that compared with cotton material, the ENO’s nylon might tear slightly more easily.

A man relaxing in a camouflage patterned hammock with a straw hat on his chest.

Grand Trunk’s Ultralight Starter Hammock weighs 12 ounces, offering a nice, lightweight option for newbies who are looking for an affordable hammock to try out occasionally. It measures 9 feet, 6 inches by 4 feet, 6 inches, but it has a 200 pound weight limit. With its polyester taffeta construction, this hammock also stretches less than the other nylon-based models (which means it’s about half as strong).

On the plus side, polyester is super water resistant which meant that even after leaving this hammock outside for three weeks in Portland, Oregon, it showed little evidence of being weather worn. With S-hook attachments and a relatively thin-feeling material, this budget option definitely feels less strong than our top pick and less durable than our runner-up—but for its weight and price tag, the Ultralight Starter Hammock from Grand Trunk is a nice place from which to launch a new hammock obsession.

During my research, I quickly found that most hammocks don’t come with high-quality hammock straps. While you can certainly fashion your own hammock hanging straps out of spare rope or cord for a fraction of the price, hanging your hammock with nicer suspension straps is a safer and more durable option.

During my hammock testing, I also took a look at some of the most popular hammock straps on the market. I tested each set of straps with all of the different hammocks I had, working to understand how much weight they could support and how durable they felt. Most hammock straps work with any hammock—although our Sea to Summit pick requires that you use the company’s proprietary straps.

There are several designs of hammock straps on the market: daisy chain–style suspension straps, and thinner cord-style straps with knots tied every few inches. If you’re looking to buy a set of straps, I recommend gravitating toward the daisy chain style—I found them to be the most durable and versatile option of the two because they extend longer distances and offer exponentially more preset options to clip into. With this many loops, you can make micro-adjustments to the hanging height of the hammock, leading to the most comfortable hanging position possible.

The daisy-chain straps we liked during our testing— Rallt’s Hammock Straps , which offered good value for their price and versatility, the slightly burlier HangTight Hammock Straps from Nature’s Hangout, and the HangTight XL , which worked well for wider distances or larger trees—are back in stock after pandemic-related shortages. We also like similar straps from both ENO and Grand Trunk , but their higher price tags seem unjustified.

Due to hammocks being suspended in the air, you’re also likely to lose some extra heat while lounging—so if you’re purchasing a hammock as a primary sleeping space, you may also want to add insulating layers to keep yourself warm. We didn’t include these extras in this guide, but hammock experts say that carrying a pad, a tarp cover, and some extra insulation can make sleeping more pleasant. Be wary, though, as all of these extra pieces can add up in weight and can actually make your hammock system heavier than a comparable ground setup.

Good hammocks should be easy to set up and take down. After one or two trial runs, you should be able to go from a fully packed hammock and strap set to a fully ready lounger in less than two minutes, no problem. The hardest part of the setup process is finding two trees or fixtures that are both the proper distance apart from one another and can also support your weight in the hammock.

To start out, find two suspension points that are 10 to 20 feet apart and that are thick enough to support the weight of you in your hammock. Be sure to use tree-protector straps that are wide enough so as to not dig into the bark—otherwise, the straps can cause permanent damage to the tree. ENO’s video guide to responsible hammocking practices is a great place to start. After using your hammock for a while, you’ll start to get a feel for the best distances to look for between trees or poles for hanging your hammock. But while you’re getting started, you can also check out this awesome Hammock Hang Calculator . Just plug in your weight and the distance between your attachment points and the guide will calculate how high to set your suspension points.

Inevitably, your hammock will be exposed to the elements while in use. Whether someone accidentally drags their muddy shoes onto your hammock or spills their morning coffee before they’ve fully woken up, you may have to wash your hammock every once in a while to keep it looking and feeling fresh. To wash your hammock, simply remove the carabiners or attachment hooks, add a small amount of detergent to a washing machine, and wash your hammock by itself using cool water on a delicate wash cycle. To keep your hammock clean and smell free, you’ll want to make sure it’s dry before storing it in its stuff sack for extended periods of time.

Wise Owl Outfitters Single : This model doesn’t come with any kind of carabiner or attachment device—instead, basic cords act as tree straps, to which you’re supposed to attach your hammock with knots. This feels less stable and also means extended setup times. Plus, the hammock itself didn’t stand up to the comfort of our top picks due to its more abrasive raised stitching.

Fox Outfitters Neolite Single : Compared with its competitors, this model’s carabiners are of poorer quality, which makes the hammock itself less durable and less safe. Plus, the materials on this hammock felt more abrasive on the skin compared with the silkier feelings of our winners.

Hummingbird Single+ : This hammock is ultralight and easy to set up. But during our multiple outings with the Single+ and its unbelievably lightweight Hummingbird Tree Straps, we repeatedly heard from our testers that this model was less comfortable and the attachment system more concerning than its competitors due to its minimalist connection to the tree straps.

Rallt Single Hammock : This hammock initially led the pack on comfort and affordability, but it tanked during our water and spillage-based tests. Instead of repelling and beading away even the slightest amount of water, this model absorbed the liquids and stayed soaked for longer than any other models.

Kammok Wallaby: Weighing just 10 ounces, this is a solid lightweight option—but at only 8 feet and change in length, it left something to be desired in allowing tall people to fully stretch out. Kammok has, since our original testing, discontinued the Wallaby. A newer hammock called the Roo weighs about the same, but it’s just as short. The company also offers a “ double XL ,” which is 11 feet, 6 inches long.

I wish the directions were a little clearer. I followed them and the result was the first picture. I was so depressed after a long afternoon building it, by myself, 9 months pregnant as a surprise for my husband for fathers day. Once i figure out picture 2 i was very please. And now seeing it on the website im pretty confident that is correct. But i have 4 extra pieces that are not listed in the instructions. Otherwise it seems pretty great. I dont want to sit in when no one else is home cause i dont think ill be able to get out. Lol. But it looks comfy.. Erin. South yarmouth, MA. 2019-06-14 15:40:34

The hammock has an indigenous origin and its first records are from the 15th century, as in the letter by Pero Vaz de Caminha: "They were of wood, and of the sides of boards, and covered with straw, of a reasonable height; all in one piece, without any partition, they had many supports inside; and, from support to support, a hammock tied by the cables, high, in which they slept.” Letter from Pero Vaz de Caminha to D. Manuel dated Porto Seguro on May 1, 1500. The tradition of hand-weaving can be found in some regions of Brazil and the production of handcrafted hammocks in some houses is the main source of income, being one of the existing professions that is transmitted for generations. Thus, the hammock has become a Brazilian cultural symbol, especially in the northern and northeastern states of the country.

Orange Whittaker 1 Person Classic Hammock

The delicious saffron orange hue of this hammock is certain to enliven any spot you wish to hang it and relax. Woven by hand, this cotton hammock comes from Maya Artists of the Yucatán who create it in the same way they have for centuries. Long before the Spanish arrived upon the coasts of the Yucatan Peninsula, the Maya preferred to sleep and rest in hammocks. They considered the hammock to be like the loving embrace of a mother, due to the comfortable manner in which the body is held and swung within its cradle. Maya Artists of the Yucatan seek to preserve time-honored customs while also offering stylized versions of the original Maya hammock. For them, the hammock is a work of art. These hammocks are incredibly comfortable, easy to maintain, and may be stored just about anywhere.

Love this chair so much it’s a lot larger than I expected and very sturdy. It was surprisingly easy to assemble, and I did it all by myself so I was proud . I placed it in my yoga room to swing in and zen out. It took a while to get here (over a month) but that’s because of what’s going on in the world. I plan on getting two more for my outside deck... maybe in a darker color so when it gets wet it won’t show too much. The whir is beautiful and is simply perfect.... Jamiliah. The CleverHiker team continues to test new hammocks against our long-time favorites:

 • The Warbonnet Blackbird XLC earns a top spot for its comfort, light weight, and thoughtful design that make it and all-around standout.
 • The ENO DoubleNest is our favorite for two. It’s easy to setup and great for car camping.
 • The Hummingbird Single is a fantastic choice for anyone looking for a truly ultralight but comfortable hammock setup.

orange travel hammock

 • Warbonnet Blackbird XLC

Best hammock overall

Price: $200

Weight: 1 lb. 6.3 oz. (hammock, stuff sack, attached guylines, integrated bug net)

Weight Limit: 350 lb. (up to 275 lb. for comfort)

Dimensions: 132 x 62 in.

 • Easy to lay flat in
 • Built-in shelf
 • Integrated bug net
 • Can be used on the ground
 • Straps cost extra

The Warbonnet Blackbird XLC is one of the most comfortable backpacking hammocks on the market, and it’s particularly popular with thru-hikers because of its ultralight design. Some of the details that make the Blackbird our go-to include the asymmetrical cut, the large shelf panel for gear storage, and the ability to zip in a top cover for cold weather. When you order yours, you’ll have the option of a single layer or double layer Blackbird. The double-layer design increases the max weight capacity and allows you to use a sleeping pad with your hammock. We use the single-layer because it weighs less, and we prefer to use an underquilt instead of a pad when hammocking. If you’re looking for a top-quality ultralight hammock for backpacking, the Blackbird is your guy.

orange travel hammock

ENO Doublenest

Best two-person hammock

Weight: 1 lb. 3.5 oz. (hammock, stuff sack, carabiners)

Weight Limit: 400 lb.

Dimensions: 114 x 76 in.

 • Easy to hang
 • Lots of colors/patterns
 • A little heavy/bulky for backpacking
 • Straps sold separately

The extra-wide ENO DoubleNest is roomy and tough enough to fit two people comfortably, so it’s awesome for lounging around camp with a pal. It comes in a bunch of fun color combinations for showing off your personal style, and it’s incredibly easy to set up using the included carabiners. Straps aren’t included, though, so be sure to pick up some Atlas Straps (or Atlas XL Straps for extra length) if you’re planning to string it up between trees instead of on a hammock stand . We recommend the Doublenest for those who want the option to pair up while relaxing in a casual setting like the park, the beach, or on car camping trips. For solo hammockers, check out the Eno Singlenest or the ultralight ENO Sub6 .

orange travel hammock

 • Hummingbird Single

Best ultralight hammock

Weight: 5.5 oz. (hammock & stuff sack)

Weight Limit: 300 lb.

Dimensions: 104 x 47 in.

 • Highly packable
 • A little less roomy than others

The Hummingbird Single is incredibly lightweight and compact, so you can take it pretty much anywhere. We like bringing the Single (and Hummingbird’s Ultralight Tree Straps ) along with us as a luxury item on backpacking trips, so we have a comfortable place to sit and enjoy the views. It’s not as wide as some other hammocks, so it’s not our first choice to sleep in. But if you just need something simple for relaxing on a trail break, you’ll love the Hummingbird Single. If you want a little extra room for integrating into a complete overnight kit, check out the Hummingbird Single+ (116 x 63 in) or the Hummingbird Double (116 x 85 in). Check out our full review of the Hummingbird Single and Tree Straps here .

orange travel hammock

 • Hennessy Ultralight Backpacker Asym Zip

Best complete backpacking hammock system

Price: $240 (complete system)

Weight: 2 lb. 1.8 oz. (complete system)

Weight Limit: 200 lb.

Dimensions: 100 x 47 in.

 • Comes with everything you need to set up & weatherproof
 • Affordable for a complete setup
 • Can be used on the ground (requires trekking poles)
 • Requires some knots for set up
 • Low weight capacity

Whether you’re a first-timer or an experienced hammock backpacker, you’ll appreciate that the Hennessy Ultralight Backpacker Asym Zip comes complete with everything you need to hit the trail. Setting up the Backpacker requires some knowledge of simple knots, but once you get the hang of it the whole system goes up in a matter of minutes. The asymmetrical shape allows you to easily lay flat, and the bug mesh can be conveniently clipped back for stargazing. Overall, the Ultralight Backpacker hammock is an excellent value since you’re getting everything you need for overnighting, and it’s been a favorite with thru-hikers and casual backpackers alike for many years.

orange travel hammock

 • Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter Pro

Best budget hammock

Weight: 1 lb. 15.2 oz. (hammock, stuff sack, carabiners, integrated bug net, guylines)

Dimensions: 126 x 60 in.

 • A little heavier/bulkier than others

The Skeeter Beeter Pro is a good budget buy for people looking to dip a toe into hammock camping without spending a large chunk of change. It’s designed with a built-in no-see-um mesh canopy to protect against insects, and you can flip the whole hammock over to use it without the canopy if bugs aren’t a problem. The weight is also relatively low – especially for the price – but you’ll need to add a tarp and a suspension system to make it backpacking ready. The Skeeter Beeter Pro is an excellent choice whether you’re looking for a starter camping hammock or you need a comfy retreat in a buggy backyard.

orange travel hammock

 • ENO Skyloft

Best luxury hammock

Price: $130

Weight: 2 lb. 12.5 oz. (hammock, carabiners, stuff sack)

Weight Limit: 250 lb.

Dimensions: 84 x 36 in.

 • Very comfortable
 • Spreader bars make it roomy
 • Easy to set up
 • Bulky/heavy

The ENO Skyloft is perfect for those wanting a backyard lounger or a luxurious place to snooze on car camping trips. It’s designed with spreader bars at the head and foot to give you plenty of room to sprawl without the sides closing in on you. This unique hammock also allows you to switch between two modes: relax and sleep. Sleep mode gives you the perfect flat lay for napping, and pulling the cords at the head raises you up into the more upright relax mode for enjoying conversation or reading a book. The Skyloft is the créme de la créme if you’re looking for an ultra comfy place to hang around camp.

orange travel hammock

 • Sea to Summit Pro

Best value hammock

Price: $120 (includes straps)

Weight: 19.7 oz. (hammock, straps, compression sack)

Dimensions: 108 x 60 in.

 • Straps & compression sack included
 • Smaller than some
 • Fabric isn’t as soft as some
 • Buckle suspension takes some getting used to

The Sea to Summit Pro Hammock is an excellent value since it packs down super small in its included compression sack, it’s lightweight, and it comes with straps. On top of that, it’s incredibly strong with a high max weight capacity of 400 lbs. – pretty impressive for such a lightweight piece of gear. The included buckle suspension system takes some getting used to, but it’s simple to set up once you get the hang of it and very durable. The Pro Hammock is great for park hangs and car camping, but it’s also light and compact enough for backpacking if you pick up a tarp and bug net to complete the kit.

orange travel hammock

 • Dutchware Chameleon

Most versatile backpacking hammock

Price: $135 (hammock only)

Weight: 1 lb. 4.3 oz. (hammock, stuff sack, attached guylines)

Weight Limit: 200-350 lb. (depends on which fabric you choose)

Dimensions: 128 x 58 in.

 • Customizable

The Dutchware Chameleon is very appropriately named, because it can adapt to so many different situations. The innovative design allows you to transform this hammock from a bugproof summer haven to a toasty cold-weather shell in a matter of minutes by zipping in different accessories. The Chameleon has a ton of options for customization as well, like adding a shelf or a gear sling on the side. And while the custom process can be a little complex, Dutchware provides helpful descriptions and videos to walk you through the selection process. The Chameleon is the ultimate versatile system for serious hammock backpackers who hang no matter the trail conditions.

orange travel hammock

 • Lawson Blue Ridge

Best hammock/bivy hybrid

Price: $229 (hammock only)

Weight: 4 lb. 4.2 oz. (complete setup except suspension)

Weight Limit: 275 lb.

Dimensions: 90 x 42 in.

 • Heavy/bulky
 • Low peak height in bivy mode

Have you ever been in the backcountry and had to hike extra miles after a long day just to find a flat place to set up camp? Well, the Lawson Blue Ridge solves this common problem since it can be hung between trees or used on the ground like a large bivy. And while it does have a low peak height in bivy mode, the versatility is a huge plus in areas where your route alternates between thick forest and mountain ridges above treeline. The Blue Ridge is a little heavier and bulkier than some of our favorite backpacking hammocks, but the value is hard to beat since you’re getting two different shelter options for the price of one.

orange travel hammock

 • Tentsile Connect 3.0

Unique 2-person tree tent for car camping

Price: $599 (complete setup)

Weight: 20 lb. 12.8 oz.

Weight Limit: 880 lb.

Dimensions: 156 x 156 x 36 in.

 • Unique & fun shelter
 • Lots of pockets
 • Very expensive
 • Set up is more difficult & time consuming than standard hammocks

If you’re wanting a truly unique camping experience, look no further than the Tentsile Connect 3.0 . The Connect is a tent that you hang like a hammock, which gives you a great vantage point for epic views and provides some really nice airflow to keep you cool on hot nights. You’ll need a large area and three well-positioned trees to string this baby up, so it can be a little more difficult to use. But once you’ve found the ideal spot, the ratchet strap system is easy to get the hang of. There are a lot of details that make the Connect super comfortable to spend time in, like a hanging tablet pouch for watching movies during rain and a divider with six pockets at the head to keep your space tidy. While the Tentsile is spendy, it’s worth the cost for the one-of-a-kind camping experience it provides.

What’s Most Important to You in a Hammock?

Purpose/use.

Using a hammock as your main shelter for backpacking when it’s warm out can feel like a real treat. Sometimes we even carry a lightweight, compact one as a luxury item for hanging out around camp. Hammocks also make a primo spot to read a book or nap in the backyard and when car camping. However you choose to hang, there’s probably a hammock designed for that particular purpose.

Best backpacking hammocks

Best ultralight hammocks for packing along as a luxury item

Best lounging hammocks for the frontcountry

 • ENO DoubleNest

Hammocks can be pricey, especially when you factor in the added cost of straps and other accessories. We’ve found that more expensive backpacking hammocks tend to have higher-quality stitching, lower weight, and a smaller packed size. As with any piece of outdoor gear, how much you want to spend usually depends on how and how much you plan to use it, but there are solid options for a variety of budgets.

W EIGHT & PACKABILITY

If you plan to use your hammock for backpacking, it’s best to get one that’s lightweight and compressible. Remember to also factor in the size and weight of any accessories that go with it, like a tarp and a bug net. On the flip side, if you actually want a burlier option that can stand up to a lot of use at your car camping family reunion, heavier might be better.

Best ultralight hammocks

Best lightweight hammocks

 • Skeeter Beeter Pro
 • Sea to Summit Pro Hammock

Best heavy-duty hammocks

Hammocks come in a variety of shapes and sizes, so it’s important to look at the dimensions to make sure you’ll fit comfortably. It’s ideal to be able to lay diagonally in your hammock for the most ergonomic lounging, so pick one with an overall length that’s at least two feet longer than your height.

Best hammocks for people over 6 feet

SUSPENSION SYSTEM

There are many different ways to string up a hammock, and some of them are easier than others. Most models don’t come with straps, so you can mix and match suspension systems until you find what works best for you. If you’re not into revisiting your scout days and tying complex knots, go with a simple daisy chain and carabiner setup. If you want to build your own custom, ultralight kit , you’ll probably like whoopie slings and buckle suspension systems. Check out our Best Suspensions Systems section to see our favorites.

WHAT WE LOOK FOR IN A BACKPACKING HAMMOCK

 • Asymmetrical design for a flat lay
 • Single layer to save weight, because we’ll almost always use an underquilt instead of a sleeping pad in a hammock
 • Ultralight and compact design
 • We prefer to use  whoopie sling suspension
 • Some sort of storage (like a shelf, pocket, or sling)

WHAT WE LOOK FOR IN A BACKYARD/CAMPING HAMMOCK

 • Comfortable fabric
 • Spacious, maybe even room for two
 • Comes with carabiners on the ends
 • We prefer to use  daisy chain suspension

Best Suspension Systems

Whoopie slings.

Whoopie slings are an adjustable, lightweight way to hang a hammock, and they’re what we typically use for backpacking. Designs for whoopie slings have slight differences, but in general they use a simple loop and knot system that holds tension with weight, but can be easily adjusted when not under pressure. There are many different whoopie sling options on the market, but here are a few of our favorites:

 • Hummingbird Tree Straps – lightest weight & most affordable
 • Dutchware Whoopie Hook – highly customizable
 • ENO Helios – easiest to use

orange travel hammock

DAISY CHAIN STRAPS

Daisy chain straps are about as simple and convenient as it gets. They’re made up of two strong straps with many small loops at the end. Just wrap each strap around a tree and clip your hammock in on each side. Daisy chain straps aren’t as lightweight, compact, or adjustable as whoopie slings, but they’re a little quicker and easier to set up. This is why they’re the best type of suspension for hammocking in the backyard or for car camping, Here are a couple of our favorites:

 • ENO Atlas – readily available in most gear shops
 • ENO AtlasXL – longer
 • Grand Trunk Tree Straps – comes in fun color choices

orange travel hammock

BUCKLE SUSPENSION

Buckle suspension isn’t as common as daisy chain straps or whoopie slings, but they’re great because they’re ultralight and easy to use. Buckle suspension can be a little quicker to set up and take down than whoopie slings, but really the choice between the two will come down to your personal preference. Here are a couple of our favorite buckle suspension systems:

 • Dutchware Beetle Buckles – highly customizable
 • Warbonnet Buckle Suspension – most affordable

Best Underquilts

Most hammocks don’t easily accommodate sleeping pads to insulate you from cold air flowing under you. An underquilt is like a down blanket that attaches to the underside of your hammock to insulate you, and it’s an important part of your hammocking kit if you plan to do any backpacking with it. There are a ton of options available, and you can get custom quilts made to your specifications. These are a few of our favorites to get you started:

 • Enlightened Equipment Revolt V2 – High-quality ultralight quilt that can be customized. It’s a little pricey, but the warmth-to-weight ratio and coverage is hard to beat.
 • Warbonnet Wooki & Wooki XL – Made for Warbonnet hammocks, but can also fit other similarly sized hammocks. We like that the full length design helps keep the underquilt in place, and that the diagonally placed insulation saves weight.
 • Western Mountaineering Slinglite – Super lightweight and packable. We like that this underquilt is ready-made and therefore doesn’t require any waiting on a long lead time if you need it right away.

Best Hammock Tarps

For backpacking, you’ll want to pick up a good tarp to shelter you from wind and rain. Make sure the tarp you get is long enough to cover your entire hammock, and it’s always a good idea to set it up at home first to ensure it works for you. These are our favorite hammock tarps:

 • Sea to Summit Hammock Tarp – A little spendy, but it’s one of the lightest and most packable tarps out there. It’s also very easy to set up since it doesn’t require any knots and only uses three stakes .
 • ENO ProFly – Excellent value tarp with good coverage. The ProFly is very versatile, because the shape allows it to be used without a hammock to create a symmetrical sheltered area that can accommodate a few people.
 • Warbonnet Superfly – Custom all-weather tarp that provides maximum protection during wet and chilly weather.

Critical Hammock Considerations

orange travel hammock

Some hammock suspension systems will require you to know a few basic knots to achieve a safe setup. Make sure you practice any knots you’ll need for stringing up your hammock or for performing field repairs before you head out into the backcountry.

CHOOSING A HANGOUT SPOT

Finding the perfect set of trees for your hammock may take some trial and error, but you’ll quickly get the hang of recognizing great spots the more you use it. In general: always attach to live, sturdy trees that are at least six inches in diameter, and look above you for any dead branches or other hazards that may fall on your hammock. Set your hammock up at least 200 feet from trails and water sources to respect fellow hikers and wildlife. And lastly, don’t hang it higher than you’d want to fall. In areas where good hangin’ trees are sparse, you can use a hammock stand .

orange travel hammock

THE FLAT LAY

When you set up your hammock, look for the straps to be at about a 30° angle to the ground. This should leave your hammock with a nice curve in it. When you get in, position your body at an angle with your legs to one side and your shoulders to the opposite side. This will flatten the material under your back and eliminate any pressure points on your body. If you feel pressure points, you may have set your hammock up too taut.

LEAVE NO TRACE

Ropes and cords can damage trees, so you should always use a tree hugger strap with your suspension system (if it’s not already included as part of the design) to disperse the pressure put on the bark. Some parks and wilderness areas don’t allow hammocking at all, so make sure you check all local guidelines before you go.

Honorable Mentions

This might just be the hammock of your dreams:

The Roo and Roo Double are basic, comfy hammocks for lounging in the backyard or car camping. Ultimately we like the ENO Doublenest and Singlenest better for the small weight & space saving and the wider range of color options.

Orange Hammock Wildlife Management Area

A hammock of live oaks and saw palmetto on Orange Hammock Wildlife Management Area

Located in the City of North Port, the recently acquired Orange Hammock Wildlife Management Area (WMA) offers visitors a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities, including hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing, hiking, bicycling and horseback riding. The more than 5,000-acre area has approximately nine miles of trails, including the seven-mile Tarflower Trail and the two-mile Slough Point Trail.

A marsh full of sagittaria plants

The acquisition of Orange Hammock, situated between the RV Griffin Reserve and the Longino Preserve, creates a 121,000-acre conservation corridor of environmentally sensitive land between the Peace River, Myakka River and Charlotte Harbor. The WMA protects wetlands critical to the area's drinking water supply while conserving habitats for a wide array of imperiled, rare and common wildlife. Active land management will make the WMA an increasingly excellent place to view wildlife.

The Race Is on to Preserve Orange Hammock Ranch Forever

Orange Hammock Ranch

Image: Everett Dennison

Preserving beautiful, unspoiled Orange Hammock Ranch  has been a priority for local governments, nonprofits and environmentalists for decades. Now, thanks to the Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast and the state of Florida, the property could soon be protected forever, assuming the COVID-19 pandemic doesn’t dampen fundraising efforts.

Protecting Orange Hammock Ranch has been an aim of the Conservation Foundation since the organization was founded in 2003. The nonprofit first had to convince the landowners to sell the property to the state for $21 million. Once that was arranged, the ranch was added to a list of properties being considered for conservation through the state’s land acquisition trust fund, Florida Forever.

The state has purchased more than 814,000 acres of land worth more than $3.1 billion through Florida Forever, but the Orange Hammock Ranch deal languished for years because of local and state politics. State leaders finally voted in February to allocate $19.5 million to buy the land, a deal that depends upon the Conservation Foundation raising $1.5 million before the end of May to make up the difference.  The foundation has raised $900,000 so far, and a group of donors has pledged to match $300,000 if the foundation can raise an additional $300,000.

The ranch takes up 5,777 acres in North Port and contains mostly wetlands. Used in recent years for hunting, the property has never been used for agriculture and is largely untouched by human hands. Quail, snakes, bears and an endangered Florida panther have been spotted there. Part of the Myakka Island Conservation Corridor, it’s a crucial connection to existing natural preserves, and the ranch’s rainfall feeds waterways that are vital sources of drinking water for North Port.

Since the state’s money was allocated for the purchase before the coronavirus pandemic, the economic damage caused by the virus has not affected the deal. But Conservation Foundation president Christine Johnson acknowledges that raising money for land conservation is more difficult when there are so many emergency needs. Still, she’s optimistic. “This pandemic is showing the need for open public space,” Johnson says. “We need to have more places like Orange Hammock Ranch for people to walk on, minister to their souls and improve their mental health.”

Andrew – 02/10/2016

http://hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php/121529-new-version-of-Warbonnet-Travel-Sock

I got the newest version of the Warbonnet Travel Sock about a month or so ago. They may be found here: https://www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/product/blackbird-traveler-accessories/

There is no more velcro-type material. It now has a simple slit at the ends that is held closed by the weight of the sock itself.

I clipped it right to my cinch buckle of my WB Traveler Hammock with a small S-biner that I already had. It is perfect with just the right amount of tension to rest on my hammock’s ridge line. This is one of the huge benefits of getting all your components from one house –> it all fits like they were meant to be 🙂

You can leave it connected to the hammock and pack everything in the large stuff sack that came with the sock. It appears that they meant to give you extra room in that sack in order to do so. You could thus store and put the thing up already “assembled” and simply hook in your UQ after set up. You do not need to thread your hammock’s suspension through the ends of the sock every single time you use it. In a way, it is also like a storage snake skin, or “pig”, because you could leave all your sleeping gear/UQ assembled, zip it all up attached and within the Travel sock, and put it away like that.

The simple crescent shaped zipper design is deceptive in that it works ridiculously well. It allows venting at the “top” or near your head to the “side” but still opens completely to essentially provide a half cover that is extremely open and provides near total sock-less access to your hammock – like there was no sock at all but with protection from the wind on one side.

Open.

Closed.

With the sock, I can get away with using a smaller overhead tarp or even a poncho. Aesthetically, I really appreciate how much less of a “visual footprint” a winter sock consumes as opposed to the large, exclusionary enclosure that large tarps commandeer. Using a winter/wind sock as opposed to a tarp (though they can be used together) is really like using a bivy bag or bed roll when on the ground.

This is now a necessary part of my winter hammock gear.

I have both the traveler net and traveler sock i prefer not to use any net or covering at all but i like to carry something for a few just in case scenarios. The traveler sock is more versatile than the traveler net but for bug protection in hot weather the traveler net wins. On the other hand what i like best about the traveler sock is that it takes up a lot less pack volume than the net and can be used for so many purposes. I can carry a lighter tarp and lighter underquilt because of the rain cover and heat protection of the sock. Also it can be used for bug protection with no problem. I will definatly be taking the traveler sock with me on all my trips for now on especially since it packs down so small.

Justin – 10/19/2015

I use the Net and Sock with the Traveler hammock. I have used the net extensively it works just as described and can be used as a bug net when ground sleeping. The sock does really add warmth it’s incredible but I’ve only used it in cool temperatures so far, I cannot wait for this winter. The sock can be used as a bivy just like the net you really only need to hang one end and steak out the other or figure some other situation out that’s similar when you cannot hang.

The Net and Sock are individually very light, each are well made easy to add on or leave out for different trips or times of the year each of these are totally worth the purchase. I love my hammock setup.

Keith Kelley – 07/20/2015

Well made, light, pack able, easy to use. I’m looking forward to using this for many hangs. I liked it so much I bought a second and think I have converted my girlfriend into a hanger as well, she just bought a traveler I am a devoted Warbonnet fan great stuff that is well made with great customer support Keith

willmann – 02/05/2015

forgive me but i use the sock with my eno hammock system and love it i am able to set this sock up and still use my eno gear sling inside the sock and underneath the hammock without issue one thing i did find if you use the 2qzq extenders the suspension straps run through a bunched drawcord end rather than a velcro end this makes this much quieter when in use.

anyhow love warbonnet and as soon as my wife is not paying attention to my debit card statement again ill be purchasing the superfly and dumping the profly. thanks B.

ScottM – 06/23/2014

Finally got a chance (need) to use the netting on a week long camping and rafting trip. The netting is durable, the zippers are well placed and the whole package is easy setup and use.

Might be buying one for my son soon!

Rob in Green Bay – 05/14/2014

This net works fantastically with the Warbonnet Traveler hammock and its structural ridge line. There is plenty of room inside the net due to the generous amount of netting used but the net doesn’t hang down in your face or get in the way of items hanging from your ridge line. Plus, I love having the option of not using the net in the winter. The net compresses easily along with the hammock and both fit easily inside my hammock sleeves. Overall, this was a great add-on option for the Traveler and I would buy it again in a heartbeat!

Jackpine German – 04/28/2014

I was testing out some new gear in the backyard, it was 37 degrees and very windy, I would of went inside if it weren’t for the travel sock. It shielded me and my quilts from the wind and I stayed toasty warm. It held no condensation inside and breathed well with the zipper fully shut. I found the zippers easy to use for getting in and out.. Setup was quite easy just slip the suspension lines thru the Velcro holes and done. Very nice item to have with an open tarp in cold windy conditions.

Rick Judson – 04/19/2014

This net is very light & well made. It would be nice if some simple instructions were included & there was some string pulls on the zippers. This net is definitely worth the money & comes in a nice stuff sack.

Michael – 03/14/2014

I just got back from a night out with the Travel net and of course the no_seeum netting protected me all night. There are to double sided zippers so getting in and out is very easy. My friend owns the eno bug net and it weighs a ton compared to Warbonnets. Not only is the weight a plus but the opening is much larger making it so your not cut off from the group when the Travel Net is set up. Ohh yeah the price is unbelievable for all of the upgrades that this net provides compared to other bug nets. It is the best bug net on the market as far as I am concerned. Buy it now save yourself the trouble. Even making your own is a bad idea. I tried that route. It will end up costing you about the same amount of money and it won’t be built as well as this one. Just throw your money at Warbonnet and I can assure you it will be well spent.

Jerzybears – 03/07/2014

We just tried out our Traveler Socks on the AT last weekend. The temperature was 22 degrees. I installed the sock on my and my husband’s Hennessey’s and settled in for the night. The night was cold with a breeze but we were tucked in like bugs in a rug. For the midnight dash to the outhouse, the zippers were easy to find and open. I checked the temp in my hammock (temp watch) and it showed 30 so it does work to warm it up in there. Russ kept a small hole open because he likes the moving air, but he was totally content with the purchase. Good work guys!

Anonymous – 03/06/2014

Great bug net. I am using this with my DIY hammock and it fit’s perfectly. Great quality zippers and materials. Could not be happier.

Bill S. – 12/27/2013

I’ve bought a bunch of Warbonnet products, Brandon the owner, makes top quality gear. I purchased a Multicam sock to go w/ my Warbonnet Multicam Blackbird. Doing a lot of cold weather hanging, this sock is clutch. It’ll give me anywhere from 15* degrees + in my hammock. When it’s 30* or lower w/ snow on the ground it makes a world of difference. I love that I can now convince my wife to tag along in the cold, since she knows she won’t freeze in her hammock. Pair this w/ a Warbonnet Multicam Yeti underquilt that Brandon makes and your all set. Go one step further and pick up one of the awesome tarps they make and your golden. I chose the Multicam Superfly for myself, my wife and son both pitch a MambaJamba tarp w/ door kits. But back to the review, if you cold weather hang, grab this sock, you won’t regret it. It allows me to get out in colder weather when I couldn’t before. Warbonnet Outdoors makes great gear. Thanks Brandon!

Hammock Time Tiki Tours - Orange Beach, Alabama

H ammock Time Tiki Tours is the perfect tiki boat tour in Orange Beach, Alabama! Enjoy time on the water with an experienced captain who makes sure your trip is amazing.

Hammock Time Tiki Tours

I had the opportunity to enjoy a two-hour Hammock Time Tiki Tour with a bunch of other writers on a hosted trip.

We try to go out monthly to enjoy a different dolphin tour or water-based activity in the area now that we live in Gulf Shores.

I can honestly tell you that I am already planning multiple return trips with Captain Glenn!

His goal is to make sure you have the best experience possible while spending time with him. This was one of my most unique and fun Orange Beach boat tours.

At the start of the trip, Captain Glenn asks everyone what they want to see, if they have any goals or must-visits for the tour.

After talking through the options, including stopping at the Flora-Bama Yacht Club or Ole River Grill , the Avenue Pub, Bird Island, or Walker Island, or spending time cruising around looking for dolphins, everyone gets to decide what they want to do.

Our group decided to go for a leisurely boat tour, looking for a pod of dolphins and enjoying the views of Ono Island and celebrity houses, Ole River, Cotton Bayou, and Terry Cove.

The boat tour was incredibly relaxing, with friends enjoying the hammocks, sitting at the tiki bar talking, and dancing around to Captain Glenn's amazing music list.

I may need to make Captain Glenn's Spotify list my new work playlist; it is that good. If you want to play your own personal playlists there is Bluetooth audio.

I love that you can design your own great adventure! I am going to surprise my husband with a private sunset cruise this summer. An early anniversary trip on the water to look for dolphins and enjoy the area.

Tiki Cruise Options

 • 2 Hour Island Tour
 • 4 Hour Island Tour
 • Private Island Tours
 • Sunset Cruises

Enjoy a relaxing tiki boat tour from Orange Beach ! The boat holds up to 6 passengers on a group or private tour.

Why you will love Hammock Time Tiki Tours

 • Captain Glenn is amazing
 • Tiki bar with seating for 6 people
 • 2 double hammocks
 • Clean actual restroom/bathroom on the pontoon boat. You can take a leaky on the tiki.
 • Treasure chest filled with fun really cool games on the Orange Beach Tiki Boat

What to bring with you on a Tiki Boat Tour

We highly suggest bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for the tour.

You can bring your own snacks and drinks onboard the tiki boat. They have clean ice for mixers and drinks.
