The capital of Malaysia , Kuala Lumpur and the city-state Singapore are close enough to each other that most travelers decide to visit both cities in one go. There are many ways of getting from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore including: by train, bus, plane, or car.

In this post, we will give you all the information you need to decide how to get to Singapore from Kuala Lumpur and vice versa.

From Singapore To Kuala Lumpur By Train

If you think that taking a train is the fastest way to get from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore, you are simply wrong.

There is no direct train between these two cities. From KL, you can travel by train to Gemas, then change for a train to Johor Bahru, and then to Woodlands in Singapore.

It’s a very long route and… it’s also quite expensive.

Taking a train from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore is definitely one of the worst options to travel between these two cities.

From Kuala Lumpur To Singapore By Bus

It’s the option we have always been choosing. Taking a bus from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore is very convenient.

The coaches are usually spacious, you have folding armchairs that you can comfortably sleep on.

It takes about 9 hours to get from KL to Singapore by bus (including border crossing). You will pay about $10 for a one-way ticket .

One thing that you need to remember is to… dress warmly.

I remember when we’ve been traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore a few years ago, and we’ve been wearing t-shirts, shorts, and flip flops. We haven’t been colder in the Arctic Circle than in this southeast Asian bus!

From Kuala Lumpur To Singapore By Car

This option only makes sense if you have your own car. Most car rental companies won’t allow you to take their car abroad.

The trip from KL to Singapore takes about 4 hours.

From Kuala Lumpur To Singapore By Plane

Flying from KL to Singapore is arguably the best way to travel between these two cities.

The flight takes about one hour and it’s relatively cheap. You will pay about $50 one way.

Tips For Traveling From Kuala Lumpur To Singapore

Be sure you have a valid visa..

The citizens of many countries in the world don’t need a visa when entering Singapore (Poland included).

There are some people that still need a visa to get to Singapore. The full list of countries can be found here .

Basically, the citizens of level I countries will need a Singapore e visa, while the citizens of level II countries will need a standard, paper visa.

Make Sure You Are Not Importing Prohibited Goods.

When we’ve been traveling from KL to Singapore, we needed to wait for more than an hour for one passenger. He was kept by the customs officers. It turned out he had too many packages of cigarettes in his bag and didn’t claim it on the border.

The guy was a heavy smoker (I can tell because he’s been smoking every time the bus stopped). He tried to explain that the cigarettes are for personal use only but the officers weren’t convinced. After some time, they finally let him go.

Be sure to check the Singapore customs website before you travel to avoid situations like that when you travel.

Take Your Time.

If you have a plane to catch, make sure you have enough time in case something goes wrong.

Buses and trains are sometimes late. Your car may break. Unexpected situations may happen so be sure you have enough time to get to the airport on time regardless of the circumstances.

How to Travel From Kuala Lumpur to Singapore by Plane, Bus, and Car

A trip from the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur to Singapore, the world's only city that is also an island nation, takes travelers to the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. The two destinations are only about 220 miles (354 kilometers) apart, so while there are plenty of quick flights between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, those looking for more adventure may want to take a bus or car.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From Kuala Lumpur to Singapore? 

An inexpensive and efficient way to get from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore is by bus. The ride typically takes between five and six hours, depending on traffic and processing time at the border. Prices vary widely depending on the company and how luxurious the vehicle is; some include food service, onboard Wi-Fi , and reclining seats. Aeroline (five hours, 20 minutes, from $22) leaves every four hours from Corus Hotel Kuala Lumpur, and Grassland Express (five hours, 6 minutes, from $25) departs five times a day opposite Berjaya Times Square (Bukit Bintang). Buses from Kuala Lumpur arrive in locations all over the city, but many routes terminate in the Golden Mile Complex on Beach Road in Singapore located just south of Little India. Book your ticket online, over the phone, or in person at least one day prior—or many days in advance if traveling during busy holidays such as Hari Merdeka or around the end of Ramadan .

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From Kuala Lumpur to Singapore? 

Several airlines fly between Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Singapore Changi Airport throughout the week, with approximately 55-minute flights starting at about $15 for a one-way ticket. Some airlines serving this route include Jetstar, AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, SilkAir, Malindo Air, and Singapore Airlines, with many offering daily flights.

How Long Does It Take to Drive?

The 220-mile (354-kilometer) drive from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore takes about three hours, 45 minutes on Lebuhraya Utara-Selatan/E2, which for the most part is straight and in excellent condition. Suburban concrete eventually gives way to the green blur of palm and durian plantations along the route, allowing you to see a bit of the Malaysian countryside. Some sections of the trip have tolls (E37 and E2 in Malaysia), and you will have to cross a very busy border between countries. Before you go, read up on road requirements for the two countries, as well as Immigration and Checkpoints Authority information for entering Singapore.

Singapore offers many free parking lots and you can use a mobile app to reserve a parking space (paid by the hour).

When Is the Best Time to Travel to Singapore?

The ideal time to visit Singapore depends on what you are seeking in a vacation. If dry weather is important to you, head to the island nation during the summer months of June, July, and August, though air quality can be an issue. Try to catch the Singapore Food Festival , a month-long celebration or if you would prefer fewer crowds, make a trip in the fall, when The Singapore Grand Prix , part of the Formula One World Championship, takes place. 

Do I Need a Visa to Travel to Singapore? 

People from most countries may stay for free for 90 days in Singapore and do not need a  tourist visa , though some nationalities will need the documentation. When entering Singapore, travelers are usually required to show a passport valid for six months, an electronic arrival card, an onward ticket, and proof of funds for your whole stay in the country. Review all the requirements before making the trip and don't lose the exit card you are given, which is needed when you leave Singapore.

Can I Use Public Transportation to Travel From the Airport? 

The Singapore Changi Airport is at the eastern end of the island, about 11 miles (19 kilometers) from the city center. The SMRT subway leaves every 10 minutes and is a 35-minute ride to the city; you will make a two-minute transfer in Tanah Merah and end up at City Hall (costs start at $2). Another easy option is to take a taxi (16 minutes, from $17) with SMRT Taxi, or ComfortDelGro, among others. Jayride offers shuttles (16 minutes, from $15), and rental cars are available for rental at the airport.

What Is There to Do in Singapore?

Singapore offers various activities for tourists, from hiking in green parks to exploring the Singapore Zoo's endangered animals set up in cageless housing to relaxing on the island's east coast beaches and Sentosa Island. Several museums in the civic center highlight ancient history, modern art, and more. Dining on Indian, Malay, or Cantonese cuisine at food courts known as "hawker centers" is a fun way to get immersed in the local scene, as is shopping for souvenirs at the markets around Little India and Chinatown. Kuala Lumpur To Singapore Train

Taking the Kuala Lumpur to Singapore train can be an adventurous experience for rail travel enthusiasts and a cheap way to travel from KL to Singapore. However there are some drawbacks:

• The journey is very long and slow: over 7 hours and, depending on which train you catch, much of it at night. 
• The trip across the Causeway from Johor Bahru to Woodlands Singapore together with the two customs and immigration stops adds to the journey time and can be frustratingly slow and tedious.
• The train itself is fiercely air-conditioned and uncomfortably cold.
• Facilities on the train are basic.

Here is a review of my recent Intercity Kuala Lumpur to Singapore train trip (and back).

Update as at January 2024 : The information below is now out-of-date. The journey has become even more complicated and slower - you now have to take the ETS Train from KL to Gemas (taking 2h 34 min), then change to the Gemas to JB Sentral Train (taking 4h 36 min plus waiting time) then the shuttle train from JB Sentral to Woodlands (5 minutes plus waiting time).  If you want to take this Kuala Lumpur to Singapore train journey you can book tickets on KTM's website .

A hundred years ago you could do the whole journey on one train. That's progress for you! 

Electrification and modernisation of the Gemas to JB section has still not been completed (several years overdue).

Train Schedule Effective From 10 October 2015

This information is now out of date. I will update once the Gemas to JB electrification is completed . In the meantime refer to KTMB's website for up to date schedules.

Basically there are just three trains per day in each direction:

You will note that the train terminates in JB Sentral (in Johor Bahru, Malaysia). From there you have various options to make your way to Singapore (see Crossing the Causeway below).

Again the train starts at JB Sentral. You have to get from Singapore to JB Sentral first.

You can find the full timetable, including arrival and departure times at intermediate stations, on KTMB’s website .

Classes of Travel

For regular seating there are three classes; Premier, Superior and Economy. I went on Superior (RM33) and returned on Economy (RM18) and there is almost no difference in standard of comfort except that the air-conditioning in Economy was even more freezing than in Superior. Premier class has plusher seating and is more spacious, configured three seats across (two on the left of the aisle and one on the right) whereas Superior and Economy are four seats across.

In Superior and Economy there is no middle arm-rest so not great if you are travelling alone and are seated next to a stranger.

Sleeper berths are popular so better to book well in advance , particularly if you want the best sleeper cabins (Premier Night Deluxe Class).

Update as at 2024: There are no sleeper trains any more on this route.

Ticket Prices Kuala Lumpur to Singapore Train 

The best class of sleeper cabins have their own private toilet and sink but everybody else has to use the communal toilets situated at the ends of each carriage. They are fairly basic as you can imagine but at least toilet tissue and paper towels are provided which is better than most public toilets in Malaysia.

You may have a cafeteria coach on your train which sells simple meals, snacks and drinks (non alcoholic).

The Kuala Lumpur to Singapore train has lengthy stops at some stations (up to 15 minutes) giving time for passengers to get off, warm up and for smokers to light up. 

How to Book Tickets

You could just turn up at KL Sentral and buy tickets at the station but if you want to be sure of getting a seat or a berth it is probably better to book online in advance through KTMB's website , or through one of the online ticket websites. 

Crossing the Causeway

The most painful part of the journey to Singapore is crossing the Causeway which divides the two countries. The train terminates at the modern and spacious JB Sentral station in Johor Bahru. Passengers wishing to proceed on to Singapore have to exit JB Sentral through a series of pedestrian walkways and escalators and enter the adjoining Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex, also known as Bangunan Sultan Iskandar. More escalators and corridors lead you to the Malaysian Immigration counters where you have to get your passport stamped for leaving Malaysia. 

Then you have to cross the Causeway (bridge) itself and you can either take the train known as Shuttle Tebrau to Woodlands ( a 5 minute journey) or a bus (journey time depends on traffic conditions but long delays at peak times are normal). 

I was planning to take the Shuttle train but did not realise that they get booked up 28 days in advance as the service is mainly used by workers doing their daily commute to and from Singapore. So I had to take the bus (many bus operators to choose from) which took about 30 minutes to reach the Woodlands (Singapore) side of the Causeway where you have to disembark and be processed at Woodlands CIQ. More queuing at Immigration counters (you even have to fill in an arrival card) then baggage X-ray before descending to the bus platforms to find your bus for the next onward stage of you journey in Singapore. 

When returning from Singapore back to Malaysia it is the same tedious procedure in reverse.

Of course if you take the long distance coach from KL instead of the train you still have to go through the double CIQ hassle. Even if you are driving your own car, there are long queues to cross the Causeway. 

Next time I go to Singapore I think I will fly to save the bother.

Changes Coming to the Kuala Lumpur to Singapore Train

The extension of the Electric Train Service is continuing. Already the ETS runs as far south as Gemas (as at March 2016) and the plan is to complete it all the way to JB Sentral in the coming months. When completed the journey time will be reduced and there will be more frequent trains.

Further into the future is the planned High Speed Train from KL to Singapore, a bullet-style train which could reduce the journey time to just a couple of hours. This project is still at the advanced planning stage so I imagine it will not happen for another 5 years or so. Update as at January 2021: The High Speed Rail project has sadly been scrapped. Disappointing!

What to expect when visiting Singapore

For a small island city-state, Singapore is a huge tourist hub in Southeast Asia. In 2017, the number of tourists visiting Singapore was actually 3x more than its population!

This is for good reason. Head to downtown Singapore and you’ll find a number of tourist attractions, all connected by efficient and high-quality transportation.

To revisit your childhood, there’s Universal Studios and the resort island of Sentosa. For shopping, head to Orchard Road. For art, visit the Kampong Glam area. For an amazing night and light show, you have to visit Marina Bay Sands.

3 ways to get from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore

You have plenty of bus options when travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore. There are several departure points within Kuala Lumpur too, which is why we highly recommend booking online beforehand. This way it will be easier to find the best deals and schedules!

They have several departure points in Kuala Lumpur, below are the schedules for each location:

Bus schedules from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore

Transtar Travel offers comfortable tourist buses for the 5-hour journey from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore. But if you want more luxury, their solitaire buses offer cozy cocoon seats, your own TV, and free meal or snacks.

They have at least 3 departure points – Berjaya Square and Jalan Imbi in the city centre and Kuala Lumpur Bus Terminal (TBS), about 13 km south of the city centre. All of these arrive at Golden Mile Complex in the east of downtown Singapore.

Immigration Checkpoints

About 4 hours into your journey from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore, your bus will stop at Johor Bahru for customs and immigration. You will get off the bus with all your belongings and have your passport stamped to show you have left Malaysia.

Once you have returned to your bus (make sure you remember which bus you took!), it will cross the border to Singapore before stopping again at Woodlands Checkpoint for Singapore’s customs and immigration. You will have to fill out an entry card and also have your passport stamped.

After this, return to your bus for the final time before continuing your journey for the final 30 minutes to the city centre.

Kuala Lumpur to Singapore by Train

Years ago, at least 3 direct trains operated from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore every day. Currently though, this route is suspended as both countries prepare to build high-speed rail. For now, you’ll have to take at least 3 trains if you’re really determined to travel by rail.

Another thing to note is that you’ll have to travel this route at night. That includes a 2-hour midnight stopover at the railway junction in Gemas.

Are you up for that kind of adventure? If so, continue reading for a step-by-step guide when taking the train from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore.

Step 1: Kuala Lumpur to Gemas by Train

Your first train is to Gemas, a railway station about 170 km south of Kuala Lumpur. There are 2 trips available for this route every day, departing from KL Sentral at 12:12 and 21:35.

Unless you want to spend a night at Gemas, your best connecting train from here to Johor Bahru departs at 02:00. We recommend that you take the evening train from Kuala Lumpur, which arrives in Gemas at 23:59. This way, you only have to wait 2 hours for your connecting train to Johor Bahru.

Travel time from Kuala Lumpur to Gemas takes almost 2.5 hours. A ticket costs 31 MYR ($6.50) when you book online on Baolau .

As a popular railway junction, Gemas Train Station is surrounded by shops and small-town eateries. You should be able to find somewhere to eat even at midnight, or you can just rest in the train station’s waiting area.

Step 2: Gemas to Johor Bahru by Train

From Gemas, you will continue by train for 210 km to Johor Bahru in Malaysia’s southern tip.

We suggest taking the 02:00 train from Gemas to Johor Bahru. But here are other options you have:

This leg of your train journey takes around 4.5 hours. A ticket costs 21 MYR ($5) when booked online through Baolau .

Step 3: Johor Bahru to Singapore (Woodlands Checkpoint) by Train

From Johor Bahru, the train that crosses the border to Singapore only takes 5 minutes. You should buy your ticket at the train station for 16 MYR ($3.30) before heading to the customs and immigration office.

Woodlands Train Checkpoint

The good thing about the Woodlands Train Checkpoint is that it already has both Malaysian and Singaporean immigration offices in one location. You won’t have to make 2 stops as you will with the bus.

Here’s what your train itinerary for this route would look like:

Train Itinerary

First, you will be directed to Malaysian customs and immigration for a passport stamp and customs check. Bring all your luggage for this step!

And then, on to the Singaporean side. Here, you will fill out an entry card before they also stamp your passport.

After that, you can finally enter Singapore! Note that Woodlands Checkpoint is about 35 km north of downtown Singapore. So after you are cleared at immigration, you will need to take a bus, train, or taxi to reach your destination.

Kuala Lumpur to Singapore by Flight

The first step to actually get to Kuala Lumpur airport isn’t as easy as most may think. With the airport situated 45 km from Kuala Lumpur city centre, it requires some effort to get there.

However, you do have 3 options: the train (30 minutes), the bus (1 hour), or a taxi (1 hour). Fares start from 12 MYR ($2.50). You can visit our page on Kuala Lumpur Airport for more details on this.

Air Asia normally offers the cheapest flights from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore, with airfares starting from 64 MYR ($13.40) if you book your tickets in advance. Other carriers operating this route are Firefly and Malaysia Airlines.

The flight departs from Kuala Lumpur International Airport and arrives at Changi Airport in Singapore after a little over an hour.

Check Flights with Skyscanner

From Changi Airport, you’ll have to travel 25 km southeast to reach downtown Singapore. To get there, you can take the train for 5.50 SGD ($4), a shuttle bus for 9 SGD ($6.50) or a taxi for around 30 SGD ($22).

Our preferred ride is the shuttle service offered by Klook . It picks you up from the airport and drives you straight to your hotel for 9 SGD ($6.50). Travel time is 30 to 50 minutes depending on the number of stops your bus makes.

TIP: If you decide to travel by plane, please consider including a carbon compensation fee to reduce your impact on the environment.

The best so far coz this time it was all male steward on the economy cluster. They were polite, efficient & genuinely courteous. They do not judge you when you ask for more food & peanuts.

My first course flight (Aor-Kul) was cancelled in the morning, and they asked me to board the night flight hence I need to transit overnight for the 2nd flight (Kul-Myy) that supposed to be on the same day. The overnight stay was not provided, (I'm traveling with my spouse, a daughter (5 y.o.) and an infant (2 months old). Hence I booked Sama Sama Hotel at my own expense (fortunately using my enrich miles points). Other than this issue, all services is good.

My experience with the flight was okay. My experience checking in was absolutely terrible. I was told I needed to change my e-ticket number to check in because I missed my flight in PDX. Even when shown the itinerary, they didn't budge and sent me to KLM across the airport. KLM wasn't open until 8pm and my flight was at 7:30pm. Nobody made accommodations in any way to get me to KUL. To add insult to injury, they rescheduled my flight to the very next day, creating a very long layover and did not offer any hotel stay. After this, even worse, I found out later they delayed the first 7:30pm flight to 9:10pm. Meaning, I could have still boarded but they refused to even try to get me on the plane. As a result, I missed a day of work and lost pay for the day. Also, when I went to get my luggage, it wasn't there. It was STILL in Singapore. They had from 5:30pm to 5am to get my luggage onto the plane and they still couldn't get that right. This is the worst experience I've had flying anywhere in the past decade I've been travelling.

The flight attendants were not passing out soft drinks. They skipped a lot of rows and passengers were complaining.

Leg room is just too short and food costs and is not good quality. But the big issue was they said that my luggage would be transferred to the next flight, so no need for me to exit customs, get a visa and reboard. However that didn't happen and my luggage is still, 2 days later, in Denpasar. So whilst the flight went on time and was fairly average, I think that the cost vs quality is not good enough.

Second time flying on AirAsia. They’re fine for a low cost carrier, so I don’t expect high level hospitality. They could have informed us that the flight would be delayed even if by a few minutes, instead of the passengers asking the gate agents why we’re not boarding 8 minutes before takeoff. We had 2 attempts to land at Singapore Changing during a thunderstorm. Everything was delayed by 1 hour plus.

Boarding was not accordingly after front seat, bmf then back seat. This delayed for at least 40mins or more. The staff at Jakarta can do better. Is chaos at the entry to board the plane. This tarnished Scoot reputation when everyone was talking about it.

The crew was not customer oriented at all, even confrontational . The aircraft needs more attention to detail as far as comfort, and the 1 hour sitting at the gate with no air is inexcusable

Scoot refused to change my flight even though I had booked a flexible ticket. MyTrip wanted to charge me an extra $271 for a ticket that was only listed as $217. I complained about this to scoot and they didn't give a shite. So never again will you be getting money from me Scoot. You can Scoot off.

They got to the terminal late, with no one on the arriving flight, boarded us late, and left us sitting there for 2 hours before they got us off the ground. They knew they were going to be late, yet they never got an updated flight plan from their head office until long after the flight was supposed to leave. They could have cut the delay in half, of at least let us stay in the terminal. Really just horrible planning.

The worst kind of budget airline. To be honest....the plane was not that bad. Would have been good to have some food choices and some water. What was by far the worse is the passengers/customers that this airline attracts. Coughing and spluttering all over one another with no masks. Just disgusting. Pay for a better carrier and get a better class of passenger.

Travel From Kuala Lumpur to Singapore by Bus or Train

Kuala Lumpur is a great option for a family holiday. It’s relatively cheap and there is loads of cool stuff to see and do. Singapore is another awesome destination, and it’s just 350 km away. But is it best to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore by bus or train?

Is It Best To Travel From Kuala Lumpur to Singapore by Bus or Train?

On our holiday we decided to spend one week in Kuala Lumpur , then travel to Singapore and spend our second week there. Travelling between the two destinations presented heaps of different travel options. The three conventional modes of transport are train, bus or fly. And all 3 options have some definite pro’s and con’s.

Catching a Train From Kuala Lumpur to Singapore

I really wanted to try the train because it sounds like such an interesting journey. I love long train trips, they’re so relaxing. And let’s face it, trains are normally more spacious than buses, making it much easier to stand up and have a stretch.

I found the train trip from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore quite difficult to research, mainly due to changing countries midway though the journey. And the fact that the Malaysian side is not well translated into English online. In fact it’s hard just to figure out which train stations are along the route

After loads of research I discovered that a train journey actually meant catching a minimum of 4 trains to get from our Kuala Lumpur hotel to Singapore. That meant unloading our heavy baggage 4 times.

Also finding our directions in 4 different train stations looked like being a massive headache, especially with a child in tow. We had already tackled Kuala Lumpur metro train stations, and learnt that they are notoriously difficult to navigate.

Catching a train from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore? No way! Although an interesting option, it is just too difficult to contemplate with heavy baggage and kids. The Kuala Lumpur to Singapore bus fare is roughly the same as the train fare, but with much less hassles.

Fly from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore

Skyscanner is our favourite site for searching for cheap flights. Flights are ridiculously cheap for this particular journey, and all the budget carriers seem to offer flights. I’ve seen flights for as low as A$23 per person one way, in fact this is very common. Add a further $15 for 20kg of check-in baggage, and it comes to a modest $38 per person!

Catching a Bus from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore

A bus from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore did not sound very enticing to us. That’s because we have been on some very uncomfortable bus trips over the years. Let’s face it, a bus is not the first thought that comes to mind if you’re looking for a comfortable mode of transport. But a bus is well worth considering for this particular journey!

We used BusOnlineTicket.com to book our ticket, which cost S$20, or about A$19. These buses are seriously comfortable. They are so well equipped they feel more like a first class plane seat, complete with large recliner chairs and in-built entertainment systems.

Total cost to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore by bus:

Fly Versus Drive Comparison

The cost of catching a bus is about half the price of flying when you factor in taxis. A$82 versus A$169.

The time required to catch a bus is about 2 hours more, 7 hours versus 5 hours.

So is it worth the cost saving to catch the bus? Our recommendation is a resounding yes. The bus trip proved to be a comfortable option from start to finish. The bus terminal at both ends were well located, comfortable and convenient. Bus terminals both come with restaurants, ATM’s and convenience stores nearby. And the bus seats were clean, lovely and spacious.

The selection of on-board movies was good, and there was even on-board wi-fi. The road is high-speed freeway all the way and is quite safe. Overall it was a much better experience than a budget flight. The only negative aspect the journey was the Singapore immigration.

Malaysia Immigration Stop

About half way along the route you have to get off the bus to go through Malaysia Immigration. This is a fast and simple procedure, in about 10 minutes you should be back on the bus and on the road again.

You know you’ve reached the bridge to Singapore Island when you hit the traffic jam. It took the bus about 1 hour to traverse the final kilometer. Not that it’s uncomfortable waiting on the bus, it’s just that traffic jams are at rock bottom of our list of favourite things to do.

Then when you finally get to the customs and immigration building you have to get off the bus and line up for another half hour or so to clear customs counters. It was an overall unpleasant experience for us, however I feel the average traveller would not be as negative.

How to Book a Bus from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore

Here are some easy step by step instructions on how to do the entire journey by bus.

• Go to BusOnlineTicket.com and purchase your online bus ticket Kuala Lumpur to Singapore. It’s similar to booking a flight, there are many buses to choose from. The bus company we used is called Transtar Travel. We highly recommend Transtar as safe and clean operator.
• Although you can get picked up at the hotel, I recommend catching a taxi to the bus terminal. The Transtar Travel bus terminal is located just around the corner from the popular Berjaya Square. I recommend travelling to the terminal (starting point for the bus) to remove any possibility of confusion.There are countless similar looking buses operating in Kualar Lumpur . How do you recognise which one is the one you’re supposed to get on? It’s much better if you go to the terminal, where they have a comfortable waiting room with coffee and TV. Taxis are very cheap in KL so it shouldn’t cost much to get to the bus terminal.
• Grab your drinks and snacks from the convenience store right next to the Bus Terminal for your journey.
• Sit back and relax on the bus. Watch a couple of movies.
• When you get to Singapore, everybody gets off at the same bus terminal. It has a taxi rank, convenience stores, restaurants, ATM’s and money changers. Like most transport infrastructure in Singapore it’s supremely well organised.
• Catch a taxi to your hotel. Taxis are surprisingly cheap in Singapore, you will most likely only have to pay $10-$15 if your hotel is centrally located.

Review of the Kuala Lumpur to Singapore Bus

We are glad we caught the Kuala Lumpur to Singapore bus. Airports tend to be fairly bland experiences, and don’t really add much to the holiday experience. The bus trip was comfortable and entertaining, and we got to observe the changing scenery along the way.

We didn’t feel at all exhausted from the journey, and were quite happy to have saved a few dollars along the way. I would happily do this bus trip again and I do recommend you give it a try.

Should You Take the Kuala Lumpur to Singapore Bus?

Two of the best cities in Southeast Asia in my opinion, both Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are must-see destinations if you’re visiting this region, as both have so much to offer in terms of culture, food and attractions.

And the best thing? These 2 destinations are actually pretty close together, which means it’s very easy to travel between them too.

Distance between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur

If you weren’t in the know already, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur (or KL as it is known) are actually pretty close together.

Both situated on the same geographical peninsular (because KL is located in the south of Malaysia and Singapore is a tiny country / city rolled into one), it’s actually pretty amazing how near each other these 2 cities are.

Indeed KL and Singapore are situated just over 35km apart from each other – a distance that can be covered by land in around 4 hours!

That’s pretty amazing for Southeast Asi, a fairly large region where cities are often spread far apart.

Indeed it takes longer to get from the capital KL to many other destinations in Malaysia than it does get to Singapore!

But I digress, because it’s travel between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur that this article focuses on, so if you’re making this journey independently, as I did, here’s the full lowdown on how to get between these 2 cities using bus, train, plane or tour.

Armed with all the info, you can then make your choice about which method suits you best….

So the first way to travel between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur is by bus.

This is by far the most popular method and it’s the method I used too, which is why I’m including it first on this list.

Cheapest and among the quickest options, bus travel between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur also gives you flexibility, as there’s a ton of different services leaving every day and from different parts of the city.

The easiest place to pick up a bus leaving Singapore from Kuala Lumpur is from the Golden Mile Complex – this is the centralised main bus station and will certainly be the easiest to grab a departing bus from with the largest range of options.

Either you can walk there and buy a ticket in person from one of the many bus companies, or you can save yourself the time of this errand and simply book online.

As always, I recommend the excellent website 12Go when it comes to booking this bus journey… in fact any journey across Southeast Asia!

12Go give you a huge range of journeys to choose from, including departure times and prices, so you can make the best selection for your travels.

To be honest, most journey times are fairly similar between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur so, if it was me, I would concentrate on the departure point (go for the Golden Mile Complex in Singapore), the departure time (what sort of time works with your travel plans) and finally your arrival point in Kuala Lumpur.

Kuala Lumpur is a huge city and although there are a few larger bus stations (with one in particular – known as Terminal Bersepadu Selatan, or TBS – servicing buses from destinations to the south to the capital, such as Singapore), many bus other services from Singapore will drop you off at a huge variation of destinations across the city.

Very often it’s worth checking these destinations on a map to see if these other drop-off destinations are nearer to your accommodation in Kuala Lumpur than TBS – they probably will be!

If they are, I recommend going for that service instead of one that takes to you TBS, because you’ll easily be able to use a rideshare service, like Grab , once you arrive in Kuala Lumpur to get to your accommodation.

And the shorter the distance of this journey, the better – you’ll see why when you experience the traffic in KL!

In essence therefore, you should base your choice of bus from the Golden Mile Complex in Singapore to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia largely on the time it departs and where it drops you off in KL.

Prices will be pretty standardised, and all the buses that run this route are reputable, comfortable and safe.. that’s just how it is in Singapore!

Prices start from around $35 USD and buses take around 5 hours – although this depends heavily on what the border crossing is like, which is impossible to predict!

Nevertheless, the bus remains a safe and easy option – as a solo female traveller, I found it a piece of cake!

#2 By Train

In general, I wouldn’t recommend getting the train between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, it takes ages and isn’t that straightforward.

Unless you specifically love getting trains, I’d avoid it, but I’ll give you a few details anyway in case it does tickle your fancy!

You actually need to change trains at Gemas when travelling from Singapore to KL, which means booking two tickets and adds even more hassle to the journey!

However, once you change at Gemas, you’ll then be on a high speed train to KL, which speeds up the journey and the quality of the ride significantly.

Journeys depart from Singapore’s Johor Bahru Central Station and arrive at Kuala Lumpur Central Station and tickets costs around $25 USD one way.

There are around 3-4 services daily by train between the 2 cities, but you can actually travel all the way to Bangkok from Singapore by train if you wish!

If you do wish, then I’d still break up the journey in KL, as well as further north in Malaysia in Penang if I were you, but there’s no doubt going all the way to Thailand using this method would be fun!

Once again, use 12Go to book this train journey.

#3 By Plane

And now we come to the quickest option of them all, or it so it seems.

Yes you can easily take a flight from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur in just 30 minutes.

However, when you factor in getting to the airport, check-in time, passing through security, luggage collection time, as well as disembarking etc, the reality is that this option might not be that much quicker than the bus!

And it certainly won’t be cheaper, with prices (even on budget airlines) starting from around $55 USD.

As always, it pays to book in advance with flights and to use a comparison website to get the best deal.

My go-to here is Skyscanner , because I always find they offer the best prices and options.

Have a look yourself, but do remember to consider your carbon footprint when booking a flight this short and perhaps book the cheaper bus instead!

And finally, the last option on this list, you can also take a multi-day tour in this part of Southeast Asia that includes the destinations of both Singapore and Kuala Lumpur and will shuttle you between the 2.

Travel Guide to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur

When to Visit?

Situated fairly close to each other, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur tend to have similar weather patterns, which thankfully makes it easy to visit both destinations in one trip!

Because this is not a given with other parts of Southeast Asia or even other parts of Malaysia!

In general, the best time to visit both these destinations is between December and April, with February and March being the optimum months.

This is when it is driest and coolest in both destinations.

Trust me, in cities like Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, this is a godsend!

How Long to Spend There?

It might sound strange, but while most travellers donate more time to Singapore, I loved KL just as much and found there was so much to do there I couldn’t fit it all in!

As such, I recommend a minimum of 3 nights for both cities, making your trip to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore a total of 6 days.

Of course, you could easily spend longer in both these cities, but this would have to be balanced against other destinations you might want to visit in the region.

In particular, Malaysia offers an amazing range of travel experiences you can’t miss!

Where to Stay?

If you’re a budget traveller like me, then the best place to stay in Kuala Lumpur is definitely Birdnest .

I totally loved this homely backpackers, which had a great location and friendly staff.

When it comes to Singapore, there’s no question in my mind, you really should stay at Beary Bear Singapore – the best budget accommodation deal in this expensive city by miles!

Otherwise, if you want something a bit more private, then check out Oakwood Premier in Singapore, it manages to balance affordability (in this country) with good amenities.

In Kuala Lumpur, you’ve got a much bigger range of decent hotels for a  decent price, but my pick of the bunch is definitely the EQ Kuala Lumpur .

What to Pack?

Here’s my top 5 items I recommend taking to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore…

#1 Good Day Pack – A great idea for day trips and sightseeing adventures, a good day pack will help you carry all you need (including snacks, water, camera etc) and keep the weight distributed equally across your shoulders. This one from Osprey is fantastic.

#2 Walking Shoes – There’s likely to be a lot of walking in these 2 cities, especially around all those attractions! As such, I advise packing a pair of good runners, like these New Balance trainers , which were perfect for my time here.

#3 European & British Power Adapters – Malaysia has a mix of power outlets, but generally opts for a mix of the European and British ones, so make sure you come prepared with a world adapter .  

#4 Camera and Lens – I love my Sony A6000 mirrorless , which was ideal for capturing the colour, chaos and cuisine and charm of Southeast Asia.

#5 Rain jacket – It’s so humid in both these cities that it can rain at any time of the year. Go prepared with a light thin, compact waterproof jacket that is perfect for travel and those sudden downpours!

Continuing on Your from Singapore or Kuala Lumpur?

From Singapore, you can then catch a flight to just about anywhere, which is pretty much what you’ll need to do unless you plan to head north through the Malaysia Peninsular.

Changi Airport in Singapore is a huge international hub, so you have loads of flight options, but those to other Southeast Asian destinations are usually the most affordable including Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia.

Flights to Australia and New Zealand, as well as Hong Kong and India, are also common from Singapore.

From Kuala Lumpur, you can again either fly to a huge range of international (and national) destinations, or you can continue to head overland up through the Malaysian Peninsular, visiting other spots in this amazing country, before carrying on to Thailand if you wish.

The bustling sovereign city-state of Singapore lies just off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. Vibrant, colorful, unique, and full of tourist attractions, Singapore is definitely a destination for your bucket list and so to is Malaysia’s capital city, Kuala Lumpur. Roughly 355 kilometers (222 miles) to the north of Singapore, Kuala Lumpur is similar in many ways… a vibrant city that mixes the most modern high-rise skyscrapers with colonial British architecture and religious temples; perhaps this is why so many people choose to travel from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur!

Travel Options from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur

Singapore may be an island, but it lies less than 1 kilometer (approximately half a mile) off the coast of Southern Malaysia and is connected via a couple of bridges. This makes it extremely easy to travel between Singapore and Malaysia, and for travel north to Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur.

So, what are your options for getting from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur? Well, because of the bridges connecting Singapore to the peninsula, traveling by road is a very good option, and there are a number of bus companies that you can choose from for this trip. Travel by train used to be another good option but unfortunately the direct service was cancelled back in 2016 so now going by rail from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur is not so great as it involves a number of changes and a very long journey. This just leaves flying between the two cities. While it is expensive, there are close to 40 flights per day making this the most convenient and fastest way to get from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur.

Flights from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur

Catching a plane from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur is easily the quickest way to travel between these two popular destinations, with a flying time of just under an hour. Add in some time to get to and from the airport at either end and you could still be in Kuala Lumpur in time for lunch! This makes a flight from Singapore ideal for even the shortest of visits to KL, great if you’re pushed for time on your vacation.

There are so many flights to choose from with ten different airlines flying this route. Most of these fly to Kuala Lumpur International – the largest and busiest airport in Malaysia, while some also fly to Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, aka Subang Airport, and there are around 40 flights per day between these two cities. You should definitely shop around for the best prices as airfares can vary substantially, ranging from affordable to downright expensive! Firefly, for example, is one of the airlines who fly to Subang Airport and their prices are at the reasonable end. If you’re buying in advance and don’t mind flying at a slightly less sociable hour you can also get reasonably priced flights to Kuala Lumpur International as well, while flying within a few days and at a desirable time of day will set you back hundreds of dollars with the likes of Singapore Airlines or Malaysia Airlines.

By Bus from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur

While you can get reasonably priced flights from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, the cost can still be on the high side for anyone trying to travel on a budget. That’s where buses come in! A bus from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur should take somewhere between 5 and 6 hours so you’re losing time by traveling this way, but, the cost is significantly cheaper.

There are numerous different bus companies you can choose from, and if you’ve ever traveled by bus in Asia you’ll know that the quality of the buses can vary from company to company, as does the price. If you prefer a little more comfort and luxury then there are four companies you could look into who operate buses from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, and these are: Five Stars Express, Grasslands Express, StarMart Express, and Konsortium Express. These companies will take you the entire journey which includes crossing the border into Malaysia right at the start of your trip. The border crossing is quite painless though, and mostly handled by the bus staff so you’ll be told and shown what you need to do. Depending on how busy the crossing is, this can add some time to your journey, however, even with a longer crossing included, the total journey time should not exceed 6 hours.

A few words of advice for anyone traveling on a budget. The bus companies mentioned above are great at what they do, but, when you get a ticket starting from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur which includes the crossing into Malaysia you’re going to end up paying more for your seat. If you’d like to save as much money as possible another option is to cross into Malaysia independently. This may add a little extra time to your journey but can save you quite a few dollars. Do this by catching a local bus in Singapore, from the Queen Street Bus Station. This will take you across the Causeway bridge to Malaysia. Cross into Malaysia then buy a bus ticket to Kuala Lumpur from the Larkin Station.

Singapore to Kuala Lumpur by Train

Although there’s no direct train from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, we thought we’d include a brief paragraph about trains anyway as there are still ways to travel by train between the two cities. The journey will now involve three different trains so this is by no means a fast or convenient way of traveling. The total trip should take around nine hours, however, this is easily the cheapest way to travel from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur!

The first train is from Woodland checkpoint in Singapore to the Johor Bahru Sentral in Malaysia. Then take a shuttle train from here to Gemas – about 4 hours and 20 minutes. Finally, there’s a high-speed ETS train from Gemas to Kuala Lumpur – 2 hours and 20 minutes. But you will need to add waiting times into the equation which takes the total journey time up to about 9 hours.

The bus from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur usually takes around six hours in total which includes the seamless transfer across the border at Johor Bahru. It's approximately 40 minutes to the border from Singapore and around a five hour ride to Kuala Lumpur.

Flying is also the most expensive option but if you need to get to KL in a hurry then it's the only way to travel. Planes are modern and comfortable. Most will include the chance to buy food and drinks although you'll need to tuck in quickly before you land.

Crossing the border from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur

Crossing the border from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur takes you over the Johor Causeway. This is the rail and road connection between the two countries. 

There are different checkpoints on each side for bus/car and train users - Johor Bahru is the checkpoint in Malaysia and Woodlands is the checkpoint in Singapore. 1. Travel by Plane — the Most-Chosen Way

Flying seems to be the fastest way to get to Kuala Lumpur from Singapore, though if you're staying close to the Malaysia border in Singapore, a car journey may actually be faster. Once getting to/from the airport, check-in, immigration, baggage claim, and waiting time are considered, the total journey may be anything from 4½ to 6½ hours, depending on your start and finish points.

There are plenty of flights each day with a duration of about 1 hour . Flights depart from Singapore Changi Airport and arrive at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. There are many airlines operating them, including JetStar Asia, Singapore Airlines, Air Asia, Scoot, Malindo Air, Malaysia Airlines, Silk Air, and Firefly. You may get a cheap flight ticket for as little as USD$40.

2.Travel by Bus — the Cheapest Way

Travel by bus from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur is a possibly-more-convenient and inexpensive alternative to a flight. It takes about 5–6 hours by bus and it is the most recommended way to travel for the following reasons:

• Best price : one way costs about USD$11–35 per ticket.
• Kuala Lumpur city center arrival (instead of 40 km away at the airport)
• Good travel experience : Buses are equipped with air-conditioning and comfortable adjustable seats, which are wide and comfortable. Some companies also offer TVs in the compartments and wireless Internet access. Luxury bus companies even provide snacks, meals, and drinks on the bus.
• Many choices : There are many bus companies operating a variety of schedules, such as StarMart Express, Transfer Travel, Seasons Express, Sri Maju Group, The One Travel, and Grassland Express.

Price tips:

• There is a price difference depending on the bus's facilities and comfort level.
• Some cheap bus companies will not choose the most efficient route (to pick up more passengers) and will take about one hour more for the trip.

Although each long-distance company has different departure and arrival points, but most of the buses depart from Golden Mile Complex in Singapore and terminate at Terminal Bersepadu Selatan in central Kuala Lumpur.

Procedure for Crossing the Singapore-Malaysia Border

Compared with air travel, the procedure for crossing the border overland is a little different and more complicated. Generally, buses from Singapore to Malaysia go to Singapore's Tuas Checkpoint for exit inspection, and then go to the Malaysian checkpoint in Gelang Patah for entry inspection. When arriving at the border:

• Get off the bus with the necessary documents (passport, visa), but you can leave luggage in the bus.
• Process through Singapore's Tuas Checkpoint for the exit stamp in your passport.
• Get onto the bus again, cross the bridge over the Johor Strait, and after 10–15 minutes you'll reach the Malaysia border control area.
• Get off the bus with all your belongings this time, pass through Malaysian customs and get your entry stamp for Malaysia. You will be screened before entering.
• For a quick crossing, please prepare your exit card in advance.
• Please prepare your entry card and complete it in advance before going through Malaysian Immigration.
• Declare whatever you bring that might cause some problems such as alcohol and cigarettes.
• Please note that it may take about 1 hour for you to cross the border if it is not crowded, but the whole procedure might be delayed and you may have to wait for hours in line if it is crowded.

3. Travel by Train — the Train Travel Lovers Option

Going to Kualu Lumpur by train is another option for train travel lovers, but unfortunately, there is no direct train available between Singapore and KL . If you want to go by train, you have to change train twice! The total cost of the train tickets is from USD$16 for a one-way trip, and it takes about 8–9 hours including the waiting and train changes time.

• Firstly , you can take a train from Singapore Woodlands Train Station to JB Sentral (Johor Bahru Central) in Malaysia, which takes about 5 minutes, USD$4 per ticket
• Then , take train from JB Sentral to Gemas Station, which takes about 4½ hours and is USD$5 per ticket.
• Lastly , take a train from Gemas Station to KL Sentral (Kuala Lumpur Central) which takes about 2½ hours and USD$7 per ticket
• Scan your passport at the gate checkpoint to enter Woodlands Train Station.
• Clear Singapore Immigration.
• Go through Malaysian Customs and Immigration.
• Board the train.
• Please arrive at the train station at least 30 minutes before departure for checking in and passing immigration.
• The platform gate will close 10 minutes before departure.
• There are more than 30 trains per day between Woodlands and Johor Bahru Sentral, but train ticket booking is always tight. Tickets can be booked from about 30 days before departure.
• You can buy tickets at Woodlands CIQ ticket window or book a ticket online at https://www.ktmb.com.my/ . Trains are operated by Malaysia's KTMB train company.
• If you book a ticket online, you have to get a paper ticket printed out at Woodlands CIQ ticket window (using your booking details).
• Trains from Woodlands to Johor Bahru are shuttle trains. Trains from JB to Gemas are normal trains and most of them offer only First Class seats. Trains from Gemas to Kuala Lumpur are high-speed trains with only First Class seats.

4. Travel by Private Car — the Most Convenient Way

Compared with public transportation, and even flights, with the stress of carrying your luggage on and off, waiting for entry/exit checks, etc., a 4-hour private transfer from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur is the most comfortable and convenient way to get there.

It is a door-to-door service , and your private driver will meet you at your hotel lobby or any place in Singapore. It is flexible and you can leave at any time. What is more, it is absolutely hassle-free! When you cross the border, you do not need to get out of the car to clear immigration. 5. Travel by Taxi — Vehicle Change Needed

You cannot take a taxi from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, but it is easy for you to take one to Johor Bahru, the nearest Malaysian city to Singapore . There are three kinds taxies: fixed-point taxis, Johor Bahru non-fixed-point taxis, and Singapore non-fixed-point taxis

• Fixed-point taxis can only carry passengers between Singapore Wanshan Street Taxi Terminal (next to Queen Street Bus Terminal, a 10-minute walk from Bugis MRT Station) and Johor Bahru Larkin Station.
• Johor Bahru non-fixed-point taxis can carry passengers from any place in JB to Singapore Wanshan Street Taxi Terminal.
• Singapore non-fixed-point taxis can carry passengers from anywhere in Singapore to Johor Bahru Larkin Station.

The price is about USD$36 per taxi.

You can clear customs quickly as you do not need to get out of the taxi for immigration clearance.

From Johor Bahru Larkin Station, you could continue your journey to Kuala Lumpur in another taxi or take a bus/train. A taxi would take another 4 hours or so and costs around US$150–200, depending on traffic.

6. Travel by Ferry — the Desaru Beach Option

A ferry service is also available between Singapore and Johor Bahru, Malaysia, which is from Changi Ferry Terminal to Tanjung Belungkor at JB.

People who want to go to the Desaru beach area in Malaysia always choose the ferry trip. However, it is an out-of-the-way option if you want to travel on to KL. A Desaru–KL taxi takes from 4 hours 15 minutes and costs around US$160–220 depending on traffic. You might choose to stay at Desaru before continuing your journey.

After arriving in Tanjung Belungkor, you can take a bus to Desaru. There is only one ferry trip in the morning (10:30) and one in the evening (18:30) during work days, and there are more ferries scheduled for weekends and public holidays. The ferry can carry about 12 passengers a time. It is about a 45-minute ferry trip and the price of a crossing is about USD$20 per person. The ferry is operated by Desaru Fruit Farm Tour and Travel company.

Please prepare your valid passport, visa, and ferry ticket to pass immigration at the ports.
