Another record-breaking year ahead for the Ladies European Tour

let european tour 2023 tournament

LET 2023 schedule: 30 global tournaments in 21 different countries with a €35 million record-breaking total prize fund. Plus it's Solheim Cup year!

The Ladies European Tour will continue to expand women’s golf globally in 2023 and its players will compete for at least €35 million, a record-breaking total prize fund. The LET has announced that the 2023 schedule will comprise 30 official events, along with the Solheim Cup in Europe.

“Thanks to our partners, promoters, host venues and fans, 2023 is going to be an incredibly exciting year for the LET,” said CEO Alexandra Armas.

“This year’s Race to Costa del Sol showcased the outstanding skill of our players and there will be even higher profile opportunities for our role models to shine next year, with more total prize money than at any time in our history. The LET has grown rapidly over the last three years and we have been oversubscribed for our recent Q-School, demonstrating the record level of interest. The LET now presents a platform for women to build a successful career and achieve their dreams in professional golf. We will continue to work hard to elevate the sport in Europe and around the world.”

2023 kick starts in Kenya

The 2023 global schedule will take the LET to 21 different countries, starting with the Magical Kenya Ladies Open, which will be played for the third time over the Baobab Course at Vipingo Ridge in Kenya in the first week of February.

The LET then returns to Morocco for the first time since 2019 for the Lalla Meryem Cup, which will be played over the Blue Course at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam at the same time as the PGA TOUR Champions contests the Trophy Hassan II over the venue’s Red Course.

The Aramco Saudi Ladies International presented by Public Investment Fund (PIF) will feature its strongest-ever field at Royal Greens Golf and Country Club, including 60 LET players and 50 players from within the top 300 of the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings, after the tournament announced its commitment to women’s golf by elevating the prize fund to $5million.

South Africa will host two events in March, the Joburg Ladies Open at Modderfontein Golf Club and the Investec South African Women’s Open at Steenberg Golf Club in Cape Town.

The first of five $1 million Aramco Team Series events will then take place in Singapore, followed by two more events in Asia.

The LET will return to Europe in May for the Jabra Ladies Open at the world-famous Evian Resort Golf Club in France, followed by the second Aramco Team Series event at Trump International Golf Club West Palm Beach, Florida.

Helsingborg Open returns to the schedule

After a successful launch in 2022, the Mithra Belgian Ladies Open will be played again at Naxhelet Golf Club. Then, in June, the Helsingborg Open will return to the schedule for the first time since 2015 and will be played at Allerum Golf Club.

Remaining in Sweden, the LET will move on to Ullna Golf Club for the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed, where the players will attempt to follow in the footsteps of Linn Grant , who earlier this year became the first woman to win a DP World Tour event with a nine-shot victory over a mixed gender field in the co-sanctioned tournament.

From there, the LET will move on to Berlin for the Amundi German Masters at Seddiner See Golf Club, followed by the Tipsport Czech Ladies Open at Beroun Golf Club and then the Ladies Open by Pickala, at Pickala Golf in Helsinki, Finland.

In mid-July, the third Aramco Team Series event will be played once again at Centurion Club near London.

In the third week of July, the €1 million La Sella Open will debut on the calendar at La Sella Golf in Alicante, Spain.

Four co-sanctioned events with the LPGA across the summer

In July and August, the Tour will play in four co-sanctioned tournaments with the LPGA, opening in France with the $6.5 million Amundi Evian Championship, the first Major on the LET schedule, followed by the $2 million Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open, the $7.3 million AIG Women’s Open, the second Major Championship in Europe, to be played at Walton Heath in England and finally the $1.5 million ISPS Handa World Invitational presented by AVIV Clinics, in Northern Ireland, before returning to Dromoland Castle in Ireland for the second KPMG Women’s Irish Open.

Early September will see Hilversumsche Golf Club in the Netherlands host the Big Green Egg Open and then the VP Bank Swiss Ladies Open will be played once again at the picturesque Golfpark Holzhausern.

On September 22-24, the Solheim Cup, featuring the 12 best players from the United States versus the 12 best European players, will be held at the stunning Finca Cortesin in Andalucia, Spain, where Team Europe is going for the hat-trick. Golf fans are readying themselves for what will be a truly unmissable event.

The Lacoste Ladies Open de France will then return to Golf Barriere in Deauville, ahead of the fourth Aramco Team Series event in Hong Kong in October.

The Hero Women’s Indian Open at DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurgaon will precede the fifth Aramco Team Series event, in Riyadh, at the beginning of November.

Finally, the 2023 season will culminate with the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España at Real Club de Golf Las Brisas, Marbella, where the winner of the Race to Costa del Sol will be crowned.

Kenya Ladies Open 2023 golf: India’s Aditi Ashok wins her fourth LET title

Aditi Ashok dominated in Kenya by carding a 12-under. The Indian golfer last won a Ladies European Tour golf tournament in 2017.

Aditi Ashok

India’s Aditi Ashok won her fourth Ladies European Tour title at the Kenya Ladies Open 2023 golf tournament at Vipingo Ridge, Kenya on Sunday.

Aditi Ashok carded a 12-under (67-70-69-74) to win the contest ahead of England’s Alice Hewson and Thailand’s April Angurasaranee, who finished with identical final scores of 3-under.

Aditi Ashok had a six-stroke lead over second-placed Angurasaranee heading into the fourth and final day of the golf tournament. However, Angurasaranee hit a double-bogey and three bogeys on the back nine to finish joint-second with Alice Hewson.

The 24-year-old Aditi Ashok, meanwhile, was consistent throughout the four rounds. She made a brilliant start to the Kenya Ladies Open golf tournament scoring 6-under 67 in the first round, which included an eagle and five birdies and remained in the lead throughout.

The Indian golfer cemented her position on the top of the leaderboard after a bogey-free third round on Saturday and on Sunday, Aditi Ashok comfortably clinched the title despite hitting two bogeys on the back nine.

India’s Avani Prashanth, meanwhile, finished tied-ninth with a score of 3-over (75-75-73-72) and Amandeep Drall came tied-52nd with a 16-over (74-74-83-77).

While the Kenya Ladies Open was the fourth title for Aditi Ashok on the Ladies European Tour, it was her first since winning the 2017 Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Open in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Aditi Ashok turned pro in 2016 and also represented India at Rio 2016 Olympics. In the same year, Aditi Ashok won the Women’s India Open to become the first Indian to win a LET golf title. She also clinched the Qatar Open that year.

In 2021, Aditi Ashok narrowly missed out on becoming the first Indian golfer to win an Olympic medal after finishing fourth at Tokyo 2020.

The women's golf revolution: an in-depth look at the ladies european tour.

  • 02 May, 2023
  • 10 min read

Ladies European Tour is the most prestigious professional women’s golf tour in Europe. Founded in 1978, LET provides female golfers opportunities to showcase their talent by competing at global level.

Let's Get Started

The Women's Golf Revolution: An In-Depth Look at the Ladies European Tour

The Ladies European Tour plays a significant role in promoting women’s professional golf across Europe, inspiring female golfers at all levels of the game. The Tour's founding members battled against the odds to increase opportunities for women in golf when resources were limited, and many believed it should only remain an amateur pursuit . Today LET is bigger than ever and the 45th season of the Tour is in full swing. This season is bigger than any other, and calls for us to remember all those women who worked hard to make it successful.

So let's dive into the history of the prestigious women's golf tour to celebrate the incredible achievements of the pioneering founders, iconic players, and dedicated officials who have made the LET one of the most successful and respected professional golf tours in the world.

What Is Ladies European Tour?

The Ladies European Tour (LET) is a global golf tour operated by Ladies European Golf Venture Limited. This private limited company was founded in England in 1978 with an aim to give young girls and women an opportunity to showcase their golfing skills and pursue a career in the game they are passionate about.

Today LET boasts a diverse and multicultural membership of 316 professional female golfers representing 36 countries, mostly European. The Tour operates tournaments across five continents, and most of the money generated by the games go to its members in the form of prize money.

How Was the Ladies European Tour Founded?

How Was the Ladies European Tour Founded?

Golf is an incredibly popular sport amongst European women, but there was a time when no attempts were made to promote the game amongst them. Professional women's golf was not a thing in Europe until 1978 when the Professional Golfers' Association of Great Britain and Ireland set up the Women's Professional Golfer's Association .

A year later, in 1979, the Women's Professional Golf Association, in sponsorship with Carlsberg and others, established a tour comprising 12 golf tournaments. Each of these tournaments was to be played over 36 holes. The WPGA also planned several other golf tournaments exclusively for women, including the Women's British Opens- a major championship in women's golf today.

The first two tours, held in 1979 and 1980, were played over 36 holes, and both seasons were a hit. So in 1981, it was decided that the tournaments would be played over 54 holes. The prize money was also increased from £80,000 in the inaugural season to £250,000 in 1981, but things didn't go as planned. Many of the Tour's sponsors backed out, leading to several lost tournaments and pro-amps. At the end of the third season in 1981, the Tour's most prominent sponsor, Carlsberg, also withdrew the sponsorship and left the WPGA in deep water.

The fourth season of the ladies tour was held in 1982, but it didn't do well due to the lack of resources and sponsors. Many events were cancelled, and the circuit was left with ten tournaments from which only a few female golfers could make money. WPGA had started strong, but by the end of the fourth tour, the association's future began to look dark.

Despite all the struggles, the WPGA continued to strive to provide European female golfers with more opportunities on the professional level. Its biggest breakthrough came in 1986 when LPGA officially recognized WPGA . This meant that the WPGT members were allowed to compete in LPGA events for greater exposure and the opportunity to earn more prize money.

In 1988, the Women's Professional Golfers' European Tour (WPGT) members disassociated from the Professional Golfer's Association of Great Britain and Ireland. And so, an independent company named the Women Professional Golfers' European Tour Limited was formed to give the Tour more autonomy and control over its affairs. With financial and administrative support from the International Management Group (IMG), Women Professional Golfers' European Tour Limited moved away from the PGA's headquarters and established its new headquarters at the Tytherington Club in Cheshire.

Becoming an independent company was a key moment in the Tour's history as it helped them shape their future for the better. In the 1990s, the Tour continued to work for the interest of professional female golfers, expanding its schedule and adding events in countries such as Italy, Denmark, and Germany. In 1998, the Tour changed its name again before finally settling with Ladies European Tour Limited in July 2000. In the early 2000s,  the Ladies European Tour struggled to find sponsors again, but just like the last time, it stabilised again.

Today, the Ladies European Tour is an incredibly important part of the women's professional golf landscape. Every year tournaments are held across five continents and broadcast live to inspire young girls worldwide.

Founding Members Of Ladies European Tour:

A Image of Founding Members Of Ladies European Tour:

When LET was founded in 1978, several strong-willed women played a crucial role in helping it get through the initial struggling years and grow into the most prestigious Tour in the golf world.Catherine Rita Panton-Lewis and Vivien Saunders are two of the most recognised golfers who contributed to improving women's golf.

Catherine Rita Panton-Lewis Catherine Rita Panton is a professional golfer from Scotland who worked tirelessly for the growth of women’s professional golf. She was one of founding members of the Ladies European Tour and also topped the tour’s first Order Of Merit. Catherine’s golfing skills and popularity helped her score sponsorships to keep the tour flourishing.

Vivien Saunders: Saunders is a retired professional golfer from England who was the driving force behind the Women's Professional Golf Association and Ladies European Tour formation. Sunders always believed that female golfers need representation at a professional level and worked closely with other women in the golf community to develop a plan for the Tour and secure support from potential sponsors .

How To Qualify For the Ladies European Tour?

How To Qualify For the Ladies European Tour

To qualify for the Ladies European Tour (LET), women golfers must meet the eligibility criteria set by the LET.

The LET has two main categories for eligibility:

  • LET Membership Category:

To become a member of the LET, players must either:

Finish high enough on LET's "tour school" series of qualifying tournaments , held annually. Or finish in the top 80 of the LET Order of Merit (money list) at the end of the previous season.

Another way is to play on the developmental Tour known as the Ladies European Tour Access Series (LETAS). LETAS is conducted yearly, and the top five on the LETAS money list automatically qualify for the upcoming Ladies European Tour.

  • Tournament Invitations:

Players who do not meet the above criteria can still participate in LET tournaments if they receive a tournament invitation from the LET or the tournament organiser. These invitations are typically extended to players who have succeeded in other golf tours or events.

Ladies European Tour Winners

Every LET season, the participants can win Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards. The Player Of The Year award is granted to the Player who has performed the best throughout the season based on a points system. The Rookie Of The Year is given to the best-performing rookie on the Tour in a given season. A rookie is defined as a player who has not previously been a full-time member of the LET.

Here is the list of all the female golfers who have won these awards from 1999 to 2022.

Ladies European Tour Top Golfers & Record Holders

Since 1987, the Ladies European Tour has seen a lot of talented female golfers competing to win the titles and making a name for themselves in the magnificent game of golf. While all of the Ladies European Tour golf are reputable, some have inspired the world with their skills and determination to be the best.

Amongst the most popular Ladies European Tour golfers are:

Laura Davies :

Laura Davies is undoubtedly the most accomplished female golfer England has ever seen. She joined the Ladies European Tour in 1985 and set the record by winning LET 45 times. Laura is also the only non-American golfer who won 20 LPGA tours and finished at the top of the LPGA money list.

Dale Reid :

Second, to Laura Davies is Dale Reid- a Scottish female golf player known for having an incredible LET career. She played in the Ladies European Tour from 1979 to 2005 and had 21 tournament victories.

Marie-Laure de Lorenzi :

Marie is a French professional golf player who ranks 3rd on the list of Most LET wins. Marie has won 19 tours and is now a lifetime member of LET.

Patricia Marie Trish Johnson :

Trish has also won a total of 19 LET tours and shares the 3rd rank with Marie- Laure.

Annika Sorenstam :

Annika Sorenstam is a Swedish professional golfer famous for being undefeated. She's won 17 LET tours and 72 official LPGA tournaments, including ten majors. Today, in her early 50s, Annika is still competing and winning golf tournaments.

Ladies European Tour 2023 Schedule

The Ladies European Tour has come a long way since its humble beginning in 1978. The current CEO of LET, Alexandra Armas , recently announced the Tour's 45th season schedule. According to Alexandr,  the 45th season will comprise 30 official Ladies European Tour events. The players will be competing for a total of €35 million, which is the greatest prize fund for LET. The 2023 global schedule revealed that the tournaments will take place in 21 different countries, starting with the Magical Kenya Ladies Open and ending with Andalucia Costa Del Sol Open De Espana in Spain.

While announcing the tour schedule, Alexandra Armas talked about how excited she is for the 2023 tour and claimed that season 2023 will be bigger and better than all the previous ones. The season will run from February to November 2023, giving professional female golfers a chance to win the audience's hearts with their performance.

Conclusion:

The Ladies European Tour proves that anything is achievable with determination and hard work. If you are a golf enthusiast and want to make a name for yourself in the golfing world, never lose hope. If women in the 1980s could establish a prestigious tour, you can also achieve your goals and dreams.

What is the Ladies European Tour Money List?

LET money list is a ranking system that ranks the Ladies European Tour players according to the prize money they win throughout the season. The Player who earns the most prize money at the end of the season is ranked first on the money list, and so on. The money list is updated after each event, and players can track their position on the list throughout the season.

The money list is also called the merit list, as it helps determine who qualifies for various events and who earns status on the Tour for the following year.

What is LET Q School?

Ladies European Tour Qualifying School is an annual tournament that allows female golfers to earn a place on the Ladies European Tour (LET) for the following season. The LET Q school graduates of 2022 who have proven their skill and qualified for the Ladies European Tour 2023 include Polly Mack, Alexandra Försterling, Natasia Nadaud, Ana Belac, Trichat Cheenglab, Albane Valenzuela, Emma Spitz, Gabriela Ruffels, Kristen Rudgeley, Annabel Dimmock, Sophie Housmann, Emma Nilson, Tereza Melecka, Tiffany Arafi, Maiken Bing Paulsen, Amalie Leth Nissen, Paz Marfa Sans, Linnea Johansson, Aline Krauter, Madelene Stavnar, Lea-Anne Bramwell, Louise Duncan, Yuri Onishi, and Alessandra Fanali.

The top snooker players on the planet have convened in Sheffield for the start of the World Snooker Championship at The Crucible this weekend.

The first round will last several days, so it may be a while before your favourite steps up to the table, but there are plenty of terrific match-ups in store throughout the weekend and beyond.

Ding Junhui and Jack Lisowski have been drawn against one another in the opening round, while Judd Trump faces Hossein Vafaei and Mark Williams will take on last year's surprise package Si Jiahui.

  • Best snooker players in the world 2024 | Best snooker players of all time

Reigning champion Luca Brecel is not fancied to defend his title when the main tournament rolls around. It would be the most unlikely shock triumph since, well, Luca Brecel won the World Snooker Championship in 2023.

Trump and Ronnie O'Sullivan are the standout contenders to go all the way, while Williams's Tour Championship title win earlier this month will give him plenty of confidence to challenge in Sheffield.

G4D Tour announces expanded 2023 schedule

The G4D Tour (Golf for the Disabled Tour) today announces its 2023 global schedule, with an expanded calendar of eight tournaments in six countries.

Rasmus Lia and Juan Postigo

Launched in 2022 with an initial seven-event schedule, the G4D Tour sees the world’s leading golfers with a disability compete on the same course, the same week, as professionals on the DP World Tour.

The 2023 season will see additional uplifts to the G4D Tour, including the introduction of a season-long Order of Merit to crown the Number One player.

Each G4D Tour event is open to amateurs and professional players of all eligible impairments, men and women. For 2023, players will be able to qualify from both their ranking on the gross division of the World Ranking for Golfers with a Disability (WR4GD) and events on the European Disabled Golf Association (EDGA) Tour, ensuring an international pathway to reach the G4D Tour. The European Tour group pays the expenses of players as they travel around the world, to ensure that the Tour is open to all players regardless of their financial circumstances.

To be eligible, all players must have a World Ranking for Golfers with a Disability and an EDGA Player Pass. Since the G4D Tour launched earlier this year, applications for a World Ranking and Player Pass have reached record levels, with 20% of all passes secured in 2022 alone – showing the impact the G4D Tour is having on raising awareness and increasing participation. The DP World Tour will continue to utilise its social media channels, and relationships with global broadcasters, to showcase the G4D Tour on a range of media platforms throughout the 2023 season.

This year’s inaugural season, which had its finale at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, saw England’s Kipp Popert win four G4D Tour titles and regain his position as World Number One on the WR4GD. The other tournament winners were England’s Mike Browne, Italy’s Tommaso Perrino and Sweden’s Rasmus Lia. Players of ten different nationalities competed, showing the international reach of the Tour.

The Australian All Abilities Championship, starting on Friday December 2, will be the first event of the 2023 G4D Tour season, with World Number One Popert leading the field of 12 competitors teeing it up at Victoria Golf Club. The Australian All Abilities Championship forms part of a festival of golf on Australia’s world-renowned sandbelt, taking place concurrently with the ISPS HANDA Australian men’s and women’s Opens.

The tournament will be played across three rounds at Victoria Golf Club, with World Number Two Brendan Lawlor and Spaniard Juan Postigo Arce, ranked fourth on the WR4GD also competing. World Number 12 Geoff Nicholas leads the home charge, having made history in 2019 as the first amputee golfer to qualify for The Senior Open presented by Rolex at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

Speaking about the enhanced 2023 schedule Keith Pelley, Chief Executive of the European Tour group, said: “The G4D Tour has been a tremendous success since it launched earlier this year. We have seen unprecedented numbers of golfers with a disability enquire about playing on the Tour and getting a World Ranking, thanks to the ability for these inspirational players to play Tour level courses next to the best players on the DP World Tour.

“We have developed a very close relationship with EDGA and the European Tour group will continue to support the association in its focus on developing capacity within the golf industry, through a variety of education and development activities. I firmly believe that golf has the potential to be the most inclusive sport in the world and the G4D Tour is a major step in realising this ambition.”

Tony Bennett, President of EDGA, added: “The G4D Tour is the visible manifestation of EDGA’s development of golf for the disabled – a process that started 22 years ago. Since our first collaboration with the European Tour group and DP World Tour, there has been exponential growth at all levels. The G4D Tour has created greater awareness and resulted in a cascade effect with more tournaments at every level, more national federations building accessible activities, and of course, more grassroots programmes than ever before. The support that the European Tour group and DP World Tour provide to EDGA helps make all of this possible.”
