Carson City, the capital of Nevada , is on the far western side of the state, near the east shoreline of Lake Tahoe. It's been the capital since Nevada earned its statehood in 1864 and was the territorial capital before that. Before explorer John C. Fremont laid eyes on the land in the 1840s, the Washoe People occupied the region for thousands of years.

From the 1870s State Capitol to the old homes and storefronts lining the Kit Carson Trail, history is hard to miss when visiting. And several tourist attractions like museums, house tours, and heritage railroad lines make this history a participatory experience.

Carson City provides several modern attractions within its historical settings. It also offers access to the region's stunning natural environment. Places to visit like Lake Tahoe and Lake Washoe are less than a half-hour drive from the city center, and downtown offers several local restaurants and boutique stores to explore between adventures.

Find a new Nevada adventure with our list of the top things to do in Carson City.

Governor's Mansion, Kit Carson Trail

Carson City has been the state capital of Nevada since 1864 and was the territorial capital before that. This longstanding history is readily apparent upon walking the downtown streets and capitol grounds. Alongside the stately Capitol building itself, several aesthetic buildings throughout the area still stand from the 1800s.

The Kit Carson Trail is a 2.5-mile self-guided historic walking tour, highlighting much of the remaining 19th-century architecture. The sightseeing route zigzags from the Capitol Complex and throughout the adjacent West Side Historic District. Among the buildings along the route are the Governor's Mansion, century-old churches, and dozens of historic homes.

Historical house on the Kit Carson Trail

Nearly 50 landmarks comprise the Kit Carson Trail in total, making it one of the most extensive history walks in the state. Interpretive information on the edge of most properties details the historic statures of each building. These information placards help paint the picture of Carson City's early history.

The Kit Carson Trail is one of Carson City's best attractions. It's also an unavoidable part of almost any visit. Much of Carson City's appeal, including the Capitol Complex and downtown district, are on this historic path.

Nevada State Capitol

For those interested in state government or not, the Nevada State Capitol Complex is a beautiful space to walk around and enjoy the day. Tree-lined walkways navigate the complex, which includes other government buildings like the State Library and Supreme Court . And a large plaza and walkway at the center of campus offer a stately place to enjoy the day.

The State Capitol itself, constructed with native sandstone between 1870 and 1871, is the oldest building on campus. It's also one of the oldest capitol buildings west of the Mississippi River. Today, it's a signature building on the Kit Carson Trail and a still bustling center of government.

Battle Born Hall, Nevada State Capitol

Self-guided tours of the Capitol are available throughout the week. Alongside government chambers and stately artworks, the building is home to the Battle Born Hall on the second floor. This 2,000-square-foot museum showcases the Trailblazing Nevada exhibit, highlighting significant aspects in state history.

The State Capitol is open for walk-in visitors every day of the week, excluding major holidays, from 8am to 5pm. The Capitol and Battle Born Hall are free to visit.

Address: 101 N Carson Street, Carson City, Nevada

Downtown Carson City

The capital city has several unique shopping and dining opportunities. The busiest area of town is the historic district next to the Capitol Complex. Here, the Kit Carson Trail weaves throughout the streets, and several landmark buildings invite window shopping.

From antiques to home goods, fashion, and florists, this downtown area has a bit of everything. Other storefronts include music stores, art galleries, and comic book shops. The entire area is very pedestrian-friendly, and several nearby non-metered parking areas make it easy to ditch the car.

This downtown district also has restaurants catering to all three meals of the day. A few of the local favorites for dinner include The Basil and Garibaldi's Italian Kitchen . Breakfast is best served at places like Mom & Pop's Diner , and Scoups Ice Cream & Soup Bar offers both savory and sweet options.

Nevada State Railroad Museum

The Nevada State Railroad Museum preserves and displays the state's locomotive history. The museum is south of the downtown district and occupies a large building with several railcars and locomotives inside. Also among the museum's collection are photographs and memorabilia.

Many exhibits at the museum relate to the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad . This 1869 event transformed access between the coasts, ushering in a new era of trade and migration.

Other exhibits at the museum tell the continuing history of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad , one of the most famous short lines in America. The still-operating V&T rail line spans 22 miles from Carson City to Virginia City and played a vital role during the "Big Bonanza" of 1873. Today, commemorative railroad trips are available up and down the line.

Nevada State Museum

Head to the Nevada State Museum for a deep dive into the Silver State. Here, several artifacts and exhibits relate to the state's geology, history, and continuing story. It's a fun place to visit for some valuable insight and to start the Kit Carson Trail , as the historic walking trail extends in both directions from the museum.

The museum itself is within the historic Carson City Mint , dating back to the late 1800s. Permanent exhibits range in subject matter from native populations to the rocks and minerals that comprise the state's unique landscape. And every exhibit showcases great detail with informative panels and comprehensive replicas.

For more museum attractions, the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada is just across the street. This favorite family attraction is housed within the 1939 Carson City Auditorium , another historic downtown building. This experiential learning museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Washoe Lake State Park

This popular state park is on the southeast shore of Washoe Lake, less than a 15-minute drive north of the city. The park caters to several recreation outlets, including hiking, camping, and equestrian activities, and with waterfront access and a boat launch, it's also popular for water sports.

Whatever the activity, brilliant views of the opposing Carson Range backdrop the entire lake. This beautiful view often includes soaring wildlife across the sky, and the trails at the park offer a variety of landscapes, including dunes, beaches, and inland shrubs.

Washoe Lake State Park has 49 campsites available , some accommodating RVs up to 45 feet in length. No hookups are available, and all sites are up for grabs on a first-come, first-served basis throughout the year. Temperatures hit a max during the summer, and a few sites have shade structures to combat the heat.

Virginia & Truckee Railroad

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad is a historic short line dating back to the 1870s and the "Big Bonanza" in the region. This boom of gold and silver put Virginia City on the map, and the railroad became instrumental for transporting ore and supplies to and from Truckee. By 1872, the line connected to the larger Central Pacific Railroad.

Today, the V&T runs as a heritage line, offering scenic passenger trips from Truckee to Virginia City and back. These narrated tours depart from the Eastgate Depot and include a 3.5-hour layover in Virginia City. The route navigates scenic canyons and tunnels and takes approximately 90 minutes to cover the 22-mile length of the track.

Several other route options are also available. The holiday Polar Express route is perhaps the most popular, often selling out weeks in advance. Other notable rides include a Memorial Day Weekend Train and a Mother's Day Train. V&T Railway also has unique motor-assisted railbike tours available.

Bowers Mansion Regional Park

Bowers Mansion Regional Park is a scenic 13-mile drive north of the city, near the west shore of Washoe Lake. The park features expansive lawn space, different playground areas, and a popular public pool in the summer months. It's also the site of the Historic Bowers Mansion, dating back to 1864 when silver mining was at a boom.

The mansion has been meticulously restored and receives accolades for its 1860s accuracy. Guided tours are available on the weekends and holidays between Memorial Day and the end of October. Tours run every hour during these operating times. There's a small fee to tour the home.

While the mansion tour is enlightening, the surrounding parkland is also a popular place to visit. It's a beautiful outdoor landscaped space with tall trees all around, ideal for a picnic or casual time spent outside. During the week, it's a common gathering spot for playdates and adventure time.

Virginia City

Virginia City, Nevada, home to the 1870s " Big Bonanza " silver and gold boom, is a scenic 15-mile drive from Carson City. This historic mining town is also accessible via a ride on the V&T Railroad heritage line. And while this once "Queen of the Comstock" has long since busted its silver and gold deposits, much of its historic infrastructure remains.

Today, Virginia City is more of a tourist destination than a mining town. A long boardwalk straddles both sides of the main drag of Virginia City, with several colorful storefronts vying for attention. Here, the range of shopping extends from souvenirs to western fashion and includes more than one old-fashioned candy store.

Virginia City is also a hot spot for museums and historical attractions. The Mackay Mansion Museum and Fourth Ward School Museum are two visitor favorites. Another cultural icon worth seeking out is Saint Mary in the Mountains Catholic Church , although it's hard to miss.

Chimney Beach, Lake Tahoe

The western edge of Carson City limits includes Lake Tahoe shoreline. This proximity means residents of the city can reach the iconic blue waters with less than a 20-minute drive from downtown. And this access makes Lake Tahoe a popular outlet to enjoy throughout the year.

Highway 50 heading west out of town is the main access route to Lake Tahoe. This country-spanning highway passes by Spooner Lake , part of Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park . This outdoor space is popular with hiking and boating opportunities. Spooner Lake is also where the road forks to head south or north along Lake Tahoe.

Several beaches span both directions on the shoreline. To the north, places like Chimney Beach and Sand Harbor Beach draw a lot of attention. Secret Cove is also a popular spot, despite its name, and offers a known nudist beach. And heading south on the shoreline is the fastest route to Stateline and South Lake Tahoe.

Reno Arch

The "Biggest Little City in the World" is a half-hour drive north of Carson City. Reno has long since been a tourist destination, but the city has evolved into a top family destination in the state. Among its many family-friendly tourist attractions are museums, auditoriums, and wildlife sanctuaries.

Neon lights are also a big attraction of Reno, including the iconic Reno Arch on North Virginia Street. This illuminated arch and other lighted signs flash late into the night, offering guidance for the city's several dining and entertainment options.

A few museums in Reno to put on the radar include the National Automobile Museum and the Nevada Museum of Art . The massive National Bowling Stadium is also hard to miss when visiting, with a giant aluminum bowling bowl adorning the side of the building.

The 10 Best Things to Do in Carson City, Nevada

Last Modified: August 23, 2023 //  by  Anda //   17 Comments

Carson City was founded in 1858 and named for the famous frontiersman and scout Christopher “Kit” Carson. By virtue of its location – at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range – Carson City has tons of places to visit and things to do to keep you entertained.

From picturesque state parks, historic buildings, and interesting museums, to bustling casinos, and eclectic breweries, you can find just about any kind of entertainment in Nevada’s state capital.

Carson City originated as a stopover for California bound emigrants and white settlers seeking their fortune in the Gold Rush. But instead of gold, in 1859 the prospectors discovered silver in the hills east of Carson City. So much silver, that the area became the largest silver find in world history.

Although the silver mines provided the city’s economic importance in the beginning, Carson City continued to develop as a freight and staging center for the timber harvest in the Lake Tahoe basin as well. The city also had a mint which processed the rich ore found in nearby mines.

carson city nv places to visit

During those early years, Nevada’s legislative business was marked by fistfights and and political corruption. Many of those who gained their wealth during the mining boom settled in Carson City and were now trying to maneuver the law to their advantage.

Visiting the Courthouse in Carson City

Nevada obtained statehood status in 1864, but it wasn’t until 1870 that the construction on the state capitol began. The large stone structure with a silver-painted cupola that is today Carson City’s landmark, was completed only in 1872. That same year, a 52-mile railroad linking Carson City to Virginia City came into existence.

But at the end of the 19th century the nearby mines started to decline, so the miners began leaving the area. After World War I the city’s economy continued to deteriorate culminating with the worldwide economic plunge of the Great Depression.

Carson City in 1930s

By 1930, Carson City’s population was only about 1,500 citizens, about a quarter of what it had been 50 years earlier. Then in 1931 the State of Nevada enacted a law that permitted gambling in the area and divorce. Nevada was now famous for its speedy divorce and simple marriage procedures, so people began flocking back into Carson City.

Although a paved highway was now passing through town, the locals didn’t get to see much traffic on it. In those days Carson City was America’s smallest state capital.

Today Carson City thrives as a manufacturing center, with a population of over 55,000 people.

Best Things to Do in Carson City

Despite being the State Capital, Carson City is not a big place. You can visit its most important sites in just a few hours. In summer, you can take a horse-drawn carriage that will take you on a tour of the old neighborhoods. The tour originates at the Railroad Museum.

The best way to explore the city is to stroll through its historic neighborhoods. The Visitors Bureau provides an illustrated map with details and locations of many of the historic homes. Some of them have small transmitters that tell their stories.

So here are the best things to do in Carson City, Nevada:

Start your tour at the Nevada Railroad Museum. If you were to visit just one museum in Carson City, it should be this one. It’s really like taking a step back in time, when the steam locomotives were crawling the hills and valleys of the Nevada Northern Railway.

We toured the depot/ museum grounds, which is an operating yard, then went to the engine house to see other steam engines they have.

Visiting the Nevada Railroad Museum in Carson City

This is the only railroad museum we have ever visited which allows you walk around the shop. We had to stay out of the way of a moving engine. That’s how up-close-and-personal the visit was. A real trip back in time.

Visiting the Railroad Museum in Carson City

The train ride, well, it’s a train ride! We got to ride a historic steam engine locomotive that took us up to the mines that helped build this area back in the day. We chose to sit on the open platform car to hear whistle and the engine working. Choo, choo, choo… black smoke, white smoke… choo, choo, choo! It reminded us a lot about our ride aboard the Mocanita , the last working steam forestry train in Viseul-de-Sus, Romania.

The museum is located at 2180 South Carson Street, in Carson City, and is open between 9:00 am and 4:30 pm. Admission prices are: $8/adults. Children 17 & under are free.

Continue your tour with a visit to the Nevada State Museum. This is a very entertaining and informative place to visit, especially if you have children in your party. The museum focuses on the rich natural and cultural heritage of the state of Nevada. You’ll learn a lot about the local wildlife, see pre-historic bones, and even watch how silver coins were minted.

Pre-historic skeleton at the Nevada State Museum

There is a large section devoted to rocks, dinosaurs, and ancient mammals and fossilized dinosaurs which have been discovered in the area. There is a section of settlers’ houses and handicrafts and the evolution of modern Nevada.

In the basement the museum has recreated an underground mine. Visitors walks along a long, narrow path built to look as if you are walking between train tracks. On the side, mannequins with real equipment demonstrate each step of the mining process. We’ve spent about 45 min. in this recreated mine. It’s the best mine display we’ve ever visited.

In addition the museum also houses the Carson City Mint. Since there was so much silver being generated by the mining, Nevada petitioned the federal government to finance a mint. In the late 1800s, Carson City minted silver dollars with their CC imprint on them. The press is still operational but only mints commemorative coins now.

The museum is located at 600 North Carson Street, in Carson City. Opening days are: Wednesday to Saturday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Admission prices: $17 for adults. Children 17 and under are free.

One of the nicest things to do in Carson City is stroll through the beautiful grounds of the Capitol Complex, which is home to the city’s most important legislative and administrative buildings, like the Capitol Building, the County Courthouse, the Supreme Court, and the Nevada State Library and Archives.

Supreme Court in Carson City

The promenade is populated with beautiful statues, trees and lots of green spaces. We came here in winter, but it was a sunny day and very beautiful to walk around.

Visiting the Law Enforcement Memorial in Carson City

There are also two memorials on the grounds. One to the fallen Peace Officers and one to the US Veterans. The Capitol Complex is a very nice place to visit at any time of year.

Visiting the memorials in Carson City

Nevada’s Capitol Building has a very interesting history. When the founders of Carson City laid out the town in 1858, they set aside ten acres – known as the Plaza – in the belief that Carson City would be chosen as the capital of a new government in western Utah Territory. But instead, in 1861 Nevada Territory selected Carson City as its capital.

Visit Nevada State Capitol Building

In 1864 when Nevada became a state, everybody expected that the Plaza will be the home of the new capitol building. However, the Plaza remained empty for almost 10 years, because the constitutional convention made a provision that three legislative sessions had to pass no until a state capitol could be built.

Some people still believed that the capital would be moved to a more central location, but that did not happen. So, in 1869 the Nevada Capitol building was erected, making it the second oldest capitol building west of the Mississippi River.

Today, the capitol complex in the heart of Carson City provides a picturesque campus setting which includes the State Capitol, Legislative Building, Supreme Court, and State Library and Archives.

Walking tours are available on Saturdays only. However, if you want a guided tours of the State Capitol you have to request it by calling the Education Program at the Nevada State Museum at (775) 687-4810.

The Nevada Governor’s Mansion is the official residence of the Governor of Nevada and his family. The structure was erected in 1909 in a residential neighborhood with typical middle class houses nearby.

Governor's Mansion in Carson City

Unfortunately, the mansion is only open to the public for inside tours on select days and holidays.

Know as the Kit Carson Trail , this 2.5 mile path through the historic district features stops at the different landmarks in Carson City, including some 1800s Victorian-style homes and churches.

These landmarks are not only beautiful sites to see, but they also tell the story of the capital city’s history. To pick up a printed map, download one here or stop by the Carson City Visitors Center at 716 N. Carson Street.

Located on the main street in Carson City, the Carson Nugget is an iconic hotel and casino that has been serving locals and visitors alike for more than 60 years. The renowned property occupies nearly 30,000 square feet, offering comfortable accommodations, gaming tables and slot machines.

So if you want to try your luck at gambling, you don’t have to travel all the way to Las Vegas ! But in addition to game rooms, the Nugget is also home to the Carson Comedy Club, that features local comedians and many talented artists and performers.

In case you haven’t noticed, Carson City has an abundance of antique stores. Really, there is a ton! I guess any town that has been around for more than 100 years is going to have stores where you’ll find collectibles.

Shopping for antiques in Carson City

And if you like this kind of stuff, you’ll have a blast in downtown Carson City. The main street is packed with antique stores, inviting you in with ads like: “Let’s Make a Deal!” So how can you resist?

There is no shortage of good bear in Nevada. So it comes to no surprise that Carson City is home to some historic breweries, like Shoe Tree Brewing Company, the Fox Brewpub, or the Union.

Union Brewery in Carson City

And since you are already in town, don’t miss the opportunity to try some draft beer in one of these historic places.

If you want to take a stroll in a beautiful green area, visit Fuji Park. The 14-acre park sits next to the Carson City Fairgrounds and Baily Fishing Pond. There is also a creek that passes through the park, bordered by willows and cottonwood trees.

Visit Fuji Park, one of the things to do in Carson City

We discovered the park because we needed a spot to let our dog burn off some energy before heading back to Tahoe. This park has a little of everything. There are two large dog play areas towards the west side of the park. Additionally, and a large grassed area in-between where they only allow dogs on leashes.

There is a building in the center of the park where they always have events such as auctions, indoor archery, dog training, etc. Fishing is near highway 395, but you will need fishing license for fishing here.

There is a large variety of local and international restaurants in Carson City, from American, to Mexican, Chinese, Italian, Indian, and Thai. There are even a couple of traditional Basque restaurants featuring cuisine from Europe’s Pyrenees Mountains. You can dine in style, at a fine restaurant, or just grab a bite from fast food eatery, or a small bakeries.

Red’s Old 395 Grill

If you are a barbecue fanatic, Red’s Old 395 Grill is a place for you. They serve the best beef brisket in town and other delicious barbecue specialties at very reasonable prices.

Red's Old Grill Restaurant dining room

The setting is also very chic, with a rustic ambiance and many funky wall decorations.

The Fox Brewpub

The Fox Brewpub is an English-style restaurant and brewpub located within the Historic St. Charles Hotel which came into existance in 1862. The restaurant serves an American and Mexican fusion menu with nachos, tacos, chicken wings, burgers, beef stew and other delicious dishes.

The Fox Brewpub dining room

Exploring Carson City will most likely take you about a day if you plan to visit all the museums, the historic area and the cemetery. There are a few souvenir shops and art galleries where you could spend a little time, but otherwise shopping is not out of the ordinary. Just the usual chain stores.

Duke’s Steak House

Located at Casino Fandango, Duke’s is among Nevada’s premier restaurants and was voted the BEST for Steak in Carson City. We dined here only once, for my birthday, but we absolutely loved the food! The prices were very decent too, considering the quality of the dishes.

Trivia : Carson City was home to many interesting figures including George Ferris, the inventor of the Ferris Wheel. The Ferris Wheel was inspired by a water wheel at Cradlebaugh Bridge on the Carson River.

The city is also very close to some fun places like the Reno, historic Virginia City, Gardnerville, or Genoa , Nevada’s oldest community.

Weather wise, the summers are hot and arid, but mostly clear. The winters are very cold, snowy, and partly cloudy in Carson City. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 22°F to 89°F and is rarely below 11°F or above 96°F. That means it’s never too cold or too hot to visit Carson City.

Things to do in Carson City

The best time of the year to visit this area is from May through October, when you can take part in a variety of special events and outdoor activities, visit the beaches in Lake Tahoe , or go fishing in the many streams around.

Beach in Lake Tahoe

But the valley doesn’t loose its charm in winter, when instead fishing, golfing and hiking are replaced by winter sports. In fact, we prefer winters in this area when we can go skiing in Lake Tahoe , which is just across the mountain (45 minutes away).

Did I convince you to visit Carson City? I hope so.

I’m sorry that you missed out on a day of skiing, but exploring Carson City looks like a rather dandy consolation prize. I would love to peek inside some of those Victorian homes that you photographed. And I love that photo of the rainbow across the field. I may even detect a very faint 2nd rainbow in the photo. You know what they say, you can’t have rainbows without rain.

I have never been to Carson City but I have always been interested in going out to the “gold country” areas of western CA/Nevada. They always looked really cool to me and I tend to really love former mining towns, and Carson City looks like a great place to explore.

11 Things To Do In Carson City

The passage of the Pacific Railroad Act of 1862 by President Abraham Lincoln paved the way for constructing a transcontinental railroad, considered one of the most significant technological feats of the 19th century. Railroads were a vital link for trade, commerce, and travel during that time. Nevada had a crucial role in the US railroad system’s growth. It is recognized as the western component of the transcontinental railroad when the Central Pacific was extended to the north in 1868 and early 1869,

Opening in 1980, the Nevada State Railroad Museum preserved Nevada’s rich railroad history . It occupies a large building as it houses several railroads and locomotives.

Most exhibits in the Museum depict the completion of the transcontinental railroad and show the history of the Virginia & Truckee(V & T) Railroad. V & T is still operating, serving Carson City to Virginia City commuters.

Kit Carson Colorado

Carson City has been the capital of Nevada since 1864. This is very evident when you walk around its streets. From the Capitol to some of the aesthetic buildings in the area, which still stand from the 1800s. Get to know their history and of the city itself at the Kit Carson Trail.

The 2.5-mile tour starts from the Capitol Complex to the West Side Historic District. The tour will take you to buildings like the Governor’s Mansion, historic homes, and century-old churches.

A visit to the Kit Carson Trail is a must-do in Carson City . There are nearly 50 landmarks on the tour, making it the most extensive history walk in Nevada. At the edge of each building, there are information placards that can help you get a picture of the early history of Carson City.

The partially marked trail takes you to Victorian-style homes and landmarks. The Kit Carson Trail is one of the best attractions in the city.

Located in the Historic Disrict of the city’s West Side , The Kit Carson Trail is open throughout the year and can be visited from morning to evening.

Dating back to the 1870s, the Virginia & Truckee Railroad played a huge role in transporting ore and supplies to and from Truckee.

By 1872, this line was connected to the much bigger Central Pacific Railroad. Now you can navigate these rail tracks and return to those times with a railbike tour.

The route is a 90-minute ride along the 22-mile length of the track and will take you to scenic canyons, tunnels, and lakes.

The railbikes are 4-person sitdown quad bikes that you pedal along on an unused section of the track. These tracks were used for mining gold and silver.

The 6-mile route allows you to look for wild horses. You must get off the rail bike and take a hike in some rides. Some bikes feature a pedal assist to help smoothen the ride for those who feel they cannot handle the ride uphill.

Lake Tahoe

We all like dipping in a cool lake or swimming pool, but it is only sometimes possible. Lake Tahoe, for example, is not recommended for swimming because it is always cold and includes the risk of hypothermia.

Luckily, Carson City offers an exciting alternative for those who want to go for a swim. It isn’t as cold as Lake Tahoe, but it can help rejuvenate your body.

Carson City is known for having more hot springs than any other state. The water from the hot springs flows out of the ground from 35,000 feet below the earth’s surface.

These waters are rich in beneficial minerals like sodium, silica, potassium, sulfate, calcium, fluoride, and magnesium, to name just a few. These natural springs can help decrease body toxins, muscle relaxation, and increase feelings of tranquility.

The Reno Arch

Next to Vegas, Reno may be the next most popular city in Nevada. A half-hour drive from Carson City, Nicknamed “Biggest Little City in the World,” Reno is a family-friendly destination with museums, auditoriums, and wildlife sanctuaries.

A trip to Reno will only be complete with visiting the Reno Arch and all the other neon lights, a trademark of the city. These are best seen late into the night. These lighted signs guide drivers to dining and entertainment establishments.

The National Bowling Stadium is the most recognizable building in Reno. Standing 363,000 square feet, it stands out because of its facade’s 80-foot aluminum geodesic dome, designed to resemble a large bowling ball. Often called the “Taj Mahal of Tenpins,” the National Bowling Stadium features 78 bowling lanes utilizing automatic scoring.

It was inaugurated in February 1995. It can be converted into a convention space. It featured movies like Kingpin, starring Bill Murray and Woody Harrelson and Greedy, whose stars are Michael J, Fox, and Kirk Douglas.

Who would have imagined a waterfall in the middle of a canyon? Well, that’s exactly what King’s Canyon Falls is. A waterfall is considered a rarity in a state known for its deserts. It is one of the highlights of Carson City activities . Reaching the waterfalls can be challenging as you must follow a steep forest route, a 1.5-mile climb to the falls.

Adding to the challenge is the scorching desert heat, which could reach over 90F by mid-June. If you are keen on climbing the trail to see the falls, the best time is spring or early summer.

On average, the route will take around 19 minutes to complete. This is also a popular route for bikers and the perfect place to have some peace and quiet. If you make it up the trail, you will only realize how worthwhile the climb is with the stunning views from the falls.

Nevada State Capitol

Since its completion in 1871, the state capitol building has been the seat of the Nevada government. The Act calling for the construction of the Capitol Building was passed by the state legislature and signed into law by Governor Henry Biusdel in 1869.

For over 50 years, all branches of state government were housed at the Capitol Building. The judicial branch– the Supreme Court– held office there until 1937, and the legislative branch until 1971. It continues to be the home of the governor, the executive branch.

The State Capitol is easily recognizable by its silver-colored dome and Alaskan marble features. It features a brize statue of Sarah Winnemucca, an advocate of the rights of American Indians, and portraits of previous Nevadan governors and other legendary state residents.

The second floor of the Capitol building houses the Battle Born Hall, a 2,000-square-foot space that tells the story of state trailblazers as well as the history of the Silver State.

Lake Tahoe State Park

Lake Tahoe is one of the most beautiful Carson City attractions. Get to see how beautiful it is from a different view– on a hang glider. You fly above the Sierra Nevada Desert in Washoe County or the High Sierra mountains. Catch a glimpse of the Reno, Carson Valley, and Lake Tahoe areas.

You can fly on a separate aircraft with your spouse, friend, or family member. Each hang glider carries one instructor and one student.

During the experience, you will take an interactive flight lesson on a powered hang glider. The FAA-approved hang glider uses a modern wing that runs on a Rotax-powered aircraft engine. You get fitted with a flight suit and helmet and briefed about the basics of flight safety.

The aircraft has a two-way intercom for seamless communication between students and instructors. The good thing about this experience is that you get a signed flight certificate which can be credited to your total flight time should you decide to pursue a flight course.

Reno Balloon Race

Nothing can top the experience of seeing the beauty of Carson City from a hot air balloon. The experience takes you on a tour of Carson Valley, an ideal spot for such an experience because of the multiple layers of air flowing in different directions at different altitudes.

Get unparalleled breathtaking views of the city and see wildlife such as bald and golden eagles, red-tailed hawks, deer, and others.

During the trip, you learn about the different attractions from your pilot. You will fly on board a state-of-the-art FAA-certified hot air balloon.

You will be accompanied by licensed and experienced pilots. During the trip, make sure to wear weather-appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes. Only two to three passengers are allowed on the balloon for safety purposes.

The Silver and Snowflakes Tree Lighting Festival is a tradition that started in 1914. It was the brainchild of the Leisure Hour Club, which devised the idea of decorating a living pine tree during the Christmas season.

They used one of the pine trees on the southwest corner of the Capitol building as the perfect tree for the celebration. After decorating the tree, they will hang presents for the children of the city. For the first celebration, nearly 1,500 kids received gifts from Santa.

In 1973, however, the festival was stopped due to the energy crisis. The governor during that time wanted to conserve energy and decided to keep the Christmas Tree dark. In 1988, the festival returned and the Christmas tree has remained lit ever since.

In Carson City, the Festival of Lights is a recent event through the efforts of the Chamber of Commerce, which wanted to bring a community feel and unity among the residents.

One of the fun things to do in Carson City is to sample a pint or two of beer served at the Shoe Tree Brewing Co. The brewery offers experimental and traditional brews.

You can enjoy a glass of locally brewed and exquisite-tasting beer. If you want to sample various recipes, there is a tasting room where you can do so. Founded by brothers Jeff and Paul Young in 2017, Shoe Tree achieved instant success with the Wicked Shifty and Blood Orange.

Shoe Tree Brewing Company is located at the Carson Hot Springs. It operates seven days a week from 12 pm to 9 pm.

The brewery occupies 1,800 square feet of space. It has a seven-barrel brewhouse with a four-fermenter farm and an on-site tasting room. It can produce 600 barrels of finished beer annually. It also has a store that sells company-related merchandise.

Carson City is a place worth visiting by people looking for an alternative to Las Vegas. You can do many things in Carson City that can truly make your day.

Best options in Carson City for 5 popular outdoor activities

Between America's sprawling public lands system and our nearly universal love for road trips, outdoor recreation isn't exactly a new phenomenon in the U.S. However, according to reports from the Census Bureau , millions more Americans have been getting outside since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, breaking records and generating billions of dollars in revenue for many outdoor industries.

It's easy to understand why outdoor recreation has become so popular in a post-pandemic world—spending time outside can do so much more than just help you catch a tan. Studies show that participating in outdoor activities can improve focus, reduce stress, and lead to higher energy levels. That's to say nothing of the physical benefits, like lower risk for cardiovascular disease .

Though more Americans are spending time outside than ever before, many people who live in large cities still struggle to find outdoor spaces and activities near them. But contrary to popular belief, you don't need to drive far from home or spend hours prepping for a strenuous workout to enjoy the great outdoors. Instead, set aside some time to meander through your nearest botanical garden, or spend your lunch break picnicking at a local park. Adding even a few extra minutes of fresh air to your day can help boost your mental and physical health.

Whether you want to explore hiking trails, relax on a sandy beach, or try your hand at an unfamiliar sport, your new favorite outdoor destination could be right around the corner. To help you decide where to go and what to do, Stacker compiled a list of the best places for popular outdoor activities in Carson City using data from Yelp as of April 12, 2024. Locations and businesses were selected using Yelp's ranking system, which calculates an adjusted rating value that takes into account the number of ratings as well as the rating score itself.

Read on to discover where you should plan your next day out, and don't forget to grab that sunblock.

  • 7 Breathtaking Towns to Visit in Nevada

Nevada is a relatively quiet state, being the 32nd most populated state with only around 3.1 million residents. For this precise reason, however, tourists flock to this state for its vast, tranquil, and wonderful landscapes. Dotted throughout is a collection of small towns that epitomize the old-western vibe Nevada tends to have. Often overlooked for larger cities like Reno and Las Vegas , these towns showcase an untouched insight into Nevada’s charm. From the saloons in Virginia City to Genoa Bar in Genoa, let’s look at seven of the most breathtakingly beautiful towns to visit whenever in Nevada.

Virginia City

Main Street in Virginia City, Nevada.

Virginia City , considered a National Historic Landmark, takes visitors back to the Old West. This town emerged during the 19th-century silver rush, becoming one of Nevada's most prominent mining hubs. Today, visitors flock to its main street, which is lined with old-timey wooden boardwalks, saloons, and shops selling everything from souvenirs to hiking supplies. Among these, the Bucket of Blood Saloon stands out as an interestingly named outlet perfect for a chilled drink.

Historic sites like the Comstock Lode, which once produced immense wealth, invite history buffs to explore. For an authentic experience, visit the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, where you can ride vintage trains through the nearby mountains. The Piper's Opera House, built in the 19th century, showcases the town's longstanding cultural history to the region, offering tours and events year-round. Meanwhile, ghost and mine tours are also available for an offbeat experience.

Aerial view of Genoa, Nevada.

Genoa is Nevada's oldest settlement, founded in 1851, and it holds onto its pioneer roots. The town is tucked at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and near the shores of the world-famous Lake Tahoe , providing some of the best views and a selection of outdoor activities in the country. Genoa's downtown contains many of the things you will need during your stay, like grocery stores, outdoor outfitters, and a decent selection of hotels and motels.

A notable landmark in Genoa is the Mormon Station State Historic Park, where the first permanent trading post in what was to be the Nevada Territory was established. This park features many displays and locations related to the state's early pioneers with its reconstructed fort and museum. Just outside town, visitors can hike the Genoa Canyon Trail for a panoramic look at the Carson Valley and the surrounding mountains. After touring the outdoors, travelers should head to the refreshing Genoa Bar & Saloon. This bar first opened in 1853 and claims to be Nevada's oldest drink parlor, having served notable visitors including Mark Twain and Ulysses S. Grant.

Boulder City

Panoramic view of Boulder City with Lake Mead in the backround.

Boulder City , located near the iconic Hoover Dam , a hydroelectric dam that is vital to the region, has a unique history as a planned town for dam workers in the 1930s. It has since grown into a vibrant community with a strong sense of civic pride. The town offers visitors a range of attractions and activities, from historical sites to outdoor recreation. Most visitors head straight to Downtown Boulder City, which features art galleries, shops, and restaurants with a small-town vibe. However, the area truly shines during local events, like the Boulder City Arts Festival, a display of local art and culture.

As mentioned, one of the main draws is the Hoover Dam, a marvel of engineering and a symbol of American ingenuity. Tourists can actually take an extensive tour of the dam and learn about its meticulous construction and significance. Boulder City is also a gateway to Lake Mead National Recreation Area, where one can enjoy boating, fishing, hiking, or just a simple picnic in the hot Nevada sun.

View of the Commercial Casino in Elko, Nevada.

Elko sits in the rugged and sparsely populated (even compared to the rest of the state) northeastern portion of Nevada. It has a strong cowboy heritage and vibrant Basque culture, due to the amount of Basque ranchers that emigrated here to tend to the vast flocks of sheep and cattle that also call this place home. As a hub for ranching and mining, Elko shows visitors a real slice of the American West. To this end, the town is famous for its annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, which celebrates the cowboy lifestyle through poetry, music, and art. During this festival, Elko becomes a focal point for Western culture, perfect for the cowboy/poet inside everyone.

Those who miss out on the event can head to the Western Folklife Center downtown, which contains exhibits related to the region's heritage and hosts various events throughout the year. Elko also celebrates its Basque heritage, with several Basque restaurants serving traditional Basque dishes. After a meal, one can enjoy outdoor adventures at the nearby Ruby Mountains, with its off-road biking and hiking trails.

Historic buildings in Tonopah, Nevada.

Tonopah is halfway between Las Vegas and Reno, making it a great stop on a road trip through Nevada. This small town was once a booming mining center, and remnants of its past can still be seen throughout the area. For more on this, check out the Tonopah Historic Mining Park, an outdoor museum that showcases the town's mining history with various plaques, machinery, and even mine tours. Tonopah also contains many historic buildings which are very nicely preserved in this arid environment, some of which are now hotels and bed-and-breakfasts. The Mizpah Hotel, built in 1907, is a notable hotel that retains its original elegance and is said to be haunted, adding a touch of mystery to your visit (maybe come over for Halloween ).

The nearby Stargazing Park is another great attraction in the wilderness of Nevada, recognized for its exceptionally dark skies. It's a perfect spot for stargazing due to the almost complete lack of any big cities nearby that often put out light pollution , attracting astronomers and amateur skywatchers alike.

The historic Caliente Railroad Depot in Nevada

Caliente is located in the far southeastern portion of Nevada. Like many of the towns on this list, it is known for its railroad history and easy access to beautiful desert landscapes. Established in the early 20th century as a railroad hub, Caliente and its historic train depot are one of the most iconic landmarks for "train spotters" in the state. The depot has been restored and now serves as a visitor center.

Caliente boasts endless sage-covered foothills and mountains, rich, dramatic canyons, and colorful rock formations. Kershaw-Ryan State Park, just a short drive from town, is an idyllic natural area with hiking trails, picnic spots, and a vibrant garden area. The Rainbow Canyon area, a close drive away, also offers excellent opportunities for photography and birdwatching, with its rugged cliffs and diverse wildlife.

Gardnerville

View of Downtown Gardnerville, Nevada.

To the northwestern portion of Nevada, Gardnerville is a popular place for Reno and Carson City residents to escape. The town's downtown core has that classic Western feel that many experience when in this region of the United States . Older buildings, dating back to the founding of the state, house amenities for visitors like stores, restaurants, antique shops, and more. Visitors can check out places like the Red Barn Antiques and buy a piece of old West history themselves. Gardnerville's annual Carson Valley Days celebration is a highlight, featuring parades, live music, and community events that bring locals and visitors together.

Gardnerville is well known as a gateway to outdoor activities, with easy access to the Sierra Nevada mountains and the Carson River. For a more educational time outdoors, The Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park will teach you about the area's extensive ranching history, with guided tours of the historic ranch buildings available.

Take Your Breath Away in Nevada

Nevada's small towns offer diverse experiences, from the historic streets of Virginia City to the natural beauty surrounding Caliente. Each town provides its unique charm and attractions, whether it's the cowboy culture of Elko, the stargazing opportunities in Tonopah, or the vibrant community events in Gardnerville. These breathtaking towns can provide a refreshing alternative to Nevada's more famous urban centers, inviting visitors to explore history, nature, and local traditions. No matter where you go, you're bound to discover something special in Nevada's small towns.

Save Some Bucks: 10 Most Affordable Towns To Visit In Nevada

A trip through Nevada is a chance to experience the best of the American Southwest, but it doesn't have to come at the expense of one's wallet. While big cities like Las Vegas have a lot to offer visitors, from unique luxury Vegas hotels to early morning hot air balloon trips over the Mojave Desert and exotic helicopter night rides, they are hardly the only option for a Nevada visit.

Fortunately for travelers, many of the best towns to visit in Nevada are also the most affordable. Off of the main tourist path, these ten budget-friendly Nevada towns may be cheap to visit but are bursting with activity and desert sites both indoors and out.

For a family-friendly, small-town Nevada vacation, Fernley has everything. Free attractions like the Truckee River and Pyramid Lake make it easy to save money in Fernley while enjoying the great outdoors. Numerous outdoor activities are easily accessible, including fishing holes, hiking trails, boating docks, and camping sites. The open desert landscape, home to wild horses and various other desert dwellers, is also ideal for mountain biking and riding ATVs. Like many of the most popular destinations in Nevada, Fernley has several casinos for tourists to try their luck at.

For all the luxury of Las Vegas without the Vegas prices, nearby Henderson is the perfect Nevada vacation destination. One of the most affordable places in Nevada to live and to visit, Henderson has all the casino and nightlife access of Vegas but with more reasonable accommodation prices. In the city itself, visitors can enjoy the local museums and natural preserves. Henderson is also near the famous Hoover Dam, which is well worth a day trip of its own . Henderson is also a very walkable town, making it easier to save on transportation while traveling as well.

Carson City

The best towns and cities for an affordable vacation in Nevada are ones with plenty of free activities to explore. Carson City, just south of Reno along the western border of Nevada, is full of unique museums and city attractions. As the capital of Nevada, the city is home to the Capital Building and the Governor's Mansion, both of which can be explored for free. Carson City also encompasses a small portion of the Lake Tahoe shore and its beautiful forest shores. Of course, the city also has several of the colorful casinos that Nevada is well known for, ensuring a class Nevada experience for all who pass through.

Boulder City

Located in Southern Nevada, Boulder City's claim to fame is the internationally known Hoover Dam. Formed along the Colorado River to create Lake Mead, the Hoover Dam is a historically significant feat of engineering that continues to attract visitors year after year. Fortunately for travelers, Boulder City itself is full of things to do and see , many of which are affordable outdoor and indoor activities. Aside from the Colorado River and Lake Mead, both of which have free and inexpensive access points, the city has historic railroads and cultural sites to wander through, offering a wide variety of options for guests looking for a unique way to experience Nevada.

For a firsthand look at the American West and its colorful history, Elko, Nevada, is the place to visit. With just over 20,000 residents, Elko is a perfect blend of big-city convenience and small-town charm. Elko is famous for its cultural events, museums celebrating the history of the West, and fusion of Native American and Western arts. Fortunately for visitors, enjoying this history doesn't have to come at a heavy price; Elko is one of the cheapest towns in Nevada to visit, and its murals and crafts for sale can be enjoyed by just wandering the streets. Plus, highlights like the Northeastern Nevada Museum come in at just $8 per adult and $2 for kids 12 and under.

The only town in Humboldt County, Winnemucca is a popular Nevada stop for travelers thanks to its position at the intersection of I-80, Highway 93, and Highway 40. It's also one of the cheapest Nevada towns to visit as a tourist. Whether guests are exploring Nevada or just passing through as part of a larger road trip adventure, Winnemucca is a fun, affordable stop full of reasonably priced local food and lodging options and unique attractions to fill the day. Visit the dried Winnemucca Lake and surrounding areas, most of which are owned by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and therefore are free to explore. In town, there is the Humboldt Museum and multiple parks to picnic in to complete a relaxing afternoon in the Nevada sun.

West Wendover

Wendover is one of the most affordable cities in Nevada to visit, but it's a city that actually bridges two states, Nevada and Utah. West Wendover, the city on the Nevada side, is full of flashy casinos with complimentary drinks for those playing the slots. The biggest sight around Wendover, however, is the Bonneville Salt Flats just across the state line, a 26,000-acre stretch that can be freely explored on foot or by driving along I-80. The Flats are covered in a thin layer of water at various times of the year, creating a beautiful mirror effect on the water. With such unique free views to enjoy, there's no need to break the bank in this low-cost Nevada town.

One of the most beautiful towns in Nevada, Wells is unique due to its mountainous position and nearby lake views. Stay in the town or go camping at nearby Angel Lake before enjoying a day of hiking, biking, or fishing. Angel Lake is also popular for photographers looking for the perfect shot of wildlife and for nature lovers who hope to view some of the most unique residents of the Nevada desert. Free outdoor recreation options around Wells continue in Lamoille Canyon and 12 Mile Hot Springs. With so many outdoor activities to enjoy, it's no wonder Wells is one of the best stops for road trippers along Route 93 and I-80 alike.

Related: Not All Deserts: 10 Best Mountain Towns In Nevada

For those not afraid of the true Nevada heat, Mesquite is the perfect place to enjoy an affordable Nevada vacation. Explore the red rocks of the American Southwest at Gold Butte National Monument free of charge, or escape the sun in either the Virgin Valley Heritage Museum or Mesquite Fine Arts Gallery, both of which are also free and instead take donations when possible. Mesquite is also a great central location for day trips to Bryce Canyon National Park, Cathedral Gorge, and Cedar Breaks National Monument, all beautiful outdoor excursions for a one-of-a-kind, inexpensive Nevada vacation.

The best way to enjoy an inexpensive visit to Nevada is to spend time in towns with an abundance of free attractions and sights. Ely, Nevada, nicely situated along Route 93 on the eastern side of the state, is a haven of outdoor activities and unique cultural festivals and is thus one of the best cheap towns to visit in Nevada. Depending on the time of year, visitors to Ely can enjoy the Tears and Beers, Fire & Ice Winter Festival, Great Basin Astronomy Festival, and many other special events that are free for whoever is in town. Travelers can also enjoy the Nevada Northern Railway Museum for just $10 a person, which includes free walking tours of the railway grounds and rides on the historic train itself for those who decide to spend a little extra.
