  • Press the ▼ button to toggle the selection to “ Trip 1 ” or “ Trip 2 “.

While the trip odometer you wish to reset is displayed, press and hold the “ SET/CLR ” button for a few seconds until the computer is reset.

That’s it! You have successfully reset the trip odometer on the Chevy Equinox.

Does the trip odometer reset itself on a chevy equinox?

No, the trip odometer on a Chevy Equinox does not reset itself automatically. The trip odometer is a feature that allows you to measure the distance traveled during a specific trip or period of time, and it must be manually reset by the driver.

What does resetting the trip odometer do?

Resetting the trip odometer on a vehicle sets the distance traveled back to zero. This can be useful for keeping track of the distance traveled during a specific trip or period of time, such as a daily commute or a road trip.

By resetting the trip odometer, you can easily monitor the distance traveled for that particular trip or period without having to manually calculate the distance. Additionally, some drivers use the trip odometer to track the fuel efficiency of their vehicle by resetting it after a fill-up and comparing the distance traveled to the amount of fuel consumed.

What is a Trip Odometer: Explaining Your Car’s Mileage Tracker

A trip odometer is a useful feature found alongside the main odometer on a vehicle’s dashboard. It provides additional information to the driver by tracking the distance covered during individual trips.

Unlike the main odometer, which logs the total mileage the vehicle has accumulated over its lifetime, a trip odometer can be reset. This allows drivers to measure the distance of specific journeys, monitor fuel consumption for precise distances, or gauge travel time for regular routes without affecting the permanent record of total miles traveled by the vehicle.

What is a Trip Odometer: Explaining Your Car’s Mileage Tracker

We can reset the trip odometer before starting a new journey to ensure accurate distance tracking for that particular trip.

Many modern vehicles come with digital odometers, which include one or more trip meters providing an easy-to-read display.

The advantage of having this information readily available helps us manage our driving patterns, plan for maintenance, and keep tabs on vehicle performance.

It’s a straightforward yet indispensable tool that complements the comprehensive data offered by the vehicle’s dashboard.

Trip Odometer: A Detailed Dive

Odometers have been central to how we understand vehicle usage. They track the total distance a vehicle has traveled, transitioning from mechanical gears to crisp digital displays.

Evolution from Mechanical to Digital

Initially, odometers were mechanical devices, consisting of a series of gears connected to the vehicle’s transmission. As the car moved, the rotation of the wheels turned the gears, advancing the odometer’s display to reflect the distance traveled.

Their durability meant they could last the lifetime of the vehicle, but they were not without drawbacks. Precise calibration was essential to ensure accuracy, and physical wear could eventually lead to inaccuracy or failure.

In recent years, digital odometers have largely replaced mechanical ones. They work by receiving electronic signals from a sensor, usually located in the vehicle’s transmission.

These signals are then processed by the vehicle’s computer system to display the traveled distance on the digital screen.

Digital odometers offer more than just a readout of total distance; their integration with the vehicle’s electronic systems allows for additional features like trip meters and maintenance reminders.

How Odometers Measure Distance

This distance is known as the tire’s circumference, and by counting each revolution, odometers can determine how far the car has gone.

For a more comprehensive look, here’s an overview:

A trip odometer , specifically, allows us to measure the distance for individual journeys. Located within the instrument cluster, it operates similarly to the main odometer but can be reset to zero, providing separate tracking for the distance of specific trips.

This function is valuable for mileage tracking for business travel, monitoring fuel efficiency, or even just noting the length of a road trip.

A speedometer , by contrast, informs us how fast the vehicle is moving at any given moment, which, although related to distance measurement, serves a separate role in the vehicle’s suite of instrumentation.

The Role of Odometers in Vehicle Maintenance

Odometers serve as vital tools for monitoring vehicle health and scheduling maintenance. They provide essential data that allow us to keep our vehicles running efficiently.

Tracking Mileage for Service Intervals

  • Engine Oil : Replace approximately every 5,000 miles
  • Air Filter : Replace around 15,000 to 30,000 miles
  • Transmission Fluid : Change every 30,000 to 60,000 miles

Fuel Economy and Efficiency

Fuel economy can be optimized through diligent maintenance, using the trip odometer to monitor fuel use between fill-ups.

This helps us assess the vehicle’s fuel efficiency and detect potential issues, which is especially important for the engine and transmission systems.

Accurate readings enable targeted improvements in driving habits or prompt service checks to prevent inefficiencies.

Detecting and Preventing Odometer Fraud

In our experience, preventing odometer fraud begins with awareness and understanding of the common tampering methods. The knowledge of legal protections further adds to a consumer’s defense against this crime.

Common Methods of Odometer Tampering

Odometer fraud is a deceptive act aimed to increase a used car’s resale value by reducing the mileage displayed. Tampering often involves disconnection , resetting , or alteration of the odometer.

Physical Tampering: Manual rolling back of miles on older odometers.

Electronic Tampering: Using sophisticated software to reprogram digital odometers.

Vehicle Data Interference: Altering mileage data in vehicle control units.

To combat these illegal practices, we suggest the following preventative measures :

  • Service Records Analysis : Cross-reference the odometer reading with historical service data.
  • Wear and Tear Inspection : Physical signs of use may not match with the reported mileage.
  • Diagnostic Tools : Use electronic diagnostics to fetch original mileage data from the vehicle’s computer.

Legal Implications and Consumer Protection

Odometer tampering is illegal and violators may face substantial penalties, including fines and imprisonment.

Consumers should be aware that:

We need to ensure that consumers are aware of their rights and the steps taken to seek retribution.

Reporting suspected fraud to agencies like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is crucial.

Regulations at both federal and state levels are in place as a safety net for those impacted by this crime.

Also, professional inspections by certified mechanics can provide an additional layer of protection during the used car buying process.

How far can a 2017 Hyundai Elantra travel?

2017 Elantra Limited, with an EPA rating of 28/37/32 mpg city/highway/combined, served as our test vehicle. That highway number was put to the test throughout our vacation because it involved a lot of expressway driving and cruise control.

Before we departed, we filled up with petrol and reset the trip computer. Two days later, we went back to the same station and pump. Unfortunately, a malfunctioning pump overfilled our tank before shutting off, or rather, before we shut it off, scowl included, to thwart any calculations made at the pump. (Without the sheepdog, consider Jeff Daniels in “Dumb and Dumber”). All that was left was the computer.

By that calculation, the Elantra nearly achieved its EPA highway rating of 36.8 mpg over a distance of 369.0 miles while traveling at an average speed of 54 mph. And all of that occurred when the automatic climate control was set to its automated temperature range of 68 to 72 degrees and the vehicle was in Normal driving mode. We didn’t use the Sport or Eco modes that the driver might choose, instead opting to drive normally on a road trip, music preferences and all.

The circumstances weren’t ideal. On the westward drive, it was in the 30s with rain and snow mixed in. On the way back, the temperatures rose to the 40s with a little drizzle, but both legs were windy. According to Weather Underground data throughout our route, sustained crosswinds were in the teens with gusts up to 30 mph (more on the eastbound return journey than the westbound part). A GM engineer once told us that those circumstances should significantly reduce gas mileage, but the Elantra nevertheless achieved its highway rating.

Due to the continued low cost of gas, compact sedan sales have suffered as consumers turn to SUVs and trucks. Sales of the Elantra have decreased by 30.6 percent in the first three months of 2016 despite the redesign. But compacts will continue to be a mainstay in the American automobile industry for some time to come, especially as gas costs start to rise once more. Stay tuned; eventually, we intend to compare the new Elantra to the rest of its updated class to see which vehicle excels in a variety of areas, including mileage.

What is the maximum mileage for a Hyundai Elantra?

I want to purchase a used Hyundai Elantra, but I want to be sure it will be a wise purchase. How many miles should a Hyundai Elantra provide?

On a full tank, how far can a Hyundai Elantra travel?

For my next vehicle, I’ve been thinking about the Hyundai Elantra, but I’m not sure if it gets decent gas mileage or not. I want to make sure I get a fuel-efficient automobile because I drive a lot. What sort of fuel economy might I anticipate? Is the Hyundai Elantra fuel-efficient?

It’s great that you’re thinking about fuel efficiency before you purchase your new vehicle! The 2022 SE model of the Hyundai Elantra achieves an average fuel economy of 38 miles per gallon. For a more precise breakdown, the Elantra SE achieves 33 MPG in the city and 43 MPG on the highway, which is much better than most vehicles of that size.

You will still get a fair amount of range from the Elantra even after accounting for its smaller petrol tank. A full tank of gas for the Elantra allows for a 490-mile range. This makes it one of the modern world’s most fuel-efficient sedan-style cars.

How durable are Hyundai engines?

The most important features that most buyers consider when buying a car are dependability and durability. Given the large investment that buying a car entails, it stands to reason that owners would want to ensure that their purchase will last for several years. The typical engine life of a Hyundai ranges from 250,000 to 400,000 kilometers. Your car’s engine might last 15 to 20 years in top condition, depending on how much you drive each day. However, there are a few things that you will need to do on your end to keep the engine of your automobile in good operating order if you want to be sure that it can survive that long.

Is the 2017 Elantra gas-efficient?

The Hyundai Elantra gets decent gas efficiency, although it trails the Honda Civic, a competitor, by a few mpg.

It receives an 8 out of 10 on our scale of greenness. (Learn more about our rating system for automobiles.)

The 2.0-liter inline-4 and 6-speed automatic that come standard on the Elantra SE, which is less well-equipped, achieve EPA ratings of 29 mpg city, 38 mpg highway, and 33 mpg combined.

The Elantra SE is available with a 6-speed manual, although it’s anticipated that American sales will be extremely low. According to the EPA, it gets 26/36/29 mpg.

The Elantra Limited’s gas mileage ratings drop to 28/37/32 mpg due to its heavier weight and extensive standard equipment list.

The Elantra Eco will be added to the roster later in the model year. With its 1.4-liter turbo-4 and 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, Hyundai claims it will achieve the greatest EPA ratings of the Elantra family, with a combined rating of 35 mpg. That is comparable to the greatest Honda Civic of the most recent model year, however the Civic wins that distinction almost everywhere whereas the Elantra only achieves it with a single model.

With a bigger 1.6-liter inline-4, the 2017 Elantra Sport achieves 26/33/29 mpg with an automatic transmission and 22/30/25 mpg with a manual transmission.

How do you reset a trip odmeter ?

The new owner of a 2020 Limited with the Nav/Sunroof/Heated steering wheel. My car did not come with any manuals (Nused). I have tried reading the PDF manuals from the SOA site, but I can't seem to find the information. I'm sure that it is possible. I would appreciate a few pointers/instructions as to how this is done. I can't RTFM (I have tried the PDF) and just can't find the answer. Thanks in advance. Silver-Blue

Like others have said, the reset button is behind the steering wheel to the left on the dashboard. It took me a while to locate it as well.

Bigger issue is that they owe you the manuals. Without them, you will NEVER get to understand and fully enjoy this car.

I agree with RocketMan20. You need those manuals. However in the meanwhile you can access them on Subaru's website. Just find the "Vehicle Resources" icon under the "For Owners" menu.

If the dealer won't come through, maybe you'd find a set at a wrecking yard. Reading the on line versions is a pita and won't help much if you're out and about. Besides, I find that if I'm sitting in the car waiting on somebody it's a good opportunity to get to know the car better. You might get the dealer to at least give you a credit if you have to find your own hard copies.

Down load the digital and keep a copy on your phone. If nothing else the search option for pdf can help you find towing instructions or jack placements for emergencies. Then, use you computer to write all the manuals to a DVD (2X) & flash drive, then keep one copy in your vehicle.

Don't feel bad. It took me a while to find it - not that I was looking closely. It's big enough. You can't miss it.

Rick, the only places I have seen reset or select switches on these is on the faring next to the speedometer (around the 7 o'clock pos.) or on the side of the trim panel on top of the gas tank. Should be something about it in the owner's manual.

If its anything like my 2014 Limited, there is a switch on the front side (not facing you while seated) of the left switch assembly. Easy reach with your left index finger and each press scrolls thru total miles, trip A, trip B, miles to empty, then back to total miles. At least by my memory and on my bike. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys I found it. It's on TOP of the left handle Bar right on top of it. All you have to do is with your left index finger is push it down to reset it.Gives you 2 choices. You guys are great Thanks again. Now I really feel stupied :wink

How do you setup the trip odometer to not reset after each time you turn off the engine? Suppose you take a 2 day vacation and would like to know how many miles you traveled total. My odometer resets each time I turn the truck off. I haven't been able to find the setting to keep it on.

Yes, that's correct, but I don't want it to reset unless I do it myself. Mine always resets each time I turn off the engine. There must be a way to turn the auto reset off, but I can't find it.

Scroll to the “Accumulated“ (which is the trip) and you can reset as you wish as mention earlier

Well I'll give it a try tomorrow, but again, I don't want it to reset. I want it to accumulate until I myself reset it. My SC shows 3 screens. Totals from day 1, totals from last fill up, and the trip odometer that I would think you could let it continue to accumulate until you manualy reset it. Yes, I can press the button to set it back to 0, but that is not what I am asking about. I don't want the milage to reset after each time I shut the engine off. As in taking a long trip and stopping for gas, shutting the SC off, filling up, and not having the odometer read 0 after starting up again. Maybe I'm not explaining this clearly.

Oh, I didn't realize that. I'll try it tomorrow. Thank you.

Ask a Trooper: Odometer can be replaced

set trip odometer

By Sgt. Troy Christianson

Question: I own a 1987 Toyota based RV.   The dashboard instrument cluster is pretty minimal. No tachometer, etc.   I have found a cluster from another Toyota truck that I’d like to install.   My problem is that my RV has about 112,000 miles on the odometer while the “new” odometer shows a bit over 210,000 miles. Is it legal to unwind the “new to me” odometer to match the actual miles on the RV and is there a person/place where I can get this done?

Answer: Minnesota State Statute 325E.14 Subd.6 says about replacing odometers, “Repair or replacement restriction. Nothing in this section shall prevent the service, repair, or replacement of an odometer, provided the mileage indicated thereon remains the same as before the service, repair, or replacement. Where the odometer is incapable of registering the same mileage as before such service, repair, or replacement, the odometer shall be adjusted to read zero and a written notice shall be attached to the left door frame of the vehicle by the owner or an agent specifying the mileage prior to repair or replacement of the odometer and the date on which it was repaired or replaced. No person shall remove or alter such a notice so affixed.”

Here’s what this means for your situation where your odometer is being replaced with a “used” odometer and unable to reflect the vehicle’s actual mileage. You would need to adjust this “new to you/used” odometer to reflect zero. The written notice shall be attached to the vehicle’s left door frame. I would advise keeping all documents and receipts on file of the work you had done and equipment purchased for this repair. It would probably be a wise idea to keep another set of the copied documents in your vehicle.
