How to spend a weekend in Busan, South Korea's seaside city

From its rocky perch above the shore, Haedong Yonggung Temple watches over the East Sea like a sentinel.

Situated on the southeastern tip of the Korean Peninsula, Busan is where Koreans come for a little rest and relaxation. The country’s second-largest metropolis is most famous for its long, sandy beaches, and its seaside culture seeps into all aspects of daily life, from a noticeably carefree, festive air to the seafood-rich cuisine. This energetic city is home to some of the most exciting attractions in the country, and to top it all off, it offers up nature in spades, with pine-covered mountains, countless miles of hiking trails and marine parks dotted with cliffs. Here’s how to plan your next getaway to Korea’s city on the sea.

Haeundae Beach is the city’s most famous seaside playground and an ideal place in which to grab a coffee and kick back.

Day one: turf and surf

Hiking is Korea’s national pastime, so start the day by joining the locals at Geumgang Park. Here, a precipitous ropeway takes visitors to the summit of Geumjeongsan Mountain — the fortress-topped massif that defines the skyline of the city — gliding over a blanket of pine trees and offering views of the densely packed urban world below. From the top, you can hike along the ridge for a few miles before dropping down and soaking up the serenity at Beomeosa, one of the great temples of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism founded in 678. Sit down at Sansugapsan, located just a short stroll from the temple’s main gate, for a meal of marinated duck washed down with a bottle or two of makgeolli, a milky rice wine served up on mountains throughout the country.

“South Korea's second-largest metropolis is most famous for its long, sandy beaches, and its seaside culture seeps into all aspects of daily life.”

After lunch, it’s time to head to the coast — and in Busan, that’s never far away. Just a 45-minute subway ride from Beomeosa, Haeundae is the city’s most famous seaside playground and an ideal place in which to grab a coffee and kick back with an azure stretch East Sea as the backdrop. (In the summer months, revellers gather here from far and wide, making this white-sand beach a prime people-watching spot, too.) If ready to resume rambling, head down to Mipo Port at the far end of the beach and board a cruise boat to the Oryukdo Islets, where you can take in the sleek high-rises of the city from a different point of view. Alternatively, saunter along the coastal path that snakes around Dongbaekseom Island, a rocky outcrop of pine trees on the west side of the beach.

While you’re in Haeundae, make sure to explore Bay 101 , a sprawling culture and arts complex that also includes a yacht club, restaurant, cafe, pub and store. Feel the day slip into night over a dinner of grilled beef before jumping into a taxi and cruising over Gwangan Diamond Bridge and shooting up to the observatory at the top of Hwangnyeongsan Mountain, where the city lights splay out like a thousand stars.

Jagalchi Market, in operation for over 600 years, is where locals and visitors alike can browse ...

Jagalchi Market, in operation for over 600 years, is where locals and visitors alike can browse the sea’s bounty.

Day two: markets and murals

The Nampo-dong neighbourhood, home to Busan’s main harbour and old downtown area, is an ideal gateway to your second day of urban  exploration. Here, attractions abound, from the secondhand book shops on Bosu Book Street to BIFF Square, the original site of the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) — Asia’s largest, and the city’s most important cultural event. Make sure to explore the alleys of the labyrinth-like Gukje Market, too, to pick up a few mementos. Hunger pangs, meanwhile, should be seen to across the street, at Jagalchi Market. In operation for over 600 years, this is Busan’s beating heart, where locals and visitors alike can browse the sea’s bounty in all its scaly, gilled and tentacled glory. A meal in one of the raw fish pavilions is not to be missed — just point to what you want and the fish will be dispatched and served up on the spot.

Just a short taxi ride away is the Gamcheon Culture Village, a former hillside shanty settled by Korean War refugees that’s now famous for its tiny, brightly painted houses and vivid murals. Enjoy a coffee and the million-dollar view at Cafe Avant Garde before wandering its backstreets.

Come dinnertime, nearby Bupyeong Kkangtong Market is a haven for no-nonsense, traditional Korean cuisine. There are scores of stalls cooking up everything from bindaetteok (mung bean cake) and guksu (Korean noodles) to pajeon (green onion pancake) and dwaeji gukbop (pork and rice soup), Busan’s savoury, signature dish. When it’s time to walk off the evening feast, amble over to Yongdusan Park and reach the top of Busan Tower for bird’s-eye-views of the harbour, mountains and electric cityscape.

Day three: baths and bars

Busan is famed for its spas, and to relax after a couple of days on your feet there’s Heosimcheong Spa , in the Oncheonjang neighbourhood. This huge complex is one of Asia’s largest naturally fed hot springs and offers hot, cold and outdoor baths. For lunch, treat yourself to a selection of the side dishes known as ‘Korean royal court food’ at Yewon Hanjeongsik, a short taxi ride away.

To discover Busan’s sophisticated side, make time to also see the gleaming cluster of high-rises in Centum City. Lose yourself in the luxurious expanse of Shinsegae , the world’s largest department store, or explore the Busan Cinema Center , home of the BIFF.

In the end, however, Busan is all about the beach, so jump back on the train and cruise over to nearby Gwangalli to watch the sun go down by the majestic Gwangan Diamond Bridge. A few blocks back is Seorae, a good place for a hearty, sizzling meal of tabletop-grilled pork, and after that, there’s no shortage of watering holes, from HQ Gwangan , the city’s best Western-style pub, to Galmegi Brewing, which serves locally produced craft beer. For something more upscale, Bar Di.Lan features a top-notch selection of whiskeys and wines — perfect to end the trip in style.

The Nampo-dong neighbourhood is dotted with many markets, including Gukje Market and Jagalchi Market.

Three street foods to try in Busan

1. Ssiat hotteok This is Busan’s take on hotteok, a popular Korean street delicacy. It consists of wheat-flour hot cakes stuffed with brown sugar, honey, cinnamon, pine nuts and sunflower and pumpkin seeds. It’s particularly good in the chilly winter months, but beware — the sweet, gooey inside can sometimes be magma-hot.

2. Eomuk   Any visitor to Busan will notice street vendors selling these fish paste ribbons on skewers all across the city. Savoury and satisfying, eomuk is the favourite food for Busanites on the go and is best when dipped in soy sauce. Make sure to get a cup of the eomuk broth, too; a few sips of it make everything right in the world, at least for a moment.

3. Bingsu Like most of the country, Busan can get downright tropical in the summer months, and one way locals beat the heat and humidity is by eating bingsu. This shaved ice dessert is served with sugary toppings such as chopped fruit, condensed milk, syrup and — most popularly — sweet red beans.

Three seaside attractions in Busan

1. Tajeongdae Resort Park Situated at the far end of Yeongdo Island, Tajeongdae Resort Park is where the sea meets the sea — violently: strolling under a canopy of pines, visitors can watch the waves explode on gargantuan rock forms. This is nature in action, just a 15-minute taxi ride from Nampo-dong.

2. Haedong Yonggung Temple From its rocky perch above the shore — where the ancient stone of the Korean peninsula makes its last stand before the sea — Haedong Yonggung Temple watches over the East Sea like a sentinel. This is Busan’s second-most-famous Buddhist temple, with an ornate yet rugged beauty.

3. Songdo marine cable car In recent years, Songdo, Busan’s first official municipal beach, has undergone a remarkable makeover. This includes a state-of-the-art cable-car that carries visitors across the water to Amnam Park, where they can enjoy panoramic views of the city.

British Airways offers regular nonstop flights to Seoul. From there, Busan is just a quick connection. The city is served by a world-class public transport system, and taxis are also plentiful and inexpensive.

Day-trip around Busan by Subway

  • Tag etc Shopping Tour
  • Date 09/13/2021

Busan is a city of beautiful beaches, glamorous night scenes, and modern history. As the second largest metropolitan area in Korea, it was announced as Lonely Planet’s number 1 destination in “10 Best places to visit in Asia in 2018”. The biggest advantage of touring Busan is that most of the main attractions are easily accessible by subway. Travelers with a tight budget can purchase a one-day pass for unlimited rides on Busan subways within the same day. With a ticket in hand, set out for a full day of fun and delicious food in Busan!

Busan subway one-day pass

The subway system in Busan consists mainly of six different lines: Lines 1 to 4, Busan-Gimhae LRT connecting Busan to Gimhae, and the Donghae Line covering the coast from Seo-myeon through Haeundae to Ilgwang. Most travelers arrive in Busan through Gimhae International Airport, Busan Station or Busan Bus Terminal, which are connected to Gimhae International Airport Station (Busan-Gimhae LRT), Busan Station (Busan Subway Line 1), and Nopo Station (Busan Subway Line 1) respectively. The one-day pass allows unlimited rides on the same day of purchase for all subway lines except the Busan-Gimhae LRT and Donghae Line. Tickets cost 5,000 won each, and are available at all ticket vending machines located inside of the city's subway stations. The ticket machines offer assistance in Korean, English, Japanese, and Chinese for the convenience of international travelers. To purchase a one-day pass, simply select the designated button at the bottom right-hand side of the machine. However, keep in mind that these machines only accept payment by cash in the form of 1,000 won bills and 500 won and 100 won denomination coins. If you happen to run out of smaller bills, simply ask for an exchange at the station office or use a money exchange machine to break down larger bills.

Subway map for an easy day-trip in Busan

Major attractions on line 1, 1 busan old town tour nampo station & jagalchi station.

There are a number of large markets along Busan Subway Line 1. The most famous markets are Jagalchi Market , the largest seafood market in Busan; Gukje Market , which provides imported merchandise through Busan Port; the areas around Nampo-dong Street, Bupyeong (Kkangtong) Market , and BIFF Square , which attract people with their many unique food stalls and stores to check out.

Must-eats street foods of Bupyeong Kkangtong Market

Bupyeong Kkangtong Market’s top three foods that are popular among foreigners are yubu (fried tofu) pockets, ssiat hotteok (sugar-filled seeded griddlecake), and bibim dangmyeon (spicy glass noodles). Yubu pockets are served in a warm seafood and vegetable that has just the right combination of sweet and salty. With a filling of only vegetable and noodles, the dish can be enjoyed by all. Another dish great for filling up on is bibim dangmyeon. This simple dish includes glass noodles, sliced fish cakes and vegetables, topped with a spicy sauce. If you’re looking for something a little sweeter, try the ssiat hotteok. This sugary, warm pancake is fried on a hot griddle and then filled with a variety of seeds and black sugar. Once you have a taste, you are going to be craving for more.

2 Santorini of Busan! Toseong Station (Line 1) – Gamcheon Culture Village

Gamcheon Culture Village feels like a village out of a fairytale and is only a 20-minute walk from Toseong Station, Exit 8. This terraced village is on a mountainside overlooking the ocean, giving it the nickname “The Santorini of Busan.” The neighborhood is filled with small galleries, craft shops, and cafés with amazing views, perfect for new discoveries. The colorful buildings also make for outstanding photos. To make the most of your time, stop by the Gamcheon Culture Village Information Center to purchase a stamp tour map (2,000 won / available in English, Japanese, and Chinese) before you head out!

3 Little China in Busan! Busan Station (Line 1) Chinatown

The entrance to Busan’s Chinatown greets its tourists with a large red gate, giving it the nickname Shanghai Street. Other Chinese-influenced aspects of the area include uniquely designed street lamps and buildings. The backstreets are lined with Chinese restaurants, selling everything from Chinese donuts and dumplings to fortune cookies. Chinatown is located just across the street from Busan Station, making it convenient to visit if you’re in the area.

Major attractions on Line 2

1 walking on water kyungsung univ.•pukyung nat’l univ. station (line 2) – oryukdo skywalk & igidae park.

After a short 15-minute taxi ride from Kyungsung Univ.•Pukyung Nat’l Univ. Station of Line 2, you will soon arrive at Oryukdo Skywalk . This skywalk is favored by many who wish to experience walking above the sea. The floor of the skywalk is completely made of glass and you can take in the unobstructed view and ocean breeze of the sea. Nearby attractions include Igidae Park , Galmaet-gil & Haeparang-gil Trails for enjoyable trekking along the coast.

2 Shopping and entertainment meet! Centum City (Centum City Station)

Visitors can also enjoy the delicious tastes of some of Korea’s most famous restaurants. In addition to shopping, visitors can enjoy all aspects of entertainment, from a movie theater to a large bookstore, an indoor ice skating rink and even a jimjilbang , a Korean-style spa. The nearby Busan Cinema Center , the venue of Busan International Film Festival , is also worth a visit.

3 Glowing skyscrapers! Dongbaek Station (Line 2) – The Bay 101 & Dongbaekseom Island

Busan is on the coast and has many beautiful nightscapes. The Bay 101 , in particular, has become one of the hottest places for viewing Busan’s skyline at night. The facility is a yacht club equipped with a café, gallery, restaurants and more. The outdoor tables on the rooftop terrace, open spring through fall, serve as the perfect place to enjoy a delicious meal or drink with friends. Nurimaru APEC House, where the 2005 APEC summit meeting was held, is also located nearby on Dongbaekseom Island , perfect for an evening walk.

  • The MICHELIN Guide Extends To Busan, South Korea’s Second Largest City

Confirming South Korea as a strong culinary destination, the MICHELIN Guide extends its coverage to Busan. Busan’s culinary potential, with its popular traditional cuisine and natural marine environment seduced the inspectors of the Guide. This upcoming MICHELIN Guide selection will be unveiled in February 2024.

busan tourism organization

Michelin is pleased to announce the arrival of the MICHELIN Guide in Busan, South Korea’s second largest city located in the southern coast of the country. The MICHELIN Guide Busan selection will be unveiled together with the Seoul one in February 2024. The coveted MICHELIN Guide will recognize the best culinary talents and restaurants this destination has shown, based on the famously anonymous inspector team’s evaluation.

Known for its diverse culinary scene, highlighting among many local products, fresh seafood, Busan’s food culture provides a positively extraordinary edge that immediately captivates the taste buds of the most conscientious epicurean, both locally and abroad.

“We are thrilled to welcome Busan to the MICHELIN Guide family” said Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guide.” Busan has a charm of its own, with a natural marine environment and smooth supply of food ingredients through its famous port. It is definitely a city with high expectations for growth as a gourmet city. We are grateful to put the spotlight on Busan's gourmet culture and we hope it will be a great opportunity to promote the culinary landscape of Korea to the world together with Seoul.”

With the aim to search for exceptional gastronomical experiences around the world, the MICHELIN Guide inspectors have found Busan to be a city that presents a vibrant culinary complexity which truly reflects the uniqueness of South Korea's food culture. The MICHELIN Guide has long been dedicated to fostering a culture of outstanding travels and recommending unforgettable experiences accessible to all diners on all budgets; it is thanks to this promise along with its independent and anonymous inspectors as well as its unique and universal methodology that the MICHELIN Guide is still at the forefront of all restaurant guides.

The MICHELIN Guide Seoul, first published in 2016, has been demonstrating full of flavors and passion from year to year with a total of 176 restaurants, including 35 MICHELIN Starred restaurants (including 2 three Stars establishments) and 57 Bib Gourmand ones in 2023. Since its debut, the MICHELIN Guide Seoul has highlighted a variety of seasonal and specialty dishes, from traditional restaurants to various genres, showcasing the diverse culinary culture of Seoul and contributing to the destination’ shine, with the observed increase of visitors for K-food tourism.

Heong-joon Park, Mayor of Busan Metropolitan City and Jung-sil Lee, President of Busan Tourism Organization is proud to support the expansion of the MICHELIN Guide to Busan, and the graced their presence at the Debut Announcement event.

Heong-joon Park, the mayor of Busan Metropolitan City, stated, "Busan is evaluated as the core of Korea's national tourism strategy, with abundant tourist content such as the ocean close to the city, diverse festivals throughout the seasons, and cultural assets with history and stories. The publication of the MICHELIN Guide in Busan, which is internationally recognized as a restaurant guide, will be an important milestone in propelling us towards becoming a global tourism city by integrating food, culture, and tourism".

Joeng-sil Lee, the President of Busan Tourism Organization, expressed expectations that the publication of the MICHELIN Guide in Busan, which is a rigorous global restaurant rating system, will naturally induce a market economy in the city's culinary industry and contribute to job creation and quality improvement. He also stated, "Busan Tourism Organization will drive the Global Gourmet Tourism City Busan project until 2028 to widely promote Busan as a global gourmet city and make efforts to establish a self-sustaining structure for the activation of gourmet tourism industry".

As it’s the case in all the destinations it covers, the MICHELIN Guide Busan will highlight the diverse gastronomy of the city and recommend the best restaurant around. The team of anonymous and independent inspectors, former professionals of the industry, will assess the local restaurants, applying its historical and universal methodology, based on 5 criteria: - the quality of the ingredients; - the mastery of cooking; - the harmony of flavours; - the personality of the chef through the cuisine; and - the consistency both over time and across the entire menu.

The full selection of the MICHELIN Guide Seoul and Busan 2024 will be unveiled in February 2024 during the MICHELIN Guide Ceremony and the selection will be available on the MICHELIN Guide website as well as on the free mobile App for iOS and Android.

Busan Tourism Organization Opens its Doors

busan tourism organization

BUSAN, South Korea — The Busan Tourism Organization, now in charge of tourism initiatives, has officially opened for business. Tourism has been a long-cherished business of Busan, and with the tourism organization, Busan has prepared a stepping stone to becoming a luxury tourism city.

The tourism organization will work on tourism industry development, tourism marketing in Korea and other countries, developing tourism resources, operating Arpina Youth Hostel and Busan City Tour Bus, MICE industry development, fostering tourism talents, and promoting the Busan City consignment business.

The first CEO of the Busan Tourism Organization is Yeom Kyeong-seob, former vice president of the Korea Tourism Organization. Lineup of 2024 Busan One Asia Festival Concert Revealed

SEOUL, April 4 (Yonhap) -- Busan City has unveiled the full lineup for the 'Big Concert' of the 2024 Busan One Asia Festival (2024 BOF) on the 4th.

In its 8th edition this year, BOF will feature performances by artists such as 'god,' 'Super Junior-D&E,' 'ZEROBASEONE,' 'BOYNEXTDOOR,' and 'n.SSign.'

Hosted by Busan City and organized by Busan Tourism Organization, this event has traditionally been held in October. However, starting from this year, the festival will be moved up to June.

The decision to change the festival date was made in response to continuous requests from the tourism industry in Busan, citing difficulties in booking flights and accommodations due to the concentration of large festivals in the second half of the year.

The '2024 BOF' will take place on June 8th and 9th.

On the 8th, the 'BOF Big Concert' featuring global K-pop artists will be held at the Busan Asiad Main Stadium, while on the 9th, the 'Park Concert' for Busan citizens will be held at Hwamyeong Ecological Park.

The '2024 BOF Big Concert' will feature leading K-pop artists representing the Hallyu wave.

Shim Jae-min, general director of the Busan City Cultural and Sports Department, stated, "'BOF Big Concert' is a festival where legendary 1st and 2nd generation idols and trending idol groups come together, providing an opportunity for both domestic and international tourists and citizens of Busan to enjoy together." He further added, "By holding the festival in June for the first time this year, we aim to deliver even more special music and memories."

Official ticket sales for the concert will be conducted through YES24, starting from April 19th.

Discover South Korea's lesser-known past with a history tour through Busan

With buzzing markets, ancient fortresses, hilltop villages and a Korean War legacy, Busan’s multi-layered past can be best discovered through one of several tours.

As a country with a richly political history, a visit to Busan is not complete without a guided tour. With so many must-visit monuments, museums and memorial parks, a heritage tour through Busan helps travellers discover more about the fascinating remnants and relics of the city's past.   Here, we delve into the historical tours on offer in South Korea's second city.

For history buffs, the Dongnae Walking Tour explores some of Busan’s oldest sites while also illuminating its past. Now a sprawling residential district, Dongnae was once a walled citadel and battle location during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592. Today, the neighbourhood is home to scores of historic spots, all of which are best discovered on foot.

This tour begins with a stroll through the green and serene environs of Bokcheon Ancient Tombs Park , which hosts over 40 burial mounds dating back to the Gaya confederacy (AD 532-42). After Bokcheon, you’ll head along the rebuilt walls of the Dongnae Eupseong Fortress, where your guide will highlight the heart-rending details of the battle that took place there in the early days of the Imjin War. After checking out a miniature model of the walled town at the Dongnae Eupseong History Hall, you’ll make stops at the colourfully reconstructed Dongnae-bu Magistrate’s Office and Hyanggyo Local Confucian School, before finally entering the hallowed grounds of Chungnyeolsa Shrine. This picturesque complex brings the area’s sobering history into sharp focus and is the ideal place to pay your respects to those daring Korean fighters who resisted foreign aggression over 400 years ago.

Gaya confederacy era burial mounds.

Busan’s original harbour district oozes history, and the Nampo-dong Tour   uncovers the neighbourhood's storied past by delving into the three street markets that make up its core. It all begins with Jagalchi Market, the 600-year-old fish market that defines Busan. A stroll down its frenzied concourse is more than just an assault on the senses, it’s also a portal into yesteryear. Next up is Gukje Market, which blossomed into a gargantuan foreign goods exchange during the Korean War, when Busan was flooded with both refugees and products from abroad, as documented in the hit 2014 film   Ode to My Father . The final stop is neighbouring Bupyeong Kkangtong Market, where, over anecdotes from your guide, you can graze on street food favourites such as   tteokbokki ,   eomuk (fish cake),   guksu (noodles) and   bindaetteok (mung bean pancake).

People passing through Bupyeong Kkangtong Market.

Just a stone’s throw from Nampo-dong is one of Busan’s newer and most recognisable landmarks: the Gamcheon Cultural Village Tour lets visitors soak up the splendours of this hamlet while also providing historical context to complement the community’s multihued charm. Originally settled by war refugees, this hillside warren of narrow alleys and vibrantly painted tiny homes has become one of the city’s most popular destinations, and with good reason: the views alone are worth the trip, and the cluster of galleries, cafes, and splashy murals will surely set your heart aloft. It’s the history, however, that binds it all together, and the tour guide will describe the details of just how this village came to be — how hardship, along with a shared interest in shamanism — helped to create the community that now occupies the most famous mountainside in the city.

While the origins of the Gamcheon Cultural Village are reminders of the impact that the Korean War (1950-1953) had on locals, the UN Memorial Cemetery Tour drives home the courage and sacrifice made by so many in the international community. The only site of its kind in the world, the cemetery honours the UN soldiers and aid workers from 21 countries who were killed in action during the Korean War. Originally holding 11,000 graves, most of the fallen have since been repatriated to their native lands. That said, 2,1300 remain, including 886 from the UK.

The UN Memorial Cemetery Tour in Busan is the only site of its kind in the world which honours those killed in action during the Korean War.

Experiencing the UN Memorial Cemetery through a guided tour helps give a backstory and purpose to all of those names on the headstones and memorial walls. The tour guide will possess deep knowledge of the contributions that each of the participating nations brought to the conflict. Moreover, once you leave the cemetery and step back into the thriving, frenetic city of Busan, you’ll understand the price paid by many around the world to help make South Korea the free and prosperous nation it is today.

Three must-visit museums in Busan

Busan Museum:   Situated next to the UN Memorial Cemetery, the Busan Museum is the city’s premier collection of artefacts, home to over 45,000 locally-gathered pieces.

Bokcheon Museum:   Acting as a companion piece to Dongnae’s Bokcheon Ancient Tomb Park, Bokcheon Museum houses armour, weapons, clothing, tools and pottery, all unearthed from the adjacent burial mounds.

Provisional Capital Memorial Hall:   Busan was the nation’s provisional capital during the Korean War, with Provisional Capital Memorial Hall acting as President Syngman’s Rhee’s personal residence. Today, it serves as a reminder of that turbulent time, with mementos, as well as a photo gallery documenting those dark days of conflict.

Plan your trip

Korean Air and Asiana Airlines both offer daily nonstop flights from Heathrow to Seoul’s Incheon Airport. From Incheon Airport, it’s just an hour flight south to Busan. You can also reach Busan via train. The KTX Express Train takes 2.5 hours from Seoul to Busan.

Busan, South Korea: How one city is raising the stakes in the tourism race

By Meca Miciano -    Sep 14, 2023 Credit : GMI Post

Located at South Korea’s southern tip, Busan is blessed with a sub-tropical climate, which has made the country’s second-largest city a popular year-round destination for millions of local tourists. Apart from its beaches that get packed during the summer, the port city offers other attractions and events, like the Busan International Film Festival, the largest in Asia.

busan tourism organization

Having attracted 3.2 million international tourists in 2022, according to figures from Visit Korea, Seoul remains the country’s largest tourism revenue generator. While Busan has seen more tourist arrivals, the Busan Tourism Organization has stepped up efforts to promote the city’s hidden gems to the world.

“With the alleviation of coronavirus cases, the number of foreign tourists visiting Busan has increased rapidly. By June 2023, the number went up by nearly 500% compared to the same period last year. It is expected that more than 1.8 million people will visit Busan by the end of this year,” said BTO CEO and President Jung-Sil Lee .

The organization wants to highlight the city’s historical, cultural and natural attractions, like its Buddhist temples, as well as its food markets.

“BTO’s short-term priorities include making Busan a global “work-cation” city and a tourism city that offers tourists a full experience. We are focusing on promoting and developing content such as gastronomic tourism, night tourism, and marine leisure sports by utilizing Busan's beautiful beaches and coasts, historical heritage, delicious food and seafood, cityscapes and night views, and cultural and artistic events. Through these efforts, we are seeking to generate fresh and enriching experiences for visitors,” Lee said.

Busan is no longer a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. Thanks to the Busan Tourism Organization's dedication and the increasing interest of travelers, this coastal gem has risen to prominence on the global tourism stage.

The past and future of Busan as an international convention city

The Past and Future of Busan as an International Convention City

Having attracted and hosted countless international conventions, Busan has grown into one of the world’s top international convention cities. Ranked 4th in Asia and 12th in the world, according to the Union of International Associations’ rankings of international convention cities, Busan continues to raise its status as a major MICE (meeting, incentives, convention, and exhibitions) city. The unique appeal of Busan’s natural environment, top-class convention infrastructure, and tourism industry is colorfully blended into the city’s MICE marketing, with the outcome being positive and consistent. Busan is an ideal setting for international conventions. Let’s explore its milestones and future possibilities.

Beginnings as an International Convention City

The Past and Future of Busan as an International Convention City

Nurimaru APEC House (Source: Busan Tourism Organization)

With the 2001 opening of the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center (BEXCO), featuring over 46,500 ㎡ of exhibition space and 53 meeting rooms, Busan made a successful foray into the international convention industry. The success of APEC South Korea 2005 held in Busan catapulted the city to the status of a major international convention city in Asia. In the same year, the Busan Convention Bureau was established to ramp up the city’s MICE efforts. Other notable large-scale international conventions held in Busan that brought it to global attention as an ideal MICE city include the 2009 OECD World Forum and the 2012 Lions Clubs International Convention.

In November 2019, Busan hosted the ASEAN-Republic of Korea Commemorative Summit for the second time in a row since 2014. Some 10,000 attendees, including heads of state, governmental ministers, and corporate representatives from countries in the ASEAN region, attended the event, where pledges for exchanges were made in various areas. Busan’s status as a hub for ASEAN exchanges was cemented when it also hosted the 1st Mekong-Republic of Korea Summit, held back-to-back with the 2019 ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit. In December of the same year, the 2019 International Diabetes Federation Congress was also successfully hosted in Busan, where a rare scene involving some 3,000 event visitors running through the city was created in a nocturnal marathon held to promote a sense of solidarity.

Rising to the Challenges of the New Normal

The Past and Future of Busan as an International Convention City

Busan One Asia Festival (Source: Busan Tourism Organization)

Beginning in early 2020, Busan has consistently adhered to Korea’s COVID-19 strategy and is hosting safe events during the pandemic. Major international events scheduled for this year include landmark events such as the Busan One Asia Festival in October, and the 30th Anniversary World Congress on Biosensors in November. In the face of the coronavirus pandemic, a wide range of non-contact events made possible thanks to meeting technologies are taking place, and Busan’s MICE industries are cooperating to overcome the crisis. Busan’s safety in the midst of the pandemic is attested by its membership in the International Safe Community Network, a noteworthy feat as Busan was the first metropolitan-scale city in the world to be granted this level of recognition.

Systematic Preparations for the World’s Most Important Conventions

The Past and Future of Busan as an International Convention City

2026 International Federation of Automatic Control World Congress (Source: Busan Tourism Organization)

The future of Busan as a city of international conventions is bright. Having worked hard to earn the opportunity to host such large-scale international events as the 2021 World Team Table Tennis Championships, the 2022 International Microscopy Congress, and the 2026 International Federation of Automatic Control World Congress, Busan is now preparing for these events as its confirmed host city. This achievement didn’t happen overnight; it required tremendous effort from the city to continuously improve its appeal as a host city. Thanks to its advanced MICE infrastructure, which includes an attractive selection of convention centers, hotels, unique venues, and support systems, Busan is ready to become the world’s top international convention city.

Busan’s potential for growth as an international convention city is infinite. As its milestones indicate, the city checks all the right boxes: the passion, ability, and infrastructure needed to provide the best possible international convention experience. Busan will continuously endeavor to attract and successfully host international conferences in these changing times, to become a proud and world-renowned international convention city.

Busan: Three New Unique Venues

busan tourism organization

BUSAN, 22 February 2022: Busan Metropolitan City and Busan Tourism Organization selected new event venues through document screening and on-site inspection.

Busan’s leading MICE venues, Busan X the Sky, P.ARK and Busan e-Sports Arena, have been officially registered as the 2021 Busan Unique Venues.

Having conference facilities and infrastructure that can conduct MICE events of various sizes, the venues are expected to greatly contribute to attracting domestic and foreign MICE events to Busan.

busan tourism organization

Busan Metropolitan City and Busan Tourism Organization (BTO) received applications for 2021 Busan Unique Venue Recruitment from 24 to 31 December 2021 and conducted document screening and on-site inspection. and on 18 January 2022, The three selected venues are:

  • Busan X the Sky;
  • Busan e-Sports Arena.

For venues that passed the document screening, the MICE Industry Division of Busan and the Convention Bureau of BTO (CVB) conducted the on-site inspection. The evaluation criteria are Busan-related characteristics, event hosting experiences, suitability for unique venues, and foreign language capacity. To be selected as a Unique Venue, a score of 80 or more should be obtained from each of the two agencies.

Busan Unique Venue Selection Criteria

* Specific characteristics related to Busan, such as history, culture, and art

* Other than the existing MICE-specialized meeting facilities (except conventions, wedding halls, and hotels)

* Availability of hosting meetings of more than 30 people

* Availability of renting and eating indoors as well as operating at all times

Busan X the Sky received high marks from the reception capacity of fewer than 100 people and the experience of hosting various MICE events such as G-STAR 2021 Welcome Reception.

P.ARK got a pass for indoors and outdoors-combined facility capacity that can hold medium-to-large-scale events with more than 1,000 people.

Busan e-Sports Arena received high scores for its location in the old downtown area, which lacks meeting facilities, and the potential to attract MICE, reflecting interest in e-Sports, which has recently spread mainly in Greater China.

Busan Metropolitan City and BTO classified the Unique Venues into three stages of “new, growing, and matured” and plan to strengthen direct support through phased support, starting this year. The practical support measures are as follows:

Unique Venue’s self-promotion and marketing subsidy. A support system through an open call for 17 existing venues and new Unique Venues in 2021. Subsidy for publicity costs such as advertisement, promotion, and printed materials B-Unique Venue promotional content production including responsive e-book and Unique Venue promo video. Providing education and consulting for each phase.

An official of BTO said: “In the contact-free society due to COVID-19, the demand for tourism and MICE for Unique Venue is remarkably increasing.” “They are valuable assets for attracting and hosting domestic and international MICE events in Busan. We will spare no effort to lay the foundation for holding events at Unique Venues and continuously discover new venues so that we can practically support them,” he emphasized.

Busan has been discovering unique facilities (Unique Venues) that present the unique characteristics of Busan and actively utilizing them to attract MICE events. In particular, 80% or more organizers of the international conference in 2021, participated in the Multiple District Unique Venue Competition Project, said that they were satisfied with the Unique Venues. This year, the Unique Venue support will be expanded.

In fact, 93% of the organizers of the international conference, participated in Haeundae International Conference Complex (HAEVENUE) Unique Venue Competition Project last year, said that they were satisfied with the 2020 International Symposium on Fish Nutrition and Feeding held at Nurimaru. And 92.5% of them were satisfied with the Federation of Immunological Societies of Asia-Oceania (FIMSA 2021) held at MUSEUM 1.

Also, the 128 th Korean Chemical Society Symposium, General Assembly and Equipment Exhibition (Busan X the Sky Observatory), and the 98 th Symposium of the Korean Society for Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine(BEXCO) recorded satisfaction of exceeding 80%.
