In October 2022, the UAE introduced the Green visa to attract and support foreign freelancers and self-employed individuals in the UAE. The Green visa grants holders residency for five years and, unlike the standard UAE work visa, does not require employer sponsorship.

The Green visa has additional benefits, such as the ability to sponsor immediate relatives to relocate to the UAE, a six-month grace period upon visa expiry or cancellation, and a simplified application process.

The documents required to apply for a Green visa vary depending on the applicant's work category. However, standard required documents include a valid employment contract or self-employment permit from the MoHRE, proof of education, and proof of sufficient income during the applicant's stay in the UAE.

Golden visa

The UAE’s Golden visa is an extended residence permit that allows professionals with exceptional qualifications to live, work, and study in the UAE for 10 years without a local sponsor. People who qualify for the Golden visa are usually doctors, scientists, athletes, inventors, artists, healthcare staff, or others with select qualifications.

Golden visa holders enjoy various benefits, such as access to exclusive health insurance packages and the ability to sponsor unlimited immediate family members and support staff. They can also spend unlimited time outside the UAE without impacting the validity of their visa.

The list of supporting documents for a Golden visa varies depending on the applicant’s background. An eligibility quiz on the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) website clarifies whether or not a person qualifies for the Golden visa.

Who is eligible to obtain a UAE work visa?

Anyone over 18 can legally work as an expat in the UAE, provided the employer and employee meet the MoHRE’s standards . Below is a general overview of the MoHRE’s conditions for working in the UAE:

  • The employer has a valid operating license
  • The employer has no violations
  • The employee’s work corresponds to the nature of the company’s operations
  • The employee has at least a high school diploma

There is no maximum age limit for applicants, but employers must pay an additional AED5,000 (US$1,360) fee every two years for employing workers over 65 years old.

Requirements for obtaining a UAE employment visa

UAE employment visa requirements vary, depending on the visa category. Below is a general list of the required supporting documents for a UAE work visa application:

  • Original passport and copy
  • Passport-sized photos in line with UAE requirements
  • Emirates ID card
  • Entry permit from the Ministry of Labor (MoL)
  • Medical certificate issued by a government-approved health center in the UAE
  • Copies of the employee’s academic qualifications with authorization from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a UAE Embassy in the employee’s home country
  • Documents from the employer, such as their commercial license and company card

The employer is responsible for the work visa application process and related costs, while the employee is responsible for submitting documents for the residence permit.

How to get a UAE work visa: 10 steps

It’s helpful to think of the UAE work visa application process in three stages: getting an employment entry visa, applying for an Emirates ID, and obtaining a residence visa and work visa. We outline the stages and their steps below.

Stage 1: Obtain an employment entry visa in the UAE

1. apply for an entry visa quota approval.

If the applicant resides and works in one of the UAE’s 46 free zones, the employer must apply for a UAE free zone visa , which requires visa quota approval from the Ministry of Labor.

Free zone employers have a quota restriction on work visas, which vary across free zones. For example, the quota in Dubai is one visa per nine square meters of office space. If an employer reaches their quota, they can move to a larger office or apply for a quota upgrade.

2. Submit a signed employment contract

Upon receiving quota approval, the employer must submit a signed work contract to the MoL for approval. The contract must be in English, Arabic, and the employee’s native language if it differs from either language.

3. Submit a work visa application and apply for an entry visa

The employer must submit their work visa application for approval. At this stage, the MoL confirms that the sponsor is a registered UAE corporate entity and determines if any unemployed UAE citizens can fill the vacant position instead of the foreign applicant. The MoL must approve the work visa application before issuing an entry visa.

4. Receive an employment entry visa

Upon approval of the work visa application, the MoL issues an employment entry visa, also known as a pink visa. The entry visa is valid for two months for standard and Green visa holders and six months with multiple entries for Golden visa holders. It allows the employee to legally enter the UAE to formalize their work visa and apply for a residence visa.

The employee receives the entry visa upon arrival to the UAE. If they cannot travel to the UAE within 60 days, they may apply for a one-time extension. If the employee is already in the UAE on a different visa, they must apply for a visa ‘change of status’ or do a ‘border run’ to obtain the entry visa upon arrival.

Upon entry, the employee must begin collecting supporting documents for their residence visa application, such as an Emirates ID and health certificate, while the employer submits additional documents to officiate the work visa.

Stage 2: Apply for an Emirates ID

Foreign nationals entering or relocating to the UAE for work must get an Emirates ID, which is necessary for the required medical screening. The ID directly links to the expat’s residence visa and serves as an everyday identification document in the UAE in place of a passport.

To apply for an Emirates ID, the employee must visit an Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA) center with their passport and entry visa and provide biometrics, such as their fingerprints and a photograph.

Stage 3: Obtain a work visa and residence visa in the UAE

6. get a medical checkup.

All applicants must receive medical screening at a government-approved clinic in the UAE. The results of the checkup are required for the residence visa application.

7. Submit a labor contract

As a part of the UAE work visa formalization, employers must upload their employee’s labor contract to the MoL website within 14 days of receiving the employee’s medical screening results.

8. Get health insurance

Health insurance is mandatory for all expat employees in the UAE. In some Emirates, such as Abu Dhabi and Dubai, employers must provide health insurance for employees and their families.

If a foreign employee resides in Sharjah or one of the northern Emirates, they must purchase their own health insurance plan. The MoL does not issue or renew work visas for employees without a valid health insurance card.

9. Receive a work visa and begin payroll

After completing the above steps, it takes about five days for the MoL to grant an official work visa. Upon receiving the work visa, employees can legally begin working in the UAE, and employers can start administering payroll through the official UAE system.

10. Receive a residence visa

Once all of the above items are in place, the employee must submit the required documents with their application for a residence visa. If the applicant hasn’t received their official Emirates ID, an application receipt will suffice. The residence visa is valid for two years and is renewable.

All expats need a residence visa to live in the UAE, and the MoL lists the employee’s work visa as part of the residence visa. Expats also need a residence visa for completing formalities, such as opening bank accounts, registering a car, and opening a PO box.

Considerations before obtaining a work visa in the UAE

One of the unique considerations for acquiring a standard work visa in the UAE is that every applicant requires sponsorship from a legally incorporated entity in the UAE. This requirement complicates the process for foreign companies interested in hiring talent in the UAE.

How to Apply for a Work Visa in Dubai

One of the key things to understand about working in the UAE is that the work visa or employment permit is provided by the employer. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) issues work permits in Dubai. Your employer has to apply for this permit, which is then converted into a valid residency visa. Once you get the residence visa, the work permit allows you to enter the UAE and work there. This permit is valid for two months. During this time, your employer will have to arrange formalities like medical testing, Emirates ID, Labour Card and residency visa. 

The residency visa primarily is a clear piece of evidence that you are sponsored by the organisation and that it has paid for your work permit, medical testing and Emirates ID.

Once you receive your residence visa, you can sponsor your family and bring them into the country.  This includes single mothers as well. In addition, men sponsored by wives in UAE can also get a work permit.

Who can apply for a work visa in Dubai?

Application for Dubai work visa

Three conditions decide whether or not expats need a Dubai working visa. You’ll need one if: 

  • You have been hired while you are still in your country
  • A job opportunity comes up when you are in Dubai on a visit visa or tourist visa 
  • You are already working in Dubai and want to switch companies

In the first instance, MoHRE and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation have set up centres outside the country to facilitate this process. 

In the second instance, you can obtain your Dubai work permit by exiting the UAE. You don’t necessarily have to fly back home. Airlines such as Air Arabia and FlyDubai offer you a ‘visa run’ facility in which you can stopover at a neighbouring country (such as Oman) till you obtain a work permit in Dubai. 

The hiring company can also avail of the ‘Change Status’ process by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs (GDFRA) in Dubai. In this scenario, you do not have to leave the country to obtain the work permit in Dubai. 

In the third instance, you also get a new work permit to join a new company. As per Article 1 of Ministerial Decree No. 766 of 2015, an employee whose contract was terminated because of expiry of contract is eligible for a new work permit in Dubai, provided they are able to secure a new career opportunity.

As per the amended UAE’s Labour Law No. 8 of 1980, you need to be at least 18 years of age to be eligible for the work permit in Dubai. 

Dubai Work Permit Visa Requirements

You need the following to obtain your work permit in Dubai:

  • Photograph against a white background
  • Copy of passport (which is valid for at least six months)
  • Copy of education certificates required for the job (this has to be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in your country)

Medical Testing

Along with the Dubai work permit visa requirements, you also need to take medical fitness tests at government-approved health centres in Dubai. This is necessary both for new work visa applicants as well as renewals. You will have to take a blood test and get an x-ray of your chest to screen for pulmonary tuberculosis.

Note that certain occupations in Dubai also require that you test negative for Hepatitis B and syphilis. The best way to go about this is to have these tests done in your country to save your time. This is because if you happen to have any of these communicable diseases, you will be required to leave the country.

When applying for an employment visa, there are numerous factors that need to be considered. This process can take up to 6 months, so it is important that all requirements are met before submitting the application.

The United Arab Emirates is an amazing place to visit, but it might be even better for your career. The UAE has become the world’s second-largest exporter of oil in the last decade. Now, with a growing middle-class population and a booming economy, the UAE has over 1,000 positions in its job market available to foreign nationals.

UAE Employment Visa

The UAE Employment visa is a temporary residence visa issued to all expatriates who wish to work in the United Arab Emirates. It allows an expat to stay and work in the UAE for a period of up to three years. However, if you have been working in the UAE for more than 3 years on a Labour Card sponsored by your employer then it may be possible that you can extend your stay with this visa.

UAE Employment Visa Procedure

Your employer must apply for a Residence Visa for you from the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs ( GDRFA ) of the emirate where you are working once you enter the UAE with the authorization you got from the MOHRE .

When your application is granted, the GDRFA will stamp an Employment Visa in your passport and provide you with an Emirates ID, which will be valid for the same period as the visa. You’ll also get a Labour Card, which proves to the authorities that you’re allowed to work in the UAE.

The United Arab Emirates, usually known as the UAE or the Emirates, is a popular expat destination due to its comparatively easy visa requirements when compared to the neighboring Middle Eastern nations.   • A passport-size photograph, as required by the UAE.
  • Copies of your academic credentials Your credentials must be approved by the UAE Embassy or Consulate in your country, as well as your nation’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • A medical certificate from a government-approved health institution in the United Arab Emirates.

UAE Entry Visa Process

An employment entrance visa is also known as a pink visa in the UAE. The employer must apply for visa quota approval on behalf of the employee to begin the process of acquiring this permission. This permission will be granted by the Ministry of Labor.

The employer will next file an employment contract to the Ministry of Labor. The potential employee must sign this contract.

The Ministry must approve the work permit application before an employment entrance visa may be given. After acquiring authorization and securing a visa, the employee will have two months to visit the UAE.

After entering the UAE on a pink visa, the employee has 60 days to apply for a resident visa and a formal work permit.

Validity of UAE Work Permits

When you initially acquire a work permit, it is valid for 30 days and can be extended for another 30. If you wish to remain in the United Arab Emirates for 60 days, you and your employer will need to apply for a Residence Visa, an Emirates ID, and a Labour Card.

It is the Residence Visa, as well as the Labour Card, that allows you to lawfully stay and work in the UAE. UAE residence visas are granted for one, two, or three years, depending on the purpose of the trip and the UAE authorities’ judgment.

Work Permit Estimated Fees in the UAE

The following are the costs for UAE work permits:

  • AED 200 for all categories/levels for initial approval of a new electronic work permit.
  • The new electronic work permit has been approved:
  • AED 300 for Category 1
  • Level A: 600 AED, Level B: 1,500 AED, and Level C: 2,000 AED: Category 2
  • AED 5,000: Category 3
  • AED 5,000 on all categories for foreign employees over the age of 65.

The second group is broken into tiers based on the company’s ratio of skilled and unskilled staff. In most circumstances, your employer is responsible for paying for your UAE work permit.

UAE Work Visa Renewal: Is it Possible?

You certainly can. All sorts of UAE residence visas are provided for a period of one to three years and can be renewed. Your sponsor must renew your UAE Work Visa within 30 days of its expiration date.

The process for renewing your UAE Work Visa is similar to when you originally applied for it: your sponsor must apply at the appropriate emirate’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs.

However, if your visa expires during the UAE residence visa expiration grace period, your sponsor may renew it.

To apply for both these documents you will need a company trade licence and a company PO Box address. The applications must be submitted to the Ministry of Labour by the owner of the company, partner or PRO. The cards are often issued on the spot if approved.

Once you have obtained your companies establishment labour card and establishment immigration card, you are now able to apply for work permits on behalf of your employees.

As the employer you are responsible for applying for work permits on behalf of your employees and responsible for all cost incurred during the application process. Once you have issued your employee with a contract, you will be able to apply for a residence visa and work permit.

Also, it is important to note if you are looking to employ someone that is already in the UAE with a work permit, it is essential that this handover is managed compliantly otherwise penalty charges may be applied.

Work Visa Process and Documents Required

There are a few steps to the process of obtaining a UAE visa. Here is a step by step guide of the process.

Visa Quotas

In order to hire expats in the UAE you need to obtain visa quotas from the Ministry of Labour (MOL).  This will need to be done by you, the employer and the quota you get will vary depending on the size of your business. 

Contract Signing

Once you have your visa quota, you should get the employment contracts out to your people for signing.  Once received you then submit the offer letter to MOL for review and approval.

MOL approval

At this stage the MOL reviews the details of the position to decide if there are any unemployed UAE citizens that can take the position.  They also check that the company sponsoring the visa is a registered entity in the UAE.  Once these checks are done you will receive the MOL approval.  

E-visa granted

Once MOL approval has been received your workers can then receive their E-visa.  This allows them to travel to the UAE and is valid for 2 months from the date of issue.  Once inside the UAE your workers can only remain for 30 days (can be extended).  During this time they will complete the following tasks to formalise the work visa which allows them to stay and work.

Arrival in the UAE

Upon arriving in the UAE there are a number of formalities to be completed in order to convert your e-visa into a residence visa. These should be done as soon as possible once your worker arrives in the UAE.    

  • Medical Screening
  • Emirates ID application – submit documents including passport and entry permit in order to apply for an emirates ID
  • Signed Labour Contract – once medical results are received this must be submitted to MOL

Once these submissions have been made it will then take around 5 days for the work permit to be granted.  At this point your workers are ready to start.

Workers must also have a valid health insurance policy provided either by their employer or purchased by themselves.  Work permits will not be issued without an insurance card.

Once all of these items are in place the residence visa can then be stamped into the passport.  Once this has been completed the Emirates ID card can also be collected.

Dependant Visas In The AUE

If your employees will be living in the UAE with their Spouse or Children, they will require dependant visas. Similar to the above they will need to be provided with the necessary compliance items such as medical insurance. However, if the employee is male, they will be able to sponsor their own family members provided they have a valid permit and meet a minimum salary of Dh.4000 or Dh.3000. For females, they are able to sponsor their husbands, however there are extra conditions.

The UAE residence visa for employment purposes is valid for two years, or three years in the case of government jobs or some free zones. It enables you to reside anywhere in the UAE; in fact, you can live in one emirate ( e.g. Sharjah) while working in another emirate ( e.g. Dubai).

First of all, the residence visa application is handled by the employer as the sponsoring company. The process involves going to the Ministry of Human Resources & Emiratisation (MoHRE) and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA).

If you want to verify how long the processing time for a this type of visa, it should not be that long once you have your sponsor has all the necessary documents with you. Probably just 3-7 days. The system is quite efficient. It’s a matter of how your employer will work on the papers that adds to the time.

The applicant should:

  • Be below 65 years of age
  • Have a passport valid for at least 6 months
  • Have a job offer or is currently employed
  • Have an entry permit arranged by employer
  • Have completed and passed a medical exam
  • Have an ongoing Emirates ID application
  • Passport (original)
  • Passport-sized photos (5 copies)
  • Entry permit
  • Medical test certificate
  • Education certificate (attested)
  • AED 310 fee (plus other typing fees)
  • Company’s establishment immigration card and trade
  • Resident ID application form certified by Registration Centre at Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA)

Below are the steps to get a Dubai employment visa

Step 1: Offer Letter

The employee will be given a job offer letter by the company and both parties must sign these letters. Take note that employee should have a copy of the job offer. As an employee, make sure you have your copy.

Step 2: Application of Labour Contract

The employer will head to the Labour Ministry to apply for approval for the employee to work in the UAE.

Once approved, the employer and employee must sign the UAE labour contract. This is the official employment contract of both parties. Once this Dubai labour contract is signed and approved by UAE Labour, this overrides the job offer previously signed.

As a reminder, make sure that you have a copy of this employment contract.

Step 3: Work Entry Permit

The employer will also apply for a work permit for the employee to enter the UAE (if the employee is outside the country). This allows the employee to stay in the UAE for employment and is valid for 2 months from the date of issue.

Step 4: Work Visa

Once the employee is inside the UAE, the company can then arrange the necessary steps to complete the process. These steps include

  • Undergoing a medical fitness test
  • Applying for an Emirates ID
  • Labour Card
  • Stamping of the Work Residence Visa on the passport

All these steps should be completed within 60 days (2 months).

Once the employee receives a residence visa, he/she may eventually apply to sponsor his/her parents  or  children  into the country.

Usually the employment/residence visa gets renewed easily if you are planning to continue working for the same company. After your original residence visa expires, you are given a grace period of 30 days to renew your work visa.

Your employer should process the renewal of your contract which means you will sign a new contract (for Limited Contracts ) and then go over the employment visa application process again.

If everything goes well and according to plan, you can get your employment visa in 2-3 weeks. Sometimes even less. The process is quite straightforward once you have all the necessary documents.

So whether you are in Dubai or in other emirates, you can expect to complete the visa process quite quickly.

The employer initiates the process by applying for an employment visa quota approval from the Ministry of Labour (MOL). There are quotas limiting the number of foreign employees a company can hire. The company must have adequate office space per regulations to hire foreign employees. The process can progress once the MOL approves the quota application.

2. Submit Signed Employment Contract

The employee and employer sign a standardized employment contract that outlines salaries, benefits, allowances, probation period, etc. This contract must be submitted to the MOL for approval within 14 days. The MOL reviews the contract to ensure compliance with labor regulations regarding minimum wages, working hours, leaves, etc.

3. Apply for Entry Permit and Work Visa

With quota approval granted, the employer can now apply for the employee's work permit and employment entry visa. This is done on the MOL website by uploading supporting documents like educational certificates, signed contracts, passport copies, etc.

4. Get an Employment Entry Visa

Once the work permit is approved, the employee will receive an Employment Entry Visa via email. This entry visa allows the employee to legally enter the UAE within 60 days to complete medical testing, Emirates ID registration, etc.

5. Enter UAE on an Entry Visa

On arrival in the UAE on the entry visa, the employee undergoes medical testing for fitness, HIV, hepatitis, and other infectious diseases. The medical test checks for infectious diseases while the Emirates ID application registers residency details. A test result certificate is issued within 1-2 days. 

6. Apply for a Residence Visa

Once the medical test is cleared, the employer initiates the residence visa application within the 60-day validity of the entry permit. This is done on the ICA website by paying the visa fees and uploading documents.

7. Medical Test

The medical test at an approved medical center checks for infectious diseases like HIV, hepatitis B, and tuberculosis. Additional tests may be needed based on the job role. The test must be taken within 14 days of arrival.

8. Submit Labor Contract

The signed labor contract must be submitted to the Ministry of Human Resources & Emiratisation (MOHRE) within 14 days after medical screening. The MOHRE reviews and attests to the contract.

9. Get Health Insurance

Employers must provide health insurance coverage for employees per UAE labor law. This must offer basic coverage for hospitalization, surgeries, doctor visits, etc.

10. Receive Residence Visa

The employer will receive the employee's residence visa once the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA) approves the application. This allows the employee to reside and work in the UAE legally.

11. Apply for Emirates ID

An Emirates ID application must be submitted within 15 days of arriving in UAE. This national ID card contains the visa and residency details and is required for almost all transactions.

What Details Should be Included in Your UAE Employment Contract?

Employment Contract should be signed by both the employer and the employee, in the event that the employee chooses to accept the position which outlines the basics of the employment relationships.

  • Your employer’s name and address.

  • Proof of who you are, your qualifications, and what job you’ll do.

Different Work Contract Than Offer Letter in UAE? What action can I take?

If you’re about to sign your work contract after accepting a job offer in the UAE, pay attention. Sometimes the contract might have different terms than your offer letter. This is not allowed according to the UAE’s Labour Law. What should you do if you’re in this situation? 

When you accept a job offer and sign it, that means both you and the company agree to certain terms. The work contract should have the same terms. This rule was made clear by Ministerial Decree No. 46 of 2022 and Article 4 of Ministerial Decision No. 764 of 2015.

If your contract has different terms than the offer letter, you should tell your employer. They can’t change the terms without your agreement. You can ask them to fix it so that the contract matches the offer letter.

If you’ve started working based on the offer letter, and your employer is paying you as per the offer letter, that shows both sides agree to those terms. You can use this as a reason to ask your employer to change the contract to match the offer letter.

If you find a difference between your contract and offer letter, you should talk to your employer. Give them time to fix it. If they refuse, you can get help. What if my employer Wants Me to Pay Employment Visa Fees. What Should I Do?

Your employer usually covers the cost of the work visa. Your employer can’t make you pay for the visa. It’s their responsibility.

Preparing to work

Foreigners wishing to work in the UAE must make sure that their passports are authentic and are valid for at least six months. Degree certificates obtained from outside the UAE need to be attested. All foreigners will be tested for communicable diseases/conditions such as those related to HIV and/or TB.

Foreigners planning to work in the UAE must know that they cannot work on visit visas or tourist visas. They need legitimate work/residency visa/permit to be able to live and work legally in the UAE. The employer needs to procure the work and residency permits. Working without first obtaining the proper visa status is illegal and can lead to penalties and legal liability. The penalties apply to both: the employer and the employee.

Foreigners planning to work in the UAE will need to undergo medical tests at government approved health centres in the UAE. Candidates will be tested for communicable diseases/conditions such as those related to HIV and/or TB. Those found to be HIV positive or having tuberculosis will be deported immediately by the UAE authorities. Hence, if you suspect that you suffer from a communicable disease it is advisable to get tested in your home country first.

As per Cabinet Resolution passed in 2016 , all resident expatriates while renewing their residence visas have to undergo TB screening. Those found with scars or active TB or found having drug-resistant TB will be issued a conditional fitness certificate and be issued residence visa for one year. They will then have to undergo treatment in the UAE.

In the UAE, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) attests documents digitally; while outside the UAE, it attests them through its embassies and consulates .

Document attestation is a procedure that confirms the validity of seals and signatures on documents and instruments, regardless of where they originate.

Types of documents attested

MoFA attests various individual affairs’ documents including birth, death and marriage certificates; as well as, commercial documents such as contracts and agreements, minutes of meeting, trademark registrations and company closure documents.

Steps for getting documents attested

For documents issued in the UAE

For documents issued in the UAE, the original document needs to be attested first by the relevant government entity. However, this is not required for digitally issued or electronically attested documents.

For documents issued outside the UAE

For documents issued outside the UAE, the original document should be attested first by Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the issuing country. Afterwards, the document can be attested by a UAE Embassy or Consulate in that country by applying through the UAE’s MoFA online channels.

If there is no UAE mission in a particular country, applicants may contact MoFA for assistance.

Customers can process all transactions related to attestation services through MoFA’s official website and its app UAEMOFA available on Android and iOS . Upon the approval of the transaction, applicants in the UAE can send the original documents to MoFA via courier and receive them back attested, through the same courier service.

– Evidence of earning annually from your self-employment for at least AED 360,000 for the past two years, or you can show that you have enough money to support yourself in the UAE.

2. Skilled Employees:

Skilled employees must:

– Hold a valid employment contract.

– Have a monthly salary of no less than AED 15,000.

– Be classified at the first, second, or third occupational level, according to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation.

– Possess at least a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification.

Golden visa

Employment in Government Sector

People who work in the public sector have rules to follow. These rules come from the Federal Decree-Law No. 11 of 2008, with some changes made over time. In the public sector, you can have different types of contracts: full-time, part-time, temporary, or special contracts.

UAE Employment Visa Rules

You can enjoy the benefits of working and living in UAE only when the following rules are followed:

  • You need to be at least 18 years old.
  • The company should not have any violations or issues.
  • The company that wants to hire you must have a valid license.
  • The job you will be doing should match the company’s profile.

What is the eligibility to apply for UAE  Work Visa?

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) sets the working standards in UAE. Anyone 18 years old and under the below-mentioned category is eligible to apply for a UAE employment visa. 

Based on the academic classification, expatriates are divided into three categories:

Category 1: Bachelor’s degree holders.

Category 2: Post-secondary diploma holders.

Category 3: High school diploma holders.

Requirements to Obtain UAE Work Visa

To obtain a work visa in UAE, you may need the following documents:

A valid passport and photocopy: A passport that has an expiry for at least six months after you plan to enter the country.

Passport photos: The standard measurement is 43 mm by 55 mm. But, in certain instances, you might also come across requirements for a 2-inch by 2-inch picture, which is approximately 50 mm by 50 mm. 

Emirates ID Card: The Emirates ID card is a special identity card provided by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Ports Security (ICP). It’s not just any card – it’s a must-have by law for everyone living in the UAE, whether you’re a UAE citizen or a resident. You must apply for it and ensure you always have it with you to stay in line with the rules.

You can apply for the new Emirates ID card online on the ICP website or at an approved typing center. You might have to go to one of ICP’s service centers to give your biometric details. It means you can only apply for it once you reach the country if you are a foreigner. 

Entry permit from the Ministry of Labor: The employer contacts the Ministry of Labour (MOL) for approval to get the entry permit and sends over a work contract. The future worker has to sign the contract first before submission.

Now, the Ministry has to approve the work permit. After that, they hand out an employment entry visa. With both of these in hand, the worker has two months to come to the UAE.

Medical Screening Result: You must not have any contagious diseases like HIV and TB. Also, there are some specific jobs where workers must test negative for syphilis and Hepatitis B. If your results are negative, you are good to go. 

Copy of a company card from the employer: It will have the company’s details; only your employer can provide it to you. 

Copy of the company’s commercial license: Only your employer can give it to you. 

Here is the step by step for the application process that you must follow to get an employment visa in UAE.

1. Apply for entry visa quota approval

Initiate getting your Entry Visa by applying at the Ministry of Labour (MOL), and the employer has to do this work. If your visa is for one of those special free zones, the approval must come before you set foot in the UAE.

Free zone companies have to follow a rule that states they can only hire one foreign worker for every 12.5 square meters of office space they have. Plus, if a company has over 100 employees, there are certain jobs where they can only hire a limited number of foreign workers. 

Usually, this process takes about three working days to get the approval.

2. Submit a signed employment contract

The employer sends over a job offer contract for the employee to sign and send back. This contract needs to be in three languages: English, Arabic, and the employee’s native language if it’s different. This is to make sure everyone understands the job and what’s expected.

This contract shows that the employee is coming for a real job, and the Ministry of Labour (MOL) will take a look at it.

This step usually takes two working days if everything is done online.

3. Submit a Work Visa Application and Apply for an Entry Visa

Before you get your Entry Visa, you have to make sure your work permit application is approved. To do that, the Ministry of Labour checks a couple of things. They want to see if any unemployed UAE citizens could do the job you are getting, and they also check if the company hiring you is a registered UAE business. If everything appears fine, you should get the approval. 

4. Receive an Employment Entry Visa

Once you get the work permit, the Ministry gives you an Employment Entry Visa (sometimes called a pink visa). This special visa lets you legally come into the UAE. It has a two-month validity from the day it is issued, and during that time, you can stay in the UAE for 30 days. You can even extend it twice if needed while they sort out your official work permit. You can receive it within three working days. 

5. Obtain a Work Visa and Residence Visa in the UAE

To start the process and get your work permit, there are two ways to enter the country. If your Entry Visa was ready before you arrived, you can pick it up at the airport when you land. But if you were already in the UAE on a different kind of visa, you will need to apply for a ‘change of status’ visa after they issue the Entry Visa. Alternatively, you can leave the UAE and then come back with an Entry Visa. 

Once in the country, you have 60 days to finish all the paperwork and get your work permit and residence visa. 

6. Apply for an Emirates ID

The process is already mentioned above. You need your original passport and employment entry permit to get an Emirates ID.

7. Get a Medical Checkup

You will be tested according to your job requirements, but mainly for contagious diseases, including HIV and TB.

8. Submit a Labor Contract

As part of the work permit application, you must provide a signed labor contract. There’s a specific timeline for this contract now: you have to send it to the Ministry of Labour (MOL) within 14 days after you get your medical results. You can do this by uploading the contract on the MQL Website. 

9. Get Health Insurance

Having health insurance is necessary in the UAE. Employers need to make sure their foreign workers have it. If the company doesn’t provide it, employees need to get it themselves. Without a valid insurance card, you can’t get your work permit or renew it. 

10. Receive a Work/ Residence Visa and Begin Payroll

When every step runs smoothly, you can begin living and working in UAE with a residence visa. You must have it to own a car, open a bank account, etc.

The GCC countries, inspired by the extensive European Schengen travel visa system, have unanimously approved a unified tourist permit . This unified visa will facilitate unrestricted movement among residents of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, and Kuwait.

While the Schengen-style visa is in the process of implementation, citizens of GCC nations can still benefit from their current visa-free travel privileges. Additionally, other residents can enjoy hassle-free travel through e-visa services.

Here's a breakdown of the process for applying for an e-visa in each Gulf nation:

UAE citizens enjoy visa-free travel to Saudi Arabia for tourism purposes. However, residents have the option to apply for e-visa, which grants a validity period of 1 year and permits stays of up to 90 days. The e-visa is available in two types, single entry e-visa, and multiple entry e-visa; fees are Dh452 for a single entry visa.

Requirements :

  • Passport (the passport should not expire in the next six months after the e-Visa is issued.)
  • Bank information.
  • Place of accommodation. (Not mandatory)
  • A passport-sized photo with w white background.
  • Email address.
  • You will need to provide your Guardians' information such as phone number, residence and ID, and approval if the applicant is underage, in need of medical assistance, or handicapped.

Visa application process:

  • Access the official website of the Saudi Arabia eVisa portal or visit - https://visa.mofa.gov.sa/.
  • Create an account or log in if you already have one.
  • Complete the online application form with accurate information.
  • Upload scanned copies of your passport and a recent photograph meeting the specified requirements.
  • Upload a digital copy of your valid UAE visa or residency permit and provide the necessary residential information
  • Double-check to ensure all the information provided is accurate.
  • Enter the necessary medical information and choose one of the available medical insurance options.
  • Pay the visa fee online using the available payment methods.
  • Await approval notification via email, which will include the e-visa if approved.

UAE citizens can travel to Oman visa-free, while residents can opt for e-visa. Visitors can apply for this visa online through the Royal Oman Police website, allowing a stay of 28 days. Visitors can extend their visas for an extra week if necessary. The visa costs OMR 5.

Required documents:

Valid passport: You need a scanned copy of your valid passport. Your passport must be valid for 6 months from your date of entry.

Passport photo: The photo must be recent with a white background.

Resident permit: You need a copy of your residence permit. Your permit must be valid when you enter Oman.

  • Visit the Royal Oman Police (ROP) eVisa website. You'll see an option to apply for a tourist visa at the bottom of the website.
  • Create an account - provide your email address, password, and nationality and verify your account.
  • Click "Apply for visa" and "Apply for unsponsored visa." Then, fill out the online visa application form with the required details.
  • Upload digital copies of your passport, photograph, and any supporting documents as specified.
  • Pay the visa fee online using the provided payment methods.
  • Await approval notification via email, which will contain the e-visa if approved.

Nationalities from 102 countries can enter Qatar visa-free, and all others can apply for an e-visa using the Hayya platform online.

Depending on the passports they hold, residents have the option to obtain either a 90-day or a 30-day visit visa for Qatar. UAE residents who require the Qatar e-visa will have to pay QAR 100.

The Qatar e-Visa application is straightforward and uncomplicated. It consists of 3 easy steps - fill in the application form with your personal data and travel details, upload the essential documentation in PDF format, and make the payment for the processing of your application.

  • Proof of accommodation in Qatar (e.g., hotel booking or your host’s address)
  • Details of your return (or onward) travel
  • Copy of your passport (with a minimum validity of six months)
  • Copy of your residence permit or visa to any one of the eligible countries stated above (with a minimum validity of 30 days).
  • Documents stating the applicant's current employment status and occupation
  • Navigate to the official website of the Qatar Ministry of Interior's Qatar e-Visa portal.
  • Register for an account or log in if you have one that is existing.
  • Fill in the online visa application form with the required details.
  • Upload digital copies of your passport, photograph, and supporting documents.
  • Pay the visa fee online through the provided payment gateway.
  • Once processed, receive the e-visa via email.

Bahrain offers various types of visit visas tailored to the residency status and duration of stay for GCC residents and visitors. These include a two-week single-entry visa for GCC residents, a one-month multiple-entry visa for GCC visitors, a three-month multiple-entry visa for GCC residents, and a one-year multiple-entry visa for GCC residents. Each visa type has its conditions and validity period. Additionally, Bahrain also provides on-arrival visa services for eligible individuals. Visa fees differ as per the length of the visit.

Required terms of service:

  • Applicant must be outside Bahrain when applying for this visa.
  • Applicant must have had a current resident permit of a GCC country for at least 3 months.
  • Applicant's resident permit for a GCC country must be valid for at least another 3 months.
  • Applicants with GCC resident permits occupation should not be labourers
  • The visa is issued and paid online.

Validity conditions:

  • If the visa expires before entry to Bahrain, the applicant must apply again and another fee must be paid.

Entry conditions:

  • Applicant must not take up any paid or unpaid employment during the visit to Bahrain.
  • Passport must be valid for at least six months.
  • Copy of the applicant’s passport. (Family Page and any additional information page).
  • Copy of GCC residence permit valid for 3 months
  • Copy of valid confirmed return air ticket.
  • Copy of hotel booking in Kingdom of Bahrain. Alternately, in case you are staying with a relative/friend, please provide a copy of their ID reader's print out.
  • Go to the official eVisa Bahrain website. / https://www.evisa.gov.bh/
  • Select the type of visa you need (tourist, business, etc.).
  • Upload scanned copies of your passport, photograph, and any other requested documents.
  • Pay the visa fee using the available online payment options.
  • Receive the e-visa confirmation via email once it's approved.

Travellers holding a valid UAE passport will not require visa to enter Kuwait. If you hold a foreign passport and a GCC residency card, you must obtain an e-visa before you can travel to Kuwait. This applies to all foreigners living in the UAE. The e-visa issued by the Kuwait portal is valid for up to 30 days.

The application process for the Kuwait online visa for UAE residents is quick, and it involves submitting a few basic personal details, passport information, and answering some security questions.

Requirements:

Eligibility: Individuals applying for a Kuwait visa from Dubai and the UAE must be either of the following: A resident of the UAE with a GCC residency permit that will be valid for at least 6 months. A national of one of the eligible countries listed below.

Passport validity: The applicant must have a passport that will be valid for at least 6 months from the date of application.

Security: There must be no security restrictions imposed on the applicant that would prevent them from entering Kuwait.

Visa compliance: Visitors must comply with all conditions of their visa when in Kuwait. Those who have breached the terms of their visa on previous occasions (such as staying in the country longer than permitted) may be denied a new visa.

  • Fill out your online application form for Kuwait e-visa
  • All information provided in the online application form for Kuwait e-visa should match exactly as per your passport.
  • Upload scanned copies of your passport, photograph, and any other necessary documents.
  • Pay the visa fee online through the available payment options.
  • Receive the e-visa via email once it's processed and approved.
  • Once the online application form was submitted, all the Kuwait e-visa notification and updates will be sent via email.

The Kuwait e-visa processing time is within 24 hours (except Friday, Saturday & holidays in Kuwait). However, some applications may take longer, up to three (3) business days, upon completion of the Kuwait e-visa application form.

Abu Dhabi: The UAE government has introduced five digital guidelines for the cancellation of visas. The visa of family members are to be cancelled by the sponsor while the employee visa should be cancelled by the respective companies or employers. Individuals cannot cancel their visas on their own. To cancel an employee’s visa, the company should first apply for cancellation of his/her employment contract and labour card at the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. The employee too should sign on the application.

Besides, an affidavit signed by the employee stating that he/she had duly received the wages and other benefits. After this, the employer can apply to the ICP or GDRFI for visa cancellation. Meanwhile, the individuals could cancel their visa only after the visa cancellation process of the family members is completed. The visas could be cancelled online via the official website of ICP or through approved typing centres. Persons would be allowed to stay in the country only if the visa is renewed before it expires. However, individuals may be allowed to stay in the country for 1 – 6 months after visa cancellation depending upon the nature of the visa.

Meanwhile, AED 50 would be charged as a fine for each day that a person stays in the country with an expired visa. It must be noted that the Emirates ID too would be invalid as soon as the visa expires. So, the application for visa cancellation should be submitted at the ICP before it expires.
