Case in point: This Saturday, Dec. 17, Rose Hill Drive will play its first show in nearly six years. That’s a huge break for any band, and especially one that had climbed to the level of opening for The Who and Stone Temple Pilots before abruptly stopping.

Six years is a real momentum killer. This new reunion gig could launch a significant comeback; it could amount to nothing at all. But brothers Daniel and Jake Sproul and drummer Nate Barnes don’t care. They just want to rock again.

Rose Hill Drive grew up fostering a style of hard-driving classic rock influences—and wound up opening for the Who and Van Halen.

Brothers Daniel Sproul (guitar and backup vocals) and Jacob Sproul (bass guitar, vocals) and childhood friend Nate Barnes (drums) spent hours practicing in the basement of the Sprouls’ house on Rose Hill Drive in Boulder’s University Hill neighborhood. Set in the laid-back college town, it made their heavy power-trio riffage all the more surprising.

“Jake and I were making music together since elementary school,” Daniel Sproul said. “My dad was always passionate about music, and we got into it just being around electric guitars and a stereo.”  

“During high school, we would play every day after classes, and I’d sleep over every weekend so we could jam,” Barnes added.

The boys were blessed with virtuosity beyond their years, and Jake Sproul’s soaring tenor and Daniel Sproul’s searing solos were hailed as a throwback to the heyday of Cream and Led Zeppelin. They found day jobs around town and played as many shows as they could, then headed out on the road, where Rose Hill Drive ascended relatively quickly, performing with the Black Crowes, Wilco, Queens of the Stone Age and Aerosmith, among others, and also at the Bonnaroo, Wakarusa and Austin City Limits music festivals and on the Warped tour.

“The record industry was slowly crashing, and we rode that wave perfectly—it kept us jamming on the road,” Jake Sproul said.

Despite interest from several major labels, there had been no full-length album release. Brendan O’Brien, the producer and creative consultant who had worked with a long list of heavyweights (Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bruce Springsteen), signed on to do Rose Hill Drive’s first album after the band played a private showcase. But the members did the unexpected—they shelved the project. With engineer Nick DiDia, Rose Hill Drive went back into the studio and recorded its self-titled debut album, released in 2006 on Megaforce Records. Rose Hill Drive debuted at No. 1 on Billboard ’s regional Heatseekers (Mountain) chart for up and coming artists.

While on tour in support of the album, the group played the same stage as the Who at the Hyde Park Calling Festival in London and attracted the attention of legendary guitarist Pete Townshend. Rose Hill Drive supported the Who on select U.S. and European dates, and Townshend invited the band onto his weekly internet talk show called “In The Attic.” The group was named one of the “10 New Artists to Watch” in 2007 in Rolling Stone magazine.

Rose Hill Drive returned to Boulder to write and record a second album, Moon is the New Earth . It positioned the band as an innovator in the revival of traditional blues-rock and psychedelic metal, and the song “Sneak Out” appeared in the popular music video game “Guitar Hero 5.” But the tight-knit trio took a hiatus and almost broke up.

“We’d been in close quarters for ten years together,” Barnes said. “We had a desire to try something new and different. We got to a point where we all needed to go do our own thing for a while.”

The band then added bass player Jimmy Stofer and became a two-guitar quartet, recording a third album in Boulder. Americana fizzled. “It was more keyboard and vocal oriented,” Barnes said. “We’d have changed the name of the band if it wasn’t already established.”

After a fast start, Rose Hill Drive couldn’t hold on.

“I thought that we were going to be the biggest thing ever and people had to recognize it—and it’s just not like that,” Daniel Sproul said. “I don’t think that realization would have been easy when I was eighteen.”

Honoring Early Rose Hill, Kansas

Rose Hill, Kansas was named by J.H. Lowery, in 1869. At the time, the government provided incentives for railroad workers and farmers to “Go West, Young Man, Go West” and settle the land. Mr. Lowery built a home about one mile south of the current elementary school where he planted roses, shrubs, and trees.

Lowery was an ambitious bachelor from Rose Hill, New York, and moved his nursery stock and seeds from there to sell to the settlers in Kansas. Unfortunately, sales were halted due to harsh Kansas blizzards, drought, and grasshoppers which would eventually ruin his stock completely and force him to move back to New York. 

While Mr. Lowery’s business plans wilted, the City of Rose Hill began to sprout with thriving crops for farmers, a post office, a railroad, and new businesses being built in town including grocery stores, a meat market, barber shop, millinery store, drug store, Dr. Barkelow’s doctor’s office, a cream station, hardware store, harness/shoe repair shop, schools, a bank, Methodist Church, and nearby Friends Church.

Rose Hill grew to have a telephone system in 1905, a high school in 1909 (Bernice Cuttings was the first graduate), a Boy Scout troop in 1915, and electricity in 1927. Settlers worked hard but also enjoyed talent programs, bands, baseball games, 4th of July picnics, ice cream socials, literary society, Lyceum programs, and Wild West & traveling medicine shows.

The Rose Hill Historical Society has a mission to collect, preserve, exhibit, and promote the heritage of our community. Through the collection of memorabilia, the Society wishes to educate and provide programs to make the past more meaningful to Rose Hill’s residents and visitors. See our museum exhibits !

Sparrow Hills , or Vorobyovy Gory, located in Moscow’s south-western area, provides you excellent view of Moscow. Vorobyovy Gory are 80 meters above the city level and is located across the Moscow River from Luzhniki Stadium.  Vorobyovy Gory is considered one of the seven hills of Moscow. It’s a nice spot to see the skyline of Moscow and on weekends it’s an area for celebrating weddings; in the evenings it becomes a place for bikers to show their skills.

Nearby is one of the oldest Russian institutions of higher education, Moscow State University (abbreviated as MGU) was established in 1755. The university originally was situated on Red Square from 1755 to 1787. During the rule of Catherine the Great it was moved to Mokhovaya Street. In 1950s the main block of buildings, which we can see now from the Sparrow Hills, was built.

Victory Park was completed in the mid1990s. It is located on the Poklonnaya Gora (Hill), where Napoleon waited in vain to be given the keys to the city when his army was surrounding Moscow in 1812. Here you can see, monuments, fountains, military equipment; a memorial mosque, synagogue, church, museum, and the Eternal Flame. The Triumphal Arch is nearby is a symbol of victory in the Patriotic War of 1812.

Novodevichy Convent (Bogoroditse-Smolensky Monastery) is an Orthodox convent in Moscow. Novodevichy Convent was founded by Grand Prince Vasili y III in 1524, in gratitude for taking conquering Smolensk in 1514.  The oldest structure in the Convent, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Smolensk, is dedicated to the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God, the “Protectress of Russian Borders.”. Now Novodevichy Convent is both a monastery and a branch of the State Historical Museum.

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure is one of the central places to celebrate big Russian holidays like Victory Day, City Day, New Year, Christmas, and the Maslenitsa festival. During these days, special entertainment and concert programs are organized in the park. The park also holds a number of its own events. Gorky Park is a leisure destination for the citizens of Moscow

Krymsky (Crimean) Bridge is the only suspension bridge in Moscow. It was constructed in 1938, being a part of Stalin’s reconstruction of downtown Moscow. It carries Sadovoye Koltso highway (the Garden Ring) across the Moscow River.

Near the Kremlin, on the Moscow River, you can see the enormous Cathedral of Christ the Saviour , which is the biggest church in Russia. The existing building is a reconstruction.. The original cathedral was erected as a gratitude for saving Russia from the Napoleonic invasion. Its construction lasted for almost 44 years. The cathedral was then destroyed in 1931 by Stalin. It was rebuilt in the same place with the same name during 1994- 2000.

Hotel Ukraina (Radisson Royal Hotel), which is 198 m high, is one of the “7 Sisters,” tiered neoclassical towers built by Stalin between 1947 and 1953.

We drive along the Garden Ring , a circular road surrounding central Moscow. Its course corresponding to what used to be the city ramparts and moat , surrounding Zemlyanoy Gorod in the 17th century.

Then we go to the Big Theatre ( the Bolshoi Theater) was opened in 1856, on Tsar Alexander II’s coronation day. The Bolshoi has undergone many renovations and the most recent and significant  reconstruction project lasted from l July 2005 to 28 October 2011, during which the theater was closed. The Bolshoi Theatre is a classic symbol and landmark of Russia.

We proceed to Lubyanka Street , that is famous for the KGB and FSB headquarters.

It is impossible to ignore St. Basil’s Cathedral (Pokrovsky Cathedral) with its fairy-tale look. It was built in 1555-1560 by order of Ivan the Terrible in honor of conquering the Kazan Tartars and victory over the Khanate of Kazan

Arbat , a pedestrian street, where you can buy souvenirs and experience the atmosphere of old Russia, begins near the oldest cinema theater in Russia and stretches to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – one of the 7 Stalin skyscrapers.

At the end of the tour, we pass the place where the famous Red October chocolate factory was situated (it moved out of the city center). Now there is an exhibition hall.
