Your Guide to Niagara Falls Tours from New York City

Airports & entry, planning tips, restaurants & eating out, nightlife & entertainment, getting around, accommodations, attractions.

The city of New York has three main airports: John F Kennedy International Airport, La Guardia Airport, and Newark Liberty International Airport.

AirTrain is the most convenient way to get from JFK Airport to the city. It connects the subway with the airport and you can get to Manhattan in an hour and for a cost of just $2.75. Other way to get to the center is to take an express bus to Grand Central Terminal or Port Authority, which will take you 1,5 hour and cost you $18.

The approximate taxi fare is $52, but tolls, tips, and rush hour surcharges are not included. Taxis can be found at the taxi dispatch booths. Or you can use services such as Uber.

Although La Guardia is situated closest to Manhattan, it is considered the least accessible by public transport airport of New York City. To get to the center, you need to take an express bus #Q70, which will bring you to the 74 th Street – Broadway metro station and will cost you $15.

The flat taxi cost varies between $34 and $53, excluding tips and tolls. Uber service is also an option.

To get to New York City center from Newark Liberty International Airport, take an AirTrain to Newark Airport train station. There you can change to any train, which goes to New York Penn station, and it will cost you $13.

Taxi fares vary from $60 to $80, and do not include tips or tolls. You can take a taxi, use Uber, or choose a similar service.

If you are planning to visit a musical, you won’t be needing an evening gown. Your clothes can be casual (dark jeans and a shirt will do), but neat and clean. A cocktail dress for a woman will be appropriate. But you won’t need your diamonds or a bow tie.

You should also consider your other plans for New York City, before making a packing list. Are you planning to walk a lot? Bring comfortable shoes or snickers. Going for a picnic in the Central Park? Planning to dine in a luxury establishment? All your plans will require different clothing.

And don’t forget to book all your tickets in advance. Tickets for such events as Broadway musicals sell out weeks before the date. Keep that in mind, when planning your trip itinerary.

The one thing you can be sure about, when traveling to New York City, is that you won’t get hungry. Restaurants, cafes, bistros, bars, and street vendors are multiple and can fit any taste or budget. Small family cafes and huge world-known restaurant chains, fast food bistros and luxury top-end restaurants, street food of all kinds – all of these can be found in New York. The variety of different cuisines is exquisite: French, Greek, Italian, Mexican, Middle Easter, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Indian, Vietnamese – this is just a short list of what you can taste in the Big Apple.

If you are on a low budget and want to cook for yourself, visit the markets: Chelsea and Fulton 55, where you can find all kinds of fresh ingredients for your meals, as well as many street food vendors and budget cafes. To get the best taste of NYC, we would recommend taking a guided NYC food tour .

There is also a list of must-try foods and drinks of New York. They don’t necessarily originate from the city, but they have definitely gained their particular features here and must be appreciated. So, if you want to feel like a real New Yorker, don’t avoid:

  • Cheesecake New York
  • Long Island Ice Tea

New York City is, probably, the world’s winner for the number of night establishments opening every week, as well as for ones that close. Every district of the city has a variety of night clubs and bars for every taste and wallet size. If you stay in Manhattan, you should visit Greenwich Village, which is filled with night entertainment facilities, popular with both locals and tourists. Since the NYU students are the biggest part of the local public here, the prices are quite reasonable. If you are up for something more elegant, head to Chelsea or Lower East Side. And, of course, even if you stay in Queens, Staten Island, or Brooklyn, you won’t feel the lack of night entertainment either. New York is the city, which never sleeps.

Jazz is another thing that you can always find in the Big Apple. It is called the world capital of jazz for a reason. In the past, the city has revealed hundreds of jazz musicians and presented them to the world. Nowadays, there are still numerous establishments, where you can enjoy a drink with your friends or date, while listening to some good jazz. The Blue Note, situated in Greenwich Village, is, probably, the most well-known jazz club, as well as the Village Vanguard, located in the same district. However, these are the places for people with high travel budget. If you are looking for something simpler and cheaper, head to Fat Cat or Smalls, standing just a block away from each other, also in Greenwich Village.

If you are into passionate Afro-Caribbean music and love Latina dancing, New York City is a great place for you too! Salsa, although originates from Cuba, has rooted deeply in the cultural life of New York. The most popular places are Copacabana near the Times Square, which opened its doors for the first time in the 1940’s, Iguana in West Midtown, and El Morocco in Spanish Harlem.

If you consider yourself more of a classical music lover, choose one of the multiple opera, ballet, or musical performances, which the city offers. Head to Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, or one of the Broadway theaters, in order to enjoy a nice classical evening. Check out the list of the best musicals in New York, which we prepared for you, and don’t forget to book in advance!

And, of course, you can’t feel real New York without attending one of the sport matches. Most New Yorkers are passionate sport fans and have their favorite baseball, hockey, or basketball team. Join them for a night of sport fun, and don’t forget to pick up souvenirs with the name of the team you like!

Getting around the city of New York is not difficult, as it has an extremely extended system of public transportation. Subway, buses, commuter rail, as well as ferries, operate on a regular basis.

The simplest way to get from one point to another inside the city limits is by subway. You might be scared by the horror stories about New York subway criminal situation, but it’s almost completely in the past nowadays. Anyway, you should still beware and not attract criminals. The rules of safety are quite clear: don’t show your valuables in public, don’t walk alone at night, try to take crowded trains and use crowded stations. If you keep that in mind, most likely, you’ll be safe.

However, if you don’t feel secure enough, it’s better to take a taxi. World-famous yellow cabs have become a real symbol of New York, along with the Empire State Building, Central Park, and the Statue of Liberty. This is, probably, the second most popular way of transportation among New Yorkers, after subway.

Cabs are multiple, comfortable and reasonably-priced. To get one, all you need to do is raise your arm standing at the edge of the pavement. Keep in mind, though, it might be hard to catch a taxi during the rush hours. And, of course, remember about traffic jams. It might be better to take a subway if you are in a hurry!

Ferries connect the heart of New York with its islands. Staten Island Ferry starts at the Battery Park in the south of Manhattan and goes to Staten Island. It’s not only a great way of transportation, but also an opportunity to see New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty on the way. The big bonus is that it’s free.

New York Waterway Company operates ferries between the city and New Jersey Hudson River Waterfront, stopping also in Brooklyn and Queens. These ferries are not free, so keep that in mind.

New York Water Taxi are ferries painted yellow, like famous New York cabs. They connect points within Manhattan, as well as some points in Brooklyn and New Jersey.

The Big Apple is, probably, one of the most expensive cities to live in. If you decide to visit New York, be ready to pay, at least, $100 for a double room in a hotel, and a minimum of $50 for a bed in a hostel dormitory. However, that is if you want to stay in Manhattan. But there are other districts in New York City, of course. If you choose Queens, Brooklyn, Long Island, or New Jersey, you can find much cheaper accommodations of the same quality as in Manhattan.

When traveling during the low tourist season – in January, February, or August, you can also save your traveler’s budget, as hotels usually reduce prices during this time of year. As for the days of week, Sunday is usually the cheapest day to rent a room in New York City.

When booking, keep in mind that fares are often mentioned without taxes. If you add all the taxes for New York State and New York City, you will end up with a 15%-higher price. Be ready to pay it on arrival.

New York City has continental climate, with hot summers, cold winters, cool autumns, and wet springs. In winter, the temperature can fall as low as -18 o C, and during the summer, it can raise as high as to +38 o C.Keep in mind, during the summer months, as well as in September, New York can experience heavy tropical storms, so bring a raincoat. Snowstorms occur often in winter, but the snow usually does not last longer than a couple of days.

New York is the city, which you can explore for weeks : admiring the skyscrappers, having lovely picnics in the parks, taking pictures, listening to stories, and buying souvenirs. However, if you have limited time, here is a list of main attractions you should not miss.

Landmarks : the Statue of Liberty , Wall Street, Federal Hall, World Trade Center Site, Brooklyn Bridge, Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Grand Central Terminal, New York Public Library, Rockefeller Center, Radio Music Hall, and Times Square.

Museums : the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Frick Collection, the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the PS1 Contemporary Art Center, the American Museum of Natural History, the New York Hall of Science, and the Transit Museum.

Parks : Central Park, Fort Tryon Park, Pelham Bay Park, Prospect Park, Flushing Meadow Park, the Greenbelt, and parts of the Gateway National Recreational Area.

If you see these places, you can honestly say that you have seen the most interesting spots in New York. However, if you want to get the most out of your time in New York City, we highly recommend taking a daily bus tour. Anyway, a trip to New York will become something you’ll remember for the rest of your life!

7 of the Best Niagara Falls Tours From New York That Really Carry Water

Last Updated: May 8, 2023 //  by  Ashley Smith Leave a Comment

On my first visit to Niagara Falls, I didn’t take advantage of any of these best Niagara Falls tours from New York. Instead, I did it the wrong way. I showed up with no plan and no idea of what I would be missing by doing so.

Niagara Falls is absolutely incredible—a sight you can’t really appreciate in pictures but must see (and hear) up close for yourself. I never got as close to the Falls as I would have liked and I didn’t get to learn anything about them either.

Table of Contents

7 of the best niagara falls tours from new york: Horseshoe Falls as seen from above

For those reasons, I bring you a list of the best Niagara Falls tours from New York so you can have the ideal Niagara Falls experience that I missed.

Visiting Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is a unique attraction in that you can visit from both Canada and the United States, seeing different things from each side. If you plan on checking out both, remember you must have your passport to cross the border and back. (I didn’t have my passport with me on my visit so I was restricted to the New York side of things.)

This post is going to specifically focus on the best Niagara Falls tours from New York only.  If you’re a U.S. resident planning to take these tours, you do not need a passport. But, I can’t stress enough you should take one anyway in case the day takes you across the border as there’s a lot of cool stuff to see over there too.

7 of the best niagara falls tours from new york: Maid of the Mist tour close to the falls

Why take a tour of Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is massive. Like, way bigger and more terrifyingly powerful than you could ever gauge from just looking at pictures. Niagara Falls is also America’s oldest state park (established in 1885) with an interesting history all its own.

I recommend taking a tour of Niagara Falls to:

  • Get up close views of the Falls like none other
  • Check out some of the lesser-known parts of the Falls—not just the most famous and most recognizable areas
  • Really get a sense of the power of the Falls (the sound will astound!)
  • Learn about the history of the Falls and the surrounding areas from expert guides
  • See the highlights if you’re short on time

Pro tip: If you’ll be visiting Toronto before or after your visit to Niagara Falls, be sure to pick up a Toronto CityPASS to save a bunch of money on the city’s popular sights (including a trip up the CN Tower).

Where to stay at Niagara Falls (on the U.S. side)

To get a good sense of what Niagara Falls is all about, you really need to stay overnight and give this natural wonder its due. Here are some great places to stay in Niagara Falls (New York).

Hyatt Place Niagara Falls

This 3-star hotel is a favorite among visitors in large part because of its ideal location. From the Hyatt Place Niagara Falls it’s just a 3-minute walk to Niagara Falls State Park, 7 minutes to the famous Rainbow Bridge (you can walk to Canada!), and half an hour to Horseshoe Falls—the most famous section of Niagara Falls.

They offer free WiFi, it’s pet-friendly, and reviewers love the staff and ease of check-in.

The Giacomo

The Niagara Falls area has its fair share of hotel chains, but I love the Giacomo and its grand art deco feel. This downtown Niagara Falls hotel is just a 10-minute walk to Niagara Falls State Park and many of the sights.

Reviewers love the beauty and cleanliness of this hotel along with the helpfulness of the staff. They also claim the Giacomo has the best view and location on the New York side of the Falls.

The Red Coach Inn

For something a little different, check out the Red Coach Inn . It has a “Superb” rating by reviewers and has such a cozy vibe you’ll feel right at home.

Like the two above, the Red Coach Inn is within walking distance of many of Niagara Falls’ most popular sites: 1 minute to Niagara Falls State Park, 9 minutes to the Rainbow Bridge, and 35 minutes to Horseshoe Falls.

They offer a free cooked-to-order breakfast, free parking, and free WiFi. Reviewers also note that it’s safe, quiet, and convenient.

Excellent trip. I had a great time on the excursion today. Felt well looked after by the guides (Bryan and Joel) who were very knowledgeable and had lots of useful recommendations and suggestions. This will go down as one of my most memorable parts of any holiday and I will be recommending to anyone who comes to New York, esp. given the convenience of the pick up and drop of location.

Niagara Falls Tour Itinerary from New York

To make the most of the day, we will depart at 4:00 am from the bustling Times Square in New York City towards the border between the United States and Canada.

The travel time until we reach Niagara Falls is approximately 7 to 8 hours, with a stop for rest. During the journey aboard a comfortable bus, we will enjoy the beautiful landscapes of northern North America.

Upon arriving at our destination around 11:00 am, we will be amazed by the sight of Niagara Falls. From various viewpoints, we will contemplate the impressive waterfalls while a guide in Spanish and English shares interesting facts about the world’s most famous waterfalls.

To have an unparalleled perspective of the falls, we will approach one of the selected observation points based on current weather conditions. We might visit the Terrapin Point lookout on Goat Island, which offers a unique view of the Horseshoe Falls , the most breathtaking of the three waterfalls.

If you have chosen the option that includes Maid of the Mist, available only from May to October, you will enjoy a boat ride to the falls. The journey will take place aboard the renowned Maid of the Mist boat. You may get a little wet, but we will provide ponchos so you can fully enjoy the experience.

After admiring the impressive Niagara Falls up close, we will give you free time to have lunch on your own. Once you are recharged, we will finally begin our journey back to New York, where, after 7 to 8 hours of travel, we will arrive between 11:00 pm and midnight.

Please note that the itinerary schedules and dates are approximate, as they depend on weather conditions and whether the Niagara Falls are frozen or not*

Governor Hochul Announces Construction of ‘Crow’s Nest’ Project at Niagara Falls State Park

Project To Extend Walkway From Gorge to Prospect Point

Part of Governor Hochul’s Summer Campaign to Help Kids and Families “Get Offline, Get Outside”

Crows Next 1 8 27 24

Maid of the Mist President Christopher M. Glynn (far right) joins local and state dignitaries in breaking ground for the Crow’s Nest extension. Maid of the Mist is contributing $1.7M to the project. Governor Kathy Hochul today announced construction is set to begin on the extension of the ‘Crow’s Nest’ at Niagara Falls State Park. The expansion project includes the construction of new stairs and an overlook structure which will connect the existing ‘Crow’s Nest’ feature to Prospect Point at Niagara Falls State Park, providing a new close-up view of the Falls. The Aug. 27, 2024 announcement builds on Governor Hochul’s summer campaign to help kids and families “ Get Offline, Get Outside .” “Niagara Falls State Park is the perfect place to get outdoors, get offline, and enjoy nature,”  Governor Hochul said.  “This project will provide another opportunity for New Yorkers to put their phones down and take advantage of all the beautiful natural resources that our state has to offer.” The Crow’s Nest extension will allow visitors to exit the Lower Niagara Falls Gorge on foot, easing elevator congestion.

The ‘Crow’s Nest’ is a set of stairs located alongside the American Falls that allow visitors to climb halfway up the side of the Falls for breathtaking views of the Falls before requiring visitors to go back down into the Gorge and return to the upper level via the Maid of the Mist elevators. When complete, the project will provide visitors with a new option to experience the Niagara Gorge and relieve pedestrian congestion in the lower gorge during the busy season, where the only current means of egress is the elevator inside of the observation tower. The stairs will be operated as a one-way egress from the lower gorge during the busy season, and as a two-way access to the overlook during a portion of the off season.

Work will begin in early September 2024 and be complete for the 2026 season. The $9 million project is being funded by State Parks capital funding, The Maid of the Mist Corporation, The Niagara River Greenway and the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund.

Crows Nest 3 8 27 24

New York State Parks Commissioner Pro Tempore Randy Simons   said,  “This project perfectly exemplifies the ways we are working to enhance our visitors’ experiences to our State Parks. In this case, the stairs will provide recreation opportunities by expanding access to the lower part of the gorge and to Niagara Falls, an alternative to needing an elevator and the overlook will allow people to experience the Falls from a very close and unparalleled viewing perspective. We are grateful to all of our partners who have contributed to this project.”

New York Power Authority Chairman and Western New York Resident John R. Koelmel said , “The new construction will connect the crow’s nest feature to Prospect Point in Niagara Falls State Park, making it easier for visitors to take in the breathtaking view of Niagara Falls. Our support for the project is reflective of the Power Authority’s ongoing commitment to the community surrounding the Niagara Power Project.”

Representative Tim Kennedy said,  “Our region is enriched by having one of the natural wonders of the world in our own backyard. This project will improve access with even more breathtaking views of Niagara Falls and provide a new way for residents and tourists to take in nature and enjoy the great outdoors with friends and family.”

State Senator Rob Ortt   said,  “I am always proud to support projects that enhance the crown jewel of the New York State Parks system. Creating more navigable paths at one of the most popular destinations at Niagara Falls State Park is long overdue and ultimately, will make for better visitor experiences for guests from around the world.”

Assemblymember Angelo Morinello said,  “Thank you to Governor Hochul and all the partners who continue to add to our World Class Attraction, Niagara Falls and the Niagara Gorge. The completion of the Crows Nest and the additional access to the gorge increases the overall Niagara Falls experience for locals and tourists alike.”

Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino said,  “This addition to the State Park experience will provide even more breathtaking access to our Niagara Falls. The “Crow’s Nest” extension will give residents and visitors an unmatched opportunity to enjoy the beauty and majesty of our natural wonder. We appreciate this investment and look forward to its completion.”

Maid of the Mist President Christopher M. Glynn   said , “We believe our $1.7M investment in this innovative project will further enhance the Maid of the Mist Experience,” said. When the extension is finished, it will expedite people moving up to Prospect Point, alleviating some of the pressure on the Observation Tower elevators during our busiest times, such as the Memorial Day and Fourth of July weekends.”

Governor Hochul’s   “Get Offline, Get Outside”  campaign builds on her efforts to promote healthy living among young people and families across New York. Governor Hochul recently signed nation-leading legislation – the Stop Addictive Feeds Exploitation (SAFE) for Kids Act and New York Child Data Protection Act  – to protect kids from addictive social media feeds and shield their personal data from online platforms.
