Bumdra Trek is the combination of easy trek around Paro with guided Paro and Thimphu cities tour. This is the shortest available trek in Bhutan starting and ending in Paro which starts from the north of the valley and ending at the north-west of the valley ending at the Taktsang Monastery often popularly known as the ‘Tiger’s Nest’, one of the holiest places in Bhutan. Though requiring a great deal of climbing the first day on trek, you will be rewarded with some spectacular views of the valley and the snow-capped mountains; the trek second day is relatively much easier with mostly descending. Initially, the tour starts with a bird’s eye-view of the world’s tallest mountain series onboard flight to the lush green valley of Paro. The day is spent in colorful Paro city tour with visits to Ta Dzong and Paro Rinpung Dzong then drive to Thimphu. Allow one day sightseeing in Thimphu and drive back to Paro. The trek begins the third day with excursion ridge hiking around Bumdra then to ultimately end at the Taktsang Monastery ‘Tiger’s Nest’ and drive back to Paro. Bumdra Trekking is a quick journey into the Dragon Kingdom visiting the popular landmarks of Bhutan and witnessing some great panoramic views of the Bhutanese landscape and the snow-capped mountains.

Trip Highlights:

  • Witness the world’s highest mountains during the flight to the lush green Paro Valley.
  • Explore Paro town with guided city tour.
  • The tiny capital of Thimphu.
  • Easy hike into the Bumdra region.
  • Taktsang Monastery ‘Tiger’s Nest’ perched in a vertical cliff.
  • Discover age-old Bhutanese culture and traditions.
  • Spectacular panoramic views of the Bhutanese landscape and snow-capped mountains.

Day to Day Itinerary:

Day 01: Arrive Paro (2,250m) – Sightseeing & drive to Thimphu (2,350m) Fly into Paro witnessing the world’s highest mountain series. Upon arrival at the airport, met by our representatives and transfer to Paro town for lunch. After lunch, begins the guided Paro city tour with visits to Ta Dzong which once was a watchtower built to defend Rinpung Dzong during the inter-valleys wars of the 17th century. Later on during 1968 it was turned into a Bhutan’s National Museum. Then visit Paro Rinpung Dzong built in 1646 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the first spiritual and temporal ruler of Bhutan. The Dzong is the seat of district administration, district court and the monastic body. A traditional roofed cantilever bridge known as ‘Nemi Zam’ is located at it’s southern section.

PM: Drive to Thimphu, the tiny and modern capital of Bhutan which takes about 1 & half hour drive. Thimphu is the only capital in the world with no traffic lights and about three lines of shops makes up Thimphu town. Check-in hotel upon arrival at Thimphu. In the evening, stroll round town and visit handicraft emporium etc. Overnight at Hotel.(Lunch/Dinner included)

Day 02: Thimphu sightseeing & drive to Paro (2,250m) After breakfast proceed with the sightseeing and visit National Memorial Chorten built in honor of the third king of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. Then to the Institute of Traditional Medicine where old healing arts of acupuncture and herbal remedies are still practiced. Folk Heritage Museum to see Bhutanese rural past in it’s exhibits of artifacts used in rural households, the Textile Museum to observe the art of traditional weaving which also has good collection of old textiles rich in color and designs. The Buddha’s Point where the biggest statue of Buddha is located and commanding the great view of the Thimphu valley. Motitang Zoo to see ‘Takin’ Bhutan’s national animal. As well as Weekly Outdoor Market. Afterwards, drive back to Paro. Overnight at Hotel.(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner included)

Day 03: Drive to Sangchen Chokhor & trek to Bumdra (3,800m)  After breakfast, a short drive will take you to Sangchen Chokhor which is the most important college in Bhutan and the trek-start-point. You will then climb steadily up the mountainside through thick forests of Himalayan blue pine, oak, rhododendron until reaching ‘Chochong-Tse’, a small 17th century temple and meditation cave.  The trail then proceeds with short steep climb to a panoramic viewpoint; walk along the ridgeline trail above the valley floors witnessing great views of surrounding lush valleys and snow-capped peaks. You will then pass through beautiful forests and meadows of wildflowers approaching the tree line and to our campsite which provides panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayas. Overnight Camp. (Walking Duration: 4-6 hours)(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner included)

Day 04: Day excursion (Ridge Hike) in Bumdra (3,800m) After breakfast, proceed with ridge hike at Bumdra where there are two options. One is easy hike to conquer a small summit at 4,200 meters from 3,800 meters base camp. This takes about 3-4 hours for an average walker to attend the summit.

The other is a bit difficult since the summit to achieve will have longer distance in walking with higher elevation at 4,600 meters. This takes about 5-6 hours for an average walker. Whatsoever option you choose ultimately it’s the view you witness and in a clear day, the views will really be spectacular. Also make sure you put on some warm clothes for this hike as it’ll be very cold and windy. Overnight Camp.(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner included)

Day 05: Trek back to Paro via Taktsang Monastery (3,120m) In the morning, visit the Bumdra Gompa, a small meditation monastery tucked on the side of an immense cliff face which was founded by the Tantric Buddhist Yogini Machig Labdron. Afterwads, begin the hike descending where the landscape transforms from the high country to dwarf rhododendron and beautiful vistas, giving way to the low lands of pine and oak. The hike then approaches the most popular Taktsang Monastery ‘Tiger’s Nest’, one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Bhutan which is perched in a vertical cliff defying all engineering logics. It’s believed that Guru Rinpoche arrive here on a back of a tigress in 8th century and meditated for 3 months. Overnight at Hotel.(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner included)

Day 06: Paro – Depart After breakfast, transfer to the airport to catch the onward flight. Bid farewell to the remote and legendary Dragon Kingdom disappears again behind its guardian mountains.(Breakfast only included)

bumdra trek

Bumdra Trek

  • Altitude: 2400 – 3800 mts
  • Best Season: March to May and September to November

While on this trek, besides the scenic beauty of Himalayan ranges you will be visiting the two most revered Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Bhutan, Bumdra and Taktshang Monastery. Bumdra means ‘Rock of One Hundred Thousand Foot Prints’. The legends say that a hundred thousand Dakinis (angels) descended here and left their footprints on the rock 800 years ago. Bumdra is about 3800m above sea level and the Taktshang Monastery is above 3100m above sea level.

The 2 Day Bumdra Trek:

Day 1: Sang Choekor Monastery – Bumdra Monastery 3-4 hours to camp, 2-3 hours optional return trek to peak (3800 mts)

Hike from Sang Choekor Buddhist College (2,800m) to Yak Pasture below Bumdra Monastery (3,800m). The adventure begins with an early morning drive up to the Sang Choekor to start the hike to Bumdra. The initial 1–2 hour ascent of a ridge can be steep but most part of it will be under cool shades. We will reach a clearing with prayer flags and enjoy a spectacular view of both Paro and Do Chhu valleys.

About 1-2 hours walk away is the Chhoe Chhoe Tse Lhakhang (temple); which nestles at the side of the mountain. The trail continues and when we reach the last steep elevation we will see a temple overlooking the views of Paro airport and the snow-capped Himalaya. After another 20 minutes of climbing through ruins and fluttering prayer flags, we hike into the ancient forest for about 40 minutes before we reach a wide meadow with sacred chortens and prayer flags. We will spend a night at Bumdra Monastery (the cave of a thousand prayers).

After lunch we can visit the monastery (if it is unoccupied) and climb towards the north of the peak (about 4000m) for a better view of the Himalayan before returning for dinner.

Day 2: Bumdra Monastery – Tiger’s Nest 2-3 hours hike to Tiger’s Nest

After a hearty breakfast in the jaw dropping landscape, it is time to either head straight back into the valley or linger awhile soaking up the view and perhaps hang some prayer flags of our own. Eventually we have to drop back into the ancient pine and rhododendron forest on the monks’ zig zagging trail. After 1-2 hours of descent we catch glimpses of the golden roofs of temples below and soon come upon the first of many on our way back from the wilds.

The path snakes across the mountainside between the monasteries and temples before reaching the gardens of Sangtopelri (Heaven on Earth) from which you can bravely peer over edge and straight down onto the ornate roofs Taktsang in the cliff far below. An hour later and we are at the gates of Taktsang looking across the gorge a steep descent to a waterfall then ascent on steps and you are passing into the Tiger’s Nest itself.

(Start from Sangachhoekhor Shedra.. The hike is approximately three and half hours. Bumdra campsite is an elevation of 3, 800 meters above the sea level. We stop for our lunch at a small ‘ Tshamkhang’ or hermitage en route. After lunch, merely an hour will to get us to our campsite, which means we have plenty of time to explore and amble around. On reaching the camp site, we take a tea break and if you are up for it we can go visit an ancient sky burial site further up the mountain top.

Sky burial is a funeral practice in which the human corpse is placed on a mountaintop to decompose while exposed to the elements or to be eaten by scavenging animals, especially carrion birds. The function of the sky burial is simply to dispose of the remains in as generous a way as possible and to give even in death, but the practice has become obsolete today. )

Trekking Rates For Bhutan

The government of Bhutan requires that a minimum standard needs to be maintained while trekking in Bhutan. You will be accompanied by your own trekking staff consisting of a professional trekking guide, cook, camping assistant and a few horsemen and horses to carry your gear; regardless of whether you’re a solo trekker or you are a part of a bigger group. All food supplies must be carried in and prepared in camp. Trekking in Bhutan can therefore be a little expensive for solo travelers and those traveling in smaller groups.

TREKKING SURCHAGE PER PERSON ON TOP OF SDF, GUIDE & VEHICLE CHARGES:

1 Pax: USD 250 Per Person Per Day 2 Pax: USD 200 Per Person Per Day 3 Pax: USD 180 Per Person Per Day 4 Pax or More: USD 160 Per Person Per Day

PRICE INCLUDES :

  • 4 season mountaineering tents. (Mountain Hardware Trango ll).
  • Freshly prepared meals with tea and snacks throughout the trek.
  • All trekking logistics like dinning tent with utensils, chairs and tables, toilet tent, etc.
  • Sleeping bag and blankets
  • Fully seasoned support team.
  • Portage charges.
  • Filtered/boiled drinking water throughout the trek.
  • Hot washing water in the mornings and evenings.
  • Hot water bags for the night.
  • Individual footprint foam mattress.
  • Communal first aid kit (We always carry multiple oxygen canisters for emergency scenarios).

DOES NOT INCLUDE:

  • Personal snacks, drinks and equipment
  • Gratuity for staff.

A TYPICAL DAY ON THE TREK :

The day starts off with a wake up call, around 6-6:30 am, if you are not already awake by then. A staff will come with a bowl of warm water to wash up along with tea/coffee brought to your tent. Before heading over to the dinning tent for breakfast, usually around 7-8, we suggest you pack your overnight gear into your duffel bag and prepare for the day. During breakfast the staff will pack away the tents and ready the horses.

After breakfast, usually between 8:30-9 am, we start walking.  The pace of the trek is leisurely with plenty of time to enjoy the scenery, take photos and explore the local settlements, if any. Lunch will be around noon at a favourable spot by the side of the trail. Lunch is carried by the staff.

There is usually more walking after lunch, we will always plan to cover big ascents/passes before lunch but this does not always pan out as expected. Normally we will get into camp by mid afternoon with the tents already set up by the support team. Once you arrive at camp, you will be able to wash up, change to get into your comfy camp clothes and try and get comfortable.

Tea and snacks will be served. Followed by dinner later in the evening around 7pm.

All meals are freshly prepared by our cook and kitchen team. Breakfast with fried rice, toast/pancakes with various condiments, omelettes and a range of hot drinks. Hot lunch is prepared by the kitchen crew during breakfast and packed into containers carried by the staff to be eaten on the trail. On arrival at the campsite, there will be tea and other hot drinks in the dining tent with biscuits and snacks, help yourselves. Dinner will follow with soup, meal and dessert.

ACUTE MOUNTAIN SICKNESS (AMS).

This happens due to the body’s reaction to the low air pressure (less oxygen) at high altitudes and each individual responds to this situation differently. So please ascent at your own steady pace so that you allow your body to acclimate as you gain elevation.

This is a problem for some people, especially when hiking and sleeping above 3500 meters. The onset of symptoms has no logic in the sense that you never know who will get it regardless of your previous climbs and high ascents. There is no natural way to avoid getting AMS. However, acclimatization before the trek (we recommend day hikes, climbing high and sleeping low) and staying hydrated, eating and sleeping (rest) well on the trek goes a long to keeping yourself fit and feeling good.

Usually a steady and throbbing headache at the back of your head is a telltale sign of the onset of AMS. But this is not a major concern if it does not develop further and persists. Other symptoms include: fatigue, shortness of breathe, loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping and vomiting. There is no treatment to this sickness other than letting the body rest, acclimate and cure itself. If the symptoms do not get better, we will descend in altitude.

PACKING LIST AND TIPS :

They say we pack our fears when we travel and thus all of us pack different and are each their own creatures of comfort. But the rule of thumb on treks is to keep it to the essentials and be organized.

Less things to pack in the morning means, being swift and at ease which translates to a few more cups of coffee while enjoying the morning sun.

Therefore only listing the essentials here.

THE ESSENTIALS

  • DAS BOOT : Your favourite hiking boot or shoe. One that is broken in and kept you on the trail, blister free, while hitting the gnarly stuff. A pair with good ankle support that breathes well and to a certain extent is water resistant, keeps your feet happy!
  • THE FART SACK : I mean the sleeping bag. Check where and when you are going and take something that is rated lower by 5ºC than the expected temperature, just be on the warmer and safer side. Women typical tend to sleep colder than men.
  • MATTRESS: A foldable and comfortable mat, ideally an inflatable mattress. After a long day, you just want some good sleep. One that can be packed away inside your duffle bag or secured on the outside with the straps (easier for us to stow away and load it onto the horses). We will provide a footprint foam mat.
  • DAY PACK : Just like your boots, a backpack is something you wear almost throughout the day and the entirety of your trek. So take a pack that you are comfortable with. A 20-30 L pack is ideal, depending on the gear you carrying.
  • CLOTHING : Apart from the clothes you are comfortable with, a rain jacket or a poncho that can double up as a windbreaker, is indispensable. Micro climates in the mountains are an enigma. So its always nice to be prepared, that way the rain doesn’t feel so bad and you can slog on with a grin on your face. Another essential is a down jacket, to throw over yourself while at camp after the sun goes down.
  • MEDICATION : Please don’t forget you personal medication . Also a small personal first aid kit. You may never need them, but it can prove to be crucial for your wellbeing incase you do while on the trail. We will also have a common first aid with only the essential medicine and kit.
  • HEADLAMPS/TORCH:
  • GLOVES & BEANIES
  • SUNSCREEN, SUN GLASSES AND HAT
  • WATER BOTTLES
  • A PACKABLE PILLOW

Bumdra Monastery Treks - 2 or 3 day options

bumdra trek

Introduction:

Trekking in Bhutan is unlike anywhere else in the Himalayas. Whether taking an easy flat stroll or an arduous hike, guests may experience crystal clear air, sensational views and very often have the trek route to themselves. All parties are accompanied by a trained guide, a cook, an assistant, at least one horseman and all treks are accommodated in tented campsites. Trekkers rarely have to carry more than a day pack as horses and yaks carry all provisions and most of the guest’s belongings.

Bumdra Monastery Trek: Option 1 – 2 days / 1 night.

Trek Rating:  MODERATE – means hard in places and good fitness required. Maximum Altitude : 3,900-4000 metres.

On the Bumdra Trek, trekkers will spend two (or 3) days traversing the area around the Bumdra Monastery. After driving to the trek point from your hotel, trekkers climb up to the temple and enjoy lunch and beautiful valley views. Higher up is the campsite and it is here that guests may learn why this trek is also called the “Trek of Thousand Dakinis (celestial female beings.)” Trekkers have the opportunity to explore the caves where the thousand dakinis had convened. In the descent from camp, trekkers will visit a number of temples including a hill top nunnery and the iconic Taktsang Monastery. Beautiful views of the Taktsang temple complex may be seen on the descent.

Please remember you must add at least 3 additional nights in Bhutan to complete this  2 day / 1 night trek. Two nights prior to commencement of trek (minimum duration required for acclimatisation purposes) & one night post trek before your departure from Bhutan.

Private Trek Tour Itinerary Overview.

Option 1: 2 days/1 night trek

  • 2 nights Thimphu with sightseeing & day hiking
  • 1 night Bumdra Trek
  • 1 night Paro valley

Option 2: 3 days/ 1 night trek

  • 2 nights Bumdra Trek

Day 1: Bumdra Monastery Trek

Hike from Sang Choekor Buddhist College in the Paro valley (2,800 m) to Yak pasture where we camp below Bumdra Monastery (3,800 m)

The adventure begins with an early morning drive up to the Sang Choekor to meet our ponies; while they are being loaded we may pay our respects at the college. The initial one to two-hour ascent of a shady, forested ridge, brings us to a clearing with prayer flags and views down into both the Paro and Do Chhu Valleys.

Above and ahead the Chhoe Tse Lhakhang (temple) nestles on the mountainside a further one to two hour’s walk away. The trail undulates before the last steep section up to the pretty temple which may offer commanding views south over Paro and northwards to the snowcapped Himalayas.

After a final 20-minute climb through ruins and fluttering prayer flags, we plunge back into ancient forest, and, after traversing for about 40 minutes, we come out onto a high wide meadow dotted with sacred chortens and prayer flags.

Our home for the night is tucked away just under Bumdra Monastery (Cave of a Thousand Prayers) and may offer unimpeded views of the Himalayan range. After lunch we can visit the monastery (if it is occupied) and also climb the peak to the north (about 4000 m) for potentially even better views, returning in time for a well earned dinner.

Duration: 4–5 hours to camp depending on fitness, optional 2–3 hours return trek to peak Difficulty: Moderate, guided with picnic.

Overnight: Tented Campsite

Day 2: bumdra monastery trek.

Return hike from Bumdra Monastery camp via Zangto Pelri Monastery & Taktsang Monastery.

After a hearty breakfast, it is time to either head straight back into the valley or spend a little extra time soaking up the view. Eventually we have to drop back into the ancient pine and rhododendron forest on the monks’ zig-zagging trail.

After one to two hours of descent we catch glimpses of the golden roofs of temples below. The path snakes across the mountainside between these monasteries before reaching the gardens of Zangto Pelri (Heaven on Earth) from which you can, if you are brave, peer over the edge, straight down onto the ornate rooftops of Taktsang Monastery perched against the cliff-face far below.

An hour later and we are across the gorge from Taktsang Monastery. Follow a steep descent to a waterfall then up some steps and you’ll reach the Tiger’s Nest itself. Retracing our steps we begin the final descent of about 45 minutes to Paro Valley floor to reach our vehicle from where you will be transferred by road to your overnight accommodation.

Duration: 5 – 7 hours depending on time taken in monasteries Difficulty: Moderate

Bumdra Monastery Trek: Option 2 – 3 days / 2 nights.

This trek operates as per the 2 day/1 night version above, except adds a day at leisure in the Bumdra Lhakang area where you can visit the Lhakang and have an audience with the monks engaged in prayer and meditation.

In this monastery you have a clear view of the cave believed to have 100,000 footprints of Dakanis  – Goddess & fairies. After your Lhakang visit climb the nearby ridge for approx 30 minutes for a  potentially magnificent view of sacred Mt Jhomolhari (mountain of the Goddess) along with other Himalayan peaks and also the sky burial site, still used today.

Overnight: Overnight Campsite.

The Dzong is located in the heart of the town and a few minute walk through Nyimazam, one of the few last remaining traditional cantilever bridges in Bhutan. Dzongs serve as both monastic institutions and district administrative offices.

Located above the Dzong is the National Museum that houses various antiques and artifacts of Bhutan and provides a glimpse into Bhutan’s cultural and religious history.

Visit the 3 storied Dungtse Lhakhang/temple, built in the mid 1430’s by Thangtong Gyalpo, an iron bridge builder, to subdue a demon and the temple is believed that it is firmly chained to the ground. The three floors of the temple represent hell, heaven and earth and house some of the finest murals in Bhutan.

Overnight at your hotel in Paro

From your hotel, drive for about 20 minutes till you reach the road end at Sangchhoekor Buddhist College perched on a hill top at 2,800 meters. Visit the temple and and you can also interact with the monks most of who speak a little English. It is a beautiful hike with sweeping views of the Paro valley, the Himalayan ranges and meadows adorned with prayer flags till you reach the Campsite just below the Bum Drak Monastery. You can rest and relax at your campsite or hike a little uphill for sweeping views of the surrounding landscape.

Enjoy the beautiful sunrise from your campsite and after a hearty breakfast start your hike towards the sacred Tiger’s Nest Monastery. The trail is through forests of rhododendron and pine trees and is a moderately leisurely hike. Most of the tourists only visit the main temples at the Tiger’s Nest, however you are a lucky few to be able to visit the temples on the top particularly the Zangdopelri temple. Zangdopelri means or is the mystical Glorious Copper Colored Mountain of Guru Rinpoche and you can enjoy a bird’s eye view of the other temples far below.

After visiting the temples on the top, hike further down to visit the main temples and gradually climb down till you reach the base where your vehicle and driver waits to take you to your hotel.

After breakfast drive to Paro International Airport where your guide and driver will bid you farewell and hope you had a pleasant holiday and hope to see you in Bhutan again.

The flight to Paro is one of the most spectacular in entire Himalayas. Whether flying along the Himalayan range from Kathmandu or over the foothills from Kolkatta, the journey offers fascinating views and an exciting descent into the Kingdom. Bhutan’s first gift as you disembark from the aircraft will be cool, clean fresh mountain air. After immigration formalities and baggage collection, you will be met by our representative, and afterwards drive to Thimphu, the capital town of Bhutan.

Shortly before reaching Chuzom, you will see on your left Tamchog Lhakhang , a temple built by Thangtong Gyalpo, a pioneering engineer who introduced the construction of suspension bridges into Bhutan and Tibet (several of which are still in use today). The present bridge to Tamchog Lhakhang was restored in 2005 in the design of a traditional style with iron chains and crossing this iron bridge is a mesmerising experience.

Drive further with en-route stopping at Chuzom, the confluence of Thimphu and Paro rivers. Three different styles of stupas; Tibetan, Nepalese and Bhutanese adorn this confluence.

The capital town of Bhutan and the centre of Government, religion and commerce, Thimphu is a unique city with unusual mixture of modern development alongside ancient traditions. Home to civil servants, expatriates and monk body, Thimphu maintains a strong national character in its architectural style.

On arrival in Thimphu, check into the hotel.

Later in afternoon walk around  National Memorial Chorten , a large white structure crowned with a golden spire. It is located close to the center of Thimphu city and is one of its most iconic monuments. This is the most ideal spot to interact with locals who throng in large numbers to circumambulate the chorten, whirl the large red prayer wheels and pray at a small shrine inside the gate. The paintings and statues inside the monument provide a deep insight into Buddhist philosophy.

Afterwards an exploratory walk around Thimphu main street and market area.

Overnight at the hotel in Thimphu (Altitude 2,320m).

Morning after breakfast, drive to see the iconic gigantic  Buddha Dordenma  (Vajra seated), the world’s largest sitting bronze statue. Majestically situated at Kuenselphodrang, it is an object of great veneration to all sentient beings. The land at Kuenselphodrang measuring 145 acres was gifted to Monks Body by His Majesty the Fourth King of Bhutan. The Park conserves 798.4 acres of forest area that surrounds the Buddha Dordenma statue. Dedicating it to the 60th birth anniversary celebration of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, His Holiness the Je Khenpo consecrated the 201 feet tall Buddha Dordenma statue at the Kuenselphodrang on 24th September 2015.

Then drive to Bhutan Postal Museum showcasing the progress of postal services and also to some extent communication system in Bhutan & country’s rare and unique stamps issued over the years. One can also visit the Postal office located next door to get own personalised stamps made and check out various souvenirs.

Textile Museum , next in schedule is worth a visit to experience the living national art of weaving. Bhutanese textiles are an integral part of its cultural and heritage and are unique for their diversity and sophistication. Textile Museum, established in 2001 under the royal patronage of Her Majesty Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck has given a new platform to the nation’s textiles and to Bhutanese weavers and boasts of an invaluable collection of antique textile artifacts of the country. The museum has opened its exhibition on six major themes - warp pattern weaves, weft pattern weaves, role of textiles in religion, achievements in textile arts, textiles from indigenous fibers and the royal collection.

Post lunch visit Institute for Zorig Chusum , commonly known as Arts & Crafts School or Painting School, the Institute offers a six-year course on the 13 traditional arts and crafts of Bhutan. On a visit, one can see students learning the various skills taught at the school.

Continue on to Folk Heritage Museum . The Museum is dedicated to connecting people with the rich Bhutanese Folk heritage and rural history through exhibits, demonstrations, educational programs and documentation of Bhutanese rural life.

Located below the main town,  Centenary Farmers Market  popularly known as Weekend market is a pleasant, colourful & delightful place to mingle with locals. Farmers come from all over the country to sell their farm products in this market. Also available here are the handicrafts and artifacts, to purchase.

Conclude the sightseeing of the day with visit to Trashichhoedzong , ‘fortress of the glorious religion’. This is the center of Government and religion, site of monarch’s throne room and seat of Je Khenpo or Chief Abbot. Built in 1641 by the political and religious unifier of Bhutan, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it was reconstructed in 1960s in traditional Bhutanese manner, without nails or architectural plans.

Before returning to the hotel, take leisurely walk to Local Crafts Bazaar , established under patronage of Department of Cottage & Small Industry and in collaboration with the Department of Culture, Tourism Council and the Department of Agriculture Marketing and Co-operatives. This market offers genuine Bhutanese arts & crafts thus contributing to promotion, protection and preservation of traditional arts.

Overnight at the hotel in Thimphu (Altitude 2,320m).

After breakfast, drive up to Dochu-la pass (3,088m/ 10,130 ft) stopping briefly here to take in the view and admire the chorten, mani wall, and prayer flags which decorate the highest point on the road. If skies are clear, the following peaks can be seen from this pass (left to right): Masagang (7,158m), Tsendagang (6,960m), Terigang (7,060m), Jejegangphugang (7,158 m), Kangphugang (7,170 m), Zongphugang (7, 060 m), a Table Mountain that dominates the isolated region of Lunana - finally Gangkar puensum, the highest peak in Bhutan at 7,570m.

At Dochula Pass, 108 chortens or stupas known as Druk Wangyal Chortens have been built by Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk, the eldest Queen Mother. These chortens are built in three layers, the first lowest level layer has forty-five chortens, the second has thirty-six and the top layer has twenty-seven, built around the main chorten.

Progressing further explore parts of Royal Botanical Park . It is the first botanical park in Bhutan and forms the backdrop of the Dochula Pass.

Later drive onward to Punakha.

Punakha served as the capital of Bhutan and seat of government until 1955 and still it is the winter seat of Je Khenpo (the chief abbot). Blessed with temperate climate and owing to its natural drainage from Pho Chhu (male) and Mo Chhu (female) rivers, the fertile Punakha valley produces abundant crops and fruits. Located at an elevation of 1300m above sea level, Punakha enjoys mild winters and is popular year-round destination.

Afternoon visit Punakha Dzong or 'Palace of Great Happiness', built at the junction of the Pho chu and Mo chu rivers in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. This majestic Dzong served as both the religious and the administrative centre of Bhutan in the past. It measures some 600 by 240 feet and has a six-story, gold-domed tower. Inside are courtyards and religious statuary that hint at the depth of history and spiritual tradition embodied here. Your guide will illuminate your understanding of this intricate culture that is exotic to us, though long established here.

Then a short excursion to Chimi Lhakhang or ‘Fertility Temple’.

The Chimi Lhakhang (temple), situated on a round hillock in the centre of Punakha valley near Lobesa, was built in 1499 by the 14th Drukpa hierarch, Ngawang Choegyel, after the site was blessed by the maverick saint Drukpa Kuenley who in the late 15th century used humour, songs and outrageous behaviour to dramatize his teachings and due to this also known as ‘Divine Madman’.

The Lhakhang is situated about 10 km from centre of Punakha town near Sopsokha village, from where a 20-minute walk through fields of mustards and rice, leads to a hillock that is the site of temple. Prayer flags are lined all along the road from the tiny village hamlet known as Yowakha, along a stream to the monastery. All houses in the village are decorated with paintings of phalluses on their exterior walls.

Evening explore newly developed Wangdue town and its local market.

Overnight at the hotel in Punakha (Altitude 1,300m).

After breakfast, a beautiful hike takes one to the regal Khamsum Yuelley Namgel Chorten , which was built to remove negative forces and promote peace, stability and harmony in the changing world. The Chorten dominates the upper Punakha Valley with commanding views across the Mo Chhu and up towards the mountainous peaks of Gasa and beyond.

Picnic lunch by riverside enjoying fascinating views all around.

Post lunch, visit Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang Nunnery . Perched on a ridge amid pine trees and overlooking valleys of Punakha and Wangdue gleams Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup temple. It houses a 14-foot main bronze statue of Avalokiteshvara and of Guru Padmasambhava, Gautam Buddha, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, Tsela Namsum, the 21 Taras and Tsepamay (Buddha of longevity). The temple complex also houses a permanent higher learning and meditation centre for nuns where, apart from religious training, it provides life skill training such as tailoring, embroidery, statue making and thangkha painting.

Then excursion to Talo village , which is scattered along the hill slopes and known for its cleanliness and hygiene among Punakha villages. Talo is the seat of the mind incarnations of the Zhabdrung. Talo Sangnacholing Dzong is built on a plateau and has majestic view of surrounding villages. The beautiful farmhouses of the village have its own flower gardens and, on the hill, slope corns and sweet peas are grown in abundance. Spend time at Nobgang and Talo villages visiting farmhouses and meeting families, experiencing Bhutanese rural life.

Overnight at the hotel in Punakha (Altitude 1,300m).

After breakfast, drive to Paro along scenic highway. En route visit handsomely proportioned Simtokha Dzong , built in 1629 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and modelled on Gyal Gyad Tshel Institute of Ralung (Tibet). Officially known as Sangak Zabdhon Phodrang (Palace of the Profound Meaning of Secret Mantras), Simtokha is often said to be the first Dzong built in Bhutan. It is in fact also the oldest Dzong to have survived as a complete structure.

On arrival in Paro, check into the hotel.

The beautiful valley of Paro encapsulates within itself a rich culture, scenic beauty and hundreds of myths and legends. It is home to many of Bhutan’s oldest temples and monasteries, National Museum and country’s only international airport. Mount. Chomolhari (7,314m) reigns in white glory at the northern end of the valley and its glacial water plunge through deep gorges to form Pa Chhu (Paro River). Paro is also one of the most fertile valleys in the Kingdom producing a bulk of the locally famous red rice from its terraced fields.

After lunch, proceed to visit Ta Dzong , originally built as Watchtower, which now houses National Museum. The extensive collection includes antique thangkha paintings, textiles, weapons & armour, household objects and a rich assortment of natural and historic artifacts.

Ta Dzong visit immediately followed by a short walk down the trail to visit Rinpung Dzong (Paro Dzong), meaning (‘fortress of the heap of jewels’), which has a long and fascinating history. Along the wooden galleries lining the inner courtyard are fine wall paintings illustrating Buddhist lore such as four friends, the old man of long life, the wheel of life, scenes from the life of Milarepa, Mount. Sumeru and cosmic Mandala.

Evening explore Paro city centre and market area.

Overnight at the hotel in Paro (Altitude 2,280m).

Today, you will hike from Sang Choekor Buddhist College (2,800m) to yak pasture below Bumdra Monastery (3,800m). Legends has it that when the patron saint of Buddhism in Bhutan, Guru Rinpoche, arrived at a cave in Bumdra, a hundred thousand dakinis gathered to pay their homage to Guru Rinpoche, over 800 years ago. This is why Bumdra is a popular site for most locals for spiritual rejuvenation as well as for the beautiful hike into the beauty of the sweeping meadows and landscape.

The initial one to two hour ascent of a ridge, which is steep at times but in cool shade, brings us to region with prayer flags and views down into the Paro and Do Chhu river Valleys. Above and ahead, the Chhoe Tse Lhakhang (temple) nestles in the mountainside - a one to two hour walk away. The trail undulates for a while before the last steep pull up to the pretty temple which boasts commanding views south over Paro and northwards to the snow-capped Himalayas. After a final 20 minutes climb through ruins and fluttering prayer flags, we plunge back into ancient forest, traversing for about 40 minutes, coming out on a high wide meadow dotted with sacred chortens and prayer flags. Our overnight camp tonight would be near the Bumdra Monastery . After lunch we can visit the monastery and also climb the peak to the north (about 4,000m) for even better views, returning in time for dinner.

Overnight at Bumdra Wilderness Camp (3,800m).

Hike from Yak pasture below Bumdra Monastery (3,800m) via Sangtopelri Monasteries to Taktshang Monastery (2,900m):

Taktshang Lhakhang:   It is perched on the side of a cliff 900m above the Paro Valley floor, it is undoubtedly one of the most famous of Bhutan’s monasteries.  Lore has it that Guru Rinpoche arrived here on the back of a tigress and meditated at this monastery thus the name ‘Tiger’s Nest’.  This site has been recognized as a most sacred place and visited by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1646 and is now visited by all Bhutanese at least once in their lifetime.

Later in the afternoon, visit newly restored Drukgyel Dzong . Originally Built by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1646 to commemorate an early military victory over Tibetan invaders, the dzong name means, indeed, ‘victorious Druk’. Historically and strategically, this Dzong withstood all its glory and was featured in 1914 vide National Geographic magazine. The glory of Drukgyel Dzong remained even when it was destroyed by fire in 1951. On a clear day, one can see the commanding view of Mount. Chomolhari (7,314m) from the village, below the Dzong.

Later while driving towards Paro town en route visiting Kyichu Lhakhang. Kyichu is considered one of the holiest and the oldest shrines of the Kingdom dating back to 7th century (the other is Jambey Lhakhang in Bumthang). The lhakhang complex is composed of two temples. The first temple was built by Tibetan King, Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century and in 1968, H.M. Ashi Kesang, the Queen Mother of Bhutan, built the second temple in same original pattern. In the seventh century, Tibet was ruled by King Songsten Gompo, who in his attempt to suppress a demoness opposing Buddhist teachings built 108 temples in a day and Kyichu is one of them.

Overnight at the hotel in Paro (Altitude 2,280m).

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for flight to onward destination. Our representative will help you with exit formalities and bid you farewell.

Bumdra Trek Itinerary

Sangchen choekor shedra to bumdra.

The trek itself requires a degree of fitness as in some areas it can be difficult but as yak’s and horses carry all of the luggage except for your personal backpack it only requires a medium level of fitness. The trek depending on your specification can have the luxury of a bed set up or simple sleeping bags both of which give a unique take on the whole experience. The trek like most places in Bhutan have some flat areas and many uphill areas but regardless of where you are the scenic view is extraordinary. Certain parts where small stupas (A small structure containing religious artefacts inside) decorate the area showcasing the Bhutanese religious take of interacting with nature. In one area on the way to the start of the Bumdra trek in Punakha, there is 108 small statue along the way to the Dochula pass which many Bhutanese stops for a break and walk around to admire the sight. The Trek can start at Sang Choekor which is in Paro, which also has a Buddhist college known as Sang Choekor Lhakang where you can visit briefly and ask for a blessing for a good trek from the monks. After the blessings, the trek starts with the first landmark being Chhoe Tse Lhakang temple about 2 hours away. The trek starts in a forestry ridge where Bhutan's untouched nature is seen in all its beauty. This continues on till a clearing is reached with prayer flags serving as landmarks and a breathtaking view of Paro and Do Chhu valley.  The Chhoe Tse Lhakang when reached has a grand view of Paro valley and the snow-capped mountain ranges that surround Bhutan.  A small break is recommended to take in the view as after taking in the sights it takes 20 minutes to pass through the ruins and prayer flags to get back into the forest. After an hour traversing in the forest, an open meadow with religious chortens and prayer flags are the only sign of human influence in the untouched landscape.  From the meadow the Bumdra monastery where most people camp for the night is only a short while away after which reaching offers lunch and meditation practices. The beauty of Bumdra monastery and its surroundings is best seen as words can only provide the slightest understanding of its vistas.

Bumdra to Paro valley

After spending the night the trek route often takes people back to Paro through the Taktsang monastery which is described in another article as a short summary of which does not do it justice. The descent back into the valley of Paro is marked when the golden roof’s and the great monastery of Taksang is seen thus marking the end of the Bumdra trek. Though requiring a great deal of climbing the first day on trek, you will be rewarded with the spectacular views of the valley and the snow-capped mountains, the second day of the trek is relatively much easier with mostly descending.

Follow a steep descent to a waterfall then go up for 10 minutes and you’ll reach the Tiger’s Nest.
