Keith Mitchell gets his first PGA Tour win, taking Honda

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Keith Mitchell’s first and until now only win as a professional was three years ago, on something called the G Pro Tour.

As is the case with minitour life, hardly anybody was watching and hardly anybody noticed. He earned $5,600.

Those days are long gone. After 97 tries on the PGA Tour, the Web.com Tour and even the Latinoamerica Tour, Mitchell is finally a winner — and had to outslug two of the game’s best players for that long-awaited victory. A birdie on the par-5 18th on Sunday capped Mitchell’s win at The Honda Classic, where he held off Brooks Koepka and Rickie Fowler.

“It was awesome,” Mitchell said. “I wish that I could come up with a better word than that, but just having a chance to come down the stretch against Rickie Fowler and Brooks, those guys are the best in the world and they’ve been out here proving themselves. And I’m just pleased that I could prove myself against guys like that.”

Mitchell birdied four of his final seven holes, including a 15-footer on the last for a 3-under 67 and a 9-under 271 total. Koepka (66) and Fowler (67) made big charges as well on a wild and windy day at PGA National, yet settled for a tie for second at 8 under, one shot behind Mitchell.

Fowler gave Mitchell a warm embrace when they crossed paths after the final putt.

“Awesome guy,” Fowler said. “Obviously, a good enough player to win.”

Koepka and Fowler both birdied the 18th. Fowler actually birdied three of his final four holes, including a 45-footer on the 17th.

But Mitchell didn’t waver in the wind.

He was on the upslope of a fairway bunker about 205 yards from the pin for his second shot at the par-5 18th. All he could do from there was hit a pop-up, leaving him with a wedge in for his third.

That checked up about 15 feet below the hole, giving him a putt to win. He made it, pumped his fist and waited for the final group of Wyndham Clark and Vijay Singh to finish about five minutes later.

“Everybody dreams about having that putt on the 18th hole to win a tournament,” Mitchell said. “And I had it today.”

Ryan Palmer (63) and Lucas Glover (66) tied for fourth at 7 under. And for a while, it looked like Palmer might steal the tournament.

Palmer was tied for 48th after the opening round, tied for 51st after 36 holes and tied for 39th when the final round began. But he started with four straight birdies on the way to going out in 29 — the first player to ever do that in a final round at the Honda. He rolled in a 25-footer from just off the green for birdie at the par-4 16th, then stuck his tee shot to 6 feet and made birdie at the par-3 17th.

When he finished at 2:32 p.m., he was two shots back and the final group was on the fifth hole.

“I’ve got an outside chance, for sure,” Palmer said when he was done.

About two hours later, he was in the outright lead. Not long after that, he was in a six-way tie atop the leaderboard. And his chance lasted until 5:07 p.m., when Koepka tapped in for birdie on the last and took the clubhouse lead at 8 under.

Koepka was good. Fowler was good.

Mitchell was just one swing better.

“It was good for the fans,” said Koepka, the Palm Beach County native and two-time defending U.S. Open champion. “They got what they wanted, a good tournament, two of the bigger names coming down the stretch and having a chance to win. That’s what this golf course will do.”

Singh, the 56-year-old who was bidding to become the oldest winner of a PGA Tour event ever — Sam Snead was 52 when he won the 1965 Greater Greensboro Open — was right there until the end. Singh, who hasn’t won on this tour since 2008, settled for outright sixth after a 70.

Clark, the third-round leader, was two shots clear of everybody when he made an uphill putt from just right of the green on the par-4 4th, that birdie making him 9 under. But he made bogeys on four of his next eight holes, falling off the pace.

Mitchell is expected to climb into the top 70 of the world ranking. He was No. 162 entering the Honda, and had never been above No. 130.

That’s just one of many things that’ll change now.

His biggest check as a pro was for $400,400 last year when he finished third at the Byron Nelson. This check is more than triple that — $1,224,000. He’s going to the Masters. He’s exempt for two more seasons. He climbed into the top 20 in the season’s money list and FedEx Cup Points rankings.

And perhaps the biggest prize is this: Mitchell will never again have to wonder if he can win.

“Having status for a couple more years, putting myself in a really good position for the Tour Championship, getting to play in the four majors or some of them I guess ... I don’t even know what it gets me,” Mitchell said. “It’s awesome.”

DIVOTS: Cameron Tringale took a quintuple-bogey 8 on the par-3 17th, after hitting his tee ball into the water, then trying twice to unsuccessfully knock the ball out of the water, before retreating back toward the tee for a drop. By the time he was done, two groups —including Koepka’s— were waiting on the tee to play. ... Defending champion Justin Thomas shot 71 to tie for 30th.

Who is Keith Mitchell? Bio for the 2024 Valspar Championship leader

keith mitchell pga tour wins

Keith Mitchell is the leader of the 2024 Valspar Championship and carries a two-shot lead into the final round at Innisbrook Resort's Copperhead Course near Tampa, Fla. After winning once in his career already, Keith Mitchell could have another huge breakthrough.

You may know Keith Mitchell as the winner of the 2019 Honda Classic at PGA National.

Mitchell is 32 years old, and he is in the field at Valspar Championship because he is a top-70 finisher on the PGA Tour FedEx Cup last season.

For Mitchell, his journey to the PGA Tour is a remarkable story.

Mitchell was born in Chattanooga, Tenn. He played college golf at the University of Georgia before making his way into the world of professional golf.

Mitchell is hitting his prime

Keith Mitchell has won at every level, including as an amateur and after he turned pro in 2014.

Mitchell earned his first PGA Tour win in March 2019 at the Honda Classic. He has had other close calls to win, including at Pebble Beach, but he is yet to hoist that second trophy.

Entering this week, Mitchell was ranked 62nd in FedEx Cup points and ranked 72nd in the Official World Golf Ranking.

In his personal life, Mitchell is married to his wife, Claire.

What a win at the Valspar Championship means

With a win today, Mitchell would earn the benefits of being a PGA Tour winner , including a five-year PGA Tour exemption. He is already exempt into all four majors, including the US Open for 10 years and the other three for five years. And, according to the 2024 Valspar Championship payout , he would win $1.512 million to top it all off.

Find out what clubs Keith Mitchell used to capture his maiden PGA Tour title at The Honda Classic on Sunday

Keith Mitchell clinched his first victory on Tour with a final-hole birdie at PGA National that saw him beat out Rickie Fowler and Brooks Koepka by a single shot.

The 27-year-old American switched to a TaylorMade Spide Tour X putter for the week and it was a gamble that paid off, using it to hole a 15-footer on the last to win the trophy despite being ranked 218th in SG: Putting on Tour this season.

“I was trying to focus on what was going on,” Mitchell told NBC afterwards. “My mind was starting to wander at the end. … I tried to focus on what the putt was doing, the read and the speed and I was able to do it and hit a great putt.”

In addition to his TaylorMade putter, Mitchell led the field  in strokes gained/tee-to-green this week thanks to a combination of Mizuno and Titleist golf clubs and Pro V1 golf ball.

Mitchell had an average driving disance of 314 yards and an impressive accuracy percentage of 71.43% during the final round at PGA National, and used Mizuno’s new ST190 model.

He also used Mizuno’s MP-18 irons, while gaming two different woods from Titleist and three Vokey wedges.

Find out below the clubs he used to win The Honda Classic.

Keith Mitchell reposts viral video of himself that was taken down by PGA Tour, wins over Golf Twitter

At some point ahead of Sunday's final round of the 2023 Players Championship, the PGA Tour took down a clip of Keith Mitchell from Friday's second round that had been posted by someone on Twitter. What's the big deal? Well, it was a pretty entertaining clip. And this is just the latest example of a troubling trend that's been happening for years.

RELATED: Keith Mitchell seemed legitimately pissed over Aaron Rodgers' handicap

To be clear, the PGA Tour is well within its rights to do this under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (More commonly known as DMCA). But it's also well within the rights of golf fans to complain about the "cops" or the "fun police" showing up every time it happens. And, yes, Golf Twitter always notices.

But by Sunday afternoon, our tight-knit community had back that amusing (at least, to us) video of Mitchell doing a vicious club slam after hitting a drive into the water right before a loud horn alerting play was being suspended sounded. And we also had a new hero in . . . Keith Mitchell?

Yep, the PGA Tour winner provided the biggest twist of this tournament yet by reposting the video himself. And poking fun of the entire situation:

RELATED: Colt Knost was NOT happy about having his course record broken

Well played, Keith. The 31-year-old may have hit a poor shot in that clip and lost his cool, but he won over a bunch of new fans. And it will only help the man Golf Twitter has dubbed Cashmere Keith in the Player Impact Program standings, so really, it's a pretty savvy move.

Whether or not this leads to any sort of bigger policy change from the tour regarding these videos remains to be seen. But having one of its own players rebel like this can't hurt. Thanks, Keith. Not all heroes wear capes—some wear cashmere.

Why this Tour winner is fittingly nicknamed ‘Cashmere’ Keith

On this week’s episode of Subpar, hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz swapped out their usual single-guest hot seat for a handful of the game’s most colorful characters.

At the Tito’s Shorties Classic in Austin, Texas, on Oct. 26, Stoltz hung out with Joel Dahmen, Harry Higgs, Keith Mitchell and the Bob Does Sports crew. Despite the pouring rain, these guys still seemed to have fun.

Stoltz opened the interview by assigning nicknames to his first three guests: “Cashmere” Keith Mitchell, “The Big Rig” Harry Higgs, and … Joel “Cool-Ass Dude” Dahmen? The group got a nice laugh out of that one.

Joel Dahmen, Harry Higgs break down famous WM Phoenix Open celebration

While the nicknames are pretty self-explanatory, some fans might be wondering about “Cashmere” Keith. The conversation quickly turned to the look Mitchell sported for the interview, which Stoltz noticed included an extra button.

Higgs said he always wears a four-button polo and buttons one button. Mitchell said he could count seven buttons on his shirt if he counted the ones at the collar. Mitchell even schooled the group on the difference between a lapel and a placket.

“Keith is bringing fashion to the men’s game,” Higgs said. “You and Adam Scott, that’s it. The only guys who can pull off fashion.”

Mitchell then encouraged Higgs to try sporting a visor. Higgs declined because he said he has visible bald spots.

Dahmen joked that, despite the fact that he’s worn a bucket hat for years, no one on Tour seems to be following his trend.

The group clearly enjoys each other’s company, which makes for a fun listen. For more from the gang, including a breakdown of Dahmen and Higg’s viral WM Phoenix Open celebration , check out the entire episode of Subpar below.

FedExCup update: Keith Mitchell, Davis Riley eye last-minute push to Playoffs

Bubble pressure will be magnified on marathon sunday at wyndham championship.

Change Text Size

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Keith Mitchell is one of golf’s preeminent sports fans, and he drew an apt comparison after a second-round 64 on Saturday at the water-logged Wyndham Championship.

There are two minutes left in the fourth quarter, so to speak. Mitchell has the ball, but he trails by nine. He needs a touchdown, a recovery and a field goal to reach his desired outcome. Lofty perhaps, but don’t count him out.

Mitchell stood outside the cut line after an even-par 70 to begin the FedExCup Regular Season finale, but he surged up the board in Saturday’s second round (Thursday was completely washed out due to Tropical Storm Debby, backing up the week’s cadence). It meant he has plenty to play for Sunday, and perhaps Monday, as he looks to keep a six-year FedExCup Playoffs streak alive.

Mitchell maintained a relaxed physical appearance Saturday afternoon, his shirt’s top few buttons left unbuttoned, which perhaps downplayed the status implications of the next day and a half. The University of Georgia alum entered the week at No. 78 on the FedExCup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List, needing a two-way tie for seventh at minimum (and likely more) to qualify for his seventh straight postseason.

“It's all or nothing really,” Mitchell said after signing his card early Saturday afternoon,

There’s a flurry of activity around the FedExCup Playoffs bubble, with the top 70 on the FedExCup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List after the Wyndham Championship qualifying for next week’s Playoffs-opening FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis.

This week’s bubble pressure and accompanying weather uncertainty have induced off-script proceedings at Sedgefield Country Club. The opening round began at 9:50 a.m. Friday, after a “Herculean” effort from the club staff and volunteers to bring the course back into playable condition, and there was also a one-hour delay Saturday morning after unexpected overnight storms in North Carolina. It has made for a marathon weekend at the Wyndham; the second round will be completed Sunday morning, with the third round (in threesomes off two tees) set to begin mid-morning. The fourth round will begin mid-afternoon, and although there’s a slight chance the tournament could be completed at dusk Sunday evening, the more likely realm is a Monday finish.

Keith Mitchell curves in uphill putt for birdie at Wyndham

Amidst the logistical juggling, the FedExCup Playoffs bubble is rapidly shifting as well, with the seventh-year TOUR pro Mitchell among those seeking a late-stage push to Memphis. A good friend of Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, Mitchell wants the proverbial ball and relishes these moments. His second-round performance at Sedgefield was a good start, but he knows a couple more low rounds will be necessary.

“I felt like I've had a good season and kind of faltered at some high points and cost me a bunch of points on Sunday,” Mitchell said. “I’ve made the Playoffs every year I've been on TOUR. This will be the first time if I don't make it, so just kind of figured I'd just go all out. I'm kind of playing from behind and it's no fun to do that, you've just got to kind of dig deep and do the best you can.”

Reigning Charles Schwab Challenge winner Davis Riley applied a similar mindset in Saturday’s second round, carding a 4-under 66 to move to 5 under and keep his Playoffs hopes alive. Riley entered the week at No. 71 on the FedExCup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List, just three points behind No. 70 Victor Perez but knowing he needed to make the cut – and likely more – to qualify for Memphis. Riley was 2 under for the tournament with seven holes to play Friday, needing to make something happen (the cut will likely settle at 4 under), and he delivered under pressure with three birdies in the next six holes and an 8-footer for par on his final hole.

Riley felt under the weather Wednesday night into Thursday, and although he figured he would have gutted it out if play happened as originally scheduled Thursday, he was grateful for the day off to rest up and build back his strength. He exuded relief as he met the media after his second round, knowing his postseason hopes were still alive.

“It's a big round,” Riley said afterward. “It's very hot out here and it was honestly one of the toughest rounds of golf I've played. I've been a little bit under the weather the last couple days and I was grinding out there … I'm exhausted. To play the weekend and hopefully put together a Playoffs berth would be big time.”

Davis Riley trickles in 19-foot birdie putt at Wyndham

In contrast to players near the bubble, like Mitchell and Riley, those like Chad Ramey (11 under) need something special to qualify for the Playoffs. Ramey entered the week at No. 104 on the FedExCup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List, needing a solo second at minimum to advance.

With his family in attendance – including dad Stanley, who once caddied him to a Korn Ferry Tour victory and has been a close swing confidant through the years – Ramey has put on a show thus far. He knows he needs the keep the pedal down in his Playoffs push, but he’s grateful for a chance; he has worked through a swing change this season and knew the results could be uneven for some time. Perhaps the changes are coming together at the right time.

“I'm going to go see the physio guys and might go do an ice bath and then just rest,” Ramey said afterward, “because I know tomorrow's going to be a long one.”

Buckle up, golf fans. The FedExCup Regular Season has reached the two-minute warning, and several possessions could yet remain.

Chad Ramey makes birdie putt at Wyndham

An 18th straight appearance in the FedExCup Playoffs remains a possibility for Matt Kuchar after he fired a second-straight 64 at Sedgefield to grab the lead at 12 under at the Wyndham Championship.

Kuchar came into the FedExCup Regular Season finale ranked No. 111 on the FedExCup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List, and only a victory will send him to TPC Southwind next week for the FedEx St. Jude Championship. He arrived in Greensboro with momentum, too, after a tie for third at the 3M Open two weeks ago, his first top-10 of the season.

Kuchar, who is 46 years old, hasn’t won since the 2019 Sony Open in Hawaii. When he tees off on Sunday in search of his 10th TOUR victory, Kuchar is faced with the prospect of a 36-hole finale after Tropical Storm Debby forced the first round to be postponed until Friday.

But Kuchar isn’t worried after finishing as the medalist at U.S. Open Final Qualifying at The Bear’s Club in Jupiter, Florida earlier this summer.

“Able to walk 36 in the heat and humidity without too much problem,” Kuchar said. “This place has a few more hills, but I still feel good about my health, my fitness, ability to try to go in this heat and humidity.

“Glad I grew up in central Florida and know this stuff pretty well. Tonight you try to hydrate as best as you can to make tomorrow a little easier.”

3M Open winner Jhonattan Vegas entered the week at No. 66 on the FedExCup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List, just within the top 70 bubble. After carding an even-par 70 in Round 1, he made the turn in 1-over 36 in Round 2. Vegas rallied with five birdies for a closing 5-under 30, and his second-round 4-under 66 moved him onto the cut line at 4-under. Though Vegas is projected to move from No. 66 to No. 69, he's given himself the opportunity to secure his spot in Memphis with two solid closing rounds.

"Obviously you think about all of it, right, the big picture," said Vegas on advancing to the Playoffs ahead of the Wyndham Championship. "But at the end of the day you have to stay in the one week at a time." One week, one time.

Bubble watch

Frenchman Victor Perez , who entered the week at No. 70 on the FedExCup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List, carded opening rounds of 66-69 at Sedgefield to finish 5 under, safely inside the cut line. He stood T26 at the conclusion of play Saturday and was projected No. 71 on the FedExCup standings, one shot off the all-important No. 70 number.

As play was halted Saturday, the final FedExCup Playoffs spot was projected to Seamus Power . The Irishman entered the week at No. 68 on the FedExCup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List and carded rounds of 66-70 to make the cut on the number, including a crucial birdie at his final hole of the second round, the par-4 ninth. That birdie could loom large as the dust settles after the final round, whether it be Sunday evening or Monday morning.

Heartbreak warfare

Andrew Putnam, who ranked No. 72 on the FedExCup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List into the week, needed to two-putt for par on his final hole of the second round to make the cut and maintain his chances of a move inside the top 70. Putnam's 27-foot birdie try raced 7 feet past the hole, though, and he missed the comebacker en route to a bogey and a 3-under 137 total that will likely leave him one shot outside the cut line. In that case, he cannot advance to the first Playoffs event ... Kurt Kitayama, who entered the week at No. 73 on the FedExCup, chipped in for birdie at his 17th hole of the second round, the par-4 eighth, to move to 3 under and keep his Playoffs hopes alive. The UNLV alum couldn't convert a 20-foot birdie at the ninth, though, that would have moved him inside the cut line. He finished at 3-under 137 and will miss the Playoffs ... Others just outside the top-70 bubble who missed the cut include No. 74 Luke List, No. 75 Lucas Glover (defending champion at the Wyndham) and No. 76 Lee Hodges.

Peter Malnati Wins Valspar Championship And Claims First PGA Tour Title Since November 2015

Malnati bagged his first PGA Tour title in nine years after a four-under-par final round of 67 gave him a two shot victory at the Valspar Championship

Peter Malnati holds the Valspar Championship trophy

Peter Malnati fought back tears after celebrating his first win in almost a decade as he won the Valspar Championship.

Malnati's victory, after a closing 67 for a -12 total, saw the golfer wipe away tears as he recorded just his second PGA Tour win after Cameron Young bogeyed the last to finish runner-up for a seventh time.

Nine years after his first win, dad-of-two Malnati reflected: "I told myself I was going to do my best on every shot. I was so nervous coming down the stretch. You wonder if you are ever going to do it again. It has got harder with the level of talent and guys coming out aged 20 years old who are so good.

"So to have this moment it feels so amazing. It was so cool. My family believes in me. My caddie has been loyal and I am so thankful. This is my dream job and it is amazing but it is hard and this feels so good."

Malnati thrived as overnight leader Keith Mitchell collapsed badly with a 77 and Mackenzie Hughes was unable to hold on to the lead.

Hello and welcome to Golf Monthly's live final-round coverage of the Valspar Championship at the Copperhead Course, Innisbrook Resort, Florida.

Keith Mitchell starts with a two-stroke advantage over Mackenzie Hughes, Peter Malnati, and Seamus Power, with the final pairing teeing off at 1:50pm local time. Follow along for all of the key updates until a champion is crowned later this evening.

Thank you for joining us.

YOUNG OFF TO A FLIER WITH SPECTACULAR OPENING APPROACH

Cameron Young is searching for his first win on the PGA Tour and shots like this will boost his chances after hitting the flag on the first to tee up a birdie.

TERRIBLE OPENING TEE SHOT FOR LEADER KEITH MITCHELL

Mitchell looks like he might have blown the tournament wide open on the first with a poor hooked tee shot into trouble on the left. He is now sweating on a good lie because it is a par 5 and he might be able to recover. Reports his ball may have ended in a car park!

MITCHELL'S OPENING DRIVE ENDS UP IN CAR PARK

Drama here at the first where Mitchell's hooked opening tee shot has ended up in a car park and he is taking a free drop. It is a par 5 so he might be able to scramble a par or better but it is a stressful start for the overnight leader who has been forced to chip out almost sideways with his second.

Keith Mitchell takes relief from his opening drive

MITCHELL ESCAPES THE FIRST WITH A PAR

After all that drama, Mitchell has escaped at the first with a par after firing a iron from 171 yards on to the green, where he has two putted. Not quite like the famous 'Car Park Champion' Seve Ballesteros at the 1979 Open who made birdie from a car park at Lytham on the 16th en-route to victory.

UNCONVINCING MITCHELL SENDS ANOTHER WAYWARD DRIVE

Mitchell needs to get to grips with his tee shots and fast. On the second he took his three wood but still managed to pull it left into the rough. He escaped the first with a par but might not be so lucky this time as he is again forced to chip out.

ROBBY SHELTON HOLES STRONG CONTENDER FOR SHOT OF THE DAY

What a fairway wood from Robby Shelton at the 14th which he has only gone and holed from 258 yards for a two on the par 5. Incredible albatross. That gets Shelton to -4 in total and -1 for his round.

ALBATROSS FOR @ROBBY_SHELTON! Are you kidding?! 🤯 pic.twitter.com/UzNOQQHkqo March 24, 2024

NERVY MITCHELL DROPS A SHOT ON THE SECOND

Mitchell has dropped a shot and slipped back to -9. He is still infront but paid the price for missing a second successive fairway off the tee which forced him to only chip out. However the leader has finally found the fairway off the third at the 437-yard par 4.

MITCHELL FINDS FAIRWAY AT THE PAR 4 THIRD

Mitchell is looking to get back on track at the third after finding the fairway with a 225-yard tee shot before a 203-yard shot to the front of the green. It gives him an outside chance of making a birdie but he has to settle for a par after Chandler Phillips moved level with him on -9.

WHAT A ROUND CARL YUAN IS HAVING

After chipping in for eagle at the par 5 fifth, Yuan has holed out from off the green for a birdie at the par 3 eighth to get to -8.

Another one?!@CarlYuanGolf does it again! https://t.co/09mwOwk9eu pic.twitter.com/dTYVPuDb2X March 24, 2024

MITCHELL APPEARS TO BE SETTLE DOWN AFTER SUCCESSIVE PARS

Mitchell remains at -9 after pars on the third and fourth as he appears to be getting to grips with his final round following a very rocky start but he has competition from Chandler Phillips and Mackenzie Hughes who are both level with him.

XANDER SCHAUFFELE PUTTS OUT FOR FINAL ROUND 65

Xander Schauffele was blown away last Sunday by Scottie Scheffler on the PGA Tour but he has finished well this week with a closing 65 for a -6 round to get to -8 following a birdie on the last which has left him tied fourth at the moment. This is a tough course and the American must now hope his clubhouse total is enough.

MITCHELL MISSES HIS THIRD FAIRWAY LEFT IN SIX HOLES

Overnight leader Keith Mitchell definitely needs to tweak his swing here as he is consistently missing the fairway on the left side. He has done it again on the 446-yard par 4 sixth and drops another shot as he is forced to hack out en-route to a bogey.

Keith Mitchell in the rough again

SCHAUFFELE IN CLUBHOUSE AND IN WITH A CHANCE

Schauffele, who has finished with a superb final round 65 after going -6 in his last eight holes, is in the clubhouse on -8 and is definitely going to hang around in case of a play-off. He could even yet end up top on his own as Mackenzie Hughes is currently the only player ahead of him. Schauffele just told the press: "I had a nice finish. I'm staying on site so I'm going to cruise back home and hang around."

MITCHELL STILL LOOKING UNCONVINCING AS HUGHES SHINES

Keith Mitchell lost his two-shot lead early on today after some loose driving and I can't see him clawing himself back into contention on this evidence. He has just left a wedge from 92 yards 32 feet short of the pin and had to settle for a par while MacKenzie Hughes has poured in a 36-feet birdie putt at the eighth to get to -10.

YUAN KEEPS UP PRESSURE AT TOP WITH THIRD CHIP IN OF HIS ROUND

Chinese pro Carl Yuan is at -9 and having an incredible round to remember after chipping in for a third time. Astonishing.

Three hole-outs!!!@CarlYuanGolf can't miss 🔥 https://t.co/Auw1lyGy3w pic.twitter.com/QXoLsN2EpV March 24, 2024

HUGHES GETS PLUGGED LIE IN SAND OFF TEE AT NINTH

Hughes has looked composed and a good bet as the frontman on -10 but he got a plugged lie off the tee on the ninth and hasn't even managed to advance his ball back on to the fairway with his second at the par 4. He wedges up close but misses his par putt and drops back to -9.

MITCHELL NOW +4 FOR HIS FINAL ROUND AFTER LATEST BOGEY

Keith Mitchell teed off with a two-shot lead but has reached the turn +4 over today after dropping back to -6 following a string of poor drives and unconvincing shots. Can't see him winning unless he gets a spark asap.

FINE BOUNCE BACK BIRDIE FROM HUGHES ON 10

After dropping a shot on the ninth when he drove into the sand, Hughes has responded with a fine birdie on the par 4 10th with a big 45-foot putt.

CAMERON YOUNG WILL HAVE A SHORT BIRDIE PUTT TO GO JOINT TOP

Impressive play from Young on the 12th who has put a wedge to six feet on the par four 12th. He is -9 and has a chance to join Mackenzie Hughes and Peter Malnati at the top of the leaderboard. Young is yet to win on the PGA Tour but he should have another chance today after making birdie to go to -10.

Looking for his first TOUR win 👀Cameron Young gets a share of the lead @ValsparChamp. pic.twitter.com/T8WlWM7L8P March 24, 2024

HUGHES HAS ANOTHER TOUGH BUNKER SHOT ON THE 12TH

After dropping a shot earlier following a plugged bunker lie, Hughes has another tough shot from a downhill lie in the sand ahead at the back of the 12th after his approach from 182 yards. It left him little chance to keep the ball on the green and he has dropped a shot.

WE HAVE OUR LATEST NEW LEADER PETER MALNATI

The lead continues to ebb and flow at the Valspar Championship at Innisbrook Resort in Florida where Peter Malnati is now -11 on his own after his third successive birdie at the 12th despite not liking his approach or putt.

Hated it, should have loved it 😅 pic.twitter.com/gPFiYyFgpt March 24, 2024

CAMERON YOUNG IS DESPERATE FOR HIS MAIDEN PGA TOUR WIN AND THIS IS A GREAT CHANCE

Young, has had six runner-up finishes in his career on the PGA Tour so far, including the 2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play and the 2022 Open Championship, but he could finally be about to land his first title. He has just moved level with Malnati after a birdie on the par five 14th and then hit the par 3 15th with a fine shot of 179 yards before tapping in for par to stay -4 today and -11 in total with three holes left going into the Snake Pit.

Cameron Young chases down his maiden win at the Valspar Championship

FINAL PAIRING WELL OUT OF IT

Today's final round is coming to a thrilling climax but I imagine the last pair of Seamus Power and Keith Mitchell will just want to get off the course by now. They teed off with dreams of victory but Power is +5 for today and overnight leader Mitchell is +8.

YOUNG ENTERS THE INFAMOUS 'SNAKE PIT'

Young is looking composed and has a great chance here. He is level with Malnati but can put a lot of pressure on his rival as he is in the group ahead. Young has teed off on the 16th and cut a drive which just ended in the rough. He has about 156 yards to go and is able to gouge an impressive shot to the green en-route to a par while Malnati in the group behind hit the par 3 15th and made his par too.

YOUNG FIRES IN A BRILLIANT TEE SHOT TO 17TH

Young has hit a superb tee shot into the par 3 17th from 204 yards to 17 feet. He has a chance to put a lot of pressure on Malnati in the group behind who has put his second through the 16th green into the thick fringe where he has been fortunate to get a free drop as Young makes par and so does Malnati.

YOUNG IN TROUBLE OFF THE 18TH TEE AS MALNATI HITS 17TH GREEN

Young has been hitting it so well today to get to -4  and -11 in total but his last drive on the 18th is a shocker after he pulled it left into the rough. So it is advantage Malnati who has put his tee shot on the 17th from 199 yards to six foot.

YOUNG FINDS 18TH GREEN AS MALNATI GRABS LEAD

Young has found the 18th green from the rough and may need to hole out from 51-feet after Malnati birdied the 17th to get to -12. Young's effort comes up short and he three-putts the last leaving Malnati with a two shot lead coming up the last.

Tree trouble finds co-leader Cameron Young. He drops a shot after an errant tee shot on the 72nd hole @ValsparChamp. pic.twitter.com/Bfh26cMPkq March 24, 2024

MALNATI POISED FOR VICTORY AS YOUNG SETTLES FOR SECOND AGAIN

Malnati is walking up the last with a two-shot lead after hitting the 18th green in regulation. He drove into the sand but played up on to the green after Young bogeyed the last to walk off facing his seventh runner-up finish.

MOLNATI PARS THE LAST TO SEAL VICTORY

Peter Molnati has tapped in for a closing 67 and a -12 total as the golfer wiped away tears for just his second PGA Tour win.

Golf roundup: Aaron Rai wins PGA Tour’s regular-season finale

August 11, 2024 at 9:00 p.m.

by The Associated Press

AP photo by Chuck Burton / Aaron Rai watches his tee shot on the second hole at Sedgefield Country Club during the final round of the PGA Tour's Wyndham Championship on Sunday in Greensboro, N.C.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Aaron Rai took advantage of Max Greyserman's late meltdown to win the Wyndham Championship by two strokes on Sunday, making the PGA Tour's regular-season finale his first career win on the circuit.

Rai closed with a 6-under-par 64, with the 29-year-old Englishman making a 6 1/2-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th at Sedgefield Country Club to finish the 72-hole tournament at 18-under 262.

"It truly is a dream come true," said Rai, who has two career wins on the Europe-based DP World Tour. "So many people have played a huge role in me being at this point."

Greyserman, a 29-year-old former Duke player seeking his first PGA Tour win, closed with a 69 to finish alone in second on a day when everyone played 36 holes and some a few more after inclement weather washed out play on Thursday and delayed its start on both Friday and Saturday.

Rai was four strokes back after Greyserman holed out from 91 yards for an eagle on the par-4 13th, then had an unexpected share of the lead a hole later when Greyserman drove out of bounds and made a quadruple-bogey 8 on 14.

"If that does not hit the cart path, we're probably in a different situation," Greyserman said. "That doesn't mean that that one bounce is the reason that I didn't win."

Greyserman, who shot a 60 in the second round, birdied the par-5 15th in the final round to pull a shot ahead, then four-putted the par-3 16th for a double bogey and made pars on the last two holes.

"Played good enough to kind of run away with it." Greyserman said. "Obviously, stuff happens in golf that sometimes it's not meant to be."

Rai didn't know where he stood on the leaderboard during the round.

"I didn't really look and didn't ask to know that information," Rai said. "I think that was probably a good thing that helped me just to focus on the golf. I was playing well, and I knew that if I finished off well, then you never know what can happen."

J.J. Spaun (64) and Japan's Ryo Hisatsune (67) tied for third at 15 under.

Amateur player Luke Clanton bogeyed the final two holes for a 69 to tie for fifth with Austin Eckroat (67) at 14 under.

"It's exhausting. I'm exhausted," said Clanton, who was set to begin play Monday in the U.S. Amateur Championship tournament in Minnesota. "Thirty-nine holes of golf is no joke."

Chattanooga native Keith Mitchell, one of four Baylor School graduates on the PGA Tour but the only one to make the cut at the Wyndham Championship, closed with rounds of 67-68 to tie for 12th at 11 under.

Second-round leader Matt Kuchar was tied for 12th at 11 under when he elected to stop play on the 18th because of darkness. He will return Monday morning to finish, the only player in the field who did not do so.

Kuchar needed a victory to extend his streak of appearances in the FedEx Cup playoffs. He was the only player to reach every previous postseason in the PGA Tour's format that dates to 2007.

The top 70 on the FedEx Cup points list will qualify for the playoff opener, the FedEx St. Jude Championship, which starts Thursday at TPC Southwind in Memphis.

Ames adds more "icing" to senior career

SNOQUALMIE, Wash. — Stephen Ames repeated as the winner of the PGA Tour Champions' Boeing Classic, making a birdie on the par-5 18th to close with a 5-under 67, finish the 54-hole tournament at 11-under 205 and post a one-stroke victory over New Zealand's Steven Alker (66), South Africa's Ernie Els (68) and Sweden's Robert Karlsson (75) at the Club at Snoqualmie Ridge.

The 60-year-old Ames, a naturalized Canadian citizen from Trinidad and Tobago, won on the 50-and-older tour for the third time this season and the ninth time overall. He won four times on the PGA Tour.

"This stage right now, this is all icing on my cake, so I'm just enjoying this and I'm going to take it as long as it goes," Ames said of his success on the senior circuit.

"I'm enjoying the winning, let's put it that way. It is fun, no doubt about that. This year I've been very consistent, more than I was last year, which was actually one of my goals."

Karlsson had a two-shot lead after 36 holes but struggled early Sunday, making five bogeys in a six-hole stretch on the front nine. He had one more bogey on the back nine but also three birdies, including back-to-back strokes gained on the final two holes.

U.S. player Kirk Triplett (71) and South Korea's Charlie Wi (75) tied for fifth at 8 under.

Familiar finish for Malixi and Talley

TULSA, Okla. — Rianne Malixi beat Asterisk Talley 3 and 2 to win the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at Southern Hills Country Club, three weeks after routing Talley in the U.S. Girls' Junior final.

Last month in the U.S. Girls' Junior, the 17-year-old Malixi, who is from the Philippines, beat Talley 8 and 7 at El Caballero Country club in Tarzana, California, the largest championship-match blowout in that United States Golf Association tournament's history.

Malixi is the second player to win both events in the same year, joining South Korea's Eun Jeong Seong, who pulled off the feat in 2016. Malixi has committed to Duke, with plans to begin college play in 2025.

The 15-year-old Talley, from Chowchilla, California, led 1 up Saturday after the first 18 holes of the 36-hole championship match were moved up a day because of expected rain Sunday.

Malixi was 3 up after 26 holes, and Talley took the next three holes to tie it up. They halved the 30th with pars, but Malixi won the next three with birdies and closed it out with a par halve on the par-5 34th.

Talley teamed with Sarah Lim to win the U.S. Women's Amateur Four-Ball in May in San Antonio.

keith mitchell pga tour wins

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Playoff fever, can you feel it?

The final of 35 regular-season events on the PGA Tour will be a twin bill of sorts as the second round will resume at 6:45 a.m. ET, followed by plans to play 36 holes to complete the 72-hole tournament and determine the top-70 finishers in the season-long points race who will advance to the first playoff event in Memphis next week.

As a result of an hour delay Saturday morning due to overnight storms, there were 20 players still needing to complete their second round on Sunday morning before a 36-hole cut can be made. The third round (in threesomes off two tees) is set to begin mid-morning and the final round mid-afternoon.  At this pace, we could be headed for the dreaded Monday finish.

Matt Kuchar grabbed a one-stroke lead over three players at 12-under 128. He posted a 6-under 64 — preferred lies were in effect again in round 2 — at Sedgefield Country Club on Saturday.

“Halfway mark’s a long way to go still,” Kuchar said. “I kind of keep my head down, keep plugging away and hopefully more good golf to come for whatever we’ve got for tomorrow or Monday, I’m not sure what the next few days is going to hold.”

Here are five things to know about the 2024 Wyndham Championship heading into Sunday.

Kuchar sets the pace

Needing a win to get into the FedEx Cup Playoffs, Matt Kuchar is trying to follow in the footsteps of Lucas Glover last year and win to get in. Kuchar is the only player to make the playoffs in every season since the FedEx Cup began in 2007.

“Certainly been a frustrating year, but I feel like the bar’s been set high,” Kuchar said. “I feel like I played a lot of good golf, consistent golf for a long time. Makes the poor golf that much more frustrating. I think the expectations are high. So I continue every week to expect to play good golf and it’s not always gone that way, but nice to see things kind of rounding into form. Hope it’s not too late, hope I still got a chance to continue going.”

Through two rounds, Kuchar is the only player who is projected to move inside the top 70. He finished T-3 at the 3M Open and picked up where he left off with a pair of 64s to take the 36-hole lead. How does he feel about Sunday’s marathon finish?

“I’ve got some built-in confidence knowing that a month or two ago when I was down at the U.S. Open qualifying, did 36 holes at the Bear’s Club, was medalist down there. Able to walk 36 in the heat and humidity without too much problem,” he said. “Glad I grew up in central Florida and know this stuff pretty well.”

Greyserman's putting prowess

10th birdie of the day for Max Greyserman! @WyndhamChamp pic.twitter.com/Ts6lbaZeeN — Golf on CBS ⛳ (@GolfonCBS) August 10, 2024

About the only putt Max Greyserman failed to make during his second round on Saturday was a 49-foot birdie putt at 18 for 59.

Inexplicably, he left it short.

But he made more than 188 feet of putts for the round, including a 75-footer for birdie.

“Looked pretty good the whole way,” he said. “It was kind of a tricky putt up and over a knob, but didn’t have too much break. I was so far away, I couldn’t even tell, but it looked pretty good.”

When told about the long-range bomb, Denny McCarthy, one of the Tour’s best with the short stick, said that’s more feet than all of the putts he’d made in his first two rounds. His caddie chimed in, “He’s not lying.” (Well, truth be told, McCarthy made 99 feet, nine inches, but point made.)

When Greyserman sank a 24-foot birdie at 17, he reached 10 under for the round and knew the course was a par 70 and that a birdie would break 60.

“The last four holes it was in my mind for sure,” he said.

After just two birdies in his opening round, Greyserman shot the second 60 of the tournament and leaped into a tie for second at 11-under 129 with Chad Ramey and Cameron Young.

Keith Mitchell summed up what it feels like to be on the outside looking in on the playoff picture this week at the Wyndham Championship.

“It’s all or nothing really,” said Mitchell, who entered the week at No. 78 and is seeking to extend a six-year FedExCup playoffs streak. “I’m kind of playing from behind and it’s no fun to do that, you’ve just got to kind of dig deep and do the best you can.”

He did just that on Saturday, shooting 64 to improve to 6 under (T-19) and keep his hopes alive. He needs a two-way tie for seventh at minimum. When asked if he feels a bit like a football team down four with two minutes to go in the game, he said, “We might be down nine, I might need to throw — go for two and kick a field goal, you never know.”

Davis Riley, who is projected at No. 72, shot a solid 66 to take care of the first part of the puzzle and make the cut.

“For sure, it’s a big round,” he said. “It’s very hot out here and it was honestly one of the toughest rounds of golf I’ve played. I’ve been a little bit under the weather the last couple days and I was grinding out there. Yeah, so I’m exhausted. To play the weekend and hopefully put together a playoff berth would be big time.”

Another player who came up clutch was Seamus Power. He stuck his second shot at his last hole to 3 feet and made birdie to make the weekend on the number and head into the final two rounds as the Bubble Boy.

Victor Perez (T26/-5) is the only player projected to fall out of the top 70 (70 to 71). Among those assured of missing the cut are Nos. 72-77 entering the week, who are all finished with the second round at 3-under or worse: Andrew Putnam; Kurt Kitayama; Luke List; defending champion Lucas Glover; Lee Hodges; and Adam Schenk).

There were not one but two aces on Saturday. Both were made at the 189-yard, par-3 12th hole.

First, Lucas Glover made his sixth career hole-in-one on Tour (tied for ninth-most since the Tour began tracking hole-by-hole data in 1983).

That was followed by Joe Highsmith, who became the first player to make three holes-in-one in a single season since the Tour began tracking hole-by-hole data in 1983; other holes-in-one this season: The American Express (R2/No. 13), Rocket Mortgage Classic (R2/No. 5).

“Yeah, it was super cool. I hit 6-iron and it was kind of a perfect number and I knew if I pulled it long right that I had a little backstop over there. It worked out perfect,” said Highsmith, who said he has 18 career aces.

He also had a premonition he would make one. “I just kind of had like some weird feeling,” he said. “Sometimes some crazy stuff like that happens in golf.”

His first hole-in-one this season, which also was with a 6-iron, has a cool backstory. “My grandpa couldn’t walk the course that day so he was staying on the green on that hole, so that was going to be the only shot that he saw all day,” Highsmith recalled. “It went in, so that was probably the most special.”
