The Journey franchise began with Journey to the Centre of the Earth , and continued with its sequel Journey 2: The Mysterious Island . Both films were hugely successful, and with the introduction of Dwayne Johnson in the second film, they fast became box office successes, picked up legions of fans, and looked on track to follow the classic film franchise formula for continued success.

Shortly after the success of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , a following sequel was announced which promised to be even bigger and better: Journey 3: From the Earth to the Moon . Unfortunately, this project was paused shortly after, and then the announcement came that the film was no more . Here’s everything we know about the sequel and why it didn't happen.

Script Difficulties and Actor Commitment Issues

One of the first problems that was encountered by the Journey franchise was the curse of a lack of script for developing the project further. Johnson revealed in 2018 that the lack of a solid script was a large reason for his not being involved in the project. There was initial speculation that writers Chad and Carey W. Hayes would be tied to the film. This could have been exciting, given their previous work in films such as The Conjuring and House of Wax , representing the possibility for the script to change to be more mature or have horror themes which were not fully explored before. This creative direction was eventually scrapped for reasons unclear. Naturally, difficulties such as these meant that actors were hesitant to be tied to the project since it didn’t seem to be fully coming into fruition. It would have been interesting, however, to see what direction the Hayes Brothers could have taken the film in.

Dwayne Johnson’s Popularity Surged

Dwayne Johnson first gained huge popularity under his stage name The Rock. He initially appeared as a wrestler for WWE, where he wrestled for eight years and became one of the most famous wrestlers to ever be on the show, developing a huge following and growing in popularity year after year. This led to a continued career in film, beginning in 2002 when he starred in The Scorpion King , which then led to further success, allowing him to leave WWE altogether and act in Hollywood full time.

When Johnson joined the franchise in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , his career was only just beginning to gain the momentum that it has today. The years following Journey 2 saw Johnson take on several huge projects, like Fast & Furious 6 , Hercules , San Andreas , and Moana , to name a few. It’s clear that his schedule was becoming more and more packed, and without a script for Journey 3 , the possibility of a sequel was put to the back of his to-do list. Despite director Peyton frequently stating in interviews that he did not have any plans for the franchise to end, the lack of Johnson’s presence would have likely thrown a wrench in the plans. Johnson eventually confirmed on Twitter that he would not be returning, which present the ultimate challenge for the film since he was an integral part to its success and general appeal. While responding to his fans, the actor stated that the reason behind the cancelation was the script and his busy work schedule.

There’s an Online Petition for the Project to be Resurrected

Understandably, fans were not happy with the decision for the film to be shelved, and Johnson’s announcement that he would not be returning in 2018 caused even further disappointment. The original director for the film was supposed to be Brad Peyton, and after having huge successes like San Andreas and Rampage , we can understand why fans were sad about missing out on this opportunity. In today’s world, fans have access to the internet and can be very vocal about their upset for these kinds of things. This has resulted in the setting up of a petition, which call for Dwayne Johnson and Brad Peyton to be attached to the film again, which you can find here .

Why The Rock's Giving Up On Making Journey 3

The Rock Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

Between his turns in franchises like G.I. Joe and Fast and Furious (just to name a couple), Dwayne Johnson has earned his Franchise Viagra nickname. That said, not all of his potential projects will ever see the light of day, including a sequel to Journey 2: The Mysterious Island . Some fans have wondered why we haven't seen the third installment in the franchise yet, and Johnson has officially taken to social media to explain that he gave up on it because he couldn't creatively make it work. In response to the question of Journey 3 's status, The Rock posted:

So it seems that there was a plan to make a third Journey at one point in time. The Rock wanted to dive further into Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon to push the franchise into trilogy territory. However, as is often the case with franchises such as this, the project ran into creative issues and ended up getting abandoned somewhere in development hell. Now, Dwayne Johnson has moved on to other projects, including his upcoming Luke Hobbs/Deckard Shaw Fast and Furious spinoff , with no intention of journeying back to Journey .

Of course, if you're a fan who wants to see The Rock adventure through a jungle on a blockbuster adventure, then you can always head to your local theater to check out Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle . The revival of the board game (now video game) adventure series has made a ton of money and has earned a welcoming response from critics . It's not a Journey movie, but based on his post , it seems that it will have to do for the foreseeable future.

The Rock Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle Karen Gillan Jack Black

That's not to say that the Journey franchise couldn't conceivably continue without The Rock involved in some capacity. After all, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , despite its status as a sequel, was Dwayne Johnson first installment in the franchise -- which saw him take the reins from Brendan Fraser after 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth . Dropping a box office draw as powerful of The Rock doesn't necessarily seem like the smartest business decision, but if he's not coming back, that could be the only way to get another Journey movie made.

Though it might feel somewhat disheartening for fans to learn that a sequel to Journey 2: The Mysterious Island isn't in the cards at this point, we will bring you more information related to all of Dwayne Johnson's upcoming projects as new details are made available to us. If you want release dates for his 2018 films like Rampage and Skyscraper , then make sure to hop over to our 2018 movie premiere guide or check out our full guide to what the wildly successful actor has coming up.

Is this the biggest Covid summer wave ever?

The U.S. is in what may end up being its biggest summer wave of Covid, with no end yet in sight.

“If you just talk about infections, this is probably going to end up becoming the largest summer wave we’ve had,” said Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of the Brown University School of Public Health and former White House Covid-19 response coordinator. “It’s still not as big as the winter waves, but it is starting to get close.”

It's not only in the U.S. There's been a worldwide surge in infections in recent weeks, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, technical lead for Covid at the World Health Organization, said in a briefing this week . The proportion of tests coming back positive for Covid in Europe is above 20%, with wastewater data suggesting case numbers may be two to 20 times higher than what's being reported, Van Kerkhove said.

The best way to estimate how much virus the U.S. is coping with is wastewater data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , because many people just test at home when they get sick, if they test at all.

A masked commuter on the metro in Washington

Nationally, the CDC tracker lists levels of Covid as "high," with the Western U.S., including Texas and California, showing some of the highest levels of virus. Eastern states, such Florida and North Carolina, are also reporting very high levels of virus in the community.

Wastewater can't identify how many cases a day there are; coronavirus levels are much higher nationwide than they were this time last year.

This year’s summer wave also began earlier than last year’s, Jha said. Case numbers started rising in early June, compared with July and August 2023.

Jha expects this wave to peak in the next few weeks, with case numbers becoming much lower around September — about the time the updated Covid vaccines targeting the KP.2 strain , a descendant of the JN.1 variant, should be available.

The new vaccines should get final approval from the Food and Drug Administration in the coming weeks. At that point, the CDC will recommend who should be first in line for the shots.

Jha said that to protect against a winter surge, you should aim to get vaccinated in October at the earliest, although any time before Thanksgiving should be fine.

Andrew Pekosz, a virologist at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, didn't expect the summer waves to be so pronounced four years into Covid.

“I, and many other virologists, thought that we probably would see summer waves for maybe another one or two years, but we didn’t expect them to increase significantly,” he said. “We thought they would continue to just sort of be smaller and smaller as time went on, as we transition to what we hope is going to be just one winter surge of Covid cases per year.”

Latest Covid news

  • CDC: Covid fell to the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., down from 4th.
  • Covid variants are spreading fast: When to rest, when to isolate and when to test.
  • A new version of the Covid vaccine is targeted to the highly contagious KP.2 version of the virus.

The latest CDC f orecast has a mixture of variants currently in circulation including, KP.3, KP.3.1.1 and KP.2.3, descendants of the JN.1 version of the virus that was circulating earlier this year. Some scientists collectively refer to the variants as “FLiRT” — a reference to their genetic changes — and they are believed to be some of the most contagious yet.

The factors behind the current spread are most likely the more transmissible variants, combined with people’s spending more time indoors because of hot weather, he said.

“Besides that, there’s not much that we can sort of put our finger on to say this is what’s driving this summer surge," Pekosz said.

For the most part, hospitalizations for Covid this year have remained lower than last year. In recent summer months , there has been a slight uptick , with levels higher than they were this time last year. Fortunately, deaths due to Covid remain the fewest they have ever been.

“We’re seeing people that are getting admitted and test positive for Covid, but the severe pulmonary complications of Covid-19 are extremely rare,” said Dr. Michael Phillips, chief hospital epidemiologist for NYU Langone Health in New York City. “Where we see the dramatic increase in numbers is people that are coming into our [emergency department] or people coming into our ambulatory sites who test positive and go home.”

The test positivity rate at NYU Langone Health, or the proportion of patients with symptoms who test positive for Covid, is 12%, a sixfold increase in just the last couple of months.

Last month it had 1,357 positive tests, over twice as many as in July 2023, when it had 562 positive tests. Just 12 of the Covid patients last month were admitted to the hospital for Covid-related illnesses.

“Our hospitalization rates are down, so even if we are testing and seeing more [Covid], it seems to be having less of an impact on our susceptible populations,” Phillips said.

Jha said that what happens this winter is impossible to predict but that there could be a silver lining to a large summer wave.

“A big summer wave tends to lead to a little bit of a smaller winter wave and vice versa, just because there’s a little bit more immunity in the population,” he said.

'House of the Dragon' Season 3 is coming: What we know so far

There is more to see from Team Black and Team Green.

The "Game of Thrones" prequel series " House of the Dragon " will return for a third season, despite what USA TODAY TV critic Kelly Lawler called an anti-climactic finale .

The HBO series, now streaming on Max and based on George R.R. Martin 's "Fire & Blood" book, ended its second season on Sunday. The latest season, which premiered June 16, followed the ongoing fight for the Iron Throne of Westeros and was "uneven but often rousing."

Some fans were disappointed after what was seen as an abrupt and uneventful conclusion to the second season. But viewers should expect an action-packed third season, which is likely to kick off with a bang when it finally premieres.

What will the plot of 'House of the Dragon' Season 3 be?

Fans anxious to see what happens next in "House of the Dragon" can read Martin's "Fire & Blood," which includes the entire storyline of the series.

But those let down by the lack of major battles in the Season 2 finale can take comfort in the fact that based on the book, a highly anticipated one should come early in Season 3, perhaps as soon as the first or second episode. Part of the reason some fans were disappointed by the finale is many expected this battle, plus one other major event from the book that's coming up soon, to occur in Season 2.

During a featurette that aired after Sunday's finale, showrunner Ryan Condal teased that while Season 2 was about the "fits and starts" of war, Season 3 will be "about total war."

'Could've been an email': House of the Dragon finale leaves fans wanting more

'House of the Dragon' renewed for Season 3

Despite fan disappointment with the Season 2 finale, the series isn't going anywhere, as "House of the Dragon" was renewed for Season 3 ahead of the Season 2 premiere.

"George, Ryan, and the rest of our incredible executive producers, cast, and crew, have reached new heights with the phenomenal second season of 'House of the Dragon,'" said HBO programming Executive Vice President Francesca Orsi in a statement. "We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into the creation of a spectacular season two, with a scope and scale that is only rivaled by its heart. We could not be more thrilled to continue the story of House Targaryen and watch this team burn bright again for season three."

The series is led by Martin as co-creator and executive producer with co-creator, showrunner and executive producer Ryan Condal .

When does 'House of the Dragon' Season 3 premiere on HBO?

"House of the Dragon" Season 3 has not yet received a premiere date on HBO.

But on Monday, according to Variety , Condal confirmed that the season will go into production in early 2025. After the long wait between Season 1 and Season 2, fans shouldn't expect to see Season 3 before 2026. Season 2 began production in April 2023 and premiered in June 2024, so based on that timeline, Season 3 could be eying a return around summer 2026.

In the meantime, another "Game of Thrones" prequel series, "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms," will air on HBO in 2025. Based on Martin's "Tales of Dunk and Egg," it follows the adventures of a knight named Ser Duncan the Tall and Prince Aegon Targaryen. A brief teaser for the show was released on Sunday .

How many seasons will 'House of the Dragon' last?

In a press conference on Monday, Condal addressed how many seasons "House of the Dragon" will last. "I think it's four," he said, according to Entertainment Weekly .

Martin previously said he expects "House of the Dragon" to last at least four seasons.

"It is going to take four full seasons of 10 episodes each to do justice to the Dance of the Dragons, from start to finish," the author wrote on his blog in 2022. In January, Martin also said he had been discussing the "third and fourth seasons" with Condal and the show's writers.

In a 2023 interview with Deadline , Orsi said the series will likely not have "any less than four" seasons and teased that there "could be more."

'Game of Thrones' star Kit Harington says Jon Snow spinoff is no longer in the works

Will there be any new characters in 'House of the Dragon' Season 3?

For book readers, one of the biggest questions throughout Season 2 was when, or if, the show would introduce Nettles.

In "Fire & Blood," Nettles is a major fan-favorite character who comes into play during the "dragonseed" storyline, in which numerous new dragonriders come forward. Described in the book as a "small brown girl" who grew up homeless, she was nowhere to be found in Season 2. The events of Sunday's finale strongly suggested that Nettles has been cut from the show, with aspects of her storyline given to Daemon's daughter Rhaena instead.

One character expected to be introduced in Season 3, though, is Alicent's other son Daeron. He has remained off screen for the entire series but was mentioned in Season 2, and his dragon Tessarion could be seen at the end of the finale, suggesting his proper introduction is imminent. No casting for Daeron has been announced.

How to watch 'House of the Dragon' Season 2 on HBO, Max

The Emmy-winning series airs on  HBO . The show's first two seasons are also available to stream on Max , HBO's streaming platform, in full.

How did Raygun qualify for the Olympics? Is she really the best Australia has to offer?

Raygun performs at the Paris Olympics

Since Australian breaker Rachael "Raygun" Gunn failed to score a single point in any of her Olympic bouts, many have asked how she qualified for the Games.

Fellow breaker and anthropologist Lucas Marie says she won her qualification "fair and square" last year, but African American man Malik Dixon has criticised the Olympic body for letting her in.

What's next?

Breaking will not be an event at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games — a decision made before Raygun's performance.

The 2024 Paris Olympics marked breaking's debut as a sport at the global event, with 36-year-old lecturer and breaker Rachael "Raygun" Gunn representing Australia for the first time.

Having failed to win a single point in any of her Olympic bouts, Raygun quickly became a viral sensation.

The question on many people's minds now is: How did she even qualify?

Lucas Marie is a breaker who has competed, performed, taught and judged breaking competitions over the past 25 years. He's also an anthropologist who recently co-authored an article with Gunn.

He says the answer to that question is simple.

A black and white close-up image of Lucas Marie smiling.

"There was an Oceania qualifier in which any B-boy or B-girl from Australia [or] New Zealand could enter, and that was in Sydney in October 2023," he told ABC News.

"And leading up to that, there were a lot of other events in which breakers were competing.

"She won those battles fair and square and won the qualification in Sydney.

"And it wasn't really a surprise to anyone.

"She's been fairly consistent, winning or coming second or third at a lot of breaking events in Australia for the last five to 10 years."

Marie said there was nothing out of the ordinary about Raygun's performance.

"It's not like gymnastics where there's this kind of agreed-upon standard," he said.

"It's always had a rawness to it. It's always had an improvisational kind of quality. And I think looking different and trying different stuff has always been celebrated.

"And I think Raygun, in a way, was just expressing a core kind of hip hop trait in a way a lot of breakers do."

He described her efforts as bold.

"I thought — and this is how I judge a lot of breaking events — I thought, 'Oh, she's making some really interesting choices to mimic Australian animals.' And you can kind of see the choices that she's making in the moment."

Is she the best Australia has to offer?

Team Australia chef de mission Anna Meares insisted after Raygun's performance that she was the best breaker the country had to offer. But is this true?

A man in purple pants doing a handstand.

"It's sometimes just who's performing better on the day," Marie said.

"And at the qualification event in which she won, and other events in which she's won, she performed better on that day and won the ticket.

"That doesn't mean she's the best. It doesn't really work like that.

"I think she's a great breaker. She won the qualification. She's won other events in the past, and she was a good representative for Australia at that competition."

Asked whether there were B-girls in Perth, regional Victoria or rural Brisbane who might have qualified but could not afford to travel to Sydney for the tryouts, Marie agreed this was possible.

"Of course, there's breakers all over the country that maybe should have been in that event, but they weren't."

Breaking will not carry over to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, a decision made before Raygun's battle.

Marie described this as sad.

"Maybe, based on the ratings, they'll reassess that and maybe allocate some medals to breaking," he said.

"I really hope that's the case, and I hope that for other breakers who want to compete in it as a dance sport."

Marie said that at the end of the day people should remember they were dealing with a human.

"As a friend of Rachael's, there's a human being who's getting a lot of negative attention," he said.

"I think people kind of miss that sometimes and forget the human aspect of all this."

'Toying with the culture'

Malik Dixon is an African American who has been living in Australia for more than a decade and is a Sydney University graduate.

He said Raygun made a total "mockery" out of breaking at the Olympics.

A blurry image of Malik Dixon wearing a blue shirt reading "CHAPEL HILL".

"She was dressed like a member of the cricket team or an Australian PE teacher, and from that point it just seemed like satire," Mr Dixon told ABC News.

"It just looked like somebody who was toying with the culture and didn't know how culturally significant it was being the first time in the Olympics and just how important it was to people who really cherish hip hop and one of the elements of hip hop, which is breakdancing.

"It made me think, was Borat her breakdancing coach?"

Mr Dixon said too many people felt entitled to African American culture.

"The African American space has been one where we've shared our community so much and without any restraints, any barriers, roadblocks, obstacles, any gatekeepers, that essentially what should have been African American cultural capital is just shared, which is cool," he said.

"We like to share, right?

"We shared 400 years of free labour.

"To see Rachael in her attempt to be a part of the culture just be grossly underwhelming made it seem like she didn't take it seriously."

Olympics body criticised for Raygun qualification

Mr Dixon criticised the body that qualified Raygun, saying she devalued breaking with her performance.

"Whatever governing body nominated her as Australia's entrant into the Olympics either did not understand the assignment or didn't really believe in the integrity or significance of breakdancing, because if they did they would just say, rather than disrespect the culture, we're just not ready to send an applicant this year."

He said Raygun was extremely audacious and not self-aware.

"You've got to know your role, know your position, know your limitation," he said.

"And I think that part of privilege is saying that there are no limits to what I can do.

"Part of privilege is having the authority to say that there are no limits and there are no requirements, there are no prerequisites to what I can do."

Raygun's degrees do not hold much water with Mr Dixon.

"Due to consumerism, this Foundational Black American product, which is hip hop, is global," he said.

"And even people who have no connection to any African Americans or any local or regional things that come out in these songs, they have become a part of the whole experience now.

"If I came in and said that I was an authority on Greek music and I was going against the grain of what the mainstream Greek musicians thought, or the school of thought, and I've said that I was the authority, people would check me on that.

"If I had a PhD in sprinting, does that qualify me to go against Noah Lyles? No, it doesn't."

He also doubts Raygun was the best breaker Australia had to offer.

"[There's] got to be somebody out here that's better than that! The kangaroo! The sprinkler! She did the sprinkler out there, man!" he said.

Should everybody just lighten up?

Should we lighten up? Mr Dixon does not believe so.

"Larrikinism is used as a get-out-of-jail-free card and to escape responsibility of how words or actions impact a hurt person," he said.

"But when the majority culture is offended, there's no playing around.

"This is a part of my culture, and I don't think Australians are in a place to tell me how I should feel about breakdancing being mocked on an international stage.

"People who don't have any or limited access to black people or hip hop culture now may see Rachael and her buffoonery as a representation of hip hop and black culture.

"People who were already side-eyeing breakdancing as an Olympic sport, Rachael Gunn has put the nail in that coffin.

"This might be the most viral clip of the whole Olympics. From a comedy standpoint, she's got it, but from an Olympics perspective, its regressive."

Beyond the Spider-Verse: Release Date, Cast, and Everything We Know

Spider-Man Beyond the Spider-Verse, Miles Morales, The Spot

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is on the way, but it could be quite some time before the movie ever releases.

Coming off the uber-successful Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse , Beyond is set to close out the Sony Pictures' animated Spider-Verse trilogy.

Originally titled Across the Spider-Verse Part 2 , the upcoming third film has been described as the Avengers: Endgame of this animated world , following up directly from Across the Spider-Verse 's shocking cliffhanger ending.

Spider-Man Beyond the Spider-Verse Release Date: When Will It Come Out

Spider-Verse 3 Release

While originally slated to come to theaters on March 29, 2024, Beyond the Spider-Verse has since been delayed indefinitely.

The film remains off the Sony Pictures slate for 2024, with no indication of when it will come to theaters.

According to the Spider-Verse creative team, the movie's delay had to do with job action in Hollywood with the writers' strike having now come to a close and the actors still on the picket lines.

Spider-Verse 3 writers/producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller told Digital Spy in August 2023 that the upcoming animated epic will be released "when it is ready:"

"[It will come] when it's ready. Those conversations are thankfully above our paygrade, but I can tell you we're already hard at work on it, and we'll take the time it takes to make it great."

They added the team is trying to craft the most "satisfying conclusion to the story than it can be," so if it takes time, then it takes time:

"What we're trying to accomplish with the film is have it be the most satisfying conclusion to the story than it can be, and take it to places that you haven’t been before. And make you laugh and cry, and cheer and think."

Last fans heard - following the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, producer Miller told press he was "knee-deep" in production on the threequel, being the first hints at where the movie stood following the 2023 Hollywood strikes:

"We’re in production…we’re really excited about where the story is going, I think it’s a very satisfying conclusion to the trilogy and it’s as emotional as the other ones…we’re knee-deep in it."

There is no telling yet when the movie will eventually be released, but it is good to know progress is actively being made on the title.

If work can continue unimpeded throughout 2024, there is a chance the movie will be ready sometime in 2025.

Spider-Man Beyond the Spider-Verse Cast: Who Will Return?

Spider-Verse Spider-People

Seeing as Beyond the Spider-Verse is expected to serve as a second part of the Across the Spider-Verse story, fans can expect much of that prior film's cast to return for the trilogy-closer.

Of course, headlining the film will be the stars of the first two movies Shamiek Moore as Miles Morales , Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker, and Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy .

Joining them will likely be other Spider-Heroes from across the web-slinging multiverse, including Oscar Isaac's Miguel O'Hara, Daniel Kaluuya's Spider-Punk, John Mulaney's Spider-Ham, and Karan Soni's Spider-Man India.

Other characters/actors expected to return include:

  • Jason Schwartzman as The Spot
  • Andy Samberg as Ben Reilly
  • Issa Rae as Spider-Woman
  • Brian Tyree Henry as Jefferson Davis
  • Lunas Lauren Velez as Rio Morales
  • Greta Lee as Lyla
  • Jharrel Jerome as Miles G. Morales

There also has been much speculation about the potential inclusion of live-action Spider-Men joining the Beyond the Spider-Verse cast.

Rumors have pointed to the MCU's Tom Holland popping up in Beyond the Spider-Verse , but creatives have offered a simple "no comment" when asked about a potential cameo.

Who Is the Main Villain in Spider-Man Beyond the Spider-Verse?

Spider-Verse the Spot

After making his debut in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse , Jason Schwartzman's The Spot has already been confirmed to be the primary villain for Beyond the Spider-Verse .

In a conversation with Collider , alongside his Astriod City co-star Scarlett Johansson, Schwartzman teased his big bad would be back for the third movie and will be "bigger, badder, [and] holier":

Jason Scwartzman: "There’s not much I really can say, but I’m just excited about it. It was a great experience, I loved working with them. We started doing that before this movie." Scarlett Johansson: "You can’t say one single thing? What single thing can you say?" Schwartzman: "Well I can say a few things. Bigger, badder, holier."

This is in line with what Kemp Powers, the director of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse , has said about the future of The Spot.

Before the second Spider-Verse movie, Powers revealed that "[Spot is] the villain of the next two films:"

“He’s the villain of the next two films… and let’s just say that the Spot and Miles are connected in surprising ways. The Spot is an interesting villain because he seems like a joke, but when you really look at his powers, there’s incredible potential. His ability to open portals across dimensions sets him up perfectly for the Spider-Verse.”

The Spider-Man filmmaker added that The Spot's arc "really does complement the journey of Miles," which is part of the reason why he is the main villain of the upcoming third movie as well:

“And similarly is Spot. From the very beginning he just seemed like endless potential, both visually and arc of the character. Because you know by the way that’s not a costume, that’s his skin. By the way that he’s wearing it you know it’s not a guy in a polka dot suit. That’s actually his skin. So you know, the arc of Dr. Ohnn Spot is one that does really complement, without giving away the story, it really does complement the journey of Miles in this film really well.”

What Will Happen in Spider-Man Beyond the Spider-Verse?

Spider-Verse 2 Ending

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is going to have plenty to tackle when it does eventually come to theaters.

In February 2024, Shamiek Moore told Screenrant that fans can expect "action" and for this next movie to be a "continuation" of the Across the Spider-Verse story:

"Action...you can expect Miles and Gwen. You can expect everything [laughs] you're expecting the continuation from the second one. You can expect to see The Spot; you can expect some action-packed energy and some dilemmas and problems to solve."

This continuation will likely be most present in Moore's Miles Morales trying to get back to his universe after being stranded in a dark and brooding alternative reality at the end of Across the Spider-Verse .

Spider-Verse 2 saw the young hero get stuck in a work where the "Sinister Six have been able to flourish and take over the world" and "criminality runs rampant:"

"Criminality runs rampant. We wanted to create a world where it felt like Aaron and Miles G. Morales of Earth-42 (this reality’s counterpart to Miles Morales) are the only heroes."

And, as a part of this alternate universe, the Miles fans know and love came face to face with a version of the character who - instead of becoming New York's web-slinging hero - took a villainous turn, donning the Prowler moniker just like his Uncle Aaron seen in the first movie.

The end of Across the Spider-Verse also saw a team being put together by Hailee Steinfeld's Spider-Gwen to hopefully get Miles back to his home universe.

Beyond will also seemingly further explore the idea of Canon Events (happenings that - no matter how tragic they may be - have to happen to make a Spider-Person a Spider-Person) .

Oscar Isaac's Miguel O'Hara revealed to Miles that because he is now on the wall-crawling path, certain Canon Events are going to have to happen. This would include the death of someone close to him, like his father Jefferson Davis.

All that will come alongside the ongoing conflict between Miles and The Spot, along with his continual evasion of Miguel and the Spider-Society.

Will Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Be the Final Movie?

Across the Spider-Verse Gwen Miles Pavitir

As it stands, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will likely be the last in the animated franchise.

According to Phil Lord (via FandomWire ), "[ Beyond ] is the end of Miles Morales’ trilogy:"

“It is the end of Miles Morales’ trilogy and so this whole thing is like working towards that but this obviously has its own complete film with a beginning, middle, and end and Miles starts in one place and ends in another and all the characters have their arc in this film but that’s it for us. We’re so tired.”

While that leaves the door open for potentially more movies centered on different Spider-Verse characters, the filmmakers have made it clear this is Miles' story and Beyond will bring that to a close.

However, this could also be where Sony introduces the long-rumored live-action Miles Morales, a character the studio has seemingly been prepping for quite some time.

After years of whispers about a live-action Miles movie, Sony Pictures producer Amy Pascal was asked about a few projects including a Miles movie . Pascal remained cagey on the subject but let slip, "I cannot tell you yet, but it’s coming."

This came a short time after Pascal teased that fans would likely "have to wait a couple of years" for a live-action Miles , it could be quite some time after Beyond the Spider-Verse before fans see this character on-screen in any form again.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse currently has no announced release date.

is there a journey 3 coming out

Is there going to be ‘Frieren’ season 3?

Nahila Bonfiglio

A creative new story is breathing fresh life into an ever-popular formula, and its causing a stir around Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End . The DnD-style manga recently inspired an anime, and fans are rushing to set sights on the series.

The first season of Frieren released in September of 2023, and viewers were clamoring for more before the final episode had even finished airing. They’re desperate to see the bittersweet story continue, but it took less than six months for fans to get thoroughly ahead of themselves. The manga is still releasing fresh chapters, only one season of the anime has been released so far, and yet viewers are already looking ahead to the anime’s third season.

Will Frieren release three seasons?

The first season of Madhouse’s anime adaptation of Frieren polished off its final episode on March 15, 2024 . Within minutes, fans were rushing to the web to see if a second season — and maybe even a third — was confirmed. Thus far, Madhouse and director Keiichirō Saitō have remained tight-lipped regarding the potential of a continuation, but chances seem good.

The manga is already hugely popular, and it’s still a pretty recent release. When compared to the decades-long behemoths it’s competing with — looking at you, One Piece — a series that started in 2020 is an absolute infant. It’s barely off the ground, in terms of many manga series, and it’s already stirring up widespread conversation.

The first season of the anime adaptation is just as popular, particularly among fans of the manga who are desperate to see the heartfelt story reach a fresh medium. It has yet to secure a renewal for season 2 — let alone season 3 — but with the support it’s already drumming up, it feels like a matter of time.

There are no guarantees, in the world of anime, but the stark popularity of Frieren practically guarantees it at least one more season. The manga the anime is based around recently polished off its 12th volume, and only a portion of the story set to page has reached the screen so far. There’s plenty of story left to warrant at least a season 2, and — assuming the manga continues to pump out gold — eventually a season 3.

Before we get ahead of ourselves and clamor for a third season, we should probably focus on getting a green light for season 2. Once the anime truly sinks its teeth in, collecting even more of a fan following in the process, the big wigs that occasionally purge our favorites won’t have a choice. The show will be too lucrative to drop , all but guaranteeing fans an anime that persists as long as manga creator Kanehito Yamada can keep the story running.

That should see the anime produce at least two more seasons, if not several more. As it stands, the story in Frieren warrants at least one more season, if not two, which makes it a waiting game to see just when the show will secure a renewal. It just polished off season 1 recently, so it could take a few weeks, but before summer ends fans should expect news on the popular show’s future.

  • Sherlock Holmes 3 is "still very much alive in our hearts" according to producer Susan Downey.
  • The confirmed Sherlock Holmes 3 has had a troubled production history since 2011.
  • Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are expected to return for Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.

Sherlock Holmes 3 is the follow up to 2011's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, and the continuation of the journey of Robert Downey Jr.'s version of the titular character alongside Jude Law's Dr. John Watson. The first two films in the period mystery thriller saga, which were both directed by Guy Ritchie, have a combined $1 billion haul at the global box office against a total production budget of just $215 million, proving that the Sherlock Holmes franchise is a profitable one for Warner Bros.

It’s been over a decade since the second movie in the Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes series, and despite Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes 3 being confirmed shortly after A Game of Shadows arrived, the release date for the next RDJ and Jude Law adventure remains elusive. The third film has been stuck in development hell for a few years now, with a slew of writers reportedly working on the movie's story. Despite that, updates have been coming in, and there’s much to discuss around Sherlock Holmes 3 .

Robert Downey Jr. Likely Just Lost His $1 Billion Franchise After 13 Years Of Development Hell

Robert Downey Jr. found a $1 billion franchise 13 years ago, but he likely lost it after its development hell after news of a new replacement project.

The Threequel Is "Still Very Much Alive"

With the prequel series, Young Sherlock , currently in the works with Guy Ritchie directing, attention will once again turn to the blockbuster movie franchise.

While news regarding the highly-anticpated threequel has seemingly ground to a halt, the latest news comes as an encouraging update from the producer of Sherlock Holmes 3 . Susan Downey has been championing the project in recent years and has good news for fans. While she couldn't give much in terms of a concrete update, Downey mentioned that the project is " still very much alive in our hearts " , emphasizing that finding the right story direction is key. With the prequel series, Young Sherlock , currently in the works with Guy Ritchie directing, attention will once again turn to the blockbuster movie franchise.

Read Downey's full comments below:

I mean, look, no, there's no update, other than it's still very much alive in our hearts. Every day we talk about, "What is the best next version of that?" Because anytime I see Robert and Jude together, which fortunately, I do get to see a few times a year, we hang out, and I'm just like, "Can I get these guys back on screen together?", it's magic. There needs to be a really strong reason, it needs to be a great story, and we do have some things in the works.

Young Sherlock is set to star Hero Fiennes Tiffin as the titular character.

The Sequel's Long & Troubled History

Sherlock Holmes 3 was first confirmed in 2011 shortly after the release of A Game of Shadows, but production was incredibly slow until things kickstarted again in 2018 ( via Collider ). In July 2019, it was confirmed that Rocketman filmmaker Dexter Fletcher had been recruited to direct Sherlock Holmes 3 but that update hasn't been followed up on in the years since. No official reason was given as to why Ritchie was being replaced.

Netflix's Narcos co-creator Chris Brancato was tapped by Warner Bros. to write the script for Sherlock Holmes 3 . When director Dexter Fletcher was attached to the project a 2021 release window was set. However, this never materialized, thanks most likely to the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. No new release date has been announced since, and it’s unclear if momentum on developing the delayed Sherlock Holmes 3 has picked up again since.

Will Robert Downey Jr. & Jude Law Return?

The cast of Sherlock Holmes 3 hasn’t been officially confirmed, but the stars of the first two movies in the trilogy, Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, are expected to reprise their roles . Robert Downey Jr. should be back as Sherlock Holmes in Sherlock Holmes 3 while Law is expected to return as Holmes' sidekick and voice of reason, Dr. John Watson. The rest of the cast is unclear, and it will depend on what direction the story takes. There are certainly other cast members who could reprise their roles, but it's uncertain who they would be.

Which Case Will Sherlock Crack Next?

Whatever the story of Sherlock Holmes 3 ends up being, it was clearly opened up by the ending of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. After successfully foiling Professor Moriarty's (Jared Harris) plans to instigate a war in Europe, Holmes seemingly sacrificed himself to take out Moriarty and protect Watson and his new wife, Mary. However, it was revealed that Holme's survived his fall and was none the worse for wear after all. This leaves the door wide open for a third story, and it doesn't necessarily have to follow Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle's writings.

With nothing certain yet, it's assumed that the story for Sherlock Holmes 3 will be a mystery that not only tests the duo's wits, but puts them in mortal danger as well. The likeliest option is an amalgamation of Conan Doyle's works and modern Hollywood imagination to help make the exhausted franchise exciting again.

Sherlock Holmes 3

While plot details are unknown, Sherlock Holmes 3 will be the third installment in the Sherlock Holmes franchise, starring Roberty Downey Jr. and Jude Law as the titular detective and his sidekick Dr. Watson. Although the first two films were directed by Guy Ritchie, Dexter Fletcher is set to replace Ritchie in the role of director for the third. The film may pick up where the events of the second film left off, finally answering the question of how Holmes survived his fall from the Reichenbach Falls with Professor Moriarty, as teased at the end of the previous film.

Tom Cruise Jumps Off Stadium Roof to Pass Baton to Los Angeles

No, it wasn’t a scene from “Mission: Impossible.” Tom Cruise, one of Hollywood’s most well-known movie stars, rappelled down into the Stade de France as H.E.R. played guitar, and the crowd of Olympians went wild as Paris handed over to the next Summer Games, in Los Angeles. He accepted the Olympic flag, shook a lot of hands, jumped on a motorcycle, and drove right out of the stadium and into prerecorded footage.

It’s hard to imagine a more apt melding of the Olympics’ awe-inducing athleticism and Hollywood’s showy sensibility than Cruise, who, at 62, still famously loves to perform as many of his own “Mission: Impossible” stunts as feasible in the film series. At the 2022 Cannes Film Festival , ahead of the release of “Top Gun: Maverick,” he was asked about his penchant for death-defying feats, which he might reasonably be expected to delegate to a stunt person. “No one asked Gene Kelly, ‘Why do you dance?’” he quipped.

Cruise’s carefully choreographed acrobatics (and selfies with athletes) were fit for this closing ceremony’s vibes — especially the showmanship behind them. The details of what exactly was going to happen had been kept quiet, although People reported that back in March he had filmed the segment in which he sky-dives to the iconic Hollywood sign. Nobody quite knew until now what he’d do on live television in Paris. But it’s Tom Cruise: He lives, and occasionally defies death, to give us a good time.

Downton Abbey 3 release date, cast, plot and everything you need to know

Back to Downton (again, again)?

Downton Abbey 3 cast: Who will return for Downton Abbey 3?

Downton abbey 3 plot: how does downton abbey 2 set up a sequel, downton abbey 3 trailer: any downton abbey 3 footage yet.

Downton Abbey 3 is in the works, as the threequel has finally confirmed a 2025 release date and an all-star cast with many returning characters.

Hugh Bonneville , Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery , Phyllis Logan, Robert James-Collier, Joanne Froggatt, Penelope Wilton, Lesley Nicol and more will be back, as well as Paul Giamatti and Dominic West.

Bonneville offered some details about what fans can expect from Downton Abbey 3 , promising it's the "best iteration of the film versions yet".

"It's got the usual tropes, if you like, of thrills and spills in a very Downton way, which means spilling a teacup pretty much!", the actor told Yahoo! Entertainment in June 2024, following the official confirmation of the movie.

Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming Downton Abbey 3 .

Downton Abbey 3 release date: When will Downton Abbey 3 be out in cinemas?

Downton Abbey 3 is set for release in the UK and US on September 12, 2025 .

There were three years between the first two movies, though some of the delay was due to the COVID pandemic impacting filming. That three-year gap is happening again, as Downton Abbey: A New Era was released in 2022 and the new one won't arrive until 2025.

Fans were eager to see this new movie officially announced, but before that happened there were many hopeful updates from the team.

Imelda Staunton , who plays Lady Bagshaw in the franchise, confirmed during an interview with the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show with Zoe Ball in March 2024 that a third and last Downton Abbey film was being planned. "There will be the final film – there you go," she said.

However, back in 2022, her co-star Hugh Bonneville wasn't entirely sure if it would happen. "I thought for a while that maybe there was an energy to do a third one, but I suspect that's probably not the case. I think we've probably quit on a high," he told Radio Times .

Creator Julian Fellowes was always open to the idea of more movies , even if he was equally happy if Downton Abbey: A New Era turned out to be the end for the franchise (which is not the case anymore).

"The truth is if they want more and the cast want to do more, then I'm sure we'll find a way of delivering more," he said in May 2022, when the second movie was released. "But I don't mind if it's run its course, I think that's fair enough, too."

The official cast for Downton Abbey 3 has been confirmed, with many exciting returns and some new additions.

Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Phyllis Logan, Robert James-Collier, Joanne Froggatt, Penelope Wilton, Lesley Nicol, Paul Giamatti and Dominic West are reprising their roles from previous movies and the TV show.

Related: Take a trip by Pullman train to the real Downton Abbey

"It feels amazing. A tad emotional," Dockery said in the announcement video, released in May 2024. "It's wonderful to all be back together again. You come back together and it's like no time has passed at all.

"We're so happy to announce that we're in production for the third Downton Abbey movie. We can't wait to see you."

Other returning cast members include Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Allen Leech, Michael Fox, Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Kevin Doyle, Harry Hadden-Paton, Sophie McShera, and Douglas Reith.

New cast members include Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, and Arty Froushan.

Imelda Staunton hasn't been confirmed to be returning yet, despite her previous comments confirming the threequel.

There is also one more character who won't be returning, but we must warn about spoilers , so don't read past the photo if you haven't seen the sequel yet.

downton abbey a new era, poster

Well, the obvious person who won't return is Maggie Smith, since the Dowager died at the end of the sequel , something teased since the end of the first movie. Never say never to a flashback, but it seems unlikely she'd return for a third film.

There hasn't been a confirmation for the return of Penelope Wilton as Isobel Grey either, despite earlier comments. Wilton seemed keen for a return , as she told Digital Spy in April 2023: "I think I'd come back, oh definitely. Yes. Even without Lady Grantham."

Matthew Goode was not in the sequel , due to scheduling conflicts, and the movie excused his absence by hinting at turbulent waters in Henry and Mary's relationship (which could be a plot point for a threequel, if they can get their schedules to line up!).

One big 'maybe' is Robert James-Collier as Thomas Barrow. At the end of A New Era , Barrow accepts an offer from Dominic West's Guy Dexter to join him in America. With West reprising his role for the third movie, we could expect James-Collier to appear too – but we can't be sure.

It's also unlikely we'd see Nathalie Baye or Jonathan Zaccaï again, as their story is wrapped up with the transfer of the villa to the Crawleys.

laura haddock, downton abbey 2

Well, it doesn't, really, except that time keeps moving forward and the Crawleys are still ticking.

Depending on what Fellowes has in mind, we could see the Crawleys struggling to adapt to modernisation with World War II looming on the horizon.

While this might seem like a repeat of the TV show's plot with World War I, the later conflict was much more immediately felt, and seeing how the family navigates the potential physical harm to their loved ones and home might be the kind of story that fans would find interesting.

Downton 's success has always rested on the interpersonal dynamics (aka drama!) of its characters, and it could be just as likely we see Mary and Henry struggling in their marriage as the central plot point of a third movie.

michael fox, joanne froggatt, sophie mcshera, lesley nicol, downton abbey a new era

Since Downton Abbey 3 is still being filmed, we'll be waiting a while for a trailer. Sorry.

Avatar 3 Title Revealed at D23: 'Get Ready to Journey Back to Pandora'

The sequel is in theaters Dec. 19, 2025

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures/Moviestore/Shutterstock

The third Avatar film will be titled Avatar: Fire and Ash.

The sequel, due in theaters Dec. 19, 2025, had its official title revealed Aug. 9 at Disney's D23 fan event held in Anaheim, Calif.

"Get ready to journey back to Pandora," read a message on the Avatar Instagram page.

Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña star in the films directed by James Cameron. The first of the blockbuster franchise hit theaters back in 2009, followed by the sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water , 13 years later in 2022.

Cameron, 69, told PEOPLE in December 2023 that  Kate Winslet , who joined the cast in No. 2, will reprise her role as Ronal in the third film. He said Winslet "went to school" learning from "a husband-and-wife shaman practice" to master techniques for the sequel.

"When you see [Winslet] doing that purification ritual to try to revive Kitty in the film and some of the stuff that she's going to do in movie three, that's based on actual practice," he said.

Additionally, Worthington, 48, told PEOPLE in January that the next Avatar film will be "bigger than you can imagine."

Cameron said in February that he has plans for seven Avatar movies so far. “We're fully written through movie five, and I've got ideas for six and seven, although I'll probably be handing the baton on at that point,” Cameron told PEOPLE at the time. “I mean, mortality catches up. But I mean, we're enjoying what we're doing. We're loving it. We get to work with great people."

Added Cameron, “ Star Trek , Star Wars , the world-building franchises that have been around since I was a kid, those were my inspirations. ... We're still a young universe. We're only two movies in, we're halfway through our third right now. To have that kind of cultural impact over time, you've got to pour all your heart and energy into it."

Ori 3: Will The Journey Continue?

Malena Rose

"Ori and the Blind Forest" and "Ori and the Will of the Wisps" are probably two of the most beautiful games ever produced. But what about Ori 3? It’s been more than three years since the last Ori game came out, so let's take a look at potential hints that could indicate a sequel.

Ori1

Some games are just out of this world when it comes to visuals. The Ori series definitely belongs in that category of games. Their beautiful artwork , the atmospheric soundtrack and emotional storyline about Ori, Naru and Ku is an unforgettable experience for eyes, ears and the heart.

It doesn’t come as a surprise that Ori was seen as one of the Top 7 Most Hyped Video Games of 2020 and has found a lot of fans on PC, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.

Even commercially, the game was a huge success, so it wouldn't be wrong to expect a third Ori game in the future. We will tell you whether you should expect an Ori 3 or not in this article.

Ori 3: Will of The Wisps Sequel Could Silently Be In Development, According To Leaker

Ori2

"Ori and the Will of the Wisps" was released in March 2020. After the game's great success, questions about another sequel quickly arose. However, Moon Studios initially put a stop to those speculations. In a Reddit "Ask us anything" , the developers explained that the Ori story is basically complete within the framework of the two games.

At the same time, however, the developers emphasized that by designing the end of "The Will of the Wisps" they deliberately kept a small back door open for a sequel.

The latest new movement on a potential sequel comes from a leaker named Nweedle. In March 2023, he claimed that Ori 3 is already in development, though they don't know which studio is in charge of it.

This cannot easily be refuted: In fact, Microsoft ended its cooperation with Moon Studios a while ago, after former employees of Moon Studios had sharply criticized an extremely negative workplace environment, so it would be anything but a surprise if Ori 3 is developed by another studio. Furthermore, Moon Studios is known to be actively working on another project that has nothing to do with the Ori series.

On the other hand, that's pretty much everything that has been heard about a potential Ori 3 yet, so if a sequel is really in development, we expect it to be in a very early development status. From an economic perspective, it would be surprising if we would never get to see a successor, since it just wouldn't make sense to ignore the financial potential. Our educated guess would be that a game that is connected to the Ori games will be released during the next two or three years.

Games Similar To "Ori and the Will of the Wisps"

Even though the Ori series is a masterpiece, it has some serious competitors when it comes to the gameplay. Whoever is generally keen on platformer games should also take a look at the following titles:

Rayman Legends

Rayman Legends already has a few years under its belt, but it looks great and impresses with a very creative level design. Ultimately, Rayman Legends is certainly a lot more hectic than the Ori series, but it's still a lot of fun. Pro-tip: just play the free demo!

Hollow Knight

Even closer to Ori is Hollow Knight . The game was developed by Team Cherry and is, despite their cute protagonist, pretty dark if we compare it to the Ori series. But when it comes to the gameplay, both games seem to be quite similar, although still unique in their own ways, which is why many Ori fans should at least try out Hollow Knight once.

If you've already finished Hollow Knight, check out what is already known about Hollow Knight: Silksong !
