A masterful showcase.

It has been said that playing well at Riviera can lead to success at Augusta National. While winning at one course doesn’t necessarily mean guaranteed success at the other, putting together a solid four rounds in Los Angeles in February can be a barometer for what’s to come in April. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is just the latest example of this theory.

My Eight-Year Golf Journey: How it Shapes My Motivation for My Future

As a TGR Learning Lab member, I had the honor of attending the 2024 Genesis Invitational, hosted by Tiger Woods. It was a time of opportunity, and I’m very thankful to represent the programs TGR Foundation has to offer. I first attended in 2019 and was extremely delighted to have been invited back. It felt like a reunion. I went with other TGR Learning Lab members to experience the tournament as spectators, take a glimpse behind the scenes, and explore possible careers.

Hideki’s day

A perfect round vaulted Hideki Matsuyama to a three-shot victory at The Riviera Country Club in the 2024 Genesis Invitational. Nine birdies on the round propelled the 2021 Masters champion to a final-round 62, one shot off the course record. Matsuyama’s 62 in the final round is the best final round score at Riviera on the PGA TOUR.

Eighteen holes to go

Moving day lived up to its billing Saturday at The Riviera Country Club during the third round of the 2024 Genesis Invitational. Patrick Cantlay continues to hold the lead as he has after each round this week but what was a comfortable cushion has shrunk to two shots. Cantlay’s 14-under-par 199 through 54 holes leads Xander Schauffele and Will Zalatoris, who are tied for second at 12-under.

Cantlay creates a cushion

Patrick Cantlay teed off Round 2 of the 2024 Genesis Invitational with the 18-hole lead. Throughout the afternoon, the Long Beach, Calif. native cushioned his margin on the field, posting the clubhouse lead at 13-under-par 129 after 36-holes. The trio of Jason Day, Luke List and Mackenzie Hughes are tied for second at 8-under, five shots back.

Genesis Invitational: Hideki Matsuyama's final-round 62 snatches glory at Riviera Country Club

Former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama claimed his ninth PGA Tour title as he became the first player in the history of the Genesis Invitational to card 62 in the final round at Riviera Country Club; watch the PGA Tour and more of the best golf in 2024 live on Sky Sports

Highlights of the final round of the Genesis Invitational from Riviera Country Club thumb

Hideki Matsuyama fired a stunning nine-under-par final round to emerge from the chasing pack and clinch victory at the Genesis Invitational on Sunday.

The Japanese golfer had begun the day lying tied for seventh and six shots back on overnight leader Patrick Cantlay but produced a flawless performance, which included nine birdies, to become the first player in tournament history to card 62 or better in the final round at Riviera Country Club.

Former Masters champion Matsuyama's round took him to 17-under-par for the tournament and saw him finish three shots clear of runner-ups Will Zalatoris and Luke List, while Cantlay suffered a nightmare Sunday after carding a 72 which dropped him into a tie for fourth.

Along with becoming the first Japanese player to triumph at this venue, it marked the 31-year-old's first tournament success since the Sony Open in Hawaii over two years ago and he is eager to kick on ahead of next month's The Players Championship and the return to Augusta National in April.

"This is my first top 10 since the last Players...so hopefully I can keep that momentum going," Matsuyama said.

"I think it's really important for me to keep this momentum, especially going to Augusta, so hopefully I can keep that,"

Chasing a ninth tournament victory on the PGA Tour, Matsuyama, who carded 69 and a pair of 68s in the first three rounds, could hardly have asked for a better start to the day with birdies on the first three holes followed by making par on the rest of the front nine.

Hideki Matsuyama's PGA Tour wins

He opened the back nine with another three birdies in the row, and closed out his round in exactly the same manner which vaulted him to the top of the leaderboard.

Matsuyama still had to wait for the final groups to complete their rounds before he could celebrate, but it proved to be an unassailable lead as he finally put a difficult 2023 where he was hampered by a back injury to rest.

"Ever since that injury, I was worried every week something bad might happen to my back," Matsuyama said. "But this week I had no issues, I played without any worries, so that really helped too.

"I wasn't striking the ball really well, but my chipping and putting was working a lot this week. That really helped."

Elsewhere, Tommy Fleetwood secured a top-10 finish thanks to a final round of 67 which saw him finish on eight-under for the tournament, while Rory McIlroy's 70 saw him finish as part of a group of seven tied for 24th.

McIlroy had endured a difficult start to the weekend at Riviera Country Club after opening with a three-over round of 74, but shot 66 and 69 in rounds two and three respectively and believes his game is not far off where he wants it to be.

"I'm close," McIlroy said. "I'm not quite where I want to be, but it's one of these courses where precision is so important and putting your ball in the right areas.

"If you're just slightly off your weaknesses sort of get magnified this week."

2024 Genesis Invitational leaderboard, scores: Hideki Matsuyama shoots 62 to win from six strokes back in L.A.

Matsuyama posted the lowest final round in the history of riviera country club.

Remember him? Hideki Matsuyama chased down and raced past a star-studded leaderboard Sunday at Riviera Country Club to claim the 2024 Genesis Invitational, coming back from six strokes off the lead to win his first PGA Tour event since January 2022. Carding a sensational final round 9-under 62 that included a back-nine 30, Matsuyama finished the week at 17 under for a three-stroke victory over Will Zalatoris and Luke List

With nine birdies and no bogeys on the afternoon, Matsuyama posted the second-lowest round in course history and the lowest in the fourth round of a tournament at Riviera. The ninth PGA Tour victory of his career is his first since the 2022 Sony Open.

Matsuyama's win at Riviera adds to an impressive résumé of triumphs at some of the nation's top courses: Augusta National, Muirfield Village, Firestone Country Club. The 31-year-old now holds a major championship, two World Golf Championships and a signature event to his name.

A year after missing the Tour Championship, Matsuyama is now on the inside track to return to East Lake. His victory comes with an elevated 700 FedEx Cup points -- thrusting him to third place in the standings -- and a cool $4 million, the largest winner's share of his career .

While Matsuyama topped the field at the culmination of 72 holes, he was hardly top of mind with 18 to play. Beginning the day at 8 under and a half dozen strokes behind 18-, 36- and 54-hole leader Patrick Cantlay, Japan's top star was believed to be a non-factor given not only his deficit but the laundry list of names that separated his from the top of the leaderboard.

Still, Matsuyama went about his business and got off to the type of start required to make a memorable Sunday charge.

"I wasn't striking the ball really well, but my chipping and putting was working a lot this week," said Matsuyama through an interpreter after the round.

A turkey of birdies out the gate -- a common theme in his final round -- set the pace. Six straight pars put a bow on a front-nine 32 and set the scene for a back-nine performance reminiscent of his third round at the 2021 Masters. Again, Matsuyama put three consecutive birdies on his scorecard as he took advantage of the drivable par-4 10th and par-5 11th. A bonus birdie arrived from just inside 50 feet on the difficult par-4 12th.

Matsuyama made pars on Nos. 13-14 and found himself in the lead once List started his inward half with three straight fives. However, they were soon joined by Zalatoris, Cantlay and Xander Schauffele in a five-way tie at 14 under. That only stood for a moment, however, as Matsuyama found a new gear and left his counterparts in the dust.

An approach stuck to 8 inches arrived on the 15th to put Matsuyama alongside Zalatoris, who tacked on one of his own on the 13th. Hideki's next iron shot from the tee of the par-3 16th resulted in his ball settling to just 6 inches to set up another birdie. As fast as this tournament tightened, it was busted open by Matsuyama, whose lead climbed to three when he made birdie on the par-5 17th – his last turkey of the day -- and Zalatoris found trouble on the 15th.

One last birdie bid on the par-4 finisher ultimately did not fall for a share of the course record and a potential back-nine 29, but that would have been a cherry on top. The rest of Matsuyama's final round was reminder enough of the type of golfer -- and champion -- he can be. Grade: A+

Here are the grades for the rest of the leaderboard at the 2024 Genesis Invitational.

T2. Will Zalatoris (-14):  Zalatoris seemed like an unlikely champion at the beginning of the week given how little he's played over the last year. However, he nearly pulled off the victory. Even before this week, his trajectory was good. After a missed cut at the Sony Open, he steadily improved at the American Express and Farmers Insurance Open. Now? He's back into that that top tier of favorites at the majors, including Augusta National. (Perhaps you've heard that Augusta a pretty decent facsimile for Riviera?)  Grade: A+

Luke List also finished T2.

T4. Patrick Cantlay  (-13):  For most of the tournament, the title was in Cantlay's grap ... only for the final 20 holes to be his undoing. Beginning with a poor bogey on the par-5 17th during Saturday's third round, Cantlay's tournament-record five-stroke lead at the halfway point was trimmed to two with one round to go. A par on the par-5 opener set the tone for the final round as he was stuck in mud most of the day unable to muster any mojo together. Still, the former FedEx Cup champion found himself in a share of the lead with seven holes to play. Bogeys on the 13th and 15th, combined with Matsuyama's heater, ultimately saw Cantlay get lapped and not be a factor the last few holes. Grade: A-

Xander Schauffele, Adam Hadwin also finished T4.

T10. Scottie Scheffler (-8):  Here's everything you need to know about Scheffler right now. When Rory McIlroy joined the broadcast after his round to chat for a bit, he advocated that Scheffler try a mallet putter instead of a blade but then said Scheffler does everything else so well that he is giving everyone else a chance by not going to the mallet. This will not surprise you, but Scheffler finished 2nd in the field from tee to green and 51st (of 51 who played the weekend) with the putter. New week, same Scottie. The amazing part is that everyone talks about Scheffler like he has absolutely no clue what ails him, yet he still finished in the top 10.  Grade: B-

MC. Justin Thomas (+3):  It was a disappointing conclusion to the West Coast swing for J.T. He was excellent for most of the swing but missed the smallest possible cut Friday after opening 72-73. His problem was mostly related to approach play. If this was a year ago, one might conclude that this is a massive issue, but given how good he's been for the last several months, it's fine to call it a one off and expect a bounce back when he restarts in Florida over the next few weeks.  Grade: F

DQ. Jordan Spieth:  What a strange and bizarre sport. Spieth was inside the top 10 at Riviera for most of the first few days before signing for an incorrect scorecard on Friday. After a one-bogey 66 in the first round, you had to know something insane was coming on Friday. It's just that no one realized it would result in Spieth not even playing the event on Saturday and Sunday.  Grade: F

WD. Tiger Woods: Explaining on social media that he came down with influenza this week, Tiger put his withdrawal into more clear context. Riviera was  a bizarre scene for a few hours , but the bottom line with Woods is that -- for the fourth time in his last six starts worldwide -- he had to withdraw or missed the cut at an event. There are varied reasons for this early dismissals, but the general trajectory from a golf standpoint is not great. Woods looked fine when he did play Thursday, but flu aside, he did not display a tee-to-green game that excited me as it relates to the major championships.  Grade: C+

Hideki gets in at 17 under

That should do it. Hideki Matsuyama comes home in 30 and takes a three-stroke lead into the clubhouse. Will Zalatoris will need to pull a rabbit out of his hat and eagle the par-5 17th and birdie the par-4 18th to force a playoff.

Hideki lapping the field

As quick as this thing turned into a tournament, it may be over. Hideki adds another on 17 to get to 17 under while Will Zalatoris misses his 25-foot putt for par on 15. With the Willy Z miss, the lead is three as Matsuyama finds the fairway on the finisher. A birdie will tie the course record and see Matsuyama come home in — wait for it — 29 (!!!).

Incredible Hideki ball-striking

Hideki has had four birdie looks from 18 inches or closer today in his first 16 holes. Four!

This might be a two-man race

It's down to Hideki Matsuyama and Will Zalatoris. Matsuyama holds the lead at 16 under and is in the fairway on 17 looking to add another. If he does, it may be enough to hold off Zalatoris who is in the steep — and I cannot stress that enough — STEEP fairway bunker on 15. He will need to make a par from there and add at least one more coming in assuming Matsuyama does not slip up.

Hideki adds another!

Wow, wow, wow. After an 8-inch birdie make on 15, Hideki hits his tee shot on the par-3 16th to 6 inches. He will tap that in to get to 16 under and head to the par-5 17th looking to add another one. He is currently 8 under on his round and one clear of Will Zalatoris.

Matsuyama matches Zalatoris' birdie

A birdie from Willy Z on 13 has been matched by Hideki Matsuyama on 15. He is charging and nearly hooped his second to take the lead on his own. They stand at 15 under and one clear of Luke List and Patrick Cantlay. Xander Schauffele may be in some trouble on 13 after a bogey on 12.

Hideki keeps rolling

This Hideki round reminds me of the 2017 U.S. Open, when he shot 66 in the final round to get within striking distance but ultimately fell short of Brooks Koepka. He's -6 through 14 and within one of Will Zalatoris.

We're running five wide

Luke List drops another shot on the par-4 12th which means we have five men standing atop the leaderboard. Hideki Matsuyama will have the chance to post as he is on the 14th green with List, Will Zalatoris, Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay making up the final two groups on the golf course.

Schauffele, Cantlay come up big on No. 11

After making birdie on No. 10, Xander Schauffele makes an eagle on the 11th from the greenside bunker. He gets to 14 under while Patrick Cantlay does the same after missing his 11-foot eagle attempt. They are tied for second with Will Zalatoris, Hideki Matsuyama and one behind Luke List who is struggling up the 12th. This is anyone's game.

2024 Genesis Invitational leaderboard, scores: Patrick Cantlay extends lead, Tiger Woods withdraws in Round 2

Cantlay shot a 6-under 65 to build a five-shot lead at riviera country club on friday.

Tiger Woods' withdrawal from the second round of the 2024 Genesis Invitational stole all the headlines Friday, so perhaps it makes some sense that one of the most underrated presences on the PGA Tour occupies the top of the leaderboard. Patrick Cantlay expanded his overnight lead Friday at Riviera Country Club with a sensational bogey-free 6-under 65 to stand at 13 under and five clear of Jason Day, Mackenzie Hughes and Luke List.

Cantlay's five-stroke margin at the halfway point matches the largest 36-hole lead in tournament history.

Cantlay, who opened with a 7-under 64, has had his way with Riviera throughout the years and it has trickled into this week. The former UCLA Bruin has clocked five top-20 finishes in his last six tournament appearances including a third-place finish a season ago. He has continued to play quality golf since, but the wins have not followed.

One of the most impressive all-around players on the PGA Tour, Cantlay's steadiness has not been rewarded with a trophy since the 2022 BMW Championship. Of those players who played at least 15 tournaments in the 2022-23 season, Cantlay ranked first in par-4 scoring, first in par-5 scoring and first in birdie average.

It's almost unfathomable to put up those statistics, have the killer instinct Cantlay does have and not run into a tournament win here or there. He seems to have finally run into one in the Pacific Palisades, and the world No. 7 looks keen on racing away with it with 36 to go.

1. Patrick Cantlay (-13)

It may not seem like it, but Cantlay's second round felt like a big one considering his start to the 2024 season. The former FedEx Cup champion has been in the mix after Round 1 in each tournament he has played only to see his name slowly drift down the leaderboard as the week progresses. At the Farmers Insurance Open, Cantlay started 65-73 en route to finishing outside the top 50. The following week at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am a similar story unfolded with opening rounds of 64-70 before finishing T11 in the shortened event. Instead of playing catch up and perhaps pushing the envelope, Cantlay can now play his steady game and let the field make the mistakes while they chase.

Other contenders

T2. Jason Day, Luke List, Mackenzie Hughes (-8) 5. Corey Conners (-7) T6. Will Zalatoris, Xander Schauffele, Tom Hoge (-6) T9. Tony Finau, Hideki Matsuyama (-5)

Day is a player who has had issues around Riviera in the past. Failing to finish inside the top 60 and missing three cuts across his first five starts in the Genesis Invitational, the Australian credits a switch in attitude to his new-found love for the par 71. Claiming a top-10 result last year, Day looks on well on his way to improving on this result as he is one of Cantlay's closest pursuers heading into the weekend.

"I think it's just a little bit of attitude definitely goes a long way," Day said about Riviera. "Obviously when you come here and you don't quite -- you aren't sharp off the tee and then you just -- like I said today, like if you're not quite sharp off the tee, you miss a lot of greens and if your short game's not kind of showing up, and these greens are a little tricky to read and they're fast, then that is a formula for like not a lot of success.

"But I think you kind of -- first and foremost, when you have results at a golf course, you have to try and change the mentality, then just try and change a few things. I feel like I've gained a lot more accuracy over the last few years, so that definitely helps obviously at this golf course."

Tiger among the early exits

Woods is the biggest name to not be around this weekend following his withdrawal during the second round due to illness, but he is hardly the only star to be missing from the second half of this tournament. The last two U.S. Open champions, Matt Fitzpatrick and Wyndham Clark, fell on the wrong side of the cut number as neither were able to find their footing around Riviera despite having solid histories.

Two-time PGA Championship winner, Justin Thomas, never looked comfortable either and is a disappointing early exit considering his strong start to 2024. Keegan Bradley, Chris Kirk and Sepp Straka are also among those players inside the top 30 of the Official World Golf Rankings to be packing their bags early.

"He started feeling some flu-like symptoms last night," said Rob McNamara, Tiger's longtime business partner and vice president of TGR Ventures. "[Tiger] Woke up this morning, they were worse than the night previous. He had a little bit of a fever and that, and was better during the warm-up, but then when he got out there and was walking and playing, he started feeling dizzy. Ultimately the doctors are saying he's got some -- potentially some type of flu and that he was dehydrated. He's been treated with an IV bag and he's doing much, much better and he'll be released on his own here soon."

2024 Genesis Invitational updated odds and picks

  • Patrick Cantlay: 4/6
  • Jason Day: 11-1
  • Xander Schauffele: 14-1
  • Luke List: 18-1
  • Scottie Scheffler: 20-1
  • Mackenzie Hughes: 30-1
  • Will Zalatoris: 30-1
  • Corey Conners: 30-1

Cantlay probably closes this thing out and his number is palatable, but if you want a flier there's a multiple-time PGA Tour winner with great history lurking. It may be difficult to stomach, but the 45-1 price tag on Tony Finau is intriguing. The big-hitting right hander may have found something with the putter Friday gaining more than one stroke on the greens and if that keeps up, the rest of his game is well-suited for Riviera. He has done just about everything but win at the Genesis Invitational throughout his career and he has set himself up to give another go.

Rick Gehman and Mark Immelman discuss Tiger's WD and the rest of Round 2 at Riviera. Follow & listen to The First Cut on  Apple Podcasts  and  Spotify .

Cantlay hopes for one more on par-5 17th

Cantlay stands at 12 under and four clear of the field and can make it much more difficult for his chasers if he adds another. He steps to the par-5 17th with a chance to stretch this to five and have only four players within six of his lead. It may not seem like much, but birdies like these add up when looking at a weekend deficit.

He's running downhill!

Wow, what an approach from Patrick Cantlay on the par-4 15th. From the rough, the leader hits his approach to 3 feet and pays it off with another birdie to reach 12 under. He is four clear of a trio of players in the clubhouse and will have chances coming in to push it even deeper.

Can Cantlay push the lead even deeper?

The overnight leader, Patrick Cantlay, is cruising through the most difficult stretch of Riviera and look to push his margin even wider. Cantlay stands at 11 under and three clear of Luke List, Mackenzie Hughes and Jason Day in the clubhouse. Each additional birdie will make the weekend more difficult for his pursuers.

Update from the grounds

Tiger woods' wd due to illness.

It is not his back but rather an illness that will keep Tiger Woods from competing in the second half of this tournament. According to multiple media members, there are a couple firetrucks and an ambulance on the scene at Riviera.

Tiger Woods done for the day

The back spasms appear to be too much for the cat. He seems to be done for the day through six holes and will be calling it quits. Woods was 2 over for the tournament and battling to make the cut. We will provide more once he hear from the 15-time major winner.

Tiger drops another

It may be close to panic time for Team Woods. Reports from the broadcast are suggesting he is not moving as swiftly as yesterday and he drops yet another shot on the par-4 5th. He stands at 2 over, 11 strokes behind Patrick Cantlay and outside the top 50 that are projected to make the cut. He only has until No. 11 to make up ground as the bulk of the back nine is proving difficult.

Justin Thomas moving in wrong direction

This has been a dreadful start for the former world No. 1. He starts 5-5-4-4 and is 2 over for the day and 3 over for the tournament. He is in danger of missing the cut if he doesn't do something soon. Meanwhile, Tiger gives back his opening birdie with a bogey on No. 4. He's at 1 over and 10 behind Patrick Cantlay.

Back-to-back pars

No harm, no foul for Tiger on Nos. 2-3. Back-to-back pars have Woods at 1 under for the day and even par for the tournament. He finds himself just inside the top 50 and nine off the pace of Jason Day who has one hole left. Those are important ranges to monitor given the cut line implications.

2024 Genesis Invitational leaderboard, scores: Patrick Cantlay will battle Xander Schauffele, Will Zalatoris

Cantlay has led through all three rounds of the genesis invitational.

The third round of the 2024 Genesis Invitational may not have included the theatrics and drama of the first 36 holes, but it finished with the same man sitting atop the leaderboard. Patrick Cantlay at 14 under will head into the final round at Riviera Country Club with a two-stroke lead over Xander Schauffele and Will Zalatoris after shooting 1-under 70 on Saturday.

Cantlay's Moving Day was decidedly different from his first two rounds. Commanding a tournament-record five-stroke lead after 36 holes, the eight-time PGA Tour winner saw pursuer after pursuer throw punch after punch.

Schauffele was the first to make a move as an eagle on the par-5 1st propelled the American's name directly under his Ryder Cup partner. he continued to pester with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 10 and 11 to get within three, but Cantlay held steady.

A birdie from the blade of Cantlay on the par-5 11th moments later extended his lead back to four. There would be ebbs and flows throughout the back nine as runs were made by Harris English and then Zalatoris. English finished the day four back, while both Schauffele and Zalatoris sit at 12 under with some clutch birdies falling near the end of their rounds.

The lead shuffled between three and four strokes for most of the back nine as Cantlay responded with a pitching wedge drawing from right to left to access a tucked pin location on the par-4 13th to set up a successful birdie conversion from 5 feet. He appeared keen on adding to his lead, but instead the edge got trimmed to two for the first time all day when Cantlay made an inexplicable bogey on the par-5 17th and injected new life into this tournament.

The three countrymen will now face off in the final round Sunday with Cantlay and Schauffele occupying the final pair. In unison throughout seemingly every aspect of life from career milestones to PGA Tour victories to even vacations in Napa Valley, Cantlay and Schauffele remain by one another's side. They'll shake hands on the first tee, share laughs and play 18 holes like they do most weeks, only this time the stakes will be higher as a title at the historic Riviera awaits.

1. Patrick Cantlay (-14):  Cantlay's round was not littered the par breakers of his first two, but it was impressive most of the way. Never getting ahead of himself and seeing multiple players go on heaters, Cantlay stuck to his own game. He took what Riviera gave him and stood at a measly even par after a nice save on the short par-4 10th. Two back-nine birdies, including a bonus on the par-4 13th, gave the former FedEx Cup champion a chance to hold a four-stroke lead heading entering Sunday's final round. However, a birdie hole turned into a bogey, and Cantlay's comfortable edge of four shrunk to a sweaty two.

Other contenders

T2.  Xander Schauffele, Will Zalatoris (-12) 4. Luke List (-11) T5. Jason Day, Harris English (-10) T7. J.T. Poston, Hideki Matsuyama, Corey Conners (-8)

Schauffele is now without a bogey in his last 36 holes, and he will need more of the same Sunday given the deficit. Working with his new swing coach, Chris Como, Schauffele is slowly getting more comfortable, and it has showed in a big way the last two days with rounds of 66 and 65. Schauffele and Cantlay last played in the final group together at the 2022 BMW Championship where Cantlay came out on top. Schauffele would love nothing more than to return the favor.

"It's a pretty comfortable pairing for us," said Schauffele. "We play a lot week in and week out and we both love to compete. There's nothing more than we like to do is compete in big events. We've done it a few times in the past and taken shots at each other; it's something we talk about and something we want to keep doing."

Is Zalatoris officially back?

Zalatoris' return to competitive golf following a back injury was -- to put it bluntly -- ugly. Carding a couple rounds in the 80s at the Hero World Challenge and missing the cut badly at the Sony Open, Zalatoris has now found his former quality in California. Torrey Pines allowed his tee-to-green prowess to shine, and Riviera is doing the same. He has always been a player to thrive on more difficult setups (just look at his major championship record), and this two-tournament stretch may be enough to suggest he is all the way back. He ranks fourth in strokes gained tee to green and first in strokes gained approach in vintage Zalatoris fashion.

2024 Genesis Invitational updated odds, picks

  • Patrick Cantlay: 6/5
  • Xander Schauffele: 3-1
  • Will Zalatoris: 4-1
  • Luke List: 14-1
  • Jason Day: 20-1
  • Harris English: 28-1

Cantlay looks in total control and will have the luxury of playing from ahead. A four-stroke lead would have been much nicer, but a plus-money price on the steadiest player of the bunch seems like the right play even though the lead was trimmed to two. Schauffele and Zalatoris will be difficult to skirt past, but Cantlay's well-rounded game should allow him to prevail at a course he's been knocking at the door at for years.

Schauffele and Zalatoris get in the house

The two Americans finish the day at 12 under after matching 65s. Patrick Cantlay is on the 16th green at 15 under and will face 25 feet for birdie. Cantlay will likely two putt and head to the par-5 17th with a good chance to regain a four-stroke lead. Four seems like an awfully lot more than three when it comes to a 54-hole lead.

Schauffele and Zalatoris trying to make a move

Patrick Cantlay tacked on a birdie on 13 to get to 15 under and just knocked in a nice par putt on 14 to remain there. Up ahead, Xander Schauffele and Will Zalatoris both made birdies on the par-3 16th to get within four. They both have real chances to get with three on the par-5 17th. It's a rice between them to get into the final group alongside Cantlay tomorrow. Schauffele has the inside lane since he will finish first.

Another big putt from Cantlay

Our leader connects from 11 feet on the difficult 12th to stay at 14 under after a birdie on the previous hole. Cantlay went from rough to rough and was able to get up-and-down to maintain his four-stroke lead. Despite players throwing some punches, the lead is still four and Cantlay looks steady as ever.

Cantlay salvages par on No. 10

Our leader makes a 5-foot par effort on the short 10th to remain at 13 under and three clear of the field. Xander Schauffele, Harris English, Will Zalatoris and soon to be Jason Day all find themselves at this number. Cantlay needs to pick one up on the par-5 11th to give himself a little more wiggle room before the difficult run of holes from Nos. 12-15.

Here they come!

There are now six players at 9 under and four behind Patrick Cantlay including Will Zalatoris. Back-to-back birdies around the turn have Zalatoris in second place with eight holes to play. Xander Schauffele is at 9 under as well and just reached the surface in two on the par-5 11th. He has roughly 30 feet for his second eagle of the day and to cut Cantlay's lead in half.

Harris English makes his move

He was as long as 200-1 overnight and Harris English now finds himself in a share of second place. He's 5 under on his day and just converted a huge par save on the par-4 12th to keep his momentum rolling. Cantlay looks to be stuck in neutral as the front nine is proving a little more difficult than days past. If English can skirt past this difficult stretch and tack another birdie to his card on the par-5 17th, his 10-under number may look awfully good.

Cantlay drops one

The leader failed to get up-and-down on No. 3 and has since added a par to his scorecard to stand at 13 under. I'll be interested to see how close some of those on the back nine of Riviera can get come the end of the day. Russell Henley is making his way through the most difficult stretch right now at 7 under. If he can get to 9 under, he may be sitting pretty.

List misses chance to cut into lead

It was a beautiful mid iron into the 2nd hole from Luke List but he is unable to convert. Missing his 5-foot birdie bid, List remains at 9 under and five behind Patrick Cantlay as they exchanged birdies on the first.

Cantlay to begin final round

He is paired with Luke List and still holds a five-stroke lead despite some early movement. Cantlay is 0 for 7 in his career converting the 36-hole lead into a victory, but never has he held such a margin.

Schauffele makes big leap on No. 1

That's how you begin Moving Day. Xander Schauffele looks to track down his good pal, Patrick Cantlay, and he gets off to a dream start with an eagle-3 on No. 1. Schauffele is now at 8 under and among the cluster of pursuers in a share of second place five off the pace. Up ahead, Adam Scott is surging.

Scheffler squanders chance on No. 1

You can't be making par on No. 1 and expect to make up ground. Scottie Scheffler makes par after being greenside in two and remains nine off the pace of Patrick Cantlay. We are seeing scores be had with players like Seamus Power getting to 5 under on his round.

Jason Day, AT&T Byron Nelson

The PGA Tour returns to the Lone Star State for the third time this season, as the CJ Cup Byron Nelson takes center stage two weeks before the PGA Championship at Valhalla.

This week’s field does not feature a ton of firepower, with Jordan Spieth being the only player ranked within the top 20 of the world. Defending champion Jason Day , Tom Kim, and Will Zalatoris will also tee it up this week, as will Presidents Cup hopefuls Adam Scott, Si Woo Kim, and Sungjae Im.

TPC Craig Ranch, located north of Dallas in McKinney, will host this tournament for the fourth time. K.H. Lee won it in 2021 and 2022, at 25-under and 26-under, respectively, the first two instances in which this layout held it.

Day won at 23-under last year.

CJ Cup Byron Nelson Odds:

Here are the current odds for players to win, per DraftKings:

  • Jordan Spieth +1400
  • Jason Day +1800
  • Will Zalatoris +2200
  • Si Woo Kim +2200
  • Sungjae Im +2500
  • Alex Noren +2500
  • Adam Scott +2500
  • Tom Hoge +2800
  • Min Woo Lee +2800
  • Stephan Jaeger +3000
  • Byeong Hun An +3000
  • Tom Kim +3000
  • Keith Mitchell +3500
  • Thomas Detry +4000

CJ Cup Byron Nelson Predictions

TPC Craig Ranch presents one of the easier challenges seen on the PGA Tour, so it's no surprise to see so many birdies on this course year in and year out.

As such, we are looking at players who make birdies in bunches to perform well on this generous layout this week.

Jordan Spieth finishes in the top 5 in his hometown

Jordan Spieth, who has had an up-and-down season thus far, currently ranks 11th on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained and third in birdie or better conversion percentage at 37.54%. This stat takes Spieth’s total number of birdies made this season (134) and divides that by the total number of greens hit (357).

He may play erratic at times, but Spieth has once again relied on his putter to keep himself in the mix on multiple occasions. He obviously has made plenty of birdies, too.

We see him contending again at TPC Craig Ranch, where he finished solo second two years ago and tied for ninth in 2021. We like the Dallas native to finish in the top 5 at +360.

Jordan Spieth, RBC Heritage

Mark Hubbard continues strong play

Thirty-four-year-old Mark Hubbard has not missed a cut in the 12 events he has played this year. He tied for fourth at the rain-shortened AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am , his best individual finish. But Hubbard also finished solo third at last week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans , alongside Ryan Brehm in the two-man team-play event.

He has played well, partly thanks to his ability to make plenty of birdies. The San Jose State product has made 187 of them this season, which ranks 5th on the PGA Tour. Given that TPC Craig Ranch yields plenty of par-breakers, Hubbard will rely on his solid tee-to-green play to make a ton of birdies this week.

DraftKings has Hubbard listed at +650 to finish within the top 10, but if you feel bullish like we do, +1400 for a top-5 finish is a solid price.

Mark Hubbard, Zurich Classic of New Orleans

Tom Hoge bounces back after missed cut

Widely regarded as one of the best ball-strikers on the PGA Tour, Tom Hoge will contend again this week in the Dallas area.

He missed the cut at last week’s Zurich Classic, but before that, he picked apart Harbour Town Golf Links over the first 36 holes and was in the mix for most of the weekend. A disappointing 2-over 74 final round dropped him a few spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 18th, a result much worse than what his performance indicated.

Hoge has played well in other big events this year, namely in California, where he tied for sixth at Pebble Beach and finished solo eighth at Riviera. He has had a solid year, even though he did not receive an invitation to Augusta National .

Still, Hoge ranks behind only Scottie Scheffler on the PGA Tour in strokes gained: approaching the green. He also ranks second in total birdies made this season with 209. His 4.58 birdies per round ranks ninth on the PGA Tour.

Hoge is a sneaky-good putter as well. During his 39 rounds this season, Hoge has averaged 81.5 feet of putts made per round, good for fifth on the PGA Tour. He has all the pieces to play at the highest level, and considering this week’s weaker field, we like Hoge to finish in the top-5 at +650.

Tom Hoge, Zurich Classic of New Orleans

CJ Cup Byron Nelson Longshot Pick

Since missing the cut at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in mid-March, Adam Schenk has recorded three top-20 finishes, including a tie for fifth at the Valero Texas Open and a tie for 12th at The Masters.

At +5500 to win, we like the idea of Schenk finally breaking through and securing his first PGA Tour victory at that price.

Although he struggles somewhat with his ball striking, Schenk still finds plenty of ways to make birdies, ranking seventh on tour in total birdies made this season. He also makes plenty of putts from inside of 10 feet, an essential part of the winning formula regardless of the course.

Schenk has been trending in the right direction, and considering he did not play at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, he will arrive in Texas well-rested and refreshed.

Adam Schenk, RBC Heritage

CJ Cup Byron Nelson Winner

With the CJ Group taking over the sponsorship naming rights for this year’s tournament, we believe a player represented by this South Korean conglomerate will emerge victorious.

As such, we are picking Si Woo Kim to win his fifth career PGA Tour event this week, his first since the 2023 Sony Open in Hawaii.

Kim has had a solid year, making all 11 cuts while recording five top 20 finishes. His best result came at The Players Championship , where he tied for sixth, while his worst finish came at The Genesis Invitational, where he tied for 44th.

He has a beautiful swing, and the stats reflect that. Kim currently ranks fourth in strokes gained: tee-to-green this season, but his putter has held him back. He is currently 141st on the PGA Tour in strokes gained putting.

Si Woo Kim, RBC Heritage

Still, the Seoul, South Korea native makes plenty of birdies, a necessity on this course. He has made 178 of them this season—good for 11th on the PGA Tour—and has also recorded nine eagles, which ranks fourth. Kim can go low, which explains why he ranks within the top 12 on tour in both adjusted and actual scoring averages.

Kim resides in the Dallas area, so that should surely help him, too.

We love his price at +2200 to win this week. Only Jordan Spieth and Jason Day have shorter odds than Kim, which is a testament to Kim’s talent and the weak field.

How Theo Epstein Could Help Solve PGA Tour’s Pressing Issues

Epstein is already getting involved.

Theo Epstein played a major role in improving the MLB experience for fans watching both in the stadium, and he might be able to do the same for PGA Tour golf fans.

It appears that’s the hope at least.

Golfweek reported earlier this month that Epstein, who joined Fenway Sports Group as a senior advisor in February, spoke at a PGA Tour Player Advisory Council (PAC) meeting at Hilton Head ahead of the RBC Heritage. Epstein returned to FSG with golf as part of the ever-expanding portfolio. FSG spearheaded a conglomerate of sports owners, Strategic Sports Group (SSG), that recently invested in the PGA Tour with the creation of PGA Tour Enterprises.

According to Golfweek, Epstein made a presentation at the PAC meeting about how MLB sought to change the sport and how it was presented to better suit the needs of fans.

Story continues below advertisement

Speaking with NESN’s Tom Caron and The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier on the first episode of the “310 To Left” podcast , Epstein explained his potential role in doing something similar with the Tour.

“There’s a lot going on there now. It’s sort of the early innings, so I’ve spent a little time trying to get up to speed and get the lay of the land,” Epstein explained. “Try to call on my experience to provide some assistance wherever I can. I was part of the rule-change process at MLB, for example, with the pitch timer and other rule changes in 2023. Golf’s at a moment in time where they’re leaning into their future and thinking about where they can progress as a Tour and a sport. My experience with MLB might come in handy here or there just adding another perspective.”

That might be exactly what golf need at this point. The sport is in an uncomfortable spot at the moment with the creation and growth of LIV Golf leading to a bifurcation of the professional game. As the sport’s most important power-brokers — the Tour, LIV, the Saudis, SSG — all work to get a framework merger agreement to the next stage, the Tour is dealing with sagging TV ratings. The product at times feels stale, and while there is no shortage of money in professional golf, the long-term prognosis is murky at best.

That should sound familiar to baseball fans.

“I was really inspired by the hope and plan to make it better for the fans,” PGA Tour PAC member Max Homa said earlier this month, per Golfweek. “I think we hit this year-and-a-half or two-year rut as both golfers and golf leagues that was just about making the players happy, and unfortunately and quite obviously, the fans were not benefited by that.”

Speaking on “310 To Left” about where baseball can still evolve and improve, Epstein hit on something that can also be applied to golf.

“Left to their own devices, (MLB) clubs and players are going to seek to optimize performance,” he said. “That’s what they should do. GMs and players are paid to perform and win, not necessarily put the most entertaining product out there. That’s not their job.”

The golf world has been impacted by that thinking, too. Purse sizes have exploded in recent years, and everyone wants a piece of the pie, especially with LIV tipping the scales. That can be felt on the course, too, where pace-of-play issues are undeniable, while sweeping changes to the actual golf produdct (for example, equipment changes) have been met with heavy resistance from the player-run PGA Tour.

“I think as demonstrated by the commissioner with leadership in the 2023 rule changes, it is the job of central baseball to create an environment where incentives for those who compete — GMs, organizations, players — are essentially aligned in such a way that competing and optimizing within a certain structure also produces a great product.

“Therefore, the competition is aligned with entertainment and provides a great product for the fans.”

Just switch out baseball for golf there, and it’s easy to see the parallels and how an innovative mind like Epstein could benefit the sport. Given the power dynamic in golf, where the players have a lot of power, it’s going to be a challenge. Ultimately, Epstein, SSG and the PGA Tour will need to show and convince players that what’s best for the fans is best for everyone in the long run.

“Theo’s point (about baseball) was very much that the genesis of the changes was fan-centered and that effective fan-centered changes mean the game wins which means the players win, too,” an unnamed player told Golfweek.

You’d be hard-pressed to find someone more capable of impacting that sort of change than Epstein, whose track record speaks for itself.
