Hodgson performing Big in Scotland, in a tartan blazer

Kieran Hodgson: Big in Scotland review – fun show has its Dundee cake and eats it

Pleasance Courtyard, Edinburgh After moving to Glasgow, the Yorkshire standup dreams of reinventing himself as a Scotsman – but will faking an accent and ordering vegan haggis be enough?

T he arrival of a new Kieran Hodgson set can’t fail to excite fringe-goers: his three nerdy, intensely funny shows in the late 2010s (on cycling , classical music and Britain’s relationship with Europe) were each rightly nominated for the Edinburgh comedy award. This year’s return is particularly mouthwatering for we north Britons, as the Yorkshireman turned soft southerner addresses Anglo-Scottish relations and his move to Glasgow, where, as an actor in the sitcom Two Doors Down , he has lived since 2020. If that sounds tailor-made to titillate Edinburgh crowds – well, Hodgson does not disappoint.

From its introduction onwards, it’s a show that delights in teasing its audiences, English and Scottish both, and in having its (Dundee) cake and eating it. In a heavy Scottish accent, Hodgson voices concerns about Englishmen aping Scottish accents. National stereotypes are undermined – but also zeroed in on for laughs, as with a fantasy musical sequence that finds immigrant Kieran welcomed tae Glesga by the kitsch music-hall star Harry Lauder . But, cheerfully wise to the shoogliness of the endeavour, Hodgson keeps both plates spinning: the dream of reinventing himself as Scottish, and the acknowledgment that “Scottish” is a complicated category.

For all that Hodgson dismisses his earlier shows as so many “facts and figures and silly voices from years gone by”, Big in Scotland is cut from similar cloth, and has similar (minor) weaknesses. As with his (pre-)Brexit show ’75 , there’s a framing device (this time about a best man’s speech gone wrong) that strives for emotional significance. It’s fun enough, but feels a bit strenuous, and manoeuvres our host towards some overdetermined learning as Big in Scotland reaches its conclusion.

Even if the effort is futile to tie up Anglo-Scottish relations in a neat, hour-long narrative knot, we’re usually laughing too hard to care. Whether he’s learning Gaelic, offending his co-stars with loose opinions on Scottish independence or ordering vegan haggis in a Highland pub, Hodgson comes armed with limitless pert observations about his new countryfolk, a diverting array of vocal caricatures and jokes within self-abasing jokes about his failure to assimilate. For a show that’s sure to be – deservedly – Big in Edinburgh, look no further.

Kieran Hodgson: Big in Scotland, Edinburgh Fringe, 2023

Time Out says

The brainbox English comic returns with a deliciously provocative homage to his adopted home of Scotland

This review is from the 2023 Edinburgh Fringe.

Kieran Hodgson is the master of high-concept stand-up: his previous Fringe hits have tackled such delightfully esoteric subjects Lance Armstrong, classical music, and the 1975 referendum on Europe.

This year he’s trying something even more audacious: doing a comedy show about Scotland, while also very much being English.

To be fair, ‘Big in Scotland’ is not quite aiming for the same kamikaze impact as Stewart Lee’s infamous routine about ‘the Scotch’ . There are some mitigating factors. For starters he looks and dresses a bit like David Tennant these days. More to the point, he now not only lives in Scotland but is indeed, in his own way, big in it.

The show, then, is a (probably somewhat embellished) account of his move to Glasgow after landing a role on the popular Scottish TV series ‘Two Doors Down’. The show is nominally an enthusiastic tribute to his new home. Nonetheless , he is deliciously *aware* of the intense possibilities for annoying his audience.

There are jokes about the Scottish, and their diet of ‘porridge and resentment’, though the harshest zingers tend to conveniently be attributed to his friends.

More insidious is his clear intention of simply being amusingly annoying: the virtuosic opening monologue in which he looks extremely pleased with himself while launching into a long passage of perfectly enunciated Scots Gaelic is probably more calculated to wind the average Scottish audience member up than the insults.

And then there’s the main story, in which Hodgson casts himself in the role of a jaded, inathentic Englishman who screwed up the best man’s speech at his friend’s wedding – filling it with geeky facts and clever wordplay but no actual emotions – and decided to go and seek redemption over the border. The schtick that he was terrible person who needed to change is an excuse for some gloriously near-to-the-knuckle stuff as he regales us with the (possibly exaggerated) story of how he alienated his co-stars by slagging off Glasgow accents and Scottish independence, and only later came to understand them both culturally and literally.

‘Big in Scotland’ is Hodgson writ large: a geeky love letter to his new home, an epic work of self-mockery – there seems to be no doubt that he has been very nerdishly learning Scots Gaelic – but also a very clever exploration of the complicated, somewhat one-sided tension that exists between the English and the Scottish. Some might see it as a bit of a cop-out that he makes it through the show without seriously offending his substantially Scottish audience. But that in itself is a pretty spectacular feat when you’re sailing as close to the bone as this.

EDINBURGH 2023: Kieran Hodgson Q&A

Big in Scotland comes to Edinburgh in August

pixeltracker

BWW caught up with Kieran Hodgson to chat about bringing Big In Scotland to the 2023 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Tell us a bit about Big In Scotland.

Hello! My shows are these kind-of one-man storytelling monologue things with characters and silly voices and hopefully a common idea that holds it together. This year's common idea? I move to Scotland and I'm trying to be someone different, seeking out change in a country that wrestles with change all the time. It's an attempt to understand a place that in some ways is intensely familiar, in other ways strange and unknown, and at the same time find a 'New Scottish Kieran' who is better than 'Old English Kieran'. But is that even possible? Find out this August!

I saw a preview of the show in Glasgow in March [side note: it was fantastic] has it changed much from the work in progress?

Thank you so much for coming and I'm glad you liked it! Cards on the table, it's changed a great deal and I hope that I haven't made it much worse for you. The central idea remains the same – I move to Scotland, I wrestle with who to be up here – but as ever my early drafts are far too busy and there's been quite a lot of work to make the show shorter and clearer. Fundamentally, I've had to tackle the question of 'why would anyone care about this?', seeing as on the surface this is the story of a man moving house, which ain't exactly Mission: Impossible. Have I answered that question? Find out this August!

It's quite a personal show for you, does that make it more nerve-wracking?

Oh I wish I could just write fiction, but my imagination is terrible and so I'm locked into the current formula: a rich real-world topic wedded to some sort of personal discovery. I imagine and fear that audiences must be terribly bored of it by now. 'Why is this man still talking about himself? There's nothing of worth or interest in him.' So yes, I don't fear the personal exposure so much as how dreary that exposure must be for members of the public, especially when there are people with far more engaging psyches at the Fringe. And people who can do trapeze. Go see them.

Who would you like to come and see Big in Scotland?

I guess this show is for you if you want to see someone wrestle with big questions of nationhood and individuality in a medium very poorly suited to it, and without the talent to reach any useful conclusions. If you like hearing different accents, if you like a song without any accompanying music, if you like a painfully sincere final 5 minutes, then this is the show for you. Oh, and if you like Two Doors Down then please come along, it is almost entirely unlike Two Doors Down.

What would you like audiences to take away from it?

Dear audience member, please take away from my show the sense that the more I know about Scotland, the less I understand, but that the investigation is worth it. I think that there's a great many assumptions made about the United Kingdom and how its constituent nations interrelate, and whatever future you see for us, it will probably be healthier if we all make an effort to break those assumptions down. Oh, and be yourself and all that. Thanks for coming!
