Songwriter, artist and producer Shy Carter has reached all corners of the industry with his early success. With credits that span Kane Brown’s “Heaven” to Charlie Puth’s “One Call Away,” Carter is one of the most formidable up-and-coming talents in Nashville and beyond. He is among the writers behind Billy Currington's “It Don't Hurt Like it Used To,” Sugarland’s smash hit “Stuck Like Glue” and Rob Thomas’ single “Someday.” In addition to his feature on Tim McGraw’s “Way Down,” Carter has collaborated with Keith Urban on both “Never Comin’ Down” and “My Wave.” Named to Variety ’s 2018 Hitmakers list, he has also worked with Jason Derulo, Meghan Trainor, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Lopez, Nelly and more. His roots in gospel, jazz, R&B and soul developed into an early career in hip-hop, but his gift for storytelling and love of organic instrumentation led to a natural transition into country music. Now, with a transcendent style perfectly suited to the times, he’s ready to stand on his own as a country artist. With its earthy groove, laid-back beat and unflagging spirit, Carter’s debut radio single “Good Love” is a fitting introduction to the man behind the music. Described as “a breezy, inspirational anthem with skittering high-hats and crisp piano… [that] underscores Carter’s grand ambitions” ( Rolling Ston e ), “Good Love” and his second Warner Music Nashville release “All Night” are available now. The born entertainer closed out the year visiting radio stations and media partners across the nation on his first-of-its-kind, socially distanced radio tour and has been named a 2021 Artist to Watch by Amazon Music, MusicRow magazine, Pandora, Sounds Like Nashville and more.

Carter will be featured in the Amazon Music Original Documentary For Love & Country, premiering April 7.

Shy Carter Talks ‘Beer With My Friends’ and New Artist Journey

Shy Carter gets a beer with some of his famous friends!

Shy Carter Talks ‘Beer With My Friends’ and New Artist Journey

Shy Carter, David Lee Murphy and Cole Swindell are “seeing life through a rose-colored, neon lens” in their collaboration, “Beer With My Friends,” released earlier this summer. The unapologetically country song finds the three artists trading lines as they sing about a stress-free night out with friends and a couple of beers. Aided by high-powered country guitars, the tune opens with the group singing the energetic chorus before keeping the groove going in the verses. The song was written by Carter, Murphy and Bryan Simpson, and Carter says after Simpson came up with the initial premise, the song flowed out quickly.

“Right away that day, [Simpson] just came in and was like, ‘Yeah. I had this idea, ‘Beer With My Friends,’” Carter told Sounds Like Nashville. “He just started singing a little bit of it, and we just looked at him like, ‘Yeah that’s awesome.’ David started singing along with him and that was it. It just came through real fast.”

Including Murphy on the track came naturally, said Carter, as the two recorded their own demos of the song and then decided to mesh their versions. They had room for one more artist on the epic country jam, however, which is when Swindell came into play.

“I’ve been wanting to work with Cole for a long time. I really love his music,” says Carter. “I would run into him here and there and we were just like, ‘Man, we gotta work, we gotta work.’ He’s on the same label at Warner, so I had them reach out to him and just see if he liked it and if he wanted to do something. He told me that as soon as he heard it, he knew it’s a smash and he wanted to get on there. That just came together pretty effortlessly too.”

Carter then brought in country superstar Kenny Chesney and legendary producer Buddy Cannon to produce the track and solidify its unique country groove. Carter, Murphy and Swindell are also featured in a feel-good video for the track, which was released August 13.

As his second official radio single following his debut, “Good Love,” “Beer With My Friends” continues to establish Carter one of the genre’s most promising new stars. Although the Tennessee-born singer is new to the artist side of the business, he’s been working as a songwriter for many years and boasts a long list of song credits, including Sugarland’s “Stuck Like Glue,” Charlie Puth’s “One Call Away,” Kane Brown’s “Good As You,” and more. The music veteran says he doesn’t mind being called “new” despite his lengthy experience in the business, and he’s looking forward to introducing his brand of “country soul” music.

“I would say it’s a really soulful take on this beautiful country music. It’s like country soul, baby,” he says of his music. “It’s got a lot of different flavors in it, which, my music’s always been like that. It’s always been inclusive of anything that’s just good. Anything that can bring value to the song, I want to put it in there. I’ve got some heartfelt songs, and some fun songs, and just something you can feel that can put a smile on your face and make you feel good.” Carter is currently working on a project that will feature both “Good Love” and “Beer With My Friends.” The singer can also be found opening for Tyler Rich on his Two Thousand Miles Tour beginning September 28 in San Jose, CA.

Shy Carter breaks it down on the Grand with “Hard” – Out Now

shy carter tour

“‘Hard’ was a hard song to write. It was painful. Life gives you so many chances to give up and it seems like the easiest thing to do,” shares Carter. “But even the easy way can be much harder than expected because nothing really comes easy in life. The most fulfilling thing is to stay the course and continue fighting for what you believe in.”

Recorded live inside his home studio, the Carter, Nathan Chapman, and Bryan Simpson-penned song was last released in full production as an Amazon Original track that’s available on the For Love & Country official playlist  on Amazon Music. Carter is among the featured artists in the Amazon Music Original feature-length documentary. In addition, the 2021 Amazon Music Artist to Watch taped a live performance clip to complement the striking ballad.

Carter proved his in-demand status as a bona fide entertainer with a recent string of amped-up appearances around Nashville, TN. Capping his FREE monthly residency run, Shy Carter and Friends , with a third takeover atop The Skydeck on Broadway at Assembly Food Hall in Fifth & Broadway on Wednesday (6/15), the rooftop party quickly followed a jam-packed CMA Fest. Doubling up with back-to-back performances as well as hosting duties – for the CMA Fest Nighttime Concert, presented by Warner Music Nashville, at Ascend Amphitheater (6/11) – he also participated in two For Love & Country panels.

As one of the most formidable rising stars, Carter will fulfill a lifelong dream as he makes his Grand Ole Opry debut next Saturday (6/25) . CMT calls the multi-hitmaker “a cut above the rest” with “unmatched talents.” Fans can purchase tickets to catch his “signature country-soul swagger” (according to E! News ) during this milestone night here .

Hear Tim McGraw, Shy Carter Take a Tour of the South in New Song ‘Way Down’

By Jon Freeman

Jon Freeman

Tim McGraw and Shy Carter take a celebratory tour of the South in their newly released collaboration “Way Down,” the latest in a series of tracks McGraw has put out ahead of a yet-to-be-announced solo album.

“Way down in Alabama got the Dreamland/B-ham, Mobile, Muscle Shoals,” intones McGraw, name-checking a few of the state’s most well-known cities and one of its beloved barbecue joints. It continues apace, lauding the towns (and women) of Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas, and others, marrying a swaggering, swampy rhythm to Carter and McGraw’s gospel-infused shouts in each chorus. Carter, a singer-songwriter who’s helped pen hits for Sugarland (“Stuck Like Glue”) and Charlie Puth (“One Call Away”), also breaks into a rap that praises “the crickets and the dogs and yee-haws and the grandmas.”

Earlier in September, the pair performed the song live at the iHeartRadio Music Festival, which will be broadcast on the CW at 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday, October 2nd.

McGraw’s most recent solo album is 2015’s Damn Country Music , which he followed with the long-awaited duets album with wife Faith Hill, The Rest of Our Life . Since 2018, McGraw has released a series of singles and standalone tracks including “ Neon Church ,” “Thought About You,” and, most recently, a cover of the Cars’ “ Drive .”

Interview: Shy Carter talks Opry performances with his daughter, new writes and new music.

James Daykin

Shy Carter has had songs cut by the likes of Sugarland, Keith Urban, Rob Thomas and Kane Brown. Sure, everyone loves Brown’s ‘Heaven’, which Carter co-wrote but he also helped Kane Brown craft ‘Learning’, which is a far superior song to our ears! We first met Shy when he came over to the UK for the C2C festival last March and have been big fans of his since then, falling in love with his ‘The Rest of Us’ EP which contains a set of melodic, impactful songs that really highlight what a great writer and singer he is. We were thrilled to catch up with him again at this year’s Long Road festival, deep in the heart of the middle of England.

It’s great to meet up and talk with you again Shy. I really enjoyed our London C2C chat and it’s clear that you enjoy coming over to the UK. What memories were you left with from your last visit?

I was left with many great memories of y’all over here appreciating the music, man, and being excited to hear it. You guys have got such a good energy and as long as that continues I’ll keep coming over here as much as I can.

Is there a perceptible difference between the European or British crowds and an American crowd? Lots of artists tell me that there is.

Yeah, I can tell the difference. It just seems like there is a little more excitement over here for the music because they don’t get access to Country music as much or as easy as people do in the states. The USA is the land of Country music, man, it’s all over the place and that’s great and people are excited to hear it in America too but it just feels like there’s just a little extra excitement here, maybe because there hasn’t been the history or the amount on offer before.

Tell me about your recent Opry performance. Did you enjoy yourself and more importantly, did your daughter, Gracie, enjoy herself? (Shy carried her around with him during one of his songs!)

Oh man! I had a beautiful time, I loved it. My daughter, she’s four, she’s hard to please, man! (laughing) She’s so sweet. She had a great time. I did my Opry debut and had a great time, went out into the audience and the whole place was singing ‘Hallelujah’ and having a great time, you know?

My daughter said, ‘You walking out into the audience and I was calling your name and you didn’t come to me!’ I didn’t know where she was sitting, I knew she was there but I was like, ‘This was my Opry debut, sweetie, I’m just trying to do my thing!’ (laughing) Then she said, ‘You didn’t come and I cried!’

I said this time, make sure I could see where she was sitting and once I saw her I picked her up and sang the rest of the song with her. I asked her if she had a good time, afterwards, and she said, ‘Yeah, but I thought you were going to come and get me on the next song too!’ (laughing) I can’t win, man!!!

Is she showing signs of being musical? It looks like she likes the spotlight!

She’s definitely showing signs, for sure. There’s a clip on my Instagram of me going live and singing to people and she was playing the piano whilst I was singing and she didn’t know what she was doing but it still sounded like something, I can tell she’s got a talent there.

When we spoke at C2C you told me there was a version of ‘Hard’ coming down the line that I would love. It came and I do!! What a lovely thing to do, the grand piano version of it.

That was special man. We broke it down and you can hear it being recorded live in the room with all the emotions flowing. It’s a song that I hope helps people when they are going through something and it helps them to think and process their emotions.

I recorded it out at the studio on my farm. That’s where my magic happens, it’s real nice out there and we’ve wrote a lot of good songs there.

When you write with Kane Brown does he come out there or do you go to him?

I usually go to him, man, he’s a busy guy! I might go out on the bus with him whilst he’s touring – you’ve got to catch him when you can because he’s always got something going on. I did some background vocals for his new album ‘Different Man’ but we didn’t write as much this time around. I sang on ‘Thank God’, which is the song Kane and his wife have done.

You have been writing with Tyler Hubbard recently, what was he like to work with?

He was amazing. Tyler is so cool, man, and we wrote a fire song!!! That’s probably going to be the one I put out next. I was blessed enough for it to be for me……

Did you know that in advance of meeting up, that the song was going to be for you?

Right! (laughing) I didn’t know for sure what we were going to do until I got there on the day and he was, like, ‘Bro, we are going to make a smash for you!’ (laughing)I was , like, ‘Heck, yeah, man!’ He knows what he’s doing man. He loves the music and he’s a skilled writer. I didn’t even know he’d written other songs, like ‘You Make It Easy’ for Jason Aldean. The guy’s just got hits all inside him!

Have you been writing with anyone else recently?

Yeah. I wrote with Lily Rose the other day, she’s off the chain. She’s great. I wrote with a guy called Cooper Alan who’s huge on YouTube, TikTok and Instagram. He’s building a real big following with his songs. He’s a wild guy and I wrote a good smash song with him, for him.

I’m still waiting for this duet with Caitlyn Smith that you teased at C2C to come out!

Maybe I’ll let you hear a little piece of it, man! (laughing) It’s gonna come out soon, we’ve recorded it, it sounds great, we’re just waiting for the right time.

If you had to boil down everything you’ve learned about songwriting over the years into a piece of advice for a new, budding songwriter, what would you tell them?

I would tell them to stay focused and stay motivated. Have patience, that’s really important, and never give up. If you write every day for as long as you can you’ll get better too. You have to take care of your body and your soul and your heart at the same time, though, because if you don’t do that your writing will suffer and you’ll burn out.

The business side of things can create a lot of BS, man, it can weigh you down and you have to make sure you take care of yourself.

I got the whole crowd singing along with me to "Hallelujah," which comes at the end of "God Whispered Your Name" – a song I co-wrote with my brother Micah that was recorded by Keith Urban . It truly was a moment I'll never forget.

Making Friends and Fans

I needed to get out into that audience and walk around such an iconic room. I was giving hugs, high-fives, and really soaking in all of the good energy. I felt like everyone was happy to share this special experience with me.

Will Beyoncé announce the 'Cowboy Carter' tour? Fans think she may be hitting the road again soon

  • Beyoncé released her new album "Cowboy Carter" on Friday.
  • Some fans think she's gearing up to tour again, though many say they don't have the funds to attend.
  • The Renaissance World Tour wrapped last October in Kansas City. It was hailed as a must-see event.

Insider Today

Less than a year after the Renaissance World Tour wrapped, it might already be time for the Beyhive to dust off their boots and head back out to see Beyoncé live again.

The Renaissance World Tour was hailed as a once-in-a-lifetime event , a bona fide status symbol , and a blockbuster concert movie that awed audiences while near-singlehandedly boosting AMC's revenue . The 56-show run wrapped on October 1, 2023, in Kansas City.

On its heels, Beyoncé has released her new album " Cowboy Carter ." The triumphant country-inspired project is billed as "Act II" in a three-part "Renaissance" series.

So it would stand to reason — financially and thematically — that Beyoncé would plan another tour leg for "Cowboy Carter."

Her team seemed to hint that something is coming by launching a new website, " Been Country ." The landing page shows a photo of young Beyoncé performing at the Texas Sweetheart Pageant, as well as a childhood photo of her mother, Tina Knowles-Lawson , and an image of a banjo.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Slayonce Avenue (@slayonce_avenue2)

A fan account on Instagram shared a rumor that the tour announcement is scheduled for Friday, exactly one week after the album's arrival. Knowles-Lawson liked the post, adding more fuel to the rumor's flame.

Beyoncé's longtime collaborator The-Dream, who produced 10 of the new album's 27 tracks, also alluded to a forthcoming tour. He celebrated the release of "Cowboy Carter" on X, writing, "This tour bout to B' Incredible!"

Fans grabbed screenshots of The-Dream's post, though it has since been deleted.

However, the six-month turnaround since Beyoncé's last concert does cast suspicion on these theories. Thanks to "Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé," we know the Renaissance World Tour took four years to ideate and execute.

It's unclear if plans for a "Cowboy Carter" show were also in the works during that time, but if not, fans may have to wait a bit longer to watch Beyoncé perform. As she's already made clear, " A queen moves at her own pace ."

Even so, a delay may come as welcome news, even for dedicated members of the Beyhive.

Many fans have been posting about their lack of ticket funds on X, playfully begging Beyoncé to put off touring until next year.

Description

Highlights:.

  • Experience medieval Kitay Gorod (China town).
  • Wander picturesque Red Square and Alexander Garden.
  • Explore grand Christ the Savior Cathedral on our Red Square tour.
  • Breathtaking panoramic views from Patriarch bridge.
  • Enjoy a hearty lunch on the large open verandah and marvel at the stunning views of the Kremlin.
  • Learn about Russian culture from the local through relaxed cultural discussions.

Tour Itinerary:

Red square:.

Russia and Moscow are synonymous with Red Square and the Kremlin and that's hardly surprising as you'll find these places absolutely stunning!

  • - Walk-through the Resurrection Gate and don’t forget to flip a coin so you’ll be sure to come back one day!
  • - Visit the world's famous Kazan Cathedral .
  • - See the State Department Store (GUM), once the Upper Trading Stalls, which were built over a century ago and still operating!
  • - Admire the lovely St. Basil's Cathedral! The French diplomat Marquis de Custine commented that it combined "the scales of a golden fish, the enamelled skin of a serpent, the changeful hues of the lizard, the glossy rose and azure of the pigeon's neck" and wondered at "the men who go to worship God in this box of confectionery work".
  • - Walk by Lobnoye Mesto (literally meaning "Execution Place", or "Place of Skulls"), once Ivan the Terrible's stage for religious ceremonies, speeches, and important events.
  • - Entering the Alexander Garden , you’ll take in spectacular views of Russian architecture from ancient to Soviet times, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame. Watch Changing of the Guard Ceremony every hour in summer and every half an hour in winter.

Kitai-gorod:

Stroll along medieval Kitai-gorod with its strong ancient Russia feel, known for its bohemian lifestyle, markets and arts.

  • - Nikolskaya Street. Here you will find the Russia's first publishing house, the second oldest monastery, and Ferryn Pharmacy, known as the number one pharmacy back in Soviet times and famous for its Empire-style architecture.
  • - Ilinka Street. The financial street of the Kitaigorod (China Town) district, where you’ll find the Gostiny Dvor (Merchant’s Yard), which is now a showroom for Ferraris and Maseratis. The street was designed in the 1790s by Catherine the Great.
  • - Varvarka street. The oldest street in Moscow, which dates back to the 14th century, and still has remnants of early Muscovite architecture, such as the Old English Court and the Palace of the Romanov’s.
  • - Kamergersky Lane. Only a small road of about 250 meters, it is home to some of the oldest artifacts of the city, as each building holds a fascinating story. Some of Russia's most famous writers, poets, and composers from as far back as the Golden Age of Russian culture, have lived or worked on this lane.

Historic City Center

Walk the historical old center of Moscow with its cool local vibe, including the main Tverskaya street , and indulge in desserts in the first grocery “Eliseev's store” , housed in an 18th century neoclassical building, famous for its baroque interior and decoration.

From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:

At 3:30, as energy flagged, lunch was on the agenda at a Ukrainian restaurant.  Just in time!  We asked our guide to order for us.  We all had the same thing....borscht (the Ukrainian version has beans and more tomatoes than the Russian version, which has more beets and includes beef).

The special high bread served is called galushki.  Our main course was golubtsy...a dish of minced meat rolled in braised cabbage leaves.  Both dishes called for optional sour cream as a topping....of course, yes, please....I recommend it.

Full, satisfied, and completely refreshed, it was off to Red Square and St. Basil's and GUM department store.  Red Square is not so named because of the color of the brick walls of the Kremlin.  Rather the word for 'red' and the word for 'beautiful' are similar in pronunciation....and, there you have it.

As we made the turn by the National Museum in front of which is the mounted sculpture of the "Marshall of Victory," Giorgy Zhukov from WWII and caught our first view of St. Basil's, my friend and I simultaneously emitted "Oooohhhhh!"  There it was....the iconic onion domes of St. Basil's!  Hooray....it was open until 7....we had about 30 minutes and were allowed in, AND we could take photos with no flash.

Now, I can give you a taste of what we saw in the other cathedrals in Cathedral Square.  What we learned is that St. Vasily and St. Basil are one in the same....Russian/English.  He was a common man who wandered Moscow unclothed and barefoot.  But, all, even Ivan the Terrible, heeded his opinions derived from his visions.  Ivan had this cathedral built over his tomb.

As we exited and took photos up close of the onion domes, Inna presented us with chocolate (how did she know we were ready for another energy boost, and we each got a big piece of chocolate.  The baby's name pictured on the wrapper of this famous Russian chocolate is Alyonka....the Russian Gerber baby, don't you think?

One could wear out the credit card in GUM's (capitalized because it is actually a government abbreviation), but the 'kitty' and my credit card stayed in my pocket as we strolled through the glass-topped arcade.

We then strolled through some of Moscow's lovely pedestrian streets; paused to listen as a wonderful quartet performed Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in an underground passage to cross the busy street (hooray!....we DID have our 'classical concert' experience after all; a request Alina tried in vain to fill because none was scheduled those days), saw the Bolshoi, which means 'big' (my friend has yet to recover that their performance schedule did not coincide with our cruise), saw the Central Telegraph Building, dating from the 1930's, and made our way to the Ritz-Carlton to see the night view of Moscow from the rooftop bar, called O2.

There were fleece blankets to wrap yourself in....yes, it got that cold when the sun set.  We each ordered something hot to drink...the ginger, mint, lemon tea served to me in a parfait glass (for 600 rubles...about $9....you pay for the view here!) was delightful and hit the spot perfectly.  It was time to call it a night....

‘The Long Game’ Review: Young Latinos Aim to Earn Respect and Victory on the Golf Course in Uplifting Period Drama

Jay Hernandez and Dennis Quaid head the cast of an earnest, fact-based indie about the improbable achievements of underdogs in 1950s Texas.

The Long Game

Winner of an audience award at the 2023 SXSW film fest, “ The Long Game ” is an utterly predictable yet thoroughly engaging period drama. Set in 1950s Texas, the film focuses on the true-life story of five Mexican-American youths who triumph against all odds while overcoming adversity, prejudice and periodic self-doubts in their pursuit of a Texas State High School Golf Championship trophy.

Popular on Variety

But when JB notices that the five caddies have developed a talent for the game while competing at a one-hole course they’ve improvised for themselves on an unattended stretch of public land, he figures that, hey, maybe what San Filipe High really needs is a student golf team, the San Felipe Mustangs. And he should be their coach — with a little help from Frank.

But he and his fine cast infuse even the hokiest moments in “The Long Game” with a disarming sincerity, so that, while there’s never any serious doubt about what will happen when the qualifying series of golf tournaments concludes for the Mustangs, the young underdogs — and their grown-up allies — consistently generate rooting interest on and off the fairway.

Quintana, who started his career by working with Terrence Malick on “The Tree of Life” and “To the Wonder,” gets splendid work from DP Alex Quintana, his brother, and production designer Carlos Osorio, both of whom greatly enhance the film’s period flavor (which is strong enough to withstand a few minor intrusive anachronisms).

Julian Works is the standout among the Mustangs, to a large degree because his character is the only one of the youths who has more than two dimensions. (The other Latino teens are equally well-cast, but they are given much less to do.) To that end, it helps that Works’ Joe has scenes where he interacts with an angrily disapproving father (Jimmy Gonzalez), and romances a lovely classmate (a beguiling Paulina Chávez) with literary ambitions.

Hernandez is low-key and credible as JB develops mentor-pupil relationships with the Mustangs, and maintains a loving and supportive rapport with his wife Lucy (Jaina Lee Ortiz). Quaid strikes the perfect balance of twinkly-eyed mischievousness and grizzled seriousness, with a side order of wartime trauma, while Marin skillfully offsets his welcome comic relief as Pollo notes that, if you’re not white, fighting for your country does not guarantee acceptance in a segregated postwar society. Maybe you’ll have to win a few golf tournaments first.
