Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

The Beauty of Waimea Canyon: A Jewel of Kauai

Ever wonder what makes Waimea Canyon so special? Well, folks call it “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” and that’s a big clue!

Just like the famous Grand Canyon, Waimea Canyon shows off layers upon layers of Earth’s history. These layers tell tales of ancient times, shaping the gorgeous cliffs and valleys we see today.

Waimea Canyon Kauai island Hawaii

But there’s something else that’s amazing. Instead of just lava rock and cliffs, beautiful Waimea Canyon is bursting with green! Lush plants, native Hawaiian flora, tall trees, and colorful flowers decorate its deep valleys.

This mix of rocky wonders and green beauty makes it a super important part of Kauai’s natural landscape.

When you stand at the edge and look out over the canyon, it’s like seeing a painting come to life. It’s a must-visit spot for anyone coming to Kauai.

So, ready to explore this masterpiece of nature in Hawaii?

Self-Guided vs. Organized Tours: Which Way to Explore?

Thinking about how to see Waimea Canyon? Let’s weigh our options!

Self-Guided Tours

This is like a solo adventure! You explore on your own terms, deciding where to go and how long to stay. It’s great if you want freedom and have done your homework about the place.

Pros: Make your own schedule. Drive your own car. Feel more adventurous!

Cons: Might miss out on hidden gems. No expert to answer questions.

Organized Sightseeing Tours

Here, you’ll join a group led by an expert guide. They know all the cool spots and stories!

Pros: Learn fun facts and history. See the best places without missing out.

Cons: Fixed schedule. Might be with a group, which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

In the end, both choices have their perks. Want to explore freely? Go self-guided! Love learning new stuff? An organized tour might be your pick!

Although Waimea Canyon is nothing compared to the Grand Canyon in size, you have to admit – it’s still breathtaking. The Waimea Canyon trail offers gigantic and unbelievable views on such a tiny island. Self-guided driving tours with stops and lookouts make for a relaxing sightseeing day. Even paid tours for Waimea Canyon are well worth it because it’s impossible to discover all of it in just a single lifetime.

Waimea Canyon activities are generally free, which is great news for the majority of us (including me). However, if you find yourself with a lingering sense to learn more about the Waimea Canyon, go for the paid tour!

A Little Intro To Kauai’s Big Canyon

If you’re on Kauai, two things have got to be on your Kauai must do list: the Na Pali coast and the Waimea Canyon. While the Na Pali coast’s untamed cliffs will get your heart pumping, the Waimea Canyon with her ancient layers of time will give you chicken skin. In fact, Kauai has lava flow dating back to 5 million years ago, making Kauai the oldest island of Hawaii’s main islands.

Cool Fact: Waimea Canyon’s nickname is the Grand Canyon of the Pacific!

waimea canyon tour app

The Waimea Canyon Trail

The Waimea Canyon trail (aka “Canyon trail”) is one of the most popular hikes to explore the Waimea Canyon. The trail takes you toward Waipoo falls, but you’ll pass several smaller waterfalls on the way if it’s been raining recently. While you won’t be able to reach the base of Waipoo falls, you’ll still get to see it at a closer distance. Plus, the views you’ll get on the Waimea Canyon trail are so much different than the view at the top so it’s certainly worth it.

Be prepared for the Waimea Canyon trail to go up and down, have plenty of tree roots, and some rather steep inclines. Be careful of rainy days where these ups and downs will have an effect on your traction and may cause you to slip and lose your footing. The best time to hike any Waimea Canyon trail is after a few sunny days to allow the rain to evaporate and dry out from the ground.

Another reason why the Waimea Canyon trail is a great choice is that kids love it! The challenges this hike provides really gets the blood pumping and it’s a completely different experience than Kauai’s numerous rainforest hikes. Plus, the added benefit of a waterfall, swimming pool (the smaller waterfalls are accessible) and potential mud seems to always be an incentive for kids.

Recommended Waimea Canyon Trail – Cliff Trail

Another way you can access the Waimea Canyon trail is via the Cliff trail. Park your car on the side of the road between mile markers 14 and 15 and walk down the dirt path until you get to a fork in the road. The way to the Cliff viewpoint is quick and easy and gorgeous. From there, you can easily backtrack to the fork and begin the Waimea Canyon trail.

Waimea Canyon Drives And Lookouts

Like the Waimea Canyon trail, driving along the canyon is free and fun. If you choose to view Waimea Canyon by car, there are  several lookouts along Kokee Road (Highway 550) that you can stop at but here are the more popular and well-maintained ones. What’s probably the most popular lookout is the Waimea Canyon Lookout, which is just past the 10 mile marker. There’s a large parking lot and viewing area so you really can’t miss it. Because of its popularity, you’ll probably get a lot of other people in your photos, which is not always bad since they’ll provide a comparison to the vastness of Waimea Canyon.

  • Waimea Canyon Lookout, just past the 10 mile marker. Probably the most popular lookout. There’s a large parking lot and viewing area so you really can’t miss it. Because of its popularity, you’ll probably get a lot of other people in your photos, which is not always bad since they’ll provide a comparison to the vastness of Waimea Canyon.
  • Puu Hinahina lookout at the 13 mile marker. The view you’ll get here is considerably different as you’ll be seeing the canyon from a curve. While the lookout itself is smaller than the Waimea Canyon Lookout, I still highly recommend Puu Hinahina lookout as the canyon will run perpendicular to you. There is also a small platform where you’ll be able to see Niihau island on a clear day.
  • At the 18 mile marker, you’ll come across Kalalau Lookout where you can view the famous Kalalau Valley that opens out to the Pacific Ocean and the Na Pali Coast. But, the best view that you’ll get of Kalalau Valley is at Puu O Kila Lookout about a mile later, and this one is a winner! Not only can you view the valley at a higher elevation, but there is also a ridge that you can walk around on to get different views and there is also Pihea Trail that you can hike from here as well.

Waimea Canyon Tours

  • The great thing about Kauai is that you get a huge bang for your buck on a helicopter tour . Na Pali and Waimea Canyon are both very famous and should certainly be experienced as much as possible. The helicopter ride will allow you to not only see an aerial view, but also discover beautiful gems such as hidden waterfalls and hard-to-see landmarks.
  • A bike tour downhill from Poipu is a wonderful way to explore the Waimea Canyon. You can enjoy the scenery outside throughout the length of the canyon. Plus, your guide will tell you all about the history and fun facts of the Waimea Canyon and the island itself.
  • There are also a bunch of Waimea Canyon  package tours  that you can try out. If you’re interested in waterfall swims, luaus, river cruises, jeep runs or in-depth hiking tours, this may be something for you to check out.

The waterfalls on this trail are truly spectacular, and although smaller in size than the Grand Canyon as you said it looks much greener (which I love). Thanks for sharing this valuable information, I hope to be able to visit Hawaii one day 🙂

Aloha Lenise! Ah, that’s true, now that I think about it. I was lucky enough to visit the Grand Canyon a couple of years back and the Waimea Canyon is certainly greener! Nice observation.

Efficiency is key

There is way too much to do, and far too much to see to be able to fully capture the grandeur and awe that is Kauai. That being said, the key to fully appreciating every precious minute of your vacation is to be efficient with the time you do spend in your travels. This app ensures that you get the best views overlooking the canyons and beaches, takes you off the beaten paths to the special, hidden places reserved just for locals and those "in the know," and avoids wasting the costly minutes or even hours spent looking in vain for parking, dining, gas/fuel and restrooms. The stories along the way are very informative, entertaining and funny (albeit somewhat corny at times). These tours are a perfect beginning / starting place for those visiting for the first time, and there's plenty of info to keep you engaged and entertained even if you're a regular. Perfect for those looking for a "locals' opinion" on where to go and what to do; but still wanting a personalized tour that you can go and do at your own pace, and take as little or as much time as you'd like. There's even background music to set the Hawaiian mood. Just be sure to download the entire tour over wifi before you leave the hotel. And bring a car charger, and an audio cable to plug into the stereo. But most of all, remember to have fun!

Excellent help for "self-guided" island tour!

Oddly enough I first found the Shaka Kauai tour information thru a desperate google search rather than the App Store, but when I found an iPhone app was available for this guide... sold! Yes it is probably one of the most expensive iPhone apps any user will buy, but considering that you could have easily spent $100+/pp on a bus tour instead, this app is well worth its value. Like advertised, it worked magnificently to automatically start audio at your route points ... even in a rare spot where no cell reception could be obtained! One note to the user - heed the author's advice in tour time length suggestions. The "side trips" for photo ops or hiking trails may be easily overlooked to think you could. Breeze through both Kauai tours in the same day, but as I quickly found out when you stop worrying about the map and where you have to go next and think about the fun of the day's tour, time flies really fast!!! All said, I'm very impressed with this tour guide app and fully plan to purchase the Maui version for the final leg of my vacation tomorrow!

Developer Response ,

Mahalo for your review! Don't forget to tell all your friends about it and follow us on social media @shakaguide to share your Shaka Guide experience 🤙😍🤙

Best part of our trip so far!

We’ve been on the Kauai for 3 days - and unfortunately have had a lot of rain! Not the kind of weather to sit by the pool or beach and relax... so we decide to get out and explore. I googled Kauai driving map and stumbled on this app and decided to check it out. We figured it was worth trying to go to another area of the island looking for some sun - and if no sun was to be found at least we were out seeing something new! What a great decision. We’ve now done all 3 Kauai tours and it’s been the best part of our vacation. The tours are fun, informative, and include great little stops that we would have never found had we not taken the tour. Tours are easy to follow with great and detailed spoken instructions. Even little tips like ‘pull over here and look for someplace to park - because if you go farther down the road it’s difficult to turn around.’ The tour guide is funny and engaging - sharing a great amount of history and interesting anecdotes as you follow the route. I highly recommend investing the minimal cost to purchase the tours - all 3 have been great!!
Mahalo! We are so pleased that you had such a great time! More tours coming soon!

Know Before You Go, Shaka Guide's Waimea and Na Pali Driving Tour

June 28, 2023

Shaka Guide

Start Planning!

You’re about to go on an awesome adventure to Waimea Canyon, the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, as well as the Na Pali coast overlook.

But first, there are a few things you should know about the tour before you get started.

  • The tour begins just past Lawai outside of Poipu and goes all the way to Kalalau Lookout. Don’t worry, we will guide you back to Lawai the same way you came.
  • Parking at Waimea Canyon is $10 for non-residents and free for Hawaii residents.
  • In addition to a parking fee, each non-resident visitor must pay a $5 entrance fee per person.
  • Fees can be paid with credit card at any of the parking lot kiosks and are valid for both parks.
  • The only food stop in Koke’e State Park is Koke’e Lodge; otherwise, you’ll find options in Waimea Town and Hanapepe.

download shaka guide

What to Expect

To get an early start.

We recommend starting the tour before 9:00 a.m. We know it’s early, but this will give you plenty of time to get in all the hikes you’d like to explore in the park.

To Spend 6-8 Hours Exploring

This tour has a total of 19 stops. Not only will you explore the scenic viewpoints and hikes within Waimea Canyon State Park, you’ll also visit a local coffee farm, Waimea Town for some delicious eats, the quaint little town of Hanapepe and two swinging bridges!

To Be Active

You’ll visit a total of three hikes on today’s tour: Iliau Nature Loop, Canyon Trail, and Pihea Trail. Each is completely different.

The first is a short walk surrounded by local flora and fauna, the second takes you to a canyon lookout and to the top of a waterfall, and the third will reveal breathtaking views of the Na Pali Coastline.

waimea and na pali tour map

To Try Local Food

This tour doesn’t have many food stops, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to try some great local grinds like shave ice from JoJo’s.

Just plan on the food stops on the way back after you’ve worked up an appetite!

This tour is really special because it takes you away from the beaches into one of the most unique terrains in Hawaii.

Now, don’t get us wrong, we love Kauai’s beaches, but this tour is for adventurers who want to explore another side of the islands.

Along the way you’ll learn about the region and its legends, ancient mythical people that once inhabited the land, and some of the native plants and animals that are unique to Hawaii.

How much you spend truly depends on what you do along the tour route, but here’s a breakdown of some costs:

  • $10 per vehicle: Parking at Waimea Canyon State Park and Koke'e State Park
  • $5 per person: Admission fee valid for both parks
  • $15.00 per person: Lunch
  • $5.00 per person: Local snack, like shave ice or Kauai Coffee

Start Packing!

Here’s our packing list for this tour. It may seem a little long, but remember, what you bring depends on the activities you choose to do for the day.

  • Sneakers
  • Hiking Shoes (Pack a plastic bag for your shoes in case the trail is muddy)
  • Hiking Clothes
  • Water Bottle
  • Bug Spray
  • Sunscreen
  • Sun Glasses and/or Hat
  • Snacks
  • Cash/Credit Card

Malama 'Aina

In Hawaiian the word malama means “to take care” and the word aina means “land.”

When you’re in Hawaii, we ask that you practice this and pick up your trash; respect the marine life, plants, and animals; and avoid spots that are unsafe.

Hawaii’s natural resources are precious, it’s up to all of us to help preserve these resources for generations by respecting the aina when you visit.

We hope that we’ve given you all the information you need to make the most of your day. Your vacation is extremely important to us so if you have any questions feel free to reach out at [email protected].

Shaka Guide recognizes the use of diacritics in the Hawaiian language including the okina or glottal stop and the kahako or macron. In some instances, these have been omitted on our site to ensure the best online experience for our users since not all online platforms recognize these marks. We understand the importance of these diacritics to preserve the language and culture of Hawaii.
