Verizon's TravelPass Lets You Roam Internationally for $10 per Day

Zach Honig

If you're a frequent reader of this site, chances are you've managed to take an international trip or two. And you probably stressed about staying connected before, during or after your overseas adventure — perhaps all three, if you came back to a hefty bill. US cell service providers have infamously price gouged travelers for years, but with T-Mobile's free data roaming and services like Google's Project Fi (which I love), the carriers have had to make some adjustments in order to hold on to customers.

This week, that means good news for Verizon subscribers. Verizon Wireless (TPG's carrier of choice) just announced its TravelPass program , allowing roaming customers to utilize the same voice, text and data allowance they have access to back home. That sounds a lot like T-Mobile's free global roaming plan, until you dig a bit deeper.

Using Google's Project Fi to stay connected in Bali.

Unlike T-Mobile's offering, which is free (but with data capped at a paltry 128 Kbps), Verizon's TravelPass requires a daily payment. Still, it's bound to save certain travelers a small fortune — especially those who like to use their phones abroad just as they do when they're back home. TravelPass will cost $2 per 24-hour period when roaming in Canada or Mexico, or $10 for each 24 hours when you use your device in the countries below:

Caribbean and Central and South America: Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, Barbados, Bonaire, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Curacao, Dominica, French Guiana, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, Montserrat, Netherlands Antilles, Saint Barthelemy, Saint Eustatius & Saba, Saint Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Maartin/Saint Martin, Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks & Caicos. Europe and Middle East: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guernsey, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Isle of Mann, Israel, Italy, Jersey, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Madeira and Azores, Netherlands, Norway, Palestinian Territories, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Vatican City. Asia Pacific: Australia, Singapore, Taiwan.

You do need to activate the service on Verizon's website before you travel, but once you do, you'll only be charged for days that you use your phone. To activate each day, simply make or receive a call, use data or send a text. TravelPass sits dormant on your account when you're not using it, so after you set it up the first time you can leave it be.

You'll still need to be careful, though — If you travel to countries that aren't listed above (but are still covered in the 140+ countries Verizon includes), you'll need to sign up for a Preferred Pricing Plan, in which case you'll be charged $25 for every 100MB of data you use. Though that sure beats Verizon's Pay-as-You-Go pricing , which will run you $2.05 per megabyte (or $205 per 100MB). Ouch!! • Call Verizon Customer Service or visit their website to activate the Travel Pass feature on your account. This can usually be done up to one day before your departure.
  • Ensure that your device is compatible with the Travel Pass feature. Most Verizon devices are eligible, but it’s always best to double-check to avoid any surprises.
  • While abroad, your device will automatically connect to a partner network. You can monitor your usage by dialing #225 from your Verizon phone or by accessing the My Verizon app.

Things You Should Know: Insider Tips for a Hassle-Free Experience

Before embarking on your travels, keep these vital pieces of information in mind to ensure a smooth experience with Verizon Travel Pass:

  • Check for Travel Pass availability in your destination country: While Verizon covers an extensive range of countries, there may be some exceptions. Verify the availability of a Travel Pass in your desired location to avoid any inconveniences.
  • Understand the per-day roaming rates: Travel Pass allows you to use your existing plan’s talk, text, and data allowances for a fixed daily fee. Familiarize yourself with the charges applicable in your destination to manage your usage accordingly.
  • Consider the duration of your trip: If you are planning an extended stay abroad, Travel Pass may not be the most cost-effective option. In such cases, exploring international plan options with Verizon might be a better fit for your needs.

Tips and Tricks: Making the Most of Your Verizon Travel Pass

Excited to optimize your Verizon Travel Pass experience? Check out these handy tips:

  • Connect to available Wi-Fi networks: To limit your data usage, take advantage of Wi-Fi networks whenever possible. Most hotels, cafes, and tourist spots offer free or affordable Wi-Fi access, allowing you to stay connected without incurring additional charges.
  • Turn off data roaming for non-essential apps: Some apps consume significant amounts of data in the background. Disable data roaming for apps that you do not need during your travels to conserve your data allowance.
  • Use Wi-Fi calling and messaging apps: Avoid international call and text charges by utilizing Wi-Fi calling and messaging apps like WhatsApp, Skype, or FaceTime. These apps utilize your data allowance rather than your plan’s talk and text allowances.
  • Download offline maps and translation apps: Prepare for any unforeseen circumstances by downloading offline maps and translation apps before your trip. This ensures you can navigate unfamiliar territories without relying on data or incurring additional charges.
  • Consider a portable Wi-Fi device: If you anticipate heavy data usage or are traveling in a group, renting or purchasing a portable Wi-Fi device can be a cost-effective solution. These devices allow you to connect multiple devices simultaneously and avoid potential overage charges.

How To: Troubleshooting Common Issues

Encountering any hiccups along the way? Here are some handy troubleshooting steps to resolve common issues with Verizon Travel Pass:

  • If your device doesn’t connect to a partner network automatically, manually select a network from your device settings.
  • If you face issues with call or text functionality, try restarting your device, enabling airplane mode for a few seconds, and then disabling it again.
  • If you require assistance while abroad, reach out to Verizon’s customer service, who can guide you through any difficulties you may encounter during your travels.

Things To Do

The revamped Carnival Glory went through a 21-day refurbishment ahead of its arrival to Port Canaveral. (Courtesy/Carnival Cruise Line)

Carnival Cruise Line has revamped its Carnival Glory cruise ship with new features before it heads to its new home at Port Canaveral.

The 110,000-gross-ton ship is taking on three- and four-night Bahamas sailings from the port, joining three other Carnival ships. Built in 2003, the ship has a 2,980-guest passenger capacity based on double occupancy.

It recently came out of a 21-day dry dock at the Navantia shipyard in Cadiz, Spain, receiving some enhancements found on other Carnival ships.

Carnival Glory was given a version of the Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge during its 2024 dry dock. (Courtesy/Carnival Cruise Line)

Changes include a new casino layout, including a nonsmoking area, and a Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge that pays deference to military veterans and active-duty service members, taking over the SkyBox Sports Bar. Also added were a Dreams Photography Studio and upgrades within the spa.

When it debuted more than 20 years ago, Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, was named its godmother. Its space-themed pedigree extends to enhancements added to the youth area Camp Ocean, which now has a large video wall for its Space Cruisers program. Its curriculum was developed in partnership with Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Also updated is the video arcade and redubbed The Warehouse.

The refurb also removed the aft-pool Sky Dome, while the ship received routine hotel maintenance, cosmetic enhancements, ADA compliant updates in public areas and select staterooms including the addition of Ambulatory Accessible staterooms.

Stateroom balconies were also redone with new windows and doors and every stateroom had new LED lighting and bathroom nightlights added.

The ship sailed out of Barcelona on Thursday for a 14-night transatlantic voyage to Port Canaveral.

Its first sailing from Florida will be May 2. It joins Carnival Freedom, Carnival Vista and Carnival’s Mardi Gras calling the Orlando-area port home.

Leaving is Carnival Liberty, which is moving to New Orleans.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story said Carnival Glory received an updated hull paint scheme during the 2024 dry dock. It had its hull paint scheme updated in 2021.

Middle East latest: Six children killed in Israeli airstrike in Rafah, hospital says; Iraq military base explosion was 'attack'

Six children are reportedly among those killed in an Israeli airstrike in the southern Gazan city of Rafah overnight. Meanwhile, one member of an Iran-backed group was killed after a large explosion at a military base in Iraq, which has been described as an "attack".

The US House of Representatives has approved a $26bn package aiding Israel and providing humanitarian relief to people in Gaza.

The package will now go to the US Senate, where it is likely to be passed on Tuesday.

Congress has also approved sending $60.8bn in foreign aid to Ukraine.

People have been attending a protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government in Tel Aviv today.

Protesters are also calling for the release of hostages kidnapped in the 7 October Hamas attack on Israel.

By Alex Rossi , international correspondent in Tel Aviv

On Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest, people took to the beach in Tel Aviv. Under the hot spring sunshine, the tensions between Iran and Israel seemed a world away.

Most of the people there are hoping that the worst of this phase of the crisis has passed.

As he rested on the sand between surfs, Jonathan Weiss told me: "I definitely hope this direct bit is over. We have enough things to worry about - internally and with our direct borders.

"Lebanon, Hamas, Gaza…we don't want to add anything to that."

Lior Shalev agreed: "I hope everything will be over soon. It's just unnecessary for both sides to get people hurt."

Israel's government has remained officially silent on the attack on a base near the Iranian city of Isfahan. It is another indication that the situation is de-escalating.

The strike appears to have been limited; symbolic in nature to send a warning rather than ignite a bigger confrontation.

But whilst the latest flare-up in the wider Middle East appears to have died down for now, Israel is still locked in conflict closer to home.

The indication is that Israel's long-anticipated incursion into the southern city of Rafah - which Israel sees as the last stronghold for Hamas - may not be far away.

US officials met their Israeli counterparts virtually this week to discuss the imminent incursion.

The White House has consistently warned the Israelis against a wholesale ground offensive of the city, fearing that an indiscriminate approach could lead to yet more huge civilian casualties.

But as we saw this week, Israel will make its own decisions on matters of war.

After Israel repelled a mass Iranian drone and missile attack, President Biden initially advised Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to "take the win" and not strike back.

Within days, the US realised Mr Netanyahu was going to strike anyway - albeit in a limited fashion.

Further to reports we brought you earlier on the meeting between Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh (see post at 3.08pm) we can bring you more on this.

It was the first meeting between the two since Israel began its operation in Gaza.

The Turkish presidency said in a statement: "Issues related to Israel's attacks on lands of Palestine, particularly Gaza, efforts for adequate and uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, and a fair and lasting peace process in the region were discussed."

Mr Erdogan also "stressed that Israel should not benefit from the developments (between Iran and Israel) and that it is important to make efforts that will draw attention to Gaza again", the statement added.

NATO member Turkey has denounced Israel's offensive in Gaza following Hamas' attack on Israel and called for an immediate ceasefire.

Mr Erdogan has called Hamas a "liberation movement" while slamming the West for what he calls its unconditional support of Israel.

The Republican-controlled US House of Representatives is set to vote on, and expected to pass, a $95bn package providing security assistance to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan today.

Before the voting, the House began a sombre but serious debate with an unusual sense of purpose as Republican committee chairs and top Democrats on the panels united to urge swift passage that would ensure the US supports its allies and remains a leader on the world stage.

"The eyes of the world are upon us, and history will judge what we do here and now," said Michael McCaul, chairman of the House foreign affairs committee.

The weekend scene presented a striking display of congressional action after months of stalemate fuelled by Republicans, who hold the majority but are deeply split over foreign aid, particularly for Ukraine.

Speaker Mike Johnson is relying on Democratic support to ensure the military and humanitarian package is approved, and help flows to the US allies.

There will be a series of votes on three aid bills, for Ukraine, Israel and the Indo-Pacific, as well as a fourth that contains several other foreign policy proposals, including a clampdown on the social media platform TikTok.

If the votes are successful, the package will go to the Senate, where passage in the coming days is nearly assured.

President Joe Biden has promised to sign it immediately.

Passage through the House would clear away the biggest hurdle to Mr Biden's funding request, first made in October as Ukraine's military supplies began to run low.

By military analyst Sean Bell

The dust appears to be settling on the latest round of tit for tat exchanges in the Iran-Israel conflict with the risk of a regional escalation abating.

However, with both sides apparently reluctant to discuss what actually happened in the early hours of Friday morning, what impact did the Israeli military action have, and was it decisive?

Iran takes every opportunity to showcase its broad array of military equipment - whether it be tanks, missiles or fighter jets.

One of Iran's strategic priorities is to protect its nuclear programme which most military analysts believe is only a matter of weeks away from being able to develop a nuclear weapon.

Iran's military bases and specifically its nuclear development sites are protected by a complex array of layered military capability, with the outer layer including surface-to-air missile systems capable of striking targets out to 200km.

At face value these defensive capabilities appear very robust, and form the basis or Iranian military deterrence capability.

However, long-range missiles are not the only component of a credible military capability.

The first priority is to detect a target, and that requires a long-range radar.

The F-35 joint strike fighter - a central pillar of Israel's air power capability - is not invisible to radar, but does present a much smaller profile than a conventional aircraft.  That means that the F-35 can get much closer to the Iranian radar before being detected which reduces the time available for the missile operators to enable a targeting solution.

Once the Iranian air defence missile has been locked onto the F-35, the Iranian radar continuously tracks the fighter to enable the missile to be launched en-route to its target.

However, at this point the F-35 uses its electronic warfare capability to confuse the radar.

Building on decades of hi-tech radar techniques developed during the Cold War and since, modern electronic warfare techniques can deceive enemy radars to create a false target - some way away from the F-35.

As the Iranian anti-aircraft missile is racing towards this "shadow", the Iranian radar is providing continuous guidance and updates to the missile system.  This makes the radar vulnerable to Israeli anti-radiation missiles, which can target the radar in a passive detection mode.

The West has developed a raft of hi-tech electronic capabilities to "roll back" enemy air defence systems to enable fighter jets or missiles to target high-value targets.

Although Israel will not have had access to the very latest iteration of this decisive military capability, they will have been able to punch large holes in Iran's comprehensive but aging air defence systems.

In short, Israel would have demonstrated that despite Iran's layered military capability, all Iran's key military targets are vulnerable and within Israel's reach.

Israel has no need to advertise that message to the international community - the target audience was Iran's political leaders who were delivered a clear demonstration of Israel's military dominance.

It was little surprise therefore that Iran has sought to downplay Israel's most recent strikes, as behind the bluster of public statements Iran had been reminded of the potential repercussions should it ever consider repeating its unprecedented attack on Israel.

Satellite images following Iran's drone attack on Israel last week show repairs on a damaged Israeli desert air base.

The overall damage done to Nevatim air base in southern Israel was minor despite Iran launching hundreds of drones, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles.

Israeli air defences and fighter jets, backed by the US, the UK and neighbouring Jordan, shot down the vast majority of the incoming fire.

The satellite images were analysed by The Associated Press.

Mourners in Poland have gathered for the funeral of Damian Sobol, one of the seven aid workers for the World Central Kitchen killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza earlier this month.

Dariusz Dudek, an adviser for Polish President Andrzej Duda, attended to pay his respects for the aid worker described as "pure joy" by the WCK.

"We're saying farewell to a wonderful young man, courageous and generous activist, who followed the idea of solidarity," he said, reading a letter written by the president.

"A man who couldn't ignore the fate of those who suffer, those in need… I'd like to honour the sacrifice he made to help civilians affected by the war in Gaza."

Mr Sobol, 35, had previously worked in Greece following wildfires and in Turkey after the earthquakes there.

On "day one" of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the WCK says he volunteered to help refugees arriving in his native country.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has met Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh for talks in Istanbul today.

During the meeting, the pair discussed efforts to reach a ceasefire and deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, state broadcaster TRT says.

The meeting took place at the Dolmabahce Palace.

The Palestinian health ministry reported earlier on an Israeli raid in the occupied West Bank (see post at 12.10pm).

The raid, which began on Friday, took place in the Nur Shams area of Tulkarm

Now, the IDF has said its forces killed 10 militants in the camp and the surrounding areas since it began its raid.

In a statement, it said the Israel army and the country's border police arrested eight Palestinian suspects from the area.

Nine of its officers and soldiers have been injured during the ongoing raid, it said.

According to the Palestinian health ministry, only four Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in camp since Friday.

The two day raid appears to be one of the largest that has taken place at Tulkarem's refugee camp since the Israel-Hamas war began.

Patriots' Day 2024: The Revolutionary War holiday is about more than the Boston Marathon

travel pass day

Patriots' Day is Monday and people in New England and beyond are set to commemorate the start of the American Revolution.

The third Monday in April recognizes the battles of Lexington and Concord as well as the aftermath of the " shot heard 'round the world ." The day is celebrated with historical reenactments , sporting events and parades.

The holiday was created to diffuse a rivalry between the cities of Lexington and Concord who had dueling celebrations to mark the beginning of the American Revolution.

The holiday was originally observed on April 19, the anniversary of the battles of Lexington and Concord, but was moved to the third Monday in 1969.

While the holiday is most associated with Massachusetts, it is celebrated in five other states including New England neighbors Connecticut and Maine.

Here's what to know about Patriots' Day.

When did Patriots' Day become a holiday?

Patriots' Day was first celebrated in Massachusetts in 1894 and was proclaimed by then governor Frederic Greenhalge .

Boston Marathon on Patriots' Day

The Boston Marathon has been run on Patriot's Day since 1897. It is currently organized by the Boston Athletics Association.

The race is set to start at 9:02 a.m. ET with the men's wheelchair field with the professional men starting at 9:37 a.m. ET and the professional women starting at 9:47 a.m. ET.

The race's only cancellation came in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2021 version was postponed to October 11 for the same reason.

In 2013 three people were killed and hundreds were wounded when two men detonated homemade bombs at the race's finish line.

Boston Red Sox playing on Patriots' Day

The Boston Red Sox have scheduled a game on Patriots' Day since 1959.

This year the first pitch for the game against the Cleveland Guardians is set to be thrown at 11:10 a.m. ET.

The game has been postponed six times in its history due to weather and cancelled once in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Is Patriots' Day celebrated outside of New England?

Patriots' Day is a school holiday in Wisconsin. Florida recognizes the holiday but it is not an official holiday in the state. North Dakota recognized the holiday in 2021.

Is it Patriots' Day or Patriot's Day

The position that the holiday should use the singular form of the phrase is held solely by the state of Maine. The rest of the country uses the plural version.

Is Patriots' Day a federal holiday?

Patriots' Day is not a federal holiday.

Tips on using verizon travelpass (1:00).

Verizon TravelPass Hi there! If you're planning on traveling abroad, we have a few simple tips to help you get the most out of your Verizon phone and your TravelPass. Make sure you enable roaming before you go, so that you can use data and voice services internationally. Go to settings, select cellular, then roaming, and make sure data and voice roaming are turned on. Remember, it may take up to three minutes for your phone to connect to local networks. If you experience service issues, be sure to turn your device off, then back on. This is a simple, yet effective way to reconnect your device to the international network while traveling. Making calls while outside the US will always need the international access code followed by a country code, and then the number you're calling. So on your iPhone, hold down the zero until you see the plus sign appear, enter the country code, then dial the number you want to call. And if you call a contact stored on your phone, double check that you've included the "+" and the country code.
