The synagogue and museum are a 20-minute walk from the Curaçao Cruise Terminal across the floating bridge.

Kura Hulanda Museum

Located in the Otrobanda district, the Kura Hulanda Museum offers a sobering glimpse into the Trans-Atlantic slave trade from the 17th to 19th centuries. The museum has 15 buildings that display the capture and relocation of Africans to the Americas. It’s one of the most comprehensive museums in the Caribbean, highlighting the horrors of the slave trade.

The museum is in a former slave yard and merchant’s home. You can see slave pillars for public floggings, tools used to trap, band, and punish slaves, and many other items related to the darkest period of Curaçao’s history. It’s a 15-minute walk from the cruise terminal.

Curaçao Maritime History Museum

The Curaçao Maritime History Museum showcases over 500 years of maritime history on the island. While touring the museum, you can view ship models, nautical charts, deep-sea diving helmets, navigation equipment, and a model of the floating bridge. Interactive exhibits and displays also narrate stories of shipwrecks, naval battles, maritime traditions, trade routes, and the cultural significance of Curaçao’s harbor.

Apart from the many exhibits on the museum’s two floors, the building is worth seeing. It’s located in a restored 17th-century building on the Waaigat inlet opposite the floating market. The oldest maps in the museum date back to the 1500s.

The Curaçao Museum is a 20-minute walk from the cruise terminal and documents the island’s rich history and culture. Artifacts in the museum include pre-Columbian Indian items, a plantation kitchen, antique mahogany furniture from the 18th and 19th centuries, and maps of the Americas and Caribbean.

The museum is the best place to learn about Curaçao’s diverse past, culture, and rich history. In addition to antique artifacts, the museum features a carillon with 47 bells and the cockpit of the first KLM plane to fly from Amsterdam to Curaçao, along with shaded grounds to relax and enjoy Caribbean culture.

Gallery Alma Blou

Gallery Alma Blou is the largest and oldest art gallery in Curacao. Art displays let you experience a wide range of Caribbean art—from folk art to classic paintings. Day trip to Klein Curaçao

Klein Curaçao (Small Curaçao) is a small, uninhabited island located 6 miles (10 km) off the island’s southeastern coast. The island boasts pristine white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, excellent snorkeling opportunities, and a shipwreck to explore. You can explore the old lighthouse on the island, relax in a thatched palapa, and enjoy a barbecue lunch.

It’s good to note that boat trips to Klein Curaçao may not be suitable if you have limited time in port. Most tourists suggest taking a full-day excursion to the island to enjoy its tropical, natural beauty.

Christoffel National Park has several hiking trails to immerse yourself in Curaçao’s natural beauty. You can choose from trails suitable for various fitness levels. If you’re highly fit and adventurous, you can hike to the island’s highest point at 1,239 feet (378 m) above sea level.

As you trek through the park, look for the rare white-tailed deer and the unique palabra owls (barn owls), adding to the thrill of your outdoor excursion. For the best experience, arrive at the park as soon as possible to avoid the scorching afternoon sun. Also, bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Curaçao is home to spectacular beaches. However, with limited time on a cruise day, which top beaches on the island are worth visiting? Here are some fabulous beaches near the cruise port in Curaçao. 

The closest beach to the cruise terminal is Punda Beach. Just a 15-minute walk from the pier, the small city beach is ideal if you want to explore Willemstad and spend time on sandy shores. The beach offers soft sands and excellent sea views close to the colorful buildings of Willemstad.

Mambo Beach

Mambo Beach is one of the most popular beaches near the cruise terminal. It’s a 15-minute drive from the Curaçao Cruise Port and offers a lively atmosphere with numerous beach clubs, restaurants, and a vibrant shopping boulevard. The crystal-clear, calm waters are excellent for swimming, snorkeling, and water sports. Several beach bars dot the shoreline.

One of its highlights is Mambo Beach Boulevard. This area includes 50 stores, plenty of restaurants, and entertainment options. Additionally, Mambo Beach is near the Sea Aquarium and Dolphin Academy. Its convenient location near the cruise port and diverse amenities make it ideal for spending the entire day there.

Blue Bay Beach

Blue Bay Beach is a popular beach destination for cruisers in Curaçao, as it’s only 15 minutes by taxi from the port. Best Curaçao Beaches Near the Cruise Port

Curaçao beaches near the cruise port are few in number compared to other Caribbean destinations. But four are popular with visitors.

Antigua claims 365 beaches or one for every day of the year. Curaçao has 17 of them, but quality matters more than quantity. Unfortunately, most of them require a fee for access unless you are staying at a resort.

In fact, a group of four people came into the lobby of the hotel where we were staying. They told the front desk clerk they were members of the hotel chain’s elite club, they were on the island because of a cruise stop, and they wanted to use the beach.

The clerk said it would cost them $25 apiece to use the hotel’s beach. So much for the elite club.

Most of the beaches are on the southeast coast of the island, which is the location of Willemstad and most of the major hotels. Even though Willemstad is the cruise port, it doesn’t mean the beaches are near it.

Curaçao Beaches Near Cruise Port

Unfortunately, we could not find a beach within walking distance of the cruise terminal.

So cruise visitors will either have to take a taxi, rental car or excursion bus to get to the nearest ones: Cabana, Mambo, Blue Bay and Jan Thiel. Most shore excursions that include beaches also go to other sightseeing attractions and therefore cost more money.

Taxi rates are mostly flat fees, according to the Curaçao Tourism Authority. One source quoted $20 for a group of four people from the cruise port to Mambo Beach, which is fairly expensive for a Caribbean island and such a short distance.

So cruise visitors have two choices:

Beach Shore Excursions

Cruise shore excursions tend to take guests to Cabana, Mambo, Blue Bay and Jan Thiel beaches. Cabana and Mambo are about four miles from the cruise port. Blue Bay is six miles away and Jan Thiel is seven miles.

Cabana and Mambo Beaches are within walking distance of the Curaçao Sea Aquarium. Together they make up what is called Seaquarium Beach. It has shops, bars and watersports and is popular with families and young couples.

One excursion operator offered a five-hour package tour of the flamingo park, Hato Caves and Mambo Beach for $67 per person.

Another operator has a half-day package that combines Grote Knip Beach and swimming with sea turtles with prices starting at $95.

A seven-hour package that combines Hato Caves, Jan Thiel, Porto Mari Beach and swimming with sea turtles with prices starting at $75.

Blue Bay Beach near the village of Sint Michiel is a shady beach with soft sand. It has quite a few facilities but charges for access.

The Curaçao Tourist Board recommends Jan Thiel Beach for snorkeling and diving.

Other Beaches

Kenepa has two beautiful coves that are among the island’s most popular beaches. Pergolas are available for shade. The beaches have only a few small snack bars. There is no entrance fee.

Klein Curacao has the longest and whitest beach. It is on Klein Curacao, an uninhabited island eight miles off the Curacao coast. It is a popular spot for boat charters and dive or snorkeling excursions.

Cas Abao is a white sand beach will full facilities. It is good for swimming and has restaurants, shops, restrooms and other facilities. It is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Daaibooi Baai is a small bay also close to Willemstad. It has shading, a snack bar and is good for snorkeling.

Beaches for Snorkeling and Diving

Curacao is known for snorkeling and diving. Beach access is common, but these beaches usually have coarse sand and are mainly used just for access.

Kokomo Beach is one of them. Its location near Willemstad makes it a good option for cruise visitors.

Caracasbaai also has coarse sand and is popular because it is part of the island’s underwater park. It has several small restaurants and free admission.

Playa Kalki is a small cove with a diving platform. Facilities include a snack bar, dive shop and a nearby restaurant.

Note that it is illegal to sunbathe topless on Curaçao beaches, but some visitors do it anyway.

Willemstad is one of the main highlights of Curaçao. Within walking distance from where cruise ships dock, the city's unique colonial architecture has a number of attractions to explore on foot and on your own.

In town there are landmarks like the floating Queen Emma Bridge and the Fort Amsterdam ; religious sites like the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue or Saint Ana Catholic Church; and museums such as Kura Hulanda and the Maritime Museum . With so much to explore in the capital of Curaçao, the cruise visitor who doesn't venture beyond Willemstad will be missing a lot. The pristine beaches and coral reefs with spectacular water visibility are an invitation to enjoy a relaxed day sun basking or in more active pursuits - snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing or fishing - in beaches like the famous Blue Bay .

Other attractions out of Willemstad should also be considered - like the Aquarium or the Hato Caves . It is also easy to combine any of these attractions with some time in the sun as both Kontiki and Mambo Beaches are close to the cruise piers.

Taxi Stand - Mega Pier

As mentioned, Willemstad is within walking distance of both cruise terminals, but if the cruise passenger wishes to explore other attractions (besides the excursions offered onboard, with independent tour operators online or at the pier) there are taxis (around $40.00 per hour for up to 4 people) and car rentals .

The Public Buses are limited - and not as good as services in Aruba (another Dutch island close by) - but there are Electrical wheelchairs for rent next to the Mega Pier.

Cruise Ships dock at one of two terminals ( Mega Pier Cruise-Terminal and Mathey Wharf ) relatively close to each other, both at walking distance to the main attractions of Willemstad and with all major amenities and services.

If only one cruise ship is in port, the Mega Pier is where she will dock regardless of the size or the length of the stay - the Mega Pier is the one on the left in the picture above .

cruise visitors will find most services and amenities are in the open air terminal next to the Mega Pier - information booth, restrooms, a taxi stand, an independent-tour-operator stand, a couple of places with refreshments and, naturally and inevitably, souvenirs shops.

Complimentary Wi-Fi is available at the terminal but one other service available at the Mega Pier Terminal must be highlighted - a Wheelchair and ECV Rental , ideal for those with mobility difficulties.

The Mega Pier Terminal is a bit farther away from the landmarks of Willemstad but the walk is both pleasant and appealing as you pass along the way through the Renaissance Resort with two famous and connecting malls . On the first one, you will find high-end shops like Adolfo Dominguez, Tiffany & Co, Breitling, Paul & Shark, Hilfiger, Nautica, Mango or Guess and a Starbucks (Free Wi-Fi). The second Mall occupies the area of the 19th century waterfront Rif Fort - along with shops there are services like the Atlantis Adventures (Tours including a Trolley Train ), the Budget Car Rental, an ATM, a few cafés, bars, ice cream shops and a couple of good restaurants.

Once outside the Rif Fort area, the cruise passenger will be at around 600 feet (200 meters) from Brion Square and the floating Queen Emma Bridge - a major landmark of Willemstad.

The Mathey Wharf is the other possible docking pier. With capacity for as many as 4 ships, this terminal occupies the old wharves of Otrabanda and Punda next to Queen Juliana Bridge across the St. Anna Bay.

At the Mathey Wharf the cruise visitor will also find an Information Booth, Restrooms, a Taxi stand, a stand for independent tour operators, and souvenirs shops. Once outside, a left turn will take you pass the wonderful building of the Gouverneur De Rouville Restaurant to Brion Square and the floating Queen Emma Bridge pedestrian cross to Punda - a historical neighborhood of Willemstad where major landmarks are found.

Main Attractions in Willemstad

It is impossible to resist the multiple photo opportunities when crossing Queen Emma Bridge with its great sights of the waterfront with its colorful Dutch colonial buildings , the Queen Juliana Bridge, the Fort Amsterdam and endless ocean views.

Once in Punda the Editor recommends a visit to the old Fort and in particular to the Fort Church Museum (open in the morning only until 1:30 pm - entrance US$5.00). This is also the place to hop on the Trolley Train if you wish to sightsee (seating) the major landmarks of Willemstad (slightly over 1 hour, US$25.00).

The main street next to the fort is Breedestraat with many of the duty-free shops Willemstad is known for - Penha, Diamonds International, Effy or Cariloha. Walking along Breedestraat, you will see narrow streets leading into a busy area with more shops - you will feel tempted to explore this area and if bargain-duty-free hunting is your plan that's the place to go. But a little farther east a very nice tree lined open area - Koningin Wilhelminapark (Queen Wilhelmina Park) - is a good place to enjoy a rest on a shaded café .

Walking inland from Koningin Wilhelminapark, along Columbusstraat (Columbus Street), will take you to the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue - a unique Jewish Cultural Historical Museum. A bit farther, by the waterfront, the Floating Market is on the northern edge of this area - around 300 meters (900 feet) from the Koningin Wilhelminapark - and a sight not to be missed. From the Floating Market, you can view a typical Dutch bridge - Queen Wilhelmina Bridge - and you should cross it to visit the Curacao Maritime Museum and have a close look at the beautiful Villa Maria next door.

The area between the Floating Market and Koningin Wilhelminapark is an irregular grid of narrow streets and small squares lined with shops, cafés, and restaurants that are a delight to explore. It is bordered on the West side by a scenic waterfront with a series of places to enjoy lunch, a quick bite or just a drink - Iguana Café is a famous spot, and one of the Editor's favorite, to enjoy a rest and catch up with emails as it offers Free Wi-Fi.

Willemstad is the capital of the Dutch Caribbean island, Curacao and the beauty of the island hits you as soon as your ship pulls into port. The island is known for its pastel-colored town square as vibrant as tropical flora.

Unique to Willemstad is the floating pedestrian bridge that spans the deep and narrow channel splitting the city’s two districts.

In Willemstad you will find a fun and lively small city with people who are as colorful as the surrounding buildings.

As a Dutch island the official currency is the Antillean Florin, though most vendors and retailers will accept U.S. dollars. There are several ATM’s, banks, and money exchanges available in Willemstad.

Like many of the nearby islands, the local language is Papiamento. However, most people are fluent in and will speak English, Spanish, or Dutch.

Where You Dock in Willemstad – Curacao

Cruise ships pull into the Santa Anna Bay, a narrow and very deep channel. The bay separates the two main districts of Willemstad, Punda to the east and Otrobanda to the west. 

Smaller cruise ships dock at the Curacao Cruise Terminal while larger ships which cannot travel under the Queen Juliana Bridge dock at the Mega Pier.

Regardless of where your ship docks, both are only a few minutes’ walk from downtown as well as the Queen Emma Bridge which connects the two districts.

Getting Around Willemstad – Curacao

Crossing the channel

One of the first things cruise ship passengers will learn about visiting Willemstad is how to use the pedestrian Queen Emma Bridge. This pedestrian bridge is designed so that when ships are coming through port the bridge will open. Due to the frequency which the bridge opens during the day, free passenger ferries are provided to cross the channel while the bridge is open for ships.

Taxi stands will be located at both ports.

Unlike many islands, taxi destination costs on Curacao are not predetermined based on the destination. So, it’s important that you agree on a fare with the driver prior to getting in a taxi. Though, if you are considering hiring a taxi for sightseeing (recommended) the cost is about $20 USD per hour.

Bus travel is common on the island with fares around $2 USD. Bus schedules and routes are found within the city and at both ports. Transportation called “collective” cars and vans are easy to catch to bus you around the island, however it is important to make sure the license plates for these vehicles says “bus” on them.

Vehicle Rental :

Willemstad has several car rental locations at and near the ports with prices starting around $35 USD per day and up. Vehicle travel is on the right-hand side of the road so for most North American travelers you won’t need to get your feet wet trying to drive on the other side of the road.

The only requirements to drive in Curacao is that you have a current driver’s license and an international credit card.

Unique to Willemstad is the trolley which provides a 75-minute tour of the city’s main sites. You can catch the beginning of the trolley tour at the historic Fort Amsterdam. Keep in mind that the trolley won’t allow you to hop on and off, so if you are planning on the tour be prepared to stay the entire 75 minutes.

Shopping In Willemstad – Curacao

Willemstad is truly a shopping experience. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site , the walk from the ports to downtown is lined with cafes, fun museums, and shopping.

Most of the shopping is found in the Punda District where you will find clothing, souvenirs, Dutch cheeses and delicacies.

The floating market also offers a variety of fresh foods and local crafts.

Dining In Willemstad – Curacao

You won’t go wrong by taking a trip down the Handelskade where you’ll find several places to eat. If you are interested in really exploring the island history a must would be Penha & Sons which is the oldest building in Willemstad built in 1708.

Cuisine on the island ranges from common fare such as burgers and chicken to local seafood, Caribbean, Hispanic, and of course Dutch cuisine.

Wherever you go, it’ll be hard to stay away from cocktails poured with famous Curacao liqueur.

Things To Do in Willemstad – Curacao

Traveling by cruise ship through the Caribbean is ideal because if you don’t, you’ll become well versed in the term “ship day.” Many islands shut down when ships aren’t in port and on Curacao this can also be true of Sundays when many stores are traditionally shut down. If your ship does happen to come in on a Sunday, don’t worry too much as many stores and activities will open on those occasions to help bring in the tourism.

Curacao is stunning from the colorful port city to the stunning beaches. Within the city of Willemstad you can spend days exploring everything from the floating market along the water’s edge, to Fort Amsterdam, the shopping, and other historic locations.

The island has a rich history, much of it focused on plantations and the slave trade. The Kura Hulanda museum explores the dark history of Curacao’s involvement in African slavery in the Caribbean. The Savonet Museum covers 4,000 years of the island’s history with much of its focus on plantation life. The museum is located on the grounds of the Landhuis plantation and its restored and partially restored buildings.

Curacao’s Sea Aquarium is fed by nearby sea water and displays much of the marine life found around the island including dolphins, sea lions, and sharks.

It would be hard to mention Curacao activities without the Old Quarry Golf Course which has one the Best Golf Course in the Caribbean by USA Today in both 2018 and 2019. The course is 6,920 yards from the championship tees and offers an 8,000 sq. ft. clubhouse with golf shop, locker rooms, lounge, and restaurant.

The Blue Bay Golf and Beach Resort is located on the sea with amazing views from wherever you stand on the course.

The Curacao Golf and Squash Club is a private 600-member club with a par-70 18-hole course. The setting is spa-like located among the quiet tranquility of the island.   

Curacao is known for its crystalline hues of blue waters. Each of the dozens of beaches on the island have their own unique personality from powdery white sand beaches and rolling hills to seductive privacy and rocky shorelines. Here are three of our favorites.

Located in the Lesser Antilles, in the southern Caribbean Sea, 65 km/40 miles north of the Venezuelan coast, Curacao island forms the group of the ABC Islands together with Aruba and Bonaire. The island of Curacao is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and is the largest island of all three.

Curacao Cruise Port

The port of Curacao is located in Willemstad, the island’s capital, and consists of two cruise terminals: Mega Pier cruise terminal , situated a 10-15 minute walking distance from the city center, and Mathey Wharf terminal , situated closer to the downtown.

Note: To better understand the position of the terminals, you should know that Willemstad is divided into two parts: Otrobanda (meaning “the other side”), and Punda , where the main Willemstad attractions are. The two parts of the city are divided by St Anna Bay (Sint Annabaai) and connected via Queen Emma Bridge, the pedestrian pontoon bridge and a popular city landmark. The Queen Juliana Bridge is another bridge that connects the two parts of the city, built for automobile traffic in 1974.

1. Mega Pier Cruise Terminal

This terminal is situated in Otrobanda and consists of Mega Pier 1 and Mega Pier 2 which can accommodate large cruise ships of all sizes. This is where the major cruise lines and the large cruise ships dock.

These open-air piers are equipped with several facilities, such as a tourist information desk, taxi rank, tour operator stands, restrooms, wheelchair assistance, and ECV rental for guests with mobility issues.

The city center is situated within a 10-15 minute walking distance from the Mega Pier cruise terminal and is easy to reach. Once you exit the terminal area, keep following the path to the famous Renaissance Curacao Resort & Casino where you’ll find shopping malls with upscale stores and free Wi-Fi connection.

After you pass through the Renaissance Resort, you’ll reach Rif Fort village , an unusual, seafront shopping complex housed in a restored 19th-century fort. This is a famous tourist area where you’ll find many shops, ATMs, several restaurants, and tour operator booths offering trolley train rides, car rentals, bike rentals, and more.

Less than a 5-minute walk from there you’ll reach the Queen Emma Bridge and the Punda side, where you can explore the main Willemstad highlights and historical landmarks. There is the main bus station as well, however, the buses don’t run regularly and I wouldn’t recommend you use them.

2. Mathey Wharf

Mathey Wharf is another docking location that consists of four piers. It is located in St Anna Bay and occupies the old wharves of Otrobanda and Punda next to the Queen Juliana Bridge. This terminal is usually used if the Mega Piers 1 and 2 are too busy, and this is where smaller cruise ships normally dock (those that can pass under Queen Juliana Bridge.

The bridge is 56.4 m (185 ft) high). Mathey Wharf dock is located a 5-10 minute walk from the Willemstad city center and features facilities such as a tourist information desk, a taxi rank, tour booths, souvenir shops, and restrooms.

Getting Around Willemstad Curacao

• The port area and Willemstad downtown are flat and suitable for wheelchair users/people with walking difficulties.
• The port and tourist areas in Curacao are safe to move around.
• The currency in Curacao is the Antillean guilder (ANG). 1 USD equals approximately 1.79 ANG. Credit cards and US dollars are widely accepted, so there may not be a need to change the money. ATMs are available in the town.
• You can explore all Willemstad attractions on foot. However, if you decide to go around the island, the best way to do it is by car, on a guided shore excursion, or by taxi or bus. Keep in mind that public buses are not recommended if you’re staying on the island only for a day, because they don’t run as frequently. You can find taxis in the port and town. • Willemstad doesn’t have a city beach. The nearest beach to the cruise port is Mambo Beach , a gorgeous sandy beach located around a 10-15 minute drive from the port.
• Curacao’s climate is tropical semi-arid and hot all year round. The ABC islands sit outside the hurricane belt, so there’s very little threat of tropical storms and rains in general. The peak season is from December through mid-April.
• Curaçao International Airport is the main Curacao airport and is located on the island’s north coast, around 11 km/7 miles (a 15-20 minute drive) from the port of Curacao.

Located in the southwest of Curacao, the Willemstad Historic Center and the harbor have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as they boast marvelous and diverse architecture. There are several attractions you can visit during your exploration of this picturesque city.

1.1. Rif Fort Village

You can’t miss this spot as you pass through it on the way to Willemstad downtown from the Mega Pier cruise terminal. Rif Fort village is situated in the Otrobanda quarter, by the entrance to St Anna Bay and less than a 5-minute walk from the Queen Emma Bridge.

It is a unique shopping complex housed in a former defense fort, offering beautiful sea and Punda quarter views. You can browse a large number of shops housed in old, colorful buildings, climb the fort, or try some local delicacies in one of the bars and restaurants. It is a very touristy place, so you should expect higher prices and a lot of crowds.

1.2. Brion Square

Once you exit the Rif Fort village, you’ll find yourself on a large square filled with several shops and cafes, as well as a few local vendors selling tours. From the square, you can marvel at the Queen Emma Bridge and the colorful Dutch buildings in the Punda district.

1.3. Queen Emma Bridge

Constructed across St Anna Bay, this pedestrian floating bridge constructed in 1888 and renovated multiple times connects Otrobanda and Punda districts. The bridge is also called “Swinging Old Lady” by the locals and regularly opens to enable the passage of larger vessels.

1.4. Dutch colonial buildings

As soon as you exit the Rif Fort village, you’ll see the Queen Emma Bridge and the line of colorful Dutch buildings. These typically Dutch buildings feature magnificent colonial architecture and are best seen from the pontoon bridge. Once you cross the bridge, you’ll see several waterfront cafes, restaurants, tour agencies, jewelry, perfume, clothing, and other duty-free shops housed in the buildings.

1.5. Fort Amsterdam

Less than a 5-minute walk from the pontoon bridge, in the Punda quarter, you’ll come across one of the major historic landmarks – the 17th-century Fort Amsterdam. Today, the fort serves as the seat of the government of Curacao, the governor, and the government officials.

1.6. Fort Church

Featuring a beautiful yellow façade and a picturesque clock tower, the 18th-century Fort Church is the oldest in Curacao, situated within the walls of Fort Amsterdam. It is simply decorated inside and also houses a Fort Church Museum where you can learn about the island’s culture and the history of the Protestant community of Curacao.

1.7. Queen Wilhelmina Park (Koningin Wilhelminapark)

Tucked behind the Fort Amsterdam complex, this green area features the Queen Wilhelmina statue, a few shaded cafes, and two popular signs offering great photo opportunities: Curacao and Dushi signs (“dushi” means “sweet, nice, dear”).

1.8. Breedestraat

This is the main shopping street in Willemstad that starts right after you cross Queen Emma Bridge. Here you’ll find a large number of duty-free shops, clothing and souvenir stores, and brands like Swarovski, Cariloha and Del Sol, Diamond International, Penha, and others.

1.9. Mikvé-Israel-Emanuel Synagogue

Situated only one block away from Queen Wilhelmina Park, the 18th-century Curacao synagogue is the oldest continually used synagogue in the Western Hemisphere housed in an imposing, yellow-façade building. It also houses a Jewish Historical Museum.

1.10. Curacao Markets

Floating Market , New Market , and Old Market can be found within a 5-minute walk from the main street and the Synagogue, alongside the canal by the Queen Wilhelmina Bridge. Here you can buy fresh goods from the locals, and get some delicious, authentic Curacao dishes such as iguana stew in the rustic Old Market, offering live cooking shows and a unique ambiance.

1.11. Maritime Museum

Once you cross a typically Dutch, Queen Wilhelmina Bridge, you’ll come across the Maritime Museum, offering exhibits on more than 500 years of Curacao’s maritime history, as well as guided tours of the museum and harbor.

2. Blue Curacao Liqueur Factory

Have you ever heard of Blue Curacao Liquor? Located a 10-minute drive (5.5 km/ 3.4 miles) from the Curacao cruise port, the Curacao Liqueur Distillery at Landhuis Chobolobo is one of the most unique places to visit in Curacao!

The home of the original Curacao liqueur which has been produced here since 1896, the distillery offers guided tasting tours where you’ll learn about the distillation process of the Blue Curacao liqueur and various types of this renowned Curacao alcohol.

3. Curacao Beaches

The island of Curacao boasts lush nature and breathtaking beaches that definitely deserve a place on your Curacao bucket list. The majority of the beaches are located on the west coast of Curacao, where there are no strong winds and the sea is calm. Here is my list of the best beaches in Curacao:

3.1. Mambo Beach

Many cruise guests take a trip to Mambo Beach, one of the island’s most beautiful beaches and the closest one to the cruise port. Mambo Beach is located a 10-15 minute drive from the port of Curacao (around 7 km/4.3 miles) and to get there you can book a shore excursion , take a taxi, or take a public bus from the Willemstad downtown.

The beach has a long stretch of powdery sands and crystal clear turquoise water, several beach bars, restaurants, plenty of gift shops, cabanas, sunbeds and umbrella rentals, and an aqua park. Some areas of the beach are more crowded, while some are more peaceful. There is a small entrance fee to the complex.

3.2. Blue Bay Beach Resort

Blue Bay Beach Resort is situated a 15-20 minute drive from the Curacao port (around 10 km/6 miles) and ranks among the most beautiful beaches on the island. The beach is part of the private resort featuring beach and golf courses, luxury villas, several bars and restaurants, and a stunning private beach tucked in a bay named after its blue azure waters.

The beach is sandy with some rocky parts, not too long, and has both shallow and deep parts. Blue Bay Beach boasts amenities such as bars, restaurants, sunbeds, umbrella rentals, water sports activities, showers, changing rooms, massages, and a playground for kids.

There is an entrance fee to pay and it can get crowded. The best way to get to Blue Bay beach is on a tour, or by taxi.

3.3. Kleine Knip (Kenepa Beach)

Surrounded by cliffs and dense tropical forests, this beach is a dreamy place hidden in the lagoon far from the hustle and bustle of civilization. It is located a 50-minute drive (40 km/25 miles) north of Willemstad and you can best reach it on a tour , via taxi or public bus from Willemstad.

Kleine Knip is a small, intimate beach with a lot of natural shade and very limited facilities. There is no entrance fee, no wristbands – just several beach chairs and umbrellas to rent, picnic tables, and a small place to buy refreshments. It is a sandy public beach with some rocks and coral pieces on the waterline, so make sure you bring water shoes. Also bring snorkel gear, because snorkeling is amazing.

3.4. Grote Knip

Kleine Knip’s older sister, Grote Knip is another hidden gem set in gorgeous natural surroundings. Situated north of Kleine Knip, around a 50-minute drive from the Curacao cruise port, Grote Knip is a secluded beach tucked in a lagoon in a high rock cove offering fantastic snorkeling and beautiful, clear water.

There are amenities such as beach chair and umbrella rentals, a parking lot, and a small kiosk where you can get snacks and refreshments.

3.5. Cas Abao Beach

This secluded piece of heaven lies on the northwestern coast like all other beaches and is located less than a 40-minute drive (29 km/18 miles) from the port of Willemstad. The road is bumpy and curvy, and there is a small entrance fee for the parking that you pay on-site.

It is a long sandy beach offering great snorkeling, watersport activities (snorkel, kayaks, banana boat ride rentals), beach chair and umbrella rentals, a bar, a restaurant, showers, and lockers. Cas Abao Beach is surrounded by lush nature, which makes it a perfect beach escape for those who seek the peace and silence of nature.

3.6. Playa Porto Mari

In the bay next to Cas Abao Beach, there is another pearl waiting for you – Playa Porto Marie, a sugar-white, sandy beach offering amazing snorkeling, beach chair and umbrella rentals, restrooms, showers, and a bar restaurant. The beach is a frequent stop on Curacao snorkeling tours.

3.7. Playa Lagun

This beach is another hidden gem located around 40 minutes’ drive from the cruise port, south of Kleine Knip. Surrounded by cliffs and hilltop hotel resorts, Playa Lagun is an intimate beach cove offering great snorkeling and diving. There are a few beach bars nearby and you can rent beach chairs and umbrellas. There is free parking on-site.

3.8. Playa Kalki

The beach is located in the north of the island, around a 1-hour drive from the Curacao port. It is a laid-back, small sandy cove with a snack bar, and chair rental facilities, best known for diving and snorkeling.

3.9. Playa Piskado (Playa Grandi)

Located south of Playa Kalki, in the north of Curacao, a 45-minute drive from Mega Pier Cruise Terminal, Playa Piskado is one of the most famous beaches for turtle spotting!

You can often swim with these friendly sea creatures in the shallow, clear water of this small beach. Turtles often come to the shore, so you can swim directly from the beach.

3.10. Tugboat Beach

This beach is situated around a 25-minute drive southwest (13 km/8 miles) from the cruise port, in the famous Caracas Bay, known as a great snorkeling and diving site.

This rocky pebble beach is famous for the tugboat wreck that sank several years ago and has become a popular underwater attraction ever since. The wreck lies only 5 m (16 ft) below the water’s surface and can be easily reached from the shore.

4. Shete Boka National Park

One of the major island’s natural attractions, Shete Boka Park sits at the foot of Christoffel National Park and the mountain featuring the highest peak of Curacao – Christoffelberg, with an altitude of 372 m/1.220 ft.

Located around 40 minutes’ drive (38 km/24 miles) from the Curacao cruise port, Shete Boka Park was named after the “seven bokas”, or seven inlets where three endangered species of sea turtles are known to lay their eggs. The national park spreads over 10 km/6 miles of Curacao’s north shore known for its rugged coastline and dramatic cliffs hanging over the series of caves.

The most famous inlets include Boka Tabla, Boka Pistol, Boka Kalki and Boka Wandomi . There is free parking at Boka Tabla, and the inlets are connected via walking trails and relatively close to each other.

5. Hato Caves

Located in the north of the island, a 10-minute walk from the Curacao International Airport, and a 15-minute drive (around 10 km/6 miles) from Curacao cruise port, the famous Hato Caves rank among the most visited attractions in Curacao.

Get ready to explore the island’s 300.000 years old past as you walk through the impressive coral limestone formations that you’ll find inside the cave: stalactites, stalagmites, a romantic water pool, the Virgin Mary statue, and other geological shapes whose mysterious beauty will blow your mind away!

This fascinating cave system is home to two types of rare bats: the Long-Tongued Bat and the Long-Nosed Bat, and you’ll find these interesting creatures hanging from the cave’s ceilings.

Once you finish the tour of the cave, you can take a self-guided walk along the Indian Trail set in the lush vegetation, and see the Indian paintings and carvings made by Caiquetio Indians more than 1500 years ago. You can also visit the cactus garden featuring hundreds of different cacti species, home to rare birds and friendly Green iguanas.

6. Snorkel and Diving at Caracas Bay and Klein Curacao

The island of Curacao is an ideal diving and snorkeling site as the whole island is surrounded by a fringing reef. While the east coast is known for its strong winds and forceful waves, the west coast of Curacao boasts calm, turquoise waters hiding fascinating underwater wildlife.

There are several great locations for snorkeling (I’ve mentioned a few beaches above), however, the ultimate snorkeling and diving experience awaits you at two popular sites: Klein Curacao and Caracas Bay.

6.1. Klein Curacao

A small, inhabited island (“Klein” means “little”) of Klein Curacao lies about 10 km/6 miles southeast of Curacao and is one of the most famous snorkeling and diving spots for turtle spotting. Hawksbill, loggerhead, and green sea turtles lay their eggs on the island’s beaches, and you can often spot them swimming in their wild, natural habitat.

6.2. Caracas Bay

Caracas Bay is part of the Curacao Marine National Park and is located only a 20-minute drive south-east of the Mega Pier cruise terminal (around 12 km/7.5 miles), and if you want to snorkel or dive there, the best way is to book a shore excursion.

The most famous attraction here is the legendary Tugboat shipwreck , lying 5 m (16.4 ft.) under the water’s surface, in the shallow, pristine waters of the bay. You can swim to the boat directly from Tugboat Beach, and explore its beautiful marine life. Caracas Bay is a dynamic place packed with restaurants, bars, hotels, and recreational areas.

Another popular snorkeling spot is the Director’s Bay , located next to Caracas Bay, famous for its vibrant marine life teeming with corals, sponges, sea horses, frogfish, eels, octopus, sea snails, and other tropical fish.

7. Off-road Curacao Exploration

Curacao is known for its dramatic landscapes, rugged terrain, and awe-inspiring natural attractions. For thrill-seekers, exploring the island in a 4×4 vehicle is the most exciting way to see its highlights and its nature.

Go wild through the sandy plains filled with giant cacti trees, iguanas, lizards, and other wildlife, visit the Curacao Ostrich Farm and Zoo on the east coast (a 25-minute drive from the cruise port), or Koral Tabaak nature reserve ‘s famous historic cave offering spectacular views of the north coast!

Lying around 65 km north of the coast of Venezuela, in the Lesser Antilles, in the southern Caribbean Sea, Curacao belongs to the group of islands called ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao). The island is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and the capital city is Willemstad, a beautiful, picturesque city located only a 10-minute walking distance from the Curacao cruise terminal.  The city is divided into two parts: Punda, whose colorful colonial buildings lined with a charming waterfront promenade are often featured on postcard covers, and Otrobanda, meaning “other side”, a historical quarter where large cruise ships normally dock. Curacao cruise port is large and has several docks, among which Mega pier 1 and 2 are used for large cruise ships and major cruise lines. Smaller ships that can fit under the Queen Juliana Bridge, a modern bridge built for automobile traffic to cross from Otrobanda to Punda, dock on the opposite side of St. Anna Bay that divides the two districts. 

Mega Piers 1 and 2 are equipped with a few facilities, such as a tourist information desk, souvenir shop, taxi rank, and large parking used mainly by tour buses. The bridge is one of the main attractions of the city and the most photographed one, especially because of the colorful Dutch buildings lining the St. Anna Bay waterfront that can be spotted across the bridge from the Otrobanda side.

Lots of tourists choose to book an excursion or hop in a taxi to a popular beach, but this isn’t your only option for a beach day in Curaçaos: you can walk!

Walking to a beach near Curaçao cruise port

Though walking to a beach is entirely possible, Curaçao’s warm temperatures and poor infrastructure mean that it can be a challenge.

Often, there isn’t a sidewalk and cars aren’t the most considerate towards pedestrians.

If you still want to walk, there are four good options that are around one hour’s walk away or three miles. This might seem too far for many, but you’ll be able to hop in a taxi it is!

The best beaches in Curaçao near cruise port

Here are the four closest beaches that we recommend.

Pirate Bay is near Piscadera but is a substantial walk from the cruise terminal.

To get there:

• You’ll need to walk to Baden Powell Weg roundabout then turn left and walk alongside Pater Euwensweg.
• Follow this road for a few miles until you come across Corendon Mangrove Resort.
• You need to turn left to head to the coast at the Aqualectra building then turn to the right to follow the sea path, which is called John F. Kennedy Boulevard.
• You’ll end up in Piscadera. Pirate Bay is located on the third exist to your left.

What to do in Pirate Bay

Pirate Bay is a sandy beach that’s loved both by locals and tourists.

The beach has a bar, toilets, and showers, and beach beds are a reasonable $5 per day.

If you love pizza, you must visit Tomatoes. This is one of Curaçao’s most renowned pizza restaurants.

Parasasa Beach

This is a quiet public beach that you’ll pass ten minutes before you reach Pirate Bay.

It’s a tranquil spot and has no facilities besides parasols and beds. The World Trade Center is close by, however, as is the Curaçao Marriott Beach Hotel.

There are good waves here on one side of the beach, which is great for surfing. The waters are calmer on the other side, which makes it ideal for relaxing.

Mambo Beach

This is the largest and most famous of Curaçao’s beaches.

There is a huge range of different restaurants as well as shops and beach clubs. You can also hire beach beds.

To access pirate bay from Curaçao’s cruise port, you’ll head in the opposite direct to Pirate Bay. It’s a much nicer route and passes some good sights along the way.

From the cruise ship, head into Otrobanda and then head over the pontoon bridge in the direction of Punda.

Pass through Breedestraat to Wilheminaplein. You’ll know you’re in the right place by the ‘Dushi Curaçao’ sign in the square. From here, head into the district of Pietermaai.

You’ll pass some wonderful houses that are full of color.

When you get to ‘Botika Juliana’, take the Penstraat, and then you’ll head straight for a long time. You’ll pass Playa Marie Pampoen and continue for a further 15 minutes to get to Mambo Beach.

What to do at Mambo Beach

This 160-meter-wide beach has so many activities to choose from. It’s a child-friendly beach with calm waters.

There are restaurants, stores, and a wide range of activities to choose from, which makes this place have a great atmosphere.

If you fancy seeing marine creatures up close, the Curaçao Sea Aquarium is home to:

• and turtles

As for water sports, you’ve got tugboats, snorkels and catamaran trips among others.

If you prefer to relax, there’s everything from a towel on the sand, a luxury beach bed, or a cabana for hire.

Playa Marie Pampoen

Before arriving at Mambo Beach, you’ll pass through Playa Marie Pampoen.

This is a public beach in a Willemstad suburb called the Marie Pampoen district.

It is an area that’s still in development, but you can lay down a towel and relax here.

Though it’s a small beach, you won’t have to pay to access it and though there are no parasols or beds, the palm trees provide great shade.

There are picnic tables too as well as a couple of restaurants towards the beach end.

The best way to get to the beaches

Though you can walk to all four of these beaches, it really isn’t recommended for most people.

This is because the lack of sidewalks and consideration for pedestrians makes this a dangerous activity. Not only this but with Curaçao’s high temperatures, a 5km walk really isn’t recommended.

Finally, you won’t gain an awful lot by walking. If your time on the island is limited by your cruise ship, it also might not be a good idea to waste time by walking.

As such, we recommend getting a taxi. Alternatively, you could head to something like the Saint Tropez Ocean Club.

Though not a beach experience, you can rent a cabana or sunbed and swim in the infinity pool. This is only a 15-minute walk from the port.

Curaçao Cruise Port Guide and FAQs

I’ve been lucky enough to visit Curaçao on several of the ships I worked on throughout the years, and after countless trips to the beautiful island over the years, I’ve put together this Curaçao cruise port guide to answer the most common questions I get asked.

Which terminal are we docking at?

This is a common question both repeat visitors and first-time cruisers ask.

The Curaçao cruise port, Port Willemstad, is located in Willemstad.

There are two piers, one called the Mega Cruise Terminal and the other another referred to as the Curaçao Cruise Ship Terminal. 

Because most larger cruise ships on the major cruise lines cannot fit under the bridge en route to the Cruise Ship Terminal, chances are that you will be docking at the Mega Cruise Terminal if you’re sailing with Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Celebrity, or Carnival.

What is there to do by the Curaçao cruise port?

Willemstad has an abundance of shopping available, from the moment you set foot onto land and well throughout the neighborhoods. 

As soon as you exit your ship at the Mega Cruise Terminal, there’s a number of small stores as well as a large shopping area named Renaissance Mall after the security checkpoint with name brand clothing stores like Mango and Nautica, jewelry shops, and more.

After leaving the Rif Fort area, there are a number of local artists and vendors lined on the waterfront selling small trinkets and souvenirs.

If you’re looking for a good place to get all your Curaçao gifts, this would be it.

Across the Queen Emma Bridge there are an endless amount of stores, from jewelry and electronics, to beach wear and souvenirs.

Food & Drink

The closest place to get your first drink in Curaçao is merely a few feet away as soon as you walk off the pier.

There’s a small bar among the stalls that line the cruise exist where you can get a quick drink before heading out to explore or on your way back onto the ship.

In the Renaissance Mall area you have to walk through to get to the city, you’ll find Starbucks and a handful of bars for your choosing.

There’s also a selection of eateries in the area offering burgers, sushi, pizza, seafood, ice cream (my personal favorite) and more.

For a more picturesque meal or cocktail, head over the Queen Emma Bridge for a row of waterfront restaurants and bars with views of the bay and colorful buildings.

If you’re lucky enough to have an extended stay in Curaçao with a late departure time, this is a great place to watch the sunset and see the Queen Emma Bridge lit up and in action. (Keep reading for more about this!)

Explore on a Free Walking Tour

Seeing Curaçao on a budget? You could easily spend the entire day walking around the port area and taking in the sights.

Here are a few must-see stops and attractions you’ll find along your walk.

Rif Fort is a former seaside fort that has been restored into a waterfront center with stores, bars and restaurants, and some cool views.

You’ll naturally find this area as you leave the Renaissance mall and head toward the city and it’s worth a stop and peak.

Queen Emma Bridge

The Queen Emma Bridge is an iconic landmark not only to the Curaçao cruise port, but to the country as well.

The unique pontoon bridge opens periodically when a boat or small ship needs to pass through and watching this happen is definitely a sight to see.

The gates on both ends of the bridge will close to foot traffic, and those already on the bridge will need to hurry off if they don’t want to be stuck on the bridge when it moves.

After a few minutes of the gates closing, the entire bridge will begin to shift out of the way before reversing the process once the ship has passed.

The entire process from the pedestrian gate closing to opening back up again can take up to a half-hour so time your crossings wisely.

At night, the bridge’s arches light up with rainbow colors and passing through definitely feels a little like you’re on the Rainbow Road in Mario Kart!

Colorful Buildings

I’m definitely a sucker for vibrantly painted buildings , and Curaçao definitely tops the list for beautifully expressive exteriors.

The colorful buildings of Willemstad are hard to miss and its unique characteristics has earned the UNESCO World Heritage Site as the Caribbean’s most colorful city.

Local legend has it that a former governor blamed his harsh headaches on the sun’s reflection off the monochromatically painted white buildings, which gave way to the colorfully coated exteriors seen all around the city.

The tale is later to have revealed that the governor actually owned part of a local paint factory, and requiring the town-wide architecture makeover was just his way of increasing his wealth. 

Where can I get free Wi-Fi in Curaçao near the port?

Finding reliable yet free Wi-Fi in Curaçao might seem like a challenging task, but I assure you there are a few places I regularly used. 

Also, a general yet useful rule of thumb for finding free Wi-Fi in ports is to follow the crew members!

Believe it or not, if you think the onboard ship Wi-Fi is expensive for you, it’s even worse for us.

So we definitely take advantage of any and all free internet we can get while on land.

It’s common for food and drink establishments to have their own password-protected Wi-Fi, which is often faster than the general, free networks.

If you don’t mind spending a few dollars or you’re planning on getting a bite to eat anyway, you can see if any restaurants advertise on their doors, windows, or signs that they offer free Wi-Fi, and nicely ask the restaurant staff for the password when you’re seated.

What are the best beaches in Curaçao near the cruise port?

Mambo beach.

If you have a full day to explore Curaçao, Mambo Beach is the place to go for some food and sun.

The beach is lined with shops and a second level of all restaurants. 

My surprise favorite was The Greenhouse Curacao , a fusion restaurant that served sushi as well as Mediterranean dishes.

I came for the cheap happy hour prices and view, but was pleasantly shocked with how good and fresh the sushi was. 

Going to Mambo Beach on a Budget

As with most places on the island, there’s a cost for everything: entrance, chairs, umbrellas, etc., but Mambo’s costs are minimal, especially if you go without a cruise ship’s excursion package.

Although it might seem expensive to go to a nice beach because of the price ship’s list in their excursion offerings, but there’s no reason you can’t go to Mambo Beach on your own with a local taxi for half of the price.

The taxi vans are usually located right after you exit the port security gates.

The taxi drivers will fill up the van with everyone going to the same location so plan on waiting 5-10 minutes until you’re on your way.

Mambo beach is one of the most popular destinations though, so it shouldn’t take long to get a full van.

Taxi Warning

Just a word of caution from my own experience: beware of the prices the taxi drivers advertise to you and clarify if the price they’re giving you includes entrance fees or not if you’re going to a resort.

Although I’ve mostly had no problems with the taxis in Curaçao, there was one driver who mislead our entire van just to fill it quickly, which unfortunately included both crew members and guests.

He didn’t tell us there was quite an expensive entrance fee to the resort that was not part of our original ride price once we had already arrived.

Also if you’re a small party with others in the taxi, ask if you’ll all need to return together at the same time or if you can have separate pickup times (if it matters to you).

The price you pay going to the beach with a full van will be very different than if you need to come back before everyone else with just a couple other people in the vehicle.

Playa PortoMari (Pig Beach) and The Playa PortoMari Pigs!

While Playa PortoMari takes a little longer to get to, it is significantly less crowded than Mambo Beach and there are friendly, wild pigs around to hang out with.

The Playa PortoMari pigs just showed up on one day and have been a fun addition to the beach so much so that tourists have started referring to Playa PortoMari as Pig Beach .

If you go to Playa PortoMari, just be aware that there is a fee for entrance, chairs, and umbrellas. Because the beach is part of the resort, there is only one option for food and drinks.

When I went in 2017, I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only did the pigs decide to make Playa PortoMari their home, but so too did a cat!

My waiter told me they named the feline Mari (of course) and both her and the pigs are now part of the Playa PortoMari family.

One Day in Curacao From Cruise Ship – Itinerary With Map

Are you looking for a one-day in Curacao itinerary from the cruise ship in Curacao? Then I got you covered!

The beautiful island offers many amazing things to do! So many things, it can be hard to choose what to do if you only have one day in Curacao.

I have stayed many weeks in Curacao this year and I know all the best spots!

As an avid cruiser, I know that not every itinerary fits in with your schedule, so I have prepared multiple options for a one-day Curacao itinerary here in this post!

The island of Curacao is pretty big, and you can’t possibly see everything amazing in one day.

If you arrive on a cruise ship in Curacao, you have a couple of different options to pick from. I will explain all the possible options in more detail later in this post.

You can either:

• rent a car and explore the island by yourself
• book an excursion or a day trip
• Go scuba Diving in Curacao
• explore Willemstad on foot
• go to the beach
• book a Private Curacao Tour for a personalized shore excursion

Cruise ships that dock in Curacao will arrive at one of two major cruise ship terminals in Willemstad. They either dock on the Mega Pier Cruise Terminal or the Mathey Wharf .

On days when only one cruise ship docks in Curacao, the Mega Pier Terminal is used. The Mega Pier has an open-air terminal with all kinds of amenities next to it. Find information booths, restrooms, and a taxi

If you walk outside of the Mega Pier Terminal you will immediately pass through the Renaissance Resort with the Rif Fort Mall. Find all kinds of shops and cafes there. There is also a Budget Car Rental, an ATM, and some good restaurants.

The  Mathey Wharf  is the other possible docking pier for cruise ships in Curacao. It has a capacity for as many as 4 ships. It is located next to Queen Juliana Bridge across the St. Anna Bay. Nowadays, only smaller ships dock here.

Same as at the Mega Pier, you can find an information booth, restrooms, and a Taxi stand. There is also a stand for independent tour operators and souvenir shops.

The Marichi Pier is sometimes also still in use, but only if the others are blocked.

The easiest way to explore Curacao is with an excursion or a day trip. I suggest not booking them with the cruise company – because they are usually much more expensive.

Make sure to book your tours with a trusted operator, like VIATOR . They offer free cancellations, in case the cruise ship is delayed.

Personally, this is my preferred option to explore Curacao in just one day. Most trips usually include pick-up at the ship and you don’t have the hassle of arranging any more things for yourself.

Here are my favorite day trips and excursions in Curacao:

⭐ Day Trip to Klein Curacao with a Catamaran or speed boat! Klein Curacao is a small, uninhabited island off the coast of Curacao. It is the most wholesome and special experience you can have. The boat ride is about an hour long. Then, you can enjoy the pristine white sandy beach and have lunch on your vessel. Cost: about 130 USD (my favorite day trip)

⭐ Snorkeling with Sea Turtles – half-day guided tour. Cost: about 85 USD

⭐ AQUAFARI : Explore the marine life in a very special way, with a big helmet and a water scooter! So much fun – and no experience necessary! Cost: about 145 USD

⭐ Small group island tour: Shete Boka, Landhuis Chobolobo, Kenepa Beach, and much more! Cost: about 110 USD

⭐ Clear Bottom Kayak Photoshooting (for some awesome memories)! Cost: about 160 USD

2. Get a Rental Car And Explore the Island

Willemstad is within walking distance of the cruise port. If you are mainly interested in checking out the city, you won’t need a car.

If you want to see more of the island, I suggest booking a rental car. I prefer booking via this website in advance.

It takes about an hour to drive from Willemstad all the way out to the west. Make sure to account for that when picking your activities – many people underestimate driving times on the island.

🌴 Go to the beach : there are 39 amazing beaches in Curacao. If you enjoy serviced beaches, I suggest Jan Thiel Beach, Mambo Beach, Cas Abao Beach, Kokomo Beach, or Playa Porto Mari. For more info about Curacao’s beaches head over here.

🌴 Snorkeling or diving: Curacao has amazing marine life. Many beaches have snorkel and dive shops where you can rent gear for your underwater adventure. The most interesting beaches for snorkeling and diving are Tugboat Beach, Playa Lagun (sea turtles), Daaibooibay, and Playa Kalki.

🌴 Hiking and adventures: Shete Boka National Park , Christoffel National Park, Hato caves, or the Tafelberg are great places for your trip.

🌴 Museums and history: Savonet Museum, Mongui Maduro Museum , Jewish cultural historical museum , Jewish cultural historical museum

🌴 Art lovers: Check out the chichis at Serena’s factory, see the street art in Willemstad, participate in a Driftwood painting workshop at Tugboat Beach or Playa Porto Mari

3. Explore Willemstad

There are many amazing and exciting things cruise ship passengers can do in Willemstad.

Cruise guests will love the proximity of the Willemstad Cruise Port to the inner city. It is really only a couple of minutes of walking.

Visiting Willemstad on your cruise is a great idea for everyone interested in culture and shopping. It is also ideal for cruise guests who don’t want to book excursions or drive around on the island.

Otrobanda is the district to the west of Sint Anna Bay, where the cruise ship is most likely docked. Taking a walk around the scenic district will offer cultural insight and amazing photo spots. There is a lot of street art in this district.

The former fort “Rif Fort” is a waterfront mall with a courtyard, stores & bars as well as cafes. This is a great place to get some shopping in or simply sip a coffee in a relaxed atmosphere. The wall of the fort offers a great view over the bay and the Handelskade.

The Queen Emma Bridge is a floating pontoon bridge. It connects the two districts Otrobanda and Punda. From the Queen Emma Bridge, you can see the famous Juliana Bridge .

After crossing the Queen Emma Bridge, you can see the famous Handelskade. The row of colorful houses is an amazing picture spot in Willemstad. There are many fabulous stores and cafes in Punda. You can also find lovely street art here.

A great spot to visit is the  Plasa Bieu (Old Market)  in Punda. Try local dishes there, like cactus soup or goat stew. Also, check out the  floating market.  You can buy souvenirs and local arts and crafts there. The historical  Fort Amsterdam  is worth a visit.

Curacao has one of the oldest harbors in the Caribbean. The Curacao Maritime museum in Scharloo will show you all 500 years of harbor history.

The Pietermaai district is famous for being the SoHo of Willemstad. The vibrant and colorful part of town is home to many restaurants, ocean clubs, and hip bars. Check out Saint Tropez Ocean Club for a dip in the pool and a nice lunch.

There are loads of cute, colorful buildings. This place is ideal for young people. It is very Instagram-worthy, so make sure to check it out before heading back to the Willemstad Cruise Port.

Another great and relaxing way to experience Curacao is catching a cab and driving to a beach. There are quite a few amazing spots close by, so it will not cost too much money to go there.

Check out the 247taxi app or grab a cab at the cruise port. Make sure to agree on the price in advance. Many people try to scam tourists this way.

Great beaches in the area of Willemstad are:

When going on a cruise to Curaçao, it’s important to pack a variety of clothing options to suit different activities. The weather conditions are usually similar, so packing should be easy.

Here are some recommendations for what to wear in Curaçao on a cruise:

• Lightweight and breathable clothing: Curaçao has a tropical climate, so pack lightweight and loose-fitting clothes made of natural fabrics like cotton or linen. This will help you stay cool and comfortable in the warm temperatures.
• Swimwear: Don’t forget to pack your swimsuits or trunks since you’ll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the beautiful beaches and waters of Curaçao. Consider bringing a cover-up or a light beach dress as well.

Yes, especially during the day times Curacao is very safe. Willemstad is a great place to explore and I have not ever felt unsafe there.

Many things are quite expensive in Curacao. Especially in Willemstad, many shops raise their prices for cruise ship guests. Be aware of this!

There are many amazing things you can do with one day in Curacao, such as Willemstad Tours, Shete Boka National Park, Mambo Beach, Christoffel Park, Spanish Lagoon, Klein Curacao, Beach Hopping Tour in the West, Swim with Sea Turtles, and much more.

Yes, you can drive around Curacao in a day. Many areas in the east are not open to the public. However, you can drive all the way out west and in the area around Willemstad and also in the north. Renting a car for a day and driving around the island is a great way to spend one day in Curacao.

Yes, you can walk to Willemstad, the capital city of Curacao from the cruise port. However, you can’t reach any of the beaches in Curacao by walking. Rent a car or join an organized day trip for your one-day Curacao itinerary.

Cruise ships usually dock at the new MegaPier in Willemstad just next to the Rif Fort Shopping Center. Sometimes cruise ships even dock in the Sint Anna Bay.

You can grab a cab and go to Mambo Beach from the cruise port. Another option is to get a day pass at the Renaissance Hotel next to the cruise port, they have an artificial infinity beach that is worth visiting. If you have a rental car, you can explore all the fabulous beaches in the west.

The island lies about 60 km off the coast of Venezuela. It is about 70 km long and 12 km wide. Its landscape is dry and the vegetation matches the climate. While the island might not have the most beautiful forests or scenery of the Caribbean, it does have 28 beaches of which some are even in the world’s top 10. Curaçao cruise port guide – docked

Cruise ships dock at one of the following cruise docks: 2 Mega piers, Mathey Warf, Groote Wharf or Nieuwe werf. Most likely you dock at the Mega pier, but if there are more ships in town the Mathey Warf, Groote Wharf and Nieuwe Werf will also be used. See map above for the exact location of all cruise docks. This cruise dock is about 500 to 700 yards from Riffort. At the dock you will find an information booth, free wi-fi, taxi stand, tour operators and souvenir shops. You will also find a lot of facilities, cafe’s, restaurants and shops at the Riffort area close to the pier.

The Mathey Warf.  

This pier is located behind the pontoon bridge in Otrabanda. From here you are about 500 yards away from the city centre of Willemstad. You will find an information booth, taxi stand, tour operators and souvenir shops on the dock.

The Groote wharf.

This cruise dock is also behind the pontoon bridge but on the Punda side of town. From here it is a 600 yard walk into town. Although the Mega Pier provides the best facilities for cruise passengers, the other docks are also just a small walk away from transportation, shopping and the city centre.

The Nieuwe werf.

This dock is the one furthest away from the city centre. From here it is about a 30 minute walk into the city centre. See map above for its exact location. Check with your cruise line if they provide a shuttle service into town. For history and shopping you don’t have to go far. Where ever you dock in Curaçao the historical city is close by. It is easy to navigate by foot and has lots of historical sights and shopping to offer. To get further afield you might want to consider one of the following options:

Taxi from cruise terminal

Usually there are a limited amount of taxis waiting at the pier for you. Negotiate a price before getting into the taxi. The price from the dock to Seaquarium beach is approximately $25 and to Blue Bay also around $25. Taxis cost around 45 US dollar per hours depending on your negotiation skills. All prices are per taxi, up to 4 people. When in doubt about the prices ask for the Curaçao taxi tariff list.

Trolley train

There is a trolley train in Curaçao that gives 1 hour guided tours through the city. It leaves at 10 am from Fort Amsterdam. See location on the map above. Check in at 09.45 am. The cost is 25 US dollar for an adult / 15 USD per child (pay cash) per person.

Public Transport

Find the public bus station at Otrobanda and Punda. See map above for their exact location. You can choose to tour the island by public transport, although we don’t recommend it because it is not reliable.

There are no beaches within walking distance. You will need to take a taxi to be able to reach the beach. We feel the best beaches to go to are:

Hooks hut: which is also the closest beach to port. Hook’s hut offers a restaurant and bar at the beach in a informal setting. Bring a towel and sunscreen.

Sea Aquarium beach: This is the most popular beach on the island especially for the younger crowd. Find several beach clubs, souvenir shops and restaurants here. All beaches have facilities. Bring a towel and sunscreen.

Porto Mari: A littler further from town is where you will find Porto Mari. It is a beach that is primarily used by locals instead of tourists. It has white sandy beaches and a really nice atmosphere. All facilities are there. Bring a towel and sunscreen.

Grote Knip: This beach that has repeatedly been featured in magazines as being one of the top beaches in the world. However it is also one of the furthest beaches from port. It is about 45 minute drive from port / +/- 45 USD dollar one way by taxi. It is where you will find turquoise waters, white sandy beach and it is not crowded at all. This is the ultimate beach. Find a small bar and limited facilities here. Bring a towel and sunscreen.

Snorkeling Curaçao has brilliant snorkelling and diving spots. When you are interesting in diving make sure to prearrange a dive with one of the local operators. If you are interested in diving you will have success at almost any beach on the island. A special one that we can recommend: Blue Bay is a resort area where you will find coral reefs and turtles. Combine sunbathing, cocktails and snorkelling on this brilliant resort. Negotiate a taxi for approximately $25 one way.

On the north coast of Curacao you can find caves, natural bridges and Boca Pistol. It is a small inlet in the caves. The waves hit is about few seconds. When the waves clash into the tiny inlet it sounds like the shot of gun and the water can splash up to 20 meters / 60 feet into the air.

Each morning the Venezuelans gear up their small boats to make the journey over to Curacao where they dock in the historical centre to sell any kind of fruit and vegetables.

Near the airport of Curacao is where you will find the Hato Caves. It is cave system where you will find the most unusual rock formations. Go on a guided tour to go from room to room and to experience what life in a cave must have been like back in the days.

The biggest mountain of the island is called Christoffel mountain. It is 375 meter high. In the park you will find several museums, plantation houses, 3 driving routes and 8 hiking routes. You can explore the park in many ways. Go for a drive to the rugged coastline to see the waves splashing into the rock, visit the museum that tell the story about slavery or hike all the way to the top of the mountain.

When the Dutch West-Indian Compagnie took over the island a fort needed to be build to offer protection to the Dutch. At the entrance of the St. Anna baai, just across the water from the dock you can still see this Fort guarding the entrance to the capitol. Nowadays the parliaments hold house in this building. Feel free to stroll around explore the fort by foot.

The UNESCO world heritage site of Willemstad is the old colonial boulevard. This must be the most recognisable sight of Curacao. A row of colourful, restored waterfront warehouses resemble the canal houses of Amsterdam. This is proof of the colonial era when the Dutch would rule this part of the world.

Blue Bay is one of the nicest beaches on the island. Enjoy lots of different facilities here. Hang on out the beach, go snorkelling or golfing. Find this resort at about 20 minute drive from the dock.

Curacao has a dark history of slavery. Kura Hulanda is a hotel and museum near the city centre that will show you a chapter of the african slave trade and Curacao and the centre of slave trade for the ABC islands.

The most unusual site which will catch your eye as soon as you dock in Curacao is the pontoon bridge. This is a floating pedestrian bridge from 1888 connection the two parts of the city centre. The bridge blocks the entree to one of the biggest natural harbours in the world. The bridge will swing open every now and then allowing ships to sail in. When the pontoon bridge opens make sure not to be on it or you’ll be stuck. If the bridge is open free ferries will go up and down to service the pedestrians.

Hundreds of species of fish can be found in the aquarium of Sea aquarium. Anything you can find in the waters around Curacao is what you will find here as well like crabs, sponges and corals. The big attractions however are the dolphins that are here. Join them for a show or go for a swim with your new buddies.

On the island you will find many plantation houses. At the Chobolobo plantation house you will find the production of the local liquor of the island: Blue Curacao. It is being produced in the copper boiler from 1896. There is a small exhibition at the plantation house and you will also be able to taste it!

On the island you will find wild flamingos. Find them at Sint Willibrordus on the salt flats. From the dock it is about 45 minute drive.

If you are docked at the Mega Pier (main pier in Curacao) you will have Rif Fort at your door step. Together with Fort Amsterdam on the other side of the bay it was build in the 1820’s to defend the city. Rif Fort has now been transformed into a pleasant recreation area where you will find high end shops, souvenir shops and lots of bars and restaurants.

The ostrich farm is one of the most famous in the area. At the visitors centre you will find a restaurants and cafes and this is also where the guided tours leave from. On the tour you are going to befriend a ostrich or two. Stand on the eggs, feed the ostrich and if you want: ride the ostrich. Find the Ostrich farm at about 30 minute drive from the cruise dock.

This is the oldest still in use Jewish synagogue in the New World. It was build in the 1730’s by Pieter Roggenburg. The outside might not be very appealing, but wait until you see the inside.

This must be paradise on earth. This small uninhabited island close to Curaçao is known for its sandy beaches and amazing snorkelling. It takes some effort to get there and you have to be in port long enough, but if you are able to go: do it!

The Penha building is the most photographed building in Curacao. It was build in 1708 in Curaçao Baroque architecture with Dutch influences. It still stands proud on the “Handelskade”. Nowadays if it home to a large department store.

Everything You Need to See in the Cruise Port of Curacao

If you are taking a cruise through the southern caribbean, it is most likely that you will stop at the cruise port of curacao..

It is easy to see this island with little planning! No port excursion is necessary to make the most of your time in Curacao.

The last of the ABC islands, Curacao is known for its iconic bridges across St. Anne’s Bay and the Punda district, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Luckily, since all cruise ships dock in Willemstad, you will have a chance to see all three of these with little effort!

Fun facts about Curacao:

• Before the Queen Juliana Bridge opened in 1974, cars crossed over St. Anne’s Bay on the (now) pedestrian-only Queen Emma Bridge!
• Like Bonaire, Curacao has its own little island, “Klein Curacao.” It is located two hours offshore, which may not be ideal if you are only visiting Curacao for only one day.
• Although it is a Dutch island, the US dollar is accepted everywhere.

Visiting the Cruise Port of Curacao: What To Do in One Day

Not all beaches in Curacao are created equally. We discovered this on our previous trip to Curacao when we ended up at a beach covered in broken coral.

It was not exactly what we had in mind for swimming, so this time we made sure to find a beach with sand.

We caught a taxi right from the cruise port and headed to Mambo Beach Boulevard.

Mambo Beach is a more built up, touristy area with a Starbucks, which means (for all of my cheap cruisers out there)….free wifi! You can do some shopping, have a bite to eat or go for a dip in the ocean.

Once inside the complex, we sat at the Madero Ocean Club. There are different colored chairs, so be sure to ask and take your pick of which level (price) you want.

I personally thoroughly enjoyed Mambo Beach. It is a GREAT beach for swimming. I swam to the raft, which was probably about 30 feet offshore, and must have jumped off about 50 times.

Although Mambo is a man-made beach, it is one of my favorite places to swim in the Caribbean. It has beautiful clear deep water, and it very calm and sheltered with powdery white sand. There is a water break that keeps the large sea creatures out, but I hear that the snorkeling is good just over the other side. 

I could also say wonderful things about the Madero Ocean Club. Our waitress spoke 4 languages and was super friendly and helpful on the beach.

Mambo Beach is conveniently located close to one of the biggest attractions in Curacao- the Sea Aquarium. It is easy to hop over if the weather is not the best or if you tire of the beach. Both Mambo Beach and the Sea Aquarium are about a 20-minute taxi ride from the cruise terminal.

Ready for the most important part? Here it is:

On the way to Mambo Beach, you will cross the Queen Juliana bridge, which is actually unbelievable considering you were just admiring it from below.

On the way back to the cruise ship, ask your taxi driver to drop you off in the Punda district instead of the cruise port. Give yourself enough time to explore the Old Town market and do some shopping if you wish.

You can then cross over the Queen Emma pontoon bridge by foot on the way to the cruise terminal.

Beware the timing! The Queen Emma pontoon bridge  swings open  to let boats through. You do not want to find yourself stranded on the other side of the harbor squeezing in line for a ferry and risk missing the boat!

Bring your camera, as the moving bridge is a very neat sight to see.

One end turns on wheeled tracks while the free end is driven through the water by motors. It is not something that you would see in Canada! If you have enough time before you return to the ship, stay and watch it in action.

Please note that there are two piers in Curacao. Large ships, such as the Royal Caribbean Oasis class, will dock at the Mega Pier.

If you are traveling on a smaller ship, you may dock at the  Mathey Wharf . Be sure to clarify which pier you need to return to.
