  • j + 19 Jex Ter 2015-04-12 21:06:24 Although it seemed to be an innocent mistake, the Skipper was a scurvy rogue who knew there was going to be a bad squall. His diabolical plan was to "shipwreck" the Minnow (nudge nudge, wink wink), ransom Thurston Howle III for all his loot, and being a completely unscrupulous cad, have his way with Lovely and Ginger as well! (A.K.A.: bonus booty). The Skipper's evil plot was foiled because he had underestimated his 1st mate. Gilligan was actually a brilliant detective who had been investigating nefarious goings-on at The Tropic Port, and had traced them to the Skipper and his gang of scoundrels. His bumbling goofy demeanor (a la Colombo) and seemingly silly high-jinks enabled him to thwart the Skipper at every turn, while at the same time keeping the other castaways from becoming alarmed. The Professor got hip to what was going down pretty quick, and assisted Gilligan in any way he could. Although most of the engineering ideas came from the Professor (coconut telephones, etc.), he actually had to consult Gilligan for a lot of his more hard-core science diversions, since Gilligan had PhDs in both nuclear physics and organic chemistry. Most of the sexual tension in the show arose from the 3-way love triangle between Gilligan, the Professor, and May Ann, who was a vacationing pole dancer from Iowa. Add your reply
  • U + 9 Unregistered 2012-06-14 13:11:45 Five tourists from different walks of life decided to sail the high seas for adventure, photography, umbrella drinks, suntan, salty air, dolphin sightings and the wind in their face. Well, they got all that and more. They were all enjoying the cruise and when winds driffed in creating high swells of water, the party was over. At once they sheltered themselves with what little they could find, said their prayers and kissed their butts goodbye. On the other hand, the skipper being the salty dog that he was, somehow kept his vessle afloat till it crashed on a rather large bogg. You know the rest of the story. Or, you could simply sum it all up and say "never head out without asking the captain what the weather radar said" Rob s. Add your reply

I propose a congressional committee be formed to investigate. Add your reply
  • g + 7 glenndgreenwood 2018-01-21 17:00:59 Have a seat and listen to this story. It's a story about an unfortunate sailing excursion that was supposed to last just a few hours. It all started on a small sailing vessel (S. S. Minnow) at a port in Hawaii. The first mate (whose name was Gilligan [it's unknown if it was his first or last name]) was an experienced, but somewhat klutzy man. The Captain (Jonas Grumby A. K. A "Skipper') was a large, courageous man. The marine experience between the two sailors would turn out to be invaluable to the survival of the story to come. On this particular day, the Captain and his First Mate were taking five passengers on a sight-seeing tour. Among the passengers were a wealthy couple (Thurston Howell iii) and his wife (Eunice "Lovee" Wentworth Howell), a beautiful movie star (Ginger Grant), a professor (Roy Hinckley), and a beautiful, yet modest, farm girl from Winfield, Kansas (Mary Ann Summers). A couple hours into the cruise, a storm set in, setting the sailing vessel off course. The small vessel was tossed about in the tumultuous storm. The winds were blowing hard. Lighting pierced the sky and the thunder boomed loudly. The rain was relentless. Their little sight-seeing tour suddenly took a turn for the worst. The Captain and his First Mate fought hard to keep the vessel afloat. They had to assure the safety of their passengers at any cost. The storm lasted though out the night, leaving the crew and her passengers exhausted. By storms end, the vessel was beached on an uncharted, desolate island. It was fortunate that the vessel had been beached because there was a gaping hole in the starboard hull). Had the Captain and his First Mate been any less experienced, everybody would certainly have perished. The castaways befriended one another and soon became their own little community. They utilized most everything they could get their hands on. They had no electricity, no method of transportation, not a single luxury. Like the life of Robinson Crusoe, survival was a constant uphill battle. They endured many hardships, but remained optimistic through out their many experiences. Join us here each week for another chapter in the life and times of the marooned castaways on "Gilligan's Island". Add your reply

How Gilligan Could Get Stranded on an Island With Only a 3 Hour Tour

How Gilligan Could Get Stranded on an Island With Only a 3 Hour Tour

Reality tends to stick its big nose in and kick the hell out of our favorite fantasies sometimes, doesn’t it? Gilligan’s Island was a great show in its time, but the whole idea of it is kind of kooky since the premise that the three-hour tour…. the three hour tour , would mean that the SS Minnow would be outbound for an hour and a half and then inbound for the same time. Plus, unless the storm came out of nowhere, which can happen on the open sea, but is still noticeable when one is only a relatively short distance from shore, there is a possibility that the boat could be knocked off course. But then we get to the idea of the Minnow being in uncharted waters, which is hard to believe back in the 1960s, since sailors had been crisscrossing the globe for centuries at that point. Being blown off course wouldn’t be too hard on the open ocean, but given the size of the Minnow and how fast it might be able to go, an hour and a half wouldn’t put it that far from any known islands and wouldn’t constitute a seriously big search area when thinking about how much water a search party can cover. For the sake of the story though it does make sense to have them crash on an uncharted island that would somehow be beyond the reach of any search party, though it would be as likely as actually falling off the edge of the earth as happened in the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie. It is an interesting thought to contemplate however, that Gilligan and crew found a version of Davy Jones’ locker long before Disney ever came up with the idea.

Then there’s the cast to consider. The two millionaires make sense, but what about the professor, Mary Anne, and Ginger? What in the world were they doing on that cruise? What was Mr. Howell doing with all that cash on him anyway? There are so many questions pertaining to the characters and the story when it comes to this show that trying to sort them all out might be possible, but it’s a giant headache at times too. Why the Minnow was allowed to drift though is pretty straightforward. Gilligan, being Gilligan, tossed the anchor overboard to try and keep the craft in place, but either the Skipper didn’t check to make sure it was attached to the chain or Gilligan didn’t bother to look, because they lost the anchor and that was that, the boat was set to drift, apparently for three days it sounds like, before the craft crashed upon the island, with huge holes in the sides that made it look as though it hit a few submerged rocks on the way in. A truly skilled individual, or at least one that knew how to patch a hole here and there, could have fixed the boat and set it afloat again, but obviously that wasn’t in the cards as the castaways spent a good amount of time on the island, creating a show that a few of those involved didn’t even believe in that people came to care a great deal about.

Just looking at the dynamics of it, this journey should have been fairly simple, and the weather shouldn’t have been much of a factor for a skilled seaman like the Skipper since considering how much wide open ocean exists around Hawaii, spotting weather patterns isn’t too hard for those who know what to look for. The idea for this show was to basically make it appear as simple as possible and that was easily attained since the whole idea is one that likely made a lot of skilled and seasoned sailors wince considering the craft that was used and the fact that Skipper was someone that should have known what he was doing. Plus, having a professor on board, someone with skills leaning towards a variety of things that were found to be useful, should have been enough of a winning combination to get the group off the island in short order. The professor made things out of coconuts for crying out loud, it’s hard to think that he couldn’t come up with some sort of compound that could have been used to repair the Minnow while Gilligan and Skipper could have been chopping down trees to try and patch the holes as best they could, or find something else to use that might have worked.

That’s the point with shows like this however, it’s usually a chance to do the most outlandish things possible without really getting into the practical side of things. Once everything starts making sense the show is pretty much over, and reality gets to take the place of the fantasy.

Gilligan's SS Minnow to offer 3-hour Vancouver Island tours

Social sharing.

Gilligan's Island fans looking for a slice of TV nostalgia might want to get stranded on Vancouver Island, where they'll soon be able to take a three-hour tour on one of the boats featured in the iconic series.

"We're just trying to find a skipper and a helper," laughs Ken Schley, co-owner of the restored SS Minnow.

He and partner John Briuolo bought one of four boats used in the show two years ago for $100,000.

Schley said the boat is the one seen leaving the harbour in the show's opening sequence just before, according to the theme song, "the weather started getting rough."

It even has an old life preserver with SS Minnow emblazoned across it, as featured in the closing credits.

According to the Gilligan's theme song, "The tiny ship was tossed. If not for the courage of the fearless crew, the Minnow would be lost."

And much the same could be said the B.C. pair who rescued the 46-year-old Wheeler Express Cruiser.

Former owner unaware of boat's Hollywood history

The 11-metre vessel was almost lost — but not on a South Pacific beach surrounded by palm trees, a millionaire and a professor making radios out of coconuts.

Rather, it was in Parksville, B.C., where former owner Scotty Taylor had kept it since restoring the boat after it ran aground on a reef in northern B.C.'s Hecate Strait.

Its previous owner was taking the boat down the coast from Alaska when the mishap occurred in the stormy waters between the Queen Charlotte Islands and the B.C. mainland.

It was sold to Taylor with the promise he restore the boat. Schley said Taylor had the boat moored next to his own vessel for years and Schley had his eye on it.

"I knew it was The Minnow. Everybody in the marina knew it was The Minnow but it didn't get any fanfare," he said.

Unlike Schley, Taylor didn't know the boat's history when he bought it. He found out afterward, when the previous owner told him to look for the numbered Wheeler plaque above the door.

"He just liked the boat, he wanted to restore it, it was a nice looking boat, a wooden boat, a classic and he likes classic boats," Schultz.

Now, more restoration work has been done.

"I had a professional boat craftsman do it," Schley said. "It was definitely aged. There was a lot of wood rot.

"If we wanted to do tours or anything fun with it, it wouldn't have met any of the Coast Guard standards," he said. "We took the boat right down to the gunwales."

Restored from stem to stern

Mike Kent is that professional boat craftsman.

"We have gone through the boat from stem to stern and done everything that is necessary. The boat's had a rough life, so there was a lot of deterioration."

A photo of the show's cast hangs above the galley table.

Schley recently gave Gilligan's Island fan Todd Krainer a tour. The show had long finished production when Krainer was born, but he's still a fan.

"It's amazing," he said. "It's in way better condition than I ever thought it could be. It's just stunning actually the work they have put into this thing.

Schley and Briuolo spent about $200,000 on the restoration.

"It has definitely been a labour of love," Schley said.

But he says the partners are now taking the boat to special events for fundraisers and will start tours soon.

The series, which featured the hapless Gilligan stranded on an island with Skipper, the Millionaire and his Wife, the Professor, Ginger and Mary Ann, stopped production in 1967.

Prepare for a 3-hour tour of 'gilligan’s island'.

Hollywood is (tragically) adding 'Gilligan's Island' to the list of old TV shows getting modern movie makeovers

This just in! Hollywood has found someone to make a movie from an original idea – too bad it isn’t a NEW original idea. Warner Bros and Atlas Entertainment have drawn the short straw decided to move forward with the big screen adaptation of Lost Gilligan’s Island . Writing the screenplay will be Brad Copeland, who is also writing scripts for the Flight of the Navigator remake, Monster Squad and the upcoming Yogi Bear adaptation. If that isn’t enough to get you on the excitement train, then you’ll be happy to hear he also wrote Wild Hogs *thud*. On board to produce for Atlas Entertainment is Charles Roven ( Batman Begins , The Dark Knight ) and Richard Suckle; Sherwood Schwartz, the show’s original producer and composer of the main title theme, will serve as Executive Producer with his son Lloyd Schwartz. Jon Berg will watch over the project for Warner Bros. Roven said that he wants to put a contemporary twist on the well-known story and characters and will not look for a director until after the script is finished. He also wants to start production in 2011. Roven had this to say about a Gilligan’s Island movie:

"The characters are so good. We think it's going to be a great story to transport these cultural icons to the modern day."

Gilligan’s Island , for our younger readers, was the last generation’s Lost , just without so many characters. Still, the basics of the story are the same – people stranded on a deserted island with no way to get home. In this case, 7 people who set out on a 3-hour sightseeing cruise get caught up in a storm and wrecked their boat. For the next 3 years and 98 episodes, the crew and sightseers embark upon a journey fraught with humor, guest stars, cannibals and almost-rescues.

On the island were Gilligan (Bob Denver), The Skipper (Alan Hale Jr), The Professor (Russell Johnson), Mary Ann (Dawn Wells), Ginger (Tina Louise), Thurston Howell III (Jim Backus) and his wife, Lovey Howell (Natalie Schafer).  There have been no casting announcements yet, but Schwartz let it be known that he would be interested in seeing Michael Cera as the sweet, bell-bottom-wearing klutz, Gilligan. I can’t help but wonder if Roven has, himself, been stranded on a remote island in the Pacific for the past fifteen years. Has he not witnessed what happens when studios try to “transport these cultural icons to the modern day ?" Ladies and gentleman of the court, I will now present you with evidence that Charles Roven and Hollywood are happy to teach us our mistakes but never learn from their own. Exhibit A: Land of the Lost

Exhibit B: McHale’s Navy

Exhibit C: Fat Albert

Exhibit D: The Flintstones

Exhibit E: The Beverly Hillbillies

And those are just the TV shows-turned-feature-films that I think were the worst offenders of the bunch. I didn’t even bring up such “classics” as: Mr. Bean , Get Smart , Dragnet , Dudley Do-Right , George of the Jungle , Mr. Magoo , The Brady Bunch , Lost in Space , Wild Wild West , The Saint and Miami Vice ! In fact, I count forty-nine TV shows that have been turned into 'modern' films with at least ten more slated for future release in the next couple of years. Each attempt at "updating" these properties seems to be worse than the last and yet Hollywood is wetting their pants to bring us another serving of mediocre pudding. What are your thoughts on a modern setting for the 7 stranded castaways on Gilligan’s Island ? Oh! I forgot to mention Rocky & Bullwinkle , My Favorite Martian and The Honeymooners . I dare you to get THAT taste out of your mouth! Follow me on Twitter @Walwus Source: Variety

How pop culture influences us, how much luggage do you need for a three-hour trip the story of gilligan’s island.

Today we begin a month-long look at Gilligan’s Island .  I admit I was never a big Gilligan fan, but there are so many dedicated viewers that I decided it was time to take a closer look.  Today we look at the series, and in the following weeks, we’ll look at the actors who appeared in the cast.

Gilligan's Island (US TV Series)

Gilligan’s Island was created by one of my favorite producers, Sherwood Schwartz. It aired from September 1964 till April of 1967, producing 98 episodes and a ton of other versions of the show which aired as new series or television movies, including the hard-to-believe Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan’s Island .

THE HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS ON GILLIGAN'S ISLAND, Alan Hale, Jr., Bob Denver, Curly Neal, 1981. (c) Uni

The premise of the show was that on a three-hour tour, the SS Minnow became shipwrecked on a deserted island after a typhoon. Seven castaways now must make the island their home as they wait to be rescued. We have the captain of the ship, the Skipper (Alan Hale), his first-mate Gilligan (Bob Denver), millionaire Thurston Howell III (Jim Backus) and his wife Lovie (Natalie Schafer), movie star Ginger Grant (Tina Louise), the girl next door Mary Ann (Dawn Wells), and the Professor (Russell Johnson). All they have is a transistor radio and whatever they had on the ship.

gilligan8

CBS gave the okay for Schwarz to film the pilot. Schwartz wanted Jerry Van Dyke for Gilligan, but Van Dyke said it was “the worst thing” he ever read. He turned down the script and accepted the role of Dave Crabtree on My Mother the Car .

gilligan1

The pilot was titled “Marooned.” Seven characters were in the pilot, but only the Skipper, Gilligan and the Howells were going to be in the ongoing series. These were the only castaways mentioned in the pilot theme song. The final day of filming for the pilot was November 22, 1963, the day of Kennedy’s assassination. The staff was crowded around a radio between scenes trying to get the updated news. In the opening of the episodes in the first season, as the Minnow leaves the harbor, you can see an American flag flying at half staff as a tribute to Kennedy.

After seeing the pilot, several changes were requested. The first change was to the theme song. Originally it was written by the talented John Williams and sung by Schwartz and was a Calypso-sounding song. The lyrics were quite different from the song we recognize today. The background music and laugh track were the same for both the pilot and the ensuing shows. The three characters who were not part of the series at first were the same characters that later appeared . . . sort of. The Professor was a high school teacher played by John Gabriel, Ginger was an actress but also a secretary played by Kit Smythe, and Mary Ann was Bunny, a dumb blonde stereotype played by Nancy McCarthy.

gilligan4

Because so many changes happened between the pilot and the first episode, the pilot was not aired until 1992 when it was broadcast on TBS.

The first season was filmed in black and white but later colorized for syndication The second and third seasons were filmed in color.

While the pilot had been filmed in Hawaii,  the show was taped at a lagoon built at the CBS Radford Studios in Studio City, Los Angeles. The film was supposed to be shot in Malibu, but it was too foggy. The Ventura Freeway was nearby and when traffic was too loud, production had to halt. The lagoon would become a parking lot in 1995.

There were four boats that “played” the part of the SS Minnow. One was used in the opening credits which had been rented in Honolulu for the filming of the pilot. One was used in the opening credits for the final two years. One was shown in beach scenes and the fourth was built at the studio.

giligan5

The eventual theme song was called “The Ballad of Gilligan’s Isle,” and was written by Schwartz and George Wyle. There were two versions, one for the first season which referred to Mary Ann and the Professor as “the rest,” and another version for the last two seasons which specified “The Professor and Mary Ann.” Dawn Wells credits Bob Denver for going to bat for her and Johnson threatening to take his name out of the song if they were not added.

For the opening credits, the song was:

Just sit right back

And you’ll hear a tale

A tale of a fateful trip

That started from this tropic port

Aboard this tiny ship

The mate was a mighty sailing man

The skipper brave and sure

Five passengers set sail that day

For a 3-hour tour, a 3-hour tour

The weather started getting rough

The tiny ship was tossed

If not for the courage of the fearless crew

The Minnow would be lost, the Minnow would be lost

The ship set ground on the shore of this

Uncharted desert isle

With Gilligaaan

The Skipper too

A millionaire, and his wife

A movie star

The Proffessor and Mary Ann

Here on Gilligan’s Isle

For closing credits, the lyrics were:

So, this is the tale of our castaways

They’re here for a long long time

They’ll have to make the best of things

It’s an uphill climb

The first mate and his skipper too

Will do their very best

To make the others comfortable

In the tropic island nest

No phone, no lights, no motor cars

Not a single luxury

Like Robinson Crusoe

It’s primitive as can be

So, join us here each week my friends

You’ll sure to get a smile

From 7 stranded castaways

Here on Gilligan’s Isle!

gilligan9

Most of the episodes can be categorized into five themes. (1) One of the castaways make some useful object from local material. These could be anything from their bamboo huts to hot water pipes to a stethoscope to a pedal-powered car. They just could not produce anything that could get them off the island! (2) Visitors would often appear on the island. We’ll learn about some of the guest stars on the show in our last monthly blog. None of these visitors ever help the characters get rescued. Unbelievably, Ginger, Gilligan, and Mr. Howell all had look-alikes end up on the island, causing trouble for them. (3) Dreams occur a lot. When we see them, all the characters are part of the dream.  Apparently, the hot weather made them sleepy. (4) News from the outside world, usually heard on the radio, caused trouble on the island. (5) Strange objects showed up on the island from time to time like a WWII mine or radioactive vegetable seeds.

gilligan11

Despite many corny scripts and imagination-stretching storylines, the show received solid ratings all three years. When it went into syndication, it grew in popularity. Many of the stars from Gilligan play their characters from the show in other series’ television episodes in the 1970s and 1980s.

gilligan6

The last episode was called “Gilligan the Goddess.” Unfortunately, the castaways were not rescued. A fourth season was expected or perhaps Schwartz would have saved them. In season three, the show was on Monday nights competing with The Monkees .  Schwartz was assured it would be back because it had higher ratings than The Monkees . Gunsmoke , which aired Saturday nights, was given the potential ax. However, CBS president William Paley pressured the executives who then moved Gunsmoke to Monday night and cancelled Gilligan’s Island .

One funny fact I read about was how often the US Coast Guard received telegrams from citizens who were pleading for them to make an effort to rescue the cast from Gilligan’s Island. The Coast Guard sent these telegrams to Schwartz.

gilligan13

I can’t say that after learning more about the show, it made my favorites list, but there are definitely worse shows on television than Gilligan’s Island . If it was one of your favorites, you’ll enjoy hearing about the stars who played the castaways. I certainly learned they were just as interesting a group of people in real life as they were on the isle they called home for three years.

I didn’t see Gilligan’s Island when it originally aired. I was probably in bed. I watched the reruns after school in the 70s. I don’t recall ever hearing the closing song but I can easily sing the opening song. Ha. I like the Coast Guard story… people are crazy.

Gilligan’s Island: Part 1, The Longest Three Hour Tour Begins

Published: February 4, 2006

Setting Sail On September 26th 1964, Gilligan’s Island debuted on CBS, to almost universal disdain from the critics. The theme song told the story of the SS Minnow’s Skipper Jonas Grumby (Alan Hale Jr.), his dim-witted first mate Gilligan and their five passengers on an ill-fated three-hour tour off the coast of Hawaii. The passengers included: multi-millionaire Thurston Howell III (Jim Backus) and his wife who was nicknamed “Lovey” (Natalie Schaeffer), movie star Ginger Grant (Tina Louise), high-school Professor Roy Hinkley (Russell Johnson), and Kansas-born Mary Ann Summers (Dawn Wells). The show was envisioned by series creator Sherwood Schwartz as a microcosm of our society with all areas represented within the seven stranded castaways, forced to work together on a deserted isle.

The Journey Begins The series started with an episode entitled “Two on a Raft” which picked up where the theme song premise left off. After making their passengers as comfortable as possible, the Skipper and Gilligan set sail on a homemade raft in an attempt to find help. They sail for days and endure shark attacks and other mishaps along the way. They finally land on an island and find signs of life and become convinced that there are unfriendly natives nearby. Unknown to them, they have landed back on the same island where they started. The other castaways soon realize there are visitors on the island and believe them to be unfriendly natives as well. Both groups set up traps in a nearby cave and end up trapping each other by the time they realize what has happened. A typical set of circumstances for the castaways and just a taste of the silliness yet to come.

The island in the opening shot is Palmyra Atoll, approx. 1,000 south of Hawaii. You can find it on GoogleEarth.

WHICH ISLAND WAS USED FOR THE OPENING SHOT FROM ABOVE

In the past, screw-driven “Steam Ships” carried the prefix “SS”. That type of ship is no longer built, but the prefix is still used by “Sailing Ships”.

here is the big question ” what does the S.S. stand for” thanks everyone

Was That ‘Gilligan’s Island’ Reference Actually A Clue To The Future Of ‘Star Trek: Discovery’?

Last week’s episode of  Star Trek: Discovery (“The Galactic Barrier”) had an oblique reference to the classic sitcom Gilligan’s Island . This may have just been a bit of fun, but other clues in the episode point to how this could have been a clue about where the show is headed.

“A three hour tour”

“The Galactic Barrier” started with a meeting of the First Contact Committee, headed by Dr. Kovich (David Cronenberg). A mission to try to make contact with unknown Species 10-C, who reside outside the Milky Way, was being prepped and Kovich was being pressed for answers for planetary delegates going on the mission. Kovich dryly commented:

Kovich: It’s nice that they’re all so eager for a three-hour tour outside the galaxy.

And just in case you didn’t catch it, Saru noted, “It will take longer than three hours,” to which Kovich replied simply, “Figure of speech.”

Dr Kovich warns the committee about their mission

Indeed, a “three hour tour” is a figure of speech, one familiar to any fan of old sitcoms as it comes from the theme song of the classic 1960s sitcom Gilligan’s Island , which describes the premise of the show. The “fateful trip” for the SS Minnow started with a three-hour tour, but they were caught in a storm and almost lost, where the seemingly permanently damaged ship “set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle.”

For three seasons between 1963 and 1967 (going from black and white to color), the crew and passengers of the SS Minnow were stranded on that uncharted desert isle, where they got up to all sorts of shenanigans while awaiting rescue.

“Discovery might not be coming back”

The “three hour tour” reference could simply be a fun gag, but the Discovery writing team isn’t known for that kind of thing. Plus the rest of “The Galactic Barrier” set up the premise that the mission the Discovery was setting out on was perilous.

The possibility of it being a one-way trip clearly weighed on Saru. For the past two seasons, he has been growing closer to Ni’Var President T’Rina, who was also present at Starfleet HQ. He sought her out to say what he thought might be a final goodbye, getting the courage to finally tell her how he felt.

Saru: When last we spoke, you suggested we might share a meal. I would very much like to take you up on that offer. But Discovery is leaving very shortly and… as you know, we may not… So, I thought I should… um, tell you, while I’m able, how much our new friendship has meant to me.

And when President Rillak told Admiral Vance she’d decided to join the mission, he was blunt in his assessment:

Vance: They’re leaving the galaxy. We’ve never done that. You know as well as I do, Discovery might not be coming back from this.

This led to a dramatic goodbye scene between the two characters who have exemplified leadership of the Federation and Starfleet in the 32nd century. For the first time, Vance addressed the President by her first name as he realized, “I can’t talk you out of this, can I?” And season four had previously seen other big goodbyes, most notably with Tilly leaving the ship to teach at Starfleet Academy , possibly setting Mary Wiseman up to appear in a potential Academy series , along with and others who stayed behind, including Cronenberg’s Kovich (who sent Dr. Hirai in his stead).

These and other scenes before the ship departed all carried the weight of the stakes of their mission, but they could also be telegraphing that–like that of the SS Minnow–this may be a fateful trip for the USS Discovery. And luckily for Saru, T’Rina ended up coming along—so like Mr. Howell and Lovey, they can continue their story.

“Everything that’s beyond our galaxy to explore”

It’s often commented that the Howells and other castaways from Gilligan’s Island were very prepared. They may have been planning on a three hour tour, but they were packed for much more, with plenty of outfits for their years on that island.

The USS Discovery is also planning ahead. After Kovich made his “tour” quip, Vance asked Burnham how soon she could be ready to depart. While again ominously noting how this could be goodbye, she also indicated they were planning ahead, telling Vance:

Burnham: Two hours to finish loading and to give my crew time to say their goodbyes.

Later, to emphasize this point, Saru told the captain, “All additional supplies are loaded and secured,” so the USS Discovery is ready for whatever their fate may be without needing to resupply.

Saru says goodbye to Bryce

There was also a dramatic goodbye scene between Mr. Saru and Bryce, who was staying behind at Starfleet HQ. However, this one also had an element of hopeful optimism about the future. Bryce has been working with Kovich on extra-galactic communication and he told Saru:

Bryce: Not sure we’ll figure out galactic barrier communication soon enough to help with first contact, but a breakthrough anytime would be huge. I mean, the possibilities it would open up, everything that’s beyond our galaxy to explore, I’m pretty excited, obviously.

This issue of communication could be important. As of the end of the episode, the USS Discovery still could not make contact after leaving the galaxy. The crew of the SS Minnow also struggled with this; the Professor even attempted to build a telegraph, powered by the crew.

The Professor’s telegraph

“Not many people have gotten to see this”

Getting through the Galactic Barrier was harrowing for the crew of the USS Discovery, requiring the ingenuity and skill of the crew, and they still only barely made it with seconds to spare. The crew remarked on finding themselves outside the galaxy with this exchange:

Rhys:  It’s weird to see so few stars. Space has never felt this… empty. Nilsson:  Not many people have gotten to see this.

They underestimated the negative energy from the barrier and were only able to get through it by hitching a ride inside of a vacuum bubble that was naturally flowing through. There was no indication that the same could be done the other way around.

The Discovery exits the barrier

Their main concern is to complete their first contact mission and get Species 10-C to shut down the DMA, but with three episodes left in season four, there is plenty of time to worry about the rest later. And just like with Gilligan, the skipper, the millionaire and his wife, the movie star, the Professor, and Mary Ann, what matters most is the crew of the USS Discovery will have each other, and they have shown that together, they can do just about anything.

3 hour tour gilligan

The Gilligan’s Island castaways

Another fateful trip?

But what’s next for Captain Burnham and the crew of the USS Discovery? As noted, the episode “The Galactic Barrier” set up some pretty high stakes for the crew, telegraphing that this mission may be a one-way trip. Of course, that is nothing new for this group, who jumped through a wormhole at the end of season two to head into the far future and escape the evil AI named “Control.”

3 hour tour gilligan

The USS Discovery jumps to the 32nd century

Could season four be heading towards a similar setup?  After two seasons in the 32nd century, the crew of the USS Discovery succeeded in their mission to protect the galaxy from Control, helped restart the United Federation of Planets after the devastation of The Burn, and (presumably) will save the galaxy again from Species 10-C. So perhaps for the crew of the USS Discovery, the Milky Way has become a bit of “been there, done that.” Could all the foreshadowing, the big goodbyes, loading the ship up with supplies, and yes, making a joke about Gilligan’s Island , all be leading up to the crew of the USS Discovery finding themselves as castaways?

It seems possible that season four could end on yet another cliffhanger, leaving the fate of the Discovery’s ability to return home in question. Skipper Burnham and her little buddies could find themselves stranded in the deserted island that is the great gulf between galaxies. Unlike Star Trek: Voyager’s mission to return home, what if the Disco crew chose to explore another galaxy, keeping in touch with Starfleet all the way (thanks to that extragalactic comms Bryce and Kovich keep talking about)? Last year, Alex Kurtzman talked about a desire to explore “different areas of the universe that haven’t been explored before” for potential future shows, but it certainly seems like it could also be done with Discovery.  Perhaps the next final frontier could be an entirely new galaxy.

Season five has been ordered and work is already underway, so just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale… but you will have to wait until next year.

3 hour tour gilligan

To Gilligan, home is where the crew is

There are always possibilities

So, how serious are we about this? Well, a little bit—and of course, that Gilligan reference may just be a gag. But we do feel that season four has been set up to end in some kind of cliffhanger, and even with the “fresh snow” of the new setting of the 32nd century, the writers could be longing for an entirely blank slate, especially with so many other Star Trek shows running, each making their own Milky Way canon.

Watch: Things Get “Odd” In ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Trailer And Clip From “Face The Strange”

It feels an awful lot like the premise of Voyager if so.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4h7DcNpWYvY

They did do it first!

If the 10-C can create and direct a stable wormhole from their galaxy to ours for mining, I’d be surprised if they couldn’t do the same to get Discovery home.

Woo! Called it!

I’m still trying to understand why they had the classic tech at the table too…. Feels like a lot of foreshadowing

Did Starfleet ever ask the Kelvans how they got through the Galactic Barrier? Those guys modified the Enterprise to do that trick, but 900 years later, they’re stumped?

TOS never happed.

It has been years since I last saw that ep, but isn’t the story that the Kelvan vessel broke up when entering our galaxy through the barrier? I am certain the Blish novelization included a reference to that, even with a footnote about WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE. So the real question is how they modified Kirk’s ship’s engines to get to Andromeda in 300 years, and how come the Federation didn’t keep that improvement and install it on everything.

Nothing new to Trek. We often get technology introduced that is used exactly once and never again. For example, why can’t we just inject ourselves with an elixir to give ourselves psionic powers whenever we want, like McCoy did for Kirk and Spock in Plato’s Stepchildren?

Not to mention Transphasic torpedoes and deployable armor tech – the battle in NEMESIS would have been over fairly quickly if the writers had remembered that.

Well, it only works on that one planet, just like INS with the non-aging.

The warranty expired after one use. Common problem with 23rd century tech.

So the rumors of them using a deepfake Jim Backus this season are true!

Oh, Lovie….

Great theory,

I too was wondering why Kovich made the Gilligan’s Island reference. It was like he knows they won’t be returning anytime soon. After embarrassing themselves with “the burn” non-sense, it was clear going to the future was still not far enough from Star Trek canon for the writers of the show.

Star Trek: ‘Whispers and Feelings’, formerly known as Discovery, should probably shed what little is left of Star Trek and go missing outside the galaxy for the remainder of the series. It might become a decent non-trek sci-fi show.

Why do you choose to watch a show that you dislike so much?

Everyone keeps forgetting that tune, music from last season. That was odd and still has next been explained. And what is Dr Kovich up to? Why was so important that he could not join Discovery?

The tune was explained. It was a modulation of the Kelpien distress signal through the storm that surrounded it.

The telegraphing via the line “3 hour tour” is a little meta for Trek, but not exactly a surprise. Venturing outside the galaxy is a neat idea, but I fail to understand how any galactic barrier is so restrictive that it prohibits the spore drive from getting through it, when said drive could hop universes. The inconsistency of how technology works in Kurtzman – Trek is astonishing.

The mycelial network only extends inside our galaxy; outside the galaxy it’s useless. And hopping between universes is more of a euphemism; the “Mirror Universe” is still inside the bounds of our galaxy. The “mirror mycelial network” likely has the same limits. Within those definitions, it’s consistent.

wel, the spore drive as a conceit on the show is a bit too ridiculous of an extrapolation of scientific theory, so that explanation should work for me, but it doesn’t. the notion that our galaxy exists in multiple universes and this network works in that fashion doesn’t make sense… as is the notion that a galactic barrier exists.. with all they’ve set aside on this version of Trek to suit their own desires, it’s really odd that they would choose to keep that.. but.. of course they needed to have a plot device, and not surprising that’s the best this bunch could come up with.

Is that true or assumed? Does it just exist in the Milky Way, or does it exist in the entire universe but is absent near various phenomena such as the galactic barrier? Or is it present only within structures such as galaxies? Not sure this has been made fully clear from what we’ve seen.

Depends on which season of ST:DIS we’re talking about.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrqFlXe4Awc

Season One it was everywhere. Season Four, it’s only in our galaxy? (Or is it that the Galactic Barrier creates a discontinuity with the mycelial network and thus it does exist outside of the Milky Way Galaxy?)

Side note: I do like Discovery, so please don’t take what I’m saying as if I’m a hater.

The mirror universe absolutely does not exist within our Galaxy. You could fly all throughout the Delta, Gamma, Beta, and Alpha and never find a mirror crew. They are in another universe altogether. I have no idea where you got this idea.

If we want to pretend its reasonable that the mycelial network only exists within the Milky Way, but can extend through the universes that also have alternate Milky Ways fine (I don’t understand the rationale since the way the mycelial network has been described it seemingly permeates the everything, but I’ve let Trek take liberties with their tech since the days of TOS).

I’m not surprised Gilligan’s Island survived to the 32nd century. It’s a classic!

Love that photo with SMG in the middle of the helm. I definitely would love to have it as a poster.

The V’draysh loves Betty Boop.

Well, I’ve never seen it. But I’ve sort of “seen” it in an episode of ALF…

Those poor people…

By Grabthor’s Hammer…

The Vorta do enjoy Jerry Lewis, for some reason.

The Galactic Barrier is too obviously a convenient plot device. If it’s there at the rim of Milky Way, why not move above or below galactic plane to bypass it? Unless… It’s there as an artificial construct of Species 10-C. It appears only when (and where) a star ship tries to leave (or enter) our galaxy, to block its path. I think that’s where this is heading. After Discovery succeeds in “negotiations” with 10-C, the Galactic Barrier will have a temporary “hole” and they can go home. Why go to another galaxy? How do they get there, with spore drive not working in intergalactic space? The spore drive is an integral part of this show, to quickly get from place to place.

I was under the impression that the mycelial network breaks up is is interfered with at the galactic barrier but then reappears on the other side. Am I wrong about that?

Yeah, I’ve wondered about that…. Captain, the probe is blocking our path!! Sulu, we’re in space, with warp drive. Go around it…..

I do love this theory and been saying for a long long time now I would love to see Star Trek eventually expand to other galaxies. It’s a little surprising by the 32nd century no one has done that yet (or at least no one from other galaxies has made their way here) but not a big deal.

However if they are leaving the galaxy I don’t think it’s going to be a permanent thing either. I just can’t fathom why they would do that and have both the Vulcan and Federation Presidents on the same ship as well? That would be a huge loss to the Federation, especially in the state it’s in right now and why it would seem odd to me. So I don’t see this as another Voyager situation and they probably will find a way back sooner. But sure I can see them being in another galaxy for a little while, even all next season since it’s serialized and time can move much slower in that format. Discovery may only be gone a month in term of season five’s duration. But yeah I hope this theory proves true and they are going to face a new frontier, even if only temporary.

And this just came to me, but didn’t we see Tilly showing up again in the trailer for the later season? I’m sure she is suppose to show up again but I can’t remember if we saw her on the ship or not. But if she’s seen on the ship, then chances are the ship makes it back to the Alpha Quadrant by the finale.

Tilly was seen at Starfleet HQ with Vance, we considered that but it is still consistent with the theory

OK, gotcha! I honestly couldn’t remember.

My guess is that they will succeed in asking 10-C to stop mining, but 10-C will misinterpret it as leaving the galaxy altogether when they realize there is sentient life inside. So they will be stranded inside the hyperfield, which is filled with wormholes to many different galaxies that the 10-C is mining. They don’t know which one leads to Milky Way, so they will need to try all 1300 of them one by one…

Ooh sounds like it could make for a pseudo Sliders mashup!

What about the Gary Mitchel story after crossing the galactic barrier and obtaining “godlike powers”. Is this no longer an effect from the barrier and are there no records of this incident in future?

I think they covered that by mentioning whatever was protecting the shields was also protecting their biological systems as well. I can’t remember the exact line though.

And it’s been 900 years since what happened to Mitchel. You would think by now they have studied the effects enough and found ways to counteract them.

How did the TOS Enterprise ever reach the barrier in the first place? Sometimes you just have to ignore TOS when it makes no sense.

Delta Vega and the ESPer incident happened in mid-disk, at the “top” of the dish— just “up” from central UFP space. In the thin profile of the galaxy —not way out at the edge of the disk. (That’s been our retcon the last 20 years in the licensed and now screen-seen Trek star charts/ Stellar Cartography).

Really? Ok, that’s cool if that is the case!

Ohhhh… Sit right back abd you’ll hear a take, a tale of a fateful trip.,..

I said the same thing on another chat board. The three hour tour and the Bryce conversation was a dead giveaway

But they never got to say goodbye to Tilly. Wonder why.

There’s really no point in exploring an entire other galaxy. The galaxy of the 32nd century is changed enough and is *still* big enough that they don’t have to to some marketing buzz-hype “look a new galaxy!!” nonsense.

What are they going to find in the new galaxy? More bipedal humanoids and latex prosthetics…oooo…ahhh…..so different…wow…

But if they do get stuck – it’s another classic season long epic dilema for the unluckiest ship in Trekverse

Agreed. The 32nd century was just starting to feel truly large and expansive (which IMO, DISCO has struggled with), so there’s no need to wipe the slate clean again and throw them into another setting, which is going to feel a hell of a lot like the current setting in terms of aliens and plot devices. My personal hope is that the 10-C reject all attempts at diplomacy and start a massive war, across multiple galaxies.

“Star Trek.” “Star Trek: The Animated Series.” “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.” “Star Trek: Voyager.” “Star Trek: Enterprise.”

And the rest.

I sense you’re trying to send a message there…

That’s like a 1000+ hour tour.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. If anything it tells us that Kovich is a history buff.

Not crazy about them introducing Gilligan’s Island references. That kind of reference should be reserved for one of the juvenile-targeted cartoon Trek series.

Why, Star Trek has often referenced the 20th century. The characters always seem to love the sports, music, cars, etc. Why is a specific goofy TV show your line in the sand?

Well for one, these references accelerate “the dating” of these shows over time. For instance, the “only Nixon could go to China” line from Spock in STVI doesn’t hold up well today for viewers under 40 who are not history majors. But that at least was a historical event one might argue could be brought up in conversation a coupe hundred years from now. By contrast, Gilligan’s Island is a 50+ old sitcom, for crying out loud…lol. It’s hard to believe that would come up in conversation 200 years from now.

Secondly, I personally don’t like it because it takes me out of the moment in the ep. I want future drama and conversation not cute references to old tv shows. My preference and opinion!

I Just hope if Discovery strands on a planet outside the galaxy, it won’t be a season set in the Query they use for every alien planet ;). No, I’m just making fun, but it looks like they are heavily hinting that Discovery will be “lost” and will have trouble getting back. Maybe that’s why the Ni’Var prime minister is on board, to give Saru a story arc in season 5.

Disco end of the season and the start of season 5 theory: Species 10-C will be nonexistent, may be extinct in the finale, the mining is automatic, and the climax will be that the Disco crew has to stop the automatic mining procedure. In solving the problem something similar like in season 3 will happen, somehow to stop the thing they will need to enter the wormhole and will be thrown into another galaxy. Because the spore drive doesn’t work in the intergalactic space, the purpose of season 5 will be to find a way home like Voyager. Maybe they will even extend the Voyage Home ;) to season 7 if it comes to that. This way the writers could really tell new stories, invent new species,… What do you think?

P.S.: Now I’ll actually go and read the article, It looks like a lot of what I wrote is already a working theory :)

Perhaps more important, what was it that took Kovich away that is even more pressing?

They could be doing a different setting every 2 seasons.

1,2 – Prime Alpha Quadrant 3,4 – 32 century Alpha Quad 5,6 – ?? 7 – Back to 23rd Century Alpha Quad for finale ?!

I buy the premise but what about Tilly and Gray?

There is some speculation that Tilly will be the lead for the Starfleet Academy show that is in development.

now I can’t see Saru without him wearing that hat.

Discovery is a show that doesn’t know what it is. It is a prequel! Uh, no, scratch that idea. It is in the far future! Yeah, but that doesn’t seem to be working. Let’s try Gilligan’s Island…? When the creatives signal they don’t have enough confidence in the premise of the show, why should I?

Do you know how tired that sounds? You’ve also just described the story development for virtually every single Trek movie, yet they keep making them. And we go stomping off the theaters to watch.

Okay. Peace.

I think they shouldn’t do that. We need to see more of the 32nd century first. Going to other galaxies is the stuff for another spin-off… Voyager-J comes to mind…

However, haven’t the producers said they are still working on getting to the situation we saw in the Short Treks Calypso? Tying this theory to that story could be hard to do.

When you look at some of the Discovery storylines, it makes Gilligan’s Island look like Hamlet.

Produced by Harold Hecuba.

Jimmy, and to think that particular episode was directed by Ida Lupino.

The Milky Way is a vast playing field, but sadly, the don’t know how to play it. Jumping to a different galaxy won’t improve the lack of worldbuilding of the show, which is still one of the weak links. I keep watching because it’s Star Trek and I hope something interesting will happen, but so far, the 10-C mystery is shaping up to become another red angel/burn. But I agree that the ship will probably not return to the Alpha Qudrant in the finale.

Prepare for the first starship repairs to be made using nothing but coconuts and bamboo.

It’s just probably a simple idiom that’s survived the centuries, like “spill the beans”, or “crossing the Rubicon” for example.

Has anyone noticed the last image on this page of Discovery at warp has the nacelles are not attached by the superconductors?

This is the third time that we took a trip out of the Bartlett location and all three times we were not disappointed. The staff makes sure that you will be warm throughout the tour before even leaving to go onto the tour. Beech was our tour guide and this was the second time we had him as a tour guide. He is one of the many great tour guides at Northers Extremes Snowmobiling. Haven’t driven a snowmobile before? No problem, Beech and the other tour guides will show you exactly how to use the snowmobile and they will never leave you behind. You’re encouraged to go only as fast as you are comfortable with multiple times throughout the tour. I would recommend Northern Extreme’s Snowmobiling to everyone.

Our second time snowmobiling, first time with a guide. Well worth it. Gorgeous views, plenty of photo ops, varied terrain and Guide Todd enabled us to be as careful or fast as desired. Hope to do again with Todd at Bretton Woods for closer views of the Presidential Range. I appreciate working with a company in which people are friendly - helps the whole experience.

Can't say enough about this place.... this was our 3rd time going from the Bartlett location. We had a gorgeous sunny day. Beech was our guide. Super fun guy! Very personable, knowledgeable and all around awesome!! We stopped at a few points to enjoy the view and take some pics. On one of our stops came up upon a pack of sled dogs and got to pet them and take pics. They were beautiful!! I'd highly recommend this as the best place in north conway for sure!!

We were 2 couples and we did the 3 hour tour. Dick was our guide and has an amazing personality. He was also very patient with others on the tour! The views were awesome, from the overlooks to the bridges and streams. If you have the chance to do take any of their tours, please do. You will not regret it.

Friendly staff, beautiful day, easy process, a lot of fun. Just wish trails were more and you didn't go in so many circles.
